The newly elected MP for Ajax- Pickering and former Pickering regional councillor was on the council agenda to discuss federal/ municipal relations and didn’t disappoint: issues such as a new deal for cities, the federal gas tax and opening the U.S. border to Canadian beef were brought up. Mr. Holland said Prime Minister Paul Martin is “very behind” mu- nicipalities, and hopes to open the lines of communication more. “It’s very important a new deal cannot be authored in Ottawa, but with consultation,” he said. He suggested meeting regularly with municipalities and including them in budget talks. He said the 5 cents - or $2 billion - in gas tax money is a strong com- mitment from Ottawa that will be followed through. Regional Chairman Roger An- derson, also the president of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO), said he appreci- ated the commitment, “but we’d appreciate it a lot sooner. www.blaisdale.com 12 mths - grade 8 5 Campuses in Durham Call Head Office 905-509-5005 Blaisdale MONTESSORI School Best Private School As voted by Ajax/Pickering Readers’ Choice Awards Limited spaces available Glenn Healy Customer Appreciation Day Win a $2,500 Vacation Voucher meet former Maple Leaf FREE BBQ • REFRESHMENTS • FACE PAINTING * Some conditions apply. What awaits the candidate who wins the Ward 2 seat? For mer Ward 2 City Councillor Bill McLean, who was appointed to the regional seat left vacant by MP Mark Holland, said he spent a minimum of 40 hours a week doing the job: two hours a day respond- ing to e-mails plus time attending meetings and events. “Then you have you’re reading material and sometimes it’s dry and you have to read it two or three times,” he said. Spectators in the Whitby courtroom sat in rapt silence as Cosmo Jacobson detailed the events leading up to his fateful meeting in June of 2000 with Roy Jones, a former high school colleague who would eventually be shot to death on an Ajax street several months later. Mr. Jacobson, who is on trial for first-de- gree murder, along with his long-time friend Sean Hall, said the robbery of a local drug dealer in June of 2000 was planned to be a low-risk job that would net him, Mr. Hall, and a third man, a tidy haul of dope and cash. “We just wanted to make some easy money with the lowest amount of risk of being caught,” Mr. Jacobson said under question- ing by Jason Dos Santos, one of the lawyers who’s representing him. “What’s he going to do, call the police and say, ‘Hey, my drugs were stolen?’” The trio planned to invade the home on a Friday morning, when, they speculated, their target would have cash handy as he prepared to pick up drugs that night. They armed themselves with several sets of handcuffs and a stolen Colt .45 handgun, Mr. Jacobson said. As they prepared to raid the Major Oaks Drive home, Mr. Jacobson gave Mr. Hall his cellphone so he could call the house and make sure someone was home - a mistake that would later give police evidence in their case against Mr. Jacob- son. When they arrived at the home, Mr. Ja- cobson rang the bell while his accomplices waited nearby. He was surprised when a woman answered the door instead of the drug dealer. “I rang the bell and his mother answered,” Mr. Jacobson testified. “I was like, we didn’t expect this.” Mr. Jacobson asked for the woman’s son and she invited them in to wait for the young man, Mr. Jacobson said. Once inside, they concealed their faces and prepared to pounce. The third man, identified as Everett Grant, pulled out the handgun and ordered the woman to lie down on the floor, Mr. Jacob- son said. “Everett held the gun to her head. I put the handcuffs on her,” Mr. Jacobson said. When the drug dealer came into the room, he and Mr. Hall manhandled him, demand- ing he hand over his stash of dope, he testi- fied. The dealer denied having any drugs, but when Mr. Hall ransacked his bedroom he found scales used for weighing marijuana, Mr. Jacobson said. “Then we started giving him shots (saying) ‘You lying bastard,’” Mr. Jacobson testified. Mr. Hall discovered bags of marijuana and hashish. The terrified woman gave Mr. Jacobson two credit cards and a bank card, along with their access numbers for use in an ATM. The three left the house and went to the Metro East Trade Centre, where Mr. Jacob- son used the cards to withdraw $800. While there, he came face-to-face with Mr. Jones, who worked as a security guard at the flea market. The two men knew each other from their high school days in Pickering. “I’m kind of like, ‘I know you,’” Mr. Jacob- son said. “I said something like, ‘Listen, if anybody asks, I wasn’t here, OK?’ “He was like, ‘I don’t want to know any- thing.’” But when Durham Regional Police investi- gators later traced the credit cards to the ATM Mr. Jacobson had used, they interviewed Mr. Jones, who identified the man he’d known years earlier. He picked Mr. Jacobson out of a photo line-up investigators showed him, court heard earlier. In doing so, Mr. Jones became a key Crown witness in the case against Mr. Jacobson, who was arrested for the robbery a few days later. Mr. Jacobson has testified that he and Mr. Hall hatched a plan to intimidate Mr. Jones into refusing to testify when the case came to court in February of 2001. But that plan went badly awry on the night of Feb. 4, when Mr. Jones was shot sev- eral times and left to die on Pickering Beach Road while Mr. Jacobson and Mr. Hall drove away. “We were planning to do this to scare Roy,” Mr. Jacobson said. “We had a plan. durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, SEPTEMBER 12, 2004 PAGE 3 A/P As Lynde Creek Village has grown we have become a vibrant community of fun-loving and active seniors whose primary focus is to enjoy life! He tried to reply to con- stituents during the day so his nights would be free for meetings. And don’t forget councillors have to work weekends. “You probably put a lot more time in on the week- ends than you do Monday to Friday,” he said, adding the weekends are when council members partici- pate in community events, and fundraisers. Sylvain Trepanier, presi- dent of the Pickering East Shore Community Associa- tion, is one of the Ward 2 residents the new council- lor is going to represent. He has an idea of what the association and residents in the ward want to see in their new councillor. “Somebody who will work for the community and work with the community,” he said. “They have to be an ex- tremely good lis- tener.” Mr. Trepanier said the suc- cessful candi- date is going to have to look at the big picture and focus on is- sues of concern to the ward. “They can’t lose the whole picture of what the city is doing and they can’t lose (sight of the) interests of the people who elected them,” he said. “In Ward 2 there is still things to be done. The waterfront is nice but it needs work to remain.” Another impor- tant characteristic is the ability to keep constitu- ents informed, he said, whether it be through a newsletter, town hall meetings or a website. They have to be cre- ative to find what catches the interest of the different residents,” he said. Coun. McLean also has some advice for anyone thinking of running. “It’s important that who- ever runs is involved in the community and has helped out... Once you’ve volun- teered and done all that you can, move on to decision making,” he said. Councillors affect lives with their decisions, he added. “It’s not all fun and games, there is a lot of responsibil- ity,” he said. “If you’re thinking about it, if you want to help out and you want to do some good. If you don’t mind people calling you at all hours of the day, go for it,” he said. “Get out knocking on those doors, that’s prob- ably the most important and best part of the campaign.” Coun. McLean, who was first elected in 2000, has one last piece of advice. “G od gave us two ears and one mouth so do twice as much listening as you do talking,” he said. “People want to be heard.” Important dates: • Close of nominations: Sept. 24 • Advance voting - 1st date: Oct. 30 • Advance voting - 2nd date: Nov. 3 • Election day: Monday, Nov. 8 • Term for new council- lor Nov. 15, 2004 - Nov. 30, 2006. Mr. Anderson pointed out a recently signed agreement between the Province and AMO said gas tax money would flow with no hold- back. “I want both of you to un- derstand there’s no debate,” he said. “And if they don’t (flow the money), we have a document that says they have to.” After Mr. Holland boasted about the $7 billion in reve- nue for cities by eliminating the GST on certain munici- pal expenditures, Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan said the tax was only being rebated. Right now municipali- ties have to pay GST then wait for it to be returned, and that wastes time and money, Mayor Ryan said. Brock Councillor Larry O’Connor called the federal government’s commitment to affordable housing “woe- fully inadequate.” There are 5,000 people in Dur- ham waiting for housing and 1,100 children waiting for subsidized day care, he said. MP told funds needed soon U.S. presidential candidate speaks out on garbage By Carly Foster Staff Writer DURHAM – U.S. presi- dential hopeful John Kerry didn’t scare Region officials this week when he said he’d close the border to Ontario trash. “I don’t have any con- cerns at the moment,” said Regional Chairman Roger Anderson after council We dnesday, adding that Durham trash would be taken care of. In a press release Tuesday, Mr. Kerry vowed to immedi- ately ban garbage flowing from Ontario to Michigan if he wins the Nov. 2 election. “It’s time to end trash dumping in Michigan,” the Democrat said. U.S. Presi- dent “George W. Bush has let Michigan become Cana- da’s landfill.” Durham has shipped more than 200,000 tonnes of garbage to Michigan since January 2003, when the Keele Valley landfill closed, said Mirka Janusz- kiewicz, the Region’s direc- tor of waste. Mr. Kerry said he would stop trash from Canada until the U.S. Environmen- tal Protection Agency (EPA) begins enforcing a treaty requiring Canada to notify the EPA of each shipment of waste entering America. The treaty allows the agency to reject garbage for health or environmental reasons. But an administrator for the EPA recently said the treaty only covers hazard- ous waste and would need to be expanded to cover other types. Durham’s contract with Miller Waste Systems says the company has to find an- other site for the Region’s garbage if the border clos- es, Ms. Januszkiewicz said. Other dump-site options specified in the contract include Ohio, Pennsylvania and Napanee, near Ottawa, she and works commission- er Cliff Curtis said. “I’m confident the Region of Durham is taken care of,” Mr. Anderson said, adding if anything surrounding the border did come up, the Ministry of the Environment would also be involved. Mr. Curtis agreed. “He (Mr. Kerry) is not supposed to be interfering with cross-border trade,” he said. Media outlets in the U.S. have speculated that Mr. Kerry made the com- ment to appease Michigan, considered an influential state that, among others, could swing the upcoming election. - with files from TorStar News Service DOLPHIN POOL & SPA Established 1970 SOFTUBS • HOT TUBS • INGROUND POOLS • ABOVEGROUND POOLS DURHAM CENTRE HWY #2 401HARWOODwww.dolphinpools.net 65 KINGSTON RD. Mr. Flaherty, the MPP for Whitby-Ajax Riding, will be front and centre as the Ontario Progressive Conservative party holds its leadership vote. For the second time, Mr. Fla- herty will be attempting to lead the Tories. In March 2002, he finished second to Ernie Eves, and now he hopes to replace the outgoing leader on Saturday, Sept. 18, when he’ll be up against John Tory and Frank Klees. Two years ago the Tories weren’t ready for the message being delivered by Mr. Flaherty - but that could all change next weekend. At that time, the Tories were scared off by his hard-line message, which some saw as too closely aligned to the Common Sense Revolution of Mike Harris. Well, Mr. Harris and company were able to govern for eight years, but under Mr. Eves, who took a more moderate tone, the Pro- gressive Conservatives were forced to the sidelines. It’s obvious that the voters of Ontario were enamoured with the values and message of Mr. Harris; they’ll find those same characteristics in Mr. Flaherty. Over his nine years at Queen’s Park Mr. Flaherty has held arguably two of the most important cabinet posts as Attorney General and Deputy Premier - it’s not a stretch to say he could easily handle being the leader of the Tories. He would cut taxes, reduce government size, permit parental choice in education and allow citizens to recall a politician. He would continue his support of post-secondary education, which resulted in Durham Region being awarded the first university in this province in the last two decades. Mr. Flaherty has “mainstream conservative values” and isn’t afraid of hard work and fiscal responsibility. Mr. Flaherty has not wavered from his “blue” roots, and that’s exactly what the Tory party needs right now if it wants to knock off the Liberals. Te a chers’ act wearing thin To the editor: Re: ‘Back to school and the picket line,’ Tony Doyle column, Aug. 29. Well, here we go again. Why is it that we have to keep going through this year after year? C’mon guys and girls, you knew about the job requirements when you first went to teachers college, and you accepted things as they were then... are things really that different now? No other profession in the world gives employees a Christ- mas break, March break, and more than two months off in the summer with a salary for some of more than $60,000 to boot. There is no shift work involved. No weekends, no night shift, and no evening shift. Compare this to other professions. Other professions have an employee’s performance evaluated at least once per year. Most, if not all, professions have had their employees’ workloads increased greatly in the last 10-plus years, with many receiving salary decreases or minimal raises. They require constant schooling and upgrading to keep up with change. Te achers’ actual in-class time amounts to less than 25 hours per week. I think there is room there to add prep time in afterwards. Teachers are constantly threatening strike or job action and are ultimately using our children as pawns. Believe it or not, they really have it a lot easier than the rest of us. If they are really that unhappy, perhaps they should consider a career change and let the new recently graduated teachers in. CANCER’S TOUGH, BUT WE CAN’T EVER GIVE UP THE FIGHT Depending on when you read this, my wife will have either finished the Weekend to End Breast Can- cer walk or is pretty close to the finish line. Danielle was asked to take part by my sister Tracy, who put together a team to walk in our mother Nellie’s memory. She died in 1999 not yet 50 years old, yes, of breast cancer. To gether, they’re walking 60 kilome- tres on a scenic route and overnight they’re sleeping on the ground in tents, all for a good cause. They weren’t alone. There were hundreds taking part and I know mom was walking right beside them. Whoever you are, reading this column right now, one thing is for certain: some- one close to you has been touched by cancer. Or, worse yet, you’ve lost some- one in your family or circle of friends, from cancer. The statistics prove it and studies show the rate of cancer is only going to rise in the years ahead. The question is, do we just accept this and cross our fingers that we beat the odds, or do we continue to pour money into research and hope against hope that scientists can solve this disease? After all, they may never be able to beat this damn disease. Well, you know the answer. We can never give up. My wife’s walk is over, so this is not a shameless plea for donations, but keep in mind that the Terry Fox Run is right around the corner. OK, maybe this is a shameless plea, call me if you want to make a donation. If you can’t reach me to make a pledge, find a friend who’s taking part. Or, better yet, start collect- ing pledges yourself and walk or run the event on Sept. 19. Pledge sheets are online at terryfox- run.ca and even if you hate asking peo- ple for money, wait until you see how easy it is to gather pledges for this cause. Everyone believes in it. The one thing that makes the Terry Fox Run a not-to-be missed event for me, is the incredible friendship every- one displays. If you haven’t experienced it, give it a try this year. Of course, if you aren’t into friendly conversation and a little exercise, not to mention raising money for a tremen- dously important cause, by all means, stay home on the couch. Who needs you, ya lazy unfriendly bum. OK, I’m sorry, you’re fine, as long as you make a pledge to a Terry Fox partici- pant before you crash out on the couch. The three were taking part in the 1960s and ’70s swim party last week at the Pickering Recreation Complex. Clubs range in ages and activities PICKERING – Now that students are back in class, the Pickering Public Library has several clubs to keep them busy after school. A book club runs every second Wednesday from Sept. 15 to Nov. 24 at the central branch from 4 to 5 p.m. Children aged eight to 11 can come and hear sto- ries, talk about their favou- rite books, movies or music, and make new friends. For something more hands-on there is the stuff to make club, at the central branch. Students aged six to nine can join staff for cre- ative fun with food (advise staff of any allergies). It is Saturday, Oct. 16 at 2 p.m. The wiseguys after school club helps eight- to 11-year- olds become know-it-alls. The club meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., Sept. 14 to Oct. 14 at the central branch. The club offers snacks, music, help with home- work, and all kinds of games and activities. Students also learn how to use the library and Internet to find infor- mation for school. For those looking for something to get them a lit- tle messy, there is the whiz science club. On Saturday, Sept. 18 and Nov. 13 at the central branch, students aged seven to 11 can ex- plore the world of weird, wacky and sticky science with the library’s group of mad scientists. In addition to all the clubs, there is also one camp being offered at the central branch. The library’s computer camp is back and is being offered after school and Saturdays. Participants can come for one session or the whole block of programs. Students aged eight to 11 learn tips for fast fingers and finding the best sites, get answers to questions about the Net; sign up for e-mail; and be- come masters at MS Word and MS PowerPoint. Space is limited to 10 students. Registration is required for all clubs. To register, call 905-831-6265 ext. 6226. Library offers after-school programs for Pickering students Permanent award to be established DURHAM - The Durham College Foundation Schol- arship and Bursary Fund has increased by $40,000, thanks to the Oshawa Dou- ble B Sports Club. For almost 12 years, the Oshawa Double B Sports Club held fundraising events to save for a club- house to be used by local fastball teams. However, a regulation later prevented the team from contributing to this project so the money was then donated to organi- zations within the commu- nity. The Durham College Foundation and Scholar- ship Fund will now be re- ceiving a $20,000 donation on behalf of the sports club, and due to one-to-one dol- lar matching from the Prov- ince’s Ontario Student Op- portunity Trust Fund, the donation will be increased by another $20,000. “Students will benefit from this award not only this year, but for many years to come,” Terry Slobodian, president of the Durham College Foundation said. The money will be used to create a needs-based per- manent award provided an- nually to a full-time student selected by the Scholarship and Awards Committee. durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, SEPTEMBER 12, 2004 PAGE 9 P CANADIAN TIRE PICKERING ONLY 1735 Pickering Parkway (at Brock Road), 905-686-2309 We Welcome All Major Fleet Cards NOW OPEN Thur & Fri til 8pm FALL MAINTENANCE CHECK • Rotate tires • Check coolant • Check exhaust system • Change oil (Castrol GTX) • Change oil filter • Lube chassis • Check brakes • Check & inflate tires • Check shocks & struts • Check belts & hoses • Top up fluids • Check lamps • Check wipers * $2.50 Enviro Charge Applies $2995* Reg. $34.95 Most cars CANNOT BE USED WITH ANY OTHER PROMOTIONWITH THIS COUPON ONLY $5 SAVE Want to know what’s happening in Pickering? As of Sept. 1, all children born on or after Sept. 1, 2003 will be eligi- ble to receive free chicken pox and meningitis vaccines from their family doc- tors. After Jan. 1, 2005, all children born after that day will have free access to all three vac- cines. That will mean a savings of more than $600 a child. “These diseases are prevent- able,” Dr. Reynolds said. “Chil- dren...don’t have to be ill. The op- portunity to get vaccines means parents will not have to pick be- tween children. “There are serious side effects... even death from all three illness- es.” Some of the vaccines will also be available for older children staring Jan. 1, 2005, Dr. Reynolds said. Kids 12 and older will be able to get a meningitis vaccination if they’ve never had one. Forms will go out in the fall for the shots to be given at the same time as hepatitis B through schools. And teens 15 to 19 who haven’t had the meningitis vaccine are also eligible, although it’s not yet known how it will be made avail- able to them. “Logistically, we’re working out with other health departments how to implement this program,” Dr. Reynolds said. “Obviously some youth have less school or university and won’t be in public school.” Dr. Reynolds said she figures the program will be a mix between physicians, public schools and colleges and universities. Other “health growing pains” involving the vaccinations include having enough vaccine on hand and getting the word out to par- ents. The health department gets the medicine from the Province de- pending on the number of expect- ed births, Dr. Reynolds said. That means around 500 doses a month. “Unfortunately there are 300 physicians (in Durham) who pro- vide immunization to children,” Dr. Reynolds said. “It may mean only a few does per physician. We’re trying to make sure if a phy- sician runs out they can get access to an adequate supply.” The phased-in approach to the new program can also be confus- ing for parents and caregivers, she added. If you have any questions or to find out if and when your child is eligible for the free vaccines, call the Durham Region health depart- ment at 905-723-8521 or toll free 1-800-841-2729, or at www.region. durham.on.ca. PICKERING – The Pickering Public Library wants to hear what teens want. The library is inviting teenagers to join the Pickering Public Li- brary teen advisory group, which will assist staff in its mission to improve teen services. Anyone between 13 and 19 years old who lives, works or goes to school in Pickering or Ajax can submit an application. The library is looking for both regular users and non-users and those teenag- ers with an interest in leadership roles and public service. Meetings take place once a month. Applications can be picked up at any Pickering Public Library branch or on the website at www. picnet.org/teens and should be submitted to the central branch by Wednesday, Sept. 15. But which specific shoe is best suited to out particular biomechanics and foot function? With everyday activities, the average person walks approximately 100,000 kilometers in their lifetime or about four times around the world. The foot must shock absorb on impact, adjust to contours in the ground or changes in surface firmness and propel you forward and back, up and down or sideways. The importance of a shoe type and proper fit cannot be over-emphasized for everyday activities, but it certainly takes on greater importance with athletics. The simplicity of the sport of running, an activity that can be done anywhere, anytime at any pace, by anybody seems to be lost when looking at a wall of shoes with over 150 different models. We are all thankful for the quality, technology and choice that manufacturers have put into their shoes but we need help in making a choice that will meet our needs. Almost all of us land slightly to the outside of the heel of our shoes, as evidence by the wear pattern. The foot then rolls inward slightly as your body’s weight is transferred to the forefoot and you begin to toe-off. As this happens, your arch will flatten and slightly elongate to better shock-absorb. This motion is called pronation. W hile some degree of pronation is normal for most of us, those who over- pronate do so because they have weaker arches, are flat-footed or have a greater degree of flexibility. The over-pronated foot will continue to roll inward as the arch collapses, leading to possible knee pain, shin splints or plantar fascitis. Under-pronators (supinators) have high-arched rigid feet. These feet are poorer shock absorbers and these people spend a greater amount of time with the gait cycle walking on the outside of their feet. One way to determine which group you belong to is to look at the wear pattern of your shoes. But don’t just look at the heel, as most of us will show a beveling of the heel to the outside. Look at the forefoot of the shoe. Over- pronators will have a greater wear along the big toe side of the shoe, while normal gait will leave the shoe worn out more in the middle of the forefoot. If your shoes have not worm out in any discernible way, another method to determine which group you belong to is to dampen the bottom of one foot. Step on a piece of paper or cardboard and observe the imprint left as compared to the arch height of the non-weight bearing foot. Shoes can be categorized into three groups: cushion, stability and motion control. W hich shoe type you need will depend on your gait, whether you pronate or supinate. Generally, in my office if you pronate or even slightly over-pronate, but do not experience any pain, a shoe of stability would be suggested. These offer some cushioning to shock absorb and some support for the arch. There are a wide variety of shoes in this category. Over-pronators are best treated with a motion-controlling shoe. These offer a greater amount of support and with a controlled heel counter and a straight last will try to direct the foot in a more neutral toe-off. A shoe with excessive cushioning is not advised. Under-pronators require a more cushioned shoe with a curved last. These shoes will help to shock absorb to compensate for the high arched rigid foot of a supinator. Lastly, if you have already seen a podiatrist and have been treated with a pair of ORTHOTICS to control over-pronation, a shoe of stability may be adequate. The combination of a rigid orthotic and a motion-controlling shoe may over correct your problem. If you have a specific question you would like answered, please send it to the News Advertiser c/o ASK THE PODIATRIST. *Free consultation *No referral necessary *Braces for adults and children *Evening and Saturday appointments available Dr. Christopher Tom Orthodontist Pickfair Plaza, 1794 Liverpool Rd. 905-839-1268 2001 & 2002 Ask The Podiatrist Don’t be a misfit...when buying shoes Ronald J. Puzzles and board games, a staple of our own childhoods, serve an important educational role in the lives of young children. Child development experts agree that babies and young children learn through play. The Family Education Network points out that while glitzy electron- ic media are all the rage, children will always love tradi- tional playthings like puz- zles or board games. Puzzles let kids learn and practice the many skills crucial for success in school. The educational value of puzzles and games is enhanced when parents and children play them together. Puzzles and games provide an enjoy- able way for parents to share in a child's delight in learning through play -- one of the most important parts of childhood. Putting together a puzzle helps children actively practice important skills such as inference, deduc- tive reasoning and the notion that whole objects are generally made up of parts. Playing and solving brain-teaser puzzles helps kids think creatively and exercise problem-solving skills. Manipulating the pieces and fitting them into their proper spaces sharpens their fine motor skills. Puzzles can also help children learn to solve problems. By trying several ways to fit a puzzle piece in place, kids are learning the value of flexible thinking and persistence. 1550 Bayly St. Unit 24 & 25 1134 Kingston Rd. www.deniselesterdance.com Come visit our Bayly Studio Monday - Thursday evenings and all day Saturday to register, or call 905-839-3041 DISCO FROG 4 firsts, High scoring Novice, Choreography award Puzzles Promote Play and Learning Susan Messmer School Of Dance 282 Monarch Ave. Unit #25 -Toddlers: 9:50 & 11:00 am - Infants: 1:00 pm A/P PAGE 20 NEWS ADVERTISER SUNDAY EDITION, September 12, 2004 www.durhamregion.com Advertising Feature Many parents look to after-school programs to offer constructive activities for their children during the after- school period. These programs do more than just pro- tect children from the many risks associated with being unsupervised after the school bell rings. Research continues to affirm the benefits of quality programs to children's emotional and intellectual growth. A Statistics Canada sur- vey on children's health revealed that children who participate in organ- ized activities outside of school such as sports, music, the arts or clubs, tend to have higher self- esteem, interact better with friends and perform better in school. Cindy Henderson's three children participate in vari- ous after-school programs at a Boys and Girls Club. "The program offers a safe, fun and happy environment for children and it allows me to work full-time, knowing that my boys are happy and content," says Henderson. She praises the skilled coun- sellors who act as mentors and whose positive influence have taught her children key life skills. "Counsellors are patient and kind. They show the children how important kindness and getting along are in today's society. They teach our children that dreams can be reality one day," says Henderson. Some of the best resources for quality after-school programs and services are your local Boys and Girls Club, Parks and Recreation department, community cen- tre, library or school. To help parents evaluate their options, Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada has partnered with Sears Canada to create "Does This Ring A Bell", a free resource available at www.bgccan.com that offers advice about after-school programs, childcare and tips for children who are home alone after school. When evaluating an after-school program start with both your needs and priorities and your child's. Consider practical aspects like location and hours, as well as the environment and content of the program. Is the location conven- ient to your child's school, home or your workplace? Will the hours work with your child's needs and your job? Does the program meet a wide variety of interests? How safe is the facility? Do you have confidence in the skills and atti- tudes of the caregivers? Have volunteers and staff undergone security screening? Drop by while the program is running to see how the staff inter- acts with children. Are the children engaged in fun, stimulating activities? Is the environment clean and com- fortable? Be sure to talk to parents who are already using the program. When it comes to making the final decision, the best after-school program for your family should meet your practi- cal needs and offer your child a range of stimulat- ing activities in a safe, caring envi- ronment. - News Canada Finding the right after-school program PICKERING PIANO Now Accepting Registration for Fall Lessons • PROFESSIONAL INSTRUCTION IN PIANO & THEORY • BEGINNERS OF ALL AGES • PREPARATION FOR ROYAL CONSERVATORY EXAMINATIONS • NO YEARLY MEMBERSHIP OR REGISTRATION FEES PRIVATE LESSONS 30 minutes - $12.50 Whites & Bayly (905) 837-2659 After-school programs c a n s t i m u l a t e y o u r c h i l d r e n a n d h e l p t h e m succeed in school. 905-420-6622 1064 Salk Road, Pickering www.catchingfireflies.ca K ENDA L WOOD P ARK P LAZA 1801 Dundas St. E. The Sylvan Advantage ® Pickering MP says work is underway to assist industry DURHAM – Bev Oda, the re- cently elected Conservative MP for Clarington-Scugog-Uxbridge, said she is going to help Opposi- tion Leader Stephen Harper put pressure on Prime Minister Paul Mar tin to rescue Canada’s beef in- dustry. A report was submitted by the Canadian Cattlemen’s Associa- tion to the federal government, suggesting a number of ways the Liberals could support the beef industry as farmers continue to experience the fallout from a case of Bovine Spongiform Encepha- lopathy discovered in a cow from Alberta in the spring of 2003. A press release from Ms. Oda’s Clarington-Scugog-Uxbridge of- fice states that the Canadian beef industry has been in crisis because of the continued blockage of cattle exports to the United States and that Mr. Harper, leader of the op- position, met with Ms. Oda to dis- cuss the report. “I am impressed with their rea- sonable and well-thought-out stra- tegic plan,” stated the Opposition leader in the press release. “I urge the government to carefully review the report’s recommendations and take action to save the industry. The Cattlemen’s Association has a unique appreciation of hard- ships faced by Canadian ranchers and beef produc- ers over the past year, coupled with a thorough understand- ing of how the industry operates.” In a sepa- rate press release, Ms. Oda said the Conservatives are concerned the federal government has no plan to deal with what will be the larg- est fall calf run in 25 years, and an existing surplus of more than 500,000 head of cattle. She said that so far, there is no sign the border will open up, and relief provided to operators through the federal government is short term and does little to make up for such challenges as the cost of over-wintering cattle that should have been sent to market. Ms. Oda wants other parties to work with the Conservatives to propose solutions and to assist farming families in Durham Re- gion and across Canada who are struggling. Dan McTeague, Liberal MP rep- resenting Pickering-Scarborough East, agreed the issue is important and pointed out that, slowly but surely, the borders are opening to certain cuts of beef from young cattle. He said the Liberal govern- ment has been putting pressure on the United States to fully open the beef trade again, but there’s only so much that can be done. “We have our work cut out for us,” said Mr. McTeague. “But Ameri- cans realize they have a role to play in trade lib- eralization.” Mr. Mc- Teague said Canadians might want to take no- tice of which country supplies beef to major food outlets. He also said that, when it comes to trade, there is no room for side deals or ex- tenuating circumstances, and one isolated incident of BSE does not constitute a trend. “We’re working with Japan and others to make sure these doors are reopened.” He added that the election in the United States is likely clouding much of what is going on and that things should get rolling again after ballots are cast in early November. And along with the work the Liber- al government is doing with other countries, Mr. McTeague said there is an offer on the table to help beef farmers that has to be matched by the provinces. Other issues are set to be addressed before the first minister’s conference, he said. Mr. McTeague described the Canadian beef industry as among the safest in the world, and is im- pressed with the transparent in- vestigation that followed the dis- covery of BSE in an Alberta cow. durhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, SEPTEMBER 12, 2004 PAGE 21 A/P Register for your “Pay Days” numbered keychain beginning Monday August 9th at 9:00 AM, and get in the game. Signups for the club’s winter house league and Ontario Basket- ball Association rep programs are at the Annandale Golf and Curling Club Sunday, Sept. 12, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The day also includes a 2-ball competition. There is also registration at the Ajax Community Centre on Sept. 12 from 5 to 7 p.m. in meeting room 1. The house league program focuses on the development of fundamentals and internal games. Meanwhile, the rep program is more competitive and includes games and tournament, along with weekly practices. The age groups for girls’ and boys’ rep teams are: novice (born 1996-1995); minor atom (1994); major atom (1993); bantam (1992); major bantam (1991); minor midget (1990); major midget (1989) and juvenile (1988-1987). Axemen drop final exhibition game to Wexford DURHAM — One area junior hockey club ended its pre-season campaign with a flourish; the other wasn’t so fortunate. The Pickering Panthers ended its OHA Ontario Provincial Junior ‘A’ Hockey League schedule on a solid note, defeating the visit- ing Capital District Selects from New York State 7-2 at the Pickering Recreation Complex on Thursday night. The Panthers led 2-1 after the opening 20 minutes and in- creased their lead to 5-2 after the second period. The victory lifted the Panthers exhibition record to 6-3-0. Meanwhile, the Ajax Axemen dropped their second pre-sea- son tilt in a row, losing 2-1 to the host Wexford Raiders at the Scar- borough Arena Gardens, also on Thursday night, to end their exhi- bition schedule with a 2-5 mark. The action starts for real today (Sunday) when the Axemen and Panthers meet to begin the 2004- 05 regular-season schedule at the Ajax Community Centre at 3 p.m. The teams played twice in the pre- season, earning a win apiece. Panthers rookie Gregg Riggs enjoyed another solid outing in the club’s final pre-season game. The hard-working forward scored twice and added two assists. Vet- eran forward Phil McIlhone also scored twice for Pickering. Other goal scorers were Derek Lynden, Richard Schofield and John Scrym- geour. Chris Chappell, who recently returned to the Panthers from the Ontario Hockey League’s Saginaw Spirit training camp, added three assists. Goaltender Ryan Daniels, who was also returned to the Panthers from Saginaw this week, had an- other solid outing. Making his first complete-game appearance, Dan- iels stopped 36 shots. Meanwhile, Thursday’s loss meant the Axemen dropped both games of their two-game pre-sea- son set with the perennially strong Raiders. They lost 8-4 in their first meeting earlier this month. Neither Ajax nor Wexford, how- ever, dressed its full roster on Thursday, with the Axemen hold- ing out four injured players who’ll be back in the lineup for today’s home opener. NOTES: The makeup of the South Conference is the same as last season. Along with the Axe- men and the Panthers in the di- vision are the Raiders, Oshawa Legionaires, Markham Waxers, Thornhill Thunderbirds, North Yo rk Rangers, St. Michael’s Buzzers and the Vaughan Vipers. Both Ajax and Pickering will be part of the league’s annual College Weekend slate of games. The games –– with every OPJAHL team playing at Mis- sissauga’s Erin Mills Twin Rinks from Sept. 17 to 19 –– give OHL, U.S. and Canadian college scouts a chance to evaluate all the play- ers under one roof. The Panthers play the West Conference’s Buffalo Lightning on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 12:30 p.m. Meanwhile, the Axemen play the Brampton Capitals, also of the West Conference, on Sept. 18 at 9:15 a.m. Both contests count in the regular-season standings... The Panthers home opener is on Sunday, Sept. 19 against the North Conference’s Huntsville Muskoka Otters at the Pickering Recreation Complex at 6 p.m. The Huntsville franchise suspended operations midway through last season... As like last season, the South and North Conferences will play an in- terlocking schedule this season... Above, inside you'll find his display of To p Quality Vinyl Windows. Wa yne Hutchison brings to the replacement window and door business a new and long overdue feature. It's a Mobile Showroom which just may be the only one in Canada. "The day is gone when you carried some brochures and a sample window to a cus- tomer's home," explains Wa yne. "So I obtained a retired North York Mobile Library truck and installed interior walls along with all of my window samples." When you call Durham Windows and Doors for a free estimate, Wayne will show up at your door with his Mobile Showroom which you'll enter by way of a sliding patio door. Inside, displayed on the walls, are the Vinyl Window Designs series of vinyl win- dows which you're free to operate and you'll discover the many special features includ- ing how they can be cleaned without going outside. "After being in this busi- ness for 25 years, I can hon- estly say these are the finest windows on the market," says Wayne. "They're triple sealed to reduce air leakage and come with heavy duty hard- ware." All Vinyl Window Designs windows come with Low E Glass which filters out the ultraviolet rays keeping your home cooler in the summer and eliminate fading of your curtains, drapes and furniture. All of the windows come with a lifetime warranty on the frame, hardware and glass. Wa yne would also like his customers to know that he does all of the estimates per- sonally, eliminating the cost of a salesper- son. MOBILE SHOWROOM It’s difficult to establish benchmarks and to comparison shop for a home renovator because peo- ple don’t shop for one as often as they shop for items such as shoes. Sam Beninato of Plumbing Mart says that a home renovation project should be a well thought out decisions. It could cost thousand of dollars and will affect your family for many years so enlisting the help of an expert is key. The first step is information gathering. Visit showrooms, websites and publications to learn what products are available on the market. Get an overview and then narrow it down to what you real- ly want. “The next step is having a face-to-face meet- ing with a specialist, not a generalist,” says Sam. “It’s important to work with a person you feel com- fortable with. A rapport has to be established as well as a bond of trust” HIRE A SPECIALIST General contractors usually have the skill to oversee an entire project and often contract out spe- cific parts of it. Specialists focus on one trade. They do it day-in, day-out. They usually work faster because there is no learning curve and they are dedicated to the work at hand. Sam says that consumers should look for spe- cialists such as those at Plumbing Mart, who can give them exact start dates, progress time and a sub- stantive completion date. “Buyers should be careful about vague time- lines,” he said. “If you’re told that a contractor can start work in July, does that mean at the beginning of July or a the end of the month? Your life could be turned upside down for a whole month.” Consumers should also ask how long a con- tractor has been in business. A contractor that just started his business may have great intentions, but may not be able to respond appropriately if an unforeseen problem is encountered. “Plumbing Mart has been in business for more than 40 years. If there is a problem we can make five phone calls and come up with five differ- ent solutions.” An established specialist will also have expe- rienced several home renovating trends throughout the years and come with its own innovations. WARRANTY Wa r ranty is a key point. Always ask if it cov- ers the product, service, labour, or all three. If a bathtub comes with a manufacturer’s warranty only, will your contractor remove it at no cost so that you can claim your warranty from the manufacturer? Is the cost of labour going to be charged to you? Only a specialist that stands behind all facets of its work can give consumers the peace of mind that they deserve. IT’S YOUR DREAM When telling your chosen renovator about your dream room, will that person follow your agen- da or his? A good renovator should be able to think outside the box and have the resources to deliver what you want. Once you have agreed on an idea, that renovator should shop for all parts needed to complete the job. Ensure that your renovator also commits to disposing of garage and to leaving your home clean so that your family can start to enjoy the newly ren- ovated kitchen or bathroom right away. Powell A loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, Brother, Friend April 3, 1922 - September 14, 2003 You were someone special Who can never be replaced Your memories in our daily lives Can never be erased. Time cannot steal the memories We carry in our hearts Or take away the happy years Of which you were a part. Those we love don't go away They walk beside us everyday. Unseen, unheard, but always near Still loved, still missed, still always dear. God took you home to prove to us, He only takes the best "We will always love you" Margaret Garry & (Pat), Diane & (Al), Judy & (Bill) Grandchildren Shelley & (Lars) Steven & (Emilie), Gerald & (Nicole) Luke & (Kim) Rahul & (Erin) Great grandchildren Mathew, Ryan, Jacob, Eric & Rachel DICKENS, Gordon - Gordon (Gord) Dickens, Sep- tember 8th. Passed away peacefully at his home after a short illness, surrounded by his loving family. Gord is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Ma- vis, his beloved daughters Beverley and husband Ron, Nicola and husband Tim, his loving grandchil- dren Heather, Amanda, Ashleigh, Jennifer, Shawn and fiance Vanessa and great-grandchildren Ethan and Jordyn. Gord will be sadly missed and forever remembered by his large loving family, as not only a great father, grandfather and great-grandfather, but as a man of such strength of character and moral for titude as to be a wonderful example of how a man should live his life. Gord was born in England and he and Mavis and daughters emigrated to Can- ada in 1967. He was employed by General Motors for 33 years, retiring in the year 2000 from the Bat- tery Plant as Maintenance Supervisor. He was also a member of Pickering Kinsmen Club since 1968 and was awarded the honour of Life Membership. His latter years in Kin have been spent as a mem- ber of the Pickering K40 Club, where he and Mavis have spent many hours in the company of wonder- ful friends, in fact more like family than friends! A celebration of his life will be held at his home on September 18th from 6:00pm. Friends and col- leagues are requested to contact a family member for details. At Gord's request a very simple crema- tion was held, also at his request in lieu of flowers, donations to Oshawa Lakeridge Palliative Care or the Cancer Society would be much appreciated. The family would like to thank all the staff at Pallia- tive Care for the wonderful help & kindness, with a special thanks to 'Ben' who is surely one of the best nurses in the world. Also, St. Elisabeth Nursing Care was very much appreciated, they are caring, dedicated, human beings and thank you to each of the nurses for their help. A Loving Birthday Remembrance BRYAN MATTHEW GAINER Sept. 13, 1988 - July 23, 2000 Today my Son, would have been your 16th birthday. We will always remember the way you looked, The way you walked and smiled. The things you always said and did, Are with us all the while. You never failed to do your best, Your heart was true and tender,. You lived your life for those you loved, And those who loved you - remember. The Power played against many top teams from Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennes- see, competing up a notch in the under-14 age group, as the under- 13 bracket doesn’t exist in the U.S. Undaunted, the Power proceed- ed to advance to the champion- ship game and used a Herculean effort to get past last year’s Mead CUSA Champions, Livonia United from Michigan to take the title. The game would ultimately be de- cided in penalty kicks. The teams played to a 1-1 draw through regulation time, with a further 20 minutes of overtime settling nothing. Livonia won the coin toss and kicked first. Pick- ering goalkeeper Sarah Dobush made a diving save. Arin King, Jill Morillo, Jenna Smith and Amber Pollari scored as did the remain- ing four Livonia players. Picker- ing’s last shooter, Kailey Chappell, calmly kicked in the game winner. King scored in regulation time for Pickering. Power dispatched Fort Wayne Academy 3-1 in the semifinal. Fort Wayne scored a couple of minutes into the game before Power rallied with two off the foot of Morillo. In the second half, King scored an insurance goal. Pickering started the tourna- ment with a 2-1 win over Cleve- land United from Ohio. Cleveland scored with about 10 minutes left in the first half. Power came out strong in the second and were rewarded when Michelle Dixon scored six minutes in to tie the game. Morillo then scored the winner with about 10 minutes left. Next up for Pickering was the hometown CUSA 90 Premiers from Dayton, with Pickering earn- ing a 2-0 victory. Morillo and King scored in the second half. This set up the last game of round-robin play against the Ann Arbor (Michigan) Arsenal, also undefeated. The Power were ready for this game, but Ann Arbor scored 10 minutes into the game. King tied it with 10 minutes left in the first half and then added two more goals in the second half to seal the victory. The Power have enjoyed a suc- cessful year. They were semifinal- ists in the West Niagara Invita- tional, finalist in the Pickering PSC Power Invitational, won the cham- pionship at the COVI tournament for the third time in four years, and also captured their division title at the Robbie International tourna- ment. Other team members are Ka- trina Clarke, Gaetana Gianfriddo, Sarah Brown, Charlene Gibbons, Kristian Visconti, Nicollette Evans, Carolyn Hintze, Laura Taglioni, Al- annah Wakefield, Sarah Litherland and Amanda Morelli. Ian Brown coaches the team, assisted by Mike King. Angie King is the trainer and Paul Dixon is the manager. Under-10 Cougars claw Cup foes PICKERING — The Pickering Cougars boys’ under-10 rep soc- cer team was definitely up for the challenge at the Thornhill Interna- tional Challenge Cup Tournament recently. The Cougars put the bite on the To ronto Eagles in the final, win- ning 4-0 to capture their fourth tournament crown of the season. The victory also meant the Cou- gars had successfully defended their title after winning the event as an under-nine team last season. Playing Kleinburg in the semifi- nals, the Cougars prevailed 2-1 in a rough-and-tumble affair that saw two Pickering players injured dur- ing the contest. Pickering easily won its quarter- final match over Bolton 5-0. The Pickering boys won three of their four qualifying-round games, defeating Ajax 6-0, Cataraqui 5-1 and Markham 4-1. The lone blem- ish was a 2-2 tie with Kleinburg, which scored the tying goal with just seconds remaining in the con- test. Te am members are Gorki Filin- ov, Trystan Colaire, Darien Hafiz, Nicholas Axhorn, Ryan Boylan, Peter Boylan, Bruce Cullen, Jus- tin Haywood, Anthony Novak, Ra- phael Reynolds, Sean Smith, Chris Funke and Shane Satar.
