Ms. Gibbs lives at Brock and Taunton roads in a home expro- priated by the provincial govern- ment in the 1970s. She and her father have rented the home for 24 years. The ORC held the open house to answer questions about the class environmental assessment currently being undertaken on the provincially owned lands in Pickering, known as Seaton. Parts of those lands are going to be sold or swapped for privately owned lands on the Oak Ridges Moraine in Richmond Hill. Ms. Gibbs, who was notified of the meeting in a letter, found out her home lies in the land desig- nated as a natural heritage sys- tem, which means it is going to stay in public ownership and not be sold or swapped. She doesn’t know what that means for her and her father. “Our dream has always been to live there,” she said. “(I want to know) if, in fact, we can buy the property and stay there.” Unfortunately for Ms. Gibbs that is a question for the consul- tants conducting the land use ® • SALES • SERVICE • LEASING • RENTALS • BODY SHOP 503 Kingston Rd., Pickering www.pvw.com (905) 420-9700 “Try The Best” PICKERING VOLKSWAGEN INC. Good, bad and ugly Regional smoking bylaw has resulted in mixed reaction By Carly Foster Staff Writer DURHAM – It’s been three months since the region-wide smoke-free bylaw went into ef- fect, and the reaction is mixed: Some places are gaining busi- ness, others are suffering, a hand- ful are trying to become private clubs, and the Region says the rate of compliance is great. Only one business - a gas sta- tion in Oshawa - has been official- ly charged under bylaw 66-2002, said John Ingrao, manager of en- vironmental health. An employee was smoking inside the kiosk, re- sulting in three charges. “I thought we’d get a lot more out of that type of business,” Mr. Ingrao said. Durham’s smoke-free bylaw bans smoking in all public and workplaces, except long-term care facilities, casinos, race tracks and bingo halls, which can have designated smoking rooms (DSR). The department is also contin- uing an investigation into a bar in Ajax that is “attempting” to con- vert itself into a private club, Mr. Ingrao said. The bylaw says smoking is allowed in private clubs such as Royal Canadian Le- gions. “It’s a fairly high test to attain the benchmark of becoming a bona fide private club,” he said. “Our interpretation is that that particular establishment has not been able to establish they truly are a private club.” While the health department would not give the name of the bar until charges have been laid and proven in court, an assigned director of the Rec Room at Westney Road and Bayly Street confirmed it is his establishment. And he says the “social club” is in the right. “It’s a private, members-only club exactly like the Legion, which is exactly why the Region doesn’t have a case,” said Shaun Collier, also a local Ajax council- lor and accountant whose broth- er and sister-in-law owned the former bar before it became a club. “(Now) there’s no ownership. By Jeff Mitchell Staff Writer DURHAM – The retired On- tario Provincial Police offi- cer appointed to try former Drug Enforcement Unit boss Tom Andrews on charges of insub- ordination has been asked to re- cuse himself to avoid any appear- ance of bias. On Thursday, Bernie O’Brien, the lawyer repre- senting Det. An- drews at the Po- lice Services Act tribunal, said re- tired OPP Super- intendent Greg Connelly should step down, and that a judge should be appointed to hear the charges. During the brief hearing at a Whitby police station, Mr. O’Brien said Durham Regional Police Chief Kevin McAlpine’s appointment of Mr. Connelly was “ill-ad- vised.” “Frankly, sir, it was inap- propriate,” Mr. O’Brien told Mr. Connelly. A hearing on the recusal motion will be held Nov. 30. Mr. O’Brien said he intends to call the chief as a witness to explain why he did not appoint a judge to oversee the tribunal, as is allowed under the Police Services Act. When the hearing takes place, OPP officers will be among the witnesses to give testimony, Mr. O’Brien said. Mr. Connelly’s past as a high- ranking officer with that police service could cre- ate an “apprehen- sion of bias,” he asserted. Steven Boorne, the lawyer represent- ing Durham po- lice at the tri- bunal, said he’d save his arguments for the November hearing. “Det. Andrews is entitled to bring the motions he’s going to bring,” Mr. Boorne told the hearings officer. As happened during his first appearance before the tribunal in July, police offi- cers crowded into the small hearing room to show sup- port for Det. Andrews, who was removed as head of the drug unit when an investi- gation into allegations of criminal conduct was launched in February of 2003. Last week the OPP announced no criminal charges will result from its review of more than 270 DEU files. At the time of his trans- fer, Det. Andrews was or- dered not to communicate with any other members of the unit, all of whom were told they were being inves- tigated by the OPP. He was charged with three counts of insubordination for al- legedly breaching that order when former DEU of- ficers were interviewed by the OPP at Durham police headquarters in Oshawa April 15 of this year. He has also been charged under the Police Services Act with discreditable con- duct for allegedly getting into a verbal confrontation with two of the OPP officers conducting the DEU probe. Yesterday, Mr. O’Brien said he will challenge the validity of the order that led to the insubordination charges. “The lawfulness of that order will be put in dis- pute,” he told Mr. Connelly. Three other former DEU cops face insubordination charges for failing to com- ply with orders to give statements to the OPP dur- ing the probe, said Doug Cavanaugh, president of the Durham Regional Po- lice Association. The charges were laid in April on the day the officers agreed to the interviews and are still being pursued by the force, despite the fact the cops eventually complied with the order to speak to OPP investigators, the union boss said. Meanwhile, Durham’s Police Services Board will not pursue a complaint lodged by Det. Andrews against Chief McAlpine for the way in which the DEU probe has been conducted. Board chairman Doug Moffatt said this week the Police Services Act does not allow one officer to file a complaint against another. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, September 3, 2004 PAGE 3 A/P Charitable Registration No. BN10762354R0001 Prize Donations are welcome! Defence wants OPP officer to step down KEVIN McALPINE Board won’t pursue complaint. study on behalf of the Ministry of Municipal Affairs, not the consul- tants conducting the EA. “I’ve been so excited waiting for this meeting and I still don’t know anything,” she said after talking with one of the consul- tants from Marshall Macklin Monaghan. The meeting held Wednesday evening in Pickering attracted lit- tle attention from a community known to come out by the hun- dreds when the issue of Seaton pops up. During the first half of the four-hour open house there were more consultants than citi- zens in the gymnasium at the Agape Temple Seventh Day Ad- ventist Church. Bob Johnson came out to hear about the EA. “Living in the area, I feel strongly that we need to make our opinion known on the land that we’re living on,” he said. For the most part, Mr. Johnson thought the plan looked realistic. He was happy to see where the natural heritage system would be and that there was one. “This is a fair option for the public and I appreciate the op- portunity to see it,” he said. One area of concern was that visitors to the open house were asked to make comments on the environmental implications of the option. “How does anybody know what the environmental impacts are without knowing land use?” he wondered. Tom Melymuk from the City of Pickering dropped in to see what the open house was presenting. The City is seeking to have the class EA bumped up to a full indi- vidual EA because of the unique nature of the Seaton lands. Coun- cil passed a motion to that effect in the spring. “We’re not sure of the rationale for not having the full environ- mental assessment,” he said. With the full EA, a process would have to be created that is project-specific, whereas with the class EA a series of set steps are followed that can be used from project to project. The City is meeting with the ORC to discuss the bump up next week. The public has two more op- portunities for comments on the EA and land exchange at open houses in the fall. An open house regarding the ministry’s land use plan is Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. at the Pickering Recreation Complex. It is the second in a series of meet- ings of which the first was held in June. A/P PAGE 6 NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, September 3, 2004 www.durhamregion.com Be careful out there Wa t ch out for kids who don’t watch out for themselves It's been a long summer. And, after more than two months of cruising through school zones while most educational facilities sit vacant, it's time for a cold dash of driver reality. Thousands of children, beginning bright and early Tuesday morning, will be heading back to school. That means they'll be crossing busy streets, and, kids being kids, that also means they will sometimes go on roads when they shouldn't. Ultimately, drivers must be extra cautious, especially near school zones. You really never do know when you will have to come to a sudden and complete stop. Pay attention to the road and obey the posted speed limits near school zones. That makes it a little easier to slam on the brakes if the need arises. Don't forget there will be a convoy of school buses hitting our roadways come Tuesday. No matter from what direction you approach a school bus, you absolutely must stop when its f lashers are lit up. Children could be coming from any direc- tion to get on or off the bus, and a few seconds spent waiting until the flashers turn off could literally make the difference between life and death. Make sure you pay close attention. Such caution also extends to going in and out of driveways, checking repeatedly in both directions - especially to your right when making a right-hand turn - when making turns at intersections (watch for pedestrians, there are many more young people crossing streets); making sure you don't try to beat amber or even red lights. It also means giving pedestri- ans the right of way when making turns on green lights when the pedestrian has the walk sign. Driving at this time of year also means taking extra care when you drop off your kids at school, especially if you are lined up behind other vehicles. Make an extra effort to look in all directions. You never know when a small child could be right behind or right in front of your car. Above all, don't rush. The little bit of extra time you spend to take care is all that's needed and it could save a young life. Be sure about your surroundings and be aware out there. After Labour Day, it all changes. Make sure you're as ready for school-year driving as your kids will be for their first day back in class. Perdita a great ex ample for sport To the editor: The past few days have been a whirl- wind of mixed sentiments surrounding one of our Olympic gold medal con- tenders, Perdita Felicien of Pickering. As a former Canadian Olympic trialist, University of Alabama alumni/athletic scholarship recipient, and former mem- ber of the esteemed Hamilton Olympic Track and Field Club, I am truly proud of Perdita’s progressive attitude and her continuous drive towards achievement at her sport. While many Canadian citizens held an opinion, no one could predict the out- come of the Olympic hurdle finals. But as expected, Perdita handled herself with the grace and dignity of a veteran ath- lete. Canadians need to remember that Perdita is No. 1 in the world and will con- tinue to be a predominant force on Cana- da’s national sports scene, the world stage and at future Olympic Games. The recent Games have proven to be a win-win event for all Canadians, includ- ing athletes and government bodies. Through our medal standing we show our strengths and weaknesses. It is my hope that government officials whom manage development funds take a long hard look at our athletic weakness- es and implement financial support pro- grams to build our athletic strengths. Reasons for optimism because it can't get much worse There are more questions than answers as the two local junior 'A' hockey teams -- the Ajax Axemen and Pickering Pan- thers -- get set to kick off the regu- lar season in a little more than a week. Such as: Are they going to tread water as they've done for too many seasons? Will they abandon their constant 'youth movement' philoso- phy in favour of developing and keeping talent? Can hockey fans ex- pect competitive seasons rather than enduring so-so results on a consistent basis? For the Panthers, everything points to the fact they're on the way up -- how far up remains a mystery. For the Axemen, it's definitely a wait-and-see proposition. A season ago, the teams ran neck-and-neck for the dubious dis- tinction of finishing in the cellar of the OHA Ontario Provincial Junior 'A' Hockey League's South Confer- ence standings. In the end, the Ax- emen were dead last with a lowly 13- 32-2-2 record and, quite rightly, lost in four straight games to Wexford in the opening playoff round. The Panthers didn't fare much better, finishing second-last with a dismal 12-30-7-0 mark, resulting in a first-round sweep at the hands of the powerhouse Newmarket Hurri- canes. Pickering has undergone a major shift in the off-season, beginning with its sale to an ownership quar- tet headed by longtime Ontario Hockey League coach and Markham resident Rick Cornac- chia, Paul Fenwick and Randy Heb- scher, of Toronto, and John Porco, also of Markham. All four have an ownership interest in the Toronto Red Wings of the Greater Toronto Hockey League. The group has worked diligently in the off-season to restore the club to its former lustre, including bring- ing back its former uniforms and colour scheme, hiring a marketing firm and generally honouring the Panthers' 30-plus year tradition. Moreover, ownership and new general manager Frank Robinson have surrounded second-year head coach John Winder with enough quality veterans to give the club a real chance of moving up signifi- cantly in the standings. Meanwhile, Axemen owner, head coach and general manager, Larry Labelle, is on the right track by keeping veterans rather than bring- ing in rookies and then hoping they'll somehow mature quickly and put it all together on the ice. Labelle has a solid core of return- ing players to work with that, aug- mented with a few off-season acqui- sitions, will hopefully have the club headed upwards. Things simply have to get better for these teams this season because they can't get much worse. Al Rivett's column appears every third Friday. E-mail arivett@ durhamregion.com. Only one way to go for junior hockey clubs Editorials &Opinions FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2004 ✦ News Advertiser ✦ DAVID STELL, NEWS EDITOR, 905-683-5110 EXT. 249 Editorial Letters to the Editor Al Rivett s p o r t s e d i t o r By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING –The proposed public alerting system for Pickering and Ajax was an item of discussion at the annual Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) last week. Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan met with a representative from the Min- istry of Community Safety and Cor- rectional Services to talk about the issue, which has upset many resi- dents and councillors in the city. “I had a meeting with the parlia- mentary assistant to Monte Kwinter (the minister),” he said. “The purpose of that was to talk about public alert- ing and our concerns with that.” The City is going to work with Emergency Management Ontario on a public alerting system for the area around the Pickering Nuclear Gener- ating Station. The Province has mandated a pub- lic alerting system for a three-kilome- tre radius around the station, but when the system purchased by the Region of Durham (and paid for by Ontario Power Generation) was un- veiled to the public in the spring the response wasn’t positive. The nearly 300 who came out to two public meet- ings, as well as several councillors, want an alternative to what they call outdated and archaic technology. There was a concern about the mu- nicipality not complying with the provincial regulation, but Ward 1 Re- gional Councillor Maurice Brenner sees the discussions as a positive sign. “As much as we need an emergency public alerting system, they’re going to let us work it out,” he said. “There was concern that we were going to be forced into something and that’s not going to happen.” Coun. Brenner has been a strong advocate of finding alternatives. “I want to be very careful before we move forward with anything, before we go back to the community.” www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, September 3, 2004 PAGE 7 P LIMITED TIME OFFER. ® Reg. Details of the deal were discussed at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) conference in Ottawa last week. Premier Dalton McGuinty an- nounced the Province would deal with AMO (an umbrella group representing more than 400 municipalities, which Durham Region chairman Roger Ander- son is now the president of) in giving out money. “I was quite pleased with what I heard - most with the pieces that relate to AMO as a lobbying body,” Coun. Brenner said. “That’s going to be good for Pickering and Durham.” He said Pickering and the eastern GTA have never received its fair share of money for infrastructure and other projects. Ryan likes what he hears PICKERING – Discussions around planning at last week’s Association of Municipalities of Ontario annual confer- ence piqued Mayor Dave Ryan’s inter- est. “Generally municipalities are pleased that the government is return- ing the responsibility to municipalities for planning issues,” he said. He added municipalities were pleased to hear discussion about how new policies will unfold, for example re- garding the proposed Greenbelt through the GTA. At the Fox and Fiddle in Uxbridge, owner Shaun Israelstam said busi- ness has been slow. “But is it because of no smoking or patio weather or barbecue season? I don’t know,” he said. “They should have introduced no smoking in the winter so you could really tell.” Mr. Israelstam said the majority of his smoking patrons can now be found at the local Legion where they can smoke. “But it’s opened up the doors for non-smoking families and older clientele,” he said. “I’ve lost in liquor (sales), but gained in food.” At Jesters Court in Port Perry, it’s hard to tell whether the bylaw has had any effect, said Manager Donna Lucas. “It hasn’t really affected us now be- cause we have the patio,” she said. “The patio is not only smokers...but we do have our normal smoking crowd out there.” Rob MacArthur, the owner of the Puck and Beaver in Ajax who has been very outspoken against the bylaw all through its inception, said his sales are down 10 to 20 per cent since last summer. “We’ve had to let a few people go, and there’s not as much entertain- ment,” he said. “The patio is very busy with all the smokers, and no new business from non-smokers. “We’ve shut down a lot of nights now at 11:30 or midnight, and we’ve never done that before,” he said. “People say they’re staying home with a case of beer.” As of July 30, the Region has made 2,900 inspections plus 440 undercover surveillances, resulting in 3,340 ac- tions, Mr. Ingrao said. Most of those were minor sign violations or minor issues with DSR construction. “We’re really happy and we owe it all to the businesses,” Mr. Ingrao said. “99.99...per cent of these are compliant Canadian business peo- ple.” Regional council has amended the smoking bylaw twice since it came into effect June 1: once to allow DSRs in long-term care facilities, and again to allow unrestricted smoking at Great Blue Heron Charity Casino on Scugog Island. Club is private, says councillor ✦ Club from page 1 DURHAM –Has your water been a bit stinky lately? The earthy, musty smell is nothing to worry about, say Durham Region officials. “The odour is a natural phe- nomenon associated with a rise in lake water temperature and the release of low levels of com- pounds produced by the growth and...decomposition of certain types of algae in Lake Ontario,” said Thom Sloley, plant opera- tions manager for the works de- partment. The Oshawa, Whitby, Newcas- tle and Bowmanville treatment plants are unable to remove all the odour, and it may persist from your taps, Mr. Sloley said. The Ajax Water Supply Plant has four granular-activated car- bon filters to reduce taste and odour levels. “The water continues to be safe to drink,” Mr. Sloley as- sured. “Laboratory testing of both the raw and treated water confirms that its bacteriological quality remains unaffected.” The water meets all the stan- dards imposed by the Province, he added. Similar odours hit Lake On- tario water - including Durham’s - in 1993, 1994, 1998, 1999 and 2003. Judge once represented colleague of MP’s lawyer PICKERING –Due to a possible conflict of interest, the start of a small claims trial between Chai- tanya Kalevar and MP Dan McTeague was adjourned Wednesday. Deputy Judge Stan Raphael noted it could be “perceived” as a conflict of interest that he had represented a lawyer at the firm of John Cannings, who is repre- senting the Pickering-Scarbor- ough East MP. Mr. Kalevar ob- jected to the judge hearing the case, leading to the adjourn- ment. Mr. Kalevar asked that Deputy Judge Shan Jain proceed with the trial as he has already presided over motions on the matter. Judge Raphael advised Mr. Kalevar to file an application to make that request. “I really do object to your con- flict with Mr. Cannings and I also believe Mr. Jain, who is familiar with this case and who has made several rulings on the case, (should hear it),” he said. Mr. Kalevar claims Mr. McTeague misrepresented him- self by stating in campaign liter- ature that he had a master’s de- gree in economics from the Uni- versity of Toronto. In fact, Mr. McTeague has a four-year bache- lor of arts from the university. The reference to a master’s was also included in the Parliamen- tary guide, which includes a bi- ography of each MP, for several years after Mr. McTeague was elected in 1993. Mr. Cannings indicated he in- tended to file an application re- questing a superior court judge hear the trial so if Mr. McTeague wins, no more suits relating to this case can be brought forward. A new date has not been set for the trial. Cornish Public School. Durham District School Board trustees approved it at a July budget meeting, meaning a full- time, day custodian for both Cor- nish and its custodial twin, Prince Albert Public School. But the move did not survive budget ap- proval last week. “The real frustrating parts are that it took so long to get to this end and there wasn’t even the courtesy of a phone call (to in- form us a decision had been made),” said Ms. Paterson, the Cornish school community coun- cil (SCC) chairwoman. “That’s a bit maddening when you think of all the time and effort we put in.” Trustees have been debating twinning, where a full-time custo- dian is shared by more than one school, since Ms. Paterson and Claire Marsh, the Prince Albert chairwoman, first raised the issue in January. The women argue that having one day-time custodi- an for the schools, with a com- bined population of about 1,000 students, means the schools can- not be properly maintained and even presents safety hazards for students and staff. At the Aug. 24 budget meeting, trustees in a recorded vote were deadlocked 5-5 on the issue when board chairwoman Elizabeth Roy broke the tie with a ‘no.’ Scugog Trustee Steve Martin had mo- tioned for a full-time custodian at Cornish starting today (Sept. 1). “I really question the role of the SCCs,” Ms. Paterson says. “If we can’t make a difference with an issue like this, what can we make a difference on?” She says parents should be concerned about safety, even though some trustees and staff members doubted their claims of dangers such as slushy floors dur- ing the winter months. “Definitely I think they should be concerned and now that it’s on the minds of the parents, you might see them take this up,” said Ms. Paterson. Trustee Martin in an interview, said it seemed “ridiculous” for trustees to approve the idea at the education finance, or budget committee level and then turn it down with the budget. After re- peatedly trying to get his motion passed, he suggested he had done all he could. “From a trustee’s point of view, I don’t know what other avenues we can pursue,” he said. The issue for most board mem- bers has been the cost and impli- cation of untwinning the Scugog schools, since staff and trustees have repeatedly said it would prompt requests from others. Pickering Trustee Sherry Croteau said “it seems crazy to me” that there isn’t a full-timer at the school already, noting parents have repeatedly approached the board on the issue. She agreed with the parents that during the winter, when slush is being tracked into the school, not hav- ing a custodian on hand at all times is dangerous. “This isn’t the first time we’ve untwinned a school,” said Trustee Croteau. “I don’t see how this is going to cause others to become untwinned.” Trustee Roy noted that in other cases, the untwinning has come about because a school was closed or two school communities merged into one. Oshawa Trustee Kathleen Hopper said she was worried that the estimated $24,000 cost to un- twin the Scugog schools has to come from somewhere else in the budget. And if others press to be- come untwinned, she said it could mushroom into a $200,000 propo- sition. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, September 3, 2004 PAGE 11 A/P Why spend all weekend shopping for that certain piece of furniture. As parents, we should make sure our children learn these skills at an early age, so that as they grow up in a success-oriented society, they will be prepared to handle any situation. Good manners portray an attitude of respect and thoughtfulness for others. Unfortunately, our society seems to be lacking in the most basic common courtesies, such as saying “please” and “thank you,” holding a door open for ladies and giving up one’s seat for a senior citizen. But that doesn’t mean our children have to. As parents, we should not only teach our children common courtesies but insist that they behave with common courtesies each day, with other children as well as with adults. It is our responsibility to set a good example for our children. Children emulate their parents’ behavior, so if they see you performing common courtesies to others, they’ll want to do the same. We want the best for our children, so we send them to good schools, enroll them in sports programs and take them to museums for a well-rounded upbringing. But it’s the fine-tuning that manners can bring to a child that will set them apart from their peers throughout their lifetime. Teaching good manners to your kids now will help them build confidence. In a social setting, they will know how to behave, which, in turn, will improve their self-esteem. As we become a more global society, manners will become even more important. Corporations now shell out big bucks to teach their managers and executives how body language, good manners and poise play an important role in meetings. Help your kids stay ahead of the pack. Many communities offer classes in manners for children of all ages. Find one in your community and sign your child up today for a lesson that will last a lifetime. News from all over Durham Reg ion Now online at durhamregion.com The News Advertiser Metroland Durham Region Media Group Billboard SEPTEMBER 3, 2004 Volunteers build ramp for young boy By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING – Reilly Wilson watches the men drilling, sawing and hammering from his kitchen window. The five-year-old Picker- ing boy waits as the crew of volunteers puts in the last few hours of work on the ramp and deck that is going to give the independent youngster the accessibility he desires. Reilly has myotubular myopathy and as a result is quadriplegic and is on a ventilator 24 hours a day. Previously unable to go out- side by himself to enjoy the beautiful late August day, that has changed because of the helping hands of many volunteers. Reilly’s father Ray Wilson said the new deck and ramp is going to give his son more of the freedom he wants. The work was completed Aug. 25. “He loves to be indepen- dent and he loves to be on his own and now all you have to do is open the door and he’s free to go,” Mr. Wil- son said. “This has created an unbelievable amount of accessibility for him.” The volunteers are part of Team Depot - a community service project run by The Home Depot. Colleen Knaggs, who has worked at the Ajax Home Depot for five years, re- ceived a letter in late June from Grandview Children’s Centre, which is affiliated with Reilly’s school, Camp- bell Children’s School in Os- hawa, outlining his situa- tion. Ms. Knaggs met with the Wilsons and knew helping was something she and her associates had to do. Sean Bourke designed the deck and ramp. The fa- ther of two has 20 years of construction experience. “(Ms. Knaggs) asked if I would help her and I imme- diately said yes,” he said. Mr. Bourke, a member of Team Depot, couldn’t resist the cause. “The fact that he needed more mobility, that he was usually stuck in the house and that he didn’t have ac- cess to his backyard (moti- vated me),” he said. He was on site all day Monday and Tuesday, as well as part of the day Wednesday to make sure everything was completed. Mr. Wilson said seeing all the volunteers turn out to help didn’t surprise him as he has dealt with many helpful people in the store. But there was one thing he didn’t expect. “What really surprised me was a lot of the people who came by also had shifts that day,” he said, adding some volunteered from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and then worked an eight-hour shift. “I thought that was pretty astounding.” His wife Krissy Wilson on the other hand was pretty amazed when she discov- ered they were going to come and do this, he said. “The most astonishing thing is it is not a question of whether or not we can af- ford to do it,” she said. “The way they approach it is hav- ing a child with special needs is one thing, but if they can take care of an ex- pense that we wouldn’t nor- mally have they wanted to help,” he said. The volunteers wouldn’t even let Mr. Wilson lift a hammer. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, September 3, 2004 PAGE 17 A/P GET ON THE 416 869 3200 1 888 GET ON GO TTY ONLY: 1 800 387 3652 THE LEAVES AREN’T THE ONLY THINGS CH ANGING THIS FALL. By David Blumenfeld Staff Writer DURHAM – The first Pagan Pride Festival in Durham Region occurs in Whitby on Sept. 19. “I have been involved the past five years in the To ronto Pagan Pride events, but because Durham has quite a large community of pagans, and people practising alterna- tive religions, I decided that we needed to have one out here,” local coordinator Dana Rondeau said. The festival marks the autumn equinox - one of four major celebrations ob- served by pagans through- out the year - and is affiliat- ed with the Pagan Pride Project, a global organiza- tion whose mission is to re- duce discrimination against Pagan religions. The Whitby festival be- g ins at noon in Rotary Sunrise Lake Park, 269 Wa t er St., and will feature a Pagan religious ceremony and information on spiritu- al practices, games for adults and children, and a drumming circle. Atten- dees are also asked to bring a donation or non-perish- able food item for the AIDS Committee of Durham. “The Autumn Equinox is a turning of the season. It’s an opportunity to be grate- ful for the harvest that we’ve had from spring until now,” said Ms. Rondeau, who lives in Bowmanville and coordinates volunteers for the AIDS Committee of Durham. “We’ve all kept ourselves fed over this past season, and now we want to provide for people who may be able to provide for themselves over the win- ter.” Ms. Rondeau, who runs a social gathering of pagans in Oshawa once a month, said there are many mis- conceptions about modern paganism. She described it as a rapidly growing na- ture-based religion found- ed on combinations of an- cient polytheism and mod- ern eco-spirituality. It in- cludes some common tra- ditions, such as Wicca or Witchcraft, Asatru and Druidry, she said. “It would be very difficult to just list a common de- nominator with all of them, but I feel comfortable say- ing there’s definitely a rev- erence for nature. There’s a very strong connection with the elements. It’s very rare to find any pagan practising their spirituality indoors. It’s an outdoor thing,” she explained. “I believe there’s still a very strong misconception about the whole idea of devil worshipping. I mean, there are satanists, but they’re not Wiccans, they’re not Druids...sa- tanism is a whole different category,” she said. “I know from my personal experi- ence being involved with To ronto Pagan Pride, we’ve had people approach us after watching what we do...and say ‘Oh, you need to be saved. You need to get away from this devil wor- shipping.’” Ms. Rondeau said a large number of pagans are in- volved in a variety of envi- ronmental projects and charitable work. They come from all walks of life, and hold ethical standards emphasizing respect for nature and humanity. Nevertheless, there are some pagans in Durham who are hesitant to share their alternative religions with others, she said. “There are people who are choosing to not let peo- ple in their workplace know that they’re, say a witch, or a druid, because they don’t feel that the workplace is necessarily going to be ac- cepting...that they’re going to be ostracized,” Ms. Ron- deau said. But interest and curiosi- ty about the movement continues to grow, she said. “People just want to know what’s out there. They’re not so quick to ac- cept, ‘OK, this is how I was raised, so I must be this way,’” she said. For more information about the festival, e-mail Dana Rondeau at dana_rondeau@yahoo.ca. She describes her work as “realistic and represen- tational” with a high de- gree of realism. “Not photo realism, but a painterly realism,” she explains. “It seems to be inspired by the things I see around me.” Ball has been painting seriously since the age of 15. “Before that even, it was one of my main interests,” she says. “I preferred that to going outside. I had to be forced outside to play with friends.” Now she’s a mother herself, with a 10-year-old son and an eight-year-old daughter, living with her husband in Ajax since 1990. She grew up in North York and moved here from Scar- borough. She started her serious artwork using acrylic on Masonite, she says, and her most “prevalent mediums” today are still acrylic but on canvas now, with wa- tercolour work as well. Her lifelong interest in paint- ing is hard to describe, but she sums it up, saying “It’s like something you have to do.” The McLean show, on until Sept. 15, has approxi- mately 22 pieces. She has also had a show at the Pickering Nuclear Informa- tion Centre and her work has garnered high praise in juried art shows, including awards in two PineRidge Arts Council exhibitions. The McLean Community Centre is at 95 Magill Dr., Ajax, and is open to the public Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. and on Saturday and Sun- day from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Admission is free. Teams remain unbeaten after blitzing York Region Raiders DURHAM — The Ajax-Pickering Dolphins’ juggernaut continues to gather strength on the foot- ball field. The tyke, atom and peewee squads kept their unbeaten re- cords intact by running rough- shod over the York Region Raiders in Markham last Sun- day. The peewees (3-0) met little resistance, routing the hosts 64-0. The game, for all in- tents and purposes, was over in the first half, with Ajax-Picker- ing rolling to a 42-0 lead. Power running back Andrew Quittenton led the offence as he gained close to 200 yards rush- ing and scored two touchdowns. Running back Clayton Robi- chaud added two touchdowns and 100 yards. The second half belonged to quarterback Tosh Miller-Francis who ran for a touchdown and directed a bal- anced running and passing at- tack. Jordan Nguyen and Kyle Goff added majors. Quarterback Andrew Lim guided the Dolphins’ first-half onslaught, while placekicker Jordan McLaughlin added 12 points. Offensive linemen David West, Marc Gregoire, Greg Sheremeta, Taylor Rice, Adam Rooke, Al- exander Ko, Jed Reid, Brendan Farrell and Ian Tobias dominat- ed the Raiders’ line. The defence was rock solid, recording a safety and not allow- ing a first down. Defensive line- men Peter Iyamu, Brian Slack, Kayden White, Jamal Watson, Kirk Thurston and Paul Mad- deaux controlled the line of scrimmage. The special teams caused the Raiders to fumble on numerous occasions and punt return spe- cialist David Delgado scored a touchdown. Meanwhile, the atoms (3-0) scored a decisive 38-0 shutout win. Quarterback Mikhael Cadiz completed a long pass to Deli- no Smith to start the game. Running back Dillon Campbell rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns. Kareem Tucker, Cole Tudor, Tyler Grayer, Kel- dyn Ahlstedt and Sandy Scot- land also chipped in offensively. Jonathan Gray played briefly at the running back spot, earning a first down before being injured. Quarterback Jeffrey McIlravey was also injured. Quarterback Richard Quittenton scored a touchdown. Placekicker and wide receiver Smith went 4-for-5 in point-after attempts. The defence received intercep- tions for touchdowns from Rob Sinclair and fellow linebacker Shane Lock, fumble recoveries from Greg Farrell and Brandon Misseri, and sacks from Andy Horodnyk and Adrian William- son. Dustin Kaupp, Jelane Rob- erts and Dexter Damboise all performed well on defence. The tykes also got their licks in on the Raiders, winning 36-0. The tykes (3-0) started quickly and didn’t let off the gas, piling up a 24-0 halftime lead. Running back Denver Wright scored two touchdowns on off- tackle runs and quarterback Mi- chael Stobbart scored once on a keeper in the first half. In the second half, quarterback Alex Horodnyk was equally successful at running the offence. Running back Conrad Grizzle with his first of the season and fullback Omar Smith scored touchdowns. The convert team put two three-pointers through the up- rights. Kicker Raekwon Grant added six more points. The Dolphins’ defence give up only a handful of first downs. Rookie defensive lineman Mat- thew Williams made a big tackle to force one of the turnovers. Linebacker Leigh Philip and de- fensive end Michael Belcastro were noteworthy by their perfor- mances. Offensive player of the game was Grizzle and defensive player was Williams. DURHAM — The Ajax-Picker- ing Raiders minor peewee ‘AAA’ rep hockey team is ready for the coming season after putting in the necessary hard work at the squad’s training camp. The Raiders host Oshawa and Clarington for exhibition games in early September. Those games will serve as tune-ups for the Ajax-Pickering Raiders ‘AAA’ Early Bird Tournament at the Pickering Recreation Complex and Don Beer Arena from Sept. 16 to 19. In preparation for the season, the Raiders engaged in a week- long training camp recently at the Ajax Community Centre. The sessions went from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily and includ- ed two-a-day practice sessions, which focused on conditioning and tactical strategies. Over the summer the players had a per- sonal conditioning program and came to camp in excellent shape resulting in a very productive week, according to coach Steve Horner. In between practice sessions the players held several meet- ings, along with fun sessions of football, soccer and road hockey. Team members are Robbie Af- fleck, Khalid Alli, Jake Bannister, Jake Buckler, Steven Deeg, Joe Doherty, Alex Fortin, Christian Kirk, Andrew Henderson, Bran- don LaBumbard, Jacob Lessard, Kristoff Lyons, Jordan Minos, Eric Mitchell, Connor Wilkinson and Adam Valadao. Horner, Tony Visca and Jamie Hertzman coach the team.
