Average folks with big ideas also took part in a public meeting to ad- dress a bill on energy production reform. The purpose of Bill 100 is to change the way the industry ap- proaches energy production, creating more competition, greater reliability while reducing debt load and cleaner genera- tion. As well, the bill encourages conservation and efficient use of electricity. A committee put together by the ministry of energy listened to various speakers on Thurs- day, Aug. 26 at Oddfellow & Re- beka Hall in Orono. Suzanne Elston of Courtice spoke as chairwoman of the Durham Nuclear Awareness As- sociation, challenging the com- mittee to broaden its scope when looking at energy prob- lems in the province. "We don't need electricity, we need the services it produces," she said. She pointed to a picture from 'Wired' magazine that was in- cluded in documents she provid- ed to politicians on hand, depict- ing a room full of people on sta- tionary bikes pedalling to gener- ate electricity. "It's not about where we have been, it's where we're going," she said, quoting science fiction writer Gene Roddenberry, who she said was a visionary. Ms. Elston, who also served two terms as an elected public utilities commissioner for the Town of Clarington and has served on the board of directors for Veridian Corporation, where she was chairwoman of the envi- ronmental committee, pressed forward with less conventional concepts for the committee to consider. "Instead of paying for electric water heaters, let's pay for solar water heaters on our electricity bill," she said, adding she is not impressed with the performance of nuclear generation in the province. Ministry's special-ed clawback angers board members By Mike Ruta Staff Writer DURHAM –The Education Min- istry has short-changed Durham students about $1.5 million in special-education funding, say public school board trustees. The Durham District School Board approved its $493.7 million budget at a special meeting Tuesday night. But it required $1.5 million in special education (SE) reserve funds after the Province failed to deliver $2.8 million in expected funding. In- stead, the board received rough- ly $1.3 million from the Province. The board had been counting on the $2.8 million windfall and has spent a year on a SE review to determine how best to use the money. "It stinks," Marilyn Crawford said after the meeting. The Ajax Wards 1 and 2 trustee and education finance committee chairwoman doesn't think the board can get the money back, even though the Province has created a new, $50 million effectiveness and equity fund for the coming school year to address unmet, SE needs. But, Trustee Crawford noted the recent tone from Education Min- ister Gerard Kennedy has been, 'we're spending too much on spe- Glenn Healy Customer Appreciation Day Win a $2,500 Vacation Voucher meet former Maple Leaf FREE BBQ • REFRESHMENTS • FACE PAINTING * Some conditions apply. "If we predict renew- able energy is a sustain- able industry, then that's what we'll get," she said. "Nuclear energy is not sustainable. To date, there's no solution for high-level waste. We're creating a legacy for the future. I'm a mom with three kids and I want them to grow up in the same world with the same opportunities I had as a kid." Port Hope resident Alexandra McKee-Ben- nett, a registered nurse for 24 years, spoke out about the future of chil- dren when exposed to en- vironmental hazards she said may be the product of current energy produc- tion practices. "In the last five years, asthma rates have gone up 35 per cent," she said. "It's an increased cost to our health system and there's an increased cost for drugs and in emer- gency rooms. I'm very pleased coal is being phased out." Ms. McKee-Bennett re- quested that the commit- tee phase out nuclear and coal generation and make renewable energy produc- tion a priority. There is still time for the committee to collect information from the public. Donald Williams and his lawyer, Dragi Zekavica, told a hearings officer the prosecutor's former association with Durham Chief Kevin McAlpine might constitute a conflict, es- pecially since they plan to call the chief as a witness during the trial. They say Ray Vandervelde, an Inspector with Peterborough Police, worked with Chief McAlpine when he led the Peter- borough force. "My under- standing is In- spector Vander- velde worked under Chief McAlpine while at the Peterbor- ough office," Mr. Zekavica said during the brief hearing, held at a police office in Whitby. "One of the major witnesses that will be called on behalf of Mr. Williams is, in fact, Chief McAlpine. "The question is going to be one of conflict because of the prior relationship." The hearings officer, retired OPP Inspector Greg Connolley, asked for a formal written mo- tion from Mr. Williams and his lawyer before he makes a deci- sion on the prosecutor's status. Bill MacKenzie, the lawyer representing Durham Regional Police Sergeant Jim Griepsma, said he has no objection to Insp. Vandervelde continuing as the prosecutor when the tribunal begins hearing evidence. "I simply can't understand how a witness called on behalf of a complainant could create any conflict with regard to the pros- ecution," Mr. MacKenzie said. Wednesday morning's brief hearing was held to cover ad- ministrative matters before the trial begins in earnest. The tri- bunal has been called to hear evidence on a complaint against Sgt. Griepsma, originally filed several years ago by Mr. Williams. Mr. Williams was charged with sexual assault in 1994; the charge was stayed in 1996. He al- leges that, in the fall of 1994, he attended a polygraph interview conducted by Sgt. Griepsma. Mr. Williams alleges Sgt. Grieps- ma tampered with evidence by altering a videotape of that ses- sion. The tape is missing more than two and a half minutes of dialogue, Mr. Williams contends. Sgt. Griepsma has denied tampering with the tape, and a series of internal investigations by Durham Regional Police brass have found no evidence of misconduct. The tribunal now under way was ordered by the Ontario Civilian Commission on Police Services (OCCOPS) after Mr. Williams appealed Chief McAlpine's decision that the complaint could not be substan- tiated. During Wednesday's session, Mr. MacKenzie indicated Sgt. Griepsma's desire to get on with the hearing. He said the veteran cop is entitled to an expeditious hearing. Mr. Williams and his lawyer indicated they intend to call a number of witnesses from the Durham Regional Police ranks, including the chief. Mr. Zekavica acknowledged the chief would be "a hostile witness." The tribunal is scheduled to begin Nov. 2. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, August 29, 2004 PAGE 3 A/P pickeringtowncentre.com ison Zameena from Pickering THE FOOD COURT IS OPEN DURING RENOVATIONS Lunch Us! More needed to be accomplshed, Crawford says DURHAM –Public school board trustees should have worked harder on the budget, says Paul Crawford. The Durham District School Board approved its 2004/05 bud- get Tuesday night. The vote was 10-0 in favour, with one absten- tion, the Pickering trustee. Trustee Crawford voted against the budget at the educa- tion finance committee level ear- lier in the evening - the only trustee to nix it. "I wanted to spend more time on it," he said in an interview. "I tried to get us to carry on after (the end of the school year)." He favoured July meetings to go over the budget line by line, but said there wasn't trustee sup- port for the idea. Trustee Craw- ford noted while staff prepares the budget, "it's our signature that goes on it in the long run. "We really need to reach into it to see if anything can be moved around." However, Marilyn Crawford, the Ajax Wards 1 and 2 trustee and education finance committee chairwoman, said Trustee Craw- ford had his chance to delve into the budget earlier. There was a prior meeting of some of the board's newer trustees who had a lot of questions about the budget and met with business superin- tendent Ed Hodgins. Trustee Marilyn Crawford says the board's more seasoned trustees responded, "'I've been through this so many times; I'm not interested'. "Out of the blue, Paul wanted to do this in July," she says. Trustee Marilyn Crawford says she was not aware of any other trustee who wanted to meet in July. Trustee Susan Shetler says she also favoured more meetings, noting "it's kind of difficult in the summer though." "We did prove that we were owed that money before," she said to trustees. "This govern- ment is not honouring that. I don't have a lot of trust in this guy." In June 2003, at the behest of the then-Tory government, the board estimated the number of new SE funding claims for the coming school year at 150. But the actu- al figure was 424, and ministry auditors re- viewed and approved the claims, worth $2.8 million. The board's SE re- serve held about $2.3 million, but that total will drop to between $300,000 and $600,000, says Don McLean, the board's SE superintendent. "In hindsight, I think what we should have done is probably use (the reserve) sooner," board chairman Elizabeth Roy said in an interview. "I'm not very optimistic that we will receive our fair share. We won't get what we lost, for sure." Mr. McLean has higher hopes. He told trustees with the SE re- view basically finished, and the ministry requiring boards to pre- sent a plan in order to access the new fund, the board is ahead of the game and can simply submit its review. "Our hope is that all of the work we've done for the past year... will benefit us in terms of applying for our share of the eq- uity and effectiveness fund," he says. The board has to wait to hear from the government how and when it can apply for a chunk of the money. If the rules aren't re- leased until November, for exam- ple, Mr. McLean says it will delay the release of the board's SE plan. The ministry claw- back means "there will be implications... in terms of the recommendations we will be able to make" to trustees concerning the special-education pro- gram. "Naturally, I'm disap- pointed," said Laurie Beaton, the board's spe- cial education advisory committee chairwoman. "We have a demonstrated need and it was proven by a government audit, it wasn't proven by an audit within the board." She says the government let Durham down. "The reality is the ministry of education changed the rules halfway through the game," said Oshawa Trustee Michael Bar- rett. In the coming year's budget, 46 casual educational assistant as- signments have not been re- newed. Yet the EA complement is expected to rise by 62 posi- tions, for a total of 785 in the sys- tem. Despite the drop in casual EAs, Mr. McLean says "I think we'll still be able to provide those high-quality programs and ser- vices." Some local SE advocates had urged the board not to cut posi- tions and to use up reserves. Proven need Pickering Trustee cool on board’s budget MARILYN CRAWFORD Proved ‘we were owed that money before.’ ✦ Proven from page 1 DURHAM –At first, one com- muter thought it was a cloud of smoke rising above the Hwy. 401 weigh station in Whitby yesterday morning. The night before, spec- tators were forced from a Bow- manville soccer field. Both incidents were caused by what are believed to be massive swarms of flying ants. "There are a couple of spots that I know of in the Whitby area," says Jason Ford, a Lloyd Pest Control Services Ltd. technician. "It happens a couple of times a year when you have swarms of re- productive males and females breaking away from a mature colony to start a colony." Although Mr. Ford hasn't seen them himself this year, he's cer- tain the recent swarms are made up of flying ants, the same insects he saw in his own Courtice neigh- bourhood a year ago. He assures the phenomenon "is a natural thing. "It usually lasts just a couple of days," he said. Steve Payne, a spokesman for the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources agrees that "in all like- lihood, what people are seeing are flying ants." He adds that with the right weather conditions at the right time, swarms can be seen, but only for a couple of days. "They're looking for a new home, essentially," says Mr. Payne. Mr. Ford's firm was called to Lakeridge Health Whitby this week when insects were detected on the roof of the hospital. "In a couple of days, they've landed and it's over," he adds. "If someone does have a problem, an insecticide with the picture of an ant on the label can be sprayed directly at them." www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, August 29, 2004 PAGE 5 A/P For more information, contact Durham Region Works Department 1-800-667-5671 or 905-579-5264 recycling@region.durham.on.ca Don’t forget your Blue Box! And thanks. For Pickering's Perdita Felicien, of course, just getting to the Olympics was no longer a big achievement after she claimed the world hurdles title in Paris last year. For her, the new goal was to claim a medal, preferably gold, at Athens. That it was not to be merely sets the table for the challenge of Beijing 2008. At 23, Ms. Felicien has many more miles to run before she sleeps. And, she'll likely vault this tough hurdle in her life - the stumble in Greece - with grace and the determination to be No. 1 in four years. For Andy Stewart of Oshawa and Chris Begg of Uxbridge, a medal was so close and yet so far. The catcher-DH and relief pitcher battled with their baseball teammates and came up a few feet short on a warning track shot against Cuba. They did us proud. For sailor Bernard Luttmer of Pickering, track ath- letes Anson Henry of Pickering and Priscilla Lopes of Whitby and equestrian Ian Roberts of Port Perry, these Olympics pro- vided a chance to compete at the world level. Mr. Henry had his chance to shine as a member of our men's 4-x-100 metre relay team this weekend. The pressure to measure up against the world's very best is a challenge our Olympians take on and deal with. How many of us could even conceive ourselves in the category of world's best? How many of us would rise to that tremendous challenge and shine? Just think about how much effort these great athletes have put into getting to Athens. What these Olympics prove is if we want our best to be the world's best, we have to do a better job of supporting them. We can't sit back every two years and complain at the results we achieve compared with other nations. If we want our athletes to stand on the podium and if we want 'O Canada' to play more than a few times each Games, we have to make a commitment to our athletes. More money is needed and our federal govern- ment should commit the resources that will let our athletes compete with the very best. Congratulations to all our Durham Olympians. We're very proud of your desire and commitment. You are a credit to us all. Quick-thinking teens true heroes To the editor: I would like to share with you the re- sponsible, life-saving actions of some teens from Pickering who are true he- roes. Recently, my daughter went to a friend's cottage with nine other friends. After two days of having fun enjoying the great outdoors, my daughter suddenly became ill. Although her friends didn't know what was wrong, they took time to care for her. Her condition worsened and on the way home her friends were re- sponsible enough to realize she needed help. Rather than continuing home, which was only 30 minutes away, they stopped at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville. There they found she was suffering from dia- betic ketoacidosis. Our daughter has Type 1 diabetes and after being in the sun all day and not eating or drinking sufficiently, she had become severely de- hydrated and was in grave danger. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, my daughter's condition grew critical and she required resuscitation. It was late at night and continuing home would have been the easier thing to do. My daughter, very likely, would have gone straight to bed and we would- n't have known how ill she was. The doc- tors informed us that if she hadn't re- ceived the medical attention when she did, she would have died. By stopping when they did, her friends saved her life. I would like to publicly acknowledge these praiseworthy heroes, all of whom will be entering Grade 12 at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School - Charlie, Jen, Tommy, Laura and Jay, and also Steve, Kevin, Mike and Rob, young peo- ple such as you help dispel the myths about teenagers and irresponsibility. Teachers proving to be the real labour problem I t's a new school year so it must be time for labour strife in our classrooms. After all, job action by teachers these last few years has become almost as common as learning and tests. The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario made it official last week, vowing if there aren't increases to prepa- ration time and significant salary hikes, members will be trotting off the job. If you're a fan of gluttonous cash grabs, the union's strategy is brilliant. Dalton McGuinty has vowed to be remembered as the education premier and the teach- ers see daylight and are running for all they're worth. Union leaders can push as hard as they want and Mr. McGuinty better be accommodating or he won't have anything left to stand on, now that's he's proven his word is good for little and his policies come across like they were drawn up on a napkin over dinner. And no matter what he does decide, the public's going to come out a loser, again. If the premier decides to get tough, we're look- ing at more strife in our schools. For those of you keeping score at home, yes, it was only a year ago that teachers turned off the com- munication channels as they ramped up job action across the Durham District School Board. Report cards were basically ig- nored, parents were denied ac- cess to teachers, trips were can- celled and a whole host of other tactics were employed to put the squeeze on families. On the other hand, if Mr. McGuinty plays pacifist, we will be paying for years to come. Mak- ing the extra prep time available and allowing for bigger than the two-per cent allotted raises will cost the Province significantly. Not only in elementary teacher salaries, but in similar hikes that will be demanded by other educa- tors and public sector employees. Teachers complained long and hard that the labour problems in our schools all these years were with former Premier Mike Harris and Mr. Harris only. Yet, less than a year after Ontario elected a government of a different polit- ical stripe, they're already beat- ing the strike drum. 'Give us what we want or else'. At what point do the teachers start taking a hard look in the mirror and realizing they're the real problem? Tony Doyle's column appears every third Sunday. E-mail tdoyle@durhamregion.com. Back to school and the picket line Editorials &Opinions SUNDAY, AUGUST 29, 2004 ✦ News Advertiser ✦ DAVID STELL, NEWS EDITOR, 905-683-5110 EXT. 249 Editorial Letters to the Editor Tony Doyle m a n a g i n g e d i t o r Alternate energy sources proposed in demonstration By Shelley Jordan Staff Writer DURHAM –An information meeting on a bill that could change Ontario’s electricity sys- tem attracted stakeholders from various industries as well as pro- testors from Greenpeace. Members of Greenpeace stood outside Oddfellow & Rebekah Centre in Orono as MPPs and members of the general public entered the building to share in- formation the Ministry of Ener- gy will consider before taking Bill 100 to the legislature for a second reading. The act propos- es to ensure reliability, competi- tion, cleaner power generation, debt reduction and the promo- tion of economic efficiency. It sets out to encourage conserva- tion and efficient use of electric- ity. Wearing radiation protection suits and carrying a sign that read, ‘Green Power NOT Nu- clear Power,’ Greenpeace mem- bers made their statement against nuclear energy, sur- rounded by mock barrels of ra- dioactive waste. Greenpeace Energy Co-ordi- nator Dave Martin, who once lived in Uxbridge, said he knows Durham Region well, and said Greenpeace’s take on Bill 100 is that it’s not about public or pri- vate ownership, it’s about the way electricity generation af- fects the environment, the ratepayer and the economy. “The bottom line is that nu- clear and coal are expensive, dirty and dangerous,” said Mr. Martin. “We have to build a cheaper, more reliable and safer electricity system.” Mr. Martin said he would like to see coal and nuclear genera- tion phased out in favour of con- servation and renewable energy sources such as hydro, solar, wind and biofuels. While Mr. Martin did not speak during Thursday’s meet- ing, other presentations echoed the stance of Greenpeace demonstrators. Among the other presenters was Chris Coltas, president of Eco-Energy Durham, a non-profit communi- ty based group. “We need local ownership to encourage a wider distribution and more stable power grid,” he said. Mr. Coltas proposed the provincial government make it easier and offer incentives to in- dividuals wanting to create their own wind and solar power and share with the rest of the power grid. Paul Norris, president of the Ontario Waterpower Associa- tion explained to the committee that there is a misconception that Ontario’s hydro opportuni- ties are tapped out. “We have over 190 facilities, and water power can react more quickly to changes in consump- tion than other power generat- ing industries, with 80 to 90 per cent efficiency,” said Mr. Norris, adding that a policy to open up opportunities on crown land would significantly increase the amount of water-based energy in the province. Those at the meeting in sup- port of coal and nuclear gener- ated power expressed the view that both forms could not be sustained forever and would eventually need to be replaced. They also agreed that more nuclear facilities would need to be in place if a transition toward green energy sources were to be created. Al Shpyth, director of Govern- ment Relations for Cameco Cor- poration, the largest supplier of uranium products in the world said energy demand will contin- ue to grow. “We need a safe, secure and di- verse energy supply,” he said. Andrew Miller who spoke on behalf of Ontario Power Genera- tion said they are in support of renewable energy. “We need the lights to stay on and everything around us from the microphone I’m speaking into to the clothes we are all wearing require electricity to create,” he said. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, August 29, 2004 PAGE 7 A/P DURHAM COLLEGE CONTINUING EDUCATION YOUR TOMORROW STARTS HERE Certificates •Accounting Specialty •Educational Assistant •French Proficiency •Home Inspector •Teaching and Training Adults •Microsoft Software •Website Creation and Design Diplomas •Accounting •Early Childhood Education •Human Resources •Police Foundations Graduate Certificates •Case Management for Health Care •Dementia Studies •Public and Private Investigations •School Age Care Programming Associations •Canadian Institute of Management (CIM) •Canadian Payroll Association (CPA) •Certified General Accountants (CGA) •Ontario Management Development Program (OMDP) •Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario (RIBO) Learn Online Whatever your goal….think distance education. By design Education for our children needs to accommodate a child’s thirst for understanding while developing underlying individual cognitive capacity. This combination can be challenging because we each have a unique style for learning. While our brains are technically physically similar, the way we each shape the growth of neuron-based connections (our dendrites) determines what pathways-of-understanding and competencies we build. Hence, in each of us there are natural strengths and weaknesses. Both strengths and weaknesses need to be directly attended-to during the education process with strengths developed further and weaknesses corrected. The basis of this approach is an understanding of the human brain, its functions and, its dysfunctions. The unique school setting of Wasdell Centre for Innovative Learning provides accommodation to both sets of needs. Wasdell Centre offers two Schools, each independent of the other yet with the option for crossing over students as the need requires: First, The Arrowsmith Program provides direct intervention to correct learning differences (often referred to as dysfunctions). Second, our International Academy of Arts & Science provides an alternative main stream program for those wanting a bilingual world class education. Our Int’l Academy provides a unique opportunity for children and families who want access to a bilingual education with an inter- national quality. (We are making application to receive certification by the International Baccalaureate Organization). With an International Baccalaureate Diploma a student has access to any university in the world and will be given preferred consideration when registering. Students will receive advanced standing from these universities which means savings in time and money towards achieving academ- ic goals. Why? A school certified with The International Baccalaureate Organization has been deemed to provide World Class quality educa- tion that focuses on building inter- disciplinary critical thinking, syn- thesis of thought, world views and personal character balance impor- tant in the holistic development of the individual. Wasdell’s International Academy of Arts & Science is a bilingual private educational insti- tution whose goal is to offer unique instructional and educational set- tings through which students learn and excel in both English and French within a modern and tech- nologically advanced student cen- tered environment. This is a unique private school whose fundamental aim is to provide children with an exceptional well-rounded educa- tion and a truly comprehensive instructional program in English, French, mathematics, sciences, his- tory, geography, computer science, music, arts, drama, physical educa- tion, health, character education, method of study and a third lan- guage. The overall educational processes are geared to allow chil- dren to acquire considerable mas- tery knowledge and to develop strong critical thinking skills and attitudes that will be useful to them and beneficial in their life. Our aim is to nurture the quali- ties of respect for self and for oth- ers, and to cultivate the desire to serve the community. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their thoughts, words and deeds, to act with honour and pur- pose, and to make a difference in the complex global society they have inherited. Wasdell’s International Academy consists of three divi- sions: 1. Kindergarten – age 3 - SK (1/2 or full day) 2. Junior - Grade 1 through Grade 7 (By the end of Grade 7 grade 8 curriculum is completed) 3. Senior - Level 1 through Level 5 (High School) starting 2005 French is introduced during Pre-K, JK, SK; French & English are shared Grades 1 to 5. English is the primary language from grades 6 and above. Supervised homework time can be included within the normal school day. This provides the stu- dent with opportunity to be super- vised by French and English speak- ing teachers. Wasdell’s International Academy/L’Académie Internationale is for any student and their families who are serious about their education. This pro- gram provides the environment, context and content required for individuals to become well round- ed, high functioning successful leaders of our borderless society. Repeated failure to grasp concepts leaves them not only farther behind their peers academically it leaves them vulnerable to feelings of depression, anger and low self-worth. The Arrowsmith Program is a pro- gram unlike most. It digs below the normal remediation process and addresses the underlying causes of learning dysfunction. The program is based on the concept of neuroplasticity -- which is the belief that the brain is elastic, and that through mental exer- cise neural pathways can be stretched and strengthened. This view is supported by brain research conducted by Dr. Alexander Luria who studied Russian soldiers who suffered from war-inflicted brain wounds. He concluded that complex cognitive activities, such as reading, writing and mathematics, require the interaction of several areas of the brain and that each individual brain area has a very specific role to play. If one brain area that is part of a specific learning activity is impaired, the performance of that learning activity will be impaired in a way particular to the contribution of the weaker brain area. This impair- ment is the source of a specific learn- ing dysfunction. Hence dysfunctions are the puzzle pieces that contribute to learning disor- ders. Here are the 19 dysfunctions that the Arrowsmith Program directly addresses: 1) Messy handwriting, misreading, irregular spelling, speech rambling, careless written errors in mathematics, poor written performance. 2) Reversals of ‘b’-’d’; ‘p’-’q’, difficul- ty reading a clock, needing to reread material to comprehend it, problem understanding cause and effect, trouble with mathematical reasoning 3) Trouble remembering oral instruc- tions, difficulty following lectures or extended conversations, problem acquiring information through listen- ing. 4) Difficulty putting information into one’s own words, speaking in incom- plete sentences, difficulty using inter- nal speech to work out consequences, trouble following long sentences, breakdown of steps in mathematical procedures. 5) Mispronouncing words, avoiding using words because of uncertainty of pronunciation, difficulty thinking and talking at the same time, flat and mon- otone speech with lack of rhythm and intonation, limited ability to learn and use phonics. 6) Mishearing words and thus misinter- preting information, difficulty under- standing someone with an accent, extra effort required to listen to speech. 7) Problems with being self-directed and self-organized in learning, limited mental initiative, difficulty keeping attention focused on task to comple- tion, trouble seeing the main point and limited problem solving ability. 8) Poor word recognition, slow reading, difficulty with spelling, trouble remembering symbol patterns such as mathematical or chemical equations. 9) Problems with associative memory, trouble learning how to read due to dif- f iculty associating the word with its sound, trouble following auditory information. 10) Awkward body movements, bump- ing into objects due to not knowing where the body is in space relative to objects, uneven handwriting with vari- able pressure. 11) A lack of clear articulation of speech, some speech slurring. 12) Problem interpreting non-verbal information such as body language, facial expression and voice tone, diffi- culty registering and interpreting one’s ow n emotions, weak social skills. 13) Slow, jerky reading with errors, eyes fatigue when reading, problem navigating in the dark. 14) Trouble finding objects, problem remembering visual cues such as land- marks, difficulty remembering faces and recalling the visual details of pic- tures. 15) Frequently getting lost, losing objects, messy disorganized work- space, trouble constructing geometric f igures 16) Difficulty understanding the mechanical properties of objects, prob- lems constructing or repairing e.g. a bicycle. 17) Trouble understanding the proper sequence of steps in a task such as sewing, cooking or computer program- ming. 18) Poor muscle tone, which results in some degree of awkwardness and slow- ness of body movement. 19) Finger counting, trouble retaining numbers in one’s head, difficulty mak- ing change, problem learning math facts, poor sense of time management. The prescriptive responses to the dysfunctions are different forms of brain-based exercise. In many ways the remediation plan is physiotherapy for the brain. However there is some help and support out there to guide you through your weight-loss journey. The Herbal Magic Clinics in Ajax and Pickering have been helping Whitby residents achieve their weight-loss goals the natural way. Diane Freigh says she has been very successful with her customized weight-loss program. “I’ve been on every imaginable diet out there and could not lose the weight,” she says. “And when I did lose some weight, I would gain it back.” Four months ago she contacted Herbal Magic and start- ed her weight-loss program; she is now only two pounds away from her weight-loss goal of 137 pounds. “I feel great! Absolutely fantastic,” she says. Not only is she pleased with her results but also with the staff at Herbal Magic. “They’re very help- ful,” she says.“They are the best.” She also enjoys the one-on-one contact with the Herbal Magic counsellor and that there is a level of discipline involved with the program. “I come in three days a week, which makes it a lot easier to stick with the program,” she adds. Vivian Bent, another Herbal Magic client says the clinic helped get her life back. “A f ter finding out that I had a under-active thyroid, my struggle with my weight began. Over the years I tried every diet, weight-loss program, pills, shakes and joined various health clubs and gyms,” she says. “But that only resulted in debt, and no results. Then one day she walked into Herbal Magic and everything changed for her. “They took the time to listen to me, which was a real change from the other places I had been to,” she says. “Then they explained to me every detail of their program and how it could suit my per- sonal needs. She too enjoyed the one-on-one contact and felt that the staff was very caring. “Every week when I went to be weighed they would always offer encour- agement and never let me give up on my goal, which helped me stay motivated,” she says. It only took a week for Ms. Bent to start seeing results, and in total she has lost 40 pounds, which she has maintained for the past three months. “I recommend this program to anyone who is concerned about his or her weight and wants to lose any excess pounds because I truly believe that this program can work for anybody,”she says. Ahistory of colorectal cancer among immediate relatives is still believed to be one of the disease's strongest pre- dictors, but recent studies suggest genetics only predis- pose certain individuals to the disease. Many experts now believe environmental conditions and diet define who will ulti- mately develop colon cancer. A number of lifestyle factors, including low intake of folate (a B-complex vitamin) or methionine, smoking and heavy alcohol consumption have been associated with increased risk of developing this disease. A recent study of women with a family history of colon cancer revealed a 50 per cent reduction in risk among those consuming 400 mcg of folate, compared to participants con- suming 200 mcg or less. A 20 per cent reduction was also found in women with no family history of colon cancer. The influence of family history on colon cancer develop- ment was also markedly diminished by use of multivitamins containing folic acid. This is particularly true following a lengthy duration of multivitamin use. Individuals with a fam- ily history of colon cancer who use multivitamins for longer than five years may decrease their risk by as much as 50 per cent. Although folic acid (folate) is found in vegetables, fruit, grain products and meat and meat alternatives,it is difficult to get the entire amount from food. It would require consuming five cups of Romaine lettuce, drinking 33 cups of milk or eat- ing 18 bananas in a single day to meet the daily requirement of 400 mcg of folic acid. In order to maintain optimal health and help meet the daily requirements of folic acid and other important vitamins and nutrients, the use of a multivitamin is recommended. - News Canada Folic acid and multivitamin supplements may help prevent colon cancer TO ADVERTISE IN HEALTH & WELLNESS CALL MARILYN AT 905-683-5110 A/P PAGE 20 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, August 29, 2004 www.durhamregion.com www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, August 29, 2004 PAGE 21 A/P *Expires Sept. 8/04 Excludes products 70 OFF %70 OFF % Before Jennifer lost 51 lbs. and 43 1/2” Before Felicia lost 76 lbs. and 71” Before Karen has lost 125 3/4 lbs. and 101” FULL WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM GUARANTEED WEIGHT LOSS 2-7 LBS. Will the region be able to keep pace with the needs of its residents? Boom town is a 12-part series examining the issues we will confront now and in the near future. Part 8: North versus south Less growth in the north is part of the Region’s plan By Carly Foster Staff Writer DURHAM - Drive north along any of south Dur- ham’s roads and the world suddenly changes. Urban bustle and con- crete melds into tranquil, lush greenspace. Side- walks become wildflower- filled shoulders. There are towering, thick-stumped trees and vast fields. The roads are bumpier, the drivers slower. It’s one of the Region’s hidden gems, this ability to drive 15 minutes from each of the lakeshore mu- nicipalities and hit rural life. It’s quieter and slower here, and residents like it that way. “We have people mov- ing to Brock from the southern municipalities because they want to live where it’s quieter,” said Mayor Keith Shier of Brock Township, Dur- ham’s northernmost mu- nicipality. “We have fresh air and less noise. We’re close enough to the major hub of business and med- ical service that we can be there in an hour and a half. “People do cherish that kind of country liv- ing, that kind of atmo- sphere, the tranquillity and quiet.” With 85 per cent of Durham’s land mass con- sidered rural and strong local and regional official plans to keep it that way, growth here happens at a snail’s pace compared to major urban centres like Whitby, for example. The Town issued 2,370 new residential building permits last year, com- pared to Brock at 23, Scu- gog at 145 and Uxbridge at 265. But slow growth is the way it’s supposed to be in Durham’s three northern municipali- ties. The regional official plan (ROP) is forecast- ing there will be just over 70,000 people there by 2031, a jump of around 20,000 from 2001 popula- tion figures. The ROP also has cer- tain restrictions on sever- ing farmland and creating new lots, as well as poli- cies on the types of uses for rural land, including aggregate pits and golf courses. These are all parts of Durham’s goal to “protect and maintain agricultural land for food production for future generations... maintain the distinction between the character of urban and rural areas and to identify, manage and protect significant features and resources of the natural environ- ment.” “One of the major te- nets of the official plan is the environment first, regardless of where it is,” said Roger Saunders, manager of policy, plan- ning and special studies for the Durham Region planning department. “That being said, the buffer areas and protec- tion areas...may seem to be a little bit more strin- gent in the rural areas than the urban areas.” And while slow is the plan, each municipal- ity still faces challenges when it comes to manag- ing that growth. One of those is servicing the new development. Ux bridge is in the midst of building a new water pollution control plant that will allow for an addi- tional 5,000 people in the urban centre. The Scu- gog plant has one more expansion planned for 2007, which will add 3,000 people to the area. After that, neither plant can be made any bigger because of tough provincial regu- lations surrounding dis- charge into streams. With services stretched to the max, small mu- nicipalities would have to look at using private wells and septic tanks, the mayors say. “I think they’re cer- tainly going to have to look at municipalities like Uxbridge because our sewage (plant). Once it’s built, then what’s going to happen?” said Ux- bridge Mayor Gerri Lynn O’Connor. “They’re going to have to open up some- thing (like private servic- es). The big debate down the road, and I hope I’m not alive to see it, will be the big pipe.” A giant sewage pipe is being laid in York Region to allow for expansion in the northern and east- ern parts of the area. It’ll hook up to the Duffins Creek Water Pollution Control Plant in Picker- ing. Scugog’s servicing chal- lenge is a commercial one. The urban area has more than 800 acres of avail- able employment lands, but none of it is serviced. There’s been great in- terest in the lands, es- pecially with a possible Hwy. 407 expansion and federal airport in Picker- ing, said Scugog Mayor Marilyn Pearce. “But it costs $52,000 to service one acre,” she said. “It would take us 20 years to recoup the cost.” Mayor Pearce is hoping for long-term investment plan help from the Prov- ince. But the Province in many ways hasn’t been all that helpful to the northern municipalities when it comes to growth. The recently approved Greenbelt Protection Plan has placed a one- year moratorium on de- velopment outside urban boundaries, and is look- ing to establish a per- manent greenbelt that would slice right through Durham. On top of that, 50 per cent of Uxbridge is sit- ting on the protected Oak Ridges Moraine. And while that is very good for keeping Durham permanently green, there is a downside, Mayor O’Connor said. “Aft er we’ve grown out...does this become an elitist community be- cause only those with money will be able to live here?” she said. Not only will prices of houses go up, taxes will go up, she said. The slower pace of development Construction workers erect a new home in Uxbridge, where 265 residential building permits were issued last year. Slow growth is the plan in Durham Region’s northern municipalities. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, August 29, 2004 PAGE 23 A/P Sports SUNDAY, August 29, 2004 ✦ News Advertiser ✦ AL RIVETT, SPORTS EDITOR 905-683-5110 EXT. 250 They score Check out the standings... After scorching North York in the season’s opening weekend, the Dolphins atoms blew out the Etobicoke Eagles 44-0 to run their record to 2-0, while the pee- wees handled the Eagles 52-0. A balanced scoring attack was the key in the atom game, along with a strong defensive effort. Quarterback Mikhael Cadiz rushed for one touchdown and passed for another, while Tyler Grayer carried the ball for more than 100 yards and three ma- jors. Dillon Campbell and Delino Smith had good days kicking converts. Also contributing offensive- ly were Kareem Tucker, Cole Tudor, Keldyn Ahlstedt, Dillon Campbell, Sandy Scotland, and David Wilson, and the line, which included Brian Derksen, Devin Elms, Jacob Flores, Hayden Allen, Nathan Cheung, Erick Ko, Tyler Davies, Justin Smith and Donnelle Munda. The defence was led by George Tourloukis and Shane Lock, both of whom recorded interceptions, while Brandon Misseri, Dexter Damboise and Jelane Roberts each recorded sacks, with Rob- erts scooping up a fumble and running 60 yards for a touch- down. Also turning in solid games were Rob Sinclair, Adrian Williamson, Andy Horodynk and Dustin Kaupp. The peewees scored on their first four possessions to run up a 30-0 halftime lead. Starting quarterback Andrew Lim threw three first-quarter touchdown passes, to Kyle Goffe, Jed Reid and Brendan Wood, re- spectively. Rookie pivot Tosh Miller Fran- cis led the team on touchdown drives that resulted in majors from David Delgado and Clayton Robichaud. David McIlravey ran the offence in the fourth quarter, which saw him score on a keeper and Goffe get his second major. The offensive, defensive and special teams units were all solid through the contest. In fact, the Eagles failed to register a first down. The Dolphins kicked the sea- son off by sweeping North York on Aug. 29. The atoms blitzed the Griz- zlies 60-12. Scoring touchdowns were Smith and Grayer, with two, Scotland, Tudor, Damboise, and Alyx McMillan. Damboise recov- ered two fumbles and Tristan Lagda had one. The peewees dropped North Yo rk 47-6 behind Delgado’s three touchdowns. Also scoring were Jordan McLaughlin, Brendan Wood and Miller Francis. Kickers Alexander Ko and McLaughlin amassed 11 points. In the tyke contest, the defend- ing champion Dolphins shut out North York 24-0. Touchdowns came from Mi- chael Stobbart, with two, and Omar Smith. Kicker Kevin Dubra added two, three point plays. De- fensively, Nathanial Vaikla had a sack. No score was reported from the tykes’ tangle with the Eagles. The Dolphins are on the road today (Sunday) in Markham to face the York Region Raiders. Pickering boys f ind second effort pays off PICKERING – Hard work paid off in spades for the Pickering under- eight boys’ soccer team at a recent tournament in Darlington. Putting in hours of practice after forming the team two months ago, the Pickering boys had a break- through in Darlington, taking second place at the competitive event. The Pickering boys dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision to New- market in the championship game. The loss was a victory of sorts for Pickering as they had lost to the same Newmarket squad 6-1 in the final of the Newmarket tournament, Pickering’s first event, earlier in the season. Pickering’s lone goal of the final was the result of a well-executed cross from Jacob Ricci to Andrea Lamanna. Ricci was named the tourna- ment’s most valuable player. Af ter knocking off Whitby Blue in the first game of the Darlington event (no score was reported), the Picker- ing boys dominated the Whitby Gold squad 4-0. Goalkeeper Marcus Si- mons earned the shutout. They also defeated the Oshawa Kicks in Game 3 (no score reported) to move into the final. Andrea Lamanna, Ricci, Justin Mendes, Jack Cats and Mattieu Mof- fit-Lily led the offence throughout the tourney. Other team members are Dayne St. Clair, Michael Avarino, Cody Dale, Ricky Nater, Dakota Parsons, Jeremy Kulchyk and Matthew Mulgrew. Luis Mendes, Michael Simons and Wayne St. Clair coach the team. Sting strikes gold AJAX – The Sting defeated the Eagles in two straight games to walk away winners of the Ajax Summer Hockey League season. The Sting captured the tyke level gold medal by defeating the Eagles 7-3 and 4-0 in the final games. In the championship game the Eagles could not score on Connor McCollum, despite a strong effort. Neither team had scored head- ing into the second period but Ryan Sarris, the team’s points’ leader, got the ball rolling. Noah Robins took over from there with a hat trick. Assists came from Curtis Smith, Christopher Dever, Craig Henning and two from Mathew D’Souza. Scott Henning provided great defence, while forwards Julia Rolling, Kristen Koerth, Calum Slapincar and Noah Vandervinne all played great. The Sting finished the summer season with a record of eight wins, four losses and one tie and out- scored its opposition 70-58. Pickering boys boot American foes Under-16 soccer club clinches title with 4-1 win PICKERING – The Pickering Soccer Club under-16 boys re- gional team was champion at a tournament in the United States recently. The Pickering Fusion won its division at the USA Cup Tourna- ment in Blaine, Minnesota. In the final game Pickering triumphed against the St. Paul Blackhawks with a final score of 4-1. Goalie Matt Dinunno gave up only three goals throughout the tournament. The team moved into the final with a nail-biting semifinal game that Pickering tied in the last seconds of regulation time. In overtime Pickering beat the Da- kota REV 2-1. Pickering won its quarter-final game against the SBLSC 2-1. Pickering played tough right from the start winning its first game 6-0 over the IGHSA Heat, followed by a 1-0 victory over Wright County and a 1-0 win over Blaine United. Defenders Dieter Wald, Kevin Kobold, Mike Broaderip, A.J. Oreen and Shane Boyd played well in very hot weather. David James, Scott Rampadarat, Kevin Campbell, Joshua Reece and David Harris played midfield with forwards Leighton Parker, Chris Neary and Marc Affolter rounding out the team. Injured defender Chris Parker cheered from the sidelines. Matt Dinunno Sr. and John Harris coach the team. The Pickering Soccer Club's under-16 boys club returned from Minnesota re- cently with a USA Cup title after running off a number of victories.
