HomeMy WebLinkAboutNA2004_08_25By Peter Robinson Special to the News Advertiser ATHENS –Perdita Felicien’s golden dream turned to a nightmare last night as she crashed out of the women’s 100-metre hurdles after fail- ing to clear the first hurdle. “I’m devastated. I feel like I’ve let so many people down,” said Felicien. “I just wish that I could have (it all over).” Felicien appeared to be caught flat- footed out of the blocks on a quick starter’s gun. She stood upright far earlier than her usual form, reaching toward the first hur- dle, and hitting it square with her lead foot. Her momentum carried her forward, but she failed to right herself. Instead, she slumped to the track, spinning to the right and taking out Russian Irina Shevchenko in the process. “This is so devastating. It’s just so hard to swallow,” she said. Renaldo Nehemiah, a former world record holder in the men’s 110m hur- dles, who is also Felicien’s agent, said the race went from bad to worse right from the starter’s gun. “If you watch the television replay, she is out of her rhythm,” said Ne- hemiah. “She got out of the blocks and stood straight up. When you do that your rhythm goes off. Once your rhythm is off, you reach, and when you reach like that...” Nehemiah didn’t need to finish his sentence. The answer was painfully easy to see for all of Felicien’s home- town, home country, and the stadium in Athens. Durham Regional Police officers working with the canine unit tracked down the two shortly after the frightened senior called police to report two men were ransacking her Rosebank Road house, said Sergeant Paul Malik. The drama began around 2:50 a.m. Sunday, when the woman, 80, awoke to noises in her house, Sgt. Malik said. She became more alarmed as she heard someone ap- proaching her bedroom. A man wearing a hooded sweat- shirt entered the woman’s bedroom and pushed her to the floor, Sgt. Malik said. the woman sustained a wrist injury, but was able to call po- lice when she was left alone as other rooms were ransacked. Police responded and set up a perimeter in the neighbourhood, in the Rosebank neighbourhood south of the 401. Two suspects, who ap- parently had left the house through a back door, were captured on near- by Dunn Avenue after a short foot pursuit, police said. Board plays waiting game Minister’s comments push back approval of building plan By Mike Ruta Staff Writer DURHAM – The second part of the public school board’s building plan is on hold as the Province reviews how it funds new schools and re- pairs. Durham District School Board trustees were slated to receive staff recommendations for Phase 2 of the accommodation plan, cover- ing 2006-08 capital projects, in a month or so and approve it by the end of the calendar year. However Education Minister Gerard Kennedy, in an interview in Whitby last week, says he has big plans in the area of school building and renewal - plans that will derail the board’s timing. Mr. Kennedy says the funding of new schools and upgrades to older ones has to be part of the same big pic- ture, since the government doesn’t want to fund fixes to schools that boards are plan- ning to close. “We need to look at all of our needs on a long- term basis,” he said. “The government has made a significant commitment. We’re going to pull together a significant number of policies this fall.” The commitment is the $2.1 bil- lion worth of crucial major repairs and renovations to Ontario schools Mr. Kennedy announced three months ago. Mr. Kennedy says the government is “going to have that long conversation with the boards and the education community so that everyone can plan for next year.” L ast December, before the board approved Phase 1 of the plan, Mr. Kennedy asked that no schools be closed in Ontario until after September. The board would have closed schools if that request had not been made, and several trustees grumbled that the minis- ter had tied their hands, limiting the board’s ability to press ahead with new projects. It appears a similar thing is happening in Phase 2. Board chairwoman Elizabeth Roy says “there will be a delay,” but couldn’t say when Phase 2 might be approved. She says it wouldn’t make sense to present a plan that will likely be affected by a subsequent ministry announce- ment and even policy changes. “My own thought is I think we’re going to end up (approving it) in the spring of 2005,” she says. Trustee Roy and other board members met with Mr. Kennedy last week after he spoke with Durham teachers receiving gov- ernment numeracy training. She says the minister noted that given Durham is one of the few growing boards in the province, it should benefit in terms of accommoda- [Index ] Editorial Page, 6 Entertainment, 8 Sports, 10 Classified, 13 [Give us a call ] General: 905-683-5110 Distribution: 905-683-5117 General fax: 905-683-7363 Newsroom fax: 905-683-0386 ✦See Felicien page 2✦See Small page 4 Hans Deryk/Toronto Star photo Pickering’s Perdita Felicien throws one of her shoes shortly after falling on the first hurdle in the final of the Olympic women’s 100- metre hurdles event yesterday in Athens. She vowed to come back strong for the 2008 Olympic games. ‘Devastating’ Felicien’s Olympic dream falls ELIZABETH ROY Thinks spring 2005 looks likely. ✦See Robbery page 4 By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING –With her daughter Perdita Felicien on the other side of the world, all Cathy Moe could offer her were words of comfort through a speakerphone in her crowded kitchen. “Don’t worry darling, we’re proud of you darling,” Ms. Moe said, trying to console her crying daughter. Ms. Felicien called her mother’s Pickering townhouse about 20 min- utes after her dreams of an Olympic medal were dashed when she fell while trying to clear her first hurdle in the women’s 100-metre final yester- day. Ms. Moe told her daughter not to cry and how proud everyone was of her. Just over a year ago, Ms. Felicien was a relative unknown, but that changed when she won the world championship in Paris last August. She went into yesterday’s race a heavy favourite to win the gold since many of her main competitors hadn’t made it into the finals. Mo re than a dozen friends and fam- ily members crowded into Ms. Moe’s living room to watch the event live from Athens. “Thanks for supporting me. Thanks to everybody for coming out today,” Ms. Felicien said over the phone through tears. “I love you.” The phone call was short, but it was long enough for Ms. Moe to feel what her daughter was going through. “I never heard her cry like this, she’s really in pain right now,” she said. “I wish I was there to hold her. I love her so much.” Everyone gathered to watch what was expected to be the performance of a lifetime felt the same way. Hilda Moe, Ms. Felicien’s 16-year- old sister, tried to smile through tears as the supporters clapped and said how proud they were of Ms. Felicien. With the initial shock wearing off, Hilda had this message for her older sister. “I would just let her know that I miss her so much... She did take a hard fall. It was heartbreaking watch- ing,” she said. “Whenever she goes through pain, I always go through it too.” Before the race her family appeared excited and happy - as well as a bit nervous. Ms. Felicien’s brother Sam Felicien sat holding his six-week-old son Keenan on a small couch directly across from the television. Next to him was Hilda, while their mother sat on the end. Seconds later Mr. Felicien was standing in disbelief. Later he sat with his head in his hands. Hilda sat close to her mom, the tears welling in her eyes. “It’s OK,” Ms. Moe said smiling. “It’s not over until it is over. In the year 2008 she’ll be stronger and she’ll be able to focus more and bring home the gold,” she told a room full of re- porters. Ms. Felicien’s mother, her sister and friends all felt the same way, “we still love you,” they all said. “It’s sad to sit there and watch your daughter go down,” Ms. Moe said. “She’s still a champion no matter what. She is still Perdita.” The race was won by American Joanna Hayes, who clipped the Olympic record by .01 in a time of 12.37. Canadian Angela Whyte was sixth. It should be noted that the winning time posted by Hayes was .09 under Felicien’s personal best, meaning it would have taken a Herculean effort on her part to win even had she cleared the first hurdle. Felicien lay on the track for a few moments before collecting herself and walking toward the end of the track. As Hayes took off around the track in celebration, Felicien slammed down her bright red spikes and slowly made her way out to the finish area. Once there, Felicien spent almost 20 minutes after the race being con- soled in the arms of Charmaine Crooks, the former Canadian middle distance runner and a current mem- ber of the International Olympic Committee. Felicien was sobbing un- controllably in the arms of Crooks, who could be seen wiping away tears as well. Former Olympic sprint king Donovan Bailey, currently working as an analyst for CBC, stood by trying to comfort Felicien as well. At one point, Crooks could be seen making a call on her cellphone and handing the phone to Felicien. A few minutes later, after she had spoken with her mother, Cathy Moe, back in Pickering, Felicien said she found the experience uplifting. “I thought my mom would be so down,” said Felicien. “But she was so good, and so uplifting with me. It made me feel so much better.” To her credit, Felicien didn’t deflect any responsibility, nor did she make excuses. Instead she took it all on her broad shoulders. “I think the next two weeks will be the hardest, and four years is an eter- nity in this sport, but I’m going to be there,” she said in reference to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. The DNF capped a week where it was expected Felicien would be crowned hurdling queen here, giving Canada a badly needed dose of good fortune in Athens. “Had you told me this was going to happen, of course I would still com- pete,” she said. “It’s just so hard to take, but it’s all part of it.” Felicien would do it all over again A/P PAGE 2 NEWS ADVERTISER,WEDNESDAY EDITION, August 25, 2004 www.durhamregion.com Tropical Escape Bridgetown to Puerto Caldera Caribbean and Panama Canal Cruise 12-Day Voyage Aboard Insignia Sail Date: November 23, 2004 From $1,700 USD Includes Air from Toronto! Eastern Power Limited is currently planning to enhance its operation at the Brock West Power Plant through development of The Brock West Wind Park Project. This project involves the design, construction and operation of a “wind farm” consisting of 5 or 6 wind driven generators with total capacity of about 8 megawatts to be situated on the Brock West Landfill Site. Each generator will sit atop a tubular steel tower about 80 meters high, and have 3 blades of about 40 meters length. Wind turbines of the size and design to be used at Brock West have been used extensively around the world. The closest example of this type of turbine is the one located at the Pickering Nuclear Station. Eastern Power Limited is in the business of designing, developing, and operating electrical power generation projects involving alternative energy. Eastern Power is the owner and operator of two green power plants: the Brock West Power Plant in Pickering, Ontario, and the Keele Valley Power Plant in Vaughan, Ontario, both of which are fuelled by landfill gas. The Brock West Landfill Site, owned by the City of Toronto, covers about 54 hectares of land in the City of Pickering, and has been closed to waste tipping since December 1996. Eastern Po wer’s Brock West Power Plant has been generating electricity form the landfill gas produced by the site’s 18 million tonnes of municipal solid waste since 1991. This green power project is being developed in response to the Government of Ontario’s call for new renewable energy supply as part of its plan to provide for adequate electricity supply while phasing out all coal-fired plants. This project is subject to the Ontario Ministry of the Environment’s Environmental Screening Process for electricity projects. Samples from the pools collected in Pickering and Uxbridge Aug. 11 were sent to Brock University for testing. In a press release Aug. 23, Ross MacEachern, manager of environ- mental health for the Durham Re- gion Health Department stated the mosquito pools are the first detected in the region this year. “This makes us one of seven On- tario public health units reporting West Nile virus-positive mosquito pools,” stated Mr. MacEachern. “Cur- rently, all but one health unit in the province has reported dead birds that have tested positive for the virus.” Mr. MacEachern went on to say the findings mean West Nile activity is high in the Region and the risk to hu- mans has increased. Therefore, the health department is requesting that everyone take precautions to reduce the risk of being bitten by mosqui- toes. The health department started conducting a larvicide program in mid May to reduce the help control the mosquito population. In June, a mosquito trapping program was launched at various locations throughout the region to identify, count and test the blood-sucking in- sects for the virus. To date, the health department has trapped over 12,000 mosquitoes for 2004 research. West Nile testing has been con- ducted on 60 birds since May, and the results indicate viral activity is wide- spread. The health department will no longer submit dead birds for test- ing, but request the public report sightings of dead birds online by ac- cessing the West Nile virus Web site at www.region.durham.on.ca. However, much in the way of de- tail is still to come, says Trustee Roy. For example, she says the board must give one year’s notice if it is closing a school and doesn’t know if that will change or not. Another question mark is how the ministry defines and treats small and rural schools. Closing schools in Phase 2 could be difficult, given Mr. Kennedy’s oft-stated support for them, re- peated last week. “Small schools shouldn’t be on the same economic platform; it isn’t fair,” he told Durham teach- ers. “We believe that there’s a need to recognize every rural school on its own platform.” Under the current capital fund- ing formula, boards have had to close schools, often smaller ones with lower enrolments, in order to put themselves in a pupil-place deficit to receive funding for new pupil places. Mr. Kennedy criticized that ap- proach, saying it has taken a big toll. “We’ve lost some of the best schools in the province,” he says, describing the methodology as “funny economics. They close a school to open a school. It doesn’t make sense.” With those remarks, Oshawa Trustee Kathleen Hopper says pressing ahead with Phase 2 might not be wise. “If he’s alluding to the fact that there could be special rules that will be... different, I think the board could pause and give thought to waiting,” she says. “We followed their original direc- tion and held off and now there’s a new timeline.” Small schools shouldn’t be on same economic platform: Kennedy A.J. Groen/ News Advertiser photo Dance for a treasured friend PICKERING –It was a night to remember last week, as friends of Jonathan Stewart gathered at his parents’ home to celebrate his life. The 17-year-old died in a soccer game recently, after being struck in the chest by a soccer ball. The group was dancing to the Backstreet Boys song ‘Get Down.’ Pickering pool tests positive for virus ✦ Small from page 1 Couple back in court three months after controversial sentence DURHAM –Two former Blackstock residents sentenced to spend a max- imum of nine months in jail for abus- ing their adopted sons for more than 13 y ears will appear before the On- tario Court of Appeal in October. The accused, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, were issued concurrent nine-month sentences by Ontario Justice Donald Halikowski on July 5 after they pleaded guilty in January to caging, beating and tethering their adopted sons. However, the sentence issued by Justice Halikowski received immedi- ate backlash from members of the public and others, including the Durham Children’s Aid Society. Durham Region Crown Attorney John Scott later recommended the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General consider an appeal of the sentence. In late July, the Province an- nounced that it would appeal the sentence and, on Monday, a meeting was held in Toronto where those in- volved in the case selected Oct. 15 for a hearing before the Ontario Court of Appeal at Osgoode Hall in downtown Toronto. Officials with the appellant court noted the hearing is expected to begin at 10:30 a.m. and last about two hours. No other times have been set aside for the hearing. Both Mr. Smith, 52, and his wife, 42, pleaded guilty earlier this year to three counts of forcible confinement, three counts of assault with a weapon and three counts of failing to provide the necessaries of life. Under Justice Halikowski’s ruling, the pair was ordered to serve con- current nine-month sentences for the assault and confinement charges. They will also serve a con- current one-month sentence for fail- ing to provide the necessaries of life for offering the boys no water while they kept them tethered or caged and for having no smoke alarm in their room. Upon their release from a provin- cial prison, the couple will also be on probation for three years. Under that order, the couple cannot have any association with their adopted sons, now aged 17 and 18, unless ap- proved by the court; they are prohib- ited from associating with any youths under the age of 16 unless they attain parental or guardian permission; and they must undergo counselling. The boys were removed from their Blackstock-area home on June 29, 2001 and, a few days later, Mr. and Mrs. Smith were arrested. During the sentencing hearing, which took place throughout early summer, Soula Olver, the assistant Crown attorney, asked Justice Ha- likowski to consider a six- to eight- year sentence for Mrs. Smith and a three- to five-year term for her hus- band. The defence countered with a request for a 12- to 15-month condi- tional sentence for Mrs. Smith and a six-month conditional sentence for Mr. Smith. Under current laws, Mr. and Mrs. Smith will be eligible for parole after serving two-thirds (six months) of their sentence. They also received a credit of 20 days for the 10 days they spent in custody after their initial ar- rest. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER,WEDNESDAY EDITION, August 25, 2004 PAGE 5 P Why lose sleep over home heating rates? Officers at checkpoints in Os- hawa, Ajax, Whitby and north Durham stopped 4,800 vehicles and conducted 68 roadside breathalyzer tests during the campaign, which also nabbed a driver who was hold- ing an open beer when police looked into the vehicle. On Thursday night, officers on Hwy. 2 in Courtice had a close call, scrambling to get out of the way of a car as it sped toward their RIDE stop. The car slammed into a marked police cruiser - which sat by the side of the road with its roof lights flashing - before coming to a stop. The female driver was arrested and charged with impaired driving, exceeding the legal blood-alcohol limit, dangerous driving and failing to stop for police. Meanwhile, 12 other drivers stopped by police had their licences suspended for 12 hours after regis- tering a warning on the breathalyz- er, police said. Another four were busted for drug possession. Another 18 drivers were charged with various Highway Traffic Act offences, police said. Editorials &Opinions WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 25, 2004 ✦ News Advertiser ✦ DAVID STELL, NEWS EDITOR, 905-683-5110 EXT. 249 Letters to the Editor McGuinty shows no commitment to UOIT To the editor: Re: 'Too many questions,' edi- torial of July 30 and 'Minister de- fends government’s UOIT deal- ings,' letter of Aug. 18 from Mary Anne Chambers, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universi- ties. The decision to create and pro- vide funding for the University of Ontario Institute of Technology was announced in my Ontario budget when I was Minister of Fi- nance on May 9, 2001. This visionary advance came as a result of outstanding com- munity leadership from presi- dent Gary Polonsky. He rallied all segments of the community to the cause of excellence in univer- sity education in Durham Re- gion, Ontario and Canada. Great initial strides were taken and the university began on a solid foundation. Now, we in Durham Region are faced with a McGuinty govern- ment which demonstrates a lack of commitment to the growth and flourishing of our university and its students. I suggest this is due to their failure to understand the vision for the university and its economic importance. The minister states: "We realize how important the institution is to the regions of Durham and Northumberland." Well, minister, the founding vi- sion aspires much higher. UOIT can and should be one of the leading universities in the world in technological education. Yes, minister, in the world, leading the students of Ontario and Canada to performance at international standards of excellence. It should be compared favourably in the future with universities like MIT in the United States and the In- dian Institute of Technology in Mumbai. Our university should excel at nuclear and automotive engi- neering, in particular given the partnerships with these strong industries here. The university will attract many of the best Canadian and international minds which, in turn, will attract sophisticated knowledge-based enterprises providing superb job opportuni- ties. All Canada will benefit! That's the vision, minister! We will succeed and accom- plish this grand vision for the fu- ture of Ontario and Canada. We may be delayed briefly by the my- opia of the current government, but, in the end, the vision is com- pelling. The creation of UOIT was op- posed by those who for years favoured growth west and north but not east of Toronto. It was opposed by traditional Toronto establishment elites who always favour Toronto. It was opposed by those who failed to grasp the vision of international excellence in technological education and its long-term benefits. We fought the naysayers in 2001 successfully. I have ex- plained the vision of UOIT in per- son directly to the minister and I will be relentless in my efforts on behalf of my constituents for our university. Let's hope the light of under- standing reaches the McGuinty government, so they can grasp the brilliance of the UOIT vi- sion. Jim Flaherty MPP Whitby-Ajax Frenchman's Bay is headed for tough times To the editor: The belief that Frenchman's Bay has been saved, as some people suggest, is an illusion, a fantasy, a myth. Two hundred years ago our bay was a pristine lagoon; a sparkling sapphire separated from Lake Ontario. Circa 1850 it was dredged and connected to the lake to create a commercial port (Liverpool). A pre-Confederation charter was written by the Province of Upper Canada and this jewel's bottom became 'land' with road al- lowances and designated parcels of property called lots. Legal private ownership, en- suing legal battles, abrogation of responsibility, physical inter- ference and political misman- agement gave birth to the mias- ma that plagues us today. My personal vista predicts a changing panorama. This artifi- cial, unnatural body of water, which reacts as a toilet bowl and a receptacle for human effluent, will eventually become a conta- minated wetland. Unless there is a dynamic change with respect to the pre- sent stewardship, our bay will undergo a slow demise. Enjoy what's left of it. Frank Thelkeld Jr. Pickering Some friends missed less than others Isaid goodbye to two old friends this week. One farewell was forever, the other, I greatly hope, is only a temporary distancing. The latter was my neighbour and dear friend, (we'll call him Agamemnon), who is relocating to a different town two or three hours away. Not since I was a kid can I remember that sad, empty feeling of having a pal move out of the neighbourhood. I'm feeling it again now, for even though we all say we'll stay in touch, write, e- mail, phone etc., inevitably dis- tance outweighs all good inten- tions, the swift current of a busy life sweeps us along, and ties are loosened or simply allowed to dissolve. Doesn't that always seem to be the way? But for now, I am missing my friend a great deal. And not in the way where I no longer have a twice weekly lunch buddy or squash partner or fishing pal. Aggie and I never did any of those things. In point of fact, we seldom saw each other through- out the week. But my friend was a kindred spirit, the rarest of peo- ple with whom you automatically connect and feel safe baring your throat to. The kind of friend who grasps your weirdest ideas im- mediately and picks up on your subtlest sarcasms, simply be- cause you share the same wave- length. Friends like that don't need to see each other a lot. It's just nice to know they're nearby. Friends like that, as I say, are rare - rarer still among men, who are more often than not reluctant to comfortably go beyond a slap on the back and a cold beer in the hand. And so, yes, I will miss my friend Agamemnon. We still had a lot of precious ground to cover. My other goodbye, the one I made to a friend I hope never to see again, was of a more complex nature. After six long weeks, I fi- nally said so long to my chemo pump. You may think that six weeks is not a particularly long time for a relationship to develop, but this was a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week affair. We went everywhere together. We were, quite literally, inseparable. At first, I must tell you, I hated him. I found him loud, intrusive and annoying. For most of those six weeks, I couldn't wait to be rid of him. I loudly and repeatedly cursed his damnable presence and several times I came within a hair's breadth of drastic mea- sures. But strangely, over the last few days of our tenure together, I found myself softening. The scales fell from my eyes and I re- alized, not quite too late I hope, that what I thought was a poiso- nous enemy, was perhaps the best friend I have ever had. The brute may have been bothersome and sickening, but his sole pur- pose, I now understand, was to save my life. And he may well have done just that. So here I am alone with my re- grets. Regrets on the one hand for things unsaid and on the other for things said perhaps too loudly. I suppose there's a lesson in there somewhere. Sunderland resident Neil Crone, actor-comic-writer, saves some of his best lines for his columns. Tw o goodbyes, mixed feelings Neil Crone e n t e r l a u g h i n g Editorial Teachers, Province must come to a deal Classroom unrest is simply unfair to the students of Ontario It was certainly nice while it lasted. This past school year, while the provincial govern- ment changed hands from Progressive Conservatives to Liberals, teachers and students were able to focus on what they do best: teach and learn. But recent reports that the Elementary Teachers' Feder- ation of Ontario (ETFO) plans ambitious demands on in- creased preparation time and large salary improvements for instructors has the war drums pounding again. It seems this coming year will see elementary teachers, under strict discipline from ETFO's top brass, pushing strike votes across the province, and a major disruption is possible one year from now. We can only hope the talk is largely negotiation posturing, and that ETFO is using this chance to put the Liberals on notice that they will have a tough fight on their hands in the coming year. What are elementary teachers looking for in a new provincewide deal? They want 200 minutes of prep time each week - in the Durham board the amount is currently 15 0 minutes, up from 135 minutes until a year ago - and they want substantial wage hikes. Education Minister Gerard Kennedy, mindful of the mas- sive $5.6-billion deficit the Liberals inherited last fall, is talk- ing about raises on the order of 2 per cent, and has yet to comment on prep-time demands. It should be noted that the Liberals are committed to other significant classroom improvements at the elemen- tary level that will ease the burden of teachers and improve life for students. Among other things, the Liberals have promised to reduce the pupil-to-teacher ratio to 20-1 up to Grade 3, reducing the demand and strain on a large number of ETFO members. The Province is cash-strapped and the Liberals, faced with budget pressures and education promises it appears they will try hard to keep, will have to be fair with ETFO members. But the teachers' union must be reasonable and prepared to compromise with a government that claims to have teachers' best interests at heart. A slight increase in prep time, combined with wage increases in line with infla- tion, is fair at this time. We can only hope we do not return to the years of bicker- ing and fighting that marked teacher-government relations for so long. Students and parents have paid enough of a price over the past decade. It's time for peace and progress. More to come Perdita’s story has only just begun The disappointment was felt across Durham Region. As Pickering's Perdita Felicien approached the first hurdle in the final of the women's 100-metre Olympic hurdles, so many of us stopped what we were doing to cheer on a young woman who's truly given Durham Region and the rest of Canada something to cheer wildly about. An athlete who, no matter the acco- lades she's achieved over the past year, was still gracious, approachable and proud of her hometown roots. So, when you're pulling that hard for an athlete and the worst is realized - in this case a missed hurdle -- the dis- appointment is understandable. So many of us felt her pain and sympathized as she dealt with the reality of her dream ending this year. But if anything, the story of Perdita Felicien is only be- ginning. Remember, it was just one short year ago that she first burst onto the world track and field scene by tak- ing the 100m hurdles world crown. For an encore, she took the world 60m indoor title in March. And at only the tender age of 23, with arguably her best years still ahead, Ms. Felicien has already become a poster girl for Canadian athletics. With that accommodating per- sonality, that determination to continually improve, Cana- da has an excellent standard-bearer. Pickering woman hopes bitter movie leaves sweet lasting taste By David Stell News Editor DURHAM –Michelle Dou- glas is like a lot of universi- ty students finishing sum- mer break, with one im- portant difference: she's making her first profes- sional short film. The Pickering woman, about to start her third year at Ryerson University in Toronto, won a film grant from Canadian media giant Corus Enter- tainment Inc. this year. She earned approximately $20,000 in funding, her forecasted budget, to bring her story 'Lemonade Stand - Off' to life in Corus's 2004 Young Film- makers Initiative program. The film, when com- plete, will be broadcast na- tionally on possibly a number of cable network stations, including YTV and Treehouse. It will be a four-minute live-action short film based on a fic- tional story by Douglas. Without the funding, her film wouldn't likely get off the ground. "It's impossible to do un- less you're independently wealthy, so grants are the way to go," she says. One of the funding re- quirements is for Douglas to acquire a mentor pro- duction company, which she has in Marble Media, a group of Ryerson grads she is excited to be work- ing with. "There's a lot going on on the business side, I wasn't aware of," she says. "I'll gain a lot of experience in that." She meets weekly with them and goes through the steps of completing the script and obtaining equipment and more. She expects to cast the film in the coming weeks and plans to shoot it in a series of a few days, likely in Sep- tember. "I'm excited, but it's a lit- tle intimidating," she says. "It helps that I have a men- tor." The premise of the story sounds like fun, but pre- sents challenges in itself for filming, she says. "Working with kids is dif- ficult," she says. "It's about two children competing to build the ultimate lemon- ade stand. "The spirit of sharing overcomes these two kids' thirst for lemonade stand glory." In casting the film, she has more decisions to make, whether to go with actors in a union, which would cost more, or look to local drama programs for amateurs. ‘It’s impossible to do unless you’re independently wealthy.’ MICHELLE DOUGLAS Her completion date for the project is March 2005, but filming an outdoor lemonade stand in Decem- ber or January just isn't going to work, so she plans to have the filming done be- fore the end of September. Sun-Young Lee will be the conductor of the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra, established by the Shanghai Grand The- atre Group. The orchestra will perform in the revital- ized Grand Theatre in Shanghai. "Sun-Young has charmed audiences young and old... and I am sure she will do so in Shang- hai," said Sherry Bassin, chairman of the ODSO board of directors. "Her new appointment is a cause for celebration... because it confirms the world-class level of musi- cians involved in the Os- hawa-Durham Symphony. We wish her well and will look for special occasions to invite her back." Lee has been associated with ODSO for seven years, conducting two concerts a year each sea- son. She also directed the school concerts presented by ODSO. She'll continue her work with the sym- phony and is scheduled to conduct the April 2, 2005 concert. In recent sea- sons, ODSO, under the di- rection of conductor and music director Marco Parisotto, has seen its au- dience base expand and has attracted world-class artists. Playing in the championship final of the Ajax Soccer Club Tournament last weekend, the United Lightning lost 1-0 to Wa terloo. Lightning dominated the final with play being in Waterloo’s end for more than half the game. Waterloo had three shots on net, one of them squeez- ing past the Ajax goalie. United continued to fight back, but couldn’t get one in the back across Waterloo’s goal line. The Lightning faced defending tourna- ment champion Brampton United in the semifinal, with Brampton determined to make a trip back to the final. Brampton scored early to take a 1-0 lead. But, the Lightning girls fought back to score two unanswered goals to post a come-from- behind 2-1 victory. During round-robin play, the Ajax United Lightning faced the number-one team from York Region, the Newmarket Hurricanes, in Game 1, earning a 3-0 win. The Ajacians went on to defeat Oshawa Kicks 3-0 and then finished the day by soundly defeating Peterborough 9-0 to earn a berth in the semifinals. Team members are Michelle Blakeley, Madeline Iozzi, Carlie Stewart, Stephanie DiVita, Shaniqua Meikle, Katelyn Haisley, Nadia Ben Hamoud, Julie Devost and Jor- dan Thornton. Missing members were Brianne Wagar and Margaret Mary Campigotto. Paul Meikle coaches the team, assist- ed by Kurt Haisley and Ben Hamoud. Pickering Heat golden in Stratford PICKERING —The Pickering Heat Girls’ fast-pitch team wasn’t at the Olympics, but it did bring home the gold earlier this month. The 15- and 16-year-olds, sponsored by Pickering Mens Slo Pitch, took the gold medal at the Ontario PWSA bantam tier II championship, Aug. 13 to 15 in Stratford. The Heat now travel to New Brunswick this weekend to represent Ontario in the Eastern Canadian championships. Af ter dropping the first game in the double-knockout tournament, the girls re- sponded with eight straight victories to claim the title. Their opponent for the gold was an undefeated Brampton squad, and the Heat turned an early 2-0 deficit into an eight-inning, 5-3 victory. Since it was Brampton’s first loss, the two teams had to square off again. Brampton ap- peared to have an edge, given that the Pickering girls were playing their fourth game of the day compared to Brampton, which had played four the entire tourna- ment. Af ter the regulation seven innings, the teams were deadlocked in a score- less tie. A two-out hit in the eighth inning gave Brampton a 2-0 lead, but Pickering showed true grit in scoring three in its half of the frame to take the champi- onship. The pressure was on the Heat after they lost the first game of the tourna- ment, a 3-1 setback against Palmerston. However they responded with victories over a Six Nations team and squads from Ancaster, Palmerston, in a rematch, and Whitby. The winning ways continued with a tense, eight-inning 1-0 victory over Missis- sauga South West. That win put the Heat in the silver medal game, and their path to gold continued when they defeated Kitchener 3-2. Timely hitting, superb defence and a winning attitude were the ingredients in the championship-winning effort. Pitcher Jenn Lamonica was named tournament MVP, as she pitched every game and posted an ERA of below one. In addition to Lamonica, team mem- bers are Renee Bonneau, Heather Bowes, Michelle Deidun, Jayme Doughty, Laura Fujita, Andrea McGibbon, Stephanie Nakamura, Sam Puddister, Alysha Ripley and Jenn Valentini. Dennis Bowes, Kathleen Bowes and Tr acy McGibbon coach the team while Mark Fujita is the manager. Red Sox perfect in clinching title PICKERING – The Pickering Red Sox mosquito AAA baseball team went unde- feated recently to win the Eastern On- tario Baseball Championship. The Red Sox clinched the title by beating the Whitby Blue AAA team 9-8 in the final. Pickering was trailing 4-0 and 8-7 at different points in the game but timely pitching, hitting and defence propelled the comeback. Pickering hit a late seventh-in- ning two-run homer to win the game. The Red Sox record at the tourna- ment was 5-0. Pickering and Whitby now compete in a best-of-five series to determine who represents the EOBA in the AAA Ontario Championships in Cambridge over the Labour Day weekend. The Red Sox went into the tourna- ment coming off an undefeated win at the Newmarket Silver Bat Tournament. Seven Pickering students have earned spots at the World Championships in Shanghai, Oct. 15 to 25. Seven teens off to Shanghai in October By John Herron Special to the News Advertiser PICKERING – Seven young Pickering residents are ready to take on the world’s best dragon boat racers. Aaron Holt and Jessica Sellers of Dunbarton High School and Kyle Smith, Karl Poyhonen, Kim Stewart, Catlin Haggie and Maia Kirk of Pine Ridge Secondary School, are com- peting with the 18-and-under team in the 250 and 500 metre races in both the mixed and open races, at the World Championships in Shang- hai, China from Oct. 15 to 25. Also making the trip will be senior and masters athletes. Sellers, Haggie and Kirk are mem- bers of the only women’s team in the open race, which is part of a protest by Team Canada. With no race re- served strictly for women at the championships, the women’s team is going head-to-head against the men. “We are putting our junior women into the open race,” states Canadian coach Scott Madill emphatically. “We’re hoping to force the Dragon Boat Federation to reconsider their current regulations and to create a junior women’s race.” Each boat carries 22 athletes, in- cluding a drummer and steersper- son. The drummer’s role is to keep the rhythm of the team in synch, while the steersperson shouts com- mands and keeps the boat heading in the right direction. Canada’s mixed team will have 12 men and eight women. More than 2,000 athletes from 19 countries and regions have signed on for the tournament, including Germany, the United States, Japan, Australia, South Africa, Russia, Canada and China. Madill points out that people in Canada have a hard time believing just how mas- sive this event is. “It’s such a big deal in China that we expect 40,000 people at the race,” says Madill. “If that isn’t remarkable enough, there are 90,000 people ex- pected at the closing ceremonies.” Frenchman’s Bay in Pickering has been the location for many of Cana- da’s on-water preparations. Madill has also had his athletes training in much smaller Olympic-sized boats, as they are more difficult to ma- noeuvre than the larger dragon boat. “If you’re a great fastball hitter you should be able to handle a soft- ball,” explains Madill. “In terms of making them make the adjustments to a more demanding boat, I’m hop- ing that it’s going to parlay into bet- ter results in the dragon boat.” Canada is looking to finish with a time of two minutes or faster in the 500m open race. They’ve been clocked at that time on Frenchman’s Bay and feel it will be enough to se- cure a medal. However, wind condi- tions are known to drastically change on any given day. The team is currently raising funds and seeking sponsorship, with each participant expected to foot the bill for their trip. Primeau returns to his Durham roots Wants that elusive Stanley Cup By Brian McNair Staff Writer DURHAM –Those who watched him dismantle the Toronto Maple Leafs in the playoffs already know what dri- ves Keith Primeau these days. But in case you missed it in his ac- tions, Primeau puts it succinctly enough into words: he wants to hoist the Stanley Cup. “As you enter the later stages of your career it becomes all-consuming during the season,” says the 32-year- old Whitby native. “It’s what you strive for. I’ve enjoyed making runs at it and disappointed when I’ve only come close. I still hope to attain it.” Primeau, who returned to his hometown recently to help support the Ontario Lacrosse Festival, turned his game up several notches in pur- suit of that goal this past spring. The 6-foot-5, 220-pound centre showed why he wears the ‘C’ for the Philadelphia Flyers, not only putting up 9-7-16 numbers in 18 games, but physically dominating opponents at both ends of the ice. This despite coming off a concus- sion that limited him to 7-15-22 stats in 54 regular season games. “I think I played so well (in the playoffs) because my focus had to be so strong,” he explains. “I don’t think I’ve ever focused as hard as I did in these playoffs just because I was so acutely aware of how my head felt.” Primeau fell short, as his Flyers were eliminated in seven games by the eventual winner, the Tampa Bay Lightning. His disappointment was shared by brother Wayne, who, also in search of his first Stanley Cup, lost out in the other semifinal with the San Jose Sharks. “People wondered if we had a prob- lem if we were to both be in the finals, but we felt it was such a wonderful opportunity for one of us to be on the Cup,” says Keith, whose parents, Mike and Peg, live in Brooklin. “For our family to be on the Cup was more important than who won and we’d like to be back in that position again.” If they are, one thing is for certain: they won’t fight. Playing against each other for the first time as professionals, Keith, then with the Hartford Whalers, initi- ated a scrap with Wayne, a Buffalo Sabre at the time, after Wayne bumped into the goalie. Not amused, their mother set them straight. “A fterward, on reflection, we felt it wasn’t a wise thing to do and we swore at that time it wouldn’t happen again,” says Keith. Like the other NHL stars from Whitby, the Primeaus played lacrosse growing up, which in part explained Keith’s presence at the Festival. He says the game probably helped hone his and his brother’s skills, as well as those of Joe Nieuwendyk, Gary Roberts and Adam Foote. Primeau’s lone desire this summer has been a full recovery from the lin- gering effects of the concussion. Pri- marily because of that, he says he wasn’t disappointed about not being named to Team Canada for the up- coming World Cup. Primeau lives in New Jersey during the hockey season and at a cottage in Hanover in the summer with his wife and four kids. If, as expected, the hockey season is delayed by a work stoppage, Primeau’s plans for the lay- off are simple, but important, enough. “I’ll take the kids to school every day and pick them up.” Sports Briefs AUGUST 25, 2004 New owners, new look, new captain for Pickering junior A club By Jeff Hayward Special to the News Advertiser PICKERING –The Pickering Pan- thers are hoping some big changes will equal big success this season. With a new ownership group at the helm, (Paul Fenwick, Randy Hebscher, Rick Cornacchia, and John Porco), the junior A squad is looking for good things, as the club explained at a press conference last week to discuss the coming season. Panther's general manager Frank Robinson talked of bringing back the "tradition" of having an arena full of spectators on game night, like the club once enjoyed. As for Panthers coach John Winder, he foresees a big turn- around from last year's record of 12 wins, 30 losses, and seven ties. They were swept from the playoffs in the first round. "Obviously sec- ond-last place last year must be im- proved upon," said Winder, who's en- tering his second year as coach. "With the new owners' commitment to de- velopment, we see a realistic climb in the standings. Our mandate is to pre- pare and send players to the next level." The meeting also served as a chance for Winder to announce the new captain of the team, Ryan An- nesley. The 18-year-old defence- man, in his third year with the team, sees good things for the road ahead. He will wear the captain's 'C' on a newly designed jersey, and plans to motivate his team with the added responsibility. "I'm going to be boosting the younger guys," he said, adding he has been doing so leading up to his captaincy. "We have to prove that we're giving it our all so we can take ourselves far." To further set the atmosphere of the afternoon, team trainer Scotty Ramage spearheaded a historical spread of Panthers memorabilia dating back to 1972, when the team came into existence. Ramage said he has been involved with the team since the beginning. He noted he has seen the team experience many ups and downs over the years, and was even on hand to see ex-Panthers Joe Nieuwendyk, Glenn Healy and Doug Dadswell make their way to the ranks of the National Hockey League. "I think we have a lot of good young guys coming back, we have a good chance (to go far)," said Ram- age. The Panthers officially open their regular season Sunday, Sept. 12 against the Ajax Axemen. The team's website, with the full schedule for the upcoming season and the new team logo, can be found at www.pickeringpanther- sjra.com. Panthers keeping busy building roster PICKERING –The Pickering Pan- thers got a jump on the season with a series of roster moves. The OHA Ontario Provincial Ju- nior 'A' Hockey League club an- nounced it has signed seven play- ers who were with the club last sea- son. The Panthers also signed two veteran players from other junior organizations. Goaltender Bryan Schermele, de- fencemen Danny Sullivan, Ryan Annesley and Michael Banwell, and forwards Andrew Dissanayake, Derek Lynden and John Scrym- geour have all agreed to return. Schermele came to the Panthers from the Trenton Sting last Janu- ary and finished the season strong. According to Panthers' general manager Frank Robinson, Scher- mele's work in the playoffs against the Newmarket Hurricanes was a "real bright spot." Meanwhile, Annesley, Dis- sanayake, and Lynden are begin- ning their third junior seasons, while Sullivan, Scrymgeour, and Banwell enter their sophomore campaigns. The team also acquired veteran forward Jeff Birr from the Colling- wood Blues of the OPJAHL's North Conference. Birr had 19 goals and 24 assists for the Blues as well as leading them in playoff scoring last year. Along with Birr, the Panthers have obtained the services of veter- an defenceman Kyle Roulston from the Owen Sound Greys of the Mid- West Junior 'B' League. Roulston played for Owen Sound the past three seasons and last year was their captain, leading the defence with 12 goals and 18 as- sists. "We believe these two veteran players will complement the seven returning veterans previously signed," says Robinson, in a press release. Kickboxing, Pilates and Hip Hop just for you!Qualified & Caring Teachers The Fall season brings many changes: the weather becomes a little cooler, the leaves change colour, children are going back to school and regis- tration for local children’s programs is booming. The News Advertiser is pleased to present the eight annual Fall Registration Show. The Fall Registration Show will be held on August 26, 27 and 28 at The Pickering Town Centre. With 27 vendors, this show is sure to pro- vide a wide variety of programs that will help get you and your children involved in the communi- ty. There are many diverse programs for you to choose from, such as dance groups, martial arts and educational learning. “We’ve tried to make it a well-rounded show with many different types of programs,” says one of the show’s coordinators Laurie Thompson. Year after year the Fall Registration Show has grown and vendors realize its enormous popularity as they keep coming back to display what they have to offer. The show serves as a one-stop shop to regis- ter your child in a stimu- lating activity. A wonderful incentive for visiting the show is that if you register on any of the three days, vendors are prepared to offer you a registration fee at a dis- counted rate. So while you are back-to-school shopping at The Pickering Town Centre, it might not be a bad idea to check out the Show. Don’t forget to fill out a ballot for a chance to win a family pass to Paramount Canada’s Wonderland, courtesy of The News Advertiser. Show co-ordinators Laurie Thompson and Cori-Ann Harness would like to express their sin- cere gratitude to this year’s sponsors. “It has been the most support The Fall Registration Show has received and we want to thank our sponsors for doing such a fantastic job,” says Thompson. This year’s sponsors include The Dance Experience, Denise Lester Dance Academy, Durham Dance Centre, Durham School of Music Ltd., Jacqueline’s School of Dance, The Liverpool School of Martial Arts, O’Brien Dance Centre. Planet Gymnastics, The City of Pickering and Wasdell Centre for Innovative Learning Inc. The hours of The Fall Registration Show are Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. We hope to see you there and thanks for your support. 8th Annual Fall Registration Show sure to be a success A/P PAGE 18 NEWS ADVERTISER,WEDNESDAY EDITION, August 25, 2004 www.durhamregion.com CLASSES OFFERED IN • TAP • JAZZ • POINTE • ACRO • KINDERDANCE • HIP HOP • MUSICAL THEATRE • LYRICAL • AGES 3 & UP DURHAM DANCE CENTRE OFFERS... • All classes taught by Professionally Qualified Teachers • Recreational and Competitive Classes • Ballet Classes from Pre-Primary to Intermediate • R.A.D.
