Ms. Nova reach- es in and grabs hold of two hairy legs, slowly dragging the world’s largest rodent, which hails from South America, out into the damp morning air. Capy 2 comes out of his own volition. Each weighs about 140 pounds. Raised on a farm in Mani- toba, the R.A. Sennett Public School principal is an animal lover. But the chickens and cattle of her youth bare no re- semblance to her growing collection of exotic animals. There are snakes and skinks, coatimundi and even an Indi- an bull. Their previous owners did- n’t want them, even abused them, or they could not sur- vive in the wild. In any case, they all find refuge on the farm, to the delight of chal- lenged children who attend a sensory summer camp Ms. Nova started last year. “At Nova’s Ark, everyone has value; everyone belongs,” she says. “It’s OK if you’re not perfect.” Ms. Nova, a former special- education facilitator, says her campers, all of whom require wheelchairs, don’t have the opportunity to talk. So she stimulates their senses with the sights, sounds, textures and smells of her small zoo, and instead of listening for words, she and volunteers watch for eye flickers, high- pitched squeals or a firm hand grip. “Each child is so unique and such an individual that you have to really observe each child to see how they’re reacting,” Ms. Nova says. The campers learn about the animals and get to meet them face-to-face. Ms. Nova and her volunteers bring the creatures over to each camper for a close encounter. There are also crafts, games, songs and stories, all related to the day’s theme, organized by Bobby Orr Public School teacher Jenn Luloff. The camp consists of two, week-long sessions, each costing $500. Many campers are supported financially by Easter Seals. But for many Durham children that just isn’t possible. The Durham Red Cross, United Way of Ajax-Picker- ing-Uxbridge and the Pick- ering Town Centre (PTC) are helping those less-for- tunate children by provid- ing pens, pencils and paper too. The fifth annual school supply drive was launched at the PTC last week and it runs until Sept. 12. Three yellow school buses are lo- cated in the mall to accept donations of glue sticks, pencil crayons or rulers, among the many items. The supplies are to be packed into backpacks and distrib- uted to students in need. The United Way launched Cyclists remain in hospital Three in serious condition following accident in north Pickering PICKERING –Three of the 17 cyclists hit by an out-of-con- trol van in rural Pickering on the weekend remained in hospital early this week, Durham Regional Police said. The three still in hospital were listed in serious but stable condition and expect- ed to recover, police said. Another cyclist who was among the most seriously injured has been released from a Toronto hospital. Meanwhile, investigators with the Durham Regional Police traffic management unit say charges are pending as a result of the crash, which occurred Saturday morning when a van cross- ing Brock Road on White- vale Road was clipped by an oncoming car and spun into the cyclists. Police have already ruled out alcohol and speed as factors in the accident, said Constable Mark Stone. Reports at the time of the accident said a westbound Chrysler minivan was hit by a northbound Ford Taurus as the van crossed Brock Road. The van skidded into the group of cyclists, who were eastbound on White- vale Road and had stopped while waiting to cross Brock Road. The van, driven by a 64- year-old man from West Hill, careened into the group of cyclists, 15 of whom were in- jured, police said. Injuries Organizer wants to hold best-ever Terry Fox run By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING – The new chair- man of Pickering’s Terry Fox Run has set some tough goals for himself. “My goal is to raise or con- tinue the awareness of the dream of Terry Fox, who is personally my idol. And to rid this world of cancer,” said Kevin Cahill. Mr. Cahill has been a member of the committee for years and was asked to take on the lead role this year. He agreed and deter- mined a goal for himself. As part of the mandate to increase awareness he wants to get the word out about this year’s run, even though it doesn’t take place until Sept. 19. In its first year, 150 children in Ajax and Pickering received school supplies because of the program. Last year 40,000 school supplies were collected and 3,500 backpacks were given out across Durham. However there was still a need for more. This year the organizers hope to fill 5,000 bags. “This is the first year we’ll meet all the need, which is really nice,” said Chris Merlin, branch co-ordi- nator with the Red Cross. The Red Cross picks up the sup- plies from the mall and its youth committee packs the thousands of bags. “A fter five years they have it down to a fine art,” she joked, al- though it is time consuming. They make them for four differ- ent age groups: kindergarten to Grade 2; Grade 3 to 5; Grade 6 to 8; and high school. “It’s grown phenomenally with the help of the United Way and Red Cross,” said Lorna Murphy, PTC’s marketing director. “The need grows, there’s always agen- cies and schools who call the Unit- ed Way. As long as there is a need in the community, we would like to help the cause.” Ms. Klazek hopes the communi- ty helps the drive to meet its goal. “It’s an easy way for people to give to their community by giving something small and they know it’s going to get into the right hands,” she said. The drive is also supported by numerous sponsors from the mall and the community, as well as local service clubs and churches. Items required are: backpacks, reusable lunch bags, pencils, r ulers, highlighters, calculators, lined paper, glue sticks, pencil sharpeners, pencil crayons, erasers, pencil cases, binders, math sets, duotangs, dividers, and notebooks. Participation in the event and funds raised have steadily risen each year. In 2000 $22,000 was raised and last year more than $138,000 was raised. Mr. Cahill is proud of the efforts made in Pickering over the years but he wants to build on that suc- cess. “I’d just like to really push it. I’d like to see the participation level go up since our community has really grown,” he said. “I realize there are a lot of charities out there but this dreaded cancer thing is still getting a lot of people.” To raise awareness Mr. Cahill is trying to get some celebrities to make an appearance. “I’ll do whatever it takes to raise that bar as Terry did to rid this world of cancer.” Mr. Fox was diagnosed with bone cancer at 18 and was forced to have a leg amputated. While in hospital, he decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. He called his journey the Marathon of Hope. The run started in St. John’s, Newfoundland on April 12, 1980. Mr. Fox ran 42 km per day through At- lantic Canada, Quebec and On- tario. On Sept. 1, after 143 days and 5,373 km, he was forced to stop run- ning outside of Thunder Bay be- cause cancer had appeared in his lungs. He passed away on June 28, 1981 at age 22. A run has been held in his name every year since 1981 in countries around the world to raise money for cancer research. Pledge sheets are now available online at www.terryfoxrun.org and they are to be available at City facil- ities. Building on Pickering’s success ✦ Building from page A1 Ajax location among the latest in region where eight birds have come up positive DURHAM –Among the GTA com- munities, Durham Region ranks higher by two dead birds than run- ner-up Toronto for confirmed cases of West Nile virus. Results of the Aug. 16 update of the 2004 Dead Bird Surveillance program produced by Health Cana- da showed Toronto with six con- firmed cases, Halton Region with five and Peel and York regions with four each. Glendene Collins of the Durham Region health department said there might be eight confirmed cases in Durham Region but the numbers across the GTA are clos- er when looking at percentages. For instance, Tor onto moves to f irst place with approximately 20 per cent of con- firmed cases, and Durham Region is second with 13 per cent. In succes- sion, Halton Region is third with fewer than 13 per cent, Peel Region is fourth with over 10 per cent and Yo rk is last with less than 1 per cent. “It really depends on the number of birds brought in for analysis,” said Ms. Collins. On Aug. 10, one bird from the Town of Ajax and two from the Mu- nicipality of Clarington were brought in for analysis and tested positive with results received by DRHD Aug. 11 and 13. These results were included in the Region’s Aug. 16 r eport. “As Pickering remains the only municipality without a positive bird f inding so far this season, the Health Department will now sub- mit...dead crows, blue jays or rap- tors received from the Pickering area (only),” said Ross MacEachern, manager of the Environmental Health division of the Durham Re- g ion Health Department. “Dead bird reports for all other municipal- ities in the Region will be recorded as sightings and enhanced surveil- lance activities will take place around the areas where the positive birds have been found.” Ms. Collins said they test to deter- mine where the threats of exposure are so they can post alerts to the community that West Nile has ar- rived. Because Pickering is the only community without a confirmed case, they must continue monitor- ing the area as a precaution. Provincially, 152 birds tested posi- tive so far this year for West Nile. The total for the year in 2003 across Ontario was 242 birds. Ms. Nova says she had to turn away volunteers because so many young people wanted to help her out this year. “It’s really rewarding, just seeing all the kids’ faces and being able to do this,” says Holly Tuinman, enter- ing Grade 9 at Henry Street High School next month. “It’s more like fun and not work.” Holly also volunteers at the farm on weekends - feeding and cleaning up after the animals and doing other chores. It’s good training, since Holly wants to be a veterinari- an and have her own farm one day. Danijela Eric from Pickering is off to Dunbarton High School next year. She had experience working with unique people, so when a for- mer teacher asked if she wanted to pitch in at the camp, she jumped at the chance. “I get to meet new people and work with developmental kids and see animals I don’t normally see,” Danijela says, adding she would gladly come back next year. Candace McLeave graduated from Bobby Orr in June and is at- tending Monsignor John Pereyma Catholic Secondary School in Sep- tember. “I like kids with disabilities,” she says. Candace and the other volunteers say some of the animals make them a bit nervous before they become used to them. For her, it was Rambo the bull. “He was a little creepy at first,” Candace says. When it’s time to leave, each camper receives a binder filled with photos they and their parents can share with friends. Ms. Nova says her ark is “a safe place for everyone.” www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER,WEDNESDAY EDITION, August 18, 2004 PAGE A5 P Why lose sleep over home heating rates? To protect against West Nile virus in- fection, the Health Department recom- mends avoiding areas with high mosquito populations and using mosquito repellent containing DEET. When applying repellent, manufac- turer’s instructions should be carefully followed. Adults can seek a product con- taining 30 per cent DEET or less, and children should wear a repellent with a maximum of 6 to 10 per cent DEET. Children under 6 months of age should not use DEET, and for children be- tween 6 months and 2 years old, DEET should only be applied once per day, and no more than three times per day for children aged 2 to 12 years. Long-sleeved shirts, pants, shoes, socks and hats in light colours are rec- ommended to cover exposed skin. Mos- quitoes are attracted to dark colours. To help keep houses secure from mosquito invaders, the DRHD advises checking that all doors and windows have tight-fitting screens in good condition Wat er that has been stagnating from more than a week makes a good breed- ing ground for mosquitoes and should be eliminated. Editorials &Opinions WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 18, 2004 ✦ News Advertiser ✦ DAVID STELL, NEWS EDITOR, 905-683-5110 EXT. 249 Letters to the Editor What a mess we're making To the editor: Re: 'Cigarette butt-flickers upsetting,' letter, Aug. 11. I couldn't agree more with Bob Graham's comments, espe- cially "the roadside looks like an open-concept garbage can." The cigarette butts are only one problem, what about the pop cans, coffee cups and debris thrown all over the place? What kind of people throw this garbage around? I have made numerous calls to the works de- partment, city councillors and the mayor's office about this very subject. I am appalled at the amount of garbage on the streets in Pickering. Marjorie Seymour Pickering In defence of government's UOIT dealings To the editor: Re: 'Too many questions,' edi- torial of July 30. Your recent editorial concern- ing the University of Ontario In- stitute of Technology questions our government's support of the institution and also includes some inaccuracies. First, it is important to note that the issues surrounding UOIT's capital plan have centred on the amount of capital debt that UOIT would be permitted to take on, not on the amount of funding the institution would re- ceive. As a new institution shar- ing facilities with Durham Col- lege, UOIT is required to obtain government approval for Durham College to guarantee its capital debt financing. The fund- ing that UOIT receives from our government is proportional to the level of funding that other Ontario universities receive. Before leaving office, the previ- ous government did not have the details in place for UOIT's capital financing. It agreed to $190 mil- lion in borrowing support but UOIT never submitted a detailed business plan to outline how those funds would be allocated and that level of debt managed. We r emain strongly committed to UOIT and its students, staff and faculty. We realize how im- portant the institution is to the regions of Durham and Nor thumberland. That is why we have gone to such lengths to de- velop a long-term capital plan with UOIT to ensure its success. A few months after we took of- fice, it became clear to us that UOIT's $190-million capital plan, as it was structured at the time, would not put the institution on a sustainable financial footing. That is why we sent in an exter- nal examiner to work with UOIT to ensure the institution had a long-term business plan that would best serve the interests of its students. The examiner recommended that our government approve an additional $30 million in borrow- ing support, in order for UOIT to build an engineering facility that would ensure the future success of its engineering program. The examiner made other recom- mendations that would allow for UOIT to manage this level of cap- ital debt. Over the past two months, we have worked with UOIT and Durham College to reach an agreement that is based on the examiner's recommenda- tions. With the agreement now signed by all parties, UOIT has a viable long-term capital plan. Our government is also com- mitted to openness and trans- parency. My ministry agreed to release the examiner's report once the agreement was signed. That is exactly what we did. When your publication requested a copy of the agreement, I offered my personal assurance that we would release it. You received a copy of the agreement the very next day. Mary Anne Chambers Minister of training, colleges and universities Government of Ontario Don’t make light of sexual harassment To the editor: Re: 'I am woman, hear me roar,' Carly Foster column, Aug. 1. Did a brick fall on Ms. Foster's head while she was on tour of the construction site? Sexual harass- ment of any kind, including jeer- ing, catcalls and pin-ups should not be welcomed or tolerated in any industry. Consider focusing less on your hair and heels and more on the continued inequalities in the workplace as well as the avail- ability of skilled trades in the construction industry for both men and women. Tiina Henkusens Ajax Ireally don't like personal water craft. No, check that. I hate personal water craft. I am very liberal-minded about a lot of things. I didn't fly off the handle when the New Coke was introduced. I wrote a few letters, but I didn't lose it when they dis- continued Peanut Butter Cap- tain Crunch. I even grew to like Pierce Brosnan as Bond. But when it comes to PWC's a.k.a. JET SKIs, Sea-Doo's etc., I am an unabashed, dyed-in-the-wool, no-patience snob. I hate them and I would vaporize them all at the push of a button. If this sounds a little vitriolic, I should tell you I'm actually soft- ening quite a bit. It wasn't that long ago that I would've happily passed the same sentence on snowmobiles and ATVs. I would've lumped them all into the same category of noisy, fume- spewing, environment-trashing toys for attention deficit cases. The only good thing about any of them was that through continu- ous misuse, they kept the idiot population in check. But, as I say, I am softening with age. I am now able to admit that while still noisy, fume-spew- ing and environment-trashing, those vehicles can at least serve a utilitarian purpose. Farmers, for instance, some of my favourite people, find them indispensable in tending to their crops, live- stock and fences. They can be loaded down with supplies and used to reach out-of-the-way cabins and retreats, some of which are probably owned by tree-huggers like me. None of these noble qualities, however, can be attributed to the PWC. In fact, after countless hours of observation from the deck of my parents' cottage, it is my confirmed opinion that the only purpose these scurrying lit- tle aqua roaches have is to re- peatedly, and at an insane speed, streak back and forth in a straight line, make far more noise than they should for their size and terrifying any nesting water- fowl within 50 kilometres into abandoning their offspring. Somebody, please tell me I'm wrong. Tell me there's more to it than that. Tell me how your JET SKI has changed your life, how your family has never been closer now that you're enjoying solitary rides and shouting at each other over the engine's din. I honestly wish there was some valid form of payback, some way of irritating them to the degree they infuriate me. But how do those of us who value peace and quiet and clean water exact any kind of revenge on such an insen- sate nemesis? What do I do, fol- low them back to their trailer and pull the plug on their generator just as they're about to tell who gets voted off the island? I'd like to think there's room for all of us on this planet, but that only works if there's respect and consideration for our differences. And that ain't gonna happen anytime soon. So ride up and down the lake on your little wa- terbug until your butt's a prune, pal, and go ahead and scare the hell out of the loons (which, by the by, were here before either you or I). Beth, as she's been dubbed by those trying to save her, was ne- glected and maltreated for months on end. Found by Clarington Animal Control Services in the backyard of a Courtice residence, it's a wonder the suffering ani- mal was still alive. Debby Hunt, animal cruelty investigator for the Hu- mane Society of Durham Region, says Beth's is the worst case of neglect she has seen in 13 years on the job. It will take a tremendous effort to keep her alive but certainly the effort will be made to do so. Ms. Hunt is carrying out an investigation to try to find out who is responsible for what happened to Beth. What's alarming is that, while not as severe, there are still many other Beths out there. These defence- less animals are abused by sadistic or neglectful own- ers who can't be bothered to care for them. The ani- mals have no one to speak for them. But the federal government, thankfully, appears to be taking notice of the problem. After reports of mas- sive puppy mills across Canada came out several years ago, the move to beef up penalties for animal cruelty gained strength. Now, the senate is looking into third reading of a tougher animal cruelty bill that would increase the maximum jail term for those convicted to five years imprisonment from six months. And fines would go from a current upper limit of $2,000 to $10,000. Judges would also be able to make those found guilty of ani- mal cruelty pay for the care of any animals they abused and magistrates would also have the power to determine if those convicted would be allowed to own an animal in the future. While this tougher legislation will likely be in place in the near future, we can all do our part by notifying the Humane Society of Durham Region at 905-433- 2022 if we suspect anybody is abusing or maltreating animals. Remember, the animals can't speak up. Only you can make a difference. Editorial ATTEND PUBLIC MEETINGS AT CITY HALL All meetings are open to the public. An avid yard sale shopper with a fondness for collecting old docu- ments, he was drawn to the piece be- cause it mentioned the local area and Northern Dancer, a horse he rec- ognized, but knew little about. The item’s price tag was a tad expensive by driveway standards, but Mr. Steele, a worker with the City of Tor onto solid waste department, thought it was “neat.” He imagined making prints from the aging plate. It was later, as he gently wiped the corner of the filthy treasure, that Mr. Steele realized he hadn’t got what he paid for. It was far more. Like $8,200 (U.S.) and counting. The black coating, which Mr. Steele originally suspected came from a fire, was actually tarnish. The plate was silver. Still unsure of what he’d pur- chased, Mr. Steele researched the ca- reer of Northern Dancer and his late owner E.P. Taylor of Windfields Farm in Oshawa. He was astounded when a book about the legendary horse revealed that the plate was Northern Dancer’s Canadian horse- of-the-year award from 1964. Aw arded by the ‘Daily Racing Form,’ it detailed Northern Dancer’s wins in the Kentucky Derby, Preak- ness and Queen’s Plate. A call to the Form confirmed it was the original and there was a photo to prove it. “How could this get out?” won- dered a dumbfounded Mr. Steele, who presumed the award had to have been stolen. “It’s like finding the Stanley Cup.” Mr. Steele headed to the police station, prepared to turn over the award. They told him no one had re- ported it stolen and advised him to take it to the Taylor family. Mr. Steele was unsure of their reaction. This was, after all, a precious heir- loom that had somehow made it to a garage sale. The Taylor family, how- ever, were more curious than upset about the find and declined to buy it back. “I’m as amazed as anybody,” said Mr. Taylor’s daughter, Judith Map- pin, in a phone call from Montreal. She has racked her mind trying to recall the award and can’t. She’s even more mystified as to how it ended up for sale. “How it got where it got I don’t know,” she said with a laugh, noting her father wouldn’t likely have just discarded the valuable piece. “Some- body got it somehow, goodness knows how.” Ms. Mappin has only best wishes for Mr. Steele, who has restored the piece and is selling it on eBay this week. “More power to him,” Ms. Map- pin said. “I hope he does very well.” Since posting the award for sale on Sunday, Mr. Steele has received 10 bids. He’s set a minimum bid of $20,000 (U.S.) and expects he’ll get it easily. In less than 48 hours the bid had already reached $8,200. Mr. Steele said he’s had estimates on the award’s worth from $50,000 and be- yond. An American auctioneer offered to sell the piece, but Mr. Steele decided to do it himself online in hopes the award would be purchased locally. He’d prefer it stay in Canada, but says ultimately it will depend on the highest bidder. The award was included as part of a tribute to Northern Dancer, who is considered the most successful thor- oughbred sire ever, at the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame earlier this year. Managing director Louis Cauz asked to borrow the plate after Mr. Steele brought it in to show him. “This is a very unusual piece; a part of Canadiana,” Mr. Cauz said. The racing historian and archivist said he didn’t even know the award existed until Mr. Steele made his sec- ond-hand discovery. It was a fore- runner to the prestigious Eclipse Awards in the U.S. and the Sovereign Awards in Canada. The award is particularly notable, Mr. Cauz explained, because it docu- ments Northern Dancer’s entire rac- ing career on one plaque. “It’s a magnificent trophy,” he said. “Let’s hope it gets a good home.” – Torstar News Service P PAGE A8 NEWS ADVERTISER,WEDNESDAY EDITION, August 18, 2004 www.durhamregion.com Visit us in store or online at www.pleasemum.com. See page B2 Ajax woman dancing for the Argos Blue Thunder team By Al Rivett Sports Editor AJAX —The Dorseys have a defi- nite familial connection with the To r onto Argonauts. Dean Dorsey was once a place- kicker with the Canadian Football League team back in the 1980s. And, now, another Dorsey has donned the traditional double blue. Yo u ’ll find Chloe Dorsey, his niece, on the sidelines at the Argonauts’ games. But, she won’t be wearing shoulder pads and kicking the ball through the uprights. Rather, she’ll be cheering and dancing as part of the Argonaut Blue Thunder dance team — one of 26 on the squad entertaining the crowds between quarters and at halftime — at Toronto’s SkyDome this season. And, performing in front of large crowds has been a blast for the 19- year-old Ajax High School graduate, who’s been dancing for the past 16 years and now teaches it in Ajax. “It’s so much fun,” says Dorsey, in her first year with the team. “It’s great to be a part of something like this, dancing in the SkyDome for 28,000 people. Seeing the crowds and the fans coming up to you for autographs — it’s quite exciting.” She remembers opening night against the Saskatchewan Roughriders on June 15 as being a supercharged atmosphere, with more than 28,000 people in atten- dance. “The first game was very exciting. I had no idea what to expect. Fire- works were going off and we ran out of a tunnel. There were so many people there. The players ran out of the tunnel right beside us and we were cheering them on,” she recalls. Fun, maybe, but being a member of the Blue Thunder is a lot of work, too, admits Dorsey. The dancers as- semble twice a week for three-hour practice sessions at the Square One Mall in Mississauga, where dance routines are honed until they are down pat. The team performs at three games per month on average during the season, not to mention several promotional events. On game day, the dance team has a pre-game program to prepare for the evening. The team assembles at 5 p.m., with an on-field run-through scheduled for 5:30 p.m. where the dancers warm up to music and go over the musical cues. Following the session, it’s back to the change rooms to get into uniform and pre- pare for the night’s performance. Everyone’s ready to go by 7 p.m. for the 7:30 kickoff. With all the hoopla surrounding the games, Dorsey says being “on the ball” is a big part of ensuring everything goes well. “Everyone has to be very together, there’s no room for error. We have to know the sideline cheers and the centrefield dance we do at the quar- ters. There’s so much going on around you, there’s the music and the game going on, and you have to pay attention to what you have to do next,” she says. Being part of the team is a natur- al extension to her dance back- ground, says Dorsey. She began tak- ing lessons at age three and for the last 10 years has danced competi- tively in jazz, tap, lyrical and hip hop with the O’Brien Dance Centre where she also teaches. Later this year, she expects to complete her exam for Canadian Dance Teachers Association certification. Dorsey tried out for the Blue Thunder team last year, but, at age 18, was deemed too young for the demands. This year, however, she survived two tryout sessions, the f irst in Markham that attracted more than 200 wannabe cheerlead- ers and the final cutdown, at the Eaton’s Centre in Toronto in early April. The other cheerleaders, says Dorsey, are from across the GTA. She notes a sense of camaraderie has developed among the dancers since the beginning of the season. “They’re great,” says Dorsey. “They’re so much fun. I’ve met so many different girls and I’m friends with many of them.” Being part of Blue Thunder, says Dorsey, has helped her gain confi- dence, meet new people — especial- ly networking with other dancers in the GTA — as well as hone her dance skills in a fun and challenging environment. “There’s a lot more discipline than being at a dance studio be- cause it’s a job. I’ve always been dancing for fun. It’s just as much fun, but it’s different because it’s a job — I’m doing what I’ve always prepared and trained for,” she said. She plans to try out for the dance team again next year, as well as at- tending college in the fall where she’ll study creative advertising. A.J. Ajax Spartans dirty up Red Sox in tourney final AJAX – The Ajax Spartans Home Run Academy mosquito select baseball team soared at the West Hill Blue Eagles Tourna- ment recently. The Spartans captured the champi- onship with a convincing 17-7 victory over the Barrie Red Sox in the final. After falling behind early, the Ajax mosquitoes came all the way back — and then some — to seal the tournament title. Jason Brifoglio led the way offensively, scoring three runs and adding two runs batted in. By winning the tournament, the Spar- tans gained automatic entry into the Southern Ontario Baseball Association (SOBA) provincial championship tourna- ment over the Labour Day long weekend. In the semifinal game against the host West Hill Blue Eagles, the Spartans pre- vailed, although no score was submitted. Dominic Lacroix smashed a home run and added three RBIs. Leadoff batters Scott Desroches provided aggressive base run- ning, resulting in three runs scored. In round-robin play, the Ajax mosqui- toes emerged undefeated with wins over We xford, Barrie and Toronto Playground. Against Wexford (no score reported), Ajax pitchers Lacroix and Frank Bond combined to hold Wexford to only one run over five innings. Mike Salzmann led a well-balanced Ajax attack with a single and an RBI. The Ajacians blasted Barrie 19-9 in Game 2 after falling behind 8-0 after the first inning. Josh Burke came in to hold the hard-hitting Barrie Red Sox scoreless through two innings. This gave enough time for the Spartans’ offence to kick in, led by Burke, Taylor Noble and Jacob Stone, who all scored three runs apiece. Against a strong Toronto Playground team, the Ajacians pulled out another win (no score reported), thanks to the offence of Patrick Whittle and Ryley Joseph who scored three and two runs, respectively. Andrew Packer returned from an injury to record an RBI and score a run after being hit by a pitch. After a late Toronto rally, pitcher Brent Whitehead came in to seal the deal, shutting down the opposing bat- ters. Myles Danford was absent for the tournament. John Whitehead, Brian Desroches, Warren Danford and Bill Stone coach the team. Pickering Phoenix rises to occasion in soccer PICKERING – The Pickering Phoenix girls’ under-18 soccer team returned from the biggest female soccer tournament in Canada with the second largest prize re- cently. The St. Catharines Jets grounded the Phoenix girls’ squad in the final 3-0, giving the Pickering girls runners-up status at the National Capital Soccer Tournament in Ot- tawa last weekend. Phoenix head coach Ettore Bruno notes his charges met the challenge of competing in the elite tournament, showing a lot of pride in the process. “The girls really showed a lot of heart, grit and determination all tournament,” says Bruno. “They wanted to be in the final and did everything it took to get there.” In the semifinal game, Pickering over- came injuries, including playing with 10 players for 15 minutes, to defeat the de- fending National Capital champions and New York State champions, Liverpool Unit- ed 1-0. Jessica Bossence scored the lone goal of the game. Phoenix started the tournament with a 2-0 victory over the Sault Civics. Sara Langford and Larissa Gorejko scored. In a tight game, the Pickering under- 18s emerged with a 1-0 win over the Can- nons. Tori Baker scored the game winner. Phoenix clinched first place in their ground and a berth in the semifinals after playing to a 1-1 draw with Unionville in Game 3. Tiziana Cotechini scored for Pick- ering. Other team members are Kristen Ca- vanagh, Aileen Verkuyl, Claire Truesdale, Jenna Walsh, Laura Mee, Mary Faux, Mor- gan Kelly and Sarah Nishikawa. Bruno is assisted by Steve Bossence. The manager is Larry Cavanagh. As part of this proposed undertaking, a portion of the Pickering lands deemed suitable for sale or disposition will be transferred to private owners in return for portions of the Oak Ridges Moraine coming into public ownership. The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing and the Ministry of Natural Resources, with support from staff of the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, have established a Natural Heritage System for the Seaton lands in Pickering. These lands will be retained in public ownership and are not part of the undertaking. This study will follow the environmental review process for Category C projects under the approved Class Environmental Assessment Process for ORC Realty Activities (1995).Marshall Macklin Monaghan (MMM) has been retained by the ORC to conduct the Environmental Study Report. Input from members of the public is very important in the development of this Report. The purpose of this Open House will be to explain the Class EA process. Additional meetings will be held later in the year to show the undertaking and alternatives for this project. Heat Keeping an eye on the local sporting scene News Advertiser ..Read by more people in your community than any other newspaper Metroland Durham Region Media Group Scoreboard AUGUST 18, 2004 Ajax man shares his artistic background with others By Mike Ruta Staff Writer AJAX – Patrick Hickman believes in giving something back - and the Ajax artist doesn't stop at teach- ing young art enthusiasts. "It's not enough just to provide instruction," he says. "You have to, when you leave the class, follow through on it and get them some exposure." Like a father, Mr. Hickman is proud of his pupils when they show work at, for example, the Robert McL aughlin Gallery in Oshawa. Another student illustrated a chil- dren's book. "I call them my kids," he says, adding it keeps him "young at heart" to work with young artists. When he's not giving lessons in places like Ajax, at a school or at the Seven Mile Island Resort in Port Perry, Mr. Hickman finds time for his own work. "I like to sketch and paint things around me," he says, adding his style isn't realistic, but leans more towards impressionism. Roughly 25 of his works, pen and ink drawings, oils and water- colours, are on display until the end of the month at the Ajax Public Li- brary's main branch, in the Rotary Room. One piece is a pen and ink drawing of an old barn in White- vale, one of many rural scenes that are "disappearing fast" from our landscape. Born in Portadown, Ireland, Mr. Hickman attended an arts and technology college and liked to go to the dockyards for subject mat- ter. His father was a military man, so the family moved around a lot, in- cluding a seven-year stint in West Germany, near two Canadian mili- tary bases. When he commented to a Winnipeg soldier that the Canadi- ans were very nice, the reply was, "we're all like that" so he decided that Canada would be a good place to live. "Even though I was young, I was greatly impressed by those people," Mr. Hickman says of the service- men. Tired of all the unrest in his trou- bled home country, he moved to To r onto, working as a designer for the Timothy Eaton company. After a decade or so in the big city, he moved to Ajax when it was a small- er and quieter place than it is now. "Eight years ago I was asked by the Town of Ajax if I wanted to teach art to young people and I said, 'of course,' he says. Mr. Hickman hit it off with his students, and has gone on to teach for the City of Pickering and at the Markham Montessori School, among other places. He hopes his variety of "Canadian scenes" jog the viewer's memory when people look at his work. "If somebody goes in and they get satisfaction out of looking at some- thing that reminds them of a time gone by or a place they've been, I get satisfaction," says Mr. Hick- man. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER,WEDNESDAY EDITION, August 18, 2004 PAGE B3 A/P Arts &Entertainment WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 18, 2004 ✦ News Advertiser ✦ DAVID STELL, NEWS EDITOR, 905-683-5110 EXT. 249 IN THE WIND Ly dian ensemble seeks new blood... The Herongate Barn Dinner The- atre presents 'Cole', which runs until Sept. 11 with only 12 shows. The music and dance revue fea- tures 35 of the legendary compos- er's pieces, including favourites 'In the Still of the Night', 'I've Got You Under My Skin' and 'Night and Day.' "It is good for all ages but partic- ularly good for people who are fa- miliar with the songs of Cole Porter," said Steve Graham, the ex- ecutive producer and co-owner of Herongate. "It's so well staged with great dancing and great staging that anybody who loves musicals will enjoy it." The show features seven talented performers, Lorraine Green-Kimsa as director and choreographer, and Judy Scott-Jacobs as musical direc- tor. Graham said Green-Kimsa ap- proached him to include the musi- cal in the fall season, which coincid- ed with the release of a movie about Porter earlier this summer, 'De- Lovely'. He said he wasn't aware of the movie when the show was se- lected. The musical 'Cole' first opened on Broadway in 1974 and Graham said this is an updated version. He said it is fitting it is playing at Heron- gate 30 years after opening on Broadway, as it is the theatre's 30th anniversary. "It promises to be a fun show," he said. Cole runs Friday and Saturday evenings with matinees Wednes- days. For more information, call 905- 472-3085 or visit www.herongate.com. The new facility will be located on the site of the Iroquois Sports Complex within the municipal block bounded by Henry, Victoria, Gordon street and Hwy. 401. The building is to be approximately 110,000 square feet and house sports, recreation, rehabilitation services and office space. There are tennis courts (which will be relocated) presently on the proposed site. It is the intention of the Board of Directors that the Abilities Centre will be an international centre of excellence in recreation and rehabilitation program delivery and a model of what is possible in barrier free access. The successful architect will be responsible for developing a detailed space and building program and the complete design of the facilities including the retention of all engineering consultants and a landscape architect. Your Expression of Interest should be limited to five pages, plus resumes and any promotional brochures and project sheets. Submissions must contain a complete profile of qualifications; experience with barrier free design; resume and roles of key staff members; a list of proposed sub-consultants; references plus any other pertinent information that will allow a fair assessment of your firm’s ability to undertake the work. Submissions clearly referencing this project will be received at the Abilities Centre Office at the address below until 2:00 p.m. local time, Thursday, August 26, 2004. Late submissions will be returned unopened. Ten (10) copies of your Expression of Interest must be provided in a sealed envelope. Evaluation of the Expressions of Interest submissions will allow the Board to develop a short list of Architects who will be requested to submit detailed proposals. No designs or concept drawings are to be submitted during the EOI stage. No fees are to be paid for participation in the EOI process. Background documents for the project as well as list of the evaluation criteria are available for review at the Abilities Centre office. On behalf of the Abilities Centre I thank you for your interest, and should you require additional information please contact us at 905-430-4343.
