Email: service@pickeringhonda.com Woman pleads for information in shooting death of her son By Jeff Mitchell Staf f Writer DURHAM –The mother of a young man who was gunned down last spring at a Durham College pub has issued an ap- peal for information that could lead to the arrest of the shooter. “I am begging you, please, to come forward,” Thourla Moses said during a media conference Monday morning at a Whitby police station. “I know how easy it is to sit back and not say anything, or not do anything,” Ms. Moses said. “If we come together we can avoid this happening to an- other family.” Monday morning’s brief comments were the first made publicly by Ms. Moses, who has steadfastly refused to speak to reporters since the April 3 shooting that claimed the life of her son, Eu- gene “Dwayne” Moses, 21. The Ajax man was among three young men hit when shots were fired in a crowded pub at the north Oshawa campus. Mr. Moses, an accom- plished rugby player and a former Durham student, had attended an athletic awards banquet earlier in the evening. He died in hospital days after the shooting. Police continue to closely guard information surround- ing the case, the only one of five murders in Oshawa this year in which an arrest has yet to be made. Durham Regional Police homicide Detective James Stewart-Haass and Deputy- Chief Chuck Mercier released a picture of a “person of inter- est” Monday morning, but re- fused to say where the securi- ty camera pictures were taken, or when. The young black man, be- lieved to be of average height with a muscular build, is among several people police consider “key” to the investi- gation, Det. Stewart-Haass said. “I won’t get into how impor- tant this person is,” the homi- cide cop said Monday. “I do want you to know he is key. “I think there’s somebody out there who can say, ‘I do know this person.’” Police have released two photographs of the man, one in which he is seen wearing a jacket depicting a bear’s head and emblazoned with the words “North American Griz- zly Bear”. In the second photo, the man is seen wear- ing a shirt with the name “Jor- dan” across the back and a large number “23.” Also considered persons of interest in the investigation are a number of young men who were arrested shortly A mother’s appeal for answers A.J. Pickering home to hero Jan de Vries a recipient of France’s highest honour By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PIC KERING – It was just after midnight, June 6, 1944 when Jan de Vries landed on the beaches of Normandy. A member of the 1st Cana- dian Parachute Battalion, he was just 20 years old. The unit’s job was to clear the way for the land troops that would arrive after them. The aircraft pilots, fighting off heavy enemy fire, scat- tered many of the para- troopers away from their planned destinations. Of the 120 men in his company, Mr. de Vries said only 35 men landed in the field. “I spent the whole night trying to find out where I was,” he said. “I was six miles from where I was sup- posed to be and it was black- er than the ace of spades.” He eventually found out where he was and the re- duced battalion did com- plete all its objectives by mid-day. The battalion then dug a trench to get ready for the battle that ensued. Recently, the Pickering resident was bestowed France’s highest honour for the actions he took in that battle so many years ago. Mr. de Vries received the Legion of Honour from French President Jacques Chirac on those same beach- es of France at the ceremony to commemorate the 60th anniversary of D-Day. Sever- al Canadians received the honour, but Mr. de Vries was the only one presented with his in France. “It’s quite an honour be- cause I was selected to rep- resent all of the veterans of Canada,” he said. There are five grades of the order, created by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, and Mr. de Vries received the Chevaliers order. Although most would say Mr. de Vries and the men who fought with him in the war were heroes, he said he was just doing his job. “You only did what needed to be done,” he said. “I al- most feel a little embar- rassed that you get this at- tention for what had to be done. He did enjoy being in France for the anniversary. “It was a tremendous cere- mony,” he said. “The French went all out to put on a good show.” His wife Joanne agreed. She watched with pride as her husband received the honour and was then con- gratulated by Prime Minis- ter Paul Martin and then Minister of Defence John McCallum.Ron Pietroniro/ News Advertiser photo Pickering veteran Jan de Vries received a special honour recently, when he was awarded the Legion of Ho- nour from French President Jacques Chirac. ✦See Six page 2 ✦See de Vries page 2 Accused remains in custody Red light proposal gets green light Mayors like idea of municipally-run camera system By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING – Local politi- cians welcomed the an- nouncement yesterday that they can install red-light cameras on streets in Ajax and Pickering. “It’s a move that would benefit Ajax without ques- tion. We all, all of us council- lors, get calls and the major- ity of my calls are about dri- ving - running red lights, stop signs, speeding,” said Woman killed in Pickering crash DURHAM – A man charged with impaired driving caus- ing death in a Pickering crash will remain in custody after being denied bail. Michael Willie, 37, of North Bay, consented to his contin- uing detention during a brief hearing in an Oshawa bail court yesterday. His next court appearance is Aug. 24. Mr. Willie was charged after a collision around 6:50 p.m. July 10 involving two cars at the intersection of Twyn Rivers Drive and Woodview Avenue in Picker- ing’s west end. Camille Catherine Alexander, 36, of Nor th York, died of injuries sustained in the crash. Her seven-week-old daughter was injured and required treat- ment at Sick Children’s Hos- pital in Toronto. Mr. Willie is charged with impaired driving causing death and three counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm; dangerous dri- ving causing death and three counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm, and dri- ving while exceeding the legal blood-alcohol limit.✦See Cameras page 6 “It was an amazing ceremony,” she said. “The timing was impecca- ble.” Mr. de Vries believes he was cho- sen to receive the award in France because of the work he has done on veterans’ issues. He has served as the president of the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion for nine years and was instrumental in the cre- ation of the Juno Beach Centre. He spends much of his time mak- ing speeches to cadets and other groups. However, Mr. de Vries did not ini- tially sign up to fight overseas dur- ing the Second World War. “I mostly waited because my mom said one son was enough,” he said. But once many of his friends had enlisted and after he saw members of the battalion walking in Toronto he knew he was going to sign up and he knew for what unit. “They were the smartest looking troops he’d seen,” he remembered. “Not that I knew what I was getting into but they looked great so that was enough.” So in February of 1943 he enlist- ed. He was 19 years old. As he talks about the war and the honours he has received he remains composed. He said he’s reached the point after talking about it for so many years where it doesn’t get to him. What does get to him is thinking about those who didn’t make it home. “When I go into the cemeteries and see the names of fellows I get emotional,” he said. “Just thinking about it I get emotional. “The hardest part is thinking about the ones who are not here,” he said, with emotion creeping into his voice. While in France for the D-Day an- niversary, Mr. de Vries visited a town where a plaque was unveiled to honour six Canadians who lost their lives trying to liberate the country. He has returned to France many times over the years for such occasions. “We get a real warm welcoming returning to France,” said his wife. “Over the years the association has developed friendships. It’s like re- turning to friends.” P PAGE 2 NEWS ADVERTISER,WEDNESDAY EDITION, August 11, 2004 www.durhamregion.com Who always delivers to YOUR HOME in Rain, Snow, Extreme Cold or Heat?........YOUR NEWS ADVERTISER CARRIER! The six men were originally charged with attempted murder and aggra- vated assault, charges that were eventually dropped. A number of lesser charges such as breach of pro- bation and obstructing police have been dealt with in the courts, re- porters were told Monday. But those six men, who were ar- rested as they rode in a limousine that left the pub after the shooting, remain central to the investigation, Det. Stewart-Haass said. “They’re all key to the investiga- tion,” he said. “They will remain key to the investigation.” The widely-publicized event at the pub, in the college’s Student Centre building on Simcoe Street North, had attracted a number of non-stu- dents, reporters were told. Witnesses who were at the scene told reporters a shoving match in- volving several young men led to shots being fired. One of the men who was wounded, a 23-year-old Os- hawa resident, was working as a bouncer that night. Police called Monday’s press con- ference to appeal for more informa- tion in the murder probe. “It’s imperative we receive the as- sistance of the public in solving crimes, especially one of this magni- tude,” Det. Stewart-Haass said. He was quick to add, however, the case is not at a dead end. Witnesses at the pub the night of the shooting have been co-operative and investi- gators have followed up “hundreds” of leads across Ontario and in Que- bec, he said. “All investigations go in stages,” Det. Stewart-Haass said. “The original stage looked hope- ful,” he said, referring to the quick arrest of suspects and laying of charges that were eventually dropped. “Instead of having a quick arrest it’s going to take time,” Det. Stewart- Haass said. Deputy-Chief Mercier expressed confidence the murder will be solved. “Durham Regional Police is com- mitted to solving this crime,” he said. “All major criminal investigations are solved with the help of the public and our community.” Mr. Moses was a promising young man who left behind a grieving mother and younger sister, reporters were told Monday. “You have taken a loving, caring son from me,” Ms. Moses said, aim- ing her comments at the person who pulled the trigger. De Vries passing on wisdom to cadets ✦ De Vries from page 1 ✦ Six from page 1 Missing Claremont dog leads owner on a wild rescue ride By Crystal Crimi Staff Writer CLAREMONT –When show dog Abby escaped from a veterinary clinic to take a walk on the wild side, she took many Durham residents on an adven- ture as well. Hiking through the woods, going on the radio, and even renting a heli- copter, Abby’s owner, Claremont resi- dent Karen Straghan, did everything she could to find her dog last week. What she hadn’t expected was how selflessly many residents gave of themselves to help find her beloved pet. “There was probably a lot of helpers and Good Samaritans we didn’t even know about,” said Ms. Straghan. “It just was warming to know all these people helped.” Abby, an Irish wolfhound, also known by her show name ‘Champion Taliesin’s Alchemy Wand of Ulster’, escaped from the Uxbridge Veterinar- ian Clinic after being spayed last month. Ve terinarian Dr. Fred Cotie said when animals are spayed or neutered, afterwards they are put on a blanket on the floor so they can be watched while recovering from anesthesia. While an employee was checking other patients, Abby woke up and made a “beeline” for the door, he said. “It’s my understanding the door was closed, but not hooked,” said Dr. Cotie. Someone had left the building and shut the door, but it didn’t catch, even though it appeared to be closed from the inside, he said. “It was definitely an unfortunate set of circumstances that came to- gether to allow the animal to get out,” Dr. Cotie added. When Ms. Straghan arrived to pick her up about 30 minutes later, she was frantic to find out Abby had escaped. With her sister Marie Straghan, she began looking for the dog. “We basically searched the bush until nightfall,” said Ms. Straghan. Door to door, she asked people if they had seen Abby, crying some- times while she did. She also stuffed mailboxes with flyers announcing Abby’s absence and with a picture of the large 160-pound dog. Along the way, she began seeing other people also looking, slowly driving their cars and yelling Abby’s name into forested areas. Ms. Straghan looked until after midnight, gathering helpers while she did. She finally returned home around 1 a.m. At 4 a.m. she began searching again. Even more supporters had joined the search through forest and woods, but Ms. Straghan returned home again without Abby. The following morning, growing in- creasingly concerned for Abby’s well being, Ms. Straghan went to a radio station to plead for even more help. “A lot of people called and helped not with us, but on their own,” she said. By noon, Ms. Straghan rented a he- licopter for $1,000 in a desperate at- tempt to find her dog. “You can’t put a value on our dogs,” she said. “It was the only way to deal with how many acres of forest.” From the chopper, Abby was spot- ted around 1 p.m. in a swampy clear- ing. They landed the helicopter in someone’s backyard, and searched the wetlands for more than two hours. But it was a phone call from some- one who spotted the dog on a front lawn that finally did the trick. Ms. Straghan headed to Old Stouf- fville Road near Brock, and was re- united with Abby at 6:30 p.m. “Dogs are so resilient, I think she’s recuperating quicker than me and my sister,” said Ms. Straghan. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER,WEDNESDAY EDITION, August 11, 2004 PAGE 3 A/P Up to 100% financing Affordable payments Competitive interest rates Talk to one of our friendly lending specialists to discuss a financing plan that works for you. 3-843 King Street W. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 905-728-4628 Make your home work for you! The Irish wolfhound sent the sisters on a wild search for her. My boys of summer are badly missed My kids are away for a week and I am not handling it at all well. When my brother and his wife very kindly offered to take the boys to their cottage for a week, both Suzanne and I thought it was a wonderful idea. With the arrival of Cancer Man, this has been a weird summer to say the least. I was feeling badly that I hadn't the energy to enjoy the season with my kids as I normally do. Rightly or wrongly, I felt like they were getting cheated. I was happy to give them a chance to go somewhere and do some real summer little boy things, stuff like fishing, swim- ming and catching frogs. Sit- ting up late around a campfire, not sitting around the house helping Dad untangle his chemo pump cord. I'm counting on them now en- joying all of those things. What I didn't count on was how much I am missing them. It occurred to me, shortly after they left, that this was the f irst time, in the 12 years since the first one came along, that they have been away from us for more than a day or so. This house, a house suddenly with- out children, seems cavernous. And it's so God-awful quiet. No giggles from the TV room, no squabbles at the dinner table, no little voices talking to each other through the walls of their bedrooms late at night. Suzanne is dangerously close to losing her voice from lack of use. She hasn't screamed at somebody to pick up a wet bathing suit or a pair of muddy sneakers in days. And I can't re- member the last time I tripped over anything or had my bare foot gouged by an errant piece of Lego. It's really depressing. My wife has enough on her plate looking after me, so I have tried to somehow cushion the boys' absence for her. I pee all over the toilet seat, spill drinks on the carpet and I've stopped eating my crusts. I think it's helping a little but it's not the same as having them here. I don't think I've ever taken my children for granted. I've felt, very keenly, from the mo- ment they took their first breaths, that they were, both of them, remarkable and unde- served gifts. But even so, I don't think I really appreciated, until this very lonely week, just how much love and energy they bring into this house and con- sequently into our lives. I also didn't realize how many times in the course of a day, my thoughts run to them. Now, every five minutes, I find myself wondering out loud: "What do you think the boys are doing right now?" "Do you think the boys are up yet?" "Do you think the boys are asleep now?" "I wonder what the boys are doing in this rainstorm?" There are, of course, a few perks to a child free household: We eat when we want to, there's way less laundry and, if one of us was not constantly plagued with the chemo-induced, green- apple-quickstep and feeling like he got hold of a plate of bad chicken wings 24/7, there might even be some serious sex hap- pening. But I have to tell you; I don't like the trade-off. I'm happy my g uys are where they are and I hope they're making memories that will last a lifetime, even without me. But I won't be real- ly happy or even whole, until they're back, squirming in my arms. Sunderland resident Neil Crone, actor-comic-writer, saves some of his best lines for his columns. Editorial In the community Editorials &Opinions WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 11, 2004 ✦ News Advertiser ✦ DAVID STELL, NEWS EDITOR, 905-683-5110 EXT. 249 Letters to the Editor Olympic glory is within reach Durham athletes are on the world stage at the Games This summer's Olympics could truly be one for the ages - for many different reasons. The Olympics are finally returning to the place where they all started nearly 3,000 years ago. At that time, young men from the states of ancient Greece came to- gether at Olympia to compete for the glory of the gods. The return to Athens also celebrates the place where the modern Olympics started back in 1896. Here in Durham Region we have our very own reason to celebrate this Olympics with a sizable crew of fine ath- letes ready to go swifter, higher, stronger in their pursuit of Olympic glory. Leading the way is Pickering's world champion 100 metre hurdler Perdita Felicien, a top contender for Olympic gold. She'll be joined in the women's 100m hur- dles by Whitby native Priscilla Lopes. Anson Henry of Pickering is part of the 4-x-100 metre men's relay team. The Canadian men's baseball team will benefit from the major league experience of Oshawa's Andy Stewart. As well, Uxbridge's Chris Begg will lend his talents to the squad, which is a strong medal contender. Bernard Luttmer of Pickering is participating in the laser class in the sailing events. Port Perry's Ian Roberts will be saddling up as part of Canada's equestrian team. The tremendous work ethic, dedication and sacrifice required to make it to an Olympics is something we can all truly admire. Each of the seven Durham athletes who have met this ultimate test of athletic skill deserve our hearty congratulations and best wishes for the best per- sonal effort they can deliver on the days in which they compete. Whether you are lucky enough to make the trip to Greece to cheer on Canadian athletes or, like most of us, have to view the world's best from the comfort of your liv- ing room, enjoy the next two and a half weeks. The Sum- mer Games come only once every four years. For these Durham stars, all the sweat and effort comes to a head now. May they go faster, higher, stronger. Catch of the day Brittany James, 7, holds up her big catch made with the help of her best friend Kayleigh Morin, 7, at the Morins’ cottage on Rice Lake recently. They caught about 30 fish between them they claim. Kayleigh’s dad snapped this picture of the happy girls, who are each starting Grade 3 at William Dunbar Public School this fall. Gone but not forgotten Private vs. public school debate unequal To the editor: Re: 'Education breakthrough,' July 23. Let's see: students working at their own pace, teaching them- selves, not competing, sitting around talking with teachers. No wonder none of the students in private school want to return to the public system. If private schools are so good, why did the Private School As- sociation of Ontario object so strongly to having their children write the same standardized provincial tests public school children are mandated to write? The real truth of the quality of a private school education in the province of Ontario will never be known until private schools are held to the exact same level of accountability as public schools. Without provin- cial standardized testing of pri- vate schools and public schools alike, parents will never be able to make informed decisions. In the final analysis, parents are responsible for their child's education. If a normally func- tioning child cannot read at his grade level, then the parents must take responsibility. Educa- tion is a service unlike any other. Without active involve- ment and participation of both the student and their parents, especially in the early stages, the chance of success for a stu- dent is reduced. B.L. Lake Whitby Cigarette butt-flickers upsetting To the editor: Not many things are better than driving down the 401 at night and seeing the spark of a cigarette ember bouncing off the highway. Is cigarette butt-flick- ing a new Olympic event? I am personally appalled that smok- ers think they can throw their butts out the window anytime, anywhere. I know all smokers don't do it, but looking on the ground at a drive-through shows me there are hundreds of butts, every day! I didn't realize that ashtrays were an option on cars. I would assume that smokers don't want the mess in their car, so hey, why not just chuck it and someone else can deal with it. People don't throw cigarette butts on the ground at home on your own property, but why do they think it's fair game to flick them out the car window? We all would like to teach our kids not to litter, but how can we when they see adults doing it on the roads every day. Any driver who comes off any 401 exit ramp in Durham and looks around, even for a couple of seconds, knows that the roadside looks like an open-concept garbage can. Great first impression for people coming to our cities. C'mon people, use your com- mon sense and your ashtray. Bob Graham Oshawa Keep a collar on your pooch To the editor: Why is it that people with small dogs think it's OK for the animals to be off the leash. I am tired of walking my dog and have them come running out of nowhere. Even though my dog is bigger, we are both scared. I know there is a law for dogs to be on a leash, why can't peo- ple obey the law? Will it be my fault if my dog defends herself? I hope not. So all you people out there who think it's OK, think twice and take them where there is an off- leash play area. I welcome (the announce- ment).” Transportation Minister Harinder Takhar announced Tues- day the government is giving mu- nicipalities the ability to use red- light camera technology on a per- manent basis for road safety. A pilot project has been ongoing since 2000 in major cities across Ontario, although not in Durham Region. After its first two years, the red- light camera pilot project had re- duced collisions resulting in per- sonal injuries and fatalities by close to seven per cent, the min- istry reported. “In terms of a deterrent, they have proven to be effective and we certainly do have intersections in the City of Pickering that would benefit from the installation,” Pick- ering Mayor Dave Ryan said. He added the City would have to work with the Region of Durham on the endeavour as many inter- sections in the City include both local and regional roads. “It won’t be a decision that would be made unilaterally in Pick- ering,” he said. Durham Region is one of 10 mu- nicipalities that had asked the province to make the pilot project permanent. A red-light camera is comprised of a camera enclosed in a housing unit mounted on a pole at an inter- section. Loops with sensors are embedded in the road to trigger the camera unit as a vehicle ap- proaches the red light. All municipalities choosing to join the red-light camera program would be required to sign opera- tional agreements that include cri- teria such as signage requirements. The Province will hold meetings in the near future with interested municipalities to establish an un- derstanding of the program and address operational issues. Much of the details of the pro- gram have not been released yet, but Mayor Ryan said he believed municipalities would be responsi- ble for the cost of installation of the cameras and then would col- lect any fines issued. “I would anticipate over time the cameras would pay for them- selves,” he said. “This is by no means a tax grab or a revenue gen- erator. This is what it is meant to be - a deterrent.” Cameras not a tax grab, says Ryan ✦ Cameras from page 1 A.J. The boat, carrying three peo- ple, struck rocks and began taking on water. Rescuers pulled at least two people from the water, police said. One of the women on board said the vessel was making room for another boat to exit the harbour when a wave took the boat into the rocks. Popular turtle visiting Pickering Village and his art needs sponsors By David Stell News Editor DURHAM –Here's your chance to contribute to the world of art and become a small part of the world of Franklin the Turtle. The Durham West Arts Centre is looking for benefac- tors to help frame Franklin for a showing of artist Brenda Clark's famous little fictional tur tle. The 'Frame a Franklin' campaign, Angie Littlefield says, is a way for the public to be part of bringing Franklin to the community. "For $100 they get to spon- sor a Franklin work, be recog- nized, keep the frame and get a charitable receipt," she ex- plains. "As well as being a great deal, it shows the world that there is a commitment to the arts in Durham west." The executive director for the centre, Ms. Littlefield is excited about the interactive show that will bring the fa- mous illustrator to Pickering and Ajax for the large display of her works. Littlefield had the difficult task of selecting the final list of Clark's Franklin artwork, from a wide array of choices. It was no easy task and Clark, Little- field says, was even surprised at some of the selections. "It was hard to pick and choose," she says. "I was thinking of the children's in- terests and the time of year." The show, which runs Sept. 23 to Oct. 22, features 80 drawings and watercolours from various Franklin books mounted at two heights. The child's perspective will be a few feet off the floor so that young people may appreciate the detail in each colourful painting. At adult height, the focus is on the evolution of a Franklin story from the start to a finished product. "I think children are going to be so excited to see these works," Littlefield says. DURHAM –It's time once more for all that jazz - and blues. The Oshawa Jazz and Blues Festival is ready with a schedule of great music in the downtown this week, in- cluding the free, daylong Big Event on Saturday, Aug. 14. Playing a major role in this year's festival, is Jack de Keyzer, a Juno award winner for his blues album, '6 String Lover.' He'll open and close the festival. The Whitby resident is happy to have such a large role in this year's festival. "I haven't really played in the area for quite a while so it will be nice to play at the festival," he said. "It's going to be a family thing too. My kids can come out and see what their dad does for a liv- ing, which is nice for a change." The Big Event kicks off at 11 a.m. in Memorial Park with kids' blues musician LP Camozzi, a former Oshawa resident, followed by local entertainers Marty and the Mojos at 1 p.m., the Bruce Gorrie Quartet with Donny Satin at 3 p.m. and Andy Earle Band at 5 p.m. Jaymz Bee and the Royal Jelly Or- chestra take to the stage at 7 p.m. followed by de Keyzer's revue at 9 p.m. For a detailed schedule, in- formation and tickets for paid events, go to www.os- hawajazzandbluesfestival.co m. Felicien, 23, had a little something to prove in her second appearance at the prestigious meet, which represented her f inal tune-up prior to the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens, start- ing this Friday. Last year, she was rele- gated to the women's 100- metre hurdles 'B' event, owing to the fact she wasn't a known quan- tity at that time. Soon after her victo- ry there she went on to capture gold at the IAAF World Outdoor Track and Field Championship in France. This year, however, she was deter- mined to show meet organizers the error of their ways a year ago. She showed, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that she's an 'A'-calibre hurdler. Felicien blazed to her sixth victory in a row, winning the 'A' title in 12.52 sec- onds. U.S. hurdler Melissa Morrison fin- ished second in 12.60, followed by Glory Alozie of Spain in third in 12.62. Conspicuous by her absence was U.S. hurdler and Felicien rival Gail Dev- ers, who apparently shunned competi- tion leading up to Athens in favour of training at her American home base. "Last year, I won the 'B' race here and became world champion. This year, I won the 'A' race, so I hope to be the Olympic champion," Felicien told the meet's Web site. "I'm satisfied with my time. It's my second best. For Olympic gold, I think I would need to run a low 40s or even 30s." Her personal best — 12.46 seconds — represented a new Canadian record for the 100m hurdles. She set the mark — the fastest time in the world this year — at the Prefontaine meet in Eugene, Oregon in June. Prior to the meet, Felicien says she was looking forward to competing in Zurich, owing to the crowds and its sig- nificance on the track and field calendar. "It's the biggest meet on the circuit. It doesn't get any bigger than Zurich. People come from all across Europe to see it. It's standing room only. So I'm re- ally excited about going back there," she said. She's now headed with other Cana- dian track and field Olympians to a train- ing camp in Grosseto, Italy before land- ing in Athens. The Olympic women's 100m hurdles get started on Aug. 22, with the prelimi- nary rounds. The semifinals go Aug. 23 and the final is Aug. 24. NOTES: Felicien may not be the Canadian flag-bearer at the opening cer- emonies this Friday, but she appears to be the face of Canadian Olympians. She was featured on the cover of this week's Time Magazine's Canadian edition and MacLean's magazine. She was also on the cover of the Toronto Star's Starweek Magazine. Ajax-Pickering drops two straight to lose semifinal series By Al Rivett Sports Editor DURHAM —A PA announcer's miscue proved prophetic for the Ajax-Pickering Rock senior 'B' lacrosse team on Friday night. Following that evening's disap- pointing 8-4 playoff loss at the Pick- ering Recreation Complex to the Owen Sound Woodsmen, the Rock announcer mistakenly signed off with a "see-you-next-year" com- ment. It was an unfortunate oversight as the Rock were still alive in the best-of-five semifinal series, with a winner-take-all Game 5 on the hori- zon in Owen Sound Saturday night and a chance to move on to the On- tario Lacrosse Association senior 'B' championship series. As it turned out, the announce- ment proved correct: the Ajax- Pickering Rock will have to wait until next season for a chance to reach the league championship se- ries, after the club bowed out of the series with a 12-5 road loss in Game 5 at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre. The Woodsmen now play the first-year Barrie Lakeshores in the best-of-five league championship series, which gets under way to- morrow (Thursday) in Owen Sound. Ajax-Pickering Rock head coach Paul St. John acknowledges disap- pointment in his team's failure to close out the series. "Friday was our night. We had a chance to close it out, but we could- n't do it," says St. John. A weary Rock squad stayed with the Woodsmen for the first period on Saturday, leading 2-1. Owen Sound, however, took over in the second period and continued to take it to the Rock well into the third, scoring 10 consecutive goals to open up an 11-2 advantage. Goal- tender Mike Miron was given the hook in the final period after the eighth Owen Sound goal, with Jay Preece taking over. Nick Trudeau scored twice for Ajax-Pickering, while Joel Johnson, Jaime Lumsden and captain Jim Veltman netted singles. Friday's home loss was a case of Murphy's Law. To wit, whatever could go wrong, did go wrong for the Rock. Undisciplined penalties, unchar- acteristic uneven play and an Owen Sound squad bent on taking the se- ries back to that Bruce Peninsula city 24 hours later all conspired to undermine the Rock's efforts to end the series before a large home crowd. The Rock lost key performer Pat Vanhooser to a leg injury in the sec- ond period, which seemed to de- f late Ajax-Pickering to a further de- gree. To add insult to injury, not even the shot clock would co-operate. The clock stopped working in the second period, resulting in a lengthy delay while temporary clocks were scrounged up and hastily installed. The uninspired play didn't go un- noticed by St. John following Fri- day's game. A visibly upset head coach took his players to task for taking bad penalties, and not rising to the occasion. "I'm flabbergasted that we've al- lowed this to happen. I'm a little shocked at the guys," says St. John. The Rock trailed 2-1 after the f irst period and fell behind 3-1 early in the second before two consecu- tive goals by Bill McLean, on a spectacular solo effort, and Nick Trudeau squared the score. A rare soft goal against Miron, who made the stop, only to have the ball trick- le past him into the net, put Owen Sound in front to stay. The Woodsmen led 4-3 after two periods and added three consecu- tive goals in the third to take a commanding 7-3 lead. Trudeau scored his second goal of the night at the 9:32 of the third but, 21 sec- onds later, the Woodsmen reinstat- ed their four-goal advantage. Shawn Summerfield scored the other Rock marker.
