Women look for

the political scene
This is the third in a four-part

DURHAM -They can be counted
on one hand.
Sherry Senis, Eileen Higdon,
Beverley Morgan, Norah Stoner
and Peggy Byers. These are the
five women who have sat on
Pickering council since 1976.
During the same 11 terms, 23
different men have filled the
seven elected positions.
Women have never been a
prominent fixture in Pickering’s
municipal political scene. There
hasn’t been a woman on council
since Sherry Senis served as
Wa rd 2 local councillor during
the 1994 to 1997 term, and only
two women ran in the last elec-
tion, but incumbents defeated
both.
Ms. Senis never really looked
at politics in gender terms, but
as the lone female on council,
said it was sometimes difficult.
“It was challenging at times,”
she said. “I would sometimes
bring a different perspective to
the table and then I would have

PICKERING – All signs point to
Wa rd 2 City Councillor Bill
McLean taking over the regional
seat left vacant by recently elect-
ed Ajax-Pickering MP Mark Hol-
land.
Mr. Holland officially took fed-
eral office July 13, leaving his
Wa rd 2 position vacant.
Coun. McLean is interested in
moving up to the regional level.
“I certainly would be putting
my name forward to fill that posi-
tion,” he said. “If council supports
me I would be willing to take on
the added responsibility.”
Council has the option of filling
the vacancy through an appoint-
ment or a byelection, although
first the seat must be officially de-
clared vacant - which is expected
at the July 26 council meeting.
Wa rd 1 City Councillor Kevin
Ashe is bringing forward a motion
at that meeting to have the re-
gional seat filled with a byelection
- or in the event council appoints
from within, a byelection be held
to f ill the local seat.
“I was concerned that there
were some people on council and
some people in the community
who suggest we do the filling of
the vacancy with an appoint-
ment,” Coun. Ashe said. “I felt
with so much time left in the term
there should be a byelection to let
people decide.”
The next municipal election is
not until November 2006.
Coun. Ashe said he has no
problems with council appointing
from within, but ultimately be-
lieves a byelection should be held
to f ill whatever vacancy remains.
Councillors have received a
memo from the clerk’s depart-
ment detailing the cost of a by-
election, which Coun. Ashe said is
estimated at $80,000.
Coun. McLean said a byelection
is a good idea.
“Democracy should prevail and
elections are the way (to achieve
that). People making decisions
and delegating tax dollars should
be elected not appointed,” he
said.
Coun. Ashe said he has no in-
terest in the regional position be-

DURHAM –Roy Jones was the
target of a plot for months before
he was murdered in February of
2001, a Superior Court of Justice
jury has been told.
Sean Hall, one of the two men
accused of first-degree murder in
the Ajax man’s slaying, told un-
dercover police officers he and
his co-accused, Cosmo Jacobson,
staked out Mr. Jones’s neigh-
bourhood to watch his move-
ments prior to the shooting,
court has heard.
“He talked about how they
were sitting there nights, waiting
for the guy to come home,” said
an undercover cop, whose identi-
ty is protected by a publication
ban.
“I believe (Mr. Hall) mentioned
it took almost three months ... he
was getting frustrated it was tak-
ing so long,” the officer said.
He said Mr. Hall recalled say-
ing to his friend, “Are you going
to do this, or what?”
The officer was the second un-
dercover cop to testify in the
trial, which has been unfolding
over the past couple of months in
front of a jury of eight men and
four women and Superior Court
Justice Donald Ferguson in
Whitby. The trial has heard from
three officers who carried out ex-
tensive undercover work, with
two of them even moving into an
apartment down the corridor
from Mr. Hall’s in a Brantford
building in the summer of 2001.
They presented themselves as
successful criminals.
All three officers have testified
they heard Mr. Hall describe de-
tails of the killing, and the reason
it was carried out.
Mr. Jones, who worked as a se-
curity guard, was to be called as
a witness against Mr. Jacobson,
who was facing several years in
prison on charges relating to a
home invasion robbery that oc-
curred in June of 2000. Mr. Jones,
a casual acquaintance of Mr. Ja-
cobson’s, saw Mr. Jacobson when
he tried to use a credit card
stolen during the home invasion
to withdraw cash from an auto-
mated teller machine, court has
heard.
It is the Crown’s theory that
Mr. Jones was slain to keep him
from testifying against Mr. Ja-
cobson.
Under questioning by Crown
attorney Paul Murray, the under-
cover officer told the jury Mr.
Hall explained why the killing
took place.
“Mr. Hall explains to me ...
there was a witness who was
killed because his buddy had
been ratted out,” the officer said,
referring to notes made during
the undercover operation in July
of 2001.
While he admitted concern
over being identified by Durham
homicide cops as a person of in-
terest in the case, Mr. Hall
bragged he was the “brains” be-
hind the plot to kill Mr. Jones,
and that his cool head allowed
him to drive the getaway car
from the murder scene, on Pick-
ering Beach Road in Ajax, even
as police cruisers passed by in re-
sponse to the shooting, the jury
has heard.
The undercover officers, all of
whom described Mr. Hall as re-
markably chatty for someone
trying to elude a murder charge,
have presented some of the most
explosive evidence during the
trial, which began in April.
Paul Burstein, Mr. Hall’s de-
fence lawyer, has attempted to
counter that evidence by por-
traying his client as trying to im-
press men he thought were suc-
cessful criminals by bragging
about the murder. He has point-
ed to a number of inconsistencies
in Mr. Hall’s description of the
killing and the actions he took to
get rid of evidence, including a
.45 calibre handgun and bullets,
after the homicide.
It was originally anticipated all
of the evidence in the case would
be presented prior to the trial
going on hiatus in August. But
last week, Justice Ferguson told
jurors the case for the defence is
likely not to begin until Septem-
ber, and that the trial could
stretch past October.

Jones was watched before murder, trial hears
Accused remains in custody
DURHAM –A North Bay man fac-
ing a charge of impaired driving
causing death will spend another
couple of weeks in custody as he
awaits a bail hearing.
Michael Willie said nothing
when he made a brief appearance
in an Oshawa courtroom Friday
morning. The 37-year-old was re-
manded in custody until Aug. 10.
Mr. Willie faces a number of
charges in connection with a colli-
sion July 10 in Pickering that
claimed the life of 36-year-old
Camille Alexander of North York
and left her six-week-old child in
hospital with serious injuries.
Durham Regional Police said
the Alexander vehicle, which was
westbound on Twyn Rivers Drive,
collided with Mr. Willie’s south-
bound car at the intersection with
Woodview Drive.
Mr. Willie was arrested at Scar-
borough Centenary Hospital
some time after the 6:50 p.m.
crash.
He is charged with impaired
driving causing death, three
counts of impaired driving caus-
ing bodily harm, dangerous dri-
ving causing death, three counts
of dangerous driving causing bod-
ily harm, and driving while ex-
ceeding the legal blood-alcohol
limit.
cause he feels a councillor should live
in the ward they represent.
“I would have no difficulty in sup-
porting Mr. McLean,” he said. “I
would have no problem with him
being appointed to the regional posi-
tion.”
Mayor David Ryan said an appoint-
ment from within is a plausible sce-
nario.
“I’m thinking in all likelihood what
would happen is an appointment
from within council and a byelection
to f ill the local seat,” he said.
Wa rd 3 City Councillor David Pick-
les is not going to be seeking an ap-
pointment the regional position.
“No, I don’t think I’d be interested
in the regional Ward 2 seat,” he said.
He would support Coun. McLean.
City clerk Bruce Taylor said to deal
with Mr. Holland’s departure, council
has to declare his seat vacant at the
next meeting and then it would have
to wait until its next meeting to pass
a bylaw to hold a byelection or to
make an appointment.
Coun. McLean said he would be in-
terested in hearing residents’
thoughts on this issue.
People can register by Friday, July
23 at noon if they want to share their
opinion with council July 26.

Teens charged
with bullying
PICKERING – Two teenagers have
been arrested and charged after a
Pickering teen told police he was bul-
lied and robbed for months.
Police say the bullying began back
in April, when a 15-year-old was ac-
costed by four males wearing bala-
clavas as he walked through a park.
The victim told police the attackers
took items belonging to him, then de-
manded cash for their return.
The teen told police he was bullied
and robbed in a similar fashion on
several occasions after the first inci-
dent. Finally in early June, the youth
had had enough, police said, and
went to Durham Regional Police with
his story.
An investigation led to the arrest of
two 15-year-old Pickering boys on
July 2. One is charged with robbery,
intimidation, wearing a disguise with
intent to commit an indictable of-
fence, three counts of fraud under
$5,000, three counts of conspiracy to
commit an indictable offence, two
counts of counselling to commit an
indictable offence and breach of un-
dertaking. Another youth has been
charged with robbery, extortion,
wearing a disguise with intent to
commit an indictable offence and
breach of probation.
They cannot be named under the
Youth Criminal Justice Act.

leagues to see things my way.”
She decided to run in 1994 after
watching council meetings and
thinking she could bring some-
thing new to the table.
In 1997, Ms. Senis ran for mayor
and lost to incumbent Wayne
Arthurs. She is interested in re-
turning to municipal politics and
would like to see other women in-
volved.
“I applaud the women who use
their civic duty to run in an elec-
tion, but it is almost impossible to
beat an incumbent, especially if
they’re doing their job,” she said.
There were 16 candidates in the
November election, with incum-
bents running in all positions ex-
cept for Ward 1 city councillor.
“It is important for there to be
some diversity on council. I think
you need to have proportional
representation and it provides a
role model for today’s young
women,” said Ms. Senis.
Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan
pointed out women in Pickering
have been involved in the political
process.
“We have had a number of
women who have actively sought
office... so it’s not as if it’s a closed
shop,” he said.
At the same time he recognizes
there have been few women at the
council table.
“We’ve always had and contin-
ue to have the imbalance based
on gender,” he said. “I could sit
here and speculate but it’s not
something I want to do.”
He said there are theories that
the demands placed on women by
society keep them from running
for office. He said times are
changing and that is good for po-
litical diversity.
In municipalities around the
Greater Toronto Area, women
have a strong presence on local
council, including most munici-
palities in Durham Region.
Uxbridge’s Gerri Lynn O’Connor
is in her seventh term as mayor;
Scugog’s Marilyn Pearce was
elected mayor in the last election
after previous terms as a regional
and local councillor; and Os-
hawa’s Nancy Diamond served
four terms as mayor before being
defeated in 2003.
“There are a number of munici-
palities in the GTA, and very sig-
nificant municipalities in the
GTA, that are headed by a female
mayor and where the majority of
council is female,” said Myer
Siemiatycki, a political science
professor at Ryerson University.
In Mississauga, Mayor Hazel
McCallion has been around for 25
years and is currently the head of
a female-dominated council.
Brampton’s mayor is also a
woman and it’s council is made
up of six men and four women.
Across Richmond Hill, Vaugh-
an, Markham, Oakville and every
municipality in Durham - aside
from Pickering - each of the local
councils has some female pres-
ence, although most are male-
dominated.
In Ajax, Town council is made
up of three women and four men,
including Mayor Steve Parish.
But it hasn’t always been that
way.
In her four terms, Ward 4 local
Councillor Pat Brown has served
on councils where she was the
lone female and others where she
wasn’t. Coun. Brown said those
times as the only female represen-
tative, such as last term, were not
significantly different than the
others.
She did say the atmosphere
from last term to now has
changed, but added it is hard to
put her finger on exactly how.
“It’s much more relaxed...
It’s nice to have some-
body you can share things with,”
she said.
Although Coun. Brown doesn’t
believe one sex is better at politics
than the other, she does believe
women bring a different style.
“Being a woman, sometimes
you approach things in a different
way, y ou are less forthright,” she
said.
Even though the numbers on
council are nearly even, Coun.
Brown said the Town realizes
there is still work to be done.
“It’s a concern of council, it’s a
concern of staff that there isn’t
more women councillors or
women (directors),” she said,
adding there are several women
managers, but that they haven’t
made their way up to the level of
director yet. Sharon Meredith
was recently named
interim director of recreation ser-
vices for the Town, while the
search for a permanent director
continues.
At other levels of government
the lack of women is also an issue.
Judi Longfield, newly elected
MP for Whitby-Oshawa, was the
only female member of Parlia-
ment from Durham Region
(when she represented Whitby-
Ajax) before last month’s election.
Now she is joined on the Hill by
Bev Oda, MP for Clarington-Scu-
gog-Uxbridge. They are two of 65
women across Canada elected to
the 308-member legislature. With
women now making up 21.1 per
cent of representa-
tives, that is a 0.2-per cent in-
crease over the last Parliament.
Ms. Longfield served as a coun-
cillor in Whitby before being elect-
ed in 1997. For her, being a woman
was never an issue, but she can
see why women are less active
than men.
“Getting into politics for
women is more difficult from a lo-
gistical point of view. Women are
less inclined to take on or take out
someone they think is doing a
good job,” she said. “Women are
more tasked with raising fami-
lies.”
Her son was in his 20s before
she ran federally.
“I wouldn’t have wanted to
move to Ottawa and be gone half
the year... I think it would have
been extremely difficult. I’m in
awe of women who do that,” she
said.
Ms. Longfield would like to see
more women getting involved, but
only if it’s right for them. She
thinks governments should be
careful of quotas.
“I know women can do a good
job and we need to find ways to
help them,” she said.
Former MPP Janet Ecker, who
represented Pickering-Ajax-
Uxbridge, is a strong supporter of
getting more women involved in
politics. (Currently, all Durham
MPPs are men, with the excep-
tion of Laurie Scott in Brock
Township).
“I’m a big believer in (Canada)
needing more strong, talented
women in politics,” said Ms.
Ecker, who held a number of cab-
inet posts while serving in the
Conservative government from
1995 to 2003, including her time as
finance minister.
She is a member of Equal Voice,
a national group of women advo-
cating to get more women in of-
fice. It’s goal for the recent federal
election was to have women make
up one-third of the members
elected.
Ms. Ecker doesn’t believe there
should be artificially set targets,
rather she is supportive of strate-
gies that encourage, train and aid
women in politics.
She mentors young women
who want to get involved, and
some of the women who worked
with her during her eight years at
Queen’s Park were candidates in
the federal election.
“One of the reasons it’s impor-
tant to have more women in poli-
tics is because we do look at the
world differently. It doesn’t mean
we look at things better or worse
than a male politician does but
we do make decisions in a differ-
ent way.
“In a democratic society if you
are interested in representing
your constituents, increasing fe-
male representation is really im-
portant.”

Part 4: What the future holds.
Tackling gender barriers
Women aim to make a bigger impact on the
political landscape in Ajax and Pickering
Ron Pietroniro/ News Advertiser photo
Among the advantages to having increased female representation at the political level, says longtime Ajax councillor
Pat Brown, is the different perspective that can be offered.

My feet perspire a great deal, and I find myself
with itchy feet that always crack between the toes.
My friends at the health club tell me I have an
athlete’s foot problem. Do you think I do, and
what can I do to stop or prevent it from recurring?
Your friends are right. It does, indeed sound as
if you do have athlete’s feet (TINEA PEDIS).
First, I must tell you that you don’t need to be
an athlete to develop this skin condition. It is
caused by a fungus which flourishes is a warm,
dark, moist environment. As feet may perspire
more with athletics, there may be a slightly higher
incidence of athlete’s feet in people who
participate in sports.
Athlete’s f eet can occur in the healthiest of
people with the best feet. It is usually not
contagious unless the proper conditions to ensure
its growth exist.
The area itself often has a reddish line with
flaking, whitish skin, which peels or sloughs off.
This is nature’s way of trying to rid the body of
the fungus. The most common areas are between
the toes.
There are many ways to try and prevent the
problem from occurring The best is to avoid
walking barefooted in areas such as health clubs,
swimming pool decks and common shower areas.
Always wear shower shoes.
Secondly, you should keep the environment of the
foot as dry as possible. Wear cotton or wool socks,
not nylon, polyester or rayon. Natural fibres breath,
and therefore, keep the foot dryer. Also, wear shoes
that are made of leather or canvas. S hoes that are
made to keep water out will keep perspiration in.
Dr y your feet well after every bath or shower,
especially between the toes. Putting socks on a foot
already wet from the shower will hasten the
occurrence of the athlete’s feet. Always put your
socks on first when getting dressed, even before your
underwear. This will prevent the spread of the
fungus to the groin, which is also a warm, dark, moist
environment.
Sometimes the nails may also become infected by
the fungus. They thicken and become yellow. There
is a tendency of the nails to reinfect the foot, so flare-
ups are usually only temporarily controlled by
medication. Once the fungus gets a “foot hold” on
the nails, it is difficult to eliminate the problem.
Tr eatment of an athlete’s foot problem involves:
(1) Don’t scratch the area, as you will spread the
infection.
(2) Keep the area dry, cool and in the light as much
as possible.
(3) Wear socks and shoes made of natural
materials.
(4) Keep feet covered in public areas.
(5) Over the counter creams and/or powders may
help milder infections, as well as soaking the feet in
tepid saline salt water.
(6) Prescription creams or orals may be prescribed
for more chronic conditions.
(7) If a secondary bacterial infection occurs (misery
loves company), that will also inflame the area - then
a cortisone or an antibacterial cream may be
prescribed.
Usually fungal infections are easily controlled, but
they can recur if the conditions needed by the fungus
are met. It seems that some people are more prone to
these problems. Remember, you don’t need to be an
athlete to develop athlete’s feet.

Cost to repair
damaged work
is $1,700
PICKERING – A statue
damaged last month has
been returned to its new
home.
The piece of art, which
had been donated to the
City several years ago, had
been placed in the north-
west corner of French-
man’s Bay East Progress
Park shortly before it was
vandalized June 5.
The statue, by K.S. Oliv-
er, made of metal about
half-an-inch thick, was
bent over by the vandals.
“It’s been repaired and
reinstalled as of this morn-
ing,” Everett Buntsma, the
City of Pickering’s director
of operations, said Tues-
day.
The statue was sent to a
metal fabricating shop to
be repaired at a cost of
$1,700.
“We’ve put some bracing
under it for extra sup-
port,” Mr. Buntsma said.
“It’s looking pretty good.”
The City is covering the
cost of the repairs for now
- a resident who read
about the incident called
to offer to help, but Mr.
Buntsma said they haven’t
taken him up on his offer
yet. The City wants to see
if it will receive any reim-
bursement, if the police
can identify the culprits
and they are convicted. No
one has been charged at
this point.
The piece of art was re-
turned to the park just in
time for its official opening
Tuesday evening.
Mr. Buntsma said no
fencing or barriers have
been installed around the
statue.
“We’re hoping that won’t
be necessary,” he said.
“Hopefully they’ve (the
vandals) learned their les-
son and it won’t happen
again.”

FAMILY BOWLING AT GREAT SUMMER PRICING!!!
It’s difficult to establish benchmarks and to
comparison shop for a home renovator because peo-
ple don’t shop for one as often as they shop for items
such as shoes.
Sam Beninato of Plumbing Mart says that a
home renovation project should be a well thought
out decisions. It could cost thousand of dollars and
will affect your family for many years so enlisting
the help of an expert is key.
The first step is information gathering. Visit
showrooms, websites and publications to learn what
products are available on the market. Get an
overview and then narrow it down to what you real-
ly want.
“The next step is having a face-to-face meet-
ing with a specialist, not a generalist,” says Sam.
“It’s important to work with a person you feel com-
fortable with. A rapport has to be established as well
as a bond of trust”
HIRE A SPECIALIST
General contractors usually have the skill to
oversee an entire project and often contract out spe-
cific parts of it.
Specialists focus on one trade. They do it
day-in, day-out. They usually work faster because
there is no learning curve and they are dedicated to
the work at hand.
Sam says that consumers should look for spe-
cialists such as those at Plumbing Mart, who can
give them exact start dates, progress time and a sub-
stantive completion date.
“Buyers should be careful about vague time-
lines,” he said. “If you’re told that a contractor can
start work in July, does that mean at the beginning of
July or a the end of the month? Your life could be
turned upside down for a whole month.”
Consumers should also ask how long a con-
tractor has been in business. A contractor that just
started his business may have great intentions, but
may not be able to respond appropriately if an
unforeseen problem is encountered.
“Plumbing Mart has been in business for
more than 40 years. If there is a problem we can
make five phone calls and come up with five differ-
ent solutions.”
An established specialist will also have expe-
rienced several home renovating trends throughout
the years and come with its own innovations.
WARRANTY
Wa r ranty is a key point. Always ask if it cov-
ers the product, service, labour, or all three. If a
bathtub comes with a manufacturer’s warranty only,
will your contractor remove it at no cost so that you
can claim your warranty from the manufacturer? Is
the cost of labour going to be charged to you? Only
a specialist that stands behind all facets of its work
can give consumers the peace of mind that they
deserve.
IT’S YOUR DREAM
When telling your chosen renovator about
your dream room, will that person follow your agen-
da or his? A good renovator should be able to think
outside the box and have the resources to deliver
what you want. Once you have agreed on an idea,
that renovator should shop for all parts needed to
complete the job.
Ensure that your renovator also commits to
disposing of garage and to leaving your home clean
so that your family can start to enjoy the newly ren-
ovated kitchen or bathroom right away.

If life were perfect, every child would
sail through the school year without any
difficulties. But in the real world some
kids do need a little extra help to
achieve academic success.
One organization helping kids to do this
is the Pickering-based Grade
Expectations Learning Centre.
“Simply put, we specialize in helping
students achieve academic success,”
says the centre’s director and owner,
Rosana Gardner. “However, we do a lot
more than that.”
Each student is given a comprehensive
academic assessment to determine his
or her individual needs and abilities.
From there, Grade Expectations will
develop a program that is tailor-made
for your child, addressing his or her
needs. The small classroom setting—
only three children per session, only
two for senior high school math and
science—also ensures that the student
receives individualized attention from
the teacher.
“Our teachers are very instructional,”
explains Ms. Gardner. “We don’t just
give our students sheets of papers with
instructions to follow.”
The programs, which are taught by
qualified teachers only, are comprised of
two one-hour sessions per week and
will change to accommodate the
changing needs of the child. In addition
to implementing a child’s program,
Grade Expectations also offers
homework support during the school
year. There also is no minimum time
commitment as enrollment is renewed
each month.
Ms. Gardner points out that it is very
important to continue with academic
support throughout the summer
months. This ensures that concepts are
retained and not forgotten.
“Continuing to learn in the summer
months gives the student(s) the edge
when starting their new class year.”
Grade Expectations Learning Centre has
been helping Ajax-Pickering students
achieve academic success since 1995.
They offer learning programs for
students in Grades 1 to 12. For more
information call 905-420-9930 or visit
them at 1885 Glenanna Rd., Suite 103,
Pickering.

Put on your dancing shoes this summer
By: Alicia Veloce
The town of Pickering will be on their
feet this summer as The Durham Dance
Centre hosts a week of non-stop dancing
and excitement.
From August 9 to the 13, six spectacular
teachers from around the globe will be
brought into The Durham Dance Centre
to pass on their expertise and add a little
flare to our fair city. All guest teachers
have danced at a professional capacity,
ranging from choreographers of the
Junos or the Las Vegas production of
Cirque de Sole.
This summer camp, head by owner and
director, Tammy Roberts, is a wonderful
opportunity for existing students to learn
a new form of dance or to prepare for
upcoming September training. It is also
great chance for beginners to take a
lesson.
The week is filled with instructional
teachings of tap, jazz, ballet, musical
theatre, acrobatics, pilates and hip hop.
Classes run five times a day and range
from different levels of age groups.
Starting off with the junior level, ages 7
to 9, intermediate, 10 to 13 years and
senior, 14 years and over.
The Durham Dance Centre will be
tapping their way into their 13th year
this September. Director, Tammy Roberts
is pleased to offer recreational and
competitive training in tap jazz, ballet,
acrobatics, musical theatre and hip hop.
Her competitors travel throughout
Canada and the United States. Many of
her students have developed their
dancing career on a professional level;
some performing on cruise ships, music
videos and other at half time shows for
the Toronto Raptors and the Toronto
Blue Jays.
The 7,000 square foot centre has 3
spacious studios with viewing windows,
which makes it easy for parents to see
how well their child is progressing.
Come and enjoy a great week of
dynamic dancing or sign up for a whole
year of training. The Durham Dance
Centre is located at 1755 Plummer St.,
unit 12 in Pickering. For more

PIC KERIN G —The Olympic
dream may have died, but Pick-
ering Swim Club's Laura
Nicholls will continue to train
and swim, at least until next
summer.
The 2005 World Swimming
Championship is coming to
Canada and the 25-year-old
Wa t erloo native is looking for-
ward to the meet, which may
serve as her swansong to inter-
national competition.
"As of right now, I'm not look-
ing to swim through 2008," says
Nicholls, who represented
Canada in the 1996 Olympic
Summer Games in Atlanta and
at the 2000 Games in Sydney. "I
am, however, looking towards
next summer, and world cham-
pionships which are being held
in Montreal."
The sprint freestyle special-
ist's dream of making a third
trip to the Olympics this sum-
mer fell just short of the mark -
- agonizingly so -- while com-
peting at the Canadian
Olympic Trials at Toronto's
Etobicoke Olympium Pool last
weekend.
In the 50-metre freestyle, her
specialty, Nicholls performed
flawlessly, winning the event in
a new Canadian record time of
25.60, breaking her previous
mark of 25.68, set in her heat at
trials. The time, however, was-
n't enough to land her on the
Canadian Olympic team. In
fact, the time was a mere eight
one hundredths of a second off
the Olympic qualifying stan-
dard.
It was with mixed emotions
that she accepted her fate.
"I was happy with my swims
at Olympic trials. To swim as
well as I did in the 50, I couldn't
be upset with the result. It's
just a little frustrating that a
Canadian record isn't good
enough to put you on the
Olympic team," she says.
"Right now I'm a little mad.
But for me that can be good. I'll
just have to swim fast in the fu-
ture to make them wish I was
there."
Nicholls also captured top
spot in the 100m freestyle at the
trials, but her time of 56.43 sec-
onds was also off the Olympic
qualifying time.
"I wasn't as happy with my
10 0, but I gave it everything I
had," she says. "I haven't put to-
gether the 100 the way I have
wanted all year, and knew it
wasn't going to be easy to do at
trials."
Nicholls says she and Lucie
Hewitt-Henderson, the head
coach at the Pickering club, felt
she was fully prepared for the
Canadians.
"I was as ready as I was going
to be for trials. I had done the
work, I'd swam well throughout
the year, it was just a matter of
stepping up and putting to-
gether the necessary swims. I
g uess I just came up a little
short," she says.
She came over to the Picker-
ing Swim Club this season after
leaving the Region of Waterloo
Swim Club to get a fresh start
in a new atmosphere and with a
new coach. She insists her re-
sults at trials doesn't make her
question her decision to leave
her former club.
"Not at all. I swam faster in

wouldn't change that for any-

believe it was a very good
change. Given the choice to do
it again, I would," she says.

PICKERING —Error-free baseball
propelled the Pickering Red Sox
minor bantam 'AAA' rep baseball
team to the Scarborough tourna-
ment crown recently.
In the final, the Sox clinched
the title with a 9-5 victory over
West Hill.
The Pickering bantams ad-
vanced to the championship
game after blasting the Missis-
sauga Majors 10-1.
Pickering began the tourna-
ment by playing to a 2-2 tie with
last year's Ontario Baseball As-
sociation champions from Cam-
bridge. The Red Sox went on to
defeat Wexford 23-0 and Toronto
East 12-0 to advance to the play-
offs.
Throughout the tournament
Pickering's defensive play was
flawless. Infielders Matt St.
Kitts, Adam Carson, Shem
Thomas, Sean Molony and Kevin
Wiggers were extremely sharp
and focused. Catcher Kyle Porter
threw out eight of 11 steal at-
tempts in one game. Red Sox
outfielders Peter Coliccio, Joey
Lang and Matt Marinelli, dubbed
'The Posse', were also a force.
Pitchers Stefan Sawicky, St.
Kitts, Stephen Hunt, Shawn
To mlison and Thomas were defi-
nitely on their game. They al-
lowed only a total of eight runs
scored against them during the
tournament.
Offensively, the players were
uniformly productive at the
plate. Leading the way was
Thomas, who was a perfect 4-for-
4 in one outing, including a
triple. Coliccio added several
doubles throughout the week-
end.
Stephen Holmes cheered the
team on and played in part of the
tournament despite an injury.
Al Boyle, Adrienne St. Kitts
and Kevin Porter coach the
team. The manager is Remo
Marinelli.
