Changing public perception Greater push will be made for community partnerships By Jeff Hayward Special to the News Advertiser AJAX – Raising money alone is not enough, the United Way said this week as it discussed plans to dive deeper into help- ing communities. Al Hatton, president of the United Way Canada-Centraide, was the keynote speaker at the 34th Ajax-Pickering-Uxbridge United Way’s annual general meeting at Victorian Gardens in Ajax. Mr. Hatton praised the local division for raising 7.7 per cent more donations as compared to the previous campaign year, but stated the organization as a whole plans to become more in- volved in the process. “Our mission now is engaging communities and working to- gether... it will be about core val- ues,” said Mr. Hatton. He explained that although the United Way is raising more money across the board - five per cent as a whole in Canada last year - he wants to see more positive results in the areas the funding contributes to. “The focus will be off funding and onto what makes change,” he said. “Instead of band-aid so- lutions, we’re looking for lasting solutions... it’s not about how high we can get the red (United Way) thermometer,” he added, New program designed to take stigma off animal services profession By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING – The Pickering-Ajax- Whitby (PAW) Animal Services committee has a plan to change the public’s perception of animal service workers as evil dogcatch- ers. The PAW committee has creat- ed a responsible pet ownership program for children, as well as a public awareness campaign to help educate the public about what PAW really does. “One of the things this does is promote PAW through the edu- cational system,” said Ward 2 City Councillor Bill McLean. “It educates people about responsi- ble pet ownership and also it lets people know PAW is around and what it is they do.” A member of the PAW commit- tee, Coun. McLean said the com- mittee decided to design the new program as part of the restruc- turing of animal services. Lindsey Brenner was the pro- ject leader. The PAW committee asked her to work on a program for schools, but in doing her research it be- came evident PAW needed to ed- ucate all citizens. “I realized there was a lot more than developing an education process but you have to have the officers out and about in the com- munity, which is why it turned out to be more than just the (school) program,” she said. As part of the responsible pet ownership program, volunteers are to make a presentation to Grades 6, 7 and 8 students telling them what PAW does, the three Rs of owning a pet (responsibility, relationship and respect), and the cost and commitment associ- ated with owning different pets. Advocates worried about board program By Mike Ruta Staff Writer DURHAM – Despite an increase of 29 full-time positions in the draft budget, special education advo- cates are warning there could actu- ally be fewer educational assistants in local public schools next year. Seven of the 10 presenters at Monday’s Durham District School Board budget meeting spoke about special education. “I need you to understand that any decision to reduce educational assistant (EA) support in this bud- get will undoubtedly mean that some families will feel forced into placing their child in a self-con- tained classroom, against their preferences,” said Denyse Newton, who represents the Durham Down Syndrome Association on the board’s special education advisory committee. Marion Moore, the EA chairman for the Canadian Union of Public Employees, in an interview, says 100 full-time equivalent, temporary positions “are gone” next year. “We made a deal with manage- ment that scares me,” she told trustees. “We agreed not to post the temporary positions that exist right now in the schools because management was concerned that the money for special education would be cut, and if these jobs rolled into permanent jobs we’ll be facing layoffs.” Don McLean, the board’s special education superintendent, says the board and CUPE agreed to main- tain 56 casual positions but not post 46 others. That could change, however, “depending on what the f inancial picture turns out to be,” since the board still expects to re- ceive an additional $2.8 million in funding from the Province. L aurie Beaton, Special Educa- tion Advisory Committee (SEAC) chairman, urged trustees “to do your job and continue to lobby the government to ensure that the $2.8 million that we are owed right now will be here now.” Ms. Beaton and Mr. McLean say they can’t find out if and when the money will be released to the board. “Without this money, you will have to make significant cuts,” she said. Mr. McLean agrees, saying if cuts are required “that will be a decision the trustees ultimately make when they approve the budget.” Marlene Avery, president of the Learning Disabilities Association of Durham and a SEAC member, says that, apart from the issue of EAs, she’s asking for “more ac- countability in where the money goes that comes into this board.” As an example, she said she has tried to find out how the Special Education Per Pupil Amount (SEPPA) money from the Province is spent. She was told the general alloca- tion, based on the total number of students in the board, is added to intensive support amount special education money. The problem, says Ms. Avery, is a large number of learning disabled students are not identified, thus they don’t benefit from (Intensive Support Amount) ISA funding. The board’s budget will only be balanced if it receives the special education funding. Special-ed f lags waved over budget DON McLEAN Trustee decision. Closed-door meeting attempts to clear the air By Carly Foster Staff Writer DURHAM – The Mayor of Whitby says the Region should have just come to the Town instead of de- bating the contentious debenture issue in public. Marcel Brunelle made the com- ments after the matter was de- bated in a closed-door meeting Wednesday with Whitby staff and four regional politicians. “If the Region of Durham had some problems with what we’re doing, they should have said so and we could have dealt with it between ourselves,” Mayor Brunelle said in an interview Fri- day. “These days, it seems there’s more politics than good business being done at the Region.” At the centre of the debate is Whitby’s request for a $1.9 million debenture from the Region to purchase six transit buses. Ques- tions are being raised, as Whitby, along with every municipality in Durham, receives GO Transit money that is supposed to be used for transit-related projects. In 2002 and 2003, Whitby re- ceived $3 million in transit funds, which they used for renovations to the Region-owned Centennial Building on Centre Street, which is leased from the Region by the Town of Whitby. The balance is in a reserve fund. “When dealing with financ- ing...money is just money,” Mayor Brunelle said, adding “there’s...no such thing as a ‘transit dollar.’ “How do you want to label dol- lars? It’s all a matter of how you move things around,” he said. “Because we are debenturing buses, does not mean the money the Region gave to us does not go into transit. “It does, in a global picture.” The media was shut out of dis- cussions when the two sides met after regional council, after Re- gional Chairman Roger Anderson said the meeting was to conduct “negotiations” with Whitby. Mr. Anderson, along with fi- nance committee chairman and Clarington Mayor John Mutton, Whitby Councillor Gerry Emm, Finance Commissioner Jim Clapp and Chief Administrative Officer Garry Cubitt met with Whitby treasurer Ken Nix and Chief Administrative Officer Al Claringbold. “It was a private meeting,” Mr. Anderson said in an interview Thursday. Asked why the meeting was pri- vate, Mr. Anderson said, “Be- cause it was my meeting. I called it. I don’t’ have to tell anybody anything about a private meeting with some councillors. “If you’re suggesting it was (a public meeting) you’re wrong.” The meeting was a direction of a June 9 finance committee, and was mentioned just moments be- fore council adjourned Wednes- day. Because the discussions were not part of council, part of a com- mittee or part of an ad hoc com- mittee of either of those bodies, it was not governed by the Munici- pal Act, said Brian Roy, the Re- gion’s lawyer. Therefore, it was not a meeting at all, and the rules of procedure governing when a body can go into camera do not apply, Mr. Roy said. “Five members of council sit- ting around discussing a council issue is not a meeting,” he said, adding the subject of the meeting doesn’t matter even if it is dealing with a public issue such as tax- payer funds. Views on the private meeting were split among other members of finance committee. “The use of financial funds, debenturing, these are not in-camera items,” said Oshawa Coun. Brian Nicholson Thursday, adding he does “not want to be part of back-room negotiations.” “I think we have to be very clear that we’re dealing with the expenditure of public finds.” Scugog Mayor Marilyn Pearce said she didn’t have a problem with the behind-closed-doors meeting, but stressed that no de- cisions can come out of it. Both Mayor Brunelle and Mr. Anderson confirmed that there was no direction or resolution from the meeting, although nei- ther would offer any comment on what was said. Mayor Mutton, who has been outspoken about Whitby’s ac- tions, would only say, “The ball is in Whitby’s court,” when asked about the private talks. Mr. Anderson said the treasur- ers from the two sides would meet again, while Mr. Clapp is sup- posed to report back, as directed, to f inance committee before July 7. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, June 20, 2004 PAGE 3 A/P Let’s Keep our Community Clean! Durham Regional Police said a 15-year-old boy was walking through a parking lot near the intersection of Kingston and Whites roads around 10:45 a.m., when he was approached by a man who demanded his back- pack, then attacked him with a knife. The assailant slashed at the boy’s neck and stabbed him in the back with the six-inch blade, police said. The suspect was last seen rid- ing a bicycle west on Kingston Road. Police said he wrapped a yellow sheet around himself as he rode away. The teen was treated for his injuries and released. Pat O’Brien, formerly a public relations manager for Ontario Power Generation and an advis- er to the Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade, was announced as the 2004 campaign chairman for the United Way of Ajax-Pickering- Uxbridge. “The opportunity came to re- tire, but my passion has always been community work,” he ex- plained. He explained Uxbridge was added to the Ajax-Pickering campaign team three years ago, noting the United Way would continue to network with busi- ness to help run the campaigns, including new partners in Uxbridge. “We feel it’s a challenge and a need in the community,” he said. Mr. O’Brien also said many of the same faces involved in the local United Way are also play- ers within business community. “It’s the same circle (of peo- ple) in the board of trade as the campaigns,” he said, adding it is helpful for networking between the two organizations. Mr. Hatton thinks the annual general meetings offer a chance to demonstrate the fiscal re- sponsibility from the United Way. “We’re not about dividing so- ciety,” he explained. “We want to show where the (funding) goes in more detail for more ac- countability.” Last fiscal year, the United Wa y of Ajax-Pickering-Uxbridge set the bar at a $1.6 million fund-raising target and exceed- ed it by reaching $1,629,482. Among the areas receiving con- tributions were 22 per cent for supporting families, 16 per cent to assisting seniors, and 14 per cent for special needs, accord- ing to the financial statements released at the meeting. P PAGE 6 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, June 20, 2004 www.durhamregion.com Problem not handled properly Public shut out by chairman’s decision to close doors R egional Chairman Roger Anderson’s decision to hold a closed-door meeting to hash out problems with the Town of Whitby may have been legal but was the wrong way to deal with the issue. Mr. Anderson gave a ‘News Advertiser’ reporter the boot from what he described as a private meeting between him- self and several members of the finance committee, includ- ing several Whitby regional councillors. By keeping the media out, the chairman was keeping the public out. This was an issue that should have been dealt with in a public forum. The meeting took place this past Wednesday and involved a discussion of Whitby’s controversial request for deben- tures from the Region to cover the cost of buying six buses for Whitby Transit. The cost of the debenture is $1.9 million. What outraged regional councillors from other municipal- ities was the discovery that Whitby spent provincial money earmarked for transit improvements on rebuilding the Cen- tennial building. And, to top it all off, Whitby Mayor Marcel Brunelle had earlier made a motion that that provincial money be used only for transit improvement. Clearly, Mayor Brunelle was in a difficult position, since the money he had said should be spent on transit was, in- stead, spent on Whitby infrastructure. Thus, Whitby is in need of a debenture for transit. Mr. Anderson wasn’t happy with Whitby’s debenture re- quest, but instead of dealing with the issue in the open - as he should when taxpayers’ money is the issue - he went be- hind closed doors to keep the debate a secret. What Mr. Anderson should have done, and what he still could do, is pay a visit to Whitby council and argue openly that the money that went to the Centennial building was misused and that the debenture request is out of line. Mr. Anderson and Mayor Brunelle owe a full explanation to the taxpayers of Durham Region, especially the citizens of Whitby, as to what went on in that meeting, what conclu- sions were reached and why. They also owe it to taxpayers to disclose what will take place when they face contentious dealings in the future. Chairman election is now long overdue To the editor: Re: ‘Compromise best for chairman issue,’ Tony Doyle column, May 30. I have advocated the direct election of the regional chairman ever since Jim Witty, the then incumbent regional chair- man, declared in November 1997 that he would not let his name stand for a further term of office. What convinced me that the outdated tradition of having Durham council members select the chairman had to be abolished was Mr. Witty’s pronounce- ment in the News Advertiser. He said that during his two-year tenure as Durham’s top official, ‘The one thing that I’ve changed my mind on over the past two years is, we should have a directly elected regional council and a directly elected regional chairman”. That was six years ago. The compro- mise suggested by Mr. Doyle, a referen- dum in 2006, and direct election of the chairman for the first time in 2009, is to- tally unacceptable. Do we have to wait another six years to achieve the obvious? No way! It would play into the hands of the opponents to direct election of the chairman. Again, totally unacceptable. Com- pared to some high-volume e-mail distributors, that’s peanuts. The number of press re- leases that arrived at my News Ad- vertiser e-mail address in just a couple of weeks, however, makes the Liberal Party look a lot like a spam provider. They’re not, mind you. Under the definition, since the provider is not hiding its identity, the many e- mails are not spam. Good thing, because Dan McTeague, Liberal MP and candi- date in the Pickering-Scarborough East Riding, would have to clamp down on his party’s own media ma- chine. Just last fall he introduced a bill to outlaw spam, but it remains in legislative limbo at least until the election is settled and our new crop of parliamentarians go back to the hill. Of course, who knows who will be in control of the federal govern- ment when that happens. If the e-mails were informing the newspaper of candidate events and issues, or the party leader’s itiner- ary, that would be OK. But it’s hard to imagine who had the time to cre- ate all of these e-mails, the majori- ty of which simply tracked Conser- vative candidate appearances and tried to discredit any Conservative member’s statements. All’s fair in love and politics, but these e-mails are too much. They are a waste of time. The Liberal Party has taken some steam out of my beef, though. Once I finally replied to an e-mail with ‘unsubscribe’ in the subject line, only a few more info@liberal.ca e-mails have been coming my way. Every few days or so another seems to arrive. I tried to get Mr. McTeague’s opinion on the e-mails after a can- didate debate in Pickering, but after a short talk in which he wouldn’t offer an opinion on his party’s e-mails, he cut the conver- sation short to work the room. Not wanting to be too pushy, unlike the e-mails, I decided to leave it at that. After all, getting re-elected is hard work. He did direct me to his campaign manager though who made it clear the e-mails are definitely not spam. I just hope when the party begins sending out important information again that I can get back on the list. They’ve lost me for now, but I’d re- turn in a second if they had some- thing relevant to say. David Stell’s column appears every second Sunday. E-mail dstell@durhamregion.com. These are the issues topping the list for the four federal election candidates in Pickering-Scarborough East Riding. If elected June 28, Green Party candi- date Matthew Pollesel’s top priorities would be infrastructure and transit. “As a suburb of Toronto, a lot of people work in the City,” he said. “Without transit and infrastructure that’s difficult, time- consuming and creates pollutants.” It would be up to the provincial govern- ments to decide how to use the federal funds. “Giving the transfers to the province so they could increase urban transit would be my top priority if elected,” he said. The NDP’s top concern is creating a green and prosperous country that leaves nobody behind, says its candidate Gary Dale. “We’ve got some of the most beautiful environmentally sensitive areas in Canada and we have to look after them, not only for us but for our children and our children’s children,” he said. For Mr. Dale and the NDP, decreasing pollution, global warming and decreasing green house gas emissions are top priori- ties. “We will bring in very tough environmen- tal protection legislation and we will put in laws that protect our greenspaces,” he said. An NDP government would offer tax in- centives for consumers who buy fuel-effi- cient vehicles. Mr. Dale said the NDP plans to dedicate five cents a litre of the gas tax for transit and infrastructure and reinvest in a federal social housing strategy. National and local health care is on Dan Mc Teague’s mind. “It is by far and away the most pressing issue,” said the Liberal hopeful. “This is one where individuals have clearly identi- fied we drop waiting lists.” He said the issue is certainly present in Pickering-Scarborough East where there have been changes made to both the Cen- tenary and Ajax site of the Rouge Valley Health System. “This issue is front and centre,” he said. Another issue that heated up as the campaign got under way is gas prices. “First and foremost we have to have an independent gasoline monitoring system,” he said. As the MP for Pickering-Ajax-Uxbridge (it no longer exists due to redistribution of boundaries), Mr. McTeague said he has worked on decreasing gas prices for years. Conservative candidate Tim Dobson said recent scandals and broken promises in government have put accountability at the top of his agenda. “I personally feel that accountability is the single most important issue across the country and in our riding of Pickering- Scarborough East,” he said. “It is the lack of accountability that has gotten us where we are today.” He said there is a loss of trust with gov- ernment and his party is going to restore that. The Conservative plan also involves in- vesting in health care and the military, he said. “What we are going to do is deliver on the five-year agreement on health care and by following through on that we will start to rebuild trust in government,” Mr. Dob- son said. “We’re going to do that at the same time as investing in the military.” Ajax-Pickering candidates pick key election planks By Keith Gilligan Staff Writer DURHAM – Depending on the candidate in Ajax-Pickering Riding, the most impor- tant issue in the federal election closely re- sembles the party’s platform. Health care tops the list for Liberal Party hopeful Mark Holland, while hon- esty and integrity is heard the most by Conservative Party candidate Rene Soetens. Kevin Modeste of the New Demo- cratic Party says there isn’t one issue that sticks out, as a balanced approach is needed. Green Party candidate Karen MacDonald didn’t return calls. Health care is the key issue “nationally and locally. People feel we need the (Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering) hospi- tal to meet the needs of the community. They’re feeling sort of left with a hospital that is not fully resourced,” says Mr. Hol- land. Servicing a community of 250,000, the “hospital hasn’t grown with us.” While the federal government isn’t re- sponsible for building hospitals, it has a role to play in funding health-care facili- ties, Mr. Holland states. To deal with the issue, the Liberals have “chosen our priorities. Instead of $90 bil- lion on everything, we’ve committed $90 billion on health care,” Mr. Holland says. The Liberals would also “meet with the provinces to forge a new deal, a 10-year funding arrangement, so they’ll have sta- ble and needed funding,” he notes. Mr. Modeste says, “I don’t think there’s a single issue. That’s the flaw of cam- paigns in the past. You can’t separate ed- ucation and health care. It’s not either-or. “If you take care of health care, you don’t take care of education and that’s a problem. If you take care of education, you don’t take care of health care and that’s a problem,” he says, adding the issues are “interconnected. “There are major issues and those are health care, infrastructure, crime and ed- ucation. Those issues are key issues be- cause,” he notes. “We will address them accordingly, so we create sustainability for the future, with a multifaceted approach.” “We want a green and prosperous Cana- da, so no one is left behind,” Mr. Modeste states. “We’ll look at our present chal- lenges and take a multifaceted approach and do things practically. Health care - how can we provide quality in a practical way?” he asks. Mr. Soetens has been hearing a recur- ring message at doors. “The one issue raised the most is hon- esty and integrity,” says Mr. Soetens. “There’s just a lack of trust by people gen- erally in the electoral process. They’re looking for some level of comfort that the people they elect will be accountable and responsible for their spending. “I hear that quite often. That’s not to say it’s the most important, but it’s the one heard the most.” The Conservatives showed their ac- countability, he says, by having each can- didate selected at the riding level and not appointed by the party leadership. “We started the process.” If the Conservative Party forms the next government, it plans to have committees review legislation coming from the various federal departments. The committees would be “empowered to inspect spending from their department.” In addition, MPs would also be allowed to vote freely on legislation, other than budgetary items “as things come along. Suite 101, 905-426-6090 (in front of Ajax-Pickering Hospital) Email: alamdch@yahoo.com With the longer days and rising temperatures, all signs are pointing to summer – a time when Canadians become re-energised with an urge to run, bike, rollerblade, swim, golf, garden, hike and more. Make S.M.A.R.T. choices and ease into activity after a long winter, in order to prevent injury and maximize your enjoyment. More than 90 percent of incidents that result in injuries are predictable and preventable. “May and June are always the busiest months at our clinic” says Judy Boivin, physiotherapist and owner of Milton Physiotherapy and Sports Injuries Clinic, in Milton, ON. “We get a large increase in sports injuries that are a result of people doing too much too soon, without properly warming up. A hamstring muscle pull from soccer or baseball, for example, is very common at this time of year. Running and stretching regularly through the winter or at least for several weeks before the season opener, dramatically reduces your risk of injury. The beginning of every sports season requires an extra focus on injury prevention.” The Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA) encourages Canadians to consider the following S.M.A.R.T. c hoices to build and maintain their personal mobility. S.M.A.R.T. is the acronym for Stretch, Move, Add it up, Reduce strain, Talk to a physiotherapist. 1. STRETCH – Stretching is important for physical mobility. Every activity requires an appropriate warm-up and cool-down. Keep your muscles flexible and relaxed, your joints mobile, and relieve tension and strain by doing a few gentle stretches before and after your activity. Do wnload CPA’s Stretching Primer at http://www.physiotherapy.ca/pdfs/StretchingPrimer.pdf. 2. MOVE – Build activity into your whole day. While it’s important to find enjoyable, safe activities tailored to suit your level of fitness, it’s also important to make activity a regular part of your day. Build movement and position changes into your routine – answer the phone standing up, and stretch during a break. 3. ADD IT UP – Add up the time spent doing particular activities. Planning and pacing are very important. Don’t over exert yourself. Health Canada recommends 60 minutes of activity every day but this doesn’t have to be done all at once. You can add up your activities, 10 minutes at a time, to get that daily total. To keep it interesting: · Alter the route you take for a walk or run - get of the bus one block early, take the stairs, not the elevator · Vary the sport s o r activities you have chosen – each sport or activity uses muscles in a different way · Drink water before, during and after activity t o ensure proper hydration. 4. REDUCE STRAIN – Physiotherapists encourage Canadians to keep active with sensible exercises suited to their age and physical condition. · Change positions and tasks often. If a position is causing discomfort, move out of it. · Don’t let little hurts turn into big hurts. Pain and discomfort are the body’s signals that something is wrong. If you experience pain for more than 48 hours after your activity, reduce the level of activity. If pain persists, take some time off or change the activity. For example, if running is painful, switch to cycling. · Do a proper warm up and cool down. Whether walking, running or gardening, a proper warm up readies the muscles and joints for the coming activity and may lessen the chances of muscle tears and pulls. A cool down is an excellent time to work on flexibility - a warm muscle can be stretched to its optimal range of motion. 5. TALK TO A PHYSIOTHERAPIST – Physiotherapists are the health care professionals who can advise people of all ages and activity levels with specific concerns about their mobility. With their applied knowledge and understanding of the human body in action, physiotherapists are able to help increase mobility, relieve pain, build strength and improve balance and cardiovascular function. A physiotherapist will assess any injuries or pre-existing conditions and provide appropriate treatment that will promote an earlier return to activity as well as advice on how to prevent recurrence of injury. “Don’t let a minor muscle strain be your excuse for not exercising,” remarks Judy. “Many sports injuries can be easily remedied with a visit to your physiotherapist. People often avoid seeking treatment for injuries, thinking it will just go away if they rest. Physiotherapists can help you get back on the field or into the gym, allowing you to stay active. After-all, physical activity is vital to your health and quality of life.” Make S.M.A.R.T. choices this summer, tips from the Canadian Physiotherapy Association 905-420-0003 1163 Kingston Rd., Pickering A Company You Can Trust • Over 270 Locations CALL TODAY FOR YOUR FREE CONSULTATION 28 Pounds LIGHTER 100 Percent HAPPIER 905-831-1280 1235 Bayly St., Pickering Full service weight loss programs. • Guaranteed weight loss • Lose up to 7 lbs per week • Safe, easy & effective! “Herbal Magic has helped me reach my weight loss goal in such a short period of time - ONLY 4 MONTHS! Many people don’t have bowel movements for days and sometimes a week. The more compromised digestion, the more symptoms will prevail. It is not as simple as in one end and out the other. Digestion is a ser ies of chemical breakdowns. Proteins break down into amino acids, carbohydrates break down into glucose (when properly absorbed into the body) and fats break down into fatty acids. When digestion is compromised, symptoms occur. People today feast on chips, crackers, bagels, pretzels, cakes, muffins and granola bars. Whole foods such as fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and free- range roasted poultry and legumes just compete with the taste of refined foods that are laden with salt and sugar. A diet high in refined foods provides no fiber and too much sugar. This is what begins the vicious cycle: 1. Constipation or sluggish digestion occurs. 2. Nutrients don’t get absorbed. 3. Immune system Constipation and the vicious cycle Karen Steward, R.N.C.P., C.N.P. plummets. 4. Bacterial infections manifest. 5. Antibiotics are prescribed. 6. Good bacteria are wiped out. 7. Bad bacteria multiply. 8. New infection sets in and more antibiotics are required. When bacteria levels are high, food cravings go out of control. If this sounds all too familiar, food sensitivity testing can help! The individual sensitivity report scales the skin measurement readings into: 1. foods to be avoided; 2. foods that need to be consumed in moderation; 3. foods that are satisfactory; 4. foods that are beneficial. If further assistance is needed for more problematic health challenges, a nutritional consultation on intestinal and digestive health is highly recommended and affordable! If you experience unwanted symptoms, begin by understanding your sensitivity and believe that wellness is within your reach. Karen Steward offers allergy testing and nutritional consulting. Driver makes most of racing weekend Ajax’s Kelly MacPhaden drives and wins in Formula First series race AJAX —An Ajax driver had plenty of success behind the wheel at Shannonville Motor- sports Park recently. Kelly MacPhaden made her debut in a 2.0L Formula Ford Zetec at Shannonville. The For- mula First racer was given the opportunity by Greg Beresford of Beresford Box Co., to drive his Formula Ford car on the re- g ional test day. MacPhaden, who has never driven a car of this magnitude, mentally and physically pre- pared for the challenge prior to her test day. She piloted the winged car equipped with slick tires around the track like a natural. Her rapid adjustment to the high-powered vehicle was ref lected in only a few sessions where she displayed progres- sively quicker lap times compa- rable to more experienced rac- ers. "Driving that car is a very humbling experience. I couldn't believe the amount of grip in the slick tires and how hard I could push the car. I was really impressed with the responsive- ness; that car is fast and twitchy where one little mistake can put you off in the grass." Following test day, MacPhaden jumped back into her car and set the best lap time for the weekend. Her suc- cess in the winged car carried over to her first race where she f inished first. For the second event, MacPhaden continued to domi- nate and took the checkered f lag. MacPhaden duelled on the track with Formula First veter- an driver Guy Bellingham of England. Fighting for first- and second-place positions throughout the race, the Ajax driver lost control in attempt to pass Bellingham allowing him to gain a 13-second lead. After six laps, MacPhaden continued to charge and was once again nose to tail with Bellingham. On the last lap there was contact as she passed rookie Dominic Lebre- ton. She was knocked out of the race, however, she was able to maintain a second-place finish. "I really worked hard this weekend," she says. "It was nice to see that after the race I was thanked and noticed for my ef- forts." MacPhaden began racing in the open-wheel series last year and concluded the season by achieving the Formula First rookie of the year, Canadian Automobile Sports Club's (CASC) Lady Driver who dis- plays sportsmanship, ability and sparkle, and the British Automobile Racing Club's Best New Driver award, past recipi- ents being Canadians Paul Tracy and Ron Fellows. She also finished second in the overall points competition in the First championship and third in the Canadian CASC championship. Brooklin Merchants’ loss is Ajax-Pickering’s gain with addition of Fr ank Littlejohn By Al Rivett Sports Editor DURHAM — One team's cast-off is another team's treasure as the Ajax-Pickering Rock believe they added a significant piece to their roster this week. The Ontario Lacrosse Associ- ation senior 'B' team announced the signing of Frank Littlejohn for the remainder of the season. On the Merchants roster for the past four years, Littlejohn was released by Brooklin and imme- diately snapped up by Ajax-Pick- ering. "We're very excited to get him," says Rock head coach and gener- al manager Paul St. John. "We tried to get him last year." Littlejohn hadn't been playing for the Merchants this season, St. John says, but was thinking about rejoining the team when they released him. St. John notes Littlejohn brings with him a certain tough- ness and edge. But, more than that, he's a complete player who can score as well as play defence. "He brings so much more to the game than pure toughness. On that team (Brooklin), he couldn't utilize his other skills," says St. John, who expects to use Littlejohn on the right side of the defence. Littlejohn was expected to be in the lineup for the Rock in Fri- day's game against the Ennis- more Shamrocks and for Satur- day's tilt against the Barrie Lakeshores. St. John expects to make more changes to his roster in advance of the league's July 1 trading deadline. "A c ouple of more guys are in- terested in playing for us, so we could be busy before July 1, that's for sure," says St. John. The event is known by its onerous title as it includes three of the top 10 teams for the age group in the province, from which only one team would emerge. Ajax clinched the tournament victory after defanging the Nia- gara Falls Vipers 5-2 in the final. Dominic and Beau Johnson each scored a pair of goals, while Em- mett O'Connor added a single. Ajax now moves on to the On- tario Cup quarter-finals against Nor th London in August. The Admirals opened the tournament in frustrating fash- ion, playing to a scoreless draw with Glen Shields. Although dominating the entire contest, the Ajacians couldn't finish on their scoring chances. Ajax rebounded in Game 2 to blank Ottawa South 2-0. O'Con- nor started the scoring, followed by a goal from Andrew Mbala. The undefeated Brampton Chargers club was Ajax's next foe, with the Admirals coming up with a stellar effort in posting a 1-0 victory. Forwards Jeff Gib- bons, Anthony Valerio, Jordan Gibbs, Matthew Lionetti and Nicolas Orton put pressure on the Brampton defence through- out the contest. Liam Connon broke through in the first half for the only goal. The offensive line of Luke Mor- rison, Michael Evans, Lee Boyle, Luke Todd and Daniel O'Connor kept Brampton off the score- sheet the rest of the way. Adam Redpath earned three shutouts in the tournament. The team continues its regu- lar-season play in the Regional Premier division. The Admirals are undefeated in league play thus far. Michael Roberts and Cid Con- non coach the team. Ajax boys rise to top of ‘pool of death’ DURHAM — Boys can improve their court sense at an upcom- ing volleyball camp in Ajax. Volleyball club looking for campers Plenty of sting in Pickering selects’ swing PICKERING — The Picker- ing minor bantam select baseball team captured both ends of a double- header against the Vaughan Vikings recently. After tying and losing to Richmond Hill last week, Pickering bounced back against Vaughan, pounding the Vikings 18-3 in the opener, and then 6- 3 in the nightcap. In Game 1, Corey Wan, Greg Trusdale, Mark Or- lecki and Bobby Gert- sakis contributed three hits apiece for Pickering. Andrew Brown had two hits, with singles going to Matt McDowell and Matt Savage. Pitchers McDowell, Trusdale and Wan held Vaughan to five hits. In the second game, Vaughan kept it close but Pickering hung on to sweep the doubleheader. Brown led the team with two hits, with singles to Trusdale, Gertsakis, Mc- Dowell and Matt Halket. Pickering pitchers Halket, Gertsakis, Brown and Andrew Nauth again limited Vaughan to five hits. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, June 20, 2004 PAGE 13 P We Welcome All Major Fleet Cards CANADIAN TIRE PICKERING ONLY 1735 Pickering Parkway (at Brock Road), Pickering • 905-686-2308 WITH THIS COUPON ONLYCANNOT BE USED WITH ANY OTHER PROMOTION.
