Public registers its thoughts on extra units Input gathered on accessory apartment units By Jeff Hayward Special to the News Advertiser PICKERING – A City proposal to legalize all accessory dwelling units (ADUs) in Pickering was laid out for residents this week. Pickering planning staff held a public meeting Thursday in council chambers, looking for input on the units, which in- clude basement and accessory apartments, and in-law suites. Although the City is aware they exist, they are considering a bylaw that would require all units be registered, something not currently done. “There are 10 planning con- siderations (for ADUs),” said City planner Ross Pym, who led a presentation on the ad- vantages of registering ADUs. Amongst the areas the staff studied, are social aspects, parking, type of dwelling, prop- erty standards, and taxation. The presentation outlined that some ADUs do not meet safety standards and some owners aren’t declaring them on income tax. “The City wants to know how many residents are in a house It was a pregnant pause Hospital avoids temporary closure of obstetrics By Danielle Milley Staff Writer AJAX – The Rouge Valley Health System is breathing a huge sigh of relief after staff and administration worked hard to avert a near crisis at the Ajax and Pickering hospital. Hospital officials announced late Thursday that the obstet- rics ward at the hospital would be temporarily closed from June 16 to September because of a shortage of full-time obstetri- cians. But by late Friday after- noon the schedule had been filled after many calls to other obstetricians in the area. “We’ve been very busy and we’ve gotten the help that we need. We did not want to jeopar- dize the care to the women of this area,” said Dr. Terry Loga- ridis, chief of obstetrics at Rouge Valley, late Friday after- noon. “We have the coverage and we will not close the depart- ment.” In an interview Friday morn- ing Hume Martin, president and CEO, said services would have to be temporarily closed and pa- tients sent to Centenary if doc- tors were not found. “There is the possibility of a temporary program transfer until we have an adequate num- ber of obstetricians on staff to restore service,” Mr. Martin said. “We’re actively looking at doing everything we can to find dedicated obstetricians who will allow us to provide guaranteed service over the summer.” The possibility of the closure arose after the hospital found out it would only have two full- time obstetricians to cover the summer months after one of its physicians unexpectedly an- nounced he was taking a leave of absence; another obstetrician had already resigned less than ✦See Residents page 5 ✦See Full page 16 A/P PAGE 2 NEWS ADVERTISER SUNDAY EDITION, June 13,2004 www.durhamregion.com Doing the dishes is about to become fun. By Carly Foster Staff Writer DURHAM – After an angry debate, regional officials said they would again meet with Whitby to find out why the Town is trying to get a debenture for buses. “This has a real impact on the rest of us,” said Pickering Councillor Mark Holland at Wednesday’s fi- nance committee meeting. “I take real exception to how this is being handled.” Whitby has asked for a $1.9-million debenture through the Region to purchase six buses. Questions are being raised, as Whitby - along with every municipality in Durham - re- ceives GO Transit money that is supposed to be used for transit-re- lated projects. In 2002 and 2003, Whitby received $3 million in GO Transit funds, which it used partially to fund reno- vations to the Region-owned but Whitby-leased Centennial Building on Centre Street. The balance is in a reserve fund. That news, combined with the debenture request, has some politi- cians angry. “This is a debenture that really shouldn’t even be happening,” said Regional Chairman Roger Ander- son. “I really don’t want this to come down to Whitby challenging the Re- gion’s authority.” Councillors were particularly con- fused after learning that it was Whit- by Mayor Marcel Brunelle who moved a previous resolution that the GO money only be used for transit- related purposes. On top of that, the Province in 2002 specifically said the GO money had to be used for transit. “The Government of Ontario ex- pects municipalities to reinvest these savings into public transit in order to address the growing con- gestion problems in the GTA,” said correspondence from the Ministry of Finance in 2002. Ken Nix, Whitby’s treasurer, said last week that it’s up to municipali- ties to decide how to spend the GO money from the Region, and that “everything was perfectly legal to re- quest” the money. Mr. Anderson pointed out that if the Region takes over municipal transit, they don’t want to take over a system “loaded with debt.” And that debt will have to be paid for by all the municipalities, said Coun. Holland. Whitby Councillor Gerry Emm, who received notes from Mr. Nix during the meeting, said that refus- ing a debenture request from a mu- nicipality would be “out of order.” Jim Clapp, the Region’s commis- sioner of finance, had suggested in a report that Whitby use the $1.4 mil- lion in GO money it will receive this year plus the remaining transit money from last year to fund the buses, rather than get a debenture. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, June 13, 2004 PAGE 3 A/P pickeringtowncentre.com Rick from Shoppers Drug Mart Just redeem your receipts at the Guest Services kiosk to receive your FREE gift wrap. Whitby debenture request has Region seeing red Redevelopment work will be av ailable to public By Danielle Milley Staff Writer AJAX – The redeveloped Ajax and Pickering hospital is finally finished - well, more precisely the model of the redesign is complete and on display. Officials with the Rouge Valley Health System held a ribbon cutting Wednesday evening for the redevelop- ment office that will be open to the public by the end of the month. The office is to serve two purposes now that the hospital has moved on to the next stage of expansion. “We wanted a place where the com- munity could come in and keep up-to- date with the project and where we could meet,” said Gloria Zive, the vice-president of facilities support. The office is to have a model of what the hospital will look like after the re- development is complete and dia- grams of the work on display. Ms. Zive also said the plan is to have the office staffed so the work can be explained to the public. In addition to having the chance to view the plans for the $46.7-million project, the office also gives the public the opportunity to have a say in the fine details of what the new Ajax hos- pital is going to look like. Paint colours and finishes will be displayed for comment, as well as samples of equipment. “The community is going to be ac- tively involved in the design and rede- velopment,” said Katie Cronin-Wood, hospital spokesman. The hospital has completed the block plan stage of planning and is waiting for those plans to be approved by the Ministry of Health at the end of June or beginning of July. Once the plans are approved, the hospital can move on to the detailed design stage that will include input from staff and the public. Everyone at the hospital is excited to see the plans moving ahead after years of hard work. “It’s been a long time in the mak- ing,” Ms. Zive said. “We are going to make it happen, plans are beginning to emerge. The staff is excited,” said president and chief executive officer Hume Martin. “With the growth in Durham this can’t happen soon enough.” The plans include a new emergency department able to serve 60,000 pa- tients (the current facility handles 42,000 patients and was designed for 20,000); an expanded mental health department with nine additional beds; and a complex continuing care department with 30 beds. There is to be an addition of 75,000 square feet and 60,000 square feet are to be reno- vated. The construction is scheduled to begin in 2006. Under the proposal, property taxes would be based on fin- ished floor space within a unit. For example, if an unfinished basement is converted into liv- able area for renting to a ten- ant, the tax assessment would increase. Only detached and semi-de- tached dwellings are being con- sidered as suitable for an ADU. “The proposed cost to regis- ter (an ADU) is $500,” explained Mr. Pym. “We are considering making (the cost) $250 for the f irst six months to make people come forward.” An unregistered ADU would be removed by the City, he said of the penalty for not comply- ing. The presentation also out- lined that many ADUs are con- centrated along certain spots in the city, including Brock Road and Hwy. 401. Paul Etherington, who works in real estate, was among the small crowd of about 10 on hand. “It would be easier to circle all of Pickering,” Etherington said of the spots where the ADUs exist. “They’re every- where.” Mr. Etherington had con- cerns about how current dwellings are being looked after. “They’re poorly maintained... kids could do it better.” He believes the legal units could be properly enforced, with some co-operation. “You need to allow tenants the ability to complain without the fear of being evicted,” he ex- plained. “I’m seeing people sleeping in the same room as furnaces.” Leonard Waddell does not have and will not consider in- corporating an ADU into his household. He said the units are an issue of fairness. “I’m completely legal... I pay my taxes, it seems that we (the legal homeowners) are subsi- dizing the illegal owners,” he added. “It seems those (with illegal ADUs) have an unfair advan- tage over us.” He also mentioned that he thought the issue of taxation was played down in the presen- tation, and that the City is try- ing to highlight the safety issue to balance it. “The (dwellings) are already illegal... this is a tax grab,” he said. A decision on whether to go ahead with the plan will likely come in the fall after public comments have been consid- ered. PICKERING-SCARBOROUGH EAST RIDING VOTES TIM DOBSON Conservative MATTHEW POLLESEL Green Party DAN McTEAGUE Liberal GARY DALE NDP Vo t ers have their pick of medication By Mike Ruta Staff Writer DURHAM – Tim Dobson can re- late to long waits in hospital emergency rooms. L ast year, the Conservative Party candidate in the Picker- ing-Scarborough East riding went to Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital for some ur- gent tests ordered by his family physician. “I found the staff to be really caring and considerate and pro- fessional, and yet I had to wait five hours,” says Mr. Dobson. He says the country’s health- care service woes can be traced back to Prime Minister Paul Mar tin’s tenure as federal fi- nance minister, when billions were removed from health trans- fers to the provinces. He says the Conservative Party supports an existing agreement, the 2003 health ac- cord reached by former Prime Minister Jean Chretien and the provincial and territorial leaders. The five-year plan, which the government at the time said it would support with $35 billion, reinforces all the principles of the Canada Health Act and calls for expanded coverage of, for ex- ample, catastrophic pharmaceu- tical care. “Let’s just not have the federal government deciding year by year how much to have in health care,” Mr. Dobson says. “We sup- port that agreement; it was signed on by all the provinces.” The only stumbling block is federal support, he says, noting Mr. Martin is now talking of a 10- year agreement. If enacted, he said the accord would provide the stable, long- term funding the provinces are asking for. And, in turn, Mr. Dob- son says that would allow the Province to provide funding for needed improvements to the Ajax-Pickering and Centenary sites of the Rouge Valley Health System. Gary Dale says the answer lies in the Romanow Report. “The NDP is fully committed to implementing the Romanow report, and that means the fed- eral government has to step up to its funding commitments,” says the NDP candidate. He says, if elected, the NDP will ensure the provinces get the money they need to fund the health-care system, and that it is earmarked specifically for health care. Mr. Dale says the country’s health system, however, is “in- complete,” missing components such as pharmaceutical and dental-care coverage. A hospital patient receives free drugs, while the same person once released has to pay for them, which can create financial hardships, he says. “People should not go hungry because they’re sick; people should not go hungry because they need their medically-neces- sary medication,” he says. The NDP would phase in im- provements to the system, ex- panding what is covered, start- ing with pharmacare. Later, den- tal-care coverage would be in- cluded until all aspects of the health system are covered, says Mr. Dale, stressing this won’t happen overnight. “It would come in over many, many years as the (health care) budget is brought under con- trol,” he says. Dan McTeague says cutting a cheque cannot simply solve the country’s health-care problems. It requires the federal govern- ment and the provinces working with hospitals to address the is- sues. And, it means that the fin- ger-pointing style of the past, where the federal government is blamed for a funding shortfall, has to stop. “We see this as nothing less than a partnership with the provincial governments,” he says. Despite the accord reached last year, Mr. McTeague says there are a number of priorities to be addressed in concert with the provinces, including the issue of duplication of services and acceptable wait times. The Mar tin Liberals will do their share, he says, noting the federal government is back at the table with “a substantial delivery of money. “Our emphasis here is to seek and get the provinces and terri- tories on side on a strategy on funding, on what expectations are.” That process will likely begin this summer, buoyed by a huge health-care system investment Prime Minister Paul Martin pledged May 25. If elected, he is vowing to invest $3 billion over the next two years, $4 billion for a national fund to reduce wait times, $2 billion for national home care and an additional $2 billion for priorities like intensive care and mental illness. “We believe that the Liberals’ (health) platform is a step in the right direction, but only a small step,” says Matthew Pollesel, Green Party candidate. He says it fails to address Canada’s aging and growing population. Mr. Pollesel says Canada needs more doctors, and the Green Party has a plan to look afar for more physicians. “We want to try and develop equivalencies with other coun- tries so doctors can come here and practice here,” he says. As well, the party believes it’s crucial to pay attention to the prevention side of the health pic- ture, with a role for naturopaths and others who keep people healthy. Mr. Pollesel says anyone who raises the issue of reforming health care risks being branded a slayer of our public system, which he says inhibits a needed, serious debate on the system. The Green Party would make a long-term funding commit- ment and Mr. Pollesel says it also supports increasing the federal contribution to the provinces’ health care bill. How much he couldn’t say, but adds the per- centage covered by the federal government would increase to levels seen in the 1980s. Candidates all have a cure for health-care ails The candidates running for federal election June 28 have a variety of ideas for fixing the health system, including of- fering a boost to Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital. Residents have a say on dwelling units ✦ Residents from page 1 It’s up to you to vote If the trend continues, drastic steps may have to be taken The democratic deficit Prime Minister Paul Martin likes to talk about is not so much a problem in the House of Commons, but rather involves a steep de- cline in the number of voters in federal elections. How to address non-voters and engage them in politics, at least for a few weeks every election, is the key challenge of all political parties. Despite the advent of the Internet and media coverage, which can reach saturation levels during campaigns, many voters just block out what's going on. While it's clear every society sees at least 10 to 20 per cent of eligible voters who will never take part in the system, the increase to more than a third of non-participants at the ballot box is worrisome for the future of democracy in Canada. It's been a clear and constant downward trend. Nearly 80 per cent of eligible voters went to the polls in national elec- tions in the late 1950s and early 1960s. That dipped all the way to just 61 per cent casting a ballot in the 2000 federal election. What troubles many observers is a lack of interest shown by first-time voters. Studies have shown that those who do not vote in an election by the time they turn 25 are unlikely to ever vote during their lives. So parties of all stripes are seeking out the 18 to 24 year- olds in hoping that votes that would otherwise not be cast, go in their favour. That's why parties try to enlist younger candidates and target "green" issues and education funding in their plat- forms. They hope to bring young people in as volunteers and get them to vote in their favour on E-day. High schools have tried to get younger people interested by having candidates visit schools and by holding mock elections. It's a good start and, if done nationally, may bear fruit in future elections. If the trend towards lower turnouts continues, Canada may have to look at the Australian system where voter turnout is mandatory and those who chose not to vote face a stiff fine. At least in Australia, turnout is well over 90 per cent. Councillors should listen to the people To the editor: Re: 'Debate sparks fireworks,' May 28. I was shocked when I read of the de- cisions by Brock, Uxbridge, Whitby and Scugog councils to ignore the majority of our citizens and endorse the old boys' network of politics that reigns in Durham. I'd suggest these councils pay for cur- rent Chairman Roger Anderson's next car. How about a white Cadillac with big steer horns on the front to reflect the Dukes of Hazzard's, Boss Hogg mental- ity of politics that they have upheld. Just as upsetting, was the behaviour of some councillors at the last regional council meeting. Rick Johnson may want to consider upholding the man- date given to him by Pickering council. He may also want to worry more about his constituents, who have spoken loud and clear on this issue, instead of pleas- ing his "forefathers". As for Mark Holland wanting to vote "how he feels" instead of how his local council instructed, was he voting with his feelings when he voted to pad his pockets with an outlandish raise this year? God forbid this man should be sent to Ottawa to get hold of our feder- al tax coffers. Already, it seems more people than ever are standing at the ready to cast their votes in protest, the old 'anyone-but-them' theory. We 're hearing much too often these days about how we can't elect (insert Stephen Harper or Paul Martin here) to government, because the country will collapse under his arrogant rule. What ever happened to doing your homework and picking the party platform that works best? Mo re than 150 Ajax and Picker- ing residents jammed into two de- bates this week, listening to what the candidates in the Ajax-Picker- ing and Pickering-Scarborough East ridings had to offer, along with the ideals of their parties. But, it seemed only Kevin Mod- este, the Ajax-Pickering NDP can- didate, seemed to fully grasp this fundamental flaw in our collective thinking. He challenged those on hand to skip the protests and vote for someone, not against. Good for him, because we're re- ally treading on dangerous ground here. Consider our recent history as just one example of a protest vote gone wrong. Dalton McGuinty ran an election campaign saying he knew of the large deficit but that he could still balance the books, boost spending and not cut any- thing vital. The Liberal leader ran a campaign of lies, but we accept- ed them because we wanted any- thing but a Tory government. Very few people questioned his math. That's not to say that a Tory government would have been bet- ter, but maybe under the proper scrutiny more of Mr. McGuinty's plans would have come to light. And look at the results. Mr. McGuinty's doing his best to wres- tle away Bob Rae's title as worst Ontario premier ever. Boy we're mad, but we sure showed those Tories. So do your homework. Go online and read the party platforms. Find out where the Conservatives stand and how their positions conform to or butt against your beliefs. Find out why you do or don't like the Liberal platform. And do take the time to consider the positions of the other parties. Ta ke it a step further and call your local candidate offices. Watch this week's leadership debate. Be informed. Even with a great teacher and an interesting program, it is hard enough to get kids interested in problem-solving and clear writing. Throw in a wind-down month before summer holidays, add two months of mindless holidays and follow this by a ramped-up month (September) and you have an unmotivated and unfocused student. It is no wonder that kids resent returning to school and see it as an intrusion on their lives. However, kids who have attended a properly constructed summer program-like those at OXFORD LEARNING - not only keep last year’s skills sharp, they develop new thinking and learning habits. A loss of momentum and motivation does not occur. continued on page 8 Last year, a large school board r eleased an interesting study. It seems that students who attend summer classes not only achieve higher grades but also develop a positive outlook on school. Unfortunately, most parents and many teachers think the opposite is true. Imagine being able to improve motivation by taking summer classes. The reasons why this happens are both simple and complex. Learning consists of a series of purposeful activities: activities we can control and direct. Children must learn that it is possible to control and direct their own learning activities. Parents usually leave this control in the hands of the education system. They f eel that it is the schools’ responsibility. They feel that teaching is active w hile learning is passive. This unfortunate mind set often carries over into the summer and winter holidays. If learning is the direct responsibility of the teacher and the classroom, then a vacation from these permits the student to let go of all responsibility for school and relax. No harm done. Unfortunately, the exact opposite is true. By taking the summer off, education sufferers and students drift backwards. Students lose much of the academic gains they made during the previous year but, more importantly, they lose their ability and motivation to learn. As OH! OH! SUMMEROH! OH! Stew- ardship Ontario is made up of compa- nies that produce paper and packag- ing that consumers end up recycling. The Province, through the Waste Diversion Act, has mandated that those companies help municipalities offset by 50 per cent the net cost of residential recycling. The cheque to the Region at last week’s works committee meeting was the first of four this year, and was part of $6.7 million given to municipalities across Ontario. Business Centre may relocate DURHAM – The lease is up at the grand Ringwood House in south Whit- by, and the Region’s Business Advisory Centre is relocating to the tune of $67,000, works committee heard last week. The centre had been in the Hop- kins Street heritage house since 1998, and is considering renting 209 square metres in the McLaughlin Square build- ing at 50 Richmond Street in Oshawa. It is also negotiating with ACSYS Technologies to rent some of the space to the company’s employee placement centre, which is helping its 1,200 laid off employees find other work. No deal has been finalized yet, said Pat Olive, the commissioner of works. The finance committee approved funding for the move at its June 9 meeting, which must be approved by council. Building permits decreasing DURHAM – Building permits for January to March 2004 in Durham have decreased by 12 per cent from the same time last year, a report to Tuesday’s planning committee meeting said. That’s a decrease from $313 mil- lion in 2003 to $276 million in 2004. De- spite the decline, the value was still the second highest in the last 10 years, the report said. The value of residential building permits was virtually the same, at around $181 million, while commercial building permits decreased by 28 per cent to $95 million. The numbers are compiled through by local municipali- ties. TB updates DURHAM – There are no active cases of tuberculosis in Durham, says the health department, in giving an up- date to the health and social services committee last week. The health department has con- tacted more than 3,200 people who, in two separate cases, may have come in contact with two people who had TB. The Region continues to monitor those people who went on medication for positive skin tests, while others are being treated by their family doctors or at the Whitby Family Healthcare Centre, said Marion Megesi, manager public health and nursing. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, June 13, 2004 PAGE 9 P Advertisment Let the celebrating begin... at the new Bridal Wardrobe which opened it’s doors this week in the Pickering Village. Heat disorders are a group of physically related illnesses caused by prolonged exposure to hot temperatures, restricted fluid intake or failure of the temperature regulation mechanisms in the body. They include heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke (also called sunstroke). H eat stroke and heat exhaustion are the most common types of heat-related illnesses. Heat stroke is the most dangerous and requires immediate medical attention. Heat cramps are the least severe of the heat-related illnesses and often the first signal that the body is having difficulty with increased temperatures. Heat cramps are painful muscle spasms caused by an excessive loss of salts due to heavy perspiration. Cramps are more likely to occur in the legs and abdomen than in any other part of the body. Those in the highest risk brackets are people working in extreme heat, elderly people, young children, people with health problems and those who are unable to naturally and properly cool their bodies. Tr eating heat cramps involves getting the individual into a cool place and giving them cool water with a teaspoon of salt per quart. Do not give salt tablets; they can make the condition worse. Mild stretching and massaging of the muscle area is recommended once the condition improves. Heat exhaustion is a more complex and serious condition. Symptoms inc lude nausea, headache, dizziness, mental confusion, exhaustion, overall weakness and a weak but rapid pulse. Breathing will be fast and shallow. A deficiency in the production of sweat and insufficent water and salt intake puts an individual at high risk for heat exhaustion. Those most at risk include athletes, firefighters, construction workers and one who wears heavy clothing in hot humid weather. A person suffering from heat exhaustion should be moved into a cool place. Elevate their feet, remove or loosen their clothing and give them cold (not iced) salt water to drink. Replacement of body fluids and rest are usually all that is needed for a full recovery. If not taken care of, heat exhaustion can rapidly develop into heat stroke. If a person’s body temperature is higher than 104 degrees, they are suffering from heat stroke. Other symptoms inc lude mental confusion with possible combative tendencies and bizarre behavior, staggering and faintness. The skin will look dry and flush and the pulse will be strong and rapid. The person can quickly lose consciousness or go into convulsions. An individual suffering from heat stroke should seek immediate emergency medical attention. W hile waiting for help, get them to a cool place, remove or loosen their clothing, wrap them in wet towels and place ice packs in areas with the greatest blood supply. These include the neck, under the arms and knees and in the groin. Bed rest for several days is recommended. It is better to take the precautions necessary to prevent heat disorders. By Jane McDonald Staff Writer DURHAM –With increas- ing tuition and associated education costs, high school and university stu- dents are more in need of jobs than ever. But no job is as important as their health and safety. It’s been more than two years since Lisa Barrett’s son came home from work. The 20-year-old was killed in May 2002 on a construction job he’d started just a couple of weeks earlier. “Make sure you know what your children are getting into,” pleads Ms. Barrett. “Ask the employ- er about the safety of the job. Make sure your chil- dren come home safe.” Kenny Barrett was struck and killed by a bobcat construction vehi- cle, which was being oper- ated by another employee at a residential construc- tion site in north Oshawa. Although an inquest has yet to be held, an Ontario Ministry of Labour hear- ing recently fined the owner of the paving com- pany $50,000 and has given him flexible terms as to when he’ll make pay- ment. That’s small solace to Kenny’s grieving moth- er and sister. “He gets to go home to his family, his wife and his children,” says Ms. Bar- rett. A single parent to Kenny and his sister, Ms. Barrett says she’s always struggled. But nothing compares to the loss of her son, a promising artist who had won awards at school. One way she has honoured her late son is by establishing a bursary in his name, which has been awarded, and will continued to be given out to deserving art students for the next 19 years, one year for each of those lived by Kenny. Each year since the tragedy claimed her son, Mrs. Barrett has partici- pated in the IAPA (North America Occupational Safety and Health) 5-km walk. She also treasures the section of the Canadian L ifeQuilt that depicts Kenny’s smiling face. The Canadian LifeQuilt is a unique and perma- nent memorial dedicated to the thousands of young women and men between the ages of 15 and 24 who have been killed or in- jured on the job. Made by a Toronto artist, the quilt includes memorial patch- es for 100 young workers killed on the job with indi- vidual. Another 100 in- jured young workers are recognized on the centre panel. “Make sure your kids know what they’re getting into,” stresses Mrs. Bar- rett. “They’ve got the initia- tive to work, but make sure you know they’re going to come home safe that night to their fami- lies.” Rob Ellis, who was in Ajax last week with a sim- ilar message, is the hon- orary chairman of the Friends of the LifeQuilt. His 18-year-old son, David was killed on his second day of work at a bakery in Febr uary 1999. On Wednesday, June 9, the students built two boardwalks over a wet and muddy area of a trail in the forest. Each student put their name on the end of the piece of cedar decking they installed so they can identify it in the future. Te acher Larry Noonan said because part of the Grade 5 science program is structures, actually building one would benefit the environment, giving the students some real ex- perience, something they can remember and bring their families to see in the future. Mother pleads for on-the-job safety PI CKERIN G –Nearly three-quarters of the ve- hicles pulled over last week for safety inspec- tions - including a taxi with little but carpeting for a floor - were taken off the road, according to Durham Regional Police. The joint effort by po- lice and the provincial transportation and envi- ronment ministries saw 38 of 53 vehicles inspected taken off the road for var- ious reasons, police said. In addition, 36 charges were laid, while a trucker was arrested on an immi- gration warrant. The spot check in Pick- ering saw a variety of ve- hicles being pulled over at random for safety and emissions inspections. Some of the findings of the inspections were star- tling: • One taxi was found to have nothing but carpet between backseat passen- gers and the pavement. • Inspectors found that ladders strapped to the side of one vehicle pre- vented the wheels from turning properly. • And the inspections revealed safety problems with a wide variety of commercial and land- scaping vehicles, police said. Charges laid included 33 Highway Traffic Act in- fractions and three under the Environmental Pro- tection Act. Meanwhile, a trucker was arrested on an immi- gration warrant when it was found that his visa from Portugal expired in 2001. two weeks ago. “That simply isn’t safe,” Mr. Martin said of only having two full-time obste- tricians to perform deliv- eries. He said the hospital does have a strong team of family physicians who per- form deliveries in the hos- pital, but they can’t offer safe care without the backup of full-time obste- tricians. Once the staff and ad- ministration found out the hospital would be short- staffed it set a plan in mo- tion to transfer services to Centenary, as well as to find obstetricians to fill the void. “We never quit on trying to solve this. We had to act responsibly while not quit- ting,” said Julie Goldstein, program general manager for women and children’s general health. “We’re committed to 100-per cent coverage.” Dr. Logaridis said every- one worked collectively to make this happen. “We’re very happy be- cause we believe in this unit and we just wanted to be sure we could provide the care,” he said. The hospital has two new obstetricians starting in mid-August, one of whom is going to start ear- lier to help cover the schedule. Close matches between Pickering High and Pine Ridge squads By Al Rivett Sports Editor DURHAM — As contests go, they couldn't get any tighter on the cricket field. In test matches between Pine Ridge Secondary School of Pickering and Pickering High School of Ajax, the Pickering school earned a 78-77 victory in Game 1 on Monday afternoon. In the second match, Wednes- day, the teams battled to a 64- 64 draw. The teams, says Jason McKenzie, one of the organiz- ers, are preparing for a rubber match to be played in about two weeks, following the conclusion of exams at the two schools. But, most of all, the game represented a solid beginning to what could eventually turn into a high school cricket league in Durham Region. "It was a fantastic experi- ence," says McKenzie, a Picker- ing High graduate who's a sup- ply teacher in Durham Region. "Quite a few parents came out to watch. They played two closely contested matches and there was a lot of passion." Alyson Van Beinum, an Eng- lish as a second language teacher at Pine Ridge, says the game was a perfect launching pad for what she and others hope will be a cricket league for regional high schoolers. "We were really excited to have a Durham team to play," says Van Beinum, who helped organize a team from Pine Ridge three years ago. The team has played one other match, against a Scarborough school, during that time. "The kids are eager to play. That's how it started at Pine Ridge. We have a lot of kids from countries where cricket is played and they want to play here." She credits the Ajax Cricket Club for all its help in getting the Pine Ridge team up and running. The club offered help in selecting equipment and, for the matches, member Jeff Freshwater was on the bench, helping with the coaching du- ties. In Monday's game, Pine Ridge batted 78 runs for six wickets in the game that had a maximum of 20 overs (pitches). The top scorers were Leonard Hosey with 34 runs and Adeel Khan with 12. The top bowler was Ashan Sibera with two wickets for 17 runs. Meanwhile, Pickering High counted 77 runs for seven wick- ets. Top scorer was Ramandeep Nagi with 19 runs. The top bowler was Osama Ali with three wickets for 12 runs. Waquas Ali counted two wick- ets for 13 runs. In Wednesday's game, Pine Ridge scored 64 runs for nine wickets. Hosey was the top scorer with 21 runs. Vikas Lahar added 14. Top bowlers were Hosey, with three wickets for 14 runs, Mur- taza Zaida, two wickets for 13 runs and Saminda Jayasinghe, two wickets for 10 runs. Ali was Pickering High's top bowler with five wickets for seven runs. Fermullah Achki had two wickets for six runs. The top scorers were Abdul L atif with 16 runs and Ali with 11. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, June 13, 2004 PAGE 17 P Sports SUNDAY, JUNE 13, 2004 ✦ News Advertiser ✦ AL RIVETT, SPORTS EDITOR 905-683-5110 EXT. 250 They reign Monarchs’ juniors best in soccer... Squirt girls bat high tourney average AJAX — The Ajax Raiders squirt girls' (under-12) rep fastball team put forth a 'Klassic' effort to wrestle gold away from Kitchener in the final of a tournament in Brampton recently. No score was reported for the final of the 2004 Ching Spring Fling Tournament. The tournament victory qualified the Raiders to compete at the 2004 National Softball Association (NSA) World Series in Ohio in July. In other recent tournament ac- tion, the Raiders went undefeated and won the gold medal over Whitby in the final of the Cobourg event. In London at the Dorothy Hill Tour- nament, the Ajacians were undefeated going into the medal round. In the semifinals, the Raiders met the Water- loo Ghosts, losing 3-2. Next, they played Kitchener for the bronze medal, dropping a narrow 1-0 decision. My name is Jessica Simpson and I have been a News Advertiser carrier for about 3 or 4 years now. I enjoy my route. It is an easy way to make money. I have learned many important things like responsibility and how to manage my money. I usually get my papers done in about 20 minutes or so...except on Fridays it sometimes takes a little bit longer. I have only had one complaint in the whole time I have been a carrier. The money I get for collection pays for my cell phone and anything else I want like clothes or presents for my friends and family. I also saved enough money and put it in my bank account. My mom does my papers for me when I go away in the summer, or if I am sick. She also helps me put them together on Fridays. I talk to mostly all of the people on my route and they are very nice and compliment me on how they can always count on me for the paper and compliment me on a job well done. A.J. A/P PAGE 22 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, June 13, 2004 www.durhamregion.com Lawrence, Michael D. (WW II Veteran) -Lost his final battle with cancer at Soldier's Memorial Hospi- tal in Orillia on Sunday, May 30th, 2004, in his 81st year. He died comfortably in the presence of family and maintained his independence until the end. Pre- deceased by his brother Ron and sister Audrey in Britain, and his son-in law Herb Bauer. He will be keenly missed by his wife of 60 years Mina. Loving- ly remembered by his children Robert, Susan and Kevin, daughter-in-laws Deirdre and Sharon and his six grandchildren. Mike was a man who always turned his eyes to the heavens. As a young boy in the farming village of Headcorn, Kent, Britain, he looked into the skies and dreamed of flying. He be- came an R.A.F. cadet and found himself thrown into the cauldron of war and piloted four engine bombers over Hitler's Europe at the age of 19. He also flew transports during the Berlin Airlift. He was a mem- ber of 429 (Georgina) Wing of the Air Force Associ- ation of Canada and supported his grandson Mi- chael's Air Cadet 659 Squadron. After the war he came to Canada seeking opportunity and became President of Comfy Home Furnishings, a Division of Silknit Corporation. He and Mina spent many years travelling the world. He admired Terry Fox for his spirit and strength of purpose and participated in every single run and personally raised tens of thou- sands of dollars. He ran even when twice battling cancer and two months after a major operation. He continued to cast his gaze heavenwards and was fascinated with the celestial bodies above us and willingly shared his interest in the stars and planets and their beginnings. Mike was a gentle man and a gentleman, a man of uncommon integrity and will be terribly missed. He was cremated privately on June 1, 2004. A private church service will be held for family June 27, 2004 at BRECHIN UNITED CHURCH followed by a celebration of his life at 3:00 p.m. on the same date at the Lagoon City Community Centre where all his friends are invited to join his family in remembering a life well lived. Mike requested that no flowers be sent and that do- nations in memoriam be sent to the Orillia and Area M.S. Support Group c/o Jeannine Baker, Treasurer, 33 Johnson St., Orillia, Ont. The Ajacians played at the City of Vaughan Invitational (COVI) Tournament last weekend where they captured the championship crown with a spirited 4-1 win over the North Toronto Nitros in the final. Tyler Singh, Daniel Salmon, and Christo- pher Brill-Morgan scored. Brill-Morgan was voted the team's most valuable player for the tournament. The Thunder downed the Glen Shields Sun Devils 5-2 in a semifinal match. During round-robin play, Ajax played the Sun Devils, the Nitros and Spartacus. At the York Region Invitational, the Thunder fell short in a 2-1 loss to host Rich- mond Hill in Ajax's first tournament as a competitive team. Thunder's Obisike Okolie scored the lone goal. Salmon was voted the team's tournament MVP. Other team members are Javon Brown, Derek Cornelius, Shane Cunningham, Marcus Hudson, Mario Jovceuski, Andrew Leroux, Daniel Milton, Graydon Ronson, Malek Terry and Isaiah Wilson. The Thunder staff is head coach Justin Terry, assistant coach John Milton, techni- cal coach Tony Salmon and team manager Selma Singh.
