Pickering: If the kids are grown up and you no longer need the books they once read, here’s your chance to help others learn to read. The Durham District School Board, Durham Regional Police, Mc- Donald’s and Chapters have teamed up to hold a spring book drive in Durham. It’s May 17 to 24, when partici- pants are asked to drop off chil- dren’s books at police headquar- ters in Oshawa, the Ajax-Pickering Community Police Office in Picker- ing, Chapters in Oshawa or any Mc- Donald’s in the region. Suggested authors include Judy Blume, Ann Love, C.S. Lewis, Rose- mary Wells and J.R.R. Tolkien. The books will be distributed to Durham Region schools. Ajax:Help inspire young girls to be strong, smart and bold. Girls Incorporated of Durham (formerly known as the Big Sister Association of Ajax-Pickering) is holding a volunteer orientation ses- sion for women 21 years or older, who are interested in learning how they can make a difference. Female adult mentors are matched with girls between the ages of six and 16 on a one-to-one basis. Girls Inc. also offers group workshops and activities designed to “inspire all girls to be strong, smart and bold.” The session for new members or anyone wishing to get more in- formation is Thursday, May 27, at 7:30 p.m. It is at the Girls Inc. office, 1- 398 Bayly St., in Ajax, just east of Westney Road. A budget fee for all Liberals introduce host of new fees and premiums By Danielle Milley and David Blumenfeld Staff Writers DURHAM – The provincial Liberals’ first budget hit On- tario taxpayers where it hurts - their wallets. Speculation prior to yester- day’s budget predicted bad news and Finance Minister Greg Sorbara didn’t disap- point. The budget sees the re-in- troduction of the Ontario health premium, which is going to cost taxpayers be- tween $300 and $900 a year, as well as increases in fees for such items as driver’s licence renewals, and tax hikes on cig- arettes, beer and liquor. “We had to make two very important choices: the first to increase revenue and the sec- ond to balance the budget over a four-year plan,” Mr. Sorbara said in the legisla- ture. The health premium, which is to start coming off pay- cheques this summer, is ex- pected to generate $1.6 billion in the first year and climb to $2.6 billion by 2008. “Every single cent from this premium will be invested in health care,” Mr. Sorbara said. Pickering-Ajax-Uxbridge MPP Wayne Arthurs said part of the reason the government went with the premium in- stead of a general income-tax increase was so the money ✦See The page A5 Students face literacy limbo Public board worries about requirements By Mike Ruta Staff Writer DURHAM – Concerns are mounting that hundreds of Durham students will not graduate from high school be- cause they have not passed the provincial literacy test or course. The test was designed to as- sess students’ reading and writing skills to the end of Grade 9. Now, time is running out for the first cohort of stu- dents who must achieve a passing grade in order to graduate. If they have not passed the test by June, and also aren’t successful on a lit- eracy course introduced this school year, the students will not receive a diploma. The Durham District School Board released school- by-school results of last fall’s Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test at Monday’s board meeting. At virtually every Durham public high school, a higher percentage of students passed the test on their first try com- pared to last year. Board-wide, 80 per cent of first-time writ- ers were successful, five points higher than last year. Howev- er, 428 local students who had A parent first, an actor second Gino Marrocco’s held many roles, but none that he covets as much as being a father By Al Rivett Staff Editor PICKERING – During his six decades in the acting business, you could say Gino Marrocco has been a man of a thousand faces. Whether it’s playing hard- ened Mafioso Joey Two Tons in the feature movie ‘Crime Spree’ alongside Gerard Depardieu and Harvey Keitel, or as a par- ent of the ‘Oven Mitt’ in an Arby’s television spot, Mr. Mar- rocco’s career has taken in countless projects in film, tele- vision, radio and commercial work as well as acting, directing and writing for the theatre. The veteran Pickering char- acter actor has worked with many international stars, in- cluding Mickey Rooney, George C. Scott, Tom Cruise, and Dick Van Dyke. And, in a business that can be as cruel as it is fickle, he’s managed to carve out a successful career marked by longevity, profes- sionalism and, by his own ad- mission, a little luck. “I think it’s a combination of things,” says the personable actor of his success. “I’ve taken the job as an actor very serious- ly. When I’m at work I give it ab- solutely 100 per cent. I’ve al- ways continued to refine my craft, I’ve never laid back. I think acting, like any other skill, is something you’re al- ways trying to improve upon. I’ve always had great respect for the people I’ve worked with Pickering wants hospital action Asks that capital expansion approval be expedited By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PIC KE RING – The City wants the Ontario Ministry of Health to speed up ap- proval of the expansion at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pick- ering hospital. The motion by Ward 2 Re- gional Councillor Mark Hol- land urging the Province to expedite approval of the capital expansion so con- struction can begin was unanimously approved by council. “We’ve been pushing long and hard for an expansion of that site and now that we have a new government it’s a good opportunity to put a f irm date on it,” Coun. Hol- land said. The motion asked the ex- pansion be approved to en- sure construction begins no later than May 2005. “It’s important we reiter- ate our position and push to enforce the full-service hos- pital that we deserve and part of that is to expedite the capital changes to the site,” Coun. Holland said. L ast week Ajax council passed a similar motion ask- ing for approval to be fast tracked. Wa rd 3 Regional Council- lor Rick Johnson said Pick- ering council has been on record in support of the hos- pital for quite some time. ✦See Pickering page A5 ✦See Morrocco page A4 ✦See Trustees page A2 A.J. PROVINCIAL BUDGET 2004 Reversing car hit by truck on Hwy. 401 PICKERING –An 18-year-old man sus- tained life-threatening injuries in a se- rious collision in Pickering early Tues- day morning. Officers from the Whitby detach- ment of the OPP responded to a call at 2:19 a.m. for a serious collision in the Hwy. 401 eastbound express lanes, east of Whites Road. Police report the collision occurred when a Toyota Corolla apparently missed the transfer to the collector lanes and began reversing. The Toy- ota was struck by an eastbound transport truck. The 18-year-old was a passenger in the Toyota and was airlifted to St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. The male driver of the Toyota and another male passenger were trans- ported to hospital and both are listed in serious condition. The driver of the transport truck received minor injuries and was treat- ed and released at the scene. Anyone with information is asked to call the OPP at 905-668-3388. An additional 123 students were absent or deferred from writing it, and 154 were taking the literacy course. “What are we going to do with the children who don’t have diplomas?” asked Oshawa Trustee Kathleen Hopper. She fears that without a certifi- cate, “they really could be looking at a life of poverty.” Trustee Hopper noted that the pass rate for applied stream (not intending to pursue post-secondary studies), English as a second language and special educa- tion students were low, 55, 46 and 58 per cent, respectively. “We’re not talking about a few chil- dren; we’re talking about hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of stu- dents,” she says. “That’s a huge issue. There’s demographic groups now that are being denied a diploma.” Trustee Hopper says the Educa- tion Quality and Accountability Of- fice, which administers the test, has “an arrogance around academics.” Ajax Trustee Marilyn Crawford adds “this whole thing makes my blood boil. (EQAO) only cares about their bottom line number, their acad- emic marks, and they don’t care about special-ed kids,” she says. Whitby Trustee Elizabeth Roy called for a letter to EQAO, the min- ister of education and the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association, speaking to the inequities of the test for groups that have done poorly. “I think the ministry needs to re- peatedly hear this,” she said. Programs superintendent Luigia Ay otte said educators have repeated- ly brought such issues to the fore- front She told trustees four literacy courses were running in the first se- mester and “now we’re running full tilt” as they are the students’ last chance to meet the literacy require- ment. Selwyn Mundy said he found the pistol after retrieving belongings from an apartment Mr. Jacobson had lived in prior to his arrest in June 2000, in connection with a home inva- sion robbery. “There was a gun and a container of bullets,” Mr. Mundy said under questioning by prosecutor Paul Mur- ray. He told the Crown he eventually gave the gun and ammunition back to Mr. Jacobson. Mr. Jacobson and co-accused Sean Hall each face a charge of first-degree murder in connection with the Feb. 4, 2001, slaying of Roy Jones, who was scheduled to testify in the home-inva- sion trial against the men. Mr. Jones was shot four times and left for dead on an Ajax street just days before Mr. Jacobson and Mr. Hall were to appear in court on charges relating to the home invasion. The Crown alleges the two killed Mr. Jones to prevent him from testifying at that hearing. They are also charged with conspira- cy to commit murder. Mr. Jacobson, also known as Avi Mundy, has pleaded guilty to five charges relating to the home inva- sion. Mr. Hall has pleaded not guilty to all charges. Mr. Mundy said that after Mr. Ja- cobson’s arrest for the home invasion on June 19, 2000, he went to a Whitby apartment his stepson had shared with a girlfriend. Detectives were searching the apartment when he ar- rived, Mr. Mundy told the court. As he left, Mr. Mundy took several con- tainers of clothing and other items belonging to Mr. Jacobson. Shortly thereafter he returned to the building to retrieve more of Mr. Jacobson’s property from the build- ing’s lockers, he told the court. Among the items in the locker was a black duffel bag, he said. Mr. Mundy said he did not look into the bag for some time after retrieving it. Although he had sent a number of items to Mr. Jacobson at the man’s fa- ther’s house in Brampton, Mr. Jacob- son “wasn’t that interested” in the duffel bag, he said. When he finally did look inside the duffel bag, he found a fanny pack- style pouch, he told the court. “There was a gun in the pouch,” he said. “There was a gun and a contain- er of bullets. There were quite a num- ber of bullets and, as I recall, there were two missing.” Mr. Mundy said he confronted his stepson, who told him he was holding the firearm for someone else. “I told him there was a gun in his bag and he said it belonged to a friend of his - that was a package he was holding for some friends,” Mr. Mundy testified. “I think I remember asking him if that was the gun from the home invasion. He told me he had nothing to do with that.” Some time later, Mr. Jacobson came and picked up the duffle bag. But when Mr. Mundy went to visit him at Whitby Jail, Mr. Jacobson told him he had left the gun at Mr. Mundy’s Concord address. Mr. Mundy said he eventually gave the gun and ammunition back to Mr. Jacobson. “He said the gun belongs to a friend’s father and he wanted it,” Mr. Mundy said. Mr. Mundy said he was concerned about the gun and the company his stepson was keeping. “Those people who are dealing drugs has got no soul,” he said. The trial continues. and worked for. In my mind, acting is one of the most unpredictable, frail, scary professions to be in. Nothing would happen without some luck thrown in.” But, he’s proud to say, he works in the entertainment industry on his own terms. He remembers the advice of his actor father, Augusto, who urged him to never forget that it’s a job. “I grew up with that. It helped me maintain a very clear definition of what I was as an actor and what I do in real life. No matter what I did in acting, I never thought I was doing more than a job.” His love of acting is almost over- shadowed by his disdain for the so- called acting lifestyle, preferring in- stead to be grounded in the reality of family life and, since 1996, making his primary role that of a single parent to his son, Adam, now 16. In fact, through much of the past 10 years, he made a conscious decision to cut back on his career, performing only jobs that would keep him close to home, so he could focus on being a successful parent. “He was only seven at the time and I realized I couldn’t (work full time) and be a single parent, so I sat down with my agent (Rachel Neville-Fox) and told her I could only do small projects. I stuck with it until Adam was 13 and I don’t regret it for a second.” Mr. Marrocco has been around act- ing and actors all his life, beginning at age five. At that time, he was part of a theatrical group with his father, work- ing on a series of stage productions in Tor onto. His initial taste of acting led to sever- al CBC radio dramas with his father in the 1950s. It was his early experience that led him to declare at 13 that he would become a professional actor, something his parents were less than thrilled about. “My parents wanted me to be a doc- tor, a lawyer or a judge,” he laughs. One of his first acting jobs was in the CBC television series ‘Hawkeye and the Last of the Mohicans’. He played an Indian boy in the series filmed in the Rouge Valley. He recalls playing roles that called for him to be a juvenile delinquent through his teen years. He also found recurring work on the CBC series Hatch’s Mill in the ‘60s, a series set in the 1800s. He turned to theatre in the 70s, something he describes as his “starving artist” phase. He formed the ‘Backdoor Theatre’ in a small church in Toronto, remaining as artistic director for 17 years. During that time, he wrote three children’s plays ‘The Secret of the Magic Puzzle’, ‘The Spaceranger in Search of the Jumping Bean’ and ‘Eloise’s Christmas Present’ which have all been success- fully staged over the years. Mr. Marrocco was also at the fore- front of the Canadian actors’ union. He was on the board of directors of the Al- liance of Canadian Cinema Television and Radio Artists (ACTRA) for 32 years, serving for 15 consecutive years as the Toronto branch president and two years as national president. In the past several weeks, Marrocco’s work schedule has gone into overdrive. He’s taken on a guest role of George Leonardis in the CTV drama series Sue Thomas: F.B. Eye, which he’s cur- rently filming in Toronto. In addition, he’s continuing to work on the U.S. Showtime series ‘Street Time’ playing the recurring role of John Liberti, the father of the principal char- acter James Liberti, played by Scott Cohen. The series is currently filming its second season in Toronto. After an audition and a call-back, Marrocco has also recently been cast in Omni Television’s new daytime drama series ‘Bang!’ billed as a ‘cross-cultural’ serial drama. He also signed on to play an as-yet to be determined role in the Ron Howard-directed movie ‘Cinderel- la Man’, starring Russell Crowe, cur- rently in production in Toronto. “One benefit to being an actor is there’s no compulsory retirement age,” says Marrocco. “As long as I can mem- orize lines, as long as I’m physically able to do the job and as long as they still want you, I think I will always be looking forward to getting up at a ridiculous time of the morning and going to work.” We want to highlight the people who make our communities go. Ontario school boards will receive about $400 million more this coming school year in “stabilization funding,” money the government says will cover operating costs, school maintenance, textbooks and other resources. The rest of this year’s education funding increase, about $250 million, is to begin implementing the govern- ment’s plan to improve reading, writ- ing and math in the primary grades, and to introduce a 20-student class cap. Ontario Finance Minister Greg Sorbara said education funding would rise by $2.1 billion in four years. Local school board chairmen had barely scanned the budget informa- tion when interviewed, and are await- ing more detailed information from Education Minister Gerard Kennedy in about two weeks. “We’re still in tight times,” said Eliz- abeth Roy, chairman of the Durham District School Board. She says the $400 million “is cer- tainly going to help,” but hopes that the money is evenly distributed, ac- cording to student population, in- stead of winding up in the large urban centres like Toronto. Trustee Roy says the budget speech made no mention of what the government will commit to in terms of a raise for teachers - their contracts end this summer. While the $2.1-bil- lion promise is in line with what Mordechai Rozanski called for in his report to the previous government, she says it seems his recommenda- tions are falling by the wayside. “I’m disappointed that he has not recognized any of the recommenda- tions; it seems to have been just put aside,” says Trustee Roy. “He’s not taking into consideration the report that was put forward at that time.” She says the report, following ex- tensive stakeholder consultation, rep- resented “what school boards need.” Many school boards called for updat- ed benchmarks in the funding formu- la to reflect true costs. Mary Ann Martin, chairman of the Durham Catholic District School Board, liked the broad brush strokes in the government’s plan to increase student success in the primary grades. And while the board will make do with its share of the $400 million, it will not be an easy ride, with rising school maintenance and operating costs, she suggested. “It’s always that we’re giving up something to get something else,” said Trustee Martin. “It would be nice to do the things we’d really like to do in the system that have been put on the backburner.” Specifically, she would like to up- grade computers for both students and staff and boost funding to ele- mentary school art and music pro- grams, describing the latter as “icing on the cake.” Education officials offer lukewarm reception ‘Nuclear bomb of broken promises’ would go directly to health care. “The principal reason is that this particular health premium or tax will be shown on a separate line in the budget... This money will be ear- marked for expenses for health care in the budget,” said the Liberal MPP. “You can’t improve health care with- out new revenue sources.” Some critics, including NDP leader Howard Hampton, argue the new rev- enue sources are hitting modest- and middle-income earners hardest. Mr. Arthurs defended the move. “With any tax structure, those with the most amount of disposable in- come tend to pay less,” he said. In addition to the premium, the government is going to save money by not covering services such as chiro- practic sessions and eye exams. Progressive Conservative MPP Jim Flaherty (Whitby-Ajax) called yester- day’s budget “the nuclear bomb of broken promises. “This budget could have been done on the back of an envelope in half an hour. It’s the easy way out. It’s just ‘in- crease this tax, increase that tax,’...and let the people of Ontario pay for it, and let them all be dammed about all promises (they) made last year,” he said. “It depresses me more than anything else.” Mr. Flaherty said there is also very little money in the budget for colleges and universities, including the Uni- versity of Ontario Institute for Tech- nology. “UOIT is a great worry for me. I’m not raising the alarm yet, because hope springs eternal that the govern- ment will see that the engineering building must be built because the whole concept of the university was sophistication... particularly in the auto, nuclear engineering areas. “So, I’m not saying much about it now...but Durham Region looks like it’s pretty far down the list when it comes to this government. That wor- ries me a lot.” For Gary Polonsky, president of Durham College/UOIT, the budget is “fair in today’s circumstances. “I think it was gratifying to hear that we were one of the few ministries that were not asked to take a cut,” Dr. Polonsky says. “I think all Ontarians appreciate that the government has found itself in a bind with this... deficit.” Instead of a cut, the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities will get a $260-million operating bud- get boost. Mr. Arthurs said the budget ad- dresses the core commitments to health care and education that the Liberals made during the election. “I’m convinced and quite happy that we have a plan to meet the com- mitments we set out in our cam- paign,” he said. The Liberals have set out a four- year plan to cut what is now a $6.2-bil- lion deficit to $2.2 billion by next March and to eliminate it by 2008. PROVINCIAL BUDGET 2004 “We need all of our community leaders to come to the forefront of this issue,” he said. Mayor Dave Ryan has spoken with Health Minister George Smitherman about the issue. “This isn’t a new position of this council. It is a reiteration of the strong position this council has made in the past few years,” he said. The cost of the project is $47 million, with the community re- sponsible for $15 million and the ministry the remaining $32 mil- lion. So far nearly $12 million has been raised by the community. The 120,000-square-foot project includes a bigger emergency de- partment, new diagnostic imaging services and more mental-health facilities. The work involves building 80,000 sq. ft. of new space and ren- ovating 40,000 sq. ft. In an interview last week Katie Cronin-Wood, hospital spokesman, said the hope is to get ministry approval to do site work starting next year. The main con- struction would start in the fall of next year or spring 2006. “The target date for occupancy of the new construction is October 2007,” she said. “The renovation would be an- other year.” -with files from Keith Gilligan www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER,WEDNESDAY EDITION, May 19, 2004 PAGE A5 P 1-888-921-WSIB www.youngworker.ca Ta lk to your kids about how to stay safe at work. Hard times for good times First McGuinty budget taxes sin and health, axes therapies, helps municipalities DURHAM – For those Ontarians who find enjoyment in smoking and drinking, there are hard times ahead, especially if their habits warrant health care. Wrestling to reduce an almost $6.2-billion deficit, the provincial Liber- als brought down their first budget since being elected last fall. Following are some of the main highlights: • Reinstatement of OHIP premiums: Families with taxable income between $20,000 and $36,000 will pay an extra $300 per year; those who are taxed on incomes more than $200,000 will pay $900 annually. • The budget will spend $2.4 billion in new health-care initiatives, such as cardiac, cataract and cancer care, but will cut off provincial payments for chi- ropractors while limiting government funds for vision tests and physiothera- py. • Classroom size capped at 20 up to Grade 3 over the next four years. • Municipalities will receive two cents of the existing provincial gas tax over three years. The government will also cover 75 per cent of municipal public health costs by 2007. • Social assistance and Ontario Disability Support Program recipients will receive a 2 per cent increase on their monthly payments. • As of today, increased taxes on cigarettes will cost smokers $2.50 more for a carton of 200 cigarettes. Wine drinkers will pay an extra 15 cents for a 750 ml bottle on June 21, the same day a case of beer goes up by 45 cents. • Finance Minister Greg Sorbara forecast a deficit of $2.2 billion this year and decreasing every year until the 2007-08 fiscal year. ✦ Nuclear from page A1 WAYNE ARTHURS Liberals have ‘plan’ to meet commitments. P PAGE 6 NEWS ADVERTISER,WEDNESDAY EDITION, May 19, 2004 www.durhamregion.com Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's lawnmower Which of the Ten Com- mandments do you find hardest to keep? If you're like me it's the whole cov- eting thing. Either that or that business about turning your wheels into the curb when you park on a downhill. That one's pretty harsh, too. But the coveting is where I re- ally have a problem. I guess it's that age-old keeping-up-with- the-Hittites thing. You know, whenever one of the neighbours gets something new, it galls you just a little. We can't help it. For starters, we are, most of us, hardwired to be snoops. It's not our nicest trait by any stretch, but it's part of being human, I think. So, when that new lawnmower comes home next door, or that new deck gets built or the new car arrives, we know about it and it eats at us a little. Suddenly, our old lawnmower, deck or car, which previously was doing yeoman service, does- n't look quite so good anymore. We w onder what we're doing wrong that's preventing us from getting new stuff like that. Never mind the new stuff we brought home last week. That doesn't count. That was just stuff we needed. Then, because we're human and, more to the point, idiots, we start to think that the real question is not what we've been doing wrong, but rather what has he been doing right to get all that new stuff? What could he possibly be doing better than you? Nothing, obviously. So, just as obviously, he must be cheat- ing. He can't have earned that stuff. He must know somebody or be connected somehow. God, don't you just hate that? Isn't that just like them? (By the way, at this point it's no longer just him but his whole family who is ruining everything). It's obvious now why you don't have that new stuff. You play by the rules. Oh sure, you could have all that stuff, but you have to look at yourself in the mirror every morning. Thank God at least some of us can still do that. And then, what's really galling is when the guy lends you his new stuff, just to assuage the guilt that is rotting him from the inside out. You take it, sure, because someone has to be the bigger person, but you're not happy about it. So maybe you keep it a little longer than nec- essary, or maybe you never re- turn it, just to teach him a les- son. But his kind never learn. Brother, isn't that the truth. You soon realize that the best thing you could do for this guy would be to move to a different town, with a van full of his bor- rowed stuff. But then, you know what's going to happen. You'll just get nicely settled into your new place when somebody else will bring something new home. And it starts all over again. Why can't we all just get along, you wonder. You feel lousy. So, what do you do? You go out and buy yourself a new lawnmower. Sunderland resident Neil Crone, actor-comic-writer, saves some of his best lines for his columns. Editorial Editorials &Opinions WEDNESDAY, MAY 19, 2004 ✦ News Advertiser ✦ DAVID STELL, NEWS EDITOR, 905-683-5110 EXT. 249 Letters to the Editor If you want it, you’ll have to pay for it Liberal budget leaves Ontario with an empty feeling It wasn't so long ago that successive Progressive Con- servative finance ministers promised tax cut after tax cut, swearing we'd have balanced books and economic growth along the way. If some of those promises from ministers Ernie Eves, Jim Flaherty and Janet Ecker were part wishful thinking, part worldwide economic boom, Liberal Finance Minister Greg Sorbara threw cold water on them Tuesday. The new minister kicked off his first budget speech by telling us we'd all pay more in future for health care. Start- ing July 1, all those who make $20,000 or more per year will pay an annual health care premium. Fees range from $300 per year for those making $20,000 to $36,000, all the way up to $900 per year for those making over $200,000. Mr. Sorbara's logic on reinstituting this tax was simple. Health care has become the ever-hungry beast which con- stantly devours more and more of our tax dollars. Unless it gets a major boost from each taxpayer, public health care in Ontario will simply not be sustainable. Mr. Sorbara promised far more nurses, shorter waiting times, more hospital beds and a number of other key im- provements to health care. But he also took away optom- etry, chiropractic and physiotherapy services - except for seniors and, for optometry exams, for those under 20. Mr. Sorbara also promised to cap class sizes from JK to Grade 3 to 20 students per class over the next four years, to boost education funding by $2.1 billion over the next four years, to invest $1 billion in GO Transit, to kick in one cent per litre of gas to cities this October, 1.5 cents per litre in October 2005 and finally, two cents per litre in October 2006. The gas tax revenue is welcome news and will allow cash-strapped municipalities the funds they need to im- prove local and regional transportation systems. The deficit beast, which Mr. Sorbara claims is $6.2 bil- lion this year, will not be slain until 2007-08 or about the time the Liberals are trying to get re-elected. Mr. Sorbara predicts a deficit of $2.1 billion for the coming year and says the government will whittle it away year by year. The Liberals did inherit a financial and economic mess that was due in part to a miserable 2003 - think massive costs associated with SARS and the blackout - and could do little but look for revenues. But Mr. Sorbara's budget flies in the face of Premier Dalton McGuinty's repeated promises of no new taxes. If the last two Tory budgets de- livered good news for Durham, Tuesday's speech left us with an empty feeling. Government has let down Juno veterans To the editor: On June 6, 1944, Canadian sol- diers at Juno Beach paid the ul- timate price defending the prin- ciples of their country. Sixty years later, the survivors of that brutal event, no longer able to put up the fight they once did, are victims of the very system they fought to protect. Right now, a decision to in- crease the pensions of war sur- vivors is being ratified by this gov- ernment. A clear admission it has failed our veterans financially. Meanwhile, this same govern- ment has callously stipulated that all but 60 of these admitted- ly underfunded veterans must sponsor themselves if they wish to make one last visit to the site of their heroism. At the same time, as many as 70 politicians, bureaucrats and others, will be visiting Juno Beach using taxpayers' money while explaining in vague and disingenuous words why they are there to help. The moral ineptitude of this decision is staggering. The glory and heritage of this moment belongs to those who have earned and lived it. Juno Beach is no tourist attraction to be enjoyed at a whim by the rich and powerful. At least not when there are those who deserve to be recognized and rewarded for their heroism and bravery. It takes no courage to be indif- ferent to an 80-year-old hero who wishes only for one last moment of triumph. It is merely sad. A footnote to our governor general: Who do you think made it possible for you to parade around the world extolling the virtues of your lifestyle? What more sacrifice need they make to be worthy of your all too conspic- uous liberality? Brian Densham Ajax Residents must take pride in their appearance To the editor: It is surprising how some peo- ple seem to have so little pride in their property. It is so discouraging to see garbage bags in front of garages and on the curb long before pick- up day. Also it does not look good to see old trailers some- times covered with a tarp parked in driveways indefinitely. Another annoying and danger- ous problem is the number of cars parked halfway on drive- ways and halfway on pedestrian walkways. It seems garages are used mainly for anything other than cars. People should realize that un- less they keep a good and safe appearance to their property they are devaluing it and neigh- bouring properties. Motivating people to keep parks and streets around Pickering and Ajax clean and tidy is fine, but individuals should start with the appear- ance of their own homes. Bernadette White Pickering Police have more important work to do To the editor: Re: 'Bicycle helmets only mat- ter with enforcement,' editorial, May 5. It is true helmets are neces- sary for safety, and it's good that a law was passed. However, I don't believe that the police should become too involved. There are many other serious crimes that occur throughout Tor onto and the surrounding areas all the time. It's not that helmets aren't important, it's just that the big problems in so- ciety should be dealt with before the little ones. I think that making sure kids wear helmets should be the re- sponsibility of the schools to teach, and the parents to en- force. If a kid is injured because of his failure to wear a helmet, it shouldn't become the responsi- bility of the police. They have enough crimes to worry about. So teach your kids about hel- mets, and don't force the police to leave a crime scene to chase after some rider without a hel- met. Eickmeier and three team members won gold in the freshman team catego- ry at the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadel- phia, May 7 and 8. The famous event attracted more than 100 universities. The 19-year-old former high school student at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School just completed his first year at the Florida university. Af ter receiving an academic schol- arship, he went on to earn a 4.0 grade point average in marine and ocean engi- neering studies. The freshman decided to join the rowing team and went on to be named novice team captain. Every morning he would get up at 5 a.m., meet with his teammates, do stretches and drills and then row down the Indian River. "We've been practising since the middle of August," he said. During the months before the big competition, he and 13 other team- mates practised four to five hours per day. Despite the hard work, Eickmeier loves it. "It's a total body sport," he ex- plained, and added it's a great way for building muscle. Next year he plans to join the se- nior varsity rowers. Junior Monarchs roll to Notre Dame soccer tourney title PICKERING —The St. Mary Catholic Secondary School Monarchs junior girls' soccer team continued its solid season with a tournament victory last Friday. The Monarchs competed at the Notre Dame Junior Girls' Soccer Tour- nament in north Ajax. St. Mary won all three of its games, including a 2-0 victory over the Father Leo J. Austin Catholic Secondary School Wildcats of Whitby in the cham- pionship final. Jen Michalicka and Erin Small scored for St. Mary in the champi- onship game. St. Mary started the event with a 3- 0 victory over the host Notre Dame Cougars. Michalicka, Paige Murray and Small scored. Next, the Monarchs kicked their game into overdrive with a 6-0 romp over St. Stephen's. Cristin Allen led the way with a two- goal effort. Small, Michalicka, Stephanie Michalicka and Paige Heathcote added singles. St. Mary goalkeepers Alex Martinez and Stephanie Michalicka shared the tournament shutouts. The Monarchs now turn their atten- tion toward the Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) playoffs to commence this week. St. Mary finished with an undefeat- ed 7-0-1 record to nail down first place in the LOSSA West division standings. The Monarch’s lone tie came against the Uxbridge Secondary School Tigers, 0-0. St. Mary also amassed a solid goals for/against statistic during LOSSA regu- lar-season play, scoring 16 goals, while giving up only one. Melanie Cayford and Tina Doy coach the Monarchs. On track in Chattanooga Sports Briefs MAY 19, 2004 JUSTIN EICKMEIER Rower helps Florida university to victory. Mayne keeps turning heads on the track and in the classroom PICKERING —A Pickering athlete continues to excel on the track and in the classroom at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Despite a leg injury that ham- pered his training, Ian Mayne was able to enjoy a solid outdoor track and field season with the UTC Mocs. He completed his junior sea- son earlier this month with a sec- ond-place finish in the 3,000-metre steeplechase at the Southern Con- ference championships at Ap- palachian State University's Kidd Brewer Stadium. The 21-year-old finished behind teammate Linas Salkauskas, who won in 9:22.87, followed by Mayne in 9:24.10, a personal best time. Mayne was named an all-conference per- former for his second-place effort. Mayne also competed in the 5,000 metres at the conference champi- onships, finishing third in 15:13. Due to his injury, Mayne was able to compete in only one meet -- the Sea Ray Relays at the University of Tennesee's Knoxville campus -- prior to the conference champi- onships. There, Mayne placed third in the 3,000m steeplechase. Earlier in the season at the Southern Conference indoor cham- pionships at Johnson City, Tenn., Mayne finished third in the 5,000m in 14:57, taking 13 seconds off his personal best time. At earlier indoor meets, Mayne placed fourth in the mile event in 4:18 at the Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) Invitational. At the Lee Paddock Invitational at the University of Kentucky in Lexing- ton, he placed sixth in the 3,000m in 8:31, taking nine seconds off his pre- vious personal best. At the MTSU Opener, Mayne was third in the mile in 4:18. In addition to athletics, Mayne continues to shine in other areas at UTC. He was the recipient of the school's Scrappy Moore Award as the top UTC student-athlete who exhibits excellence in athletics, academics, and community in- volvement. Mayne was also chosen out of 1,500 student athletes from three NCAA divisions to go to the NCAA Leadership Conference at the Wide World of Sports in Disney Land for five days. In the classroom majoring in pre med, Mayne amassed a 3.589 grade point average for his last semester, with an overall GPA of 3.789, plac- ing him on the Dean's list and on the Southern Conference academic team. He'll be working at the Rouge Valley Centenary hospital in Scar- borough during the summer. Ian Mayne, left, competing for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Mocs at the recent Sea Ray Relays. Kostka is crisp in win over Klippers Local players help Aurora Tigers claim national tier II title By Al Rivett Sports Editor DURHAM — It was a shot just like the ones he had practised in his Ajax basement hundreds of times before. Moving in from the point, Aurora Tigers defenceman Mike Kostka faked a slapshot, moved around a Kindersley Klippers defender, and drifted a hard, rising wrist shot into the top corner of the net. The goal stood up as the game winner for the Tigers as they blitzed the Klippers of Saskatchewan 7-1 in the final of the 2004 RBC Royal Bank Cup national junior champi- onships in Grande Prairie, Alta. on Sunday night. "Usually, I would put it in low from the point, but I had the shot - - I knew where it was going to go the whole time," explains Kostka. In addition to Kostka, Kyle Aitken, of Pickering, played a major role in ensuring the title for the Tigers of the OHA Ontario Provin- cial Junior 'A' Hockey League's North Conference. Following the contest — televised nationally on TSN — the stick and puck Kostka used to score the game-winner were earmarked for the Hockey Hall of Fame where they'll be displayed, along with all the pucks that wound up in the net during the final. For Kostka, a 6-foot-1, 205-pound rearguard, the winner was one of two goals he scored in the game. He notes that he and his Aurora mates had the pedal to the floor for the entire contest, ensuring the Klip- pers couldn't get back up off the canvas. "We came out flying. We knew that this game was the one game we had to have our best game of the year. All season we worked toward playing a perfect game. We never re- ally gave them a chance." The Tigers made history with their victory, becoming the first ever OPJAHL team to capture the tier II national championship. It was also the first time an Ontario club had captured the Canadian tier II junior hockey crown since 1992. Although Kostka admits the Tigers didn't have history on their side, they were unfazed by the talk about the east traditionally being inferior to their western counter- parts. It was the perfect end to what can only be described as a magnificent season for the Tigers. Getting there and winning the cup was the team focus from the outset. "Our goal was not only to make it there, but to win it. It was always there in the back of our minds. Every game was like a stepping stone toward that goal." Kostka says the Tigers were sur- prised to find Kindersley in the final, as the players fully expected to suit up against the host Grand Prairie Storm. "Once Kindersley knocked (Grand Prairie) off, it kind of boost- ed our confidence. We knew we could beat them. Everyone just as- sumed we would be playing Grand Prairie and their fans would be against us. We were prepared for that. I think if we would have played Grand Prairie it would have been a better game." Aurora vaulted into the final after dispatching the Nepean Raiders to the sidelines with a 7-2 semifinal victory last Saturday. Aitken, who's 6-foot-2 and 180-pounds, recorded two assists in the win. The Tigers posted a 3-1 record in the five-team round-robin play to earn a berth in the semifinals. After losing its opening game 4-2 to the Storm, Aurora rallied to win three consecutive games. In Game 2, the Tigers clipped the Nanaimo Clippers of B.C. 4-2. Kost- ka had three assists. Aurora blitzed the Klippers 5-0 in Game 3, with Kostka again deliver- ing an assist. In their final round-robin contest, the Tigers improved their record with a 3-1 victory over the Nepean Raiders. To qualify for cup play, the Tigers claimed the OPJAHL champi- onship with a 4-2 best-of-seven se- ries victory over the St. Michael's Buzzers. They then competed in the Dudley Hewitt Cup in North Bay against teams from northern Ontario. There, the Tigers went un- defeated en route to the champi- onship, defeating the host Sky- hawks 5-1 in the final. Aurora emerged with a 76-7 over- all record during the 2003-04 sea- son. NOTES:A number of former Ajax Axemen were among the players on the Tigers roster. On the team were Kost ka, Jesse Ol den and Alex Lalonde... KYLE AITKEN Defenceman solid for Aurora Tigers. DURHAM — The Ajax-Pickering Rock is still searching for an elusive first win in Ontario Lacrosse Associa- tion senior 'B' league action. Most distressing for the Rock — in their sophomore season — is the con- tinued lack of scoring punch, which was evident yet again in the club's fourth loss of the season, this time on the road to the Arthur Aces Saturday. In a battle of winless clubs, Arthur prevailed 7-6. The Aces moved to 1-3. With the contest tied 3-3 after the first period and 4-4 after the second, the Rock vaulted into the lead with a fluke goal by Brad Cann early in the third. His errant shot caromed off the backboards, hit the back of the Ace's goaltender and went into the net. The Rock hoped the third period lead would be a sign the club would break out of its prolonged scoring malaise. The scoring omen, however, was a false one. The Rock gave up a power-play marker as Arthur evened the score and the Aces then took a two-goal lead. Ajax-Pickering was able to get one back, but couldn't add the equal- izer. Rock head coach Paul St. John says it was his club's best effort of the sea- son. "Everything was there for us on Sat- urday, except for goals. We have to just keep plugging away and hopeful- ly we'll have a breakthrough game soon rather than later," he says. Newcomer Mark Craig — acquired from the Brooklin Redmen of the OLA Major Series in a cash deal last week — paid immediate dividends, scoring two goals, added an assist and proving to be one of the more danger- ous offensive players on the floor, says St. John. "He's a major acquisition for us," he says. "He put up really good numbers in junior 'A' with Whitby last year. He wants to play here; he has lots of friends on the team." Craig was one of the players the Rock acquired in separate deals last week. The club also shuffled Shawn Cardy and Brandon Laforme off to the Brooklin Merchants for D.J. Cox, D.J. Dunn, the rights to Stefan Hewak, and cash. Also scoring was rookie forward Cody Laforme, who bagged a pair of goals, and John Derochie. Assisting were Paul O'Grady with three, Jay Preece, Cann, Derochie and Jamie Lumsden. It’s the first of two shows, the second is May 27, with performances from members of the music department. AJAX –Up against international competition, the senior and junior concert bands at J. Clarke Richard- son hit all the right notes. The two student bands earned first place in their categories at the International Music Festival, in Or- lando, Florida recently. Students in the school's music program trav- elled south for a one-week trip to compete against hundreds of schools from all over the world. Along with the two bands' first- place finishes, the choir won second place, said Amy Dryden, a saxo- phone player in the senior band. Now the bands are back and ready to show off their talents. The school music program has two shows planned to showcase their award-winning music. On Thursdays, May 20 and 27, the two concert bands and choirs hold 7:30 p.m. performances at the school, 1355 Harwood Rd., N., in Ajax. Tickets are available at the door and $3 for students and se- niors, or $5 for adults. "It's just something to turn your head," said Jack 'tMannetje, music department director. He said on both nights students will play music from TV and films, as well as contemporary pieces. For more information, call 'tMan- netje at 905-619-9571. Black and white and read - all over! J. 'Exposure' features eight pieces on display at the centre, 1675 Mont- gomery Park Rd., in Pickering, Mon- days to Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. between May 10 and July 12. It's Chamberlain's second year as a member of the PineRidge Arts Council. Even though he considers art a hobby, he's been painting for a number of years. His show pieces took nearly a month to create. "If something interests me I'll paint it," he said. "I like to expose myself to different things, whatever is eye-catching." He likes using a wide-range of vi- brant colours and prefers to use only oil. "For me it's an easy medium to work with," he said.
