An Ajax man died in hospital following the incident. Charges dropped in fatal college pub shooting By Lesley Bovie Staff Writer DURHAM –Attempted murder and assault charges have been dropped against six men being held by police in connection with a fatal shooting at Durham Col- lege last weekend. Two of the men have been re- leased from police custody, with the remainder facing new charges of either breach of proba- tion, attempting to obstruct jus- tice, or obstructing police. Matthew Okoko, 23, of Em- pringham Drive, in Toronto was released at a bail hearing Wednesday. All charges were dropped. A 17-year-old male from Toron- to, who was charged earlier with breaching probation, was also re- leased into his mother’s custody on $1,500 bail. One by one, the six men ap- peared separately in bail court, each wearing shackles, white T- shirts and grey pants. The 17- year-old wore a maroon-coloured tracksuit. Durham Regional Po- lice Sergeant Paul Malik said there isn’t enough evidence yet to warrant murder charges. “All the charges in relation to the shooting have been with- PICKERING TOYOTA 557 KINGSTON RD., PICKERING (905)420-9000 THE LARGEST TOYOTA DEALER IN DURHAM! That’s the scenario laid out by Crown attorney Paul Murray in his opening address Wednesday to the jury in the first-degree murder trial of Cosmo Jacobson (aka Avi Mundy) and Sean Hall. Mr. Jacobson and Mr. Hall also face a charge of conspiracy to commit murder. However, shortly after the jury was seated, Mr. Jacobson, through his attorney Douglas Usher, changed his not-guilty plea to guilty in five charges relat- ed to the home invasion. He also tried to admit a plea of guilty to manslaughter in Mr. Jones’ death, but Mr. Murray rejected the plea. Mr. Hall has pleaded not guilty to all seven charges he’s facing. The trial is expected to take ap- proximately four months, Mr. Murray told the jury. In his opening, the Crown con- tends Mr. Jacobson, Mr. Hall and another man, who has been given immunity, committed a home in- vasion in Pickering on Major Oaks Drive June 16, 2000. Red-light cameras for ‘public safety’ says Ryan DURHAM –Mayors across the Region say gun safety isn’t a problem in Durham, but that atten- tion is needed on the streets. Five of Durham’s may- ors and Regional Chair- man Roger Anderson at- tended a summit with Toronto Mayor David Miller and 22 of their GTA counterparts Monday, the f irst major gathering of leaders since the Province disbanded the Greater Toronto Services Board in 2001. One of their recommen- dations was asking their police chiefs to conduct safety checks on security systems at gun clubs and stores that sell firearms. “I feel our local gun stores and gun clubs are very responsible and safe and are not the problem,” said Scugog Mayor Mari- lyn Pearce. “This issue and its im- pact on communities in the GTA is the very rea- son it is important to meet in these forums as there is a very large differ- ence in rural and urban problems with guns.” Oshawa Mayor John Gray agreed, saying the issue was more important to Toronto. Whitby Mayor Marcel Brunelle said he was “a little skeptical about the effectiveness” of security checks, but said they would be no different than inspectors going into restaurants to ensure food safety. “We don’t have any gun stores or clubs...at the moment that we have problems with,” said Durham Regional Police Chief Kevin McAlpine, adding he’s more con- cerned with the number of residential break-ins where guns are not stored correctly and are stolen. The Ontario Provincial Police is responsible for the commercial side of g uns, Chief McAlpine said. The mayors’ other main concern was road safety, recommending photo radar and red-light cam- eras. “Red doesn’t seem to mean stop anymore, it means speed up and go through it,” said Uxbridge Mayor Gerri Lynn O’Con- nor. Dangerous Durham in- tersections highlighted by the mayors were Brock and Toronto streets in Uxbridge, Garden Street and Hwy. 2 in Whitby, Simcoe Street and Hwy. 7A in Port Perry and areas around play- grounds and schools in Oshawa. “Speeding and running red lights, the police sim- ply don’t have the mem- bers to enforce it,” said Ajax Mayor Steve Parish. “More people are killed and injured this way (traffic accidents) than by guns and we’ve got to deal with it.” Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan said the red-light cameras were not looked at as a way for cash- strapped municipalities to make money, but “ex- clusively for public safe- ty.” Other recommenda- tions from the summit in- cluded: • A down payment from the Province for a new deal for cities to address transit, roads and bridges; • “Sustainable revenue” sources from the senior levels of government; • A review of the Munic- ipal Act to eliminate “un- necessary provincial man- agement of municipal af- fairs; • Provincial money for transit, including the promise of gas-tax fund- ing. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, April 9, 2004 PAGE 3 P Spring into action NOW! Within min- utes of fleeing the home, Mr. Jacobson was seen at the Metro East Trade Cen- tre, using a bank machine. Mr. Jacobson was at- tempting to withdraw money from accounts with the debit and credit cards, Mr. Murray stated. While at the trade centre, now closed, the Crown al- leges Mr. Jones, a security guard there, saw Mr. Jacob- son using the bank ma- chine. The two had attended Pickering High School at the same time and were ac- quainted with each other. Mr. Jones knew the accused as Avi Mundy. When he returned to the car, Mr. Jacobson allegedly told Mr. Jones not to tell anyone he had seen Mr. Ja- cobson. “It’s not unusual for peo- ple to come in and use the bank machine, but it is un- usual for them to say ‘don’t say I was here’,” Mr. Murray stated. When Durham Regional Police showed Mr. Jones a photo lineup, which includ- ed Mr. Jacobson, Mr. Mur- ray said Mr. Jones pointed to the accused and said “that’s him, that’s him, 100- per cent guaranteed.” Mr. Murray outlined the Crown’s case in how the two accused went about trying to f ind Mr. Jones, such as computer searches to find his address. At the time of the mur- der, Mr. Jones lived with his parents and two brothers. They had just bought a home on Twilley Lane in December 2000. Mr. Murray described Mr. Jones as “a private per- son” who worked five or six days a week, he didn’t drink, use drugs or gamble. “When he did go out, he went to movies with his brother.” Mr. Jones also gave money to his parents to help buy the new house. Three days before the preliminary hearing was to start into the home inva- sion, Mr. Jones was mur- dered. He was returning home at around 10 p.m. Fe b. 4, 2001, when confront- ed by his assailant. Mr. Jones tried to flee, but was shot twice. When his assailant caught up to him, he shot him in the chest and then when Mr. Jones was on the ground, shot him behind his left ear. “It’s the Crown’s position Cosmo Jacobson, Sean Hall and one other man were in- volved in the home rob- bery,” Mr. Murray said. “Roy Jones was murdered because he was to testify at the preliminary hearing. “Mr. Jacobson and Mr. Hall planned the murder and carried it out.” He said primarily circum- stantial evidence will be used to prove the case against Mr. Jacobson, such as DNA evidence. “Mr. Hall’s case is entirely different,” Mr. Murray stat- ed. “There’s direct evi- dence” including state- ments Mr. Hall made to un- dercover police officers in July 2001. In the state- ments, Mr. Hall is alleged to have said he was involved in the planning of the murder and drove the getaway car. None of Mr. Murray’s comments have been proven in court. The trial continued Thursday. We’re still consider- ing this a random act of vi- olence,” he told reporters outside the courtroom. “We’re still investigating. We don’t know if there are any other suspects but we’re checking all possibili- ties,” Sgt. Malik said. Eugene Moses, 21, of Ajax, died in hospital Tues- day from gunshot wounds to the chest, making Satur- day morning’s shooting at a campus pub the second homicide of the year in Durham Region. A 23-year-old Oshawa man, a bouncer at the pub that night, was shot in the leg and has since been re- leased from hospital. Witnesses said the inci- dent began with a pushing and shoving match be- tween several young men at the entrance of the pub. It ended with three gunshots fired and suspects spotted fleeing in a stretch limou- sine. Police caught up to the limousine near Kennedy Road and the 401 in Toron- to, arresting the six men in- side. One of the suspects was discovered with a gun- shot wound to the leg and was taken to hospital and later released into police custody. Police originally charged all six suspects with attempted murder and aggravated assault be- cause it was unclear as to who pulled the trigger. Those charges were with- drawn at a bail hearing Wednesday, where the men each appeared separately. All six have been ordered by the court not to commu- nicate with one another ei- ther directly or indirectly. The 17-year-old Toronto teen was placed on a 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. curfew and or- dered to stay out of Durham Region. Milton Jackson, 31, of Commonwealth Drive in Tor onto, faces one count of breach of probation and was scheduled to appear April 8 (after press dead- line). This is another blatant and disap- pointing attempt by the right-wing media to mislead and misinform the Canadian electorate. First, the headline suggests a plurality of choices, but the article only refers to an electoral choice between the right-wing Liberals and the right-wing Conserva- tives. That is no choice. Second, it claims the interest of the electorate is important because only when the people have a real choice can they pick from the vision of more than one party. The visions of both the right- wing Liberals and Conservatives, which have governed us both provincially and federally at various times, have led us to the following conditions: • Approximately one-and-a-half to two million children living in poverty in Cana- da, one of the richest countries in the world; • Homelessness and inadequate hous- ing, reaching crisis proportions; • Out of control pollution - smog is killing thousands of Canadians each year; •A proliferation of food banks from coast to coast because Canadian workers are not earning a living wage; and •A lack of adequate and affordable day-care programs. Fur ther, Canada's contribution to Third World development, peacekeeping, environmental pollution control, finan- cial assistance to the world's poorest na- tions, etc. is the lowest of the 22 wealthi- est countries in the world. If it can be said that the effectiveness of a nation's government is judged by how well it takes care of the nation's poorest and most vulnerable members, then the right-wing Liberals and Conservatives have lost the moral right to govern. Perhaps the only and real choice is the one this right-wing column dismisses as a 'non-issue.' Hopefully, ordinary Canadian workers will choose the NDP, a good choice. Herman H. Editorials &Opinions FRIDAY, APRIL 9, 2004 ✦ News Advertiser ✦ DAVID STELL, NEWS EDITOR, 905-683-5110 EXT. 249 Editorial Letters to the Editor Time to go to the polls Mr. Martin Let the people have a chance to decide their government When you've made as many changes as Paul Martin has in his brief time as prime minister, it's time to take your government to the people. Though he only became Prime Minister in December, you could argue that the government of Paul Martin and Jean Chrétien share only one thing: the name Liberal. That's the way Mr. Martin wants it, of course. In the final two or three years before Mr. Chrétien finally left office, Mr. Mar tin was champing at the bit to take over and make over the Liberal party in his image. That has meant the end of the road for such longtime Lib- eral stalwarts as John Manley, David Collenette and Sheila Copps. Mr. Martin has properly tried to take the Quebec-centric shine off his Liberal government and has promoted the likes of Saskatchewan's Ralph Goodale (finance) and Alberta's Anne McLellan (deputy PM). He's trying to distance himself and his government from the federal sponsorship scandal, with mixed results. Mr. Martin has presented a throne speech and budget for public consumption and has been busy making sure his type of candidate is nominated in ridings across the country. He has presented a vision; now it will be up to the people to tell him what they think of that vision. In the meantime, the opposition parties have been busy getting their campaigns in high gear. The Conservatives have finally settled on Stephen Harper as their leader and are preparing a platform that blends Canadian Alliance and Progressive Conservative principles under one tent. The NDP, under Jack Layton, have lured back such old warriors as Ed Broadbent, and seem more ready than ever to run a solid, competitive campaign. The Bloc Quebecois, ex- cited by Liberal fumbling in Quebec, are ready to take on Mr. Mar tin. The current mandate was Jean Chrétien's last, not Paul Mar tin's first. More than three and a half years in, it's time for Mr. Martin to let the people decide. He should call an election before the end of this month so we can move forward. You could draw comparisons between St. Mary Catholic Secondary School and the so-called 'Dookies' of Duke Univer- sity in North Carolina. To wit, they're a school everyone loves to beat; they're revered for a school tradition that covets athletic achievement, yet there's a whiff of envy in the air over their successes; when it comes right down to it, it's a school that always seems to win. Those who know Durham Region high school sports know that win- ning and St. Mary have become synonymous. In fact, over the past several years, the school has be- come a regional and, in some cases, provincial power. This year was no exception for the Monarchs who've reigned supreme on a number of fronts. Of late was the magnificent run to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) 'AAA' gold medal by the St. Mary girls' hockey team. Playing minus their starting goaltender Quinn Caggiula and entering the tourna- ment as the third seed, despite being the defending champions, the Monarchs clearly willed their way to the championship. The Monarchs boys' hockey team, although not as successful as the distaff side of the school, also put together a solid campaign. The boys' wrested the Durham title away from the Pickering High School Trojans and advanced to the OFSAA quarter-finals before losing to red-hot Orangeville. The Durham champion boys' basketball team also entered un- charted territory at the OFSAA 'AAAA' championships in Guelph late last month. Seeded 14th out of 20 teams, the Monarchs made a strong run through the tourna- ment, upending two higher seeds before running up against the two- time defending champions from Eastern Commerce in Toronto in the quarter-finals, who went on to win the championship. Although they lost, the Monarchs still earned a measure of respect. The Monarchs are and remain a power in Durham Region senior football. The school went undefeat- ed through the regular season en route to a fifth consecutive Durham title last fall. The St. Mary senior boys' soccer team, too, won the Durham Region 'AAA' title over Dunbarton last October, compiling an unbeaten 11-0-1 record in the process. They'll now represent the region at the OFSAA tournament hosted in Pickering June 3 to 5. Clearly, the Monarchs are reign- ing over Durham Region high school sports. Things got off to a good start during March break, when 1,000 pounds of food items were donated during a free skate in Oshawa, sponsored by the Op- timist Club of Oshawa. Items the drive hopes to col- lect include peanut butter, ce- reals, juices, powdered milk, canned fruits, vegetables, meats, fish and soup. Collection bins can be found at local A&P, No Frills, Food Basics, Price Chopper, IGA, Loblaws and Dominion grocery stores throughout Durham Re- g ion. Area fire stations will also accept donations. Evelyn Smith moves into executive director’s chair By Stephanie Mason Special to the News Advertiser AJAX – Evelyn Smith is a big fan of community involvement. Which makes her an appropri- ate fit as the new executive direc- tor for the Community Develop- ment Council of Durham. Formerly known as the Social Development Council of Ajax and Pickering, the organization pro- vides resources for Ajax and Pick- ering residents and those across Durham Region. Among the or- ganizations they offer resources to are Housing Help Durham, Funding Connections, and the Denise House. Since Feb. 2, she’s been busy planning projects from Trillium Grants to the Annual General Meeting in April. Mrs. Smith takes over from Colleen Jordan, who was elected to Ajax council in last November’s municipal election. “It’s very fast-paced,” said Mrs. Smith, whose job also includes public relations. “I am someone who oversees all the programs that are functioning here.” Mrs. Smith’s resume is a long one. She has been a nurse for 38 years, an executive director for the Victoria Order of Nurses for Durham, a representative on the Durham College board of gover- nors for six years, and a teacher there for 13 years. She is currently vice-president for Big Brothers and Sisters of Ajax and Pickering. She’s glad to be with colleagues in her new job. “All the non-profit agencies do a really good job,” she said. And according to the people who’ve dealt with her, the feeling is mutual. “When you think of VON, you think of Evelyn,” said Dawn Stew- art of the VON Durham branch. “She’s a bottomless well, because she keeps on giving.” “Evelyn is a special person, as I came to learn in the six years when she served as a governor of Durham College,” said Gary Polonsky, president of the college and the University of Ontario In- stitute of Technology. “If the whole world was like her, there’d be no wars, no homelessness, there only would be peace, justice, and love. Evelyn works tirelessly and effectively on behalf of oth- ers.” ‘Tireless’ worker takes over Social Development A/P PAGE 8 NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, April 9, 2004 www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER SUCCESS STORY Hello, my name is Darian Bygrave. I’ve been a carrier for 6 months now. I have to say it was very cold in the winter time and I am looking forward to the summer. I have met a few of my customers and they are always very nice to me. They always tell me that I’m doing a good job. I play soccer and the walk is good for my leg muscles. My route is not very long and my parents help me with the paper. When I collect I keep 20% of the money, (I hide it. My mom didn’t know that until she read this). My mom puts the rest in the bank. I told her I will get my own car so I can drive myself to soccer. I guess I’ll be doing this route for a long time. I have learned how to be responsible even though I’m only 10 years old. I’m sure when the weather gets nicer I will meet more friendly customers and I will collect more often. A special thanks to my customers. You have been great! Darian Bygrave. Units offer another tool when applying first aid By Jessica Verge Special to the News Advertiser It’s a situation seen on every medical drama on television. A patient has a heart attack and is brought back to life by a team of doctors who shock the chest with paddles. But it’s not just doctors saving lives anymore - at least not if Velma Owens has her way. Automated External Defibrilla- tors, or AEDs, are user-friendly versions of the devices seen on TV. They’ve been popping up in public places across North America for over a decade and now, thanks in part to Ms. Owens, Durham Region will be adding more to its collec- tion. “Seems to me it’s a good thing,” says Ms. Owens, who recently do- nated $5,000 to the Durham Car- diac Safe Community Program to- ward the purchase of two new AEDs. “If you can give your fellow man a second chance at life, why not?” The 83-year-old Pickering resi- dent, grandmother and retired bakery supervisor had noticed re- cent stories surfacing in the news- papers about everyday people sav- ing lives with the help of an AED. Ms. Owens was determined to help out, but no one she contacted, including her doctor and pharma- cist, knew how she could get in- volved. Finally, a news article on AEDs introduced her to the Cardiac Safe Community Program, whose goal is to create awareness about the de- f ibrillators and get them into pub- lic places. The program partnered Ms. Owens with Dunbarton High School in Pickering, which is rais- ing funds to pay for half of one AED that will be kept at the school. The program found Dunbarton to be a suitable place for an AED, because of its big population and public swimming pool. It is still undecided who will share the cost of the sec- ond AED but it will also be located in Pickering. The need for AEDs is something Ms. Owens can personally under- stand. She suffered a mild heart at- tack over 10 years ago and watched her husband of 46 years endure by- pass surgery and battle heart prob- lems until he died six years ago. Now people in similar situations can rely on AEDs to help them in an emergency. And while places with AEDs have individuals trained in their use, anyone could operate the device if needed. When the AED’s box is opened, an alarm sounds. When it’s re- moved from its box, 911 is automat- ically contacted. The device then guides the user in how to adminis- ter the shock, both verbally and through diagrams. In a hospital, the doctor would analyze a heart monitor to assess the patient’s need for a defibrilla- tor. With the AED, however, that’s not necessary. “The machine makes the deci- sion on whether or not the shock is appropriate,” says Jim Harris, manager of quality-assurance pro- grams for the Base Hospital Ad- vanced Life Support Program for Durham Region. Early defibrillation, coupled with early access to 911 and CPR, could mean the difference between life and death, as cardiac arrest vic- tims are more likely to survive when these steps are taken. Every minute that defibrillation is delayed, there is a 7- to 10-per cent decrease in the chances of sur- vival. “It’s part of first aid now,” says Bob Brunet, clinical coordinator of community programs. Defibrillators have been evolving in North America for the past 50 years. Automated versions were de- veloped in the early 1990s and On- tario welcomed its first in 1999. The concept reached Durham Region two years ago through the Cardiac Safe Community Program, which put the machines in the Whitby Recreation Centre and Iroquois Park. Three weeks after one was es- tablished at the Whitby Recreation Centre, it was used to save a man’s life. In the two years AEDs have been in place throughout Durham Re- gion, there have been eight lives have been successfully saved using . A plan to install AEDs in Oshawa is currently under way and they will be available at municipal buildings and recreation centres in the com- ing months. Ms. Owens, who left provisions in her will to donate for further AED purchases, is glad to have more of these machines in the area but she hopes her generosity will also raise awareness about these devices, making it easier for those inspired to contribute to do so. DURHAM –Local residents are invited to get their bicycles out for a little fresh air, exercise and fun. The Touring Concept Cycling Club is a Durham-based organi- zation with a commitment to f itness and camaraderie. “For me, it was a chance to enjoy bicycling in a supportive environment with people who promote ongoing learning about riding distance and im- proving skills,” says Rich Helms, a club member since 2002. The group currently consists of 34 members ranging in age from 30 to 70. An emphasis is put on fun and fitness over speed. “I’m not interested in racing,” says Mr. Helms, “and I was im- pressed with how caring every- one is. Members are encour- aged to progress at their own speed, and no one is ever left behind. These are great people who focus on learning and helping one another.” The club meets every Sunday morning in the spring, summer, and fall at a previously arranged starting location. The group travels at an average rate of 20 kilometres an hour, keep- ing the speed comfortable and manageable. The goal of many members is to work up to the Century Ride, a ride of either 100 km or 100 miles in one day. There is no pressure to per- form, only to enjoy. APRIL 10 SAT. APRIL 10 SAT. APRIL 10 9AM - 9AM - 9AM - MIDNIGHT MIDNIGHT MIDNIGHT Crohn’s and Colitis Chapter has busy spring planned By Stephanie Mason Special to the News Advertiser DURHAM – The Crohn’s and Coli- tis Chapter of Ajax and Pickering is preparing for one busy spring. Already, the organization has scheduled three major events, in- cluding an information session with Mount Sinai doctors, a char- ity barbecue, and a walk-a-thon through Pickering’s historical neighbourhoods. The Crohn’s and Colitis Foun- dation of Canada began in 1974 when a group of concerned par- ents wanted to help raise money for medical research and public awareness for inflammatory bowel disease. Today, there are more than 90 local chapters, con- sisting of thousands of volunteers and members. Inflammatory bowel disease is meant to describe either Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. Both conditions affect the digestive system and cause intestinal tis- sue to become inflamed, sore and even bleed. Symptoms range from cramping to abdominal pain. Un- fortunately, there’s no cure and it’s not known what causes it. Laura-Lee Hogan, volunteer services co-ordinator with the CCFC’s Eastern District, said more than 150,000 Canadians have IBD and the number is in- creasing. “Generally people between the ages of 25 to 45 and 55 and up are more predominant in getting the disease,” she said. In addition, women are more likely to get the disease than men. So, in order to raise public awareness and funds, the chapter is busy planning an information session for Thursday, May 13 at the Pickering Public Library’s central branch at 7 p.m. The ses- sion features two special guests, Dr. Mark Silverberg, a clinical gas- troenterologist and Dr. Robert Maunder, a psychiatrist in the psychosomatic medicine pro- gram, both from Mount Sinai Hospital. Nationwide, all M and M Meat Shops are hosting a charity bar- becue Saturday, May 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. “M and M Meat Shops is our best friend sponsor because all the proceeds go 100 per cent to- wards our charity,” said Ms. Hogan. Last year the CCFC’s goal was to raise 1.1 million nationwide from the barbecue, but the flip- ping went well past the $1.2 mil- lion mark. The organization is hoping to do even better this year. Finally, approximately 65 Ajax and Pickering residents are ex- pected to participate in the CCFC’s Annual Heel ‘n’ Wheel-a- thon June 19 and hopefully more residents will be interested. “Our goal in Pickering and Ajax is to raise $10,000,” she said. About three years ago, Ajax and Pickering split from the Durham group and held its own Heel ‘n’ Wheel-a-thon. For more information on the events and donating, call Ms. Hogan at 1-877-338-7426 or e-mail lhogan@ccfc.ca. A lack of funding may put an end to the presentation of William Shakespeare's plays in outdoor settings throughout Durham Re- gion and beyond by the young, professional, touring drama troupe. "What should be a cele- bration for us, isn't," said artistic director Jeremy Smith, who added the com- pany is short $70,000 for the season. "Without the necessary funding, we will have no choice but to put our dreams to rest for good." In its 10th season, Drift- wood is set to reprise its in- augural season of 1995, when 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' was per- formed in Oshawa, Whitby, Bowmanville and Port Perry. The commemorative season will see the comedy presented in those four original communities and Ajax, Pickering, Cobourg, Port Hope and Peterbor- ough. That's as long as suffi- cient funding can be found by May 15, Smith said. If the support isn't there, the Driftwood Theatre will close down the summer tours for good, he said. "We are desperately look- ing for the support of the community to ensure that our 'Dream' doesn't die. If someone is tempted to think that their contribu- tion, no matter how small or large, won't make a dif- ference, we are encouraging them to think otherwise. It really is now or never and the least thing we want to see is the end of our dream," Smith said. Smith started Driftwood as a small group, made up of students and volunteers, taking Shakespeare in pay- what-you-can perfor- mances to communities in Durham. The company slowly grew and expanded beyond Durham. What some people may not realize is it is now a pro- fessional, summer theatre group, employing emerging artists and technicians, which "increases our ex- penses but also contributes immeasurably to the quali- ty of work we produce," Smith said. In fact, artists who've worked with Driftwood have gone on to successful careers with Soulpepper Theatre, Tarragon The- atre, regional theatres across Ontario and both the Shaw and Stratford Festivals. "Perhaps to our own detriment, we have not ac- tively engaged in educating the public about the very real cost of producing pro- fessional, touring theatre. We certainly need them to be aware of, and willing to support, the cost of it now," Smith said. Driftwood receives assis- tance from the Trillium Foundation, the Laidlaw Foundation, Ontario Power Generation and other part- ners throughout the province. By Jim Easson Special to the News Advertiser AJAX — Two Annandale men's teams won the Ontario finals of the doublerink Silver Tankard at their home club Sunday. Their championships came at the expense of the pair of teams from Dundas Granite. The games were all close. One team consisted of War- ren Leslie, Alex Bianchi, Jason March and Blair Metrakos. The other was Gord Norton with Dave Hutchison, Marvin Harri- son, and Ron Alexander. The Women's Tankard saw Ilderton Curling Club win over Galt Curling Club. The Annandale teams won the regional playdown at the Uxbridge Curling Club on Sat- urday. ••• Annandale's Tim March ju- nior-bantam curling team emerged with a silver medal in a close championship game at the 2004 Optimist International Under-18 Curling Champi- onships, held in B.C. between April 1 and 4. In the gold-medal final, the game was tied 5-5 going into the f inal end, but Brennan Jones of Saskatchewan stole the victory. The March rink, with Matt Pyne, Patrick Janssen and Tyler Anderson, placed second in the round-robin draw by virtue of a tie-breaking draw to the button. Paul Bourque coached the team. ••• Pickering resident and for- mer Olympian Richard Hart participated in the World Curl- ing Tour PharmAssist Players' Championship in St. John's, Newfoundland last week. He is on the Glenn Howard team with Collin Mitchell and Jason Mitchell. The team had a successful season, winning $68,375, but was shut out of winning any more cash in this event, which featured 18 of the top Canadian men's teams. Petites just miss out on shot at provincial gold PICKERING —After a gruelling weekend of ringette, a bronze medal was more than enough for the Pickering petite 'A' team at the Provincial Ringette Champi- onships in Richmond Hill from March 25 to 28. The local petites, which earned the right to compete at the cham- pionships as a wild-card entry, played Whitby for the right to move on to the gold-medal con- test, with the loser settling for bronze. Despite a strong effort, Pickering fell to Whitby. No score was reported. The petites began tournament action last Thursday with victo- ries over West Ottawa and Valley East (Sudbury). No scores were reported. After a team dinner, the girls participated in the opening ceremonies, at which time the 28 teams playing in four divisions were recognized for their achieve- ment of qualifying for the cham- pionships. Pickering continued its win- ning ways Friday, with wins over Richmond Hill and Jordan. On Saturday, Pickering played Guelph, which was also undefeat- ed after four games. The score was tied 3-3 after regulation play and it was on to sudden-death overtime. The teams traded chances until Guelph scored the winning marker. Playing its final round-robin contest against Durham rival Whitby, Pickering dropped the important contest. No score was reported. It meant Pickering played an additional sudden- death game against West Ottawa in order to advance to the medal round. With only a two-hour rest, Pick- ering and West Ottawa faced off, with West Ottawa opening the scoring. Pickering tied it at 1-1 late in regulation play, sending the game into sudden death over- time where captain Sarah Thompson scored to advance into medal contention. Other team members are Alana Raymond, Leah Abel, Maddie Southwell, Shelaney Lloyd, Kim Carlton, Patricia Tillaart, Michelle Stinson, Kelsey Fran, Leigha Johnston, Laura Brighton, Cassidy Holt and Stacey Forbes. Dana Lee, John Brighton and Bob Bickerton coach the team.
