A big request from the heart Patient group wants full cardiac services for Rouge Valley By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING – A group of community volunteers are putting their hearts into a campaign to get bypass surgery at Rouge Valley Health System’s Centenary site. The Cardiac Care Commu- nity Advisory Group is made up of ex-cardiac patients who formed together in 1998 to advocate for full cardiac ser- vices at Centenary. “At that time if you needed surgical - angioplasty and by- pass - you were transported downtown to have that hap- pen, which caused a very up- setting time for the patient and the family,” said Phil Di- amond, chairman of the group. Mr. Diamond, a Whitby resident, had a triple bypass four years ago and travelled to St. Mike’s in downtown To ronto. He was in hospital for a month with his family having to commute from Durham to visit - something he and the group are trying to prevent for future pa- tients. Since the advisory group formed, angioplasty has been added to Centenary and now it only needs one more car- diac service. “We need the bypass to fin- ish off the full spectrum,” he said. The advisory group is lob- bying the Province to have the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care name Rouge Valley Centenary as an advanced cardiac surgery centre with a start-up in 2007-2008. “The fact is we have noth- ing from Kingston to down- town Toronto,” said Bud Wilkes, a member of the group and a Scarborough resident. The 14 members in the ad- visory group come from Scar- borough, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and one from Os- hawa. They are lobbying on be- half of the 1.1 million resi- dents of east Scarborough and Durham. “This is the best group to be talking about this. All we want is the cardiac surgery to be brought into Rouge Val- ley,” Mr. Wilkes said. He also had to travel to St. A.J. The Durham District School Board’s health and safety officer says the tests in- volved blowing compressed air into the carpets at the Westcreek Public School building and capturing it for analysis. “The spores that we were finding in the carpet, if we had blown compressed air in the dirt, we would have had the same thing,” he says. “All we found with the second set of samples was dirt in the mats, and as part of the dirt, among other things, you’ll find mould spores.” Commonly found in soil, he says the mould species was not picked up in the initial test of air outside of the portable. However, it was found inside, leading to the belief that something inside the portable was the origin. Some parents had raised Costs ‘through the roof’ Pickering wants $3,200 for council expense details By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING –If you want to know what Pickering council- lors personally spent your tax dollars on in 2003, it will cost you $3,200. That’s based upon a written estimate to the News Adver- tiser, which asked for specific details of councillor expense accounts and was told to fill out a Freedom of Information Act (FOI) request. Total 2003 expenses were sought for each councillor and the mayor, along with receipts, invoices and any other documentation that would detail each ex- pense. Paul White, president of the Fairport Beach Neighbour- hood Association, said, “I’d go through the roof” if he wanted the information and was told it would cost more than $3,000. “They shouldn’t have any- thing that shouldn’t be able to be scrutinized by the public and that the public wouldn’t find reasonable,” he said. The written estimate fig- ured the request would take 10 7 hours, which, using the $30 an hour fee set out in the Free- dom of Information Act, comes to $3,210. ✦See Mayor page A2 ✦See Very page A2✦See School page A2 “That was an estimate, and we at this point in time can only estimate, and until we embark on the exercise (then) we refine that,” said Anne Greentree, the City’s FOI co-ordina- tor. She said Monday the City doesn’t know exactly how big the search would be. “We don’t know how many transac- tions that is, we don’t know how many boxes we have to go through,” she said in trying to explain why the City has estimated 107 hours. “We would definitely refund anything if [the esti- mate] was out of whack in any way, shape or form.” In January, the newspaper request- ed the same information from the Town of Ajax. It was provided at no cost within weeks and without an FOI. Rob Ford, Ajax’s manager of fi- nance, estimated it took eight to 10 hours “to scour files and photocopy (the information).” Ajax and Picker- ing have the same number of elected representatives - six councillors and a mayor. When told this, Ms. Greentree replied, “I can’t speak to Ajax.” Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan said finding the information is not a nor- mal part of staff duties, so if the City didn’t charge for the service it would have to be paid for by the taxpayers. “When you want all of the backup information, that requires staff time and that costs the municipality - the taxpayer - money and that’s why there is a fee for that service,” he said. “To go back and dig that informa- tion out is a workload and what we do is determine how much time that is going to take.” When asked about the Ajax situa- tion, he said he would make some in- quiries. “I have no difficulty with you having the information,” Mayor Ryan added. “And we’ll get it to you as soon as pos- sible.” Individuals making an FOI request do have a method of recourse if an es- timate seems too high. Dave Douglas, FOI and privacy co- ordinator with the Information and Privacy Office of Ontario, said indi- viduals can ask for a waiver of fees or they can appeal the estimate. “(If someone asks for the fee to be waived) they’re going to have to demonstrate to the institution that there is going to be financial hardship (to pay the request),” Mr. Douglas said. “The only other thing they can do is appeal the fee if they think the institution hasn’t calculated it fairly.” Mr. Douglas’s role is to provide ad- vice to institutions and individuals with questions about the Freedom of Information Act. concerns about the portable, prompting principal Kevin Lowe to keep students out of the structure for two days earlier this month March. They said students should not have been allowed inside the portable again until the followup test con- firmed it was a safe environment. Mr. Gibson says the results show why airborne fungal sampling alone cannot be used to determine if there’s mould or a health risk, but must be backed up with a visual in- spection. On the other hand, the vi- sual inspection did not reveal that a carpet at the front of the classroom held the spores as well. “It was clean on top, it was clean underneath,” says Mr. Gibson, adding the portable is safe for stu- dents. “There was no odours, there was no stains.” Tested after the damp walk-off mat had been removed, it too, contained mould spores and has been taken out of the building. As well, an area near the portable door where moisture could get in was repaired, and a new exhaust fan was installed to address high carbon dioxide levels. Parent Lynn Barnes, whose son was a student in the portable and has nasal polyps, remains unhappy with how the matter was handled. “I’m not satisfied in terms of the re- sponse we’ve gotten from the school board,” she says. Ms. Barnes said she first raised concerns in early January, but it took about a month for officials to con- duct tests. She also has a number of questions that she says have not been answered. “Do I believe now that they have it cleaned up - yes,” she says. “But that’s one portable; did they test the rest of the portables there?” Jacques Perreault, an environmen- tal health manager at the Durham Region health department, says that remains an option. “If somebody had a concern about any of the other portables, they could certainly go through the process,” he says, adding it would begin by in- forming the school principal. Mr. Perreault says “it wouldn’t be the first time that carpets were im- plicated in mould growth,” but he be- lieves the issue has been resolved. In his opinion, Durham’s school portables, which he says are inspect- ed regularly, “are very sound right now.” P PAGE A2 NEWS ADVERTISER,WEDNESDAY EDITION, March 31, 2004 www.durhamregion.com PHONE ORDERS ACCEPTED HOURS Mon. - Wed. 10-6 Thurs. - Fri. 10-9 Sat. 10-6 Sun. 11-4 TWIN FULL QUEEN KING TWIN FULL QUEEN KING WITH ANY MATTRESS SET PURCHASED • Bed Frame • NO PST • Mattress Pad • Bed Rails • NO GST • Comforter • Layaway • Pillow • Set-up • Disposal or old set • Percale Set of Sheets • Local Delivery 4 FREE CHOICES Any COUPON ORTHOPEDIC 20 YR WARRANTY Single Double Queen King $ 239 $ 289 $ 349 $ 539 Set Set Set Set $ 389 $ 459 $ 549 $ 849 Single Double Queen King $ 179 $ 219 $ 279 $ 469 Set Set Set Set $ 319 $ 389 $ 479 $ 759 COMFORT SLEEP 15 YR WARRANTY Single Double Queen King $ 379 $ 489 $ 579 $ 709 Set Set Set Set $ 569 $ 699 $ 829 $ 1089 P O C K E T C O I L P I L L O W T O P P O C K E T C O I L P I L L O W T O P POCKET COIL PILLOW TOP 2 5 Y R W A R R A N T Y 2 5 Y R W A R R A N T Y 25 YR WARRANTY Electric Bed Ambassador Bed ON SALE ON SALE ON SALE $ 189 $ 189 $ 189 Bedroom Suite Iron Futon Sofa Complete Harvard Bunk Bed - Complete $ 1264 $ 1264 $ 1264 FINANCING ACCEPTED rrs TM B UY F ACTORY D IRECT A ND S AVE !!! The fifth year of high school disap- peared last year with the graduation of a ‘double cohort’ of Grade 12 and OAC students. However, while no Grade 13 should mean fewer stu- dents, about 1,800 Durham Grade 12s returned this year for a fifth year to improve their marks or obtain needed credits. Most students returned for just one semester. The question school officials must answer is, was that a one-year phe- nomenon or will the same thing occur this coming school year? “Having had one year’s experience in the four-year program, we don’t re- ally have any set pattern to work with,” says Ed Hodgins, business su- perintendent at the Durham District School Board. “There are no norms in our new world. That is an added com- plication.” School boards set their budgets in June, estimating their student popu- lation for the coming year. A miscal- culation can be costly, as occurred three years ago, when the Durham Catholic District School Board swal- lowed a $1-million deficit. It hired staff based on an enrolment projection, but ended up with about 400 fewer students, resulting in less money from the government. Education watchdog, People for Education, last week claimed Ontario secondary schools would be out more than $250 million next school year if the Province doesn’t change its edu- cation funding formula to compen- sate for declining high school enrol- ment. However, Mr. Hodgins says there are some savings with fewer students, since fewer teachers are required, for example. Still, student numbers do not affect capital and other fixed costs, he adds. Durham’s high school population was 29,651 students at the start of the school year, but has fallen to 28,279, according to officials at the Durham Catholic and public school boards. Gerry O’Neill, controller of plan- ning at the Catholic board, says there are 281 fewer students in board schools compared to the start of the year. But over the next few years the board expects increases in high school student numbers. “Next year it’ll start to pick up,” he says. “We’ll see an increase in the sec- ondary panel.” Mr. Hodgins says the Province’s de- clining enrolment adjustment for school boards covers 50 per cent of the cost of a lost student in the first year, and 25 per cent in the second year. He notes the Ministry of Educa- tion might extend funding to a third year, and if it did would likely offer 12.5 per cent. The ministry’s foundation grant provides boards with $4,681 for each secondary student. The other day I called up my current Internet provider to let them know I was switching to an- other ISP. The guy on the phone went into immediate Pander Alert. Suddenly, after deafening si- lence for the past six months, this company couldn't do enough for me. They had new plans I probably hadn't heard about. (Dumb me, why hadn't I been calling in on a weekly basis to find out about the deals I was missing out on?) They had new bundles. They could even talk about reducing my price a little. Sorry guys, too little too late. I told him he wasn't even close to the other offer I'd received, an offer that was made proactively by a smart company looking for my business. At this point the sales guy be- gins to sound like a hurt lover. He wants to know why? Why am I leaving? What happened? So I tell him, in graphic detail, why I'm leaving: Poor service and bru- tal prices. Bundle that, pal. He's trying to keep cool, but I can hear the panic in his voice. "Who is it?" he demands. So I tell him that, too. I say it loud and proud, and I can tell by the whispered expletive on the other end of the phone that the name is like garlic to a vampire. Apparently, this is not the first such call he has fielded recently. He's losing me now and he knows it, so he goes for the throat. Like a desperate, jilted couch potato whose spouse has dumped him for a younger, sexier plaything, he begins to malign my new relationship. "Oh them," he spits. "They don't have a very big network." "It's not the size of the net- work," I shout tearfully, "it's how you use it buddy!" Suddenly, I realize I have fallen into the same tawdry metaphor this sales guy has been using. Un- able to help myself, I begin to rant. Months of pent-up anger and frustration burst from in- side. "These people talk to me. They care about me. I'm special, Mis- ter." He tries to say something, but I'm on a roll. "Where were you when I could- n't connect, huh? Do you know what it does to a person's self-re- spect to have to hit redial again and again and again? And did you really think I wouldn't notice when you kept hooking me up at 28.8 instead of the 56.6 you and your special friends were doing it at?" I go on for a few more an- guished minutes before finally stopping, breathless. There is an embarrassed silence before the sales guy manages a small, beat- en-up "Sorry." I have taken my pound of flesh, but feel only wretched. "Look," I stammer after a mo- ment or two, "this didn't have to end this way. If you'd have only called now and then, just to see how I was doing, ask if I needed anything? Maybe we'd still be to- gether." He starts to talk but I can hear the "click‚" of his call-waiting and I hang up. He's already found somebody else. Editorial Editorials &Opinions WEDNESDAY, MARCH 31, 2004 ✦ News Advertiser ✦ DAVID STELL, NEWS EDITOR, 905-683-5110 EXT. 249 Letters to the Editor Pickering has to open up about expenses City’s high price tag only leads to questions about political conduct Imagine handing over thousands of dollars and blindly trusting it will be put to only the best use. That, in a nutshell, is what the City of Pickering is asking residents to do with their tax dollars. Unless, of course, you're willing to pay up - big. When The News Advertiser requested that the City supply specific details about what Pickering council members claimed expenses for in 2003, the answer was a referral to the City's freedom of information (FOI) co-ordinator, Anne Greentree. She put the price tag for releasing the public infor- mation at $3,210, plus 20 cents per page for the photo- copying of documents. The justification? That's what Ms. Greentree esti- mates it will cost in staff time to pull the information and ensure nothing sensitive is released. Her esti- mates are based on the $30 an hour allowed for under the provincial Freedom of Information Act, or 107 hours. Paul White, of the Fairport Beach Neighbourhood Association, put it best when he noted he'd "go through the roof" if delivered a similar bill. Now here's the real kicker: all that same information was provided by the Town of Ajax at no charge, with no questions or delays, no FOI, and within a month of asking. Staff there needed eight to 10 hours to "scour f iles and photocopy" the claims. The City is clearly throwing up obstacles their simi- larly sized neighbours to the east did not. Surely there can't be anything to hide? After all, a public accounting of exactly how tax dol- lars are being expensed is desperately needed. Consider that the entire council expense bills in Ajax for 2003 added up to about $17,000, while in Pickering (2003 totals still haven't been released) former mayor Wayne Arthurs racked up more than $25,000 himself in 2002 and regional councillors Mark Holland, Maurice Brenner and Rick Johnson all came in at more than $11,000. Even locally, Ward 2 Councillor Bill McLean, at more than $12,000, was higher than councillors Bren- ner and Johnson, while David Pickles claimed more than $9,000 and Mayor Dave Ryan, then the Ward 1 city councillor, claimed about $6,500. To further compare, across the region only Marcel Brunelle topped the claims of the Pickering council- lors. Even then, the Whitby mayor's $14,744 only slight- ly beat Coun. Holland's more than $13,000 in municipal claims (don't forget there are regional expenses too). As for the rest of the municipalities, few councillors or mayors recorded more than $3,000. Pickering residents have every right to know where exactly every last one of their tax dollars was spent, without being forced to take out a second mortgage. In fact, they shouldn't have to pay a dime to ensure coun- cil members are being responsible. At a time when news is dominated by the federal funding scandal and politicians are routinely called to task over their pay and perks, Pickering's stiff stance can only further erode the public's confidence. It can only conjure up images of elected officials feeding greedily at the trough. Pickering council has to come clean and order staff to immediately release the requested information at no cost. If they can't be accountable to the taxpayers, the very people who voted them to office, then who? To balk at the release would only add fuel to the specula- tion that there is something big to hide. It would smack of diversion and stall tactics when clearly there is some explaining to do. We need political salaries picture cleared up To the editor: Re: ‘Political payout,’ March 5. Can somebody please give us the straight goods. Mingling councillors’ severance maxi- mums with annual salary for the town and regional salaries obfuscates the facts. Severance is a one-time pay- ment with a formula applied to each case that takes into ac- count the number of years of service in calculating the pay- ment. It can be an amount from zero up to the maximum. I’m comfortable with funding a pro- gram that provides a fair finan- cial bridge for departing coun- cillors while they find new em- ployment. What the public needs to know is what’s the total com- pensation for a councillor and mayor each year, and how does this compare across towns and regions? Regardless of the dif- fering responsibilities, it all comes out of our pocket. My guess is an apples-to-ap- ples comparison would need to include, Town salary; Town pay for committee appointments (use averages for committees per person and pay per commit- tee); Town non-reportable ex- pense allowance; Town taxable benefits; Region salary; Region pay for committee appoint- ments (use averages for com- mittees per person and pay per committee); Region non-re- portable expense allowance; and Region taxable benefits. When this lot’s added up, it might reveal why the regional chairman wants a mega raise. But, if salary comparison be- tween them is fair, then the in- cumbent’s employment con- tract should be on the same terms. That is, the electorate who pick up the tab, make the hiring decision too. Keith Sarre Ajax Developers give us little choice To the editor: Re: ‘Where once there were fields,’ March 24. The Ontario Home Builder’s Association says “it’s easy to blame developers and builders for the type of houses” and asks “who buys them?” If the only choices are low- and medium- density housing, people can only buy what they build. In Europe, they renew and build compact, and it’s our spread-out sprawl that costs us our environment and money to service it. Developers also earn more profit in low-density devel- opments. It’s local planning and coun- cils that decide and approve these decisions, so, if a subdivi- sion is built on sensitive or prime farmland, the public has little influence. The new provin- cial government, and our Durham planning department have some great suggestions for strengthening the ability to pro- tect these lands, but it’s still local councils that have to come up to speed with sustainable planning. An example of the Region doing a pretty good job is that regional council and planning have remained firm in their commitment to Pickering’s agri- cultural preserve, and that it should remain as protected farmland. Even the Province has committed to preserving the entire area and two-thirds of Seaton. So, I don’t understand the logic of the City’s support of a growth management study that recommends low- and medium-density housing and developing them both. I do blame developers be- cause even though the preserve has permanent agricultural easements to keep the land for future generations, developers have gone in and pushed to de- velop it anyway. We need development, we need growth, but, it’s about re- spect for community, environ- ment, the next generation - what should be developed and what should not. Mr. Wilkes said when you’re going through something like that it’s not nice to be separated from your fami- ly and so far away from your home. “It’s a pretty traumatic thing to go through,” said his wife Barb. She would have liked him treated closer to home. Mr. Wilkes spoke at Pickering’s ex- ecutive committee (made up of members of council) meeting Mon- day night to ask for the City’s back- ing. The committee endorsed a mo- tion supporting the advisory group. Mr. Diamond spoke Monday night at Whitby council, which held off on a decision and asked for a written re- quest. He made a presentation to Ajax council last month and it supported the initiative. Fears loss of services at Ajax and Pickering site could lead facility down dangerous road By David Blumenfeld Staff Writer DURHAM – Councillor Pat Perkins fears “the beginning of the end” has come for a full service hospital in Ajax and Pickering. A move by directors to consoli- date services at the two-site Rouge Valley Health System - the other site is Scarborough Centenary - has the regional councillor alarmed for the future of the Durham site. “You’re opening yourself wide open for these things to just perpet- uate into the demise of this hospi- tal,” she warned board members who made a presentation to council last week. “It’s what we have seen happen in the Whitby hospital. (Lakeridge Health) eroded it over time, took one after another of its services and put it into a more high traffic, or high-warranted area. I honestly think if this is the way these ser- vices are going to go... if that hap- pens, then you’re flying straight in the face of what the Health Services Restructuring Commission has mandated you to do.” When the HSRC created the Rouge Valley Health System in 1998, the agreement stated Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital would not only maintain its service levels from the previous year, but enhance them as well, said Coun. Perkins. “They have not mandated that you consolidate those services. If this is how this is going, you are cre- ating your own demise. You are de- teriorating what you could be... pro- viding to the residents of this re- gion.” However Gerry Blake, vice-chair- man of Rouge Valley’s board of di- rectors, said the board is “100-per cent committed” to maintaining ex- cellent health care services in Ajax and Pickering, and to expand as the community grows. Due to doctor and specialist shortages in the region, he said the board has considered consolidating specialized services, or “services with smaller volumes,” to Scarbor- ough or Ajax. These would include thoracic, vascular and orthopedic surgery, inpatient rehabilitation, elective endoscopy, plastic surgery, brochoscopy and ophthalmology. “We have to find new ways of pro- viding services, new ways to work smarter and to continue to offer safe, quality care. The future also involves choosing what services must be delivered in partnership with others, because a hospital, like any business, cannot be all things to all people and still be effective,” Mr. Blake said. He said there is a great deal of miscommunication in the commu- nity regarding the future of Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering, and wel- comed the opportunity to “set the record straight.” He began his pre- sentation by maintaining the hospi- tal will remain open. “There are no plans to close the hospital, nor are there plans to turn it into a walk-in clinic. There never were. The emergency department there already services 42,000 pa- tients a year, with more on the way. Where would they go without Ajax and Pickering?” he asked. “Our commitment to Rouge Val- ley Ajax and Pickering is absolute. Since the merger in 1998, millions and millions of dollars of new equip- ment and new operating money has been pumped into this hospital, and many new services have been added to the roster,” he said, such as a new Nuclear Medicine Clinic, new X-ray equipment, a CT scan- ner, a Cardiac Diagnostic Unit, a new cystoscopy suite and a renovat- ed emergency department. He also said, unlike many other hospitals, Rouge Valley finished last year with a balanced budget, and has plans to do so again this year. He also made reference to an addi- tional $47-million from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care that will help expand services at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering. Yvonne Bosch, a longtime Ajax resident also at Monday’s meeting, presented council with a petition with more than 7,000 signatures calling for the return of a full-ser- vice hospital at Ajax and Pickering. She plans to deliver it to Queen’s Park in April. Dr. Carmen Price, chief of staff at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering prior to amalgamation, told council hospital beds at the site have de- creased from 59 to 45. He said that if services merge, patients would be forced to travel an extra 25 kilome- tres. Whitby Mayor Marcel Brunelle told Mr. Blake the “fair amount of cynicism” he heard from council did not come from irrational fear. “It comes from those of us who have lived through it. What you’re hearing from this community and this council, is that they are afraid to lose something that is extraordi- narily valuable,” he said. Councillor Gerry Emm said the Town was hurt and “hurt bad” when it lost its full-service hospital. “We’re still feeling the hurt,” he said. The Canadian Diabetes Associa- tion is closing branch offices across the GTA, including the Durham office in Oshawa, at the beginning of April. One large office will provide ser- vices for diabetics, as well as offer more education and fund-raising, says Jean Foster, manager of public programs and services for the Greater Toronto Area. The regional offices in Durham, Yo rk and Peel, along with a combined To ronto and national office down- town are being amalgamated into one site in the Hwy. 404 and Sheppard Av- enue area, she says. “It’s a really posi- tive move for us.” But, the move isn’t welcomed by everyone. “I’m not sure how this is going to help,” says Barbara Lorne, who runs a diabetic support group in Pickering, questions the move. She established the group with funding from the Pickering Lions Club. It attracts at least 30 diabetics each month and “will continue to meet as long as the Pickering Lions Club funds us.” Ms. Foster explains there are bene- fits though. There is one person in each region- al office now to “service the entire area, fund development and do edu- cation. It’s a huge task,” Ms. Foster notes. “We’re bringing in a full team and this team will look after the Greater Toronto Area.” At each branch, “there was a co-or- dinator who had multiple tasks,” she says. “Their main focus will be servic- ing people with diabetes. They can work with people with diabetes and those at risk of diabetes.” Ms. Foster adds existing support groups will continue. “We want to increase the service we have already. We want to expand on that. That’s the reason for the move,” she states. “We feel we’re not doing enough of that and we want to do more. “Our mandate is to help people with diabetes and we want to do that. This is a start.” The association also plans to set up small information centres throughout the area. “We’ll establish partnerships with pharmacists,” she says, noting there aren’t any such partnerships in Durham yet. “We have six in York, 10 in Peel and 15 downtown (Toronto).” Pharmacies work on diabetes ad- vice and supply services and litera- ture. “We’ll do it in a convenient and ac- cessible location for people with dia- betes.” In addition, with incidents of child- hood obesity increasing, which raises the chances of diabetes, “we need to work with schools on activities and food choices,” Ms. Foster notes. “We’ll have a co-ordinator working in the community at least three full days.” She added they will be doing pre- sentations and providing education. Winger Veronica Da Silva, goalkeep- er Breanna Van Abbema and striker Amanda Morris were named to the Team Ontario under-14 girls' team. The three girls emerged on the provincial roster after several months of gruelling tryouts. The team also returned recently from 10 days of intensive training in Cocoa Beach, Florida over the March break. The under-14 provincial team is comprised of elite players from all over Ontario. The girls are now vying for a spot on the national championship squad set to compete in Saskatchewan at the end of July. Much intensive training and hard work lies ahead for these athletes. In addition to their Team Ontario responsi- bilities, the three girls also play on the Pickering Power Falcons under-14s, the city's entry in the Ontario Youth Soccer League. Generals Eager to stay alive in playoff series DURHAM — Ben Eager extended the Oshawa Generals' season by at least one more night by scoring 3:29 into dou- ble overtime Monday at the Civic Audito- rium. Eager blew past Mississauga de- fenceman Anthony Butera and beat goaltender David Shantz just inside the post to give the Generals a 3-2 win and force a seventh game in their OHL East- ern Conference semifinal against the IceDogs. Game 7 was last night (after our deadline) at the Hershey Centre in Missis- sauga. Dan Turple made 53 saves in goal for the Generals Mon- day, while Shantz made 44 stops for the IceDogs. Eager and captain Tobias Whelan each had a goal and an assist and Chris Hulit also for Oshawa. Hulit was injured late in the third period and didn't return. Dan Rudisuela forced overtime by scoring with 23 seconds left in regula- tion time for the IceDogs. With Shantz on the bench for an extra attacker, Rudisuela was left alone in front and lifted a backhand past Tur- ple. Tom Zanoski opened the scoring in the first period for the IceDogs. Hulit, in the second period, and Whelan, in the third, both beat Shantz on high shots to the glove side. Boyer trades in junior ‘A’ hockey club St. Mary girls play London school in quarter-finals today PICKERING —The St. Mary Sec- ondary School Monarchs girls' hock- ey team locked up a quarter-final berth with a perfect run in pool play at the provincial high school champi- onships in Toronto. The third-seeded Monarchs posted a 4-0 record in Pool 'C' at the 20-team Ontario Federation of School Athlet- ic Associations (OFSAA) 'AAA' Girls' Hockey Championships at York Uni- versity. The defending OFSAA champion St. Mary girls recorded their fourth victory Tuesday afternoon by blank- ing the sixth-seeded Markham Dis- trict High School Marauders 2-0. Jes- sica Judges and Nicole Ruta, with her sixth goal of the championships, scored for the Monarchs. Grade 9 goaltender Michelle Bradley record- ed the shutout. "Our second game (Tuesday against Markham) was phenomenal," says St. Mary coach Melanie Cayford. "The girls worked so well together as a team and it really showed. The en- ergy was great." The Monarchs played their quar- ter-final contest this morning (Wednesday) at the York University Ice Gardens against the second- place team in the 'D' pool -- the St. Thomas Aquinas Flames of London. Semifinal contests were also slated for this morning. The bronze-medal game went this afternoon at 2 p.m., followed by the gold-medal clash at 3:15 p.m. On Tuesday morning, St. Mary de- feated 11th-seeded Loyola of Missis- sauga 2-1 in a game between two teams sporting identical 2-0 records. Ruta and Lisa Henein scored. The Monarchs started their OFSAA title defence Monday after- noon with a 5-2 victory over 19th- seeded Birchmount from Scarbor- ough. Cristin Allen and Ruta led the way with two goals apiece, while Amanda Morra potted the other. Late Monday afternoon, the St. Mary girls recorded their second vic- tory of the tournament, 6-2 over 14th- seeded St. Joseph's from Cornwall. Ruta again led the way with a two- goal effort. Chloe Masse, Morra, Stephanie Walsh and Erin Small were the other goal scorers. Meanwhile, the other local entry at OFSAA -- the Dunbarton High School Spartans -- had yet to record a victory in its first three games in pool 'D'. The Spartans played out the string Tuesday afternoon against 12th- seeded Lambton Central of Petrolia, with the result unavailable at press time. On Tuesday morning, 20th-seeded Eastview of Barrie upended the 13th- seeded Spartans 4-1. Kelly Rapson scored the lone Dunbarton goal. The Spartans were beaten 4-2 by fifth-seeded Notre Dame of Burling- ton on Monday morning. Alanna Fettes and Stephanie Wilson scored. On Monday afternoon, fourth- seeded St. Thomas Aquinas of Lon- don trounced Dunbarton 10-2. Bri- anne Goodino and Laura Clayton scored. New ownership group committed to keeping team in Pickering By Al Rivett Sports Editor PICKERING —Local car dealer Michael Boyer is out of the junior hockey business. The owner of the Pickering Pan- thers OHA Ontario Provincial Junior 'A' Hockey League team for the past nine years has sold the tier II club to a four-man ownership group that also owns the Greater Toronto Hockey League's Toronto Red Wings. The sale was finalized earlier this month. Headed by longtime Ontario Hock- ey League coach and Markham resi- dent Rick Cornacchia, the ownership group also includes Toronto residents Paul Fenwick and Randy Hebscher and John Porco, also of Markham. Boyer says his decision to sell the 32-year-old franchise was a relatively easy one: His business interests left him little time for the club. "I just found I couldn't devote as much time to the team as I would have liked. And, if I couldn't devote time to it, it's time to move on," he ex- plained. "I've lost a bit of interest in it over the last year or so. "I've been thinking about it for the last year, but I wanted to make sure that the team was sold to a good hockey organization and that it be kept local." In fact, the sale was predicated on the new owners retaining the Pan- thers name and keeping it in the city - - an agreement that was registered with the league. "That was very key to me; those were the two things I wanted done," he says. Boyer is confident the Panthers are in good hands, and that the new own- ership group will bring a newfound energy to the team. "I think the Toronto Red Wings will take it to the next level," says Boyer. "It was very important as to who I sold the team to." Fe nwick, the new Panthers presi- dent, says he and his partners are "very excited" about owning the club. "We're looking to do some market- ing and bringing people into the arena. We're 100-per cent committed to the Pickering community. We're looking forward to bringing as many people to the facility as possible and putting a good product on the ice," says Fenwick, who's also president of the Toronto Red Wings. Cornacchia says the Red Wings ownership group has been pursuing an opportunity to purchase a Tier II team for the past several years. He and his partners were looking to ex- pand the Red Wings, allowing anoth- er avenue for the players to develop. "What we wanted to do is give the players in our organization the ability to move to tier II if they required or wanted it. It's an opportunity for them to stay within our organization throughout their careers," says Cor- nacchia, the Red Wings' vice-presi- dent of hockey operations. But, it was only through meetings with Boyer that the purchase talks proceeded to the point where they were eventually consummated. "Through the grapevine you find out certain teams are for sale and, after investigating and making calls, you find sometimes they say no, sometimes they say maybe and some- times they say yes. We asked Mike (Boyer) and his response was 'maybe', depending on the group. I gave him my background and we went from there." Cornacchia says he and the other owners never had issues with keeping the team in Pickering. In fact, improv- ing the team, which has floundered in the past several seasons, and devel- oping players is the key focus. "We have no agenda to move them... We're very loyal people and we're not coming in to clean house. We w ant the community to support us and get behind the team. We want to provide outstanding hockey in the community and be part of the com- munity for a long, long time," says Cornacchia. The Panthers are "a great organiza- tion with an outstanding tradition in tier II hockey," he continued. "We're looking to build on that." He also confirmed the ownership group isn't planning wholesale changes to the management and coaching of the team. John Winder will be back for his second term as head coach in 2004-05, with Frank Robinson moving from director of player personnel into the general manager's role. Bruce Jennings will continue to serve as assistant GM. As director of hockey operations, Cornacchia says he'll work closely with Winder and Robinson, but says they'll be "the people running the show." The immediate focus, says Cornac- chia, is to transform the Panthers from a young, sub-.500 squad into one that should finish in the top three in the South Conference next season. "That's our goal," he says. PANTHERS' POSTSCRIPT:Cornacchia is best known as the head coach of the Memorial Cup champion Oshawa Generals during the 1990 Ontario Hockey League season... The Pan- thers host their annual rookie camp at the Pickering Recreation Com- plex's O'Brien rink from April 21 to 24... Dave Duerden returns as an as- sistant coach next season, but Al Avery has stepped down from the same position... Porco's role will be in the marketing end of the operation. Randy Hebscher, says Cornacchia, is a "supporter", meaning he'll serve as a silent partner. Sports Briefs MARCH 31, 2004 MICHAEL BOYER ‘It’s time to move on.’ Monarchs making strong bid to retain provincial hockey title St. Mary stopped in OFSAA quarter-finals PICKERING —The St. Mary Sec- ondary School Monarchs senior boys' hockey team was upended in the quarter-finals by a lower seed at the provincial high school championship, which ended Saturday in London. The third-seeded Monarchs, who finished in second place in pool 'C' at the 20-team Ontario Federation of School Ath- letic Associ- ation (OFSAA) 'AAA' Cham- pionships in London, played the 13th-seeded Orangeville Bears, dropping a 2-1 decision to a red-hot Bears squad in the quarter-final tilt on Friday. The Bears opened the scoring in the second period and added to their total in the second frame, both goals off the stick of Jeff Ivey. The Mon- archs didn't respond until the 2:11 mark of the third, with Kyle Wetering scoring, assisted by Greg Riggs and Ryan Eickmeier. The Toronto St. Michael's Double Blue -- the top seed at the champi- onships -- captured the OFSAA gold medal with a 3-0 victory over another Tor onto team, the Leaside Lancers. The Monarchs advanced to the playoff round after finishing pool play with an unbeaten 2-0-2 record. In their final pool game, the Monarchs played to a 2-2 draw with the sixth- seeded St. Thomas Aquinas Flames of London. Riggs and Joe Assenza scored for St. Mary. St. Mary defeated the 19th-seeded St. Joseph's Jaguars (16-3-2 overall) of Barrie 4-1 in Game 3 of pool play. Eickmeier, Jason Krasnowski, Assen- za and Kyle Foster scored. In Game 2, the Monarchs played to a 1-1 draw with the St. Peter's Saints of Peterborough. Riggs scored, assist- ed by Wetering and Shawn Coultice. The Monarchs opened play with a 4-2 victory over the 14th-seeded John McCrae Bulldogs of Ottawa. Riggs led the way with a hat trick, with Wetering netting the other. AJAX --Scotiabank played a gem of a contest against Don- lands Jewellers as the bankers eked out a one-point 34-33 vic- tory in a closely contested match in Ajax Ladies' Basket- ball League action last Wednesday night. The teams traded taking the lead several times, ending the first half tied at 16-16. In the second, Scotiabank gener- ated an eight-point lead, but the advantage was short-lived as Donlands, led by Lana Ed- monstone (16 points), went on a run of its own to overtake the bankers near the end of the game. Both teams exhibit- ed tough defence in the final minutes. The bankers, led by Connie Joseph (15 points) and Engrid Carmichael Johnson (14 points), took the lead for the final time in the last 30 seconds to record the narrow victory. Select Food Products en- joyed a fine feast at East Side Mario's with all players scoring en route to a 50-35 win in the second game of the evening. Defensively, East Side Mario's was effective in limit- ing Julie Hughes, second in league scoring, and fast-break artist Colleen Wetering to a combined seven points. But, when Selects' Tiina Henkusens and Kerri Joli- coeur decided to help them- selves to 15 points and 14 points, respectively, East Side, missing key shooters, could do little to respond. Marjorie Bates led East Side Mario's scoring with 12 points. Pickering speed skaters turn in solid showing at short track meet PI CKERING —Two city speed skaters were the top performers out of nine skaters from the Markham Speed Skating Club compet- ing at the Celeblade short track competition last week- end. Robin Gallagher, 14, and Cameron Mitchell, eight, joined 225 competitors from across Ontario for the last event of the provincial racing season, hosted by the Clar- ington Speed Skating Club. Athletes were divided into 13 groups based on ability, and raced a heat and a final in three distances. Gallagher, in only her sec- ond race meet, skated to a silver medal for her overall performance in the Charlie Division. She won her 500- metre heat comfortably in a personal best time of 59.68 seconds, and then made a further significant improve- ment to win the final in 57.46. The Dunbarton High School student also won her 666m heat comfortably and placed second in the final in 1:21.06, another personal best. After qualifying for the pri- mary final in the 777m dis- tance, she fought a memo- rable and closely-contested final at the front of the race, before slipping to fourth near the end with a time of 1:33.18. Mitchell competed against considerably older skaters in the Echo Division and fin- ished seventh overall. Having come tantalizingly close to the provincial record time for the 500m for his peewee age class at a meet in Kingston in mid- February, he did even better at Clarington. He beat the Ontario record by 0.27 seconds in a time of 1:06.64. He will have to be content with just knowing he beat the record, however, as only times in age class competi- tions can stand as records, so times at the Clarington meet do not qualify. He raced equally hard and fast in his other distances, achieving 1:33.75 for 666m and 1:47.39 for 777m, but a comparison with records cannot be made, as these distances are not raced by peewees at age class events. The triathlon program is geared to- ward the first-timers who are looking to complete their first 'tri-A-tri' or sprint distance triathlon, which com- bines all three disciplines of the triathlon (running, swimming, bik- ing) with distances that are not too intimidating. Participants learn about training methods and techniques, equipment, nutrition, injury prevention, transi- tions and, best of all, get support from people who have the same goal. The triathlon training program starts Tuesday, April 6 and runs once a week for 12 weeks at the Pickering Recreation Complex, 1867 Valley Farm Rd. Blues Underdog, featuring mem- bers from Ajax and Pickering and even one member from Port Hope, is the opening act for 2004 Grammy nominee Black Eyed Peas, on its western Canadian tour. To help cover costs for the trip, the seven-person musical act is holding a fund-raising concert at Bob Caygeon's, 1790 Liver- pool Rd. in Pickering, on Saturday, April 10. Band manager Chris McKee, of Pickering himself, said going on the road is no easy task. "Touring a seven-piece band is not cheap," he explained. "There's an $8,000 cost for the tour, including van rentals, gas, and hotel rooms." The tour's first stop, which is the band's first outside Ontario, is in Vancouver, April 22. The group opens two dates there before moving to Cal- gary April 24 and then Edmonton April 25. McKee mentioned the group will also be featured on television and will continue the tour without the Black Eyed Peas beyond April 26. The band plays a blend of hip-hop, alternative rock, and funk. McKee feels Underdog's sound mixes nicely with the main act's. Underdog's members are Viste Patricio, vocals/keyboards, Jeff Roberts, drums, Jeff Ledger, g uitar/bass, Darren Farmer, DJ, Najja Calibur, lead vocals, Candice Phillips, vocals, Brian Bracken, gui- tar/bass/vocals. Tickets to the Bob Caygeon's show are $5. Doors open at 10 p.m., with Blues Underdog hitting the stage at approximately 11:30 p.m. For more in- formation about the band, visit its Web Site at www.bluesunderdog. com. Brian Bracken is not pictured. Three artists currently featured around Ajax and Pickering Jeff Hayward Special to the News Advertiser DURHAM –Now is a great time for art lovers to go out and experience the work of local artists. The creations of three individuals, all members of the PineRidge Arts Council, are on display at three differ- ent locations in Durham. Amongst them are Mary Louise Howell of Uxbridge, Robert Hinves of Picker- ing, and Bernie Bainbridge of Whitby. All three offer a different perspective in their paintings, however all have experience working in the same medium, namely watercolour. Howell is self-taught, and has been working in watercolours for 14 years. She draws inspirations from her rural environment, and also has a love for portraying classic automobiles. She is expanding her horizons with recent experimentation in oil paint. "It's a lot more forgiving than wa- tercolour," she explained. "It (also) al- lows me to be more creative." Her work will be on display until April 10 at the Pickering Civic Com- plex, at 1 The Esplanade. Viewing times are Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Bainbridge has 18 pieces in her show at the Ontario Power Genera- tion information centre in Pickering, 1675 Montgomery Park Rd., until May 10. Bainbridge is also a veteran in the art field, creating her paintings for 13 years. Her work is influenced by the architecture and scenery in exotic places. Her pieces are owned interna- tionally, as part of private collections in New York and Greece. Her current showcase can be seen Monday to Fri- day, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Hinves said he has been involved in his art for a total of about 11 years. Unlike Howell, Hinves has gone from working in oils to later adopting wa- tercolour as his primary medium. He said that some of his main sub- jects are landscapes and historical buildings. Hinves' work will be on dis- play at the McLean Community Cen- tre, 95 Magill Dr. in Ajax, until April 19. Hours for viewing are Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. and on the weekend from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. All three displays are free to the public. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER,WEDNESDAY EDITION, March 31, 2004 PAGE B5 A/P www.magwyerspub.com RODNEY’S OYSTER BAR Thursday, April 8th @ 6pm PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE HWY 401 DUNDAS STREET THICKSON ROAD*Pictures not exactly as illustrated. The work will feature choir, soloists and an orchestra at St. George's Anglican Church, Bagot and Centre streets. The 60-voice choir, under the direction of Robert Phillips, will perform 'Requiem' for the first time in several years. Or- chestra players and soloists have been selected from Durham Region and other parts of the GTA. The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. both nights. Tickets are $15, $12 for students and are available at Information United Way at the Oshawa Centre and at the door on concert night. Requiem reprised by Philharmonic Arts centre ready to showcase the local talent DURHAM –The Durham West Arts Centre (DWAC) has final- ly found a place to call home. An open house is scheduled for this week to show off the new Ajax facility and the op- portunities the DWAC can offer the arts community. The new space will be used to showcase area talent in all the arts, from song and dance, to photography and multi- media. "The recently renovated building, built in the late 1800s, offers more than we dreamed of," said Angie Littlefield a member of the DWAC in a re- lease announcing the event. "There is space for a small gallery, offices for both DWAC and PRAC (PineRidge Art Council) and a board room which will be available for arts groups to hold meetings." There will also be an an- nouncement about details of the grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, to be used for the venture. "With this pilot project, we have a two-year window to demonstrate the power of the arts in Durham West," said Lit- tlefield. "It's an exciting time for the arts community and it's a challenge - a challenge we can meet. We hope to have set in motion the steps leading to a permanent arts centre by 2006." The arts community has many plans and now has the opportunity to thoroughly ex- plore these ideas, as well as ex- plore the ideas of a new execu- tive director, who will also be announced at the open house, Littlefield added. The open house is April 2, from 9 to 10 a.m., beginning with a few announcements, fol- lowed by a tour of the gallery and ending with refreshments. The DWAC is at 72B Old Kingston Rd. in Pickering Vil- lage. The event is open to the public, however space is limit- ed and advance response can be sent to event co-ordinator John Sabean at 905-831-3811. For more information, call Littlefield at 416-282-0646. Paul Lima, a successful freelancer, will talk about his experiences and give advice at the writers' and editors' breakfast dialogue at 8:30 a.m. at the Sports Garden Café in the Iroquois Park Sports Centre, Victoria and Henry streets in Whitby. His talk will touch on how success- ful freelance writers put food on the table by writing for a variety of publi- cations and clients and how they find new clients. He has worked as a pro- fessional writer, communicator and instructor for over 25 years and run a freelance writing, corporate commu- nications and media training busi- ness since 1988. Lima has developed and taught report writing, advertis- ing copywriting, media relations, pub- lic relations, communications and customer service courses and work- shops for corporate and non-profit clients, community colleges and vari- ous writers' associations. The cost of the breakfast meeting is $15, $1 2 for WCDR members. To re- serve a spot, call 905-259-6520 by April 7 and leave a message, or e-mail breakfast@wcdr.org. The WCDR (www.wcdr.org) is a non-profit umbrella organization dedicated to encouraging and pro- moting the art and skill of writing, fostering literacy, and providing moral support to writers through ed- ucation and networking with the help of existing organizations.
