Pickering future is all green Planning continues for continent’s largest urban park By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING – The largest urban park in North America could soon be created in northern Pick- ering. Transport Canada is in the ini- tial stages of a draft greenspace master plan, which would see the northern part of its Pickering lands (on the Oak Ridges Moraine) and the western por- tion (in the Rouge Valley) main- tained as greenspace. Former transport minister David Collenette accepted the plan in November and Transport Canada officials recently com- pleted a series of briefings to mu- nicipalities involved with the Greenspace Stewardship Com- mittee, which includes Pickering. “The goal of the greenspace master plan is to establish a sus- tainable balance between the physical, social and ecological en- vironment that protects the countryside landscape,” said Katherine Tugmora. Ms. Tugmora made the presen- tation to Pickering councillors and senior staff at the March management forum meeting. She said the more than 3,000 hectares of greenspace gives Pickering bragging rights. It would be the largest urban park in North America, she added. “Even a park the size of the Bronte Creek Provincial Park (Oakville) is only a third of the size of this greenspace,” she said. Thirteen projects are required for the implementation of the plan, covering the areas of gover- nance and management, plan- ning integration and strategies, and detailed planning and de- sign. “It’s an unprecedented oppor- tunity to complete a continuous Tr ansit support lags Regional system would be costly to some, benefit others: report By Danielle Milley and David Blumenfeld Staff Writers DURHAM –A lack of support has slowed down the plan for a re- gional public transit system. Ajax Ward 4 Local Councillor Pat Brown said a lack of informa- tion is what prompted the Town’s position. “The fact they haven’t done a business case to review the impli- cations of previous amalgama- tions flies in the face of good business projects,” she said. “No- body would enter into a new business without a business plan. The Pickering advisory commit- tee on race relations and equity is showcasing a display in the lobby of the Pickering Recreation Complex today (Sunday) and in the lobby of the Pickering Civic Complex to- morrow, March 22. “Myself and the committee feel it’s important to recognize the event to show its importance to the city and its residents,” said Ward 3 City Councillor David Pickles, who is the chairman of the advisory committee. The committee held a larger event Feb. 14 to commemorate Her- itage Day celebrating Pickering’s heritage and cultural diversity, so Coun. Pickles said they didn’t want to hold another large event. “We didn’t want this day to go by without doing something,” he said. The committee wanted the com- munity to continue to be aware of the harmful effects of racism and discrimination. The display includes a history of the advisory committee, a descrip- tion of previous events, and infor- mation on the groups and organi- zations that sit on the committee and participate in the events. Pickering has expressed strong sup- port for the transfer of responsibility. Pickering Ward 1 Regional Council- lor Maurice Brenner said he under- stands the hesitation of the northern municipalities, which according to a report released by the Town of Whitby Monday, would see their rates for transit triple. “I do know they are concerned and I respect that,” Coun. Brenner said. “I am in full agreement that we have to slow this down and look at the busi- ness case and look at their concerns.” He has yet to see Whitby report. Prepared by Whitby’s public works department, the report says if the Re- gion takes over public transit opera- tions, all eight Durham municipalities will share in the cost, resulting in lower taxes for urban households, while those in rural areas and north- ern townships would increase. Also stated in the report, Durham’s existing transit costs are more than $16 .5 million. Households in Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge each currently pay $22, $27 and $26 per year for tran- sit, while taxpayers in Oshawa, Ajax- Pickering and Clarington respectively pay $119, $103 and $54. In Whitby, urban households pay $102 south of Taunton Road and households in non-serviced areas pay $29 per year. All figures are based on taxation of a property valued at $221,708. Should the Region, take over transit, existing costs would be applied on the region- al tax rate across all of Durham. To maintain the current $16.5-million sys- tem, $88 would be applied equally. natural open space system from Lake Ontario to the Oak Ridges Moraine,” Ms. Tugmora said. “It’s an unprece- dented opportunity to have a large park in an urban area.” The federal government owns more than 7,500 hectares of land in north Pickering. Almost half of that is part of the greenspace study, while the rest has been set aside for the proposed airport. The Greater Toronto Air- ports Authority is currently finishing a draft plan on the airport, which would have to be approved by the fed- eral government. Ms. Tugmora said once the airport planning process is complete the area can be looked at as a whole. “So you don’t have conflicts or if you do have conflicts you have the means to resolve them sensibly by integrat- ing the greenspace study and the air- port study,” she said. Councillors expressed concerns over the lack of involvement of resi- dents currently leasing properties on the land from the federal government. “To protect the community or to protect the integrity of the tenants there - is there a plan in place?” asked Wa rd 2 City Councillor Bill McLean. Patricia Short-Gallé, regional man- ager of Pickering lands, said tenants are welcome to voice concerns. The next stage of the plan is to provide op- portunities for discussions with the public. Wa rd 3 Regional Councillor Rick Johnson, who lives on the federal lands, said the area won’t be viable unless the community is involved. “I compliment you for the work you’ve done but unless you return the land to the heart of the community... Unless the farmers own their proper- ties, it is not going to be viable,” he said. Pickering Islamic Centre By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING – Pickering’s Islamic community is one step closer to a perma- nent home. Construction started late last month on the Pickering Islamic Centre on Brock Road North and the first phase should be completed by the fall. Once finished, the more than 19,000-square-foot facility will give the grow- ing Muslim community in Pickering, and all of Durham, a place to pray, learn, gather and hold events. “It’s a complete centre to take care of the Muslim community for education, daily prayer, weddings and funerals,” said Javed Salam, a trustee on the centre’s committee. Before the construction started an old house on the property was used for prayers, but the space had become increasingly cramped over the years. Now, Friday prayers take place at the Don Beer Arena with 200 to 300 peo- ple in attendance. For weddings and funerals, the nearest mosque is in Scarborough. “We are all excited,” Mr. Salam said. “We want to see this built as soon as possible.” While planning for the centre started in 1997, it took until this year to break ground because of the need to raise funds. The project is expected to cost $3.5 million and so far about $1 million has been committed through fund-raising dinners, do- nations at Friday prayers and mailings to the Mus- lim community. Iqbal Ibrahim, chair- man of the fund-raising committee, is hopeful that now that construction has started people will make sure it gets finished. “The idea is to give a place to the community to interact with one anoth- er,” Mr. Ibrahim said. He said the centre would serve about 2,000 families. Rana Ahan, president of the committee, noted the centre will help edu- cate the whole communi- ty about Islam. “We will interact with the mainstream so there will be more understand- ing,” he said. P PAGE 6 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, March 21, 2004 www.durhamregion.com Better to deal with the issue now Pickering should acknowledge its other apartment industry Pickering council members are nervous, but they shouldn’t be. Staying safe is a no-lose strategy. That certainly is true when it comes to a possible new bylaw to legalize and require the registration of all basement and in-law apartment units. A proposal from planning department staff right now, City councillors will consider the option next month at their execu- tive committee meeting. Should they endorse the idea, homeowners would have to register all 'accessory dwelling units,' and meet inspection and safety requirements. The move would also allow Pickering to better track just how many units there are in the city. While a number of councillors immediately raised red flags, at first glance, it's certainly an idea worth further study. Finding basement apartments within the city is as certain as finding roads, water and parks. It's a fact of life for all cities. Consider that in Toronto, 20 per cent of that city's rental hous- ing units are found within private homes. Certainly the units offer relief in the tight rental market we're faced with today. The trend toward legalization, however, has only begun to grow these past few years, with the cities of Toronto and Guelph among those with laws in place. Rather than a municipality going about its business, hoping it's not struck with the tragedy of a deadly fire in a unit it knows little about, bylaws go a long way toward ensuring these homes are meeting the necessary health, safety and fire code require- ments. True, it will cost homeowners to register, but that's no differ- ent than requiring development charges with new homes. The fee helps the City recover the cost of inspections and adminis- tration of the system. For those concerned legalization will only open the door to an influx of units, consider the great cost involved with adding a self-sustaining living area to a home. As important as a bylaw is in offering the City a tool to keep residents safe, it must have the teeth to back it up. It must come with stiff penalties for those who fail to register and com- ply. Pickering has much to gain in safety and security by regis- tering these secondary units. Maintaining a hear-no-evil, speak-no-evil approach can only spell trouble. There’s no room for basement apartments To the editor: As a person who resides in a so-called single-family dwelling neighbourhood, I would like to voice my objection to the proposed wholesale legalization of base- ment apartments. While some of these units may pre- sent their own safety issues, in the broader context, they create a safety hazard for any youngster playing in the street, due to the physical congestion created by so many additional vehicles parking at the curb. Inevitably in my opinion, such apart- ments will significantly lower the value of adjacent properties. Consequently, I am particularly upset at the cavalier attitude of City staffers in the planning department, who are proposing legislation to legalize such apartments, without first allowing councillors to consult with their local constituents. Councillor David Pickles is right to be concerned, but not for the reasons he espouses. Surely, it is the property own- ers in each neighbourhood who have the right to say whether or not a basement apartment adjacent to them is appro- priate. Having bought into a single-family subdivision, I am appalled at the lack of bylaw enforcement in our area. Proper- ty owners should not have to voice ob- jections to the illegal basement apart- ments, when our existing bylaws do not permit them. Perhaps it's time to consider suing the City for failing to enforce existing bylaws, for causing congestion on our streets to the detriment of child safety and, indirectly, for lowering the proper- ty values of current homeowners. Truth be told, these days there are so many worthwhile causes and groups that need a help- ing hand. With only so much money to go around, many people find it difficult deciding where to allocate their precious resources. So, forgive me if I put in a little plug for a cause near and dear to my heart. But, Girls Inc. of Durham (formerly Big Sisters of Ajax-Pick- ering) and the Big Brothers and Sisters of Ajax and Pickering both have important events coming up this month. Growing up without a father around, I had an influence in my life that made a difference like no other. While we didn't meet through Big Brothers, Doug filled that role and a whole lot more. He was a mentor, a sounding board, my staunchest supporter, and still the best friend anyone could ever want. Doug, his wife Susan and their kids made me part of their family, playing a bigger role in my life than they could ever know. Time and time again I hear simi- lar stories about young boys and girls who've been involved with Girls Inc. and the Big organization. Their success stories are heart- warming. Both groups are now in the midst of planning important fund-raisers that will offer them a necessary funding boost for the year ahead. Girls Inc. is holding its fourth an- nual Mall Crawl Walk-a-Thon fund- raiser Sunday, March 28. Partici- pants are asked to collect pledges and then walk the halls of the Pick- ering Town Centre until they mark off five-kilometres. For all you shop- pers, it's a great chance to get in a little window shopping. For its part, Big Brothers and Sisters is gearing up for its annual Bowl for Kids Sake event. Teams of bowlers can square off at the end of this month for the fun of it (or in the case of the News Advertiser, in a friendly rivalry with another team) after collecting pledges. Both events are the perfect op- portunity for families, classes, clubs and businesses to gather up a team, register and have a little fun (or do a little bragging) for a good cause. Pull together a team; you truly will be helping make a world of dif- ference. Tony Doyle's column appears every other Sunday. E-mail tdoyle@durhamregion.com. Although I personally think that’s what it is, they shouldn’t be going around saying that.” Mrs. Smith is one of the almost 100 peo- ple who have called the Region of Durham works department and water billing line to complain about Glacier, which recently opened a store in Oshawa. “Residents complained about the sales tactics and scare information they (Glaci- er) were conveying,” said Lloyd Murray, technical support manager for the works department, who got a call from Glacier and had the test done in his own house. “They’re calling homes advising there’s a need to get water tested...(when) there is absolutely no need. And the tests they do...are of no value whatsoever in deter- mining whether your water is safe.” Mr. Bourjeaurd called Glacier’s product “outstanding” and said the company is trying to provide a needed service. “All we’re trying to do is educate people about healthier lifestyle and the alterna- tives on how they can help prevent future health problems by drinking distilled water,” he said. But part of that “education” includes claims that drinking Durham’s chlorinat- ed water will kill you and that water-treat- ment plants bring in pure urine and feces. These assertions are accompanied by one test some experts call “deceptive.” I called Glacier and had Roy give me a sales demonstration. Here’s how it went: Three glasses of tap, bottled and dis- tilled water were lined up. Using a digital thermometer and a plastic stick with a light on top, the total dissolved solids and the conductivity of the water were mea- sured. Roy then mixed yellow food colouring and tiny black sprinkles in a glass of water to illustrate the urine and feces my local water-treatment plant was allegedly pro- cessing. The sprinkles turned out be chocolate shavings, though Roy didn’t in- dicate that when he did his demonstra- tion. “If we...each take a shot of bleach, we die instantly,” Roy said, mixing chlorine in the water to remove the yellow dye. “If we take a shot of bleach and add it to the water, we just die slowly. “Either way, we die.” Health Canada recognizes more studies need to be done on the long-term effects of high-level exposure to chlorine, but says “current scientific data shows that the benefits of chlorinating our drinking water (less disease) are much greater than any health risks.” Roy then put a four-pronged metal elec- tronic device called a precipitator into the tap and bottled water. He said it would “undissolve” the solids in the water. After a few minutes, the tap water turned a rusty orange colour, while the bottled water went a blackish-brown. Both were filled with hundreds of small chunks. But the precipitator is what makes water dirty, said the Ministry of the Environment and the Association of the Chemical Profession of Ontario in a ‘Toronto Star’ article. The electrodes - or the metal prongs - actually rust and cause the dirt, tests found. The ministry called the tool “de- ceptive.” “I don’t think it is deceptive (and) if they think it is...everyone’s (got a) right to their own freedom of speech,” Mr. Bour- jeaurd said. “All we’re doing with the pre- cipitator is showing there’s dissolved solids.” Roy went on to list the various carcino- gens in our water: arsenic, barium, lead, uranium, mercury and others. Yet substances such as arsenic and lead are naturally present in our environment, said Health Canada, and people are ex- posed to very, very low levels. Roy also said the Region only tests water once a year and that he had to “fight” to get copies of the water-quality reports. Yet Durham water is tested daily, quar- terly and yearly, and the test results are well below what the Province allows for safe consumption. The reports are available free to anyone, and are posted online, the Region said. “Durham Region water is safe. All test- ing results indicate that,” said Jurgen Mirsch, the superintendent of the York- Durham environmental water lab. “It’s monitored 24/7 for chlorine and has daily checks for water quality.” Roy also claimed fluoride was recently taken out of children’s toothpaste because he claimed it causes cancer, yet the Cana- dian Dental Association says there is no scientific link between fluoride and can- cer. Some companies have removed fluo- ride because children have a tendency to swallow toothpaste, and too much fluo- ride can lead to a non-life-threatening dis- ease called fluorosis, which can cause a discolouration of tooth enamel. Roy’s claims were allegedly backed up by a binder of reports he said were from a television show and Health Canada. One was a reported experiment that said chickens died of hardened arteries after drinking municipal water. Glacier is not a member of the Water Quality Association, despite the glossy flyer being distributed with WQA’s logo stating so. The matter has been forward- ed to WQA’s legal counsel, said Mark Rowzee director of education at the WQA. Mr. Rowzee also deals with ethics at WQA, a not-for-profit organization, that represents companies that sell water treatment products. “I’m not concerned about that,” Mr. Bourjeaurd said, adding the company “thought we (were) a member” and is in the process of trying to get “reinstated.” The flyer also reads “As seen on Oprah” - a statement a spokesman at Oprah Win- frey’s Harpo Productions said is not per- mitted. Mr. Bourjeaurd said the statement was referring to a doctor who has endorsed Glacier and has been on the show. He said he hadn’t seen the flyers, though the Os- hawa store manager said they came from the manufacturer and head office in New- market, where Mr. Bourjeaurd is based. The presentation left Mark (73) and Julie (68) Jones* of north Oshawa dis- gusted. “I’m a little angry inside that they’re trying to pull a fast one,” Mr. Jones said. “It’s a scare tactic to scare people into investing in this when they can’t af- ford it and don’t need it.” Mrs. Smith agreed. “If the same amount of pressure was put on a senior, they’re (Glacier) is going to terrify them,” she said, adding she asked four times if the person was selling something and was repeatedly told no. “Someone comes in and says poison again and again, how many time before you start to believe it?” Mr. Bourjeaurd said Glacier employees would never misrepresent themselves, and those who may have made “liquid poi- son” references would be reprimanded. “They’re proud of who they work for and what they’re selling and what they do for people,” he said. In a subsequent conversation, he asked why the newspaper was questioning him, when the Oshawa office of Glacier was “just a dealer.” *names have been changed. Ask The Podiatrist A march break can occur anytime during the year Ronald J. Klein B.Sc., D.P.M. Podiatrist-Foot Specialist A march break or stress fracture usually occurs after a long march or hike as was seen in army recruits on long 20 mile runs. The most common bone involved is the second metatarsal (50 per cent of the time) just behind the metatarsal joint where the toe attaches to the foot. The third and fourth metatarsals are also equally likely to experience a stress fracture at 25 per cent of the time each. A stress fracture occurs due to excessive, continuous pressure over a long period of time, unlike a regular fracture which is the result of a major trauma or force. The likelihood of a stress fracture occurring depends on the strength of the bone (density decreases with age) and the force applied. Besides marines or army recruits, a stress fracture of the metatarsal can be seen in long distance runners, aerobic exercisers or women walking any distance in high heeled shoes, which puts a lot of pressure on the forefoot. Over time repetitive stress will cause the bone to become fatigued and cracked. You would imagine that all fractures should show on an x-ray but that is not always so, especially with stress fractures. If an x-ray shows negative (no fracture) but pain, swelling and an increased temperature over the head of the metatarsal persist, take another x-ray 14 days after the initial onset of symptoms. Although a fracture line may still not show, new bone deposition will be noticeable at the injury site. Patients will usually compensate for the pain by walking on the outside of the foot or heel. Fractures of the metatarsals, unlike other fractures, do not require immobilization therefore, they do not require a cast. An elastic bandage bound around the foot and ankle is all that is required. However, all activities that put stress and pressure on the fracture site should cease especially the type of activity that caused the fracture in the first place. Comfortable shoes are most important and ultrasound should be avoided. Given time, the fracture will heal and you will be back doing all your activites - just exercise a little patience. Hope your march break was stress free. If you have a question you would like answered or a topic you would like answered, send it to ask the podiatrist, c/o the news advertiser. Denturists are the only professional’s legislated “specifically” to make dentures. For service and one on one contact with the person who is actually making your denture, see your local denturist for a consultation. Sore Spots The main reason for sore spots is ill-fitting dentures. It’s a combination of shrinking gums and denture wear. See the person who makes your dentures. New Dentures You can expect some adjustments for the first month after getting your dentures. It takes time for them to settle into place. At the first sign of discomfort, do not be alarmed. If it lasts more than three or four days contact your denturist. Upper Dentures The upper denture is the “good guy”, the one that gets all the smiles and causes the least discomfort. The big advantage of the upper denture is its suction. The air caught between the plate of the denture and the roof of the mouth makes an ideal suction cup. Lower Dentures The lower denture is the “culprit” that suffers malignant abuse. People tend to separate it from its upper counterpart. The lower denture has become somewhat of a misfit, and seeks refuge in the most unlikely places. It’s usually shoved in the bottom of drawers, under the bed, amongst lipsticks and combs in ladies’ handbags, lunch pails, back pockets, and if it have a caring owner, is submerged for an eternity in a denture bath. All is not lost You can have a “soft liner” put in your lower denture. This is a “permanent” liner and will stay soft as long as your denture lasts. Other reasons Medicatuib can give you “dry mouth”. This can cause sore spots. Bone chips can appear years after initial insertion. As we get older our body goes through change and tissue becomes more sensitive to pressure, which leads to sore spots. Poor oral hygiene can be the reason for denture discomfort. Dentures must be brushed thoroughly after every meal. To ease discomfort Rinse your mouth with baking soda or salt. Leave the offending denture out as much as possible. You should brush your gums, palate and tongue with a soft bristle toothbrush after every meal and before going to sleep. A sore mouth, if untreated, may lead to complications. If the problem recurs regularly, contact your local denturist. Service with a smile Seeing a denturist can save you money. Denturist fees are affordable because there are no cost mark-ups or outside delays. Make an appointment for full or partial, new or replacement dentures or whatever other denturist requirements you may need. A referral isn’t necessary. You can call Charles Wm. The vehicle was taken from an automotive shop in the Reach In- dustrial Park, Port Perry where it was undergoing mechanical re- pairs. To the dismay of police, the 50- year-old cruiser was later found at the scene of a crash in Greenbank. Police were called to the corner of Couves Lane and Hwy. 12 in Green- bank where they discovered the car - with its single red light on the roof and police logo on its doors - had crashed through a fence and then slammed into a garage. Damage to the vehicle is estimat- ed at $5,000 for front-end bodywork. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Detec- tive Doug Morse of the North Durham Community Police office at 905-579-1520, ext. 2676, toll free at 1-888-579-1520, ext. 2676 or Crime stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. This 1953 Chevrolet police car was stolen and hit with $5,000 in damages recently. The vehicle is used for parades across Durham. Epilepsy month tries to quell fears By Danielle Milley Staf f Writer DURHAM – Epilepsy Durham Region is raising awareness about the neurological disorder so those affected don’t have to be afraid anymore. “Epilepsy is a very quiet dis- order, people with epilepsy do not tell people they have epilep- sy. People are afraid to get fired or students are afraid no one will want to be their friend,” said Donna Eustis, market re- search analyst for Epilepsy Durham Region. March is Epilepsy Awareness Month and Epilepsy Ontario, in conjunction with local chapters, is holding its second annual lavender ribbon campaign. Ribbons are available at the organization’s local office in Whitby and at the Oshawa Cen- tre Tuesday, March 23. Epilepsy is a neurological dis- order that causes bursts of elec- trical activity in the brain, re- sulting in seizures. As much as two per cent of the population suffers from seizures, which is more than double the number of people with cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis and cystic fibrosis combined. For a $5 donation people can have a lavender seed packet and a ribbon mailed to them. “The reason for the lavender is the calming effect. People with epilepsy, if they’re stressed, can have a seizure,” Ms. Eustis said. All money raised by the local chapter stays in Durham to help with services such as adult support meetings. Another way the local chapter is raising money is through the sale of Lora the Labrador. Ms. Eustis designed Lora ex- clusively for Durham, but the 15-inch lavender stuffed dog is going to be available through other chapters across the coun- try. “She was designed to bring two types of awareness: one to associate lavender with epilepsy and two about the seizure dogs,” she said. Many people with epilepsy use guide dogs to prevent them from wandering while having a seizure or to just generally watch over them. Lora is to be available in June for $15, but is now available for pre-orders. For more information on epilepsy or Lora, call 905-666- 9926. The epilepsy office in Whitby is at 119 Ash St. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, March 21, 2004 PAGE 15 A/P Twelve years ago, Mike Glugosh was a hostage to his own fears and depression. Mike will share the story of his recovery and provide coping skills at a FREE seminar open to the public in your area. Symptoms of anxiety, panic and depression include heart palpitations, chest pains, dizziness, stomach problems, bewildered & spaced out feelings, confusion, shortness of breath, scary thoughts, trembling or shaking, nervous or panicky feelings, feeling helpless and hopeless, loss of appetite, excessively tired, and easily prone to guilt. See page 23 Dragon boat club battles rough waters Pickering athletes trying to raise funds for trip to worlds By Jeff Hayward Special to the News Advertiser PICKERING —The Pickering Dragon Boat Club is facing chal- lenges before it even hits the water for this year's world compe- tition. The club is sending three teams to South Africa in early April to compete at the 2004 World Club Crew Championships (WCCC) in Cape Town. In doing so, the club will have to overcome funding ob- stacles and problems with avail- ability of athletes. The club plans to send more than 40 people to the event, which runs April 16 to 18. Head coach Scott Murray said finding money hasn't been easy. "Dragon boating is not a sport that is funded by the govern- ment," Murray said, noting the club is looking to corporate spon- sors and fund-raisers to offset the estimated cost of $3,000 per per- son. "Fund-raising has been as suc- cessful as it can be (so far)," he added, noting the club has raised about $10,000 so far. Megan O'Donoghue, a member of the elite women's team, said she has had to make personal arrangements in order to attend. "I'll be missing all four of my exams," said the student at the Scarborough campus of the Uni- versity of Toronto. "It took them a while to get back to me with a de- cision, but they're allowing me to write the exams in August." The 19-year-old said the deci- sion was made in her favour be- cause she will be representing the country. She added that team members are all pitching in for the fund- raising effort. Tickets are being sold for $5 each or three for $10, with a chance to win a large- screen television. O'Donoghue chose dragon boating because of the level of challenge it presents. "It's a very physically punishing sport," she explained. To keep in top form, the team practises at the St. Lawrence Community Centre in Toronto, which provides weight training and cardiovascular activities. The club qualified for the world championships last year at the North American showdowns in Welland. Pickering is one of the few clubs in Canada going to South Africa, joining other entries from Mon- treal and British Columbia. Murray added some other clubs have already pulled out of the competition because of simi- lar challenges. For more information on the Pickering dragon boating club, visit www.pdbc.ca. Former Ajax grappler wins university title for Simon Fraser AJAX —A former Pickering High School graduate is the best university wrestler on the mat this year. Ja ke Ledoux, formerly with the Ajax-based Team Impact Wrestling Club and now on a scholarship to Simon Fraser Uni- versity in B.C., captured top spot in his 61-kilo weight class at the Canadian University Wrestling Championships at Brock Univer- sity in St. Catharines recently. Ledoux defeated Colin Wist of Saskatoon in the final of the weight division to claim his first national collegiate title. Ledoux won the Ontario Feder- ation of School Athletic Associa- tions (OFSAA) Wrestling Cham- pionships last year, while wrestling for Pickering High School. During his time with Team Impact, he won seven provincial wrestling titles. Last year at the nationals, he placed third in the juvenile men's catego- ry at 63 kilograms. Ledoux's victory at the univer- sity championships helped the SFU men's wrestling team to a second overall finish behind host Brock University in the team cat- egory. He'll compete this weekend at the Canadian Junior Wrestling Championships in Calgary. JAKE LEDOUX Wins for Simon Fraser University. Ledoux pins down national wrestling crown Durham club dominates provincial championships DURHAM —Traditionally, syn- chro smiles are for show; it's not like synchronized swimmers are a special breed of athletes who deprive themselves of oxy- gen just for kicks. Occasionally, though, you do see a genuine smile halfway through a gruelling routine. Such was the case at the recent Provincial Championships in Etobicoke, where smiles abounded on Durham girls who knew they were just that far ahead of their competition. Durham enthusiastically trounced the opposition, earn- ing the first-place trophy, six medals and 17 top-10 finishes in seven events. The Tier 7 team, coached by Leslie Wickens and consisting of Katie Cornish, Lianne Doerr, L isa Doerr, Lauren Lepage, Lindsay Maclean, Alison Rogin, and Kate Secor, brought home a bronze medal. The team's duet of Cornish and Lepage placed fourth; in figures, Cornish earned anoth- er fourth, and Lepage was ninth. The top Tier 6 team, coached by Holley Lundmark and con- sisting of Jordan Anderson, So- phie Baetz-Dougan, Nicole Larocque, Katie Lepage, Julia Maclean, Brianna MacLellan, Chelsey Matthews, and Carrie Mouck, brought home the first- place trophy, and their duets of Baetz-Dougan/Lepage and Maclean/Mouck placed second and fourth, respectively. Lepage was second in figures and solo; Matthews was third in figures and fourth in solo; Maclean was fourth in figures and sixth in solo; Baetz- Dougan was sixth in figures and solo; and MacLellan was ninth in solo. The second Tier 6 team, coached by Rochelle Fernandez and Lundmark and consisting of Samantha Albacete, Made- laine Baetz-Dougan, Alanna Beal, Angela Licata, Kayla Mal- comson, Allie Mear, and Alaina Wade, earned a sixth place rib- bon against tough competition. For girls who might be inter- ested in trying on a synchro smile, a new recreational pro- g ram will be starting after the March break. For further infor- mation, please visit the club's Web site at www.durhamsyn- chro.com or call 905-720-7747. All smiles for synchro swimmers Lightning finalists at Hamilton event DURHAM —The Durham West Lightning 'C' rep pee- wee hockey team compet- ed over its heads at the Leaside tournament last weekend, but showed it was up for the challenge. A determined Lightning club, playing in the tourna- ment's 'BB' level, nearly pulled off an improbable tournament victory, drop- ping a narrow 1-0 decision to the Hamilton Hawks in the final. In fact, the Lightning played the Hawks to a scoreless draw through two periods, with Hamil- ton popping the winner with only two minutes re- maining in the third peri- od. Durham West starting goaltender Chantelle Caissie earned most valu- able player honours in the final. The Lightning posted a 2-0-1 record in round-robin games. Durham West opened the tourney with a 2-0 victory over Vaughan. Victoria MacKenzie posted the shutout. Playing the host Leaside team in Game 2, Durham West set- tled for a 1-1 draw. They closed out the preliminary round with a 3-1 victory over the Hamilton Hawks. Other team members are captain Ashley Speers, Juliana Conte, Shannon McCarroll, Sarah Rankin, Meagan Harrison, Heather Kelly, Melinda Forgie, Courtney East, Julie Brooks, Jackleen Brooks, Kathryn Lessard, Shona Welsh, Jennifer Grieves, Kelsey Fran and Patricia Tillaart. Chuck East coaches the team, assisted by Steve Fo rg ie, David Welsh, Pat Speers and Dennis Kelly. No, I am not talking about the house, I am talking about your finances. Interest rates have dropped slightly over the past month, but don’t get too comfortable with this, as interest rates always seem to decline at this time of year. There should be a safety zone for roughly the next six weeks. Rates are being kept down because of the U.S. economy, When a solid improvement is evident, watch for our rates to rise at an accelerated pace. CREDIT RATING The most important thing people should realize is that without a good credit rating your ability to get that loan or mortgage is greatly diminished. There is a major misconception that prior problems go away once they have been dealt with. These will have a major impact for the next year, and a medium impact for the next three years. The three main things that have a negative impact on your credit report are #1- delinquency on your accounts. (always make at least the minimum payment) #2- exceeding your credit lim- its. (this has a major negative effect on your overall scoring) #3- an excessive amount of credit inquiries. ( the magic number seems to be three over a six month period.) WHY CENTRAL FUNDING GROUP ?
