Of the 270 dogs and 329 cats impounded at the Whitby shelter, none were euthanised because PAW could not find them homes. Pickering Councillor Bill McLean, who sits on the centre’s animal control committee and expressed outrage about PAW’s euthanasia numbers in 2000, which at the time he noted were higher than 60 per cent, said the change is attributable to a num- ber of new partnerships between PAW, pet stores, and adoption and rescue groups. “When I first came on the ani- mal control committee, one of the things I was concerned about was the number of animals, both cats and dogs, being euthanised,” Coun. McLean said. “We’ve come a long, long way in the last three years.” “We did a major overhaul with the animal control centre...work- ing with other rescue groups and turning pets over there and hav- ing them adopt them out, as op- posed to going with the (old) standard five days at the shelter and if they’re not claimed, eu- thanising them.” In 2001, PAW killed 105 of 252 stray dogs and 223 of 265 stray cats, although its activity report did not break down reasons why the animals were killed. The same year, PAW found homes for 30 dogs and 50 cats, compared to 56 dogs and 74 cats in 2003. PAW still euthanised 21 dogs and 185 cats last year due to age, illness, injuries or temperament. Fred Foote is this year’s Rotary Classic honouree By Brian McNair OSHAWA - Yo u get the sense Fred Foote is sorry he didn’t play hockey as a child. It hasn’t prevented him, however, from making a huge impact on the game in Oshawa, where he has served in various capacities in the NASC over the past 32 years. Foote, 61, is being recog- nized as the 2004 Rotary Hock- ey Classic Honouree at this year’s tournament, which runs March 15-20 at the Civic Audi- torium. It’s an honour that should make the entire Foote family proud, as his wife, Pam, and sons Donald and Darren have also been heavily involved along the way. “It’s sort of a family affair,” says Foote, who started out as a hockey parent before jumping behind the bench himself a couple of years later. Foote says his fondest mem- ory came when he coached a North Oshawa novice team to a championship, something he had never experienced as a child since he hadn’t played the game. “The first time you win a championship, you remember,” he says. “It stays with you forev- er.” Foote’s proudest accom- plishment, however, is some- thing that has affected far more people. When he joined the NASC hockey committee as first vice chair 27 years ago, Foote says “enrollment was reeling, there was no money and no rules.” He and a number of other dedicated volunteers helped turn things around - and now NASC hockey is thriving with some 1,100 youth aged five to 17 playing on 64 teams. “We helped build it up to where it is today, which is on par with anything in the city,” he says. Ron Guiltinan, who has served as the NASC chair for the past 35 years, was one of those who worked closely with Foote to help set things right. “He’s a guy that’s behind the scenes and he’s done a lot for the NASC in particular,” Guilti- nan says of Foote. “He’s a guy who’s really been dedicated, a good person. He’s well respect- ed.” Foote has coached novice, atom and peewee teams and was hockey chair for North Oshawa Park before taking the position on the NASC executive. In addition to serving four terms as vice chair, Foote was NASC hockey chair for eight years. He is currently NASC hockey treasurer (six years) and first vice chair with the NASC committee (eight years). He has also coached NASC select teams, served as conven- er for several divisions and been the NASC representative to both the Ice Council and the Oshawa Minor Hockey Associa- tion. His wife, meantime, was president for North Oshawa girls’ hockey and also coached for six years. She has also served as the NASC hockey committee secretary and treasurer. Donald, at 37 Fred’s oldest son, has refereed and coached in the NASC system. “For a long time, it was just a payback for my children play- ing,” Foote explains of his initial involvement. “Now it’s like a hobby,” he adds. “Everybody has to do something and this is what I do.” A/P PAGE 2 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, March 14, 2004 www.durhamregion.com Region reconsidering ban on horses By Keith Gilligan Staff Writer DURHAM – Equestrians cleared a hurdle Wednes- day and could soon be back riding in the Durham For- est. The Durham works com- mittee is recommending the ban on horseback rid- ing in Durham Forest be re- considered. The matter will be debated by council on March 24. Regional solicitor An- drew Allison said procedu- rally, re-examining the issue would be a better ap- proach. Robin John, a member of the Trans- Canada Trail committee and the Uxbridge Horse- man’s Association, told the committee equestrians are “befuddled” about the ban on horses in the forest. “We’ve tried for many, many years to be good citi- zens,” she said “We love the forest. We haven’t heard of any complaints.” Helmut Hitscherich, a member of the Ontario Trail Riders Association, said the horse was the “ani- mal that opened up the country. I’ve been riding in the Durham Forest for over 30 years without one inci- dent.” On Feb. 11, Durham council approved an agree- ment with the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Au- thority to jointly manage the forest. The agreement banned horses from the Durham Forest, except for the Roseville tract. Horse riding was banned to protect the Region from possible liability in the case of an accident. Shortly after, equestrians began protesting their ex- clusion and the matter had to be revisited. “Equestrians haven’t done a thing to deserve this treatment,” Mr. Hitscherich said. “Don’t force us out onto the road. That’s an ac- cident waiting to happen.” He said riders carry $5 million in insurance and would also be willing to sign a waiver. Ms. John said insurers “will all attest to the fact equestrians are a very low risk. We really do appreci- ate the forest and we are conscientious users.” Uxbridge Regional Coun- cillor Susan Self said she’s never heard of an accident involving an equestrian in the forest. “The only alternative is for riders to go out onto the road,” she stated, adding that would be the 7th Con- cession. “They would have to fight with the gravel trucks. That’s a far more danger- ous issue.” Pickering Regional Councillor Rick Johnson said there’s a track record of safety among riders. “We shouldn’t even be here to discuss this. It flies in the face of being Canadi- an.” www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, March 14, 2004 PAGE 3 A/P www.opg.com putting our energy to good use JOIN PICKERING NUCLEAR DURING MARCH BREAK FOR GREAT FAMILY FUN! McLean said they were “wild” barn cats that could not be trained, although later he said the only ones being euthanised are those that are injured or at the point where its “inhuman” to keep them alive. Whitby Councillor Lorne Coe, who also sits on the PAW committee, said a “rigorous” public education, advertising program and new relation- ships with rescue groups across the region, as well as the Durham District Board of Education, have helped to end the killing of animals because no adoptee could not be found. “I think it’s wonderful news,” he said. “I’ve had animals all my life, and I’m also an advo- cate of ensuring that people within the three (municipali- ties) understand how they can fulfil their obligations as pet owners.” Coun. McLean said public education programs have helped reduced the number of animals that make their way to PAW over the last two years. It has gone “leaps and bounds” not only in terms of euthana- sia, but in terms of being a “more compassionate” organi- zation, he said. Durham Regional Police Sergeant Paul Malik said the shooting happened March 9 at a Pickering home. Two youths were playing video games in the basement of the home of the accused when an argument allegedly began over the disappear- ance of one of the games, say police. “As a result of that the 15- year-old went upstairs and got a pellet gun,” Sgt. Malik said. A short time later, several shots were fired from about seven feet away, police report. One shot just missed the victim’s eye and the other shots damaged his cheeks. Sgt. Malik said the victim ran home. “The 12-year-old is at home and doesn’t require any med- ical treatment,” he said, adding he is expected to make a full recovery and not suffer any permanent in- juries. The 15-year-old, who can’t be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has been charged with assault causing bodily harm, careless use of a firearm, uttering threats, possession of weapon dangerous, discharg- ing an air gun or pistol with intent, and pointing a firearm. The accused is to appear May 4 in Ontario Court of Justice in Oshawa. Pickering councillors Kevin Ashe and Bill McLean also dropped in for 45 minutes - Pickering council passed a motion last month re- questing Rouge Valley hold consultations before making decisions regarding service changes. Katie Cronin-Wood, director of communications at Rouge Valley, said the information shared in the forum addressed what the hospital was trying to find out. “People were still very con- cerned tonight, but I was able to capture those feelings into the three questions (asked by the hospital),” she said after the meeting. Two recurring themes were how important the rehab unit is and how transportation should be considered in deci- sion making. As part of Wednesday’s ses- sion, as well as the previous two in Ajax and the one in Scarborough, the hospital sought feedback on three areas: the public’s expecta- tions are for health care in gen- eral and at Rouge Valley; what Rouge Valley does well and where can it improve; and what does Rouge Valley need to consider when locating ser- vices. Another common point made by several people was that residents in Scarborough have several other hospitals they can go to while residents of Pickering and Ajax depend on their local hospital. “Scarborough has a lot more facilities around it and we don’t have that here. It makes a bigger difference if we lose services,” said Dr. Romas Stas, a physician in Ajax. The last public consultation is in Whitby, March 23, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Iroquois Park. Ms. Cronin-Wood said the hos- pital is also meeting with a couple of groups, staff and health-care partners in the coming weeks. While there is already plenty to celebrate in the two communities, our mayors are telling residents we ain't seen nothing yet. Pickering's Dave Ryan and Steve Parish of Ajax took guests at the recent Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade's annual mayoral ad- dress on a trip to the future. The two talked about the success- es the communities have enjoyed while laying out what's ahead. And at first blush, the future does look bright. In Pickering, the City is into the second phase of its growth management study, which will guide much of how another 77,000 people and 33,000 jobs will find their way to the municipality's northern environs. In addition, the case for a regional airport looks more real by the day, further offering signs Pickering will be a point of destination for residents and business alike in the next decade. Over in Ajax, a whole new world has been opened to the Town with the recent unveiling of the new Hwy. 401 interchange at Salem Road. The new highway link offers businesses the easy and convenient access they need when moving goods in our fast- paced world. Throw in 1,000 acres of undeveloped industrial land and an aggressive marketing campaign by the Town intended to stir up employment opportunities, and the picture, like in Pick- ering, is also one of a place where people will flock to live and work all in one community. As more and more people and organizations each year look to escape the congested big-city life of Toronto, they will be turning their attention to other regions of the Greater Toronto Area. Offering a well-researched and detailed plan makes the job of selling a community easier. Pickering and Ajax are well posi- tioned geographically and are well on their way to reaping the benefits of the exodus to the 'burbs. And, if both municipalities back up their oft-repeated assur- ances that the growth will be done at a sensible pace, and be supported by the proper infrastructure and services, they will be the first choice of many. Stick to the plan and the future will indeed be bright. A/P PAGE 6 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, March 14, 2004 www.durhamregion.com Police job action needs attention from Durham’s top cop The Durham Regional Police Service is at a crossroads. Of course, they've been here be- fore. The question is, how long until the two sides in the current dispute settle their differences and get back to business as usual? Police staff in the union, as you've read, is participating in a job action that's lasted about two weeks now. There's little doubt the safety of the public is still officers' top priority, and the bad guys are still being ar- rested. But the Region's bank ac- count must be collecting dust. In a time when every dollar counts, with tax increases looming, increased politician salaries and the inevitable request for an in- creased budget for policing, we can't afford less money coming in from traffic tickets. Under the work-to-rule, Durham police traffic tickets are pretty much optional for the time being and you have to wonder how much this will cost when it ends. What isn't clear at all though, is what will get things back to normal. One thing that hasn't been men- tioned, and it needs to be, is Durham Region needs its chief of police now as much as ever before. Chief Kevin McAlpine is on vaca- tion in Florida right now and not expected back until March 24. As just one voice among the thousands of voters in this region - you know, the people who pay taxes and pay for the police budget - I'm asking the chief to come home and rally his troops. Cutting a vacation short is unfair. But in such an im- portant position, sometimes sacri- fices need to be made. Chief, come home and be a leader to the officers of Durham Region. Even if one man can't make the dif- ference, you have to be a part of solving the problem. This is a show of solidarity against what these men and women in the job action see as unfair and heavy-handed tactics by their man- agement. Chief McAlpine is the top cop in that regard and should be here to answer to the police board and help facilitate a return to nor- mal work duties. A vacation can be rescheduled. In contrast, damage to the relation- ship between officers and their bosses will be a lot harder to recov- er from. David Stell's column appears every other Sunday. E-mail dstell@durhamregion.com. Ian Kitai’s SARS efforts ‘demonstrated excellence’ at local hospital site By Danielle Milley Staff Writer AJAX – Dr. Ian Kitai has been hon- oured for his leadership during last year’s severe acute respiratory syn- drome (SARS) outbreak. The Ajax pediatrician and head of Rouge Valley Health System’s in- fection control team received the Council Award from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of On- tario late last month. The award is given out four times a year to “outstanding Ontario physicians who have demonstrated excellence and come closest to meeting society’s vision of an ideal physician.” Dr. Kitai sees the award as an ho- nour for the whole Rouge Valley team. “We were successful against SARS because of a collective effort at Rouge Valley Health System,” he said. “Because of the administra- tion, the staff and the heroes, the nurses. “I believe it is an award for every- one and it includes all the external people.” Between both of its sites, in Ajax and Scarborough, Rouge Valley handled 50 probable and suspect cases of SARS. While the hospital cared for close to 12 per cent of On- tario’s SARS patients, there was not a single known incident of transmission to staff. “(It was) the only institution of its size that did not have staff transmission,” Dr. Kitai said. A feat he contributes both to luck and staff efforts. “This was everyone thinking on their feet. It was the individual ac- tions of nurses each time and doc- tors each time that prevented transmission,” he said. SARS kept Dr. Kitai and all Rouge Valley staff extremely busy. “I was probably working 14-hour days and I was on call constantly for 85 days,” he said. “Dr. Kitai, the infection control team and indeed all staff at RVHS are to be commended for their skilled and compassionate re- sponse during the outbreak,” said Kathryn Ramsay, the hospital board chairman. Dr. Kitai has worked in Ajax since 1995. He is also a tuberculosis specialist at the TB clinic at the Hospital for Sick Children. He received his medical degree from the University of Witwater- strand in South Africa in 1977 and has worked in the United Kingdom, Zimbabwe and Manitoba. Provincial honours for Ajax doctor A.J. I have been delivering the papers for just over a year now. It has been fun being able to get outside on nice sunny days, but a bit hard on the days that it snows or rains. I’d like to thank my parents for driving me when the weather is bad so that I don’t get soaked or freeze. In the time that I have been delivering the papers I have had 2 complaints which I apologized for both times. One was for walking on the lawn and the other was for delivering the paper to a stop while the people were on vacation. The best part of delivering the papers, other than getting outside, is the money. Every collection period I get to keep 25% of the money, for whatever I want, and the rest goes into the bank. With the money I get to keep I am able to buy Christmas and birthday presents as well as buy things for myself like shoes or clothes. With the money I save in my bank account I am going to buy a car when I get my license to drive. Delivering the News Advertiser has been fun and has taught me lots of things. It has helped me to deal with people, learn how to save, I get exercise and it has given me independence by having my own money. My parents have been very supportive which makes a big difference. This is my success story. It only goes to follow that if you’re not doing that on a regular basis, then you’re ob- viously not in a position to do it effectively or safely.” CAW Local 100 represents approximately 2,300 unionized mechanics, machinists and electricians in Canada, includ- ing 560 workers in Ontario. On Feb. 20, they walked off the job at CN after the two sides failed to reach a new contract. Most recent talks also ended with- out an agreement on March 7. CN has pledged to keep its trains rolling since the strike began, and activated a contin- gency plan consisting of man- agement staff taking over some of the CAW functions, such as rail and car inspec- tions. Mr. Gouveia said manage- ment may have specific train- ing in some areas, but said their skills are not properly up-to-date to ensure safety on the rails, including those in Durham Region. “To some extent they have the training, but it’s the type of job that unless you do it on an ongoing basis, you tend to lose the skills. You tend to lose the experience that you’ve gained,” he said. “It’s not something you can just step into overnight and all of a sudden perform these tasks and do it competently. I simply don’t think that’s a possibility. “Let me put it to you this way: if you could replace 2,000 employees across the country on a regular basis and could do it safely, then believe me, there wouldn’t be 2,000 me- chanics working for Canadian National Railway. To make the argument that you can...and run an operation that’s safe and effective, it’s absolutely lu- dicrous,” he added. Ian Thomson, CN media spokesman for operational is- sues, said in no way has the strike endangered rail safety. He insisted things are “hum- ming along” as usual. “All our people that are ac- tually doing the work, car in- spections and those kinds of things, are all certified railway inspectors. We cannot operate otherwise,” Mr. Thomson said. “Transport Canada is our overall federal auditor...they are the regulator and the orga- nization that ensures compli- ance to the safety require- ments. They continue to do that work, and we continue to be in compliance with all those reg ulations.” Mr. Thomson also rejected Mr. Gouveia’s claim there have been a higher number of small train derailments occurring in railway yards, particularly MacMillan yard in Toronto. “That’s categorically not true. Absolutely not true,” said Mr. Thomson. “The bottom line is, we are meeting safety requirements on a day-to-day basis. We are operating at or near normal. It isn’t if you visit Dentistry 4 Kids. Thanks to a lively new office location as well as exceptional dental care and service, a trip to the dentist is not only pleasant but also fun. The new office, located in the Pickering Village, features a separate play area with a delightful and colourful under-the-sea theme that includes 3D sea murals and a tropical aquarium. It also features lots of entertainment for the kids such as Playstation 2, Game Cube and Xbox. There’s also a 30-foot long cavity-free street as well as televisions and movies in every room. “We’re not just people who like working with kids,” says owner Dr. Shelina Dhanji. “We are licensed pediatric dentists.” Not exactly sure what a pediatric dentist is? Simply put they’re like a pediatrician except they specialize in pediatric dental care. In addition to the required four years of dental school, pediatric dentists complete another two to three years of specialized training. (For more information visit www.aapd.org.) At Dentistry 4 Kids they also firmly believe in preventative dentistry and follow the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry’s recommendation to begin dental care by the time children reach their first birthday. By starting early, a majority of dental problems can be prevented, including cavities. And with no major problems to be dealt with, a visit to the dentist will be much more enjoyable for your child. Dentistry 4 Kids is now located at 81 Old Kingston Rd. and can be reached at 905-428-0020. Medical referrals are not necessary. But it’s not just the animated new surroundings that contribute to the overall pleasant experience; it’s also the level of care and service patients receive. Do You Have a Few pounds to Lose? Evelyn Arbour is a Registered Nutritionist. She is also someone who has experienced change in her life when it comes to losing weight by changing her eating habits. “I know how it feels physically and emotionally to have a weight problem and digestive disorders,” she explains. “I lost over 40 pounds and have kept it off. This experience helps me to work with my clients so they can achieve their goals.” Evelyn has designed a 4 step program for her clients that is easy to follow and has resulted in long term results. The first step is a 1 hour consultation. She finds out what you’ve been eating and how you’ve been feeling. It’s a time to learn about good and bad eating habits as well as the differences between good and bad digestion. Next you take home a questionnaire. This helps you to see which systems you may be having trouble with including digestion, elimination and respiratory as well as pr oblems associated with vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Once this is done the next step is to determine whether you need a detoxification program. “You may feel bloated all the time, have bad breath or feel tired all the time,” says Evelyn. “Detoxification is the body’s natural process of elimination or neutralizing of toxins via the liver, the kidneys, the urine, feces, exhalation and perspiration.” This step of the program also includes your eating plan based on your needs whether it’s for detoxification, weight loss or both. Evelyn provides you with easy and affordable recipes and an individualized eating plan which will include herbal supplements for detoxification. She will also instruct you on healthy food substitutions in particular replacing the 4W’s: white rice; white flour; white pasta and white sugar. The last part of the program is your maintenance stage when Evelyn reexamines your eating habits and how you feel to determine if you need to modify your eating plan. You are looking for a quick fix to get their grades up - but few quick fixes last. Let’s explore how we can really help. Why do kids struggle or fail? There are specific reasons and, if we wish to help them, we must find the reason. Let’s take a boy and mathematics for example, but the answer to this question applies to almost any subject. Here are a few of the most common problems that cause students to struggle in mathematics. i) Skill gaps: These are gaps in his skill base that prevent him from learning and understanding the next concept. For example, you cannot truly understand division until you understand multiplication. Have him assessed for current skill gaps in his math skills. ii) Reading comprehension: Actually, believe it or not, this is the most common reason. Many kids cannot read a math problem and understand what is being asked. Check his reading comprehension level to make sure it is at grade level. iii) Problem-solving strategies: Many (read most) students do not know how to problem-solve. They rely on memory to tell them what to do in a specific situation. When faced with a challenging mathematical problem, students must apply a specific process of problem-solving. If he does not, he will fail. Make sure he learns how to problem-solve. iv) Study and work habits: Did he hand in every assignment? Did he complete his homework on time? Did he cram for tests or was he doing a little review every week throughout the school year? When students have difficulty with a particular subject, they often leave it to the last moment rather than face the unpleasant task. This is a major mistake. The harder the subject, the more regularly it MUST be reviewed. v) What are his expectations? Does he hate the subject? Is the teacher unfair? And so on. What we are after here is to discover his state of mind. Students who expect to fail, often transform themselves into victims. This is a negative failure chain and becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy. Most failure is really mental meltdown not just a skill shortage. Be sure to consider his attitude and help turn this around in order to help him be able to succeed. In order to answer these questions, you may need to work with an expert to obtain a complete assessment of your child’s current skills as well as his future potential. Once you have identified the root problem(s), then you can begin to really help you child learn how to succeed. O xford Learning has been helping parents and children for years identify why they are struggling and learn how to succeed at school. At O xford Learning, beginning with an in-depth assessment, children are offered individual programs that address their needs in academics, learning skills and self esteem. It is a unique approach that offers them the tools and confidence to succeed now and in the future. Call today to find out more about how Oxford can help your child. According to the Ontario Rab- bit Education Organization, Easter bunnies are usually sur- rendered to shelters or released outdoors not long after the month in which they’re pur- chased. In North America alone, eight out of every 10 rabbits end up abandoned. The Ontario Rabbit Educa- tion Organization wants to edu- cate the public this Easter about what pet rabbits are and what they are not. Rabbits are social, intelligent and active compan- ions that need as much care and attention as a dog or a cat. Rabbits are not just for East- er; if you buy one you have made a long commitment of time and patience. Rabbits have a lifespan of six to 10 y ears and, like every other pet, a rabbit must be cared for. With a rabbit comes the need to “bunny-proof” your house to provide your rabbit with toys and other means for it to stay physically fit and to provide a proper diet and veterinary care. Rabbits don’t enjoy being picked up and can’t survive in a small locked cage forever. They need exercise and a com- panion - either another rabbit, another animal or a person. When rabbits reach sexual ma- turity, they should be spayed or neutered. If a rabbit still sounds like a good pet for you, a good place to visit is a local shelter. For those who are unsure, though, a chocolate rabbit may be the best Easter gift you can give your kids. Since the dawn of time, the start of a new day brings with it the hopes of new beginnings while it dispells the fears and anxieties of a dark night. Both humankind and animals have revelled and joyously awaited the spring equinox. It is no accident that the new year is celebrated at the same time that our star starts its new journey to once again climb to its summer summit in the heavens. So while it may have been a ‘long, long, lonely winter’, in the words of George Harrison, ‘Little darling... photography by Walter Passarella But not before taking time to talk By Brian McNair Staff Editor DURHAM —Apparently Elvis Stojko has more in common with the King than just his given name. Stojko, who was in Oshawa as part of the star-studded Cele- bration on Ice show recently, took some time beforehand to chat with the News Advertiser, revealing, among other things, that he is an aspiring singer. Although he has no delusions of Presley-like grandeur, Stojko seems comfortable with life after the rigours of amateur skating. At 31, he is still having fun in a sport that rewarded him with three world championships and two Olympic silver medals. And now that he has some time away from the rink, he is spending it with friends and family while dreaming of a possible career in the entertainment industry. News Advertiser:Do you enjoy performing at a smaller, more in- timate venue like the Civic Audi- torium? Stojko:The smaller venues don't get a whole lot of skating, so they really appreciate it. It's a sellout, you get the electricity in the arena, everyone's excited. It's nice to skate for a smaller crowd like this because it's easier to connect with the people. It feels good. News Advertiser:What is your schedule like these days? Stojko: It is kind of tight right now, away from the tour as well. I've been busy doing other shows and other tours, so I've been quite busy. But it's been good; I enjoy it. I don't have the stress of training so hard every day. I'm having fun still doing some triple axels without having to stress so much. News Advertiser:How difficult was the decision to turn pro? Stojko: It wasn't really so diffi- cult to make the decision at the time because you kind of know when you just want to move on with your life and do other things. It takes up so much of your time. I'm busy doing shows, but I have more time for myself. When I go home, spend time with the family, travelling or whatever, not skating, I can do things I want to do. Each person is different. I retired later on. I stuck around for an extra four years... It was good for me. I re- ally enjoyed competing still and did well even at that age, but now I want to move on and spend some time with my girl- friend. She's been waiting pa- tiently. News Advertiser:What is the main difference between being an amateur and a professional? Stojko:Amateur is more than a full-time job; it's 24/7. You have to eat properly, sleep properly, everything you do, every move you make goes toward that goal. Even when you take time away, you're taking time away because you have to rest for that goal. No matter where you are, you're still thinking about it... You sacrifice everything. You sometimes sac- rifice friendships and family and in the end if it works, it's worth it and you gain so much from it. When you retire, you have time to be more relaxed. You have to work hard. It's not easy doing tour after tour because you have a job to do. It's nice to be able en- ter tain, still skate and not leave it entirely. News Advertiser: Do you have any regrets? Stojko:No. Two (Olympic) sil- vers, one of them was pretty darn close, the other one was right there as well. I have some world championships, I have six world medals, seven national ti- tles. But it's not so much the medals. It's what you gain from it as a person and what you learn about life and how you can take it to the next chapter and be happy with that... I knew I could do it when it counted and to me that's a huge boost because it didn't matter what (medal) I got, I knew I did it on the day. And I knew the times I could have been first and was second. That's OK because that's the way the sport is. But I know I did it on the day and that's what counts... That's all we can ask of ourselves in anything we do. We don't always get what we think we deserved. News Advertiser: Figure skating has been in the news for the wrong reasons, specifically with the Olympic judging scandal. Do you believe the sport is being cleaned up? Stojko: Slowly. I mean, they do a great job at nationals and then they mess up a Four Nations in Hamilton. The rule changes are in the right direction, but they still have to work out details be- cause you can't have a guy falling four times and missing most of the elements and still winning. It isn't good for the sport. It's going to take awhile to get it back. News Advertiser:Do you think judging ever cost you a place on the podium? Stojko: There were a few times that it was a little weird with the judging, but we all have had that. Somewhere down the line, we've all had something go strange and you should have been higher or you should have actually been lower. It happens, but in the end it evens out, the good and the bad. News Advertiser: What do you like to do when you're away from the rink? Stojko: I'm a huge movie buff, I love movies. If I'm working out, it's martial arts. I do that every day. I'm singing now quite a bit. My dad's a tenor in a group and I sang when I was little. I want to get into acting too. Just spend- ing time with my friends and my girlfriend, who lives in Alabama, so I go down and spend time with her. I'm rarely here in Cana- da. News Advertiser:What kind of music do you like? Stojko:What I'm listening to right now is Nickelback. I love Nickelback, great band. I listen to everything pretty much. News Advertiser:If you could sit down and have a beer or coffee with any one person, who would it be? Stojko: Oh jeez. Of the top of my head, I think I'd like to meet Jim Carrey. We were both born in Newmarket. I don't drink beer, but I usually have a cranberry, pineapple half and half. So, I'd buy him a beer and we could sit down and chat. News Advertiser:What does the future hold for Elvis Stojko? Stojko:I want to get more in- volved with singing and acting. My martial arts has been really good to me and working with my kung-fu teacher, he's a screen- writer too, so he's going to L.A. a little bit and hopefully getting some movie stuff on the go. That's what we're gunning for. And I love singing, so I'd like to maybe record something later on. We'll see. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, March 14, 2004 PAGE 19 A/P Sports SUNDAY, MARCH 14, 2004 ✦ News Advertiser ✦ AL RIVETT, SPORTS EDITOR 905-683-5110 EXT. 250 It’s over Monarchs lose to top seed at OFSAA... The Monarchs, who defeated two higher ranks teams in the first and seconds rounds, faced a stiff test Thursday night against the top- ranked and two-time defending champion Eastern Commerce Col- legiate Institute Saints of Toronto in a quarter-final game at the Uni- versity of Guelph. The Monarchs came up short 59- 45 at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) championships. The Monarchs continued to hang tough in the third quarter, with the Saints still in front 40-32. The Saints outscored St. Mary 19-13 in the final stanza to nail down the victory. Nathan Thomas continued his strong play at the Ontario show- case by leading the Monarchs with a 16-point effort. Ronnie Williams of Eastern Commerce had 14 points and Tristan Blackwood added 13.
