HomeMy WebLinkAboutNA2004_03_10Pickering residents will be asked for input on nuclear alerting system By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING –The City is giv- ing residents a chance to have their say on where nuclear alerting towers and sirens should be erected. Monday night Pickering council voted unanimously in favour of undertaking a public consultation on the proposed locations for the sirens and the equipment to be used. “This is a very important link to the community... Our municipality has always been on record in favour of a public alerting system,” said Ward 1 Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner, who introduced the motion. “The public consulta- tion process is a good method to let the community have open dialogue with the appro- priate levels.” The sirens are a provincial requirement within three kilo- metres of the Pickering Nu- clear Generation Station (and all nuclear stations). Council maintains it has always sup- ported the public alerting sys- tem but wanted the public consulted before the equip- ment was purchased. Coun. Brenner said for some reason there were no consultations before the Re- gion’s Emergency Manage- ment Office purchased the sirens and poles. (Ontario Power Generation paid for the equipment). Ivan Ciuciura, director of emergency management for Durham Region, said Tuesday the intention all along was to hold public meetings once the equipment had been pur- chased. Frenchman’s Bay wants to be part of building plans By Mike Ruta Staff Writer DURHAM –Two local school communities on Monday night made their final pitch for help in dealing with over- crowding. The Durham District School Board held a public input session on its third building plan, to be ap- proved by trustees March 22. “We’d like to remain on the accommodation plan and that’s why we’re here tonight,” Karen Johnson told trustees. The school community council chairman at Cadarackque Public School in Ajax says the school, built for about 270 students, cur- rently has 700 pupils and 13 portables. Next year, it is slated to have 731 kids and 16 portables, and in 2006, 800 students and 19 porta- bles. “Where are we going to School board hears parents’ plea ✦See Parents page 2 LIFT THE LID The 2005 Corvette is putting the top down Wheels, pullout IF THE SHOES FIT PineRidge Arts Council puts out bids on annual business Entertainment, 8 Briefly... Rae Coulter, executive di- rector of St. Paul’s-on-the- Hill food bank, said an in- crease in users has left the shelves emptier than usual for this time of year. “We’re getting more clients and I’m afraid that means the food goes faster,” she said. In January alone the food bank had 21 new clients. In addition, the number of users jumped 13 per cent in 2003 from 2002. “Every month we’re getting more and more,” Ms. Coulter said. “It’s mostly families with children.” The nature of the clientele means school snacks, gra- nola bars and other food for children is in great demand. “We need things like cereal, apple juice, canned fruit, canned meat and dried soup,” said Cindy Bowles, a board member. “J ust about anything,” Ms. Coulter added. Usually when they run out of items, food bank officials will go shop- ping to keep supplies up until the next food drive. “Thanksgiving and Christ- mas have to pull us through to the summer, we’ve never had to buy this early in the Food bank putting out SOS Jason Liebregts/ News Advertiser photo Rae Coulter of St. Paul’s-on-the-Hill food bank, is asking area residents to help restock the shelves as it’s been a particularly hard start to the year. Ajax Wards 1 and 2 Trustee Mar- ilyn Crawford has said she will not support the plan if Cadarackque is not on it. In Pickering, Morgan Dever says Frenchman’s Bay Public School, with roughly 850 students, is the second largest in the district and it needs attention. “The facility is just too small to be really sustainable of a student body of the size we have,” he says. Mr. Dever is the chairman of the school expansion committee. He explains the school needs boys’ and g irls’ washrooms on the first floor, a gym that can accommodate all students without tight scheduling, and one that can hold parents for school events. Among other needs, the library is far too small to store reference ma- terials used by both English and French immersion students, he says. “As new dollars come from the Province, put Frenchman’s Bay at or near the top of the list,” Mr. Dever asked. The $27.7-million draft plan calls for new schools in Brooklin, Ajax and Oshawa, and an addition to Cadarackque. This fall, Phase 2 of the plan will be presented to trustees, with staff recommendations for new schools and additions to be built between 2006 and 2008. It’s like a VW Beetle on top of a concrete tower.” Wa rd 3 City Councillor David Pick- les said if there was a perception in the public that council wasn’t con- cerned, that’s wrong. “An alerting system is necessary and if there isn’t better technology out there at least give the public the time to look at it before they put it in the ground,” he said. Neither Coun. Brenner or Mr. Ciu- ciura could say whether a change in equipment would be made because of the public consultation. “That would still be yet to be de- cided... The equipment purchased was the equipment in the design ap- proved by the Region, Pickering and all the lakeshore municipalities,” Mr. Ciuciura said. The concrete poles are about 45- feet tall with a siren on top. Coun. Brenner said Tuesday even if the equipment isn’t changed in the three-kilometre range, it might be something to consider for a future ex- panded public alerting system. “Keep in mind it’s going to span out to 100-kilometre radius based on a recommendation from the Province,” he said. Of the 27 sirens to be erected in the three-kilometre radius, Mr. Ciuciura said there have been concerns raised about the location of six. But he added he has talked to the consul- tants and they’re prepared to look at moving them. The details of the public consulta- tion have not yet been decided. “It should be as soon as possible,” Coun. Brenner said. University president hopes Province will approve building plan soon By Mike Ruta Staff Writer D URH AM – Gary Polonsky hopes the Province will sign off on the University of On- tario Institute of Technology’s business plan within the next week. It would clear the way for UOIT to borrow the $90 million needed to complete three uni- versity buildings slated to open this fall, in- cluding the new campus library. “We’ll know in a couple of weeks,” Mr. Polonsky said recently. “The government asked for a complete business plan and we’ve done what we’ve been asked to do and now we’re awaiting their reaction.” The former Progressive Conservative gov- ernment supported the UOIT’s plan to bor- row $190 million to complete university build- ings A2, A3 and A6. With almost 6,800 square metres of space, they are to add a number of lab rooms to the campus. The Liberal gov- ernment has already given the OK for the college to borrow $100 million, and is pre- pared to approve the borrowing of the re- maining $90 million. Provincial approval is required because the loan would be guaran- teed by Durham College, a Crown corpora- tion. “The UOIT business case is currently with the ministry, and we’re still reviewing it,” says Dave Ross, spokesman for the Training, Colleges and Universities and Education ministries. Once that hurdle is cleared, Mr. Polonsky says the UOIT will not require provincial ap- proval for the next phase of construction, which he hopes will start in March, as the university will borrow the money and it is not a Crown corporation. Next in line are the engineering, education and justice and student services buildings. “The engineering building has to proceed without delay and the others should proceed before too long thereafter,” he says. “We would like to begin working on the engineer- ing building next month.” The UOIT does plan to seek capital fund- ing from the Province once the new ministry of public infrastructure announces capital programs. The ministry took over the role once filled by SuperBuild. “We’re going to line up at the queue like everyone else, but we don’t expect to get spe- cial treatment,” Mr. Polonsky says. L ast month, Kevin Costante, the MTCU’s deputy minister, in an unusual move re- leased a letter to Mr. Polonsky stating the Province “continues to be committed to the success of the UOIT.” It followed media speculation that the Lib- erals would not sign off on the loan plan. He has also won three times for Best News Story. In honour of Mr. Shaw, the Ontario Community Newspa- per Association announced Tuesday that effective next year, the Reporter of the Year award will be renamed ‘The Stephen Shaw Reporter of the Year Award.’ A senior member of the news team, Mr. Shaw joined the Metroland Durham Re- gion Media Group (This Week, the News Advertiser, Uxbridge Times-Journal and The Cana- dian Statesman) in 1995. Over the last nine years, he estab- lished himself as an outstand- ing crime reporter in Durham Region and across Ontario. His investigative reporting in- cluded an exposé of a 50-year- old unsolved murder in Os- hawa, an in-depth look at a no- torious child-abuse case in Blackstock and the release into the community of a killer once determined to be insane. “We have lost a tremendous friend and colleague,” said ed- itor-in-chief Joanne Burghardt. “Stephen was among the most professional, tenacious and talented journalists it has been my good fortune to have worked with. A leader in the newsroom, his dedication to the profession and the quality of his work is to be admired. Stephen’s work made a differ- ence in Durham Region and he has left his mark on the community. He will be greatly missed.” “We are all so very proud of Stephen and his high calibre of work. His many awards are a tribute to his professionalism and dedication to the craft. He will be greatly missed,” said Metroland president Murray Skinner. Mr. Shaw was laid to rest in an emotional funeral service yesterday, and family, friends, colleagues and dozens of those touched by Mr. Shaw’s work in Metroland’s Durham Region Division paid their last re- spects at a North York funeral home. The service at Ben- jamin’s Park Memorial Chapel, led by Rabbi Aaron Flanzraich, was quiet and dig- nified. “We turn our hearts and our minds to answers but on days such as today we realize there are no answers,” said Rabbi Flanzraich. “(Stephen was) a young father of two children, a loving and devoted son and brother, a determined, ethical, honest, driven reporter.” Mr. Shaw ensured he set aside time to spend with his wife, May, and children Justin, eight, and Sydney, four. “Stephen consciously bal- anced work and family in an exemplary fashion,” said Ms. Burghardt, who delivered the eulogy at Tuesday’s funeral service. CLOSE DATE SATURDAY,MARCH 27T H Keeping an eye on the news News Advertiser ..Read by more people in your community than any other newspaper Metroland Durham Region Media Group Durham Region is better for reporter’s work The day Stephen Shaw walked into the office, I won- dered what this young, skinny, bespectacled scribe would bring to the newspaper. Stephen died Saturday night without warning and the question now is how we will get along without him. When Stephen joined us eight years ago, he was only a year out of journalism school and had just finished a one- year stint at the Haliburton County Echo. The Echo proved a tremendous training ground where the staff is small, the newspaper mighty, and in Stephen’s words, ‘If it moves, you write about it’. But the woodsy lifestyle of Haliburton wasn’t ideal for the kid from Toronto so he and wife May soon found them- selves looking south. We’re happy they looked at us. A slight, unassuming guy, Stephen quickly established himself as a dedicated, tena- cious reporter whose organiza- tion and attention to detail were a perfect match for the challenging task of crime re- porting. Accuracy counts, but in court it can be mean the dif- ference between covering the story and becoming the story. Any journalist who has inad- vertently breached a publica- tion ban can tell you it’s no fun to throw yourself at the mercy of an outraged Crown attorney or furious judge. A reporter is only as good as his contacts in the community, and Stephen Shaw was the best. Whether he was covering a breaking news story, re- searching a 50-year-old mur- der, or following a contentious issue within the justice system, he knew what buttons to push to f ind the information. And if he didn’t, he knew the person who would. The news ‘bug’ can’t be taught: either you have it or you don’t. Whether he was scheduled to work or not, day- time or night time, if there was a breaking story we never had to wonder if there was some- one on it - we had Stephen. He never needed an invitation; his high standards and drive to be the best were all that were re- quired to get him moving on a story. And move he did. A story about the arrest of local graffi- ti artists and the ensuing in- vestigation sent Steve to the podium in 2000 when he cap- tured third place honours for ‘Best News Story’ at the On- tario Community Newspapers Association (OCNA) awards. In 2001, he was named OCNA’s ‘Reporter of the Year’ for a number of stories that weren’t on anyone’s public agenda, in- cluding tracking down the daughter of a murdered woman and exploring why the insane killer was released into the community. The judge said it best: “Shaw has an instinct for justice, and the compulsion to uncover the disturbing implications.” That same year he was awarded first place for ‘Best News Story’ after investigating the case of a 50-year-old mur- der in Oshawa. The judge’s comments: “It’s impossible to look at this lengthy piece and not be aware of the legwork be- hind the words, but the writer’s gift for story telling en- sures that the wealth of detail never becomes a burden to the reader.” In 2002 he was awarded ‘Best News Story’ by the Cana- dian Community Newspaper Association for a series of sto- ries on the criminal investiga- tion of an ex-Crown attorney. How cruel a twist of fate that on the day he died, Stephen Shaw had once again been named OCNA ‘Reporter of the Year’, as well as winning ‘Best Investigative News Story’ for an investigation that brought the 2001 Reporter of the Year story full circle; a feature de- tailing the newspaper’s two- year court battle to expose the system that set an insane killer free. We will truly miss you, Stephen. Voices in the community “Our newspaper has lost an outstanding journalist who covered the crime beat second to none. And our editorial staff has lost a colleague and a friend. Stephen will be missed.” Tim Whittaker, publisher Metroland Durham Region Media Group “He did our industry proud in his commitment to his calling as a journalist who wasn’t afraid to tell the truth.” Ron Wassink, past-president OCNA “Stephen was a great journal- ist. He was intelligent, patient and dedicated to finding the truth, and to writing it well. He was a quiet observer - empathetic, respectful. Sources trusted him. Editors trust- ed him. We all knew that, when he was ready to run with it, the story was right and it was fair.” Terri Arnott, journalism co-ordinator, Humber College “In the past four years, Stephen established himself as one of the most celebrated community journalists in the country, having won five major awards in Ontario Community Newspapers Associa- tion competitions involving over 265 newspapers.” Don Lamont, executive director OCNA “I have admired his work for several years, ever since I became aware of his fine reporting as judge of the OCNA Reporter of the Year award the first time he won it... To lose a journalist like him is devastating enough; to lose a de- voted husband and father to two young children is painful beyond words.” Journalist John Miller “Whether we agreed or dis- agreed on a topic, Steve was al- ways the professional journalist and stuck to his written word.” Ron Rollauer, Staff Sergeant Durham Regional Police (retired) “He was eminently fair, consci- entious and ethical.” Alex Sosna, lawyer Joanne Burghardt e d i t o r -i n -c h i e f St ephen left a tremendous mark Reporting award renamed in Shaw’s honour ✦ Reporting from page 1 But police job campaign still on despite board, union meeting By Keith Gilligan Staff Writer DURHAM –The job action taken by the Durham Regional Police Association continues, despite a meeting the orga- nization had Monday with the police services board. The work-to-rule campaign began Feb. 27, with front-line officers not per- forming duties such as traffic ticket en- forcement, to protest disciplinary mea- sures taken by the department’s senior staff, says association head Doug Ca- vanaugh. The meeting on Monday was a chance for the association to present its side of the situation to the board, Mr. Cavanaugh noted. “I thought the meeting went well,” Mr. Cavanaugh said. “There were a number of issues and we left a lot of in- formation.” There’s no time frame for when the board will meet again with the associa- tion, he added. Mark Holland, a Pickering Regional Councillor and a board member, also said the meeting went well. For the board, the hope is to “bridge the gap” between the rank and file members and senior staff, he said. “They brought a lot of issues and a lot came down to communication. We want to look at the root causes. At first blush, there’re some communication is- sues,” Mr. Holland said. “The issues could be solved if both sides sat down.” For the association, the disciplinary measures taken against three members of the drug squad was the “straw that broke the camel’s back. They were sus- pended without any charges laid,” Mr. Cavanaugh said. “We don’t believe there was any reason for it. The issue is mismanagement. They were suspend- ed for no reason.” The three officers could have been given other duties rather than being suspended, he noted, adding the asso- ciation wants the suspensions to be re- voked right away. Mr. Cavanaugh characterized the meeting as a “fact-finding” one for the board, saying it was the first time the association has met with the board. “We think some of these issues should be a concern to them. We’ll wait for a response. They have to investigate it and come with some type of re- sponse,” he said. “We just hope to get something back from them in a timely fashion.” Mr. Holland said the board will also be meeting with senior staff in the near future. “We want to ask questions of staff. The next step is a meeting and hopefully they’ll move out of the job ac- tion and communicate. Nothing is un- solvable.” The board will also be meeting with the chief, who is on vacation in Florida, and his deputies in the near future. “We want to get their side,” Mr. Hol- land said. “In what I’m hearing so far, there just isn’t enough communication back and forth. There’s a lot of misun- derstanding.”year,” Ms. Coulter said. She wasn’t sure of exactly why the numbers have increased, but specu- lated the cold winter may have put a strain on people’s resources, forcing them to rely on other avenues to get by. In addition to more food going out, Ms. Coulter said less is coming in. Editorials &Opinions WEDNESDAY, MARCH 10, 2004 ✦ News Advertiser ✦ DAVID STELL, NEWS EDITOR, 905-683-5110 EXT. 249 Editorial Concert a bonding night for young and old alike My wife and I took our boys to see some bare- naked ladies the other night. And no, this was not some weird Freudian, hands-on attempt at sexual education; it was a rock concert featuring the band The Barenaked Ladies. This was the boys first experi- ence at a real, blow your ears off, indoor concert. And although it was not sexual at all, it was an education, for them and us. I never went to a concert with my parents. Probably a good thing when you consider that, given my dad's musical predilec- tions, it would've been either the Abbey Tavern Singers or the Kingston Trio. My Dad would've gone to see Cher if she did a cover version of Blood on the Saddle. The only album‚ of my dad's that I ever really got inter- ested in was Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass‚ and that was only because of the half-naked babe covered in whipped cream on the cover. My brothers and I played that album a lot. So it seemed a little weird fil- ing into the ACC with my kids in tow, w ondering what the night would hold for us. This was new ground. But as we soon discovered it was pleasant ground. It's quite wonderful when you discover things that bridge the gap be- tween you and your offspring. I think we're a lucky and unique generation in that regard. Our parents had to bear the full shock of the arrival of rock and roll. Nowadays we all speak it quite fluently. In fact, my kids have re-discovered the Beatles and the Doors and the like in a way that I completely missed growing up. It's quite remark- able. And so it was that the boys did not appear in the least phased when Mom and Dad stood up and hooted and hollered when the band came on, or when we sang out loud or stomped our feet in time. They took an easy cue from us and joined right in. There were, of course, one or two awkward mo- ments. The evening, as I have men- tioned, was after all, somewhat educational. The first came when the teenaged girl sitting beside my wife leaned over to talk to a friend a couple of seats over and revealed the better part of her buttocks and thong to my eldest son and I. This was not a horrific moment really, in fact, were it not for the presence and disapproving frown of my wife, it might actually have been a fairly special moment of father and son bonding. The second and potentially more jarring event occurred three quarters of the way through the evening when the f irst of several overpowering waves of acrid marijuana smoke slowly wafted over us. All four of our noses immedi- ately wrinkled up. Suzanne and I feigned dramatic parental dis- g ust and inhaled deeply in shocked horror while the boys waved their hands in front of their faces, fanning away the odor. Then, God bless them, they uttered the three most beautiful words their parents ever heard them say: "What is that?" Sunderland resident Neil Crone, actor-comic-writer, saves some of his best lines for his columns. Letters to the Editor Good clean, Barenaked fun Devaluing certain families is not fair To the editor: Re: 'Family unit must contain male and female parents,' letter to the editor, March 7. Perhaps Andy O'Connor can refresh my memory - when was it in the history of mankind that we swung from branch to branch and lived among the trees? I do recall the 'Neanderthal' cavemen whose feet were firmly planted on the ground, but let's hope he's not suggesting that we live by caveman standards. There are many variations of families in this day and age, and there is no evidence to sug- gest one family type has creat- ed more 'confused identity' chil- dren than others. Each parent, regardless of their gender or marital status, has negative and positive as- pects. It's part of being human. For the most part every human being offers something special to their children and that is what people should be focusing upon. Gender doesn't deter- mine whether you are a decent human being, or a good parent, and it certainly doesn't guaran- tee that every man, and every woman involved in a marriage represents a perfect example of their gender or heterosexual values. 'Confused identity' children as Mr. O'Connor put them, come from all walks of life. Even heterosexual families have cre- ated their equal share. As long as we're talking ancestry, it's fair to assume that most homo- sexuals come from heterosexu- al families so could it not be said that the male/female fami- ly units create confused identi- ties? The bottom line is, we live in a multicultural society where difference should be embraced not criticized. Not only is indi- viduality a part of human her- itage, it is part of the human experience and to devalue a family because it does not have one male and one female, is un- fair. Kelly Honsberger Pickering Agricultural preserve fight seems to go on in perpetuity To the editor: Re: 'Consultant's report makes sense,' Danielle Milley column, March 5. Ms. Milley states that 'the southern part of the preserve may contain prime farmland, but it is difficult to farm be- cause it is divided into small parcels, has hydro corridors through it, and a number of major roads breaking it up.' I am assuming from this state- ment that she has personally farmed these lands and has come to this conclusion from her experience behind the wheel of a plow. If this is the case, then the farmers that continue to work this land would benefit greatly from her input and her reason- ing that 'it makes sense to de- velop it.' She continues to reason that because it is adjacent to the ex- isting urban area, it therefore makes these lands easier to ser- vice and allows for a natural progression of growth. So from this line of thinking, it would only seem to follow that the northern part of the agricultur- al preserve would then be adja- cent to the existing urban area and... well, I think you get my point. And since the Golden Horse- shoe greenbelt has not been 'set in stone yet,' perhaps the faster this can be done, the better. After all, we have a model of 'natural progression of growth' to follow when we look no fur- ther than York Region to the north. It seems to many of us that the promise of the statement 'in perpetuity' as it applies to the agricultural lands of Pickering, really just means that the fight for the lands will go on... in per- petuity. Province should step in to make system fair Municipal politician severances need to be made consistent Oh, wouldn't it be nice if Durham Region could trade places with Halton Region. The two share an area code, but when it comes to the severance packages approved by their respective re- gional and local councils, they have almost nothing in common. The four municipalities in Halton - Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Halton Hills - have no severance packages for municipal politicians. Nor does Halton Region. That means once you decide to quit politics or are defeated, no payout for services rendered is delivered in Halton. On the other hand, Durham Region's politicians are richly rewarded for their time in office once they leave - un- less they serve in Scugog Township. Scugog is the lone municipality among Durham's eight where councillors don't get a fat cheque within months of quitting/losing. Scugog politicians do qualify for a regional severance pay- out, however. A voter has a right to ask: Why is there such a vast dis- crepancy between one region and another within the Greater Toronto Area? Why is there no consistency? Why do citizens in Halton get a huge financial break, whereas citizens in Durham (other than Scugog) don't? That's where the provincial government, through the Ministry of Municipal Affairs, should step in to level the playing field. Severance, after all, adds up to millions of dollars over a long period of time. That's tax money that could be spent on any number of projects in the region. The purpose of involving the Province isn't even to nec- essarily remove severance packages. The idea would be to make the system fair and to take the setting of severance and, for that matter, pay increases, out of the hands of councillors who are in an obvious conflict-of-interest situ- ation. The ministry could set up a committee that would decide on fair rates of pay, severance and pension across Ontario, and then come up with a formula - perhaps one that's tied to the rate of inflation - which would cover in- creases. The Province already sets salaries for school board trustees, who face election at the same time as local and reg ional councillors. Why could it not do the same thing for councillors and mayors? The process would avoid the prospect of citizens look- ing on helplessly, as we all did recently in Durham, while our councillors jack up salaries and severance. And it would avoid putting councillors in the position of voting for or against severance and then picking up the cash any- way. A single system that promises a fair deal for all is what we need. Children can start fire setting at any age and it is often a progressive behaviour. This means that fire play can quickly progress into fire setting. The Arson Prevention Program for Children helps families deal with children who may be involved in fire play or fire setting. The aim of TAPP-C is to promote fire safety among children and youths. Warning Signs • Your child likes to play with matches and lighters and uses them like toys. • You have concerns about your child’s behaviour and their fascination with fire. • You have found burned items/toys in or around your house and garage, or on your child’s body. • Fire materials, such as lighters or gasoline, are easily accessible or go missing. • You have caught your child playing with fire or fire materials. Contact the Pickering Fire Services at 905.420.4628, email fire@city.pickering.on.ca or visit cityofpickering.com under Emergency Services for more information about the TAPP-C Program. World champ again Inside or outside, Felicien's the best By Al Rivett Sports Editor PICKERING —Pickering's Perdita Felicien was determined to prove at the World Indoor Track and Field Championships that her world outdoor hurdles crown was no fluke. Mission accomplished. In her first season outside of col- legiate athletics, the 23-year-old hurdler became the first Canadian woman to win a gold medal at the indoor worlds. In a spirited show- down with American hurdling and sprinting legend Gail Devers, Feli- cien chalked up her second world title in seven months when she won the 60-metre hurdles in Budapest, Hungary on Sunday. Although beaten by Devers this season at the Millrose Games in New York City and the U.S. Golden Spike Invitational Indoor Meet at the University of Arkansas, Feli- cien was nonplussed by the prospect of hooking up with her again at the worlds. "It is to the point now that I keep calm (before a race)," said Felicien in an interview prior the worlds. "I'm as good as anyone there and I truly believe in that. I have no more fear and I'm not intimidated by anyone." In a tight final, Felicien won in 7.75 seconds, edging out the favoured Devers by .03 of a second. The time represented both a Cana- dian and a meet record. It was only the second time a Canadian athlete has won the event at the world indoor champi- onships. Bruny Surin won the 60m hurdles title in 1995. Heading into the worlds, Felicien was looking forward to the chance of competing against the top hur- dlers on the planet. And, she felt no extra pressure to duplicate her gold-medal performance at the world outdoor championships in Paris last August. "I've always been itching to go to my first world indoors," she said. "I'm going in fresh and excited and wanting to prove myself again." Now, with two world gold medals under her belt and being the pro- hibitive favourite for Olympic gold in the 100m hurdles in Athens this summer, Felicien says she wel- comes the pressure in the lead up to the Games. "To be the number-one hurdler going into the Olympics is unbe- lievable. I would never have be- lieved this is where I'd be. Four years ago as a 19-year-old, I was just happy to be there. This is com- pletely new to me; my cover's com- pletely blown now. Basically, I'll be using every meet to prepare for it. "I'm going there knowing I can win and I'm going to do my best to make sure that I do." The 60m hurdles final was the icing on the cake for what was an- other outstanding performance at the worlds. Felicien won her open- ing heat on Sunday morning with a time of 7.91 seconds, ending up the third-fastest qualifier behind Dev- ers and Lacena Golding Clarke of Jamaica. She followed that perfor- mance by breaking the Canadian record in her semifinal heat with a winning time of 7.83. The championship also came with a $40,000 payday for Felicien. She picked up $60,000 for winning the world outdoor hurdles title. PERDITA FELICIEN World indoor hurdles champion. Monarchs go for hoops gold St. Mary hopes low seed proves fruitful at provincial championships By Al Rivett Sports Editor PICKERING — The St. Mary Mon- archs are loose and ready to make a statement at the provincial high school senior boys' basketball showcase in Guelph beginning today. But, coach Mike Gordensky notes his Monarchs -- seeded 14th out of 18 teams -- face an uphill bat- tle at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) 'AAAA' basketball cham- pionships. "Yeah, we're ready to go," says Gordensky. "We've got a couple of bumps and bruises, but nothing se- rious. We're really excited. We don't have any experience, but we'll get our feet wet and see what we can do." Right off the bat, the Lake On- tario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) champion Monarchs (33- 9 overall) meet the eighth-seeded C.W. Jeffreys Collegiate Institute Saints of North York in first-round action today (Wednesday) at Guelph's Centennial CVI at 7:15 p.m. If St. Mary wins, it faces the winner of 10th seeded St. Anne Sec- ondary School Saints from Tecum- seh or number-nine Notre Dame Secondary School Knights from Brampton. If St. Mary loses, it plays the winner of the game be- tween number-three seeded Cathe- dral High School Gaels of Hamilton and 18th-seeded Innisdale Sec- ondary School Invaders of Barrie. Gordensky notes Jeffreys repre- sents a stiff test, as they play in the To ronto District Secondary School Association (TDSSA), arguably the toughest conference in Ontario. The Saints were one of two TDSSA teams to receive an OFSAA berth; the other team being the top-seed- ed Eastern Commerce Saints of Toronto. Although he doesn't know too much about the Saints, Gorden- sky's certain of one thing: His Mon- archs will have to shoot the ball for a better percentage than they did in the LOSSA championship game last week in order to have any chance against the Toronto squad. In that game, St. Mary got past city rival Pine Ridge Secondary School Pumas 44-37 despite a poor shooting percentage, especially at the free-throw stripe where the club missed more than 10 attempts. Gordensky says he wasn't shocked with his team's seeding. "I figured we would be seeded anywhere from 10th to 12th, so they weren't too far off. We haven't beat- en anybody in the top 10 this year, so I can't complain about (the seed- ing)," he says. This year represents the Mon- archs' first trip back to the OFSAA championships in two years. Last season, the Pickering High School Trojans defeated the Monarchs in the LOSSA final. NOTES:The seedings for the 2004 OFSAA championships are: 1. Toronto Eastern Commerce Saints; 2. Scarborough Mother Teresa Ti- tans; 3. Hamilton Cathedral Gaels; 4. Toronto Father Henry Carr Cru- saders; 5. Kingston Frontenac Fal- cons; 6. Mississauga Father Henry Goetz Gators; 7. Kitchener G & VS Raiders; 8. North York CW Jeffreys Saints; 9. Brampton Notre Dame Knights; 10. Tecumseh St. Anne Saints; 11. Waterloo C.I. Vikings; 12. St. Catharines Governor Simcoe Redcoats; 13. Ottawa St. Patrick's The Irish; 14. Pickering St. Mary Monarchs; 15. Markham District High School Marauders; 16. Thorn- hill Vaughan Secondary School Voyageurs; 17. London South Sec- ondary School Lions; 18. Barrie In- nisdale Secondary School Invaders. Raiders midgets dropped from provincial hunt AJAX —The Ajax-Pickering minor midget Raiders provincial championship playoff drive ended at the hands of the top ranked team in Ontario, the Rich- mond Hill Stars. The Raiders put up a strong battle, but in the end it wasn't enough as the injury-plagued roster came up short in three games. Raiders' goalies, David Blair and Ryan Daniels, played extreme- ly well in each of the losses. Final scores were not reported. The Raiders are now relegated to the ETA league championships where they are hopeful for a second consecu- tive title. The Raiders had a very successful season, finishing in third place with a record of 15 wins, 8 losses and 9 ties. This is the last year for many of the boys in their minor hockey careers as they work towards scholarship oppor- tunities from universities and possibly being drafted in the OHL. Team players are Ryan Daniels, David Blair, assistant captain Kyle van de Bospoort, Jason Dale, Greg Riggs, Cody Pollard, Stephen Boyle, Daniel Tr emblay, Robert Bentley, captain An- drew Wilkins, assistant captain Kyle Neadles, Nathanial Underhill, Kyle Speers, Travis Livingstone, Michael An- derson, assistant captain Chris Chap- pell, and Chris Dixon. The team is coached by Tom Riggs, Rick Lantz, Rick Lantz Jr., Doug Daniels and managed by Richard Wilkins. Tw o more wins for Raiders as atoms wrap up top spot DURHAM —The Raiders are on a roll heading into the playoffs. The Ajax/Pickering Dr. Jay Petroff/Firstbrook Pointon Insurance minor atom AAA club finished the regu- lar season with impressive wins over Richmond Hill (10-0) and York Simcoe (6-1). The team's regular season record was a sterling 26-2-2, earning it a first- place finish both in the Western Division and in the entire Eastern AAA league. A goals-against average of less than two per game testifies to a solid team de- fensive effort. The Raiders face off against the Markham Waxers in first round of play- off action. The team's roster is Cooper Gib- bins, Timmy Ernst, Daniel Renouf, Wil Pointon, Tyler Roche, Mitch Beetam, Phillip Fullerton, Joe Vocino, Jeffrey Heard, Drake Cagguila, Daryl Snelling, Zachary Johnston, Devin Shore, Josh Fa gan and Derek Sheppard. Sal Cagguila coaches the Raiders, assisted by Glenn Ernst and Dave Snelling. The trainer is Len Fagan and Maryann Gibbins manages the team. Teammate Evan Tsiopoulas registered a time of 2:08.32 in the juve- nile boys' 800m, his time the second fastest among ninth graders in the province. The Trojans track team also ran at the annual Adams Invitational meet at York University on Friday, March 5. Leading the team was senior Ryan Gor- don with a meet record of 8.32 sec- onds in the 60m hurdles. Teammates Tedroy Gomes placed third and Joshua Perreira was fifth. The 15-year-old earned the high points' male athlete trophy for the 14-15 age group at the meet, held at the Etobicoke Olympium Pool. The Scarborough Swim Club member made it to the podium six times, achieving gold medals in the 1,500-metre freestyle, 100m backstroke, 200m back and 400m individual medley. As well, Langlois had outstanding swims in the 200m and 400m freestyle events, checking out with silver medals and personal best times in both.
