AJAX –A last minute govern-
ment-funding announcement
means Rouge Valley Health
System won’t end the year in
the red for the first time in
three years.
This week, Ontario Minister
of Health George Smitherman
announced $385 million in ad-
ditional funding to hospitals
for 2003/04; of that, Rouge Val-
ley receives $3.9 million.
“That money, as I under-
stand, is to offset our current
03/04 deficit and it should be
enough to make sure we are in
a break-even or surplus situa-
tion for this year,” said Hume
Mar tin, president and chief ex-
ecutive officer at Rouge Valley.
“It’s not targeted at anything
other than making sure we
aren’t in a deficit situation.”
The current fiscal year for
hospitals ends March 31.
“That was the exact
amount we’ve told the min-
istry over the past six
months that we thought we’d
be in a deficit,” he said. “It is

DURHAM –The Durham Region-
al Police Association has told of-
ficers to stop performing duties
such as issuing traffic tickets as
part of job action to protest an
“arcane” management regime led
by Chief Kevin McAlpine.
Simmering anger and sinking
morale among rank-and-file offi-
cers boiled over at an association
meeting Wednesday that drew an
“unprecedented number of mem-
bers,” said Police Association
president Doug Cavanaugh.
“They’re angry and they’ve
had enough,” said Mr. Ca-
vanaugh, adding 363 of the asso-
ciation’s 1,000-plus uniform and
civilian members showed up.
He said morale has plummet-
ed to a new low as a result of de-
teriorating labour relations, un-
fair and heavy-handed discipli-
nary methods and an ongoing,
year-long OPP probe into alleged
misconduct by ex-members of
the drug unit.
The suspensions two weeks
ago of three former drug squad
officers for refusing to give inter-
views to OPP investigators was
“the final straw,” he said.
The DRPA bulletin mailed out
Friday states: “all members are
to exercise their discretion” with
respect to enforcement, such as
traffic violations and other
provincial offences, to claim any
overtime or missed lunches, and
to not complete some of their du-
ties, such as paperwork.
“All members are expected to
continue to act in a professional
manner and to perform their du-
ties arising from a request for as-
sistance from the public,” says
the bulletin.

Mediator will
meet with both
sides as Wednesday
deadline looms
By Mike Ruta
Staff Writer
DURHAM – Make-or-break talks
starting tomorrow between fac-
ulty at Ontario colleges and
management will determine if
roughly 300 Durham College
staff members go on strike
Wednesday morning.
But if an agreement is
reached in the wee hours, it
might not call off the walkout,
said Ted Montgomery, chair-
man of the faculty bargaining
team.
“If a deal is reached too late
on Tuesday, as things stand
now, the default position is to
strike,” the Seneca College
teacher said Friday. “Unless we
inform the faculty otherwise,
we will be on strike Wednesday
morning.”
The Ontario Public Service
Employees’ Union (OPSEU)
represents roughly 8,600 mem-
bers at the province’s 24 com-
munity colleges.
The bargaining team is at-
tempting to reach a new collec-
tive agreement with manage-
ment, represented by the Col-
lege Compensation and Ap-
pointments Council. The par-
ties are stuck on the issues of
salary and workload.
In a vote last week, 83 per
cent of Durham College mem-
bers gave their bargaining team
a strike mandate, higher than
the 75 per cent provincewide
figure.
A provincially appointed me-
diator is to meet with the two
sides Monday and Tuesday in
Tor onto. Mr. Montgomery says
he is expecting a new and im-
proved offer from management,
and that the mediator will re-
quest a communications black-
out during the last-ditch effort
to avoid a walkout.
Bev Balenko, Durham Col-
lege’s chief operating officer,
has said a strike would shut
down the full-time, college day
program, but that university
classes would continue.
That could make for some
tension on the picket lines that
Peter McKeracher, president of
OPSEU Local 354 at Durham
College, says would be set up at
all campus entrances. He says
students would face delays
crossing the lines.
OPSEU president Leah Cassel-
man on Thursday urged all col-
lege faculty to respect picket
lines if there is a strike, even if it
doesn’t directly affect them.
Meeting that request would
shut down all college classes.
“The colleges employ a large
number of part-time and ses-
sional people who are not part
of our bargaining unit,” she
stated.
“If you are one of those peo-
ple, I ask you to honour the
picket lines at the colleges and
not go in to teach. Another
large group of people teach in
night school programs and con-
tinuing education. On behalf of
all of OPSEU, I ask you to hon-
our the picket lines set up by
faculty.”
Durham administration says
it will keep students updated
with information on the college
Web site.
The latest bulletin states that
post-secondary and appren-
ticeship classes at all DC loca-
tions would not operate in a
strike. Continuing education
classes on the Oshawa and
Whitby campuses would be
postponed.
The DC library and Early
Learning Centre would remain
open and cafeteria services
would be available.
However the dental clinic
would not run.

a huge help and we’re very grate-
ful.”
Mr. Smitherman said this is the
last time hospitals are going to re-
ceive last-minute funding. As part
of the announcement he also said
hospitals will be required to sign
performance agreements, which
are to be developed by the gov-
ernment and hospitals.
With the agreements, hospitals
would have to agree to targets on
service delivery and patient vol-
ume in return for the level of fund-
ing they receive. If a hospital did-
n’t meet its targets, fines could be
imposed.
Mr. Martin and the Rouge Val-
ley board of directors were happy
to hear about the performance
agreements, it’s been something
they’ve been lobbying for.
“We had asked the ministry a
year and a half ago if they would
enter into a financial and services
agreement with Rouge Valley,” he
said.
“The ministry said they weren’t
in a position to do that at the time
so we were delighted when the
minister said (Tuesday) that they
would do that.”
Service agreements should pre-
vent the need for year-end adjust-
ments to bailout hospitals, Mr.
Martin said.
In addition to the $3.9 million,
Rouge Valley will also share in $50
million in funding for the hiring of
full-time nurses. Mr. Martin said
its portion is not known yet.
As of December, 53 per cent of
the hospital’s nursing staff was
full-time, which is comparable
with the 57 per cent provincewide.
Meanwhile there were 2.7 million
hours of overtime worked by
nurses and hospitals purchased
two million hours of triple-time
agency nurses.
Mr. Smitherman said nurses
are the heart of the health-care
system and he doesn’t want to see
that resource squandered.
Mr. Martin said it will be a chal-
lenge for the hospital to increase
the number of full-time nurses,
but it is something officials are
going to work hard to accomplish.
Rouge Valley likes performance target idea

Put your wheels to use
DURHAM –Community Care
Durham is looking for some new
wheels.
Volunteers are needed for the
Meals on Wheels program, which
rolls Monday to Friday between
11 :30 a.m. and 1 p.m. in both Ajax
and Pickering.
Volunteers are required to de-
liver or pack meals one day a
week for approximately an hour.
For more information on deliv-
ering Meals on Wheels and volun-
teering with Community Care
Durham, call Joan Hunt at 905-
837-0017 ext. 221.
Mr. Cavanaugh said pub-
lic safety won’t be jeopar-
dized. “Some officers have
individually already begun
exercising their discretion,
which they are lawfully en-
titled to do. Some have
stopped issuing tickets,” he
said Friday.
Chief McAlpine is vaca-
tioning in Florida and
couldn’t be reached.
Deputy Chief Chuck
Mercier was “taken aback”
by the sudden action and
promised to meet with
DRPA leaders as soon as
possible to “clear the air.”
In an interview he said
he has “full confidence offi-
cers will continue to do
their jobs in a professional
manner,” in spite of the job
action.
Association executives
presented the motion, in-
cluding a list of demands,
to police brass and the
Durham Regional Police
Services Board Friday.
The motion calls on
Chief McAlpine and board
members to publicly “show
its support for all mem-
bers,” including the former
drug officers being investi-
gated by OPP.
The association also
wants the chief and the
board to address concerns
over a Risk Management
Policy that “treats the em-
ployees of the Durham Re-
gional Police Service as a li-
ability,” according to the
motion.
“Unless these issues are
resolved, all members are
to exercise their discretion
while performing their du-
ties that do not directly
arise from a request for as-
sistance from the public,” it
states.
Doug Moffatt, chairman
of the police board, said the
risk-management policy
protects officers, ensuring
they have legal counsel if
they are ever charged with
a criminal offence in rela-
tion to their duties.
“I don’t understand
where they’re coming
from,” said Mr. Moffatt.
“This really is opera-
tional stuff and we (as
board members) don’t nor-
mally intervene on that,”
Mr. Moffatt said.
The association says
morale is lower than it was
a few years ago when a sur-
vey showed 80 per cent of
members had no confi-
dence in Chief McAlpine.
“Unfortunately the auto-
cratic, confrontational and
disrespectful management
regime of Chief McAlpine
has succeeded to further
damage the already low
morale. We are now at a
point of serious crisis,” says
the DRPA.

Whether you are looking for remedial help for your child or an
enrichment program, Grade Expectations Learning Centre can help.
Located in Pickering, the centre has been helping students achieve success
since 1995.
Pr ior to enrolment, each student is assessed using recognized testing tools
to establish skill levels and areas of need. The assessment is an interactive
one-on-one process with an Ontario Certified teacher. This allows a
trained professional to observe the student while performing the test and
pinpoint which skill areas in math or language are lacking. The importance
of this is relevant as some students are simply not comfortable in testing
situations. The results of the assessment are reviewed with the parent and
an individualised program is designed for the student.
Students who attend Grade Expectations spend a full two hours per week
with their instructor. The time is spent on instructing the student from the
personalized program, as well as assisting them in their school work. This
homework support has become increasingly important in the years since
the new Ontario curriculum has been implemented. If students are
struggling with a concept presented to them in school, they are encouraged
to bring the work to Grade Expectations for assistance. With a maximum
of three students in a class, teachers offer the individual instruction and
attention that often cannot be supplied by a classroom teacher. The small
classroom setting (not an open-concept setting) allows for a quiet place
where students can focus on their work.
Fo r more information on how to enrol your child in the
Grade Expectations program, please call 905-420-9930.

Education
deserves
some support
Investment in colleges makes
business sense
O ntario's colleges are making a case for improved
funding with the Ontario government.
One might assume the message is an easy sell to a
government elected largely on a pro-education ticket. But it
has been made clear in recent weeks that an election
promise is only good for the length of time it takes to get
nicely settled in the big office. After the first 100 days, all
bets are off and the promise takes on chameleon character-
istics, bending and twisting to suit the everyday reality of
running Ontario on a budget.
Mary Anne Chambers, minister of training, colleges and
universities, is an admitted novice when it comes to the col-
lege system, and a newbie to political office. She has been
getting an earful from the college sector which says it is
under-funded and in dire need of a cash infusion.
Ms. Chambers has her work cut out for her. ACAATO is
asking the Province for a multi-year investment program
that would see per-student operating funds rise from the
current $4,630 to $6,300. Ontario colleges say grant and tu-
ition funding per student has dropped over 40 per cent since
19 87-88, adjusted for inflation. In addition, Ontario colleges
rank last in revenue per student when compared to other
provinces, receiving 70 per cent of the national average.
We 're all doing more with less, say critics; so too are the
colleges, counters ACAATO.
According to the Association, Ontario's colleges have fo-
cused on improving productivity in order to continue deliv-
ering top-notch programming despite dwindling dollars.
Faced with a 43 per cent increase in student enrolment and
a 23 per cent decrease in full-time faculty since 1986-87, the
colleges are crying "Uncle."
Ontario is the economic engine that drives this country.
Ontario business and industry relies heavily on the college
system to deliver specialized training and education to its
workforce.
The Province will lose market opportunities if specialized
programs in areas such as manufacturing, networking and
information technology are not available.
It makes good business sense to invest in education.
Public transportation in Ajax
and Pickering is pretty con-
venient right now. That is,
unless you are trying to get here by
connecting from another bus sys-
tem in the region.
A reporter with our newspaper
group, Carly Foster, recently tested
the system and proved that fact.
When she reached the Whitby-Ajax
border, coming from Oshawa
through to Whitby, trying to con-
nect with the Ajax-Pickering sys-
tem, local transit failed. A trip on a
GO bus was needed to cross the
border.
It doesn't make sense. It's need-
lessly complicated. And Durham
residents deserve better.
So regionwide transit makes
sense in principle. Heck, if coun-
tries in North America can reach a
deal on free trade, why can't like-
minded municipalities get togeth-
er on a transit system?
That said, however, why go so
fast? Slow down. It took months of
consultations and over a year of
lead-time before the Region would
implement a strict smoking bylaw.
But, when it comes to transit, little
to no consultation seems to be nec-
essary for most regional politi-
cians.
Now July 1 is the date for the
amalgamation and with much sup-
port for it at Durham council, it
looks like a done deal. In essence
they're ready to throw all the bus
systems together and sort out the
pieces later.
The issue came up for debate
this week in Ajax and Pickering
when the board of trade brought
mayors Dave Ryan of Pickering
and Ajax's Steve Parish together.
The topic inevitably had to come
up as both mayors gave a speech to
business leaders. And in scoring
the battle, Mayor Parish earned
enough points that he could have
been declared the unofficial win-
ner.
It wasn't a knockout, but he
made a point that had to hit home
for the business people in the
room: "The Region took it without
any staff report or business case,"
Mayor Parish said.
Mayor Ryan, a staunch support-
er of the plan, made some excellent
points himself, though. It would be
nice to have a user-friendly bus
system as he called it. But, he
weakened his argument when he
said it's an aggressive plan. This is
just the kind of issue they don't
need to be aggressive with.
So, regional politicians, it's not
too late. Work towards a new sys-
tem for transit in Durham, but do
it at a reasonable pace. The Region
has some smart cookies working in
the offices, with the brains to ana-
lyze and work out a proper plan.
With a proper plan, it will work out
better in the end.

Pet bylaw one
to be proud of
To the editor:
Recent developments at Pickering
council have shown our councillors and
the mayor are keeping a vigilant watch
over the welfare of our beloved pets.
With the new City bylaw and its impact
on pet stores across the city, residents
can breathe a little easier when it comes
to the purchasing of pets.
Much too often letters of negativity are
generously distributed in regards to what
our elected officials are not doing. Well,
here is a case of solid proactive action
that should make all citizens of Pickering
proud. According to animal rights offi-
cials, this legislation is the best in On-
tario, if not Canada.
Congratulations to Councillor Bill
McLean and Mayor Dave Ryan and all of
the members of council for the positive
action in keeping our pets in a safe envi-
ronment.

No good reason
for severances
To the editor:
Re: 'Retiring life pays,' Feb. 20.
Who among us is not surprised to read
that yet again former politicians who vol-
untarily decide to vacate their positions
are entitled to severance?
What possible reason, or reasons,
could there be for extending this practice
in these particular situations? Where an
employer terminates the employment of
an individual through a layoff or through
wrongful dismissal, severance is most
certainly warranted.
When will our governments start act-
ing responsibly with our tax dollars in
this area?
Why am I, and most other private citi-
zens, not entitled to severance when we
voluntarily move on from our places of
employment to accept a position else-
where, yet this does not apply to our
elected officials?

Durham College
takes top honours
for marketing
DURHAM - According to a panel of
judges, Durham College created the
best general-image marketing cam-
paign of any Ontario college last year
and this year brought home provincial
honours for marketing.
Over the weekend of Feb. 21 to 22,
at the 19th annual Trillium Awards pre-
sentation in Kingston, Ont., the college
took top honours in the category of
General Image Campaign/ Successful
Marketing Strategies.
The college’s communications and
marketing department submitted a va-
riety of items related to its “A Place for
You” positioning statement, including
the viewbook, calendar, posters, Web
site, and theatre screen campaign.
According to a Durham College
news release, judges’ comments noted
the campaign used a “unique ap-
proach” and described it as “inviting,
clean and simple.” Another judge com-
mended the campaign for its “atten-
tion-getting design” and “unique im-
agery.”

ments, keeping them safe, and positive
parenting.
A nutritious meal and free child
care is available at each session, along
with a toy lending library.

If you have been wearing the same dental prosthesis
for more than five years without having it checked by
your denturist, you are running unnecessary risks. Too
many people believe that dentures are good for over 20
years. Nothing could be further from the truth!
The removable prosthesis is made of a hard, rigid
material. Your face, mouth and jaw, on the other hand,
change over the years. Because it can not adapt to these
changes and because artificial teeth wear down with
time, a prosthesis cannot do its job effectively for more
than about five years. This reality can have devastating
consequences that are often invisible and imperceptible
to the wearer of a worn-out denture.
Here is a short list of the most harmful possible effects
suffered by wearers of prothesis more than five years
old:
• softening of the tissues
• painful irritated tissues
• more labourious chewing and difficult digestion
• headaches, earaches, neck pain and joint problems
• sagging mouth, point chin and prematurely old
face
• accelerated resorption of the bone

The telltale heart
The anatomy of
cardiac arrest
By Carly Foster
Staf f Writer
DURHAM —The questions
flowing from dozens of peo-
ple who jammed the heart
doctor's free lecture proved
that residents are con-
cerned about their most
vital organ.
And they should be.
In Canada, heart disease
and stroke remain the No. 1
killers of both men and
women. Around 400
Durham residents had by-
pass surgery last year.
Dr. Rakesh Bhargava, a
renowned Oshawa cardiolo-
gist, spent more than two
and a half hours at his Os-
hawa clinic recently ex-
plaining the anatomy of a
heart attack.
"(This is) where do I not
want to meet my patients,"
he said, pointing to a photo
of a man in a hospital bed
after a heart attack. "I
would rather educate peo-
ple now and not have to
meet them."
But meet them he does,
because of nasty things
called blocked arteries.
Blocked arteries occur
when fat and cholesterol de-
posits build up in the coro-
nary artery.
When the arteries start to
clog, they slow the flow of
blood and oxygen to the
heart.
This first stage is called
angina, and is accompanied
by pain in the chest during
exertion.
A heart attack occurs
when blood clots around
the deposits and the blood
supply to the heart is se-
verely reduced or cut off.
And one of the biggest
battles Dr. Bhargava and
cardiologists everywhere
face is teaching people to
recognize a heart attack's
symptoms.
"The tendency is to think
it's heart burn, take an
antacid and hope it goes
away," he said.
Plus heart attack symp-
toms are different between
men and women. One lady
in the audience had severe
pain between her shoulder
blades, an indicator not
usually felt by men.
But unlike heartburn, a
heart attack is usually ac-
companied by tons of sweat
and nausea, along with
chest pain, tightness or
heaviness, shortness of
breath and dizziness.
Getting to the hospital is
imperative: Unless blood
flow is restored within 30
minutes to several hours,
the heart muscle is irre-
versibly damaged.
"Prompt therapy can
make the difference be-
tween heart muscle death
and heart muscle salvage,"
Dr. Bhargava said.
He outlined various treat-
ments for a heart attack, in-
cluding bypass surgery, clot
dissolving drugs, stents and
angioplasty.
Risk factors of heart dis-
ease include smoking, high
cholesterol and blood pres-
sure, stress, depression, in-
activity, obesity,
menopause, diabetes and
genetics.
"Monitor your weight,
don't smoke and check your
cholesterol," Dr. Bhargava
said. "These are things that
don't cost anything."

heart health, visit the Heart
and Stroke Foundation of

stroke.ca.

Do you sometimes wish you could
send your kid to another planet?
Why not send them to one where they
can have fun and exercise their body
and mind?
Now in its third year, Planet
Gymnastics is a recreational facility
that offers gymnastic classes where
kids can have fun, get active and work
out their minds.
“Gymnastics is an excellent sport for
developing your child’s success in
other sports and activities,” says
Shawn Campbell, Planet Gymnastics
co-owner and coach. “It also helps
with future ambitions.”
Mr. Campbell, who runs the facility
with his wife Denise, graduated from
Seneca College’s Professional
Coaching program, with a concentra-
tion on beginner and advanced gym-
nastics. He has been a professional
gymnastics coach for over 15 years
and has trained many champion ath-
letes. It was through his studies at
Seneca that he discovered the benefits
of gymnastics training for kids. It was
also when he realized his dream of
opening a recreational gymnastics
facility.
Planet Gymnastics offers a variety of
classes, seven days a week, with some-
thing for kids as young as 18 months
and programs for teens as old as 15.
The Parent and Tot program, for exam-
ple, is for kids between the ages of 18
months to three years and is a great
opportunity for you to have fun and
engage in playtime with your child in
a unique environment. This class is a
great way to improve your child’s
physical ability as well as their social
skills.
For three- to five-year-olds there is
Kinder Gymnastics, a class full of fun
activities, games and circuits that
require preliminary gymnastic skills. In
this program they will improve their
balance, strength and flexibility and
will gain their self-confidence.
The Recreational program is for kids
over the age of five and it follows the
CANGYM level system, which includes
all of the gymnastic events. As your
child successfully learns increasingly
difficult skills, they will progress
through the ranks of CANGYM. All
Planet Gymnastics instructors ensure
that the skills are learned properly
before kids progress to the next level.
For dancers, cheerleaders, and for
kids who are just full of energy, Planet
Gymnastics offers Tumble and Bounce
trampoline classes. This two-hour class
is filled with lots of energy, bouncing
and fun.
A unique feature about Planet
Gymnastics is its equipment. Their cen-
tre attraction is a three-storey play cen-
tre, with a separate ball pit and spe-
cialty training equipment for toddlers.
They also have a 40-foot tumbling
trampoline, plus equipment that is
made especially for kids as well as all
the traditional gymnastics equipment
such as uneven bars, rings, single bars
and balance beams.
Classes run throughout the year,
including a summer camp, with a spe-
cial gold medal presentation held each
June. The year is also commemorated
with class photos.
Not only is Planet Gymnastics a great
place where kids can enjoy recreation-
al gymnastics, it’s also a great setting
for birthday parties. In fact, birthday
parties are one of their specialties.
“Birthday parties have become very
popular,” says Mr. Campbell. “Often
they are booked at least three months
in advance.”
The birthday party gets the entire gym
to themselves, with access to the play
centre, and participates in a variety of
warm-ups and games that are directed
by a coach. After a fun-filled activity
session, the guests retire to the private
party room, which is stocked with all
the necessities for chowing down (i.e.
dishes, cutlery etc.). There are a vari-
ety of birthday packages to choose
from.
To learn more about Planet Gymnastics
visit them at 1755 Plummer Rd., Unit
#8, or contact them at 905-839-7669.

More than 2,000 ringette

tournaments in Ontario.
The 32nd Annual Ajax
Silver Ring Ringette
Tournament was a hit
with all involved.

Storm blow through LOSSA
PICKERING –– The J. Clarke Richardson Storm won the final of its LOSSA junior boys’ hockey final, Thursday.

team Captain Chris Eyles and goaltender Jeff Thatcher.

Pickering High
and St. Mary to
cross sticks again
By Paul Futhey
Staff Writer
PICKERING –It's an all-west-
ern final in LOSSA boys'
hockey - again.
For the second year in a
row, the Pickering High
School Trojans and St. Mary
Monarchs will face off in a
best-of-three AAA final, with
the Trojans looking to defend
their title and the Monarchs
eager to start their own reign.
The final start this week,
but the day and time had not
been determined at press
time. Pickering coach Lou
Manserra said the key against
St. Mary will be for his players
to know their individual as-
signments.
"Worry about your own job,
let the others do theirs," he
said. "They have something
they want to prove."
Pickering swept Anderson
in two straight games to reach
the final. In Monday's Game
2, Patrick Milne's goal with 1.5
seconds remaining on the
clock gave the Trojans a 6-5
win and a berth in the final.
Pickering had trailed 4-1
heading into the final period.
For Manserra, the intermis-
sion between the second and
third came in handy as it al-
lowed his team to regroup.
"If it's a quick start, you look
to maintain it," he said, noting
Anderson was playing desper-
ate hockey. "If it's a slow start,
you're looking to change
things around. We could have
easily been playing a third
game."
Anderson coach Chris Or-
danis, after watching Picker-
ing's strong transition game
pick his club apart in Game 1,
said his club's final game was
a marked improvement. Ulti-
mately, though, it wasn't good
enough.
"We almost had the wall
down," Ordanis said. "They
(the Trojans) deserve it,
though."
While the season end was
disappointing, Ordanis did
take solace in the overall sea-
son.
"We're happy," he said, refer-
ring to his own club's season.
"But we're not satisfied."
Meanwhile, the other East-
ern Division threat to make
the final, Eastdale Collegiate,
fell in three games to St. Mary,
losing the rubber match 3-1
Thursday. Eastdale coach
Josh French saw his team ran
up against a hot Monarchs
goaltender in the third game,
as Matt Thompson secured a
2-1 lead until a late goal iced
the victory for St. Mary.
"They took advantage of a
couple more opportunities
than we did," French said of
the Monarchs. "You tip your
hat and move on."
The Eagles had forced a
third game with a 4-1 win in
Oshawa Tuesday in Game 2.

PICKERING —The Picker-
ing Panthers minor pee-
wee select hockey team
came home winners at the
Richmond Hill Select tour-
nament recently.
After having lost to Clar-
ington in quadruple over-
time in the final of the
Nor th Toronto Select
Tournament, held over the
Christmas break, the
Richmond Hill crown was
a sweet victory savoured
by the squad.
The Panthers faced a
strong Barrie team in the
f inal. Cody Harding
emerged as the hero for
Pickering, scoring the
game winner with five min-
utes remaining in regula-
tion time to lift the Pan-
thers to a 3-2 victory. Tim
Kropman and Ryan Hof-
mann also scored.
Harding came up big
again for the Panthers in
the semifinal clash against
the host Richmond Hill
peewees. With the score
tied 2-2 after regulation
and the teams playing 3-
on-3 in overtime, Harding
stepped up to score the
game winner. Harding and
Kropman scored in regula-
tion time.
The Panthers went un-
defeated in three round-
robin games. In game one,
the Pickering peewees
edged Clarington 2-1.
Kropman and Adam
Goodwin scored.
In game two, Pickering
managed a 5-3 victory over
Av enue Road. Jordon De-
Silva netted a pair of goals;
Josh Spitzer, Jesse
Aldridge and an empty
netter by Kyle Adams
rounded out the scoring.
Goodwin chipped in with
three assists.
Pickering closed out
round-robin play with a 4-2
win over South-East Lon-
don. Pickering trailed by
two goals before scoring
four unanswered markers
to post the come-from-be-
hind victory. Kropman led
the way with two goals;
Harding and DeSilva
added one apiece.
Goalies Justin Watson
and Tyler Welsh played
well all weekend and were
supported by the superb
defensive play of Kyle
Dwyer, Chris Halket, Ryan
Hofmann, Marco Pompilii,
Kevin Thompson and
Brandon Wippler.
Rounding out the team
are forwards Billy
Desroches, Greg Fowler
and Ryan Tsukamoto.
Andre Wippler coaches
the team, assisted by Phil
Watson, Steve Hofmann,
and trainer Brian Thomp-
son. The manager is Scott
Goodwin.

When it comes to kitchens and bath-
rooms Plumbing Mart knows a thing or
two.
With 45 years experience and 18,000
projects under their belt, you would have
thought they had installed every design
imaginable. But that’s not entirely true.
You see Plumbing Mart is always on
the leading edge of product innovation and
just when you think there could never be
another unique ensemble; they will show
you many new and exciting ones in their
showroom.
“It’s true that we have encountered
every possible situation when it comes to
installing a kitchen or bath regardless of the
space,” says Sam. “But we’ll never run out
of unique ideas for your home.”
Visit their showroom and you’ll see
what Sam is talking about. Plumbing Mart
is filled with the most beautiful, eye-catch-
ing, exquisitely designed bathrooms and
kitchens you’ll find anywhere in the GTA
and beyond. In fact you probably won’t
f ind them anywhere else.
In the picture at right is just one
example of a variation on a theme. This
Vichy tub from MAAX Genna will fit into
your existing space. It has a standard length
but is wider at one end and deeper than a
traditional tub. With
two integrated head-
rests, inclined arm-
rest and options
such as whirlpool
and airpool, you’ll
never want to get
out of the tub.
Right now
Plumbing Mart has
a “Suite Deal” for
you. You’ll get
$1,000 off your ren-
ovation and $2,500
off if you have two
renovations done at the same time.
Satisfying their customers is what has
made Plumbing Mart leaders when it
comes to kitchen and bathroom renova-
tions.
“Every project is a team effort
between the sales consultant, the crew, the
site manager and site supervisor,” says
Sam. “That’s to ensure each and everyone
of our customers is completely satisfied
with their project which is also backed by
Plumbing Mart’s 5-year installation war-
ranty.”
Plumbing Mart designs, supplies and
installs with no hidden extras.
They also offer a FREE in-home, no
obligation estimate.
Located at 1534 Midland Ave., the
Plumbing Mart showroom is only 15 min-
utes from anywhere in Ajax and Pickering.
It's a short drive west on Hwy 401, south on
McCowan Rd. to Lawrence, go west two
major intersections to Midland and then
just one block north to Plumbing Mart on
the west side.

1,500m freestyle and
placed eight in the 200m
freestyle.
The women also did
well, led by Laura Barnes,
15 , and her bronze in the
100m breaststroke and
seventh in the 200m.
Sarah Wolch, 15, and
Vanessa Wappel, 15, put
together a string of per-
sonal best swims over the
weekend. Both Wolch and
Wappel shaved two sec-
onds off their previous
best times in the 200m
breaststroke.
The team came home
with a total of seven
medals.
They compete next in
the provincial champi-
onships.
