College teachers may walk Shelter opening on the Herizon Projected summer completion for Ajax women’s home By Danielle Milley Staff Writer DURHAM –After several delays, a permanent women’s shelter is now on track to open its doors this summer. The planning for Herizon House’s home in Ajax began a few years ago, with the doors supposed to open last fall. But due to red tape and the need for more funding, construction was delayed. Christie May, manager of de- velopment with Herizon House, said work began in the fall and things are now on track. “We are scheduled (to open) for sure this summer,” Ms. May said. “(But) just because our permanent shelter isn’t built doesn’t mean we’re not operat- ing.” An interim location opened last May with 25 beds, the same number the permanent facility is to have. However, the current four-bedroom house and condi- tions are cramped. “At our interim shelter we have been full for months now so we’re looking forward to having the extra space,” said Catherine Car- ney-White, executive director. The new building is to be 15 ,000 square feet with 10 bed- rooms, an elevator, large play- room and living area. The shelter is also unique in that it can accommodate chil- dren with special needs, women or children with disabilities and offers an onsite office for the Durham Regional Police Service. “That’s a pilot project that’s never happened in a shelter in Ontario before,” Ms. Carney- White said. The shelter, which also serves Whitby, offers a place for women Durham staff votes 83 per cent in favour of strike mandate By Mike Ruta Staff Writer DURHAM –Durham College fac- ulty could walk off the job in less than two weeks. Staff at Ontario’s 24 communi- ty colleges on Tuesday voted 74.5 per cent in favour of a strike that would begin March 3. The Ontario Public Service Employees’ Union (OPSEU) rep- resents roughly 8,500 teachers, counsellors and librarians, in- cluding almost 300 Durham Col- lege (DC) staff members. Negoti- ations on a new collective agree- ment with management, the Col- lege Compensation and Appoint- ments Council, have been at a standstill for several months over the issues of pay and workload. Peter McKeracher, a member of faculty’s provincial bargaining team and a DC teacher, says 83 per cent of Durham staff gave the union a strike mandate. The president of OPSEU local 354 says roughly eight out of every 10 local members took part in the vote. “They’re prepared to go,” he says. “You don’t take that step lightly and it’s a difficult decision, but they’re ready to support the team.” Mr. McKeracher says a provin- cially-appointed mediator is ex- pected to get the two sides to- gether soon, and faculty wants “an appropriate agreement with management before the dead- line.” However, if there’s no deal, “we intend in a strike to put up pick- et lines and we expect people to honour them,” he says. Pickets would slow down incoming traf- fic, making it difficult for stu- dents and university staff to get onto the grounds. “(We’d expect people) to dis- ✦See Work page 2 ✦See Durham page 5 ON ICE St. Mary off to a good start Sports, 25 MOOSE HUNTING Hackman, Romano star Entertainment, 23 A/P PAGE 2 NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, February 20, 2004 www.durhamregion.com HOURS Mon. - Wed. 10-6 Thurs. - Fri. 10-9 Sat. 10-6 Sun. 11-4 rrs TM FINANCING ACCEPTED PHONE ORDERS ACCEPTED 40 FACTORY OUTLETS ACROSS ONTARIO INCLUDING... As well, coun- sellors offer legal and housing support and there are programs for children. Even though construction is under way, there is still a lot of fund-raising to be done. Ms. Carney-White said the final phase of the campaign has just begun with a goal of raising $500,000. The organization is reaching out to corporate part- ners, as well as municipalities. The Town of Ajax has included in its 2004 budget the $20,000 re- quested by the organization and Pickering council is to consider the same amount when it begins its budget process in the spring. Ms. Carney-White said mem- bers of the community have come forward with donations to have rooms in the new facility named after a loved one. “We really want the communi- ty to be involved in the last phase of fund-raising,” she said. Politicians’ severance pay costs Region $145,000; Arthurs yet to apply By Carly Foster Staff Writer DURHAM –Former councillors are cashing in on severance packages from the Region. Six of the seven eligible region- al councillors have applied for the severance, which gives one month’s pay for every year served. (The package has since been extended to a maximum of 18 months, but is not retroactive to last term.) The total cost to the region is $145,000. Fo rmer Oshawa mayor Nancy Diamond, who was defeated by Mayor John Gray, has applied for her region severance and will take home more than $27,000 for her 15 years on council. While on council, Ms. Diamond spent years denouncing sever- ances and the municipal politi- cians who accept them. Using that as a basis, Oshawa council recently denied her re- quest to receive $65,000 in local severance. And former Oshawa regional councillor Claire Aker, who also spoke out against severance packages and opted out of the local one, has collected around $13,600 from Durham. Former Pickering mayor Wayne Arthurs (now an MPP for Ajax-Pickering-Uxbridge) is eli- gible for the same amount as Ms. Diamond but has not responded, said Garth Johns, the Region’s commissioner of human re- sources, who confirmed all the severance numbers. Mr. Arthurs said in an interview that it’s still his intention to apply for the money. He has six months to do so, Mr. Johns said. Oshawa’s Bob Boychyn left re- gional council in July 2003, after being named justice of the peace by the Ministry of the Attorney General for the Oshawa-Whitby area. For his nine years on council, he collected around $25,000. Jim McMaster, who lost his eight-year post as Ajax regional councillor to Colleen Jordan, has collected just under $22,200. Doug Moffatt chose not to run in the fall election after spending six years as the mayor of Port Perry, and has received around $16,600 severance. Mr. Moffatt is chairman of the Durham Re- gional Police service board and is seeking the federal Liberal nomi- nation for Clarington-Scugog- Uxbridge. Defeated by Brock Mayor Keith Shier, Terry Clayton has received around $13,600. Warren Young, who was only on regional council for one term, does not qualify for severance, because a councillor must serve more than three years to be eligi- ble. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, February 20, 2004 PAGE 3 A/P Didn’t hug the taxman last year? Ms. Visser said although she has never had to face a college strike be- fore, she was in a similar situation during high school. Some other students at the college, now into work placement positions, are concerned a strike could affect the outcome of this semester. “We’re supposed to graduate this year,” said Carrie Hewitt, who along with friend Jennifer Willman is wor- ried her placement time could be af- fected. In their second year of early child- hood education at the college, they were on their way to write an exam Wednesday. Neither had any immedi- ate plans of action if the strike occurs. “We’re just trying to get through,” said Ms. Willman. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, February 20, 2004 PAGE 5 A/P TLC DOGS OBEDIENCE, DAYCARE & BOARDING CALL: (647) 297 DOGS [3647] www.tlcdogs.ca tlcdogs@sympatico.ca WHERE LEARNING IS FUN! However, in the event of a strike, school would be out early for Durham Col- lege students. “We wouldn’t be running our full-time day college program,” she says. “Our courses would be cancelled.” Ms. Balenko says in admin- istration talks on how to pro- ceed in the event of a strike, the first priorities are to en- sure people on the picket line are treated with respect and that those crossing it know what to expect. “They’re preliminary discus- sions because the strike vote just happened,” she says. The University of Ontario Institute of Technology “would operate as usual, as well as Trent University cours- es there, because they are sep- arate institutions,” says Ms. Balenko. Faculty is seeking a 9.5-per cent increase over two years, while management’s last offer spreads that amount over three. Staff says accepting the offer means by the end of the deal they would be making less money than high school teachers. Traditionally, faculty pay has been between that of a high school teacher and a uni- versity professor. Management has also pro- posed individual workload ne- gotiations between faculty members and their supervi- sors, a non-starter for union members who say more staff is needed to reduce heavy work- loads that are affecting the quality of education at col- leges. “They certainly have reached the point that they believe the bargaining team needs additional leverage to get an appropriate settlement, and they aren’t willing to ac- cept no improvements in workload and inadequate salaries,“ Mr. McKeracher says. Durham College ‘hopeful’ of contract settlement ✦ Durham from page 1 Why are so many trustees opposed to having atten- dance recorded at commit- tee meetings? The answer is they don’t want to look bad. Durham District School Board members of- fered up some pretty lame argu- ments Monday night in defending their position. Attendance is currently taken at board and standing committee meetings, totalling about 20 a year. Once a year a report on trustee at- tendance is publicly released. Oshawa Trustee Mike Barrett proposed that attendance be taken at other meetings, namely commit- tees that trustees volunteer to sit on, such as the special-education advisory and joint services commit- tees. It’s a fact that a few members of the previous board were barely showing up at all by the end of the last term. Some current board members say the problem is behind them, and thus there’s no reason to take count of who’s there and who’s not. Most disturbing was Trustee Paul Crawford’s suggested link be- tween trustees’ paltry, $5,000-a-year salary and responsibility for show- ing up at meetings. Why run if you’re not committed to being on the job? He said he should be given credit for the “hundreds of hours” he spends studying parliamentary procedure and the Education Act - please. Oshawa Trustee Susan Shetler said trustees “are not here to mini- manage ourselves.” Issues of trustee attendance should be dealt with “on a personal and private basis,” she said. In other words, don’t let anyone know if an elected representative isn’t attending meet- ings. Some trustees had better argu- ments. Pickering Trustee Sherry Croteau said attendance and ac- countability don’t go hand in hand, that the former “is only a bum in a seat.” True enough. But it is a basic starting point, and I would note the previous term’s often-absent trustees were the weakest on the board. If you don’t show up, you don’t hear directly what’s going on, which puts you at a disadvantage. Since Trustee Barrett’s motion left out expulsion and suspension/expulsion appeals meetings, Scugog Trustee Steve Mar tin was opposed. He said there are other meetings trustees are ex- pected to attend where a count won’t be taken, so it’s not fair. He has a point there, although trustees have yet to consider Whitby Trustee John Dolstra’s motion that includes the other committees. “There are trustees who have taken advantage of the system,” student trustee Carolyn Arbuckle said. If there’s no attendance problem on this board, why oppose keeping a record, she reasoned. Well said. Trustees voted 6-5 against Trustee Barrett’s motion. Mike Ruta’s column appears every third Friday. E-mail mruta@durhamregion.com. Appearance is everything for trustees Mike Ruta s t a f f w r i t e r P PAGE 6 NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, February 20, 2004 www.durhamregion.com Getting back to our roots Pickering led the way with waste diversion; ready for next step The facts speak loud and clear: further waste diversion is a no-brainer for residents, the City and the environment in general. Now, if the City and the Region can just get a deal done, Pick- ering residents could be joining thousands across Durham in di- verting more than half their waste from landfills. The City has really come full circle on the issue. After all, it was the success of a pilot project in the Amberlea community that provided the hard evidence of just how well a waste diver- sion program can work. That Pickering community of about 500 homes began using a three-stream system back in 2001, which separated garbage from organic items and recyclables. The ini- tial success rate of 63-per-cent diversion led to extension after extension of the initial six-month trial. From those beginnings, the Region introduced a similar sys- tem to the townships of Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge and the municipality of Clarington. Again, the results have been stag- gering. Overall there, 50 per cent more waste was diverted dur- ing the last eight months of 2003, versus the same period a year earlier. Landfill tonnage was down 17 per cent. At issue now is the transferring of Pickering's waste responsi- bilities from the City to the Region. On its own, Pickering does- n't have the funds to get the program up and running city-wide. But Durham, through its waste reserve fund, can cover the cost of organic waste bins and the education needed to implement the program, hence the switch. Both sides must come together as quickly as possible to en- sure a deal is done. For too long Pickering, and Durham in gen- eral, have lagged behind other regions and communities in waste diversion, further contributing to the province-wide prob- lem of having enough landfill space to send waste. This is an overdue solution that will only get better should the proposed new indoor composting facility in Pickering also take flight. Right now Region officials and the operators, Miller Waste Systems, are finalizing plans that would see the much- needed facility built along Squires Beach Road. And we haven't even begun to talk about all the benefits to the environment that come with properly diverting our waste. So, good for the City for taking the right approach in finally moving to solve a historic and harmful problem. But, it's time to get on with the job of making it a reality. Hospital needs true consultation with public To the editor: Re: 'Check your vitriol at the door,' column, Feb. 15. While David Stell correctly notes the need for a positive, proactive approach to the pending hospital meeting, his col- umn fails to reflect the decisions that have already been taken without public consultation, or the conditions that have been imposed on the public forum to be held in Ajax Feb. 24. The consultation process must not be dismissed out of hand before it begins. Accordingly, the board of directors must foster true consultation and open up the public sessions to permit: • An unlimited number of citizens to attend; • Drop the requirement that only 'registered' members of the public may attend; and • Enter into these discussions seeking information and advice - the true mean- ing of consultation. Through their respective councils, the citizens of Ajax and Pickering are demanding a consultation process. It would be a positive first step in this di- rection if our hospital were to honour this desire, and enter into an open and unrestricted dialogue. Peter Clendinneng Ajax Editor’s note: The Pickering session is March 10 in the Pickering Library central branch auditorium from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Pickering News Advertiser A Metroland Community Newspaper Tim Whittaker Publisher Joanne Burghardt Editor-in-Chief Tony Doyle Managing Editor Duncan Fletcher Director of Advertising Eddie Kolodziejcak Classified Advertising Abe Fakhourie Distribution Manager Lillian Hook Office Manager Cheryl Haines Janice O’Neil Composing Managers News/Sales 905-683-5110 Classifieds 905-683-0707 Distribution 905-683-5117 News Fax 905-683-0386 General Fax 905-683-7363 Death Notices 905-683-3005 E-mail tdoyle@ durhamregion.com Web address durhamregion.com Mailing Address 13 0 Commercial Ave., Ajax, Ont. Vince Sgambelluri won $86,629 in the Lotto Super 7 draw, while Jacqueline Kernachan shared the same amount with five co-workers at Fairview Lodge Nursing Home in Whitby. “We’re all very surprised and excit- ed, we’ll definitely continue playing as a group,” Ms. Kernachan told On- tario Lottery Gaming Corporation staff in Toronto while picking up a cheque for $86,269. The group has no immediate plans for its Lotto Super 7 winnings beyond banking individual shares. “I checked the numbers in the newspaper and said to my wife, ‘I think we won big’,” Mr. Sgambelluri told OLGC staff. “Everyone in the family checked the ticket to be sure.” The 48-year-old sales consultant at a car dealership and his wife Rina have one son and one daughter. The family is planning a trip to Aruba, will pay off some debts and bank the remainder. Equipment has been cleaned, returned to local site AJAX – The monitoring of eight pa- tients continues after they were ex- posed to surgical equipment that may have come in contact with dust. Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital spokesman Katie Cronin- Wood said she couldn’t say much about the patients, other than they are being monitored by their physi- cians. Staff at the hospital found dust and particles on surgical equipment in the central processing depart- ment, where instruments are steril- ized. The contaminated equipment was discovered Sunday, Feb. 15, fol- lowing an inspection of ductwork at the hospital. “The central processing depart- ment was back in full swing as of (Thursday) morning,” said Ms. Cronin-Wood. “The area was thor- oughly cleaned and the equipment was all resterilized. “We had air-quality experts in and they’ve done testing and auditing. Everything is back to normal.” Infectious disease experts said the risk to the eight patients is “ex- tremely low,” Ms. Cronin-Wood added. She also praised the co-operation between the two Rouge Valley sites. Equipment was taken to Centenary in Scarborough, cleaned, repack- aged and returned to Ajax, Ms. Cronin-Wood noted. “We can proceed with all surgical and clinical procedures,” she said. On Monday, four of 40 surgical procedures were postponed. “Other than those four and a handful of clinic cases because of the type of equipment needed,” no other procedures were delayed, she said. Groen/ News Advertiser photo A real nature lover DURHAM –– Benna Segal took advantage of the perfect weather and snow conditions over last weekend to enjoy the trails at Dagmar Cross Country Ski Centre, just north of Pickering. AJAX –The twice-delayed demoli- tion of a bridge spanning Hwy. 401 is going ahead this weekend. Weather permitting, the work will be done between midnight and 8 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 22. Cold temperatures the past two weekends forced the delays and if the temperatures fall below minus-15 C, it could be postponed again. While the western Harwood Av- enue bridge is being demolished, the 401 will be closed in both directions, with traffic diverted onto local roads. Westbound traffic will be di- verted at Salem Road and east- bound traffic at Westney Road. Harwood will be closed to north- south traffic during the demolition work. It will be closed at Birch Cres- cent to the north and at Achilles Road to the south. The bridge is the first of two to be demolished to make way for a newer, larger structure. The eastern bridge should be demolished in the sum- mer, probably in August, once the new western portion is completed. When the 401 lanes are closed to traffic, the contractor will spread a layer of sand across the highway under the structure to protect the existing asphalt surface. Jackham- mers will be used to break-up the bridge, not explosives. The concrete pieces will drop onto the sand cushion below. From there, the chunks will be further broken down and moved to the side of the highway. By 8 a.m. Sunday the rub- ble and sand will be removed and the highway reopened to traffic. Nearby residents may experience construction noises during the de- molition. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, February 20, 2004 PAGE 11 A/P For more information, please contact: Commissions, trailing commissions, management fees and expenses all may be associated with mutual fund investments. Through her Famous People Players theatre company, she helps guide kids through the crossroads of life, showing how taking the wrong path of drugs and alcohol causes young people to lose their dreams. The reactor, the first of four to undergo a costly refurbishing, is operating a 100-per-cent capacity, Ontario Power Genera- tion vice-president Pat McNeil said Tuesday. “It’s the first time it’s been at 100 per cent since 1996,” he stated while pro- viding an update on sta- tion conditions during a meeting of the Communi- ty Advisory Committee. Units 1 to 4 are on the ‘A’ side of the station and it was taken off-line in late 1997 following a scathing report on the plant’s condition. Refur- bishing the four reactors is several hundreds of mil- lions of dollars over-bud- get and at least one year overdue. John Coleby, the site vice-president, said Unit 4 is “really performing nice- ly. “The unit is in very good shape. “We did not expect to get to 100 per cent so quickly. Things are really boding well (for) the fu- ture.” Mr. Coleby noted the unit will be taken off-line in April for a planned maintenance outage. The company had esti- mated capacity for Unit 4 would peak at 96 per cent, Mr. McNeil said. Units 5, 7 and 8 are also at full capacity, while Unit 6 is just coming back on- line after a planned out- age. Presently, the company is waiting for a series of reviews to be completed, including one headed by former federal finance minister John Manley ex- pected to be released in mid-March. Mr. Manley is focusing on “what the future of OPG ought to be,” Mr. McNeil stated, adding it will also recommend to the government about continuing the restart of the ‘A’ side. “The government is get- ting an awful lot of sub- missions,” he noted. OPG has shifted its focus to Unit 1, having moved engineering and construction work away from Units 2 and 3, Mr. McNeil added. “There were no layoffs of regular staff. Approxi- mately 50 contract staff were let go,” Mr. McNeil said. Mr. Coleby said among the areas the company is focusing on with Unit 4 are improving human per- formance, improving pro- ductivity and reducing the backlog of mainte- nance projects. Challenges include “a 30-year-old plant and some of the systems are quite old.” Other issues, he said, include “plant obsoles- cence and parts availabil- ity,” making productivity improvements, and the impact of Unit 1 returning to service on other activi- ties at the plant. It is interesting to note that March Break cruises are typically not surcharged the same way as land-based packages. Families with children book 25 per cent of all cruise vacations. Most cruise lines offer special programs, facilities, and activities based on age. Children and teens not only get to meet kids their own age, but often travel at a substantially-reduced rate. Many cruise lines have extensive programs and special activities for every age group, from toddler to teen. This gives youngsters a chance to experience the cruise with kids their own age while mom and dad enjoy some adults-only time together. Naturally, many of the traditional pleasures of a cruise, such as shore excursions, onboard ship activities, and dinners, can be shared by the whole family together. Youth and Teen Centres include various games tables, movie rooms, and all the latest video games. There are extensive play areas for younger children. For teens, there are special entertainment hideouts where they can “hang-out” with their new-found friends. The friendly staff co-ordinate and supervise a variety of activities including karaoke, movie fest, theme parties, and more. Many cruise lines cater to family vacationers, however, some ships have better facilities than others. Your CruiseShipCenters consultant can help you plan the right cruise for your family. There is some space left for March Break this year but now is definitely the time to book for next year, especially if you require family staterooms or adjoining rooms. Drop by our new location in the Westney Heights Plaza, beside Shoppers Drug Mart or call us at 905-619-0323 or visit us at www.letscruise.com. On Feb. 27, local chefs will com- pete in the Battle of the Hors D’oeuvres, a fun evening of good food and fund-raising to benefit the Regent Theatre Renewal Pro- ject. Ten chefs from Oshawa, Whit- by, Bowmanville and Ajax will prepare hors d’oeuvres, salads and desserts, which diners will get to eat and vote on in a light- hearted competition at Lviv Hall, 38 Lviv Blvd. “It’s a lot of fun,” said Susan Tran, of Cordon Sue Sweets in Whitby. “It’s not serious, it’s fun. It’s for a good cause. It’s a nice way to give back but also have some fun.” She’s also looking forward to working with other Durham chefs and getting out for a change. “We don’t get out of the kitchen much,” she said of chefs. “People think that if you’re a chef, you get to go out and dine out a lot but you don’t. You don’t get out much at all. It’s your life.” Ms. Tran, whose business spe- cializes in wedding cakes, will be preparing fruit tarts for the event and will decide what kind of fruit to use when she sees what’s avail- able. Frank Mollica, chef at Silks Café and Catering in Bow- manville, is entered in the hors d’oeuvres category with his Silks Chantilly seafood fusilli, a rather poetic-sounding dish. It’s got shrimp, baby clams and scallops in a Chantilly (cream) sauce over pasta, served with Cajun asiago puff-pastry twists. He’s looking forward to the competition. “It’s a little fun and it’s a little competitive. It’s a great way to be with other chefs and see what they have to offer,” he said. And it’s for charity, which is even better, he said. Another competitor is chef Simon Bush, owner of the Gallery Café in Oshawa. His entry will be roasted portabella mushrooms with baked vegetable ratatouille and Quebec goat cheese. Also taking part are Kings Court Catering, with a five leaf native Canadian salad, A/Cater- ing, of Ajax, with summer salad with fruit and cucumber in a light cream dressing, Harper’s Restau- rant, Holiday Inn, Oshawa, with apple smoke brome lake spring rolls with a trip of sauces and lemongrass lotus, Pelican Cater- ing, of Oshawa, with braised fen- nel and onion-stuffed salmon, Hot Rocks Creative Diner, of Whitby, Loblaws Upstairs, Os- hawa, with tiramisu drizzled with caramel, and Sugar’s Bakery, Bowmanville, with a European sponge cake with mango mousse. If this has whet your appetite, tickets for the 6:30 p.m. event are $65 person, which includes the nine courses of appetizers and desserts plus a wine reception. Once you’ve eaten, you can vote for your favourite foods. There will also be a silent auction. There’s a dress code in effect and people must be over 19 to at- tend. Tickets are available by calling 905-576-3835. That’s where Soundwave Music Centre has decided to make a difference. The business’s subsidy initiative offers financial assistance to those who want to learn, but may not be able to af- ford the cost. “This program helps keep kids off the street, there’s been a lot of youth violence as of late,” said Nadia Brissett, one of the owners of Soundwave. Brissett teaches piano, along with owner Dean Del- peache, who teaches guitar. Other teachers are avail- able for bass and drums. “We hold an annual fund- raiser, which helps subsi- dize part of the (cost) of lessons,” said Delpeache. “Last year we had perform- ers from the U.S. come to help with the event.” Mo re fund-raisers are planned for the near future, said Brissett. “We assess the (financial needs) of potential stu- dents coming to us, and if they are truly in need, we offer the discounts,” she said. She added the amount of a discount varies depending on what the cus- tomer’s needs may be. Delpeache said rates for lessons are normally $20 for one half-hour tutorial. They offer students a chance to learn music by ear, rather than reading from the sheet, and can prepare stu- dents for their Royal Con- servatory of Music (RCM) exam. “We’re also planning to organize a choir program for four to 12-year-olds this summer,” Brissett added, and noted it “will help the kids become involved in the community.” It’s not only for kids and Delpeache said they have taught students from four to 40 years of age. Soundwave recently opened a new location at 755 Oklahoma Dr. in Picker- ing. For more information, call 416-299-0845 or visit its We b site at www.swmc.ca. Bands Unparalleled, Shift, Fade to Black, Dilib- erty and Fame Induced Apathy played for about 200 teens in the Feb. 7 show at the Petticoat Creek Community Centre. Opening the show was the five-member Unparal- leled, featuring a female lead singer. Second up, Shift, has members who all attend Dunbarton High School in Pickering. Fade to Black was third, followed by Diliberty, whose members are all 13 years old. Fame Induced Apathy rounded out the performances, ending the evening with a rendition of AC/DC’s ‘You Shook Me All Night Long.’ The next band night is April 3. Outdoor shows are being planned for May, June, July and August. The band event is one of many free events the City of Pickering offers each month to teens in Picker- ing and between the ages of 13 and 19. Teens are asked to show their free City of Pickering teen membership card or to get one at the door. See page 30 St. Mary scores 5-1 victory in semifinal series opener By Al Rivett Sports Editor PICKERING —The St. Mary Catholic Secondary School Monarchs made the most of their scoring opportunities against the Eastdale Collegiate Eagles in Durham Region senior boys' hockey playoff semifinal action yesterday afternoon. In fact, the Monarchs preyed on the Eagles for two short- handed markers to go with a power-play goal en route to a tidy 5-1 victory in Game 1 of the Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) best-of- three semifinals at the Pickering Recreation Complex. The Monarchs can wrap up the series and earn a berth in the LOSSA finals for the second time in as many years with a vic- tory at Oshawa's Donevan Arena on Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. Monarchs' coach Mike Dion says his club was ready to go from the drop of the puck. "We knew that the first game in the series was very impor- tant. They understood the im- portance of it and executed per- fectly," says Dion. The big blow for the Eagles came early. With Monarchs team captain Nolan Smith in the box on a tripping penalty, Ryan Eickmeier and Kyle Weter- ing worked the 2-on-1 perfectly, with Eickmeier firing a shot past Eastdale starter Dave Leger. The short-handed goal, says Dion, provided a big confidence boost for his Monarchs, while also serving to deflate the Ea- gles. "The first two or three min- utes of the game were very even, but the short-handed goal took the wind out of their sails," noted Dion. "Our goalie (Matt Thompson) bailed us out on a breakaway, too. "We capitalized on our chances and the two short- handed goals really helped us out." Coming off an emotional quarter-final series victory over another Oshawa team, the McL aughlin Trojans, Eagles coach Josh French says he hoped his players wouldn't ex- perience a setback in the opener against St. Mary. "Yes, I think we experienced a bit of a letdown. We were wor- ried about that," says French. He concedes allowing two short-handed markers was a recipe for defeat against a strong St. Mary squad. "Any time you give up two short-handed goals in a game, your odds of winning drop off dramatically," says French, adding his squad gave up only one short-handed goal all sea- son. "But, you have to give St. Mary credit, they're very oppor- tunistic. Almost every scoring chance they had they popped it in." With home-ice advantage and an expected crowd of 500, French expects his Eagles can battle back in the series. "I think we're going to carry some confidence into Game 2, knowing we were down a game to McL aughlin and had to put two good games together to win it," he says. "We're not going to throw in the towel. I'm sure we'll be a lot better on Tuesday." Following Eickmeier's goal, the Monarchs gained momen- tum through the remainder of the period. With Eastdale's Jon Cregg sent off for elbowing, St. Mary's Ryan Jackson connected on the power-play with a mere 30 seconds left in the first frame. Jason Krasnowski potted the third Monarchs goal at the 6:49 mark of the second period on another 2-on-1 break. Jackson slid a pass to Krasnowski at the side of the net for the goal. Shawn Coultice also added an assist. Keith Jeans scored the East- dale goal with 3:31 remaining in the period. After getting behind the St. Mary defence, he took a pass from John Shields for the goal. Mike Crystal added an as- sist. With 30 seconds remaining in the second period, the Mon- archs re-established their three- goal cushion, with Eickmeier scoring his second short-hand- ed goal of the game. The speedy forward broke up the play at his own blue-line, slid it ahead of an Eagles defenceman and, on a breakaway, blasted a shot past Leger. We t ering scored on a beautiful solo effort for the only goal of the third period. GAME NOTES:Thompson regis- tered two assists... Surprisingly, the Eagles outshot the Mon- archs 30-1 8 ... In the other semifi- nal series, the Pickering High Trojans own a 1-0 series lead after blitzing the Anderson Col- legiate Raiders 7-3 in Game 1 in Whitby Tuesday afternoon. Lightning novices beat hosts to win Clarington tourney DURHAM —— The Durham West L ightning AAA Wildlife Control novice girls' hockey team captured the 'C' championship in heart- stopping fashion at the fifth annu- al Clarington Girls' Hockey Associ- ation House League Tournament. Playing the host Clarington Dieghton Associates, the Durham West novices needed a goal in the dying seconds to post a narrow 2-1 victory in the 'C' division champi- onship game. Emily Mathieson was the game hero, potting the winner for the Lightning with a mere six seconds remaining. Melissa Briden scored the tying goal. Goaltender Taylor Watson was rock solid in the Durham West net, especially in the third period when she stoned Clarington shooters. For her efforts, Watson was named player of the game. Daniela Dennis, Katie Strain and Isabella Zeeb contributed solid play in the championship game. The Durham West girls started slowly, in their first time as tourna- ment participants and first time on a large ice surface, which seemed to overwhelm the novice squad. A strong effort by player of the game Melissa Briden, who scored five goals, kept the game re- spectable in an 11-6 loss to the Os- hawa Stars. In Game 2, the AAA Wildlife Control took charge and held off a strong Clarington Ontario Power Generation team to win 4-3. Alysha Audet was Durham West's player of he game. Ainsleigh Huls, Shawna Laws and Julia Cor- coron all had strong efforts. The Durham West novices trailed 5-0 at the end of the first period against the Clarington R Taylor Fuels squad. Led by player of the game Nicole Smith, the local novices never gave up. In fact, they scored five times, but came up short of the mark in a 6-5 loss. Mackenzie Watson, Cassidy Leblond and Amanda Rochon all supplied strong performances. Chris Watson coaches the team, assisted by Duncan Mathieson. The trainer is Dave Audet. Pickering petites come up short PICKERING —— The Pickering petite 'C' team came up a win short of the title at the recent Waterloo Ringette Tour- nament. Playing an undefeated team from London in the championship game, the Pickering squad battled gamely, but ended up on the wrong end of a 6- 3 score. The petites met a familiar foe, the Ajax Shooting Stars, in the semifinal, pulling out a narrow 5-4 victory to ad- vance to the gold-medal game. Anna Mulgrew scored the winner with 1:42 remaining, assisted by Caitlin Curtis. Julia Good was solid in net, making many key saves. In round robin play, Pickering de- feated Elora 10-4 in Game 1. Pickering controlled the play and offensively dominated the contest. Mulgrew led the way with four goals, Shawna But- ler followed with three, Caitlin Curtis had two and Caitlin Sebert added a single. Assisting were Samantha Pyper and Remi Vandebospoort each with two, and Rebecca Legere. Pickering then faced Ajax in Game 2, with Ajax holding on for a tight 6-5 victory. Pickering's defence of Sebert, Alanna Blenkarn, Krista Shaw and Sam Jesson played well. Curtis made numerous big saves. Pickering goaltender Caitlyn Hal- bert was unable to play due to injury. Filling in were Good for three games and Curtis for one. We’ve got Durham covered! Homes in this locale will be selected for installation of a revotionary New Lifetime roofing system!
