Email: service@pickeringhonda.com City sets out to protect its pets Bylaw would be one of the strictest in GTA By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING –In an effort to protect animals and prevent irresponsible pet store opera- tors from setting up shop in Pickering, council intends to pass one of the strictest by- laws in the GTA regulating pet stores next week. The bylaw applies to all pet stores and kennels; it regu- lates the cleanliness of the store and the conditions of the living quarters of animals. Individuals not complying with the bylaw can face fines of up to $25,000. “This bylaw is being put in place to protect pets because they can’t protect them- selves,” said Ward 2 City Councillor Bill McLean. Monday night the bylaw was passed by the executive committee (made up of mem- bers of council), but must go before council for final ap- proval. The bylaw also requires pet store owners to register every animal, not sell any diseased animals, and bring any ani- mal showing signs of sickness or disease to a veterinarian within 24 hours. Coun. McLean was the dri- ving force behind the bylaw after he received dozens of complaints from residents about a local pet store. Wa rd 2 Regional Councillor Mark Holland said he also re- ceived several complaints about the store. He contacted the Durham Humane Society and Pickering-Ajax-Whitby Animal Services and told the citizens he was hearing from to also call those agencies. “Unfortunately there was very little those authorities were able and wanted to do,” Coun. Holland said. “Life is giving dignity. Pets and ani- mals of all kinds should be given the opportunity to be given dignity.” Several people who bought animals from Lucky Pets (the store councillors received complaints about) were on hand Monday night to share their feelings about the bylaw. Durham man convicted of manslaughter Accused said he feared victim's Hells Angels links By Stephen Shaw Staff Writer DURHAM –A 21-year-old Port Perry man has been found guilty of manslaughter in the stabbing death of Jesse Gray during a post-prom field party in Uxbridge. A jury dismissed Cary Cleyndert's claims that he acted in self-defence when he fatally knifed the victim eight times, including once in the heart. Mr. Cleyndert's face turned f lush and he displayed no emotion from the prisoner dock as the verdict was deliv- ered at 5 p.m. Saturday. His lawyer later said his client was devastated by the jury's decision. ✦See Support page 4✦See Jury page 2 Art on the ceiling hoped to help childrens’ healing By Danielle Milley Staff Writer AJAX –Rouge Valley Health System's Ajax site is painting a rosy picture when it comes to making a child's stay in the hospital a little brighter. Children stuck in a hospital bed, staring up at the ceiling, now have something interest- ing to look at. The Ajax Creative Arts group has donated a number of ceiling tiles to the children's health ward. There are a num- ber of single tiles painted using bright colours such as the one of the smiling angel in front of a calming blue sky, but there are also a number of larger pieces. Courtney Bernard,13, de- signed one of the larger pieces. The six-piece mural of the world is going to be dis- played in the women's health area for new mothers to enjoy. The Grade 8 student at St. Francis de Sales designed the mural for art class but her teacher Kim McCann, a mem- ber of the art group, selected her for the project. He has always insisted on his in- nocence and was confident he'd be found not guilty," said Dirk Derstine. The eight-man, four-woman jury deliberated for three days before find- ing Mr. Cleyndert not guilty of second- degree murder but guilty of the lesser offence of manslaughter, which is de- fined by law as an unintentional killing. Mr. Cleyndert admitted to stabbing Mr. Gray, 24, of York Region, repeat- edly during a confrontation at a Zephyr Road farm June 8, 2002. But his lawyer argued he was in a "death fight" and that he only pulled the knife to defend himself from a vi- cious beating at the hands of Mr. Gray. Prosecutors Megan Allen and John Scott maintained the fight between Mr. Cleyndert and Mr. Gray was con- sensual, and that the accused created a contrived "poor-me defence" to avoid a conviction for second-degree mur- der. Neither the Crown nor the defence suggested manslaughter to the jury as a possible verdict during closing argu- ments. However, in his charge Justice Robert Clark instructed jurors to find Mr. Cleyndert guilty of manslaughter should they conclude that Mr. Gray provoked the accused by assaulting him. Mr. Derstine said the verdict could be viewed as a "compromise" decision by the jury. "They may have partially accepted both sides," he said. The parents and relatives of Mr. Cleyndert and Mr. Gray sat in oppo- site rows of the courtroom, and sever- al wept as the verdict was read. A large number of police officers were in the court, but there were no out- bursts. "I love you guys all," Mr. Cleyndert told family members as he was being led away in handcuffs to be brought back to jail, where he will await sen- tencing. John and Christine Gray, Jesse's parents, attended every day of the three-week trial. As the verdict was read, John Gray comforted his wife, who began to cry. John Gray politely turned down an interview request. "They need the time and support to deal with the tragedy of losing their son. Just like any other grieving par- ents who have lost a child to violent circumstances, they're experiencing a lot of emotions," said Durham Region- al Police Detective Chuck Nash, of the homicide unit. A date for Mr. Cleyndert's sentenc- ing hearing will be scheduled Monday in the Superior Court. Unlike a murder conviction, there is no minimum sentence for manslaugh- ter, and jail terms can range from time-served to, in rare cases, life im- prisonment. Mr. Cleyndert has already spent 20 months in protective custody due to concerns for his safety. The victim’s fa- ther and uncle are prominent Hells Angels, and there have been threats by other inmates directed at Mr. Cleyndert since his incarceration, his lawyer said. "There's a lot of concern about po- tential dangers to him," said Mr. Ders- tine, adding that his client has been kept out of the general jail population. More than 100 members of the Hells Angels took part in Mr. Gray's funeral procession and during early court ap- pearances Mr. Cleyndert wore a bul- letproof vest and was escorted by heavily armed tactical support offi- cers. Det. Nash said special security mea- sures were taken to ensure Mr. Cleyn- dert's safety, but added that is often done in serious, high-profile cases. Det. Nash said he isn't aware of any threats to Mr. Cleyndert since his ar- rest. "That's never been brought to my attention," he said. Court was told a "rude comment" Mr. Cleyndert made to Mr. Gray's girl- friend, Mellissa Bell, led to the fatal al- tercation just after 4 a.m. near a stage at the annual organized bush party at- tended by 500 young people, many of them students of Uxbridge Secondary School and other Durham schools. According to the evidence, Ms. Bell and a girlfriend got into a verbal dis- pute with Mr. Cleyndert, who at one point spit on the girls in anger. "You're f------ dead. You just spat on Jesse Gray's girlfriend," one of the girls began taunting Mr. Cleyndert. Ms. Bell told Mr. Gray, who angrily confronted Mr. Cleyndert, leading to the fight. Witnesses for the Crown said they saw Mr. Cleyndert return Mr. Gray's punches with underhand stab- bing motions to the victim's body. Mr. Cleyndert insisted he wanted no part of a fight with Mr. Gray, who had a reputation around Uxbridge as being "a tough guy from a tough fami- ly." "I heard of the Grays before and I didn't want any problems with them. I heard they are not people to mess with, that they're Hells Angels," he said. He said Mr. Gray, who weighed 244 pounds and was high on cocaine, wouldn't accept his apology and "clocked" him with a punch to the head. Mr. Gray began pummelling Mr. Cleyndert in the head and he became tangled in his coat as he tried to fend off his assailant. He said he slipped on a beer bottle and feared being kicked in the head as he nearly fell to the ground. "Then I pulled out the knife from my back pocket," he said, re-enacting for the court how he drew a butterfly knife while falling back on a 45-degree angle. The parents pleaded guilty last month to two counts each of forcible confinement, assault with a weapon and failing to provide the neces- saries of life. However, the extent of the abuse remained in dispute by the Crown and defence, and Judge Donald Halikowski on Monday handed down a set of “findings of fact” on the evi- dence called at a preliminary hearing. Court heard the brothers were beaten, tethered to beds, locked in cages and sub- jected to other cruel punish- ments at the hands of their adoptive parents from the time they were 3 and 5 years old until they were teenagers. The abuse included being beaten with various objects, including a shoehorn, being thrown outside in thunder- storms, tied to a bed in a basement, forced to sleep in a dog cage or a wooden crate, and being locked inside chained, enclosed cribs where they spent hours at a time and slept at night. Their 42-year-old adoptive mother - the sister of the boys’ biological mother, who died - said she caged the de- velopmentally delayed chil- dren to keep them out of trou- ble. Judge Halikowski said the boys were born with Fetal Al- cohol Syndrome and the cou- ple - the boys’ aunt and uncle - adopted the brothers, de- spite concerns they didn’t have the parenting skills needed to raise them. Initially, their mother tied them to their beds to keep them from wandering at night and disciplined them with a shoehorn or slippers, he said. The judge said the confine- ment at first was “well-inten- tioned,” but the mistreat- ment of the brothers eventu- ally grew into an ongoing pat- tern of physical and emotion- al abuse that at times “crossed the line to near tor- ture.” Court heard the brothers were eventually moved into cages made out of cribs, where they were confined at night by their parents and other relatives. The judge found the abuse occurred during the period from Jan. 1, 1988, to June 29, 2001, the day the frightened boys, now teenagers, were rescued from the Hwy. 7A farmhouse by Durham Re- gional Police and CAS. He said there were no signs at school that the boys were emotionally or physically abused at home, and that there is evidence their mother had taken sincere steps to make sure their health care and education needs were met. Watch the News Advertiser for details. Couple guilty of abusing children PICKERING –Ontario Power Generation is getting thinner in the executive ranks. Nine vice presidents have left the company since the Liberals formed the provin- cial government in the fall, with “most in the energy trad- ing market,” said OPG spokesman John Earl. He added the changes aren’t related to the delay in restarting the Pickering nu- clear station. “They trade in the market- place and the marketplace didn’t open the way OPG thought it would,” Mr. Earl said. One vice president had a “skill set in convergence” of gas and oil and the man “left for a place he can provide his skill set,” Mr. Earl stated. “We’re looking for cost sav- ings and streamlining, but we want to keep the best man- agement team in place,” he added. The company has to be ready for what’s “new and what’s coming.” On the ‘B’ side of the Pick- ering nuclear station and at the Darlington facility, a se- nior vice president and a vice president position are being combined. “We’ve merged two jobs into one. It’s a leaner organization, but we can also provide for some cost savings,” Mr. Earl said. On the ‘A’ side of Pickering, the two vice president posi- tions are being maintained while the refurbishing project is under way. Airport departure now 2012 at earliest Pickering plan not expected until late spring now By Danielle Milley Staf f Writer PICKERING –The plan for a proposed airport in north Pickering is now set to be re- leased in late spring. The Greater Toronto Air- port Authority, which would pay for and build the airport, was asked by the federal gov- ernment to undertake the in- terim planning. "(The study) is basically a draft plan for a proposed air- port in Pickering," said Steve Shaw, the GTAA's vice-presi- dent of corporate affairs and communications. "It should be available in late spring." The federal government pur- chased land in north Pickering in the 1970s with the intent to build an airport but, due to local opposition, the plan was killed. Only in recent years was it resurrected. Once the GTAA presents all of its reports to the federal government, it has final say on whether or not the air- port will be built. Mr. Shaw said the earliest Pickering would see an airport, if everything goes as planned, is 2012. It is being proposed as a "re- gional reliever" airport. "Like the City Centre or Hamilton (airports)," Mr. Shaw said. "Part of its defini- tion will come out of the dis- cussion. Its final role will come out of demand." With the increasing demand being placed on Pearson Inter- national Airport, another air- port is needed in the Greater To ronto Area to take the pres- sure off, the GTAA vice-presi- dent said. "Clearly the region does need a system of airports to serve corporate, aviation and commercial needs," Mr. Shaw said. The City of Pickering is stay- ing involved in the GTAA's study. "It's recognized in the Re- gional and City official plans as a regional airport and we support it as that," said Mayor Dave Ryan. "We are currently part of the planning process and we expect to remain a part of the planning process." Once the study is released in May or June, the GTAA is planning to hold open houses to explain the proposal to the public. The next step after the pro- posal is complete is an envi- ronmental assessment, which the GTAA hopes to begin be- fore the end of the year. Dis- cussions would take place dur- ing the EA to gather input from the public. OPG cuts executives ranks Sean Colangelo came from Markham to commend Pickering for what it is doing. “Unfortunately what we have here is the law not being sufficient to deal with living creatures and I commend you on the steps you are taking to deal with this,” he said. “I’m not here to blame anybody. I think what you are doing is a good step.” Mr. Colangelo’s puppy, which he purchased from Lucky Pets a month ago, became very sick and nearly died after it was brought home. Naji Majdalani, owner of Lucky Pets, also spoke to the committee. He said in the two years he has been in business he has been very successful and every pet store is going to have a small percentage of animals that will get sick or die. “If I said I’d never have sick dogs I’d be a liar,” Mr. Majdalani said. “Even big chains get sick dogs.” Wa rd 3 Regional Councillor Rick Johnson asked Mr. Majdalani if he would be able to comply with the new bylaw. Mr. Majdalani replied “defi- nitely.” The support from the committee for the bylaw was unanimous. “I’ve heard many disturbing things this evening, even if I hadn’t, this bylaw is necessary notwithstanding this present situation to prevent sim- ilar situations,” said Ward 3 City Councillor David Pickles. Coun. McLean said he hoped Durham Region and other munici- palities in the Region might adopt a similar bylaw. “These are not commodities like TVs and VCRs that are being sold,” Coun. She thought the items in the mural would give the feeling of freedom. The artists were asked to keep the paintings light and showed designs to hospital staff for approval to make sure there wasn't anything that would upset the children. And while region staff say the in- crease is what it should be, it’ll also be very difficult for council to avoid it by trimming back on expenditures, said Jim Clapp, Durham’s commissioner of finance. “There really isn’t an awful lot of room,” he said. “If we cut back, I sus- pect it’ll eat into programs.” The preliminary budget is used as a guideline for departments and out- side boards, including the Durham Regional Police, in their planning and presentations to the Region in March and April. Highlights from the proposed bud- get include: • escalating police spending: the DRPS want $107.3 million for 2004, which would include the cost of hiring seven new officers and 13 civilians, as well as adding a firearms training cen- tre. In 2000, the DRPS budget was $71.9 million. Staff say it has to be cut by $1.3 million. • $40.2 million to build and fix roads, $15.3 million of which taxpayers will cover. • $99.5 million in operations, cover- ing such expenses as salaries, pro- grams and departments. That’s up 6 per cent from 2003, but down from the $10 5.8 requested for 2004. • the conservation authorities have asked for $6.6 million, but staff have asked them to trim it to $4.7 million. • the Region’s total debt (including water and sewer): $224 million. In addition to the proposed tax in- crease, there’s an extra 1.2 per cent average tax increase to residents due to property reassessments. Budget presentations will be made the Region’s finance and administra- tion committee March 16, 17 and 18. All these years I’ve been bang- ing my head against the wall, trying to get ahead in this world using such outdated con- cepts as hard work, honesty and integrity, when all the time the answer was staring at me. Well, pointing at me is proba- bly more accurate. You don’t need to work hard in this world to get ahead. You don’t need ethics or morals. Apparently, all you need is a gravity defying, silicone- pumped pair of headlamps and, like Janet Jackson, the will to flash them wherever, whenever. If you are so endowed, the world will be beat a path to your chest, my friends. What a boob I’ve been. There were jugs of evidence all around me. Brittany Spears, Pamela Anderson, Ricardo Montalban. I’ve got a D-cup full of names of staggeringly successful celebrities who haven’t the talent to fill a train- ing bra, but who have some- thing much more valuable in today’s entertainment curren- cy: a perky set of credentials from the Dow-Corning Theatre School. So why not me? I know there’ll probably be some tittering at first, but the more I think about it, the more I realize there’s very little downside to this. Imagine, I won’t have to wear my chest protector in net anymore. I can canoe without a lifejacket. I won’t have the added expense of an airbag in my vehicle. When I’m working in the shop, I’ll have one more place to stick my pencil. When I’m bedridden in the old-age home, I won’t need a dinner tray. And when I get sick, just think how much fun I’ll have rubbing Vicks on my chest. Mind you, as I’ve stated ear- lier, having a pair of vulcanized nose cones is only half of the equation. If you really want to make it big, you have to show them off. I’m new to this so I’ll probably have to start off small. Oh, and I can’t forget kissing practice. That could take hours. Not just the regular kissing of course, but the really sexy kind re- served for puckering up with other silicone jobs on national TV. In what has become an ominous situation at OPG, a pack of some 60 engineers and more than a half-dozen vice presidents have recently been given the gate. With huge cost overruns and extensive project de- lays at the Pickering ‘A’ reactor complex, a taxpayer might fairly ask: Why did the management changes take so long? The nuclear facility has been under the spotlight for years but successive administrations have stumbled and bumbled and accomplished nothing - except of course to spend billions of dollars. Pickering ‘A’, which started up in 1971, was moth- balled in 1997 and has since gone years behind and bil- lions over budget in the almost fruitless effort to get the four reactors restarted. Meanwhile, Ontarians face the possibility of not having enough energy capacity when the heat is on this coming summer. OPG, from its million-dollar executives and their massive expense accounts to a severe lack of provin- cial oversight, has been a sad mess for years. Things are so bad, OPG has finally stopped work on Pickering ‘A’ Units 2 and 3 to focus all its energies on restarting Unit 1. Unit 4 was finally restarted last fall long after it was expected to be up and running. For OPG, the crisis point really comes March 15 when former federal finance minister John Manley re- leases his report on the status of the corporation. Mr. Manley has been given a free hand by Ontario Energy Minister Dwight Duncan to make whatever recom- mendations he feels are necessary to overhaul OPG. Once the Manley report is in, it will be up to Premier Dalton McGuinty and his Liberal government to make a final decision on the Pickering ‘A’ situation. Should they stay the course and follow Pickering ‘A’ to its final conclusion no matter what the cost? Or will they pull the plug on this experiment which, so far, has been a massive failure? It’s just one of the huge decisions Premier McGuin- ty will have to make. The energy future of Ontario is riding in the balance. Truly a flash of inspiration Keep hydrants clear - for everyone's safety To the editor: Consider this an important winter reminder to the people of Ajax and the surrounding area -- please keep your fire hy- drant clear of snow. This safety issue is most problematic where a fire hydrant is located between two driveways. Sunday morning I noticed a fire hydrant on Delaney Drive covered in snow. I can only imagine what will happen if we get another big snow. Every year, I see people shov- elling out their driveways, and piling the snow right on top of their fire hydrant, eventually covering it. I ask myself where their common sense must be. L ast winter, my cousin's neighbours completely covered their hydrant with snow. When I spoke to them about this, I was not only told to mind my own business, but that it was the Town of Ajax's responsibili- ty to keep the hydrants clear of snow. As I told them, it is your re- sponsibility to ensure you don't pile any snow on a fire hydrant. If a hydrant can't be seen, it's as good as broken because the fire department won't be able to use it. Please, for our safety as well as the safety of our firefighters, make sure the hydrant located out front of your property is clear of snow, and visible from the road. Gord Tewnion Ajax Pay increase a 'travesty' To the editor: By the time this letter is pub- lished the vote will be history and, in all likelihood, Durham Regional Council will have voted themselves an exorbitant salary increase. This salary in- crease is a travesty. Many ex- cuses for this increase are given by council; these range from the allotted annual in- crease to equalization pay- ments with similarly sized re- g ions. When will our politicians re- alize that it has nothing to do with the size of the region? It has to do with performance. We have many new councillors at the regional level, so why is it that we are providing raises for councillors who have only at- tended a few meetings to date? Fur thermore, in my best esti- mation, as long as taxes con- tinue to increase, our roads continue to fall into disrepair and our water and sewer rates skyrocket, how can council claim it is performing at or above par? If the salary increase at the regional level has been passed, I would suggest that each citi- zen call his regional councillor and the mayor and let them know what he thinks. Minister John Gerretsen made the commitment in a Thursday meeting with Mayor Ryan to come view provincially owned land in Pickering, but they haven’t worked out exactly when yet. The City had been seeking provin- cial input into the future of specific property in Pickering for some time, but with the Liberals now in charge, it is finally receiving support. The purpose of last week’s meet- ing was for the mayor and minister to discuss the City’s growth manage- ment study, which is now in its sec- ond phase. The study will guide development in central Pickering, which includes the provincially owned Seaton land, and examine the City’s urban boundary. “The meeting was a good first meeting and the minister was appre- ciative of the work we’ve done. He has agreed to come to Pickering per- sonally and become acquainted with the area the growth management study covers,” Mayor Ryan said. Although the City is not waiting for input from the Province before moving ahead with the study, dis- cussions between the two sides is an important step. “The previous government would- n’t speak to us at all, at least now we have a minister who will come out and see what we’re talking about,” Mayor Ryan said. In order to decrease the number of homes built on the Oak Ridges Moraine in Richmond Hill, the for- mer provincial Tory government swapped land in Seaton with the de- velopers. The City has not been made aware of the details of that swap yet, but last week’s meeting opened the doors to further discussion of the issue. No date has been set, but Mayor Ryan said it would be most effective to take Minister Gerretsen up in a helicopter for a tour once the snow has melted. At a recent meeting, council passed a motion supporting senior staff enter into negotiations to have the Region take over the responsibil- ity for public transit. “We have to find a way to have seamless regional transit and the only way we’re going to do that is by making transit regional,” Mayor Dave Ryan said. Wa rd 1 Regional Councillor Mau- rice Brenner sited York Region and how it has begun working toward seamless regional transit that not only connects its residents with the rest of York Region, but also with other parts of the Greater Toronto Area. Their very playoff life hangs in the balance as the powerhouse Hurri- canes can sweep the best-of-seven OHA Ontario Provincial Junior 'A' Hockey League North Conference quarter-finals with a victory in Game 4. "I think we're showing them that we're playing with a sense of ur- gency, but we have to play with a lit- tle more," says Panthers' head coach John Winder. Winder emphasizes his underdog squad intends to take the remainder of the series "one game at a time", and won't go down without a fight on Wednesday evening. "The last time I looked at the standings, they have to win four games. We're not throwing in the towel by any means." The Pickering juniors are on the proverbial ropes after dropping Game 3 in the series 3-1 at Newmar- ket's Ray Twinney Sports Complex on Sunday night. Despite being overwhelmed on shots on goal by a 45-21 margin, and missing regulars Phil McIlhone, Paul Michael Rivest, Cory York and Blake Allen with in- juries, the Panthers nonetheless put in a strong overall effort. Pickering's inability to cash in on their scoring chances was the key in Sunday's loss, says Winder, despite yet another strong performance by starting goaltender Brian Scher- mele in the series. "We played well enough to deserve a better fate. We had three or four definite scoring chances that we didn't put the puck in the net... With any luck at all, we could have won." Winder noted that although New- market may have counted more shots in Sunday's contest, they had less quality scoring chances than the Panthers. But, the experience of the Newmarket roster allowed them to capitalize on their opportunities. Felicien second to Devers in New York PICKERING --Pickering's Perdita Feli- cien went head-to-head against a familiar rival at the prestigious 97th annual Mill- rose Games at Madison Square Garden in New York City last Friday. Defending world champion hurdler Feli- cien, 23, lined up against American and multiple Olympic medallist Gail Devers in the final of the women's 60-metre hurdles. It was the first time the two have been on the starting line since Felicien defeated Devers in the semi- final of the 100m hurdles at the world champi- onships in Paris last August. This time, however, Devers came out ahead, winning gold in a time of 7.76 seconds, fol- lowed by Felicien in 7.94. Last week, in her first indoor meet since winning the world hurdles crown, Fe- licien finished first at the Illinois Invitational Meet at the University of Illinois in a time of 7.99 seconds. Felicien also plans to compete at the Gaz de France meet on Feb. 28 in Lievin, France and finish her indoor season at the indoor world championships in Budapest, Hungary, March 5 to 7. In other news, Felicien is among the list of finalists for the 31st annual Canadian Sport Awards. Finn flys to double gold at legion meet AJAX -- A Pickering High School track athlete ran to a trio of medals at the an- nual Royal Canadian Legion Ontario Track and Field Indoor Championships at York University last weekend. Ryan Finn, running in the 17-and-under category, won the gold medal in the 800 metres and the 1,500 metres. He also took home a silver medal in the 400 metres. Finn competed for the Phoenix Tr ack and Field Club of Toronto at the meet. Meanwhile, Grade 9 student Evan Tsiopoulos won the bronze medal in the 800 metres in the 15-and- under age bracket. Select Food Products set the stage for the match-up by creeping into a tie for first place with the bankers through con- sistent team effort. At the opening tip, Se- lect Foods was favoured to win given the bankers' recent slump. However, the bankers' Kim Bourque had other ideas. In her most explosive game yet, Bourque sped up and down the court on every possession, leading all scorers with 16 points. In an ironic twist, Pickering's Collin Mitchell and Richard Hart met Mike Harris -- their former skip from the 1998 Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan -- for the Ontario Men's Curling Championship at Owen Sound's Harry Lumley Bayshore Centre on Sunday after- noon. Mitchell and Hart, now playing the third and second positions, respec- tively for the Glenn Howard rink, ended up on the short end of the broom in the final, however. With the Howard rink trailing by one with the hammer in the 10th end, both skip rocks rubbed guards, allowing Harris to pull out a 9-5 victory, thus earning a trip to the Nokia Brier in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in March. In another piece of irony, the Howard rink had defeated the Harris foursome twice leading up to the final, once in the preliminary round and also in the first playoff game. ••• One of two Annandale rinks ended up winners at the Ontario Curling As- sociation's (OCA) zone event in Sut- ton from Feb. 7 to 9. Ta ks golden at Brampton Cup AJAX — Two boxing brothers scored gold medals at the Bramp- ton Cup Amateur Boxing Tourna- ment, hosted by the Bramalea Box- ing Club, last weekend. Charlie Tak, 13, and his brother Peter Tak, 15, won gold in their re- spective weight divisions while rep- resenting the Ajax Boxing Club at the Brampton Cup, an annual event that attracts many of the finest novice and open class amateur box- ers from across Ontario and Que- bec. Headed by coaches Brad Gon- salvez, Blair Lafortune and Masood Raza, the Ajax club took one other fighter, Anthony Francis, 14, to the tournament, with Francis earning a silver medal. Charlie 'Chuck' Tak entered the ring against Mike Randazzo of the McGrory's Boxing Club, from Hamilton in the final of the 54-kilo- gram cadet 'B' novice category. Tak earned an easy decision to capture the gold. Charlie wasted no time and came on hard and fast in the first round, landing a barrage of left jabs fol- lowed by a devastating straight right-hand blow that knocked Ran- dazzo down. The referee adminis- tered a standing eight-count, but allowed Randazzo to continue. After the knockdown, Charlie kept Randazzo from scoring points by effectively jabbing and maintaining a tight defence. Charlie fought Michael Newman of the Bland's Boxing Club, from Crystal Beach, in his first bout, using the first round to feel out his opponent and establish his range. During the second round, Charlie put the pressure on, scoring many clean jabs and combinations. After the second round, Ajax cornerman Gonsalvez instructed the Ajax boxer to relax and focus on main- taining his lead on the scorecard. The cornerman from the Bland's Boxing Club, however, decided his fighter had endured enough and subsequently stopped the bout. Meanwhile, Peter Tak also earned gold in the 60-kilogram cadet 'C' novice division. Fighting Joseph Petahegoose of the KAYO Boxing Club from Chatham in the gold-medal final, Peter went right to work and, for the first two rounds, used all his punches to great effect to open up a commanding eight-point lead. Peter continued to score fast jabs in the third round. Midway through the final round, the cornerman from the KAYO Boxing Club threw in the towel to end the bout. In his first bout, Peter faced hometown fighter Zishan Khan of the Bramalea Boxing Club. The Ajax fighter dominated all three round by effectively scoring points and pushing Khan back on the scorecard. Peter used successful de- fensive moves and counter-punch- ing to accumulate his lead and win the fight going away. The Ajax Boxing Club's lightest fighter, Anthony 'G-Unit' Francis, of Pickering, showed his willingness to fight, even after he was forced to move up into the 50-kg weight class in the cadet 'C' novice category as his only opponent at 48 kg decided to pull out of the tournament. Francis advanced into the gold- medal match against Joe Beaupar- lant of the Border City Boxing Club from Windsor. Francis and Beau- parlant exchanged many hard blows as both showed an abun- dance of courage and bravery, but the Windsor fighter won a decision on points, giving Francis the silver medal. All three Ajax fighters, along with fellow fighter David 'Farooq'" Mo- hamed, are preparing to compete at the Ontario Winter Games Provin- cial Tournament in London next month. This tournament will deter- mine the Ontario Provincial cham- pions for fighters under age 17. The Backwoods Players present 'The Patchwork Quilt' on Feb. 13 to 14, at the Brougham Hall at 3545 Brock Rd. in Brougham, just in time for Valentine's Day. Samantha Williams, a Durham actress, takes the helm as director for the show. "I thought it was an interesting opportunity (to direct)," Ms. Williams said. "The play touched me when I read it... it's about an old woman who is betrayed by her own daughter. It's a bit of a tear- jerker." The play's described as a time- less tale of romance and ties of love that the years cannot break. The players are well known for their comedic nature, but have taken a different direction with this current play. Aside from choosing to direct the play, Ms. Williams also "cus- tomized" the production with her own vision. Rachel Lyman Field wrote the play originally in the early part of the 1900s. "I wrote a prologue into the play," she said. Williams added her own spin on the classic tale through music, adding she "went well be- yond the lines on the page." Nine actors and actresses, some of whom are making their acting debut, are involved in the current show. "Lots of our members (players) are not previously experienced ac- tors," she explained. "I approached some people to be in 'The Patch- work Quilt' through networking. I'd say about 50 per cent of our per- formers have an acting back- ground." Ms. Williams said the play has only one act, and runs for about 40 minutes. The Backwoods Players was cre- ated through the Pickering Muse- um Village. This is the second show for the group, out of the Brougham Hall. Doors are scheduled to open at 7:30 p.m. both nights, with dessert and coffee served at 8 p.m. The per- formance will follow.
