PICKERING –– TAntonia Chryssovergis’s Grade 8 class at St.Marguerite Bourgeoys Catholic School in Pickering did a little
shoveling at lunch time. The students decided to go out and shovel driveways and sidewalks to help seniors living nearby.
Kayla Richards, in front, piles up a big shovelful of snow as she clears a driveway.
Reactor work halted
By Keith Gilligan
Staff Writer
PICKERING –Refurbishing work
on two reactors at the Pickering
nuclear station has been sus-
pended so efforts can be focused
on Unit 1.
Ontario Power Generation
spokesman John Earl said
putting the focus on just one reac-
tor is consistent with what the
company learned while retro-
fitting Unit 4.
“A lesson we learned with Unit 4
is we have to have the design and
engineering work fully finished
before moving to the next steps,”
Mr. Earl said.
The refurbishing of the ‘A’ side
of the plant has been plagued by
cost overruns and scheduling de-
lays. The cost to do the work was
originally pegged at $800 million,
but a report by former federal
cabinet minister Jake Epp stated
it would cost between $3 billion
and $4 billion once all the work is
finished.
Large increases
recommended
for councillors,
chairman
By Carly Foster
Staff Writer
DURHAM –Regional councillors
could see their coffers grow by
$13 ,000 and the chairman’s by
$50,000, if staff-recommended pay
increases are approved.
The recommendations from
Durham’s commissioner of fi-
nance were unanimously ap-
proved at a finance and adminis-
tration committee Wednesday.
They must now receive the rub-
ber stamp at council Feb. 11.
The whopping rise in pay
comes from three separate re-
gional policies, said commission-
er Garth Johns.
Councillors have long enjoyed
one-third of their pay tax free,
something allowed under the Mu-
nicipal Act. To match other re-
gions, Durham is dropping this
by the end of the year.
“It puts everyone on the same
playing field... they’re paying
taxes the same as the rest of us
now,” Mr. Johns said.
That brings councillors pay up
to $34,130 from $27,264 and re-
gional chairman Roger Ander-
son’s pay to $135,305 from $101,113.
This ensures pay is now compara-
ble to compensate for increased
taxes, Mr. Johns said.
Second, council salaries are
being adjusted to put them in the
75th percentile compared to simi-
lar regions in the Golden Horse-
shoe, such as York and Waterloo.
That adds another $4,690 to
councillors’ pay and $11,345 to the
chairman’s.
“It doesn’t do anything except
put them in the ballpark of coun-
cillors in other regions,” Mr.
Johns said. “What we don’t want

Keeping the beat
PICKERING –– R.H. Cornish Public School Grade 5 student Rick
Gehring, of Port Perry, keeps the beat with the rest of the drum-
mers during a performance at Applecroft Public School in Ajax,
recently. He is a member of the Hand Drumming Club, made up
of 41 drummers, both teachers and students. Ron Cross from
Orion Drums in Pickering, teaches and leads the group.
Also, the first reactor was
scheduled to be back on
line in 2000, but wasn’t pro-
ducing any power until last
year.
As a result of the Epp re-
port, the provincial govern-
ment appointed former fed-
eral Liberal Finance Minis-
ter John Manley to look
into the situation and rec-
ommend whether work
should continue or the idle
reactors be mothballed.
Mr. Manley’s panel is
scheduled to release its re-
port in mid March and “we
want to give them the most
fulsome package of infor-
mation they have to make a
decision,” Mr. Earl said.
“It’s our desire to get the
most fulsome package to
Manley as they focus their
attention on Unit 1. We
want to get the information
ready as quick as possible.”
To focus on Unit 1
“means less work on Units 2
and 3,” he admitted.
“It helps us get an assess-
ment of design and engi-
neering work done so we
can get the information to
the Manley panel,” Mr. Earl
noted. “They’ll review it and
make a recommendation
on Pickering to the govern-
ment. We will give them the
information they need to
bring their report forward.”
The ‘A’ side reactors were
shutdown in late 1997 fol-
lowing a scathing report on
the performance of OPG’s
predecessor, Ontario
Hydro. In 1999, OPG sought
government approval to
restart the four reactors.
Few er workers are need-
ed to refurbish just one re-
actor, so there’s a “cost sav-
ings,” Mr. Earl said. “We can
decrease the number of
contracted staff with our
new focus on Unit 1.”
PowerSource Canada is a
contracting firm OPG has
retained to supply staff to
do the refurbishment.
“It’s a company we can go
to and say ‘we need exper-
tise in X and in Y.’ They’ll
go out and source X and Y.
They provide contracted
staff to Pickering,” Mr. Earl
said.
“Approximately 50 per
cent of contracted staff for
1, 2 and 3” are being let go.
“They’re not working on
the project, they’ll be let
go.”
Focus is now on Unit 1 reactor

Agency ‘relieved’
to get some good
news for once
By Carly Foster
Staff Writer
DURHAM –The Children’s Aid
Society is “relieved” the
Province has come through
with $5.2 million in extra fund-
ing.
“Not too many (good news
stories) come along in our in-
dustry, so it’s always good to
recognize them when they do,”
said James Dubray, executive
director of Durham CAS, this
week.
“I’m tremendously relieved
because it’s a validation of the
work we do.”
The Durham chapter re-
ceived a portion of the $64 mil-
lion given to CAS agencies
across Ontario to help with op-
erating costs.
The Province announced
Wednesday it will spend $1 bil-
lion on services for children
who need protection from
abuse or neglect.
The $5.2 million will largely
cover the organization’s deficit
for the 2003/2004 fiscal year
(which ends March 31), leaving
a shortfall of around $200,000,
Mr. Dubray said.
“We will still have to deal
with problems next year, as the
benchmarks within the fund-
ing formula do not reflect the
true costs of providing services
to children,” he said.
Despite higher boarding
costs and salaries, funding has
not increased, Mr. Dubray
said.
The society cares for more
than 2,000 children and around
3,500 to 4,000 families each
year.

Pickering’s
diversity
PICKERING –The residents of Pick-
ering are a diverse group of people
with different traditions and culture
to share.
Pickering’s diversity is being
showcased at the 2004 Heritage Day
Celebrations on Feb. 14 at the Pick-
ering Town Centre.
The annual event features perfor-
mances from different cultural
groups, as well as booths to share in-
formation about diversity of people
who make up Pickering.
“It’s a celebration of the heritage
that makes up this community,”
said Marisa Carpino, supervisor of
culture and recreation.
The Pickering Advisory Commit-
tee on Race Relations and Equity is
hosting the event.
“Pickering and Durham are one of
the more multicultural diverse com-
munities in the country,” said Ward
3 City Councillor David Pickles.
“People seem to enjoy getting to-
gether and learning about other cul-
tures.”
Coun. Pickles is the chair of the
race relations committee.
He enjoys attending the event.
“It’s always very interesting you
see new performances, new cos-
tumes and new people,” he said.
Performances include Greek
dancing, belly dancing and highland
dancing. Organizations on hand
with booths include Hispanic Cana-
dian Alliance of Durham, Durham
Tamil Association and Community
Justice Alternatives of Durham Re-
gion.
“It’s a nice cross section of the cul-
tural groups that exist in our com-
munity,” Ms. Carpino said.
The celebration gets under way at
11 a.m. and runs until 3 p.m.

Finally, council receives
an annual salary increase
equal to the one manage-
ment received the year
before. On April 1, council
members will receive an
additional 3 per cent in-
crease: councillors $1,164,
chairman $4,400.
The tax-free and 75th
percentile adjustments
are retroactive to Jan. 1.
Grand total: Council-
lors, just under $40,000
(plus local municipal
pay), chairman, $151,00.
Severance payments
are also increasing to
one month’s pay for
every year served to a
maximum 18 months
from a maximum of 12
months. Region benefit
plans are being extended
to cover anyone over 65-
years-old.
A monthly vehicle al-
lowance of $700 for the
chief administrative offi-
cer, Garry Cubitt, plus
$600 for commissioners
and senior staff will come
into effect April 1. This
will match practices in
many municipalities,
such as Brampton and
Ottawa.
Mr. Johns also recom-
mended changes to coun-
cillor pensions and har-
monizing salaries be-
tween local municipali-
ties and the Region.
“I put an awful lot of
time and energy into this,
so there’s nothing hidden
or suspect,” Mr. Johns
said. “We’re trying to be
transparent.
“There are no games.”

Three Pickering
men arrested,
neighbour’s 911
call tipped police
By Stephen Shaw
Staff Writer
DURHAM –Three Picker-
ing teens were charged
Thursday after a botched
home invasion in a Whitby
townhouse.
The attempted robbery
ended when police cor-
nered the suspects in the
home.
A family of five was
awakened just after mid-
night when three masked
intruders – at least one of
whom was armed with a
knife – kicked in the door of
their McQuay Boulevard
residence.
The trio demanded
drugs, ransacked the home
and roughed up a 19-year-
old man who lived in the
house with his parents and
two younger siblings, police
said.
The attack, however, was
foiled by a neighbour who
saw suspicious activity out-
side the home and called
911, alerting Durham Re-
gional Police.
Several squad cars were
dispatched and within a
few minutes the west-end
street was swarming with
officers.
“(The assailants) had
just started smacking
around the 19-year-old
male victim,” said Sergeant
Paul Malik, Durham Re-
gional Police spokesman.
The suspects panicked
at the unexpected police
presence and two ran out
of the residence and were
taken into custody by wait-
ing officers.
“One tried fleeing out the
front door and another
went out the back,” said
Sgt. Malik.
A Durham K-9 officer
and his dog searched the
townhome and flushed out
a third suspect, who was
found hiding in the base-
ment. The teenager suf-
fered minor bite wounds
during his arrest and was
treated at hospital.
Investigators, mean-
while, are trying to identify
two other suspects, who
police believe had been
waiting outside in two vehi-
cles and got away.
Drugs appeared to be
the motive for the robbery,
and the 19-year-old was the
apparent target, police
said.
The victim received
minor cuts but didn’t re-
quire hospital treatment.
His 51-year-old father was
shoved, police said, while
his 46-year-old mother and
two siblings, including a 12-
year-old sister, were not
hurt in the attack.
Andrew Dwayne Brown,
19, of Kingston Road,
Christopher Prince, 19, of
Kingston Road, and
Christopher Alva Morgon,
18, of Faylee Crescent, face
charges including robbery,
weapons dangerous and
wearing a disguise.
Mr. Brown is also
charged with assault caus-
ing bodily harm, posses-
sion of property obtained
by crime, break and enter,
obstruct police, 11 counts
of breach of probation, and
three counts of breach of
undertaking.
Mr. Morgon faces two ad-
ditional counts of breach of
probation.
The investigation is con-
tinuing and anyone with in-
formation is asked to call
Detective Sean Fitzgerald
at 905-579-1520 (or 1-888-
579-1520), ext. 1835, or

Hospital has
to open up
to dialogue
Residents deserve firm answers on
future of local health-care centre
It's time for some answers. Truth be told, that time was
many months ago, but we'll take some real dialogue on
Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital now as opposed to
later.
For too long now rumours have been swirling in the commu-
nity that everything from services, to staff, and expansion pro-
jects were on the chopping block.
All the while, hospital officials have offered little in the way of
reassurance to put the worst fears of so many at ease. In fact,
the pat answer has been that the corporation is examining all
services. Those responses just aren't cutting it anymore with
residents, including Yvonne Bosch and Dr. Romas Stas.
Ms. Bosch knows of what she speaks when it comes to our
community hospital. A longtime volunteer at the site, she's
been here longer than the hospital and her husband was a prac-
tising doctor at the facility until 1991.
Now, at Dr. Stas's urging that the public step up and save the
hospital, she's spearheading a petition that currently sits at
more than 6,500 signatures. In effect, it asks that services at the
Ajax hospital be maintained and enhanced. As for Dr. Stas, he's
watched the hospital evolve plenty over the last 30 years him-
self, and has witnessed enough cuts and decisions of late to
know things aren't headed in the right direction.
He began a tour of local councils this week with a stop in
Pickering, urging councillors to make a motion to support a
strong and vibrant facility. He'll do the same next week in Ajax.
And it's time for our local politicians to stand up and be
counted. Dr. Stas and Ms. Bosch represent a growing move-
ment in the community.
Our councillors and mayors must demand answers beyond
Rouge Valley's promises that a public consultation is on the
way. We need more information and this is the way to get it.
West Durham, which Rouge Valley serves, is growing so fast
that anything short of a full-service hospital just won't meet the
community needs. It's time a real commitment was made to the
Ajax facility by hospital officials, one that maintains services
and grows to meet our expanding communities.
It's time to end the uncertainty and guarantee a new secure
chapter in the hospital's history.
We need more
services, not less
To the editor:
As a parent living in the Ajax area, I
am writing to voice my concerns over
the possibility of closing the maternity,
neonatal and pediatric units at the
Rouge Valley Centenary site and consol-
idating the service with Rouge Valley's
Ajax facility. I understand there are bud-
get issues involved, but surely funds can
be found elsewhere.
The two facilities work hand-in-hand
for the people of Durham and eastern
Toronto. If a child born in Ajax required
specialized neonatal care, that child can
easily be transferred to the Centenary
site where they have newborn acute-care
services. Not only would this create ease
of transition from one hospital to anoth-
er, but also the child and family would
not have to face travelling long distances
to another hospital that provides this
service.
The Centenary site also provides pedi-
atric acute and rehabilitative health ser-
vices, which are not found here in Ajax
or elsewhere in the immediate area.
How could the administration consider
closing down such a valuable service? I
feel the board should become more col-
laborative and make this a centre of ex-
cellence by not removing the regional
pediatrics centre from Centenary. May I
suggest this issue be brought to the pub-
lic's attention? You need parents' input
to make such drastic changes.
We need more services in this growing
community, not less. Closing Centenary
reduces services, especially those need-
ed by kids with complicated conditions.

Do you know what
your kids are doing?
What's a community to do? It
seems barely a week goes
by now without some sort
of violent crime making the news.
Durham recorded its murder first
of the year recently, the stabbing of
a 24-year-old Oshawa man, report-
edly over a pack of cigarettes. And
that's only the start.
Two Pickering men received
minor stab wounds not too long ago
following a weekend confrontation
outside a Bayly Street convenience
store.
The summer seems to be espe-
cially hot, literally and figuratively,
as beatings, swarmings and general
acts of violence regularly make the
police sheets in Ajax and Pickering.
Just this week two men were sen-
tenced for their role in the summer
2001 brutal beating of a group of
teens sitting at a park picnic table
in Ajax.
Then there's Marlon Maragh. The
Scarborough man was sentenced to
18 y ears for putting four bullets in
the back of an Ajax man during, get
this, a pickup basketball game.
Get the idea? Things are getting
bad.
It used to be that this sort of stuff
was the legend of big cities gone
bad. But the last two or three years
there's been a noticeable increase in
crime, particularly involving youth,
spilling over from Toronto into
Pickering, Ajax and Durham Re-
gion as a whole.
So, back to the question: what's a
community to do?
Quite frankly, the argument from
some teens that our communities
aren't doing enough to keep them
occupied just doesn't cut it. Just be-
cause you're bored doesn't mean
you have to go out and beat some-
one within an inch of their life.
There are plenty of kids making a
positive difference by being re-
sourceful, entrepreneurial and com-
munity-minded. There's a lot to do
if you just look.
Yet the problems remain and
grow by the day.
And that's the hardest thing
about this. The problem is far from
unique to Ajax and Pickering, as
communities around the world
struggle with senseless violence. If
there were an easy answer it would
be bottled up and sold across the
globe.
However, here's betting much of
the problems stem from the home;
parents and families just not taking
an active enough role in their kids'
lives.
If every one of us started looking
within to understand what makes
our kids tick and where they come
and go, the rest of us wouldn't have
to constantly be looking out.

THE PEAK OF FRUSTRATION
HIT LONG BEFORE I SET
FOOT ON A BUS.
Planning a trip on public
transit from the region’s east to
west end was the hardest part
of the journey - a test of pa-
tience, Internet knowledge,
timing and humour.
It was a simple goal: get from
one end of Durham Region to
the other using only municipal
transit systems. Durham coun-
cil is considering adopting a re-
gional transit system and I
wanted to see why. Is it neces-
sary?
I chose to set out from the
easternmost point accessible
on public transit - Mearns Av-
enue in Bowmanville - and end
my journey at the most visible
point in west Durham - the
Pickering nuclear plant at
Montgomery Park and Brock
roads. But getting there on
paper turned out to be vastly
more difficult than it was on
wheels. Clarington’s transit
map, for example, is a jumble of
fonts and doesn’t fit on a com-
puter screen. And you cannot
get from Bowmanville to Cour-
tice on a municipal bus - you
must use GO Transit.
The Ajax-Pickering Transit
We b site doesn’t have route
maps. Whitby’s does, but it’s
unreadable when printed, and
is a very slow-loading PDF doc-
ument. The GO Transit Web
site was excellent, except that
it doesn’t provide times or list
all the stops along the route.
And the call centre can only
give estimates. Oshawa’s tran-
sit system - the largest in
Durham - was the easiest to
navigate but, like all the other
municipal transit Web sites, it
did not show any links between
cities. Because there was no in-
formation on the links, I had to
call each transit authority at
least four times while planning
my route. And while the knowl-
edge of the people on the other
end of the line was pretty reli-
able, the call centres shut down
at the same time every other
municipal department does:
between 4 and 4:30 p.m. So if
you’re living in Oshawa and
find out at 5 p.m. Tuesday you
have a job interview in Ajax
Wednesday morning, good luck
navigating Durham’s transit
We b sites without help. With
the exception of a few minor
mishaps, riding the buses
proved much easier - albeit
colder and longer.
Friday, Jan. 23,
8:25 a.m.
At Mearns Avenue and Hwy.
2 in Bowmanville, I’m in a col-
league’s car keeping warm
while waiting for the bus to ar-
rive. It does. Early. We frantical-
ly tail it, honking, waving,
shouting. I even get out three
times. Apparently, the driver
does not check right-side mir-
rors. By the time she sees me,
we’re at the stop where I’m sup-
posed to get off.
8:42 a.m.
Arrive at the 7-Eleven at Lib-
erty Street and Hwy. 2 after
walking 10 minutes in the -20
degree morning chill (Claring-
ton Transit said there wasn’t a
bus to take me to the intersec-
tion). The woman behind the
counter is sympathetic, letting
me loiter at the magazines after
purchasing my $3 GO bus tick-
et to Courtice. I buy a pocket
Durham Region map to trace
my route.
8:52 a.m.
I see a Clarington bus sail
down Liberty Street through
the intersection I was forced to
walk to.
8:54 a.m.
The GO bus arrives at the
frost-covered bus shelter. The
driver does not know where the
Courtice Community Centre is,
but a nice woman in a beige hat
sitting in the front row does. I
sit behind her. It’s intoxicating-
ly warm on the bus, which is
jammed with people travelling
the Hwy. 2 route, which goes all
the way to Scarborough.
9:02 a.m.
I get off GO with a girl who
works at the community centre.
She shows me where the stop is
- stark and unsheltered on the
side of Courtice Road, north of
Hwy. 2. I longingly watch cars
and vans drive by, heat rising
like waves off their roofs. I have
never felt such frigid cold, espe-
cially on my legs. Drivers smile
at me as I dance on the side of
the road trying to keep warm.
9:22 a.m.
Carol Clayson drives the
r umbling Oshawa bus that
pulls up. The doors open and I
f ling my arms wide. “You’re my
saviour!” I yell, paying my $2
fare. I meet Pauline Bela, who
works at the Ministry of Fi-
nance in downtown Oshawa.
She takes transit every day be-
cause it’s reliable, cheaper than
parking downtown, and goes
right to her office’s front door.
The bus weaves along Hwy. 2,
picking up students, seniors
and business people.
9:50 a.m.
I’m dropped off at the Os-
hawa Centre, waiting for the
Whitby transit bus. Inside the
bus shelter, interior designer
Paul Newman laughs when I
tell him how long it’s going to
take me to get to Pickering. “If
more people can get within our
borders...if it’s convenient, peo-
ple are going to use (public
transit),” he says. “If you want
people to leave their cars at
home, you have to make it
worthwhile.”
9:54 a.m.
The Whitby Transit bus pulls
in. My Oshawa transfer works
here. The walls and ceiling of
the bus are a faux marble. The
blue vinyl-covered seats, some
cracked in places, are rein-
forced with silver duct tape.
But it’s warm and quiet.
10:12 a.m.
Whitby’s transit system does-
n’t delve into Ajax’s borders, so
I must board another GO bus
for $3. Andrea Clarke tells me
she takes GO every day to
Scarborough Town Centre,
then on to York University,
where she’s studying business.
“If it’s not rush hour, though,
this bus only runs every hour or
so,” she says. “So it’s not as con-
venient.” I can’t help but think
of how much revenue Durham
is losing out on through GO
buses.
10:18 a.m.
I’m chatting with bus driver
Bill Kinmond, who’s been dri-
ving the Oshawa GO route for
28 years. Mr. Kinmond has bar-
becues for his passengers and
was invited to one rider’s wed-
ding. He asks if I’m going to
Harwood, and thinking he
means Harwood Avenue, where
I’m supposed to transfer to an
Ajax-Pickering bus, I say yes.
Unfortunately, he means the
Harwood Plaza, and I end up
inadvertently cheating. Having
to wait for that bus would have
added a good 40 minutes to my
journey.
10:28 a.m.
The Ajax-Pickering bus
leaves for the Ajax GO station.
It’s $1.85 for the trip, but that
will take me all the way to the
nuclear plant. Walt Smith is
across from me, balancing a
two-wheeled cart brimming
with groceries. “It does take a
long time, sometimes, that’s
the only drawback,” he said of
public transit, which he uses
every day. A car - with insur-
ance, monthly payments, re-
pairs - is too expensive for him
and his wife. Overall, he says,
the bus is very convenient and
friendly.
10:33 a.m.
Dropped at the Ajax GO sta-
tion, I sprint across the huge lot
to another bus that will take me
to the Pickering GO station.
Then, tragedy: I’ve lost one of
my fluffy white mittens.
10:37 a.m.
I stand the whole way to Pick-
ering, balancing precariously
behind the yellow danger line
while listening to the chatty dri-
ver. He has much to say about
unions, our newspaper, a re-
gionwide transit system and
bus driving in general, but he
doesn’t want to be quoted.
10:50 a.m.
Turns out the bus I’m on be-
comes the next bus I need, ac-
cording to chatty driver. That’s
good to know, because the tran-
sit people said I had to get on a
totally new bus. Because of the
stop-over I finally have time to
use the restroom. The wash-
rooms are disgusting and the
toilet paper does not want to
leave the roll.
10:56 a.m.
Back on the bus and I’m the
only passenger. It backtracks
across Bayly Road, down
Squires Beach Road, on to
McKay Road then straight over
the Montgomery Park Road.
The chatty driver wants to drop
me off at the taxi station on
Brock Road, but I want to be
dropped off at the stop I’d
planned would be the end of my
trip to get the full effect.
11:05 a.m.
I’m blinded by the brightness
of Brock and Montgomery Park
roads, where the wind turbine
swooshes in the distance. Dri-
vers in Ontario Power Genera-
tion trucks slow to stare at me
in my pink hat, as I run into the
intersection to take photos and
jump snow banks to get shots
of the street signs.
11:15 a.m.
A cab comes to whisk me
back to work. I laugh a bit hys-
terically when he asks why I
didn’t take public transit back
to the ‘This Week’ office in
southeast Oshawa. My feet are
frozen and I’m $9.85 poorer
from bus tickets. I stop com-
plaining when the taxi fare
clocks in at $36.
11:35 a.m.
Back at work, I’ve never been
so happy to see my little red
Fo rd Fo cus. Colleagues are
amazed to see me back already:
Some jokingly didn’t expect to
see my frozen face until the
next day.
Michael Lee-Chin
brought down
the house in
Durham visit
Jeff Hayward
Special to the News Advertiser
DURHAM –The presence
of a billionaire packed the
house and had people
fainting, literally.
Michael Lee-Chin, presi-
dent of the Berkshire
group, was on hand Feb. 3
to preach to aspiring in-
vestors. Mr. Lee-Chin
brought his solid wealth-
creation philosophy to a
large turnout at Le Gala in
Whitby.
“I’ve never spoken to a
crowd this size,” joked Mr.
Lee-Chin at the start of his
speech.
He said his successful
attitude started back in
high school, when he was
told “opportunity only
knocks once.
“When I heard that, I
thought... what if I’m not
there when it comes
knocking? For the next 14
years I didn’t eat or sleep,”
he said.
Mr. Lee Chin said he
came to realize opportuni-
ties happen every day. And
some of those opportuni-
ties, he said, are shrouded
in crisis.
“When a crisis happens,
people focus on the danger
of the situation,” he said.
“Crisis is a time of danger...
and opportunity.”
He talked about reces-
sions in the last 10 to 20
years and how investors
were afraid to put money
into the market because
things were uncertain. He
said it’s a good time to buy
into stocks and real estate
when the markets are
down.
The self-made billion-
aire, who is also chairman
and chief executive officer
of AIC Limited, which
owns Berkshire, laid out a
three-step process to
achieving success.
“First, identify a role
model,” he said. “Next, beg
the role model to teach you
the recipe (for success),
and lastly... follow the ad-
vice. Don’t stray from it.”
He also spoke of having
a “sound intellectual
framework” in which to
base business decisions
upon. Part of that strate-
gy, he added, is learning to
control your emotions.
“Have a value system
and don’t change it,” he
said. “It’s not easy to be fo-
cused, committed, and
courageous... Have faith.
Keep a positive attitude.”
He warned that most
mutual fund portfolios
consist of 150 or more busi-
nesses, with the portfolio
manager turning it over
every 18 months or so.
They then issue a T3 or T5
form to the investor which
requires the individual to
pay taxes on.
He said the strategy at
AIC is to keep portfolios
smaller, so the investor
and portfolio manager can
better understand who
they are dealing with.
“Ask yourself, what is my
portfolio manager doing
with my future?” he said.
“You can’t just say... here’s
my money, do something
with it.”
He said the biggest
problem today in the mar-
ket is a lack of trust and
confidence in large compa-
nies and their CEOs, using
the recent Parmalat scan-
dal as an example.
“It’s always great to have
someone like Michael Lee-
Chin, one of the richest
people in North America,
to speak on your behalf,”
said Steven Barnes,
branch manager of the
Whitby Berkshire group.
“About half the crowd that
showed up are new poten-
tial investors,” he added.
Mr. Barnes said they
had to turn people away
for the event, having 500
seats allocated for the pre-
sentation. About 600
showed up, and some were
required to stand for the
duration. The presenta-
tion had to be stopped mid
way, temporarily, as para-
medics tended to a guest
who had apparently faint-
ed.
A brief question and an-
swer period followed the
presentation, with a
chance for guests to mingle
with Berkshire advisers.

Pickering Square Dental Office welcomes a fresh face
to the staff, Dr. Chetna Wadhwa is the newest addition
to Dr. Marvin Lean’s dedicated dental health team.
She may look familiar to some of Dr. Lean’s patients
as she was a regular visitor at the office since October
2003, observing the needs of patients, as well as the
techniques of her fellow colleagues. Dr. Wadhwa
assumed her practice at the Pickering Square Dental
Office this month.
Dr. Wadhwa completed her undergraduate degree
from the University of Toronto and recently graduated
from Temple University, Sc hool of Dentistry. Her
dedication to dental health shows in her involvement
with the American Association of Women Dentists and
in her membership in various dentistry study clubs.
Because she is fluent in both English and Hindi, Dr.
Wadhwa is able to reach out to more patients in
helping them feel at home at Dr. Lean’s office. This is
in keeping with Dr. Lean’s belief that it is important for
patients to feel welcome while being treated at the
office.
The community has always been a top priority for Dr.
Lean and he has always made it a point to give back to
Pickering since he established his office here in 1987.
Over the years his community involvement has
included the establishment of a literacy book exchange
program as well as an annual scholarship program to
benefit students from both the separate and public
school board systems and sponsorship of sports
organizations and various other venues.
Dr. Wadhwa is also very committed to the
community, and that is also one of the reasons why Dr.
Lean recruited her. She supports breast cancer
awareness, the Special Olympics as well as community
oral health awareness campaigns. She will also join Dr.
Lean with his current community educational
presentations to Brownies, Scouts, pre- and school-aged
children, high school career days, and safety talks to
sports organizations and clubs.
Dr. L ean is confident that Dr. Wadhwa will be able
to provide outstanding service and exceptional results to
his patients, as well work with him to provide the
community with useful and educational resources. The
expansion of his staff is just another way to show his
appreciation and dedication to his faithful patients.

If you or someone you care about requires dentures, or
if you wear dentures and are experiencing problems, you
should see a denturist for help.
Denturists study the clinical and technical aspects of
removable dentures and general health for a period of
three years, lo nger than any other health-care
practitioner. The College of Denturists of Ontario
acknowledges that denturists are “Denture Specialists”.
Anyone can consult a denturist without a referral from
another health-care professional. Dentur ists provide
the most cost and time effective denture treatment.
Most denturists’ laboratory work is performed on the
premises by the denturist who sees you. This ensures
the quality of care is consistent and personal.
Your denturist is able to provide you with the
professional advice needed prior to choosing the
denture that best suits your lifestyle. The importance of
a thorough consultation and examination with your
denturist prior to any treatment cannot be emphasized
enough. This appointment gives you the opportunity to
express your concerns and desires for your new dentures.
It also allows the denturist the opportunity to assess the
oral conditions present and address your needs and
expectations.
A denturist can restore an existing broken or cracked
denture to its original state. Repairs may be required
when breakage or chipping occurs, when one or more
teeth need to be added to an existing denture (due to
tooth extraction), or because of wear and tear. Most
repairs can easily be done in one day. If your denture
requires a repair, it may be indicative of underlying
problems, inc luding age of the denture, worn teeth, or
poor fit. Your denturist is the professional who can best
explain how to prevent denture breakage from
occurring.
If your dentures are more than five years old, make an
appointment to talk with your denturist. You can
improve your looks, self-confidence and possibly your
health with quality replacement dentures.
Courtesy of The Deegan Denture Clinic, family
operated for 25 years.
Why choose a denture specialist?
Your denturist is able to provide you
with the professional advice needed prior
to choosing the denture that best suits
your lifestyle.

Can Canadians silence
the “silent killer”?
That’s how high blood
pressure has been described,
and according to the heart and
Stroke Foundation, it can dou-
ble or even triple your risk of
heart disease and stroke.
Research is the key to deepen-
ing the understanding of high
blood pressure and finding
new, “made-in-Canada” treat-
ment strategies, says the
Foundation, which is why it
has awarded $6.4 million to
blood pressure related grants
over the next four years.
As many as one in five
Canadians – and about half of
people over 65 – have high
blood pressure. According to a
recent Heart and Stroke
Foundation survey, three-quar-
ters of people polled knew that
high blood pressure is a warn-
ing of other diseases. Yet
slightly less than half of
adult Canadians under-
stand that medication can
usually control high blood
pressure. And only a quar-
ter know high blood pres-
sure can sometimes be
controlled by lifestyle
changes without medica-
tion.
“In fact, by taking
action you can keep your
blood pressure in a healthy
range,” says Dr. Anthony
Graham, spokesperson,
Heart and Stroke
Foundation. “The good
news is that with proper
treatment to control high
blood pressure, heart dis-
ease and stroke risk can be
reduced by as much as 70%.”
The “silent killer” profile
- The muscles that line the
walls of our blood vessels reg-
ulate blood flow and its pres-
sure. When these muscles con-
tract, blood pressure rises,
because the same amount
of blood has to flow
through a narrower space.
Blood pressure changes
throughout the day to
meet the body’s demands
for blood. But in some
people, their blood pres-
sure remains consistently
higher than it should.
Over time, that excess
pressure damages the
blood vessels and causes
additional complications.
The only way to
know if you have high
blood pressure is to get it
checked by a healthcare
professional at least once
every two years. You can
also visit www.heartand-
stroke.ca/bloodpressure to
take a risk assessment test for
heart disease and stroke. You’ll
get a personal risk profile and
a customized blood pressure
action plan. Here’s what you
can do to reduce your blood
pressure:
• Maintain a healthy
weight. If you’re over-
weight (excessive weight
is a particular risk if it’s
stored around the
abdomen), losing even a
modest amount can help
lower your blood pres-
sure.
• Reduce the fat and
salt in your diet. Try to
lessen your consumption
of foods with added salt.
Many convenience and
snack foods, smoked,
salted, cured or canned
meats and fish are high in
salt.
• Eat potassium-rich
foods. While sodium
tends to raise blood pres-
sure, potassium helps
bring it down. Good
sources of potassium
include all fruits and veg-
etables, especially
bananas, oranges, mel-
ons, kiwi fruit and toma-
toes.
• Become smoke-free.
Smoking adds to the
buildup of plaque in your
arteries and nicotine rais-
es your blood pressure. At
least one-quarter of the
deaths in Canada from
heart attacks and
strokes are due to smok-
ing.
•Get physically
active. Check with your
doctor first if you haven’t
been active for a while.
•Limit alcohol intake
to no more than two

Tw o schools asking
for changes would set
precedent trustee says
By Mike Ruta
Staff Writer
DURHAM –Next month, public
school board trustees will consider
scrapping all custodial twinning as-
signments in local schools.
The Durham District School
Board’s twinned schools share a
daytime custodian, meaning they
don’t have a full-time custodian on
site during the day. The practice
was introduced a decade ago to save
money in the board’s facilities bud-
get. Currently, 16 schools share
eight daytime custodians while
three others share a single staff
member.
Facilities superintendent Jack
Massie prepared a report to
trustees on twinning after school
council chairmen at Prince Albert
and R. H. Cornish public schools in
Scugog complained their schools
weren’t getting enough custodial
hours. Scugog Trustee Steve Mar-
tin, at the Feb. 2 standing commit-
tee, asked that Cornish receive a
full-time, day staff member and that
Prince Albert receive four day and
eight night time custodial hours.
“Anything can be done,” Mr.
Massie responded. “Our belief is if
we un-twin Cornish and Prince Al-
bert, we un-twin all assignments.”
Oshawa Trustee Susan Shetler
proposed a friendly amendment
that all twinning be eliminated.
Meeting chairman and Oshawa
Trustee, Kathleen Hopper, however,
ruled it was not so friendly.
Instead, trustees voted 7-4 in
favour of Whitby Trustee John Dol-
stra’s motion to defer the issue until
next month. Trustee Dolstra ques-
tioned why the Port Perry schools
couldn’t be dealt with on their own,
arguing it appears no one else has
come forward to complain about
custodial time.
Mr. Massie replied he had heard
from other school communities, and
that staff believes it’s an all-or-noth-
ing issue.
“As soon as (they) recognize there
is an opportunity for the school
communities to have a full-time cus-
todian, they will come forward,” he
said.
Trustee Dolstra said in that case
the issue should be deferred until
Mr. Massie can provide another re-
port on the issue so trustees can
“deal with all at the same time.”
Board chairman Elizabeth Roy
was against the delay. She disputed
a claim made by the Port Perry
school council chairman at a previ-
ous meeting, that the issue was one
of health and safety.
Ajax Wards 3 & 4 Trustee Lisa Hill
reasoned that trustees deal with in-
dividual school situations in the ac-
commodation plan and should be
able to do so in this case as well.
Pickering Trustee Sherry Croteau
didn’t want trustees to become “too
bureaucratic” by prolonging the de-
bate.
“I think that this has gone around
long enough,” she said, adding that
if other schools come along in the
future, so be it.
But, Oshawa Trustee Michael
Barrett said it would be unrealistic
for trustees to consider the Port
Perry schools in isolation.
Trustee Martin agreed the issue
was bigger than the two schools, but
maintained trustees could address
the issue at the Scugog schools.
“I think we can deal with a situa-
tion when it’s presented by two SCC
chairmen,” he said.
“If we start here, we’re opening
the door for all,” said Trustee
Shetler. “This is an issue we can’t
defer.”
As for the $300,000 Mr. Massie es-
timates it would cost to scrap all
twinning assignments, Trustee
Shetler described it as “a drop in the
bucket.”
“$300,000 is not a drop in the
bucket as far as I’m concerned,”
replied Trustee Dolstra.
After the deferral motion passed,
Trustee Shetler gave notice she
would introduce a motion to un-
twin all schools at the Feb. 16 board
meeting. Trustees will discuss the
un-twinning motion at the March 22
board meeting.

Wa t ch for Axemen,
Panthers updates
Game 3 today
in Newmarket
PICKERING — The Pickering
Boyer Pontiac Panthers are al-
ready behind the eight ball in
their opening playoff series.
The Pickering juniors dropped
the opener of its OHA Ontario
Provincial Junior 'A' Hockey
League North Conference playoff
series in Newmarket Thursday,
6-3 to the Hurricanes.
The Panthers played the Hur-
ricanes at the Pickering Recre-
ation Complex on Friday night,
with the result unavailable at
press time. Game 3 in the best-
of-seven series is today (Sunday)
at Newmarket's Ray Twinney
Recreation Complex at 7:30 p.m.
Four consecutive goals, includ-
ing two late in the first period
and two early in the second, left
the Panthers trailing 4-1. Picker-
ing, however, responded with a
power-play marker before the
end of the second. The Panthers
got one more back to close the
gap to within one goal early in
the third. However, later in the
frame, Newmarket regained its
two-goal advantage and scored
its final goal into an empty Pick-
ering net with nine seconds re-
maining.
The Panthers goals all came
on the power play. Richard
Schofield netted the first goal of
the game. Derek Lynden scored
in the second period, while Pick-
ering's leading goal scorer Jere-
my Whelan, scored in the third
stanza. Phil McIlhone added two
assists.
Two of the six Newmarket
goals came on the power play.
Bryan Schermele took the loss
in goal for Pickering.

Dunbarton High
drops close series
to Courtice
DURHAM — It was a series that
was too close to call. But, unfor-
tunately for the Dunbarton High
School Spartans, their post-sea-
son hockey dreams came to an
abrupt end in Bowmanville on
Thursday afternoon.
The Spartans were on the out-
side looking in after Courtice
Secondary School won the sec-
ond and final game of the two-
game-total-points series 3-2 in
Lake Ontario Secondary School
Athletics (LOSSA) senior boys'
hockey action.
"It was a very even game; it
could have gone either way, but
we couldn't get the goal we need-
ed," says Dunbarton coach Bill
Dalliday.
Andrew Hackett and Chris
Thorpe scored for Dunbarton.
The series opened at Don Beer
Arena on Tuesday afternoon,
with the game ending in a 3-3
draw. Courtice scored the tieing
goal with two seconds remaining.
Eight teams — including three
local squads — remain in the
LOSSA 'AAA' playoffs. Defend-
ing champion Pickering remains
alive and well, while St. Mary,
Anderson and Eastdale have
emerged as the most likely con-
tenders to dethrone the Trojans.
Pickering had little in the way
of resistance from St. Stephen's,
winning by scores of 12-4 and 8-5
in the two-game-total-point pre-
liminary round.
St. Mary, runner-up a year ago
and two points ahead of Picker-
ing atop the west division this
season, ousted Austin after wins
of 5-3 and 4-1. If St. Mary and
Pickering continue to win, they
would once again hook up in the
final.
But Anderson, the top team in
the east this season, and East-
dale, which would have won that
honour if not for forfeiting three
wins due to a clerical error, will
certainly have something to say
about it.
Anderson easily swept aside
Richardson, winning 5-1 and 9-1,
while Eastdale took its frustra-
tion out on All Saints, prevailing
5-2 and 7-1.
In the other preliminary
rounds: Ajax got past Henry
Street (4-3, 5-3); McLaughlin
downed Pine Ridge (6-2, 3-6, OT
goal) and Uxbridge beat Port
Perry (4-0, 3-2).
Best-of-three quarterfinals
begin this week, with St. Mary
facing Ajax, Eastdale meeting
McL aughlin (the lone team to
beat Eastdale during the sea-
son), Pickering up against Cour-
tice, and Anderson squaring off
with Uxbridge.
Committee forming
to help make
teams’ trip to city
a success
PICKERING — Plans are starting
to come together to bring two
youth soccer teams from
Nunavut to Pickering in late May
for five days.
But, Pickering Soccer Club
president Terry Gariba and
Randy Bulmer are looking for in-
terested volunteers to help with
the planning, billeting and fund-
raising to bring the teams from
the far north to the city.
"We're trying to put a commit-
tee together," says Bulmer, who
spearheaded an equipment
drive to send used soccer items
to Nunavut last fall. "We're trying
to get the kids here and do
things for them when they get
here."
Bulmer says the idea for the
exchange sprang from talking to
Travis Hoffe from the Nunavut
Soccer Association, who's also a
physical education teacher and
soccer coach at Inuksuk High
School in Iqaluit. From that ini-
tial conversation, Hoffe has
begun fund-raising for the trip,
which will bring 21 boys (an
under-14 and an under-16 team)
and two coaches to Pickering for
the exchange, expected to begin
on May 21.
The cost of the trip, however,
is enormous, with airfare at
about $20,000 to bring the team
to southern Ontario. The
Nunavut teams, says Bulmer,
have already raised half that
total.
Gariba says the Pickering Soc-
cer Club has wholeheartedly em-
braced the idea of having the
Nunavut youths come for the
five-day stay. While they're here,
they'll play some exhibition
games as well as being involved
in some developmental clinics
with some of the PSC coaches.
Depending on the weather,
the games will be played either
indoors or outdoors. If they're
played outdoors, it will be a first
for the Nunavut teams as they
haven't ever played soccer out-
doors before.
So far, he has talked to native
groups in Toronto about becom-
ing involved in the visit, as well
he has discussed the venture
with Mayor Dave Ryan in order
to get the City's support.
As well, Gariba notes two of
the PSC's major suppliers -- The
Soccer Connection and Domin-
ion Knitting -- have agreed to
furnish the Nunavut teams with
uniforms and shoes for their
visit.
While some of the billeting has
been arranged, Gariba says the
PSC is still looking for more fam-
ilies to take in the visiting play-
ers, who will be placed two per
family.
The visit by the Nunavut
teams, says Gariba, will be one
aspect of the PSC's 20th an-
niversary celebrations in 2004.
If you can help, call the PSC at
905-831-9803 or via e-mail at
mainoffice@pickeringsoccer.ca.

No, I am not talking about doing things around the house, I am
talking about getting your finances in order. In the vast majority of
cases, a mortgage or loan is approved or declined based on a person’s
credit score. This is primarily determined by payment history on your
revolving credit (IE: credit cards) If you miss a payment, this will
haunt you for a minimum of one year. A major misconception is that if
you get behind and then catch up, everything is fine, this is not the case.
Your credit report will show these missed payments for years to come. One of the worst things a person can
do, is have your balance exceed your credit limit. Another misconception is that your mortgage payment his-
tory will show on your credit report. First mortgage payment history has never been included on your bureau.
Although lending rates are still relatively low, they will increase this year, probably in the 3/4% to 1%
range. The solution is to consolidate your debts now. Lenders are always more aggressive in the first quar-
ter than any other time of the year. A good consolidation can save thousands of dollars in payments over a
year.
WHY CENTRAL FUNDING GROUP?
Fast Professional service, with your best interest being our primary concern. The best available rates
in the market place. (generally 1 1/4% below posted market rates) First and second mortgages available to
100% of current market value, with good income and credit history. Consolidations have always been a
specialty. Private mortgages are available at very competitive rates and terms.

Pickering novices
win two, lose one
in Waterloo
PICKERING —The Pickering Blizzard
novice 'C' ringette team won two of three
contests, but still came up short of a
berth in the final at the recent Waterloo
Ringette Tournament.
Pickering faced Paris in Game 1, skat-
ing to an 11-5 victory. Emily Forbes led
the attack with three goals and two as-
sists. Other offensive leaders were Lind-
sey Shaver with five assists and Kayla
Logan with three goals. Avery Darrah
and Jessica Brown also scored. Emily
Jesson was stellar in net, aided by a
strong defence led by Michelle McPher-
son.
Pickering pulled a stunning 8-7 upset
victory over a strong Kitchener team in
the second game.
Kitchener led 5-2 after the first period,
but Pickering used exceptional team-
work and skill to post the come-from-be-
hind victory. Rachel Jewson, Elizabeth
Carmichael and Emily Forbes all record-
ed two goals apiece. Kaitlin Brown and
Amanda Bell helped out with two as-
sists each. Jessica Williams was solid in
net.
The Blizzard had to win the third
game in order to advance to the final.
The Pickering novices, however, were
edged by an undefeated Waterloo team

the first period. Pickering came back in
the second period with three goals by
Bell, assisted by Kristyn Bradley. In an
exciting period of ringette, Waterloo
