Organic waste in Region hands Pickering council votes to negotiate transfer of garbage responsibility By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING –Organic waste pick- up for every household in Picker- ing is almost a reality. Council voted unanimously Monday night to initiate talks with Durham Region to transfer the responsibility of waste collec- tion, which would include the Re- gion extending organic waste col- lection to the entire City. “The importance of this pro- gram is ripe now for the picking and we need to work with our CAO and the Region’s. We need to move ahead with this,” said Ward 3 Regional Councillor Rick John- son. Coun. Johnson has been trying to bring organic collection to the City for at least a decade. In 2001 a pilot project began in Amberlea, which has proven so successful at waste diversion it was extended several times and is still ongoing. Based on the success of the Amberlea program, council de- cided in October to extend organ- ic collection throughout Picker- ing. But, the City wouldn’t have the funds available to do that for many years. “It may be some time before we can implement this at the local Business plan needed to ensure Province’s backing By Mike Ruta Staff Writer DURHAM –Pending receipt of “an appropriate, results-oriented business plan” from the Universi- ty of Ontario Institute of Technol- ogy, the Province confirmed yes- terday it would back the institu- tion’s $190-million borrowing plan. Kevin Costante, the deputy minister of training, colleges and universities, in a Thursday letter to UOIT president Gary Polon- sky, says the government “looks forward to working together to ensure the long-term success of UOIT. “Of that $190 million, the gov- ernment has already provided ap- provals... to enable UOIT to ob- tain up to $100 million in interim financing,” Mr. Costante states. “This has allowed construction of UOIT’s academic buildings and new library to proceed without in- terruption.” When the Province receives the plan, it is prepared to allow UOIT to borrow the remaining $90 mil- lion, he says. The letter all but quelled specu- lation that UOIT would not re- ceive the go-ahead to borrow the money, needed to complete three new buildings opening this fall. An unnamed source, quoted in the Toronto Star yesterday, cast a shroud of uncertainty over the fate of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT). The source was quoted as saying the government would tell UOIT officials at a Thursday meeting it would not sign off on the loans. Ministry spokesman Dave Ross suggests the meeting was not so dramatic. ✦See Meeting page 4 ✦See Region page 2 Full speed ahead for UOIT P PAGE 2 NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, February 6, 2004 www.durhamregion.com HOURS Mon. - Wed. 10-6 Thurs. - Fri. 10-9 Sat. 10-6 Sun. 11-4 rrs TM FINANCING ACCEPTED PHONE ORDERS ACCEPTED 40 FACTORY OUTLETS ACROSS ONTARIO INCLUDING... We have to do this organic program... We need to get this done,” said Ward 2 Regional Councillor Mark Holland. The Region is already responsi- ble for waste disposal. There aren’t many hurdles to transfer- ring Pickering’s current collection as the City has a contract with a waste disposal company, which the Region would just take over. The Region, however, has a waste reserve fund that can be used to cover the cost of the or- ganic waste bins and education to implement the program. The mu- nicipalities in north Durham, where the Region is responsible for collection, have already bene- fited from the reserve fund in get- ting organic collection up and running. Many councillors cited efficiencies as another benefit for transferring the responsibility. “It’s well past time for us to ex- pand our collection of organics,” said Ward 3 City Councillor David Pickles. The large snow sculp- tures are just one of the many attractions drawing residents out of their warm houses and visitors to the tiny hamlet during the Claremont Winter Carni- val. The annual event kicks off Feb. 6 and runs until Feb. 14. Luisa Santacroce is one of the event’s co-chairmen. “It’s a great week with a lot of community spirit,” she said. Events include a family toboggan day Feb. 7, movie night Feb. 11, a family skate night Feb. 13 and a ton of events to wrap things up Feb. 14. The last day starts with the parade, which gets under way at 11 a.m., fol- lowed by events in the park including face painting, snowmobile rides, and new this year, dog-sled rides. The day ends with the rodeo-themed Trapper’s Ball at the Community Hall at 8 p.m. “It brings the people of Claremont together in a celebration of community and friendship,” Ms. San- tacroce said of the festivi- ties. This is the second year she has been involved with the carnival, but she has gone every one of the five years she has lived in Clare- mont. “If you live here, you can’t miss it,” she said. Her favourite part of the week isn’t any of the many events, but rather the spir- it of the week. “My favourite thing is seeing everybody come out and talking to everyone and meeting everyone,” she said. The countless volunteers have been busy getting everything prepared and the weather has been co- operating to make the hamlet ready for a winter carnival. “The sculptures will be great this year because of all the snow,” Ms. San- tacroce said. “When you drive around Claremont on a good year you’ll see tons of them on people’s lawns.” Snow show set to go This Week ● Canadian Statesman ● NEWS ADVERTISER ● Times-Journal ● durhamregion.com News from all over Durham Region online at durhamregion.com “This is just a follow-up meet- ing to what they spoke about and agreed to last week,” he said in an interview. Of the letter from Mr. Costante, Mr. Ross said the Province was willing to share it with “those who were interested.” He said it would not be posted on the ministry We b site. Mr. Polonsky described the meeting at Queen’s Park as “a reaffirmation of support” for UOIT. At it, he asked the officials to do something to counter the leak. “I made it clear that whoever is doing this leaking is hurting us because it’s creating uncertainty at the very moment we’re trying to recruit top students and top faculty,” he says. Mr. Polonsky, over the last two days, met with UOIT students to assure them that the institution’s expansion is proceeding “full- steam ahead.” “The bottom line is that the (Liberal) government has stated and re-stated that it will honour the commitment of the previous government,” he says. While the business plan was submitted almost a month ago, Mr. Polonsky says government of- ficials yesterday asked for more information related to the engi- neering program, which UOIT would provide on Monday. He ex- pects the Province to sign off on the plan by the end of this month at the latest, and possibly within a week or two, clearing the way for the UOIT to borrow the rest. He received a letter from Pre- mier Dalton McGuinty yesterday in which the Liberal leader says, “I look forward to an ongoing col- laboration and wish you contin- ued success.” A/P PAGE 4 NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, February 6, 2004 www.durhamregion.com The Oshawa General Hospital Foundation $20,000 Shopping Spree! At the wrap-up gala on Saturday, the organiza- tion announced it had col- lected $1,629,482 in the 2003 fund-raising cam- paign, surpassing the tar- get of $1.6 million, Edna Klazek says. About 240 people at- tended the event, held at the Carruthers Creek Golf Centre. The executive director adds the UW is under- standably pleased with the results. “Absolutely. We went over our goal for the fourth year in a row,” she says. Ms. Klazek points to the efforts of Val Marshall, the 2003 fund-raising cam- paign chairman. “Val’s a wonderful leader. She inspired and worked with out largest campaign team ever. She let people know of the value the United Way adds to the community,” Ms. Klazek says. Also helping reach the goal were “a couple of un- expected personal dona- tions. Toronto also went over its goal and that as- sisted us as well. We par- ticipate in (the Toronto campaign) as well,” Ms. Klazek adds. Next, the organization will conduct an analysis of the campaign. She re- ferred to the analysis as SWOT - strengths, weak- nesses, opportunities and threats. “We’ll use the informa- tion to get a start to look at strategies for market- ing the campaign in 2004.” Also announced on Sat- urday was the appoint- ment of Pat O’Brien as the campaign chairman for 2004. He retired from On- tario Power Generation just before Christmas, where he had been the manager of public rela- tions at the Pickering nu- clear station. “We’re thrilled to have him,” Ms. Klazek says. Durham Regional Police note the woman reported the cards stolen on Sun- day, Jan 25 while she was at the Dagmar Ski Resort on Lakeridge Road in Uxbridge. She had been at the ski hill at 10 a.m. and when the woman returned home at 4:30 p.m., her credit card company called her about some purchases. It was then the woman dis- covered her cards had been stolen. Two of the three cards were used at a Canadian Tire Store and a depart- ment store in Niagara Falls, and at a Pickering restaurant. Investigators were able to get a photo of the male suspects who used the cards in Niagara Falls. One suspect is heavy set with glasses and dark hair, while the other is slimmer, has a dark complexion with a tuque. Photographs of the sus- pects can be seen on the Durham police Web site at www.drps.ca, under Media Releases. Police ask the public to look at the photos and contact them with any in- formation they may have. Suspects sought in credit card theft at ski hill Premier must now commit to UOIT Liberals shouldn’t interfere in process that’s already well under way There was a lot of talk about UOIT emanating from Queen’s Park this week, but oddly, there was nothing of real substance from the Premier. Will the University of Ontario Institute of Technology get the loan guarantees it requires to expand? Will the school get the Province’s help to meet tremendous demand from incoming students? Will Dalton McGuinty’s Liberals, now in perpetual spending-review mode, play partisan politics and stop the f ledgling university cold in its tracks? Sources have been eagerly feeding Toronto Star reporters stories about confusion at Queen’s Park over UOIT. The ac- counts claimed the Liberals would not agree to fund a universi- ty they believed was Tory-created and was unnecessary in uni- versity-rich Ontario. Such discussions were nowhere in sight from the time then Minister of Finance Jim Flaherty announced UOIT’s creation in May 2001 to the Liberal election in October 2003. During all that time, numerous decisions were made to get UOIT off the ground, to purchase land, to get buildings constructed, to hire staff, to prepare the school for the inaugural class of September 2003. If the Liberals were opposed to the creation of UOIT and its expansion into a full-fledged university, they had little to say on the record during that two-and-a-half year stretch. Only since coming to power and crying poor over a deficit predicted months before their election have the Liberals taken a view toward cutting back on UOIT. At least that’s what some of these sources, which have yet to be fully contradicted by Pre- mier McGuinty, have said. The Premier wrote a lukewarm letter to UOIT president Gary Polonsky on Jan. 30, stating: “I look forward to an ongoing col- laboration and wish you continued success.” The words are cor- dial, but hardly amount to a guarantee of provincial funding. The groundwork and plans have been painstakingly laid. Much of the work at UOIT has already been done. The Liberals should not interfere in a process that was put in place years be- fore they were elected. Let UOIT grow and thrive and take its place as an institute of higher learning that can serve the rapid- ly growing population of Durham and Ontario. When the Lib- erals rode into office, education was their mantra. Now, Durham needs Dalton McGuinty to affirm UOIT’s future. Conservatives still not ready to challenge To the editor: In the final days of 2003, the Progres- sive Conservative and Alliance parties merged into the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC). Unfortunately, this merger was not supported 100 per cent, as there were a few old-timers who believe the glory days of the Progressive Conservatives would return, without merging with the Al- liance Party. In my view, that would only be possible if a steep decline of the Lib- eral Party was just around the corner. For the new Conservative Party to be serious in the coming spring election, it must find a new leader and it must re- build the integrity of the Conservatives because the formula for winning re- volves around the meaning of the word integrity. In a few words, it means saying and doing the right thing. When I look back over the last 20 years, our Conservative leaders were great in saying and promising the right thing, but doing the right thing was quite often not on their agenda. That is why they lost to the Liberals in the early 1990s and why the Ontario Conservatives lost in the fall of 2003, also to the Liberals. In my view, it will not make much dif- ference if the new leader of the party is Stephen Harper, Tony Clement or Be- linda Stronach, because it will take a lot of time and good performances to change the image of the Conservatives from negative to positive. A leadership change alone, will not eliminate a negative image. Some days I get him; other days he gets me. Check that — most days he gets me. It’s definitely a game to him, a sick test of wills. And, he plays to win. He’s every bit a masochist — he doesn’t mind getting run over; in truth, he enjoys it. Like a punch-drunk boxer, he in- vites you to take a run at him. He double-dog dares you to give him your best shot. It’s almost a pleasurable experi- ence for my big, wide friend as he mocks me every morning, putting his expanse in front of me, just wait- ing and, dare I say it, wanting me to roll over him. Most days, I’m alert, and I deftly avoid him. Other days, I’m preoccupied, I stray slightly off course and, oops, it’s as if he steps out of nowhere and, thud, I roll right on top of him. Damn. It’s not like I mean to hit him, I don’t. In fact, my car definite- ly hates it when I do. But, every now and then, it’s like he reaches out and steps squarely in front of me. And, when I look in my rear-view mirror, it’s as if I can almost see him smile and snicker with glee, sitting in the middle of the road, waiting for the next unsuspecting com- muter to partake in his little, de- mented game. I’m referring to my favourite pot- hole, we’ll call him Sneaky Pete. He’s a big fella who has made his home in the middle westbound lane, just before the traffic lights at Hwy. 2, just east of Lakeridge Road. Pete’s friends in the vicinity, it seems, have been snuffed out by those big, bad hombres from the Durham Region works depart- ment, but not Pete. He’s a survivor. He’s still there, every day, and he’s growing more menacing with each passing hour. I’m sure those hard-working lads at the works department have their reasons why my sly friend contin- ues to flourish. Surely, his demise is just a matter of time. The crews must be waiting for the spring pot- hole season before arriving with their hot mix to put my infamous chum permanently out of business. But, the fact is Pete’s been hang- ing around this intersection a long time. This big-and-getting-bigger crack in the asphalt is akin to a mu- tated virus, immune to every incur- sion by those hard-working crews. In the meantime, the elusive Pete will be waiting, watching and at the ready to put your automobile through highway hell. My advice? Be aware. Be very aware of Sneaky Pete. The hole truth about our local roads Editorials &Opinions FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2004 ✦ News Advertiser ✦ DAVID STELL, NEWS EDITOR, 905-683-5110 EXT. 249 Editorial Letters to the Editor Al Rivett S t a f f E d i t o r Pair sentenced to eight months for roles in gang attacks in Ajax By Stephen Shaw Staff Writer WHITBY –A judge has jailed two Ajax men for eight months for their roles in a vicious swarming in which the teenage victims were robbed and beaten for "the sheer enjoyment." Bryan Frederick Styles, 23, and Hodari Harris John- son, 21, were found guilty of aggravated assault, assault causing bodily harm, multi- ple robbery counts and wearing a disguise for the Aug. 16, 2001, attacks on several teens. Court heard the pair was among a brazen gang of ap- proximately 20 young men who, brandishing tree branches, surrounded the six victims who were sitting at a picnic bench in the park adjacent to Lakeside Public School. Justice Robert Clark of Superior Court said Mon- day the assailants "system- atically" robbed their com- pliant victims of wallets, watches, chains and other personal belongings before brutally beating them. The assaults that fol- lowed the robberies were in- flicted "for no other reason than the sheer enjoyment," said the judge. "This case involved a vi- cious, unprovoked attack on several young people... It was, in fact, blood sport," he said. One of the victims, a 16- year-old, suffered a broken orbital bone, black eyes and other injuries after being thrown down, knocked un- conscious and repeatedly punched, kicked and struck in the head with tree branches. A victim-impact state- ment said he suffered nerve damage, may require future surgery and may suffer blindness were he to sus- tain a further eye injury. The teen and five friends were sitting at the picnic bench when a large group of young men on bicycles rode past them into a wooded area, court was told. The sounds of voices and snapping tree branch- es were heard before the gang, many wearing masks, came out of the woods and surrounded the victims. Two other teens received severe cuts and bruises and were treated at hospital, in- cluding one who was also knocked unconscious. Mr. Johnson and Mr. Styles - identified by a wit- ness as the ringleader - were acquitted of a second swarming near Emperor and Tulloch streets an hour earlier, although both were present when the 16-year- old victim was pursued on his bike, knocked down, robbed and beaten, said Judge Clark. None of the victims were able to identify their attack- ers and Mr. Styles and Mr. Johnson were convicted on the evidence of three of their confederates, who tes- tified against them as wit- nesses for the prosecution. Judge Clark rejected de- fence requests to grant the pair conditional sentences and house arrest, saying the seriousness of the of- fences warrants jail. Prose- cutor Mike Newell sought a term of 18 months to two years less a day. Neither Mr. Styles nor Mr. Johnson has expressed any remorse, said Judge Clark, who added he wasn't per- suaded the pair would not re-offend. "There has been no ac- knowledgment of responsi- bility... I am not satisfied these accused do not pose a danger to the community," he said. Mr. Johnson was sen- tenced to eight months in jail; Mr. Styles was credited by the judge with two months of pre-trial custody and ordered to serve anoth- er six months in jail, the equivalent of an eight- month sentence. Both were also given three-year probation terms. The conditions require they stay out of parks between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., they are in their homes from midnight to 6 a.m., and they must perform 120 hours of com- munity service. As the two men were led away in handcuffs by offi- cers, Mr. Styles smirked, while a solemn-looking Mr. Johnson nodded goodbye to relatives. Both were also banned from possessing firearms and other weapons for 10 years and were ordered to submit DNA samples to the national DNA data bank. The pair was the last of more than a dozen young people to be prosecuted in connection with a spree of summertime swarmings in Ajax-Pickering in 2001, dur- ing which teens were robbed and beaten. A Durham Regional Po- lice task force was created and officers eventually rounded up 17 individuals, including Mr. Johnson and Mr. Styles, and laid 405 charges. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, February 6, 2004 PAGE 7 P CANADA’S LARGEST COLLECTION OF HIGH QUALITY FASHION FRAMES •100% TITANIUM •ULTRALITE •FLEXIBLE METAL •FULL/SEMI RIMLESS •MULTI-TONE PLASTICS WHEN WE SAY 50% WE MEAN IT! 5050%% OFFOFF LENS COATINGS ALSO! By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING – In most ways Arsalan Shirazi is like any other 17-year-old. The Dunbarton High School student plays soccer and basketball, is a member of several school clubs, works hard at his studies and likes to spend time with friends. In other ways, the Pickering resident is unlike many teenagers in Durham. Arsalan has been on a pilgrimage to Mecca, prays in a school library room Fri- day afternoons, and speaks Arabic. The Grade 12 student is Muslim. His par- ents emigrated from England to Canada just before he was born. His mother was born in Pakistan and his father in India. As the faces of the Pickering and Ajax communities change, Arsalan is part of an increasing group of teenagers growing up immersed in Western culture, while em- bracing their own heritage. “Before it used to be something you thought was a bad thing because you never really fit in completely in either (culture), but now it’s something I cherish because the more viewpoints you have in life, the better,” Arsalan says. Arsalan didn’t always embrace his own culture with open arms, but as he got older it became more valuable to him. “Now it’s much more important than I thought it was,” he says. “My parents al- ways stressed it to me.” His interest piqued after taking a volun- tary pilgrimage to Mecca, the holiest city of Islam, in Saudi Arabia when he was in Grade 8. “A fter I did that something clicked in me and I wanted to learn more,” he says. He admits being different isn’t always easy. “It gets difficult at times because you have to explain things to people,” he says. When he was younger he used to have to explain, for example, why he wasn’t eating pepperoni on his pizza. At other times, he adds, he felt as though he was being put on the defensive. For Navtej Mudhar keeping her culture alive is also a priority. The 16-year-old is Sikh; her parents were born in Kenya and immigrated to Canada about 20 years ago. “They keep the Sikh culture and Sikh re- ligion close to them and here they want us to keep our culture close to us,” says the 16- year-old. They go to temple once a week, pray at home, and Navtej and her siblings - who were all born in Canada – take Punjabi lessons Saturday mornings. She is only able to speak a bit of the na- tive language. “Growing up in Canada it’s not like grow- ing up in India where they speak it all the time,” she says. “We spoke it when we were young and we take the classes to keep it up. “Sometimes I do (mind) but it’s impor- tant to me and my family that we keep our roots,” she replies when asked if she minds spending her Saturday morning in class in- stead of sleeping in or watching television. “Language is a huge part of that, part of our culture so I don’t mind doing that.” Kawther Hamed also uses language to stay connected to her culture. The 16-year-old teaches Arabic to chil- dren on Thursday nights while staying im- mersed in the language by taking classes on Sunday. Kawther has lived in New York City, Detroit, Windsor, Ajax and now Pickering. Al- though her parents are from Egypt, her culture comes from everywhere she’s lived. “I just picked up things from all the places I’ve been,” she says. Being a Muslim is important to her and she is proud of her religion. Her older brother Abraham notes that even though the culture is important to their parents (both of whom are teachers), they don’t impose their views on him or his siblings. “They tell us, ‘this is what we believe and how we see it,’ but they let us make up our own mind... That’s vital for me,” says the 19-year-old. “My parents tell me everything about the religion and let me make my own choices,” Kawther adds. “They’ve been very support- ive.” It was her decision to start wearing a hijab - a scarf that covers the head, neck and throat. It was a decision that wasn’t al- ways easy. “When I just started wearing the hijab, little kids are very ignorant of other cul- tures and they would ask me questions. I was just the weird girl,” she says. When asked if she ever thinks it would be easier to just not wear it she replies, “of course I think about it but it’s your belief, it’s your religion.” Despite some differences, the Grade 11 student has a lot in common with the typi- cal teenager. She’s in the craft, book, and athletic clubs, acts in school plays and is on the dragon boat team. She welcomes inquiries from people wondering about her background. “I don’t mind answering questions. You can ask anything you like; if you’re curious go ahead. You don’t want them to listen to stereotypes,” she says. Abraham not only likes to share his cul- ture with others, but he is also interested in asking questions about his friends’ cultures and religion. “Having two cultures makes you stronger because you can take the positive from your own culture and apply them here,” says the University of Toronto student. For Arsalan, he uses opportunities such as Christmas to educate people about his own religion. For example when someone says, ‘Merry Christmas,’ he explains he doesn’t celebrate Christmas. “It’s not something that annoys us but it’s something we’ve been accustomed to,” he says. “We can’t deny we’re the minority.” Arsalan sees the growing group of youth straddling two cultures as a positive step. “As we grew up we never saw colour. We never saw it as colour, we just saw it as an- other person,” he says. “That’s why this generation is able to eradicate racism more than any other.” Ron Pietroniro/ News Advertiser photo illustration Arsalan Shirazi is enjoying the best of two worlds. The Grade 12 student at Dunbarton High School mixes his Muslim heritage and regular prayer with a number of ex- tracurricular activities, including a friendly game of basketball with Saad Rahman. The Durham District School Board on Feb. 16 will unveil a two-year school ac- commodation plan, cover- ing the years 2005 and 2006. Amanda Canavan, presi- dent of the Ajax school’s clean up the school com- mittee, said it was no badge of honour that the commit- tee was required at the dingy school. She said small fixes here and there by the board are “no longer good enough. “We’ve been begging and pleading for money for years now with no reward,” the Grade 11 student said. “Our school is rapidly falling apart.” Other students de- scribed poor lighting in “hot and foul-smelling” classrooms, three wash- rooms for over 700 female students, and how embar- rassing it is to have visitors at the school. The aging school has an undersized cafeteria, a crumbling brick exterior, and an outdated south wing gym, with change rooms, washrooms and showers that are avoided by Pickering students and visiting players, said parent Bob Martindale. At the east end of town, Cadarackque Public School parents are hoping it’s third time lucky: pencilled into the first two plans, an addi- tion to the school was even- tually dropped from both. Karen Johnson, the school community council chairman, says the school has roughly 700 students and is currently 229 per cent over capacity with 13 portables. “When the school was opened in 1991, that was the only year we were under ca- pacity,” said Ms. Johnson. Parent Craig Beattie said, “The situation is dire in the present and in the fu- ture even worse,” as enrol- ment is expected to contin- ue rising to about 800 pupils in two years. “This isn’t a flash in the pan; these aren’t numbers that are going to go away in a few years,” he said, press- ing for a new school wing. Mr. Beattie described overburdened washrooms and said the main office, li- brary and gymnasium are far too small for the school’s student population. Ajax Wards 1 & 2 Trustee Marilyn Crawford, who voted against the last plan because Cadarackque’s ad- dition was left off of it, promised to again support parents’ request. “I will not vote in favour of any accommodation plan that does not have you on it,” she said. Meanwhile, down near the lake in Pickering, par- ents want to secure “a safer, healthier environment for students” at Frenchman’s Bay Public School, one of the most overcrowded in the region, says Morgan Dever. The chairman of the school expansion commit- tee says among the needs are better washroom facili- ties, an expanded and up- graded library and office area and a bigger gym. The school has 35 classes, but can only fit one at a time into the small library, and space outside of the school has to be rented to accom- modate visitors for large functions, said Mr. Dever. If the board can’t afford to complete all of the work at once, he proposed “a se- ries of construction pro- jects that would complete this work,” beginning with new washrooms and a ‘gymnatorium.’ “This is an understate- ment of their needs,” said Pickering Trustee Sherry Croteau. The new trustee said cre- ative school staff has “ab- solutely maximized” the use of space at the school. Pickering Trustee Paul Crawford said he hoped board staff recognize that some of the Frenchman’s Bay requests “are immedi- ate needs that need to be taken care of right away,” not really accommodation requirements. Judy Anderson, Operation Dialogue's program director says there's a growing sense Canadians are developing an appetite for knowledge about the events and personalities that shape their country. "In its first year, the Talk About Canada Scholarship Quiz revealed that students are excited about a fun way to learn more about those great achievements," said Ms. Ander- son. "It made them think about their role in this great country." The contest, located online at www.talkaboutcanada.ca is intentionally designed to en- courage young people to share questions with friends and family. It gives them tips for finding the answers by provid- ing links to Canadian Web sites and contestants have the entire 18-day contest period to re- search and respond to answers. "Students don't expect that Céline Dion's performance in an animated Disney movie could have anything to do with earning a university scholar- ship," said Ms. Anderson. "This contest tries to make Canadian studies interesting by mixing fun questions with more significant ones." Examples of contest ques- tions include: "What terrifying disease, re- sponsible for killing and para- lyzing millions," was brought under control in 1953 when a Canadian medical researcher, Dr. Leone Farrell, developed the "Toronto Technique," which allowed laboratories to mass- produce a vaccine?" (Answer: Polio). "Which goalie shocked the hockey world in 1959 by decid- ing to use a hockey mask in an NHL game, even though coach- es and fans criticized him se- verely? He changed the way hockey was played forever." (Answer: Jacques Plante). Operation Dialogue is a non- partisan, charitable organiza- tion formed in 1998 to engage Canadians in a lively, passion- ate dialogue about what it means to be Canadian. To in- spire Canadians to share their enthusiasm for their country's heritage, the scholarship con- test is just one of the initiatives offered. Other initiatives and infor- mation can be found at www.operation-dialogue.com. Road Watch sent more than 2,000 warn- ing letters in 2003 to Durham drivers report- ed by citizens as driving poorly or dangerously. The Clarington Road Wa tch Committee sent 691 letters, Whitby 294, Uxbridge 255, Oshawa 227, Scugog 160, and Brock had 40. In Ajax and Pickering, 354 were sent since May 2003. A community-oper- ated program, Road Watch gives civilians the opportunity to re- port aggressive and un- safe driving through citizen forms. Secure drop boxes and forms are available at various retail outlets through- out the region and at all police facilities. Po- lice officers receive these forms and in most cases, send letters to motorists warning them about their poor driving habits. If re- ports continue to be made against a vehicle owner more letters are sent and police might call the driver. This week, Mr. Holland announced he’s seeking the Liberal nomination for the new riding of Ajax-Picker- ing. The founding meeting for the Liberal Riding associa- tion of Ajax-Pickering was held at Papps Restaurant in the Home and Design Centre on Wednesday. Mr. Holland announced his candidacy just prior to the association’s meeting. The councillor said he’s always wanted to move up in politics. “There are a couple of things that attracted me. I’ve always had an interest in politics at all levels,” he noted, adding the other at- traction is a promise by Prime Minister Paul Martin to reform parliament to give MPs a larger role. “That wasn’t the case in the past. It will be true indi- vidual representation. We can represent our commu- nities without fear of being reprimanded by the party whip,” Mr. Holland stated. As well, “There are a number of issues that need to be followed through on,” he said Tuesday, preparing for his announcement. “We need a new deal for cities. We need stable, long-term funding for our cities. Cities are an integral part of our country.” The 29-year-old was first elected to Pickering council as the Ward 2 local Council- lor in 1997. He was ac- claimed the Ward 2 Region- al Councillor in both the 2000 and 2003 municipal elections. Mr. Holland ad- mitted trying to make the step from municipal to fed- eral politics is “tough. I’ve enjoyed and loved the stint I’ve had at the municipal level. But, this opportunity has come up.” The new riding, which should be in place for a spring election, will be all of Ajax and Pickering north of Finch Avenue and east of Valley Farm Road. Current MP Dan McTeague is planning to run in the new riding of Pickering-Scarborough East, while Judi Longfield will seek the nomination in Whitby-Oshawa. “I had no idea this seat would become available,” Mr. Holland said, adding the Senate had been hold- ing up the realignment of riding boundaries. “Last month, that changed. For the timing, unfortunately I don’t get a say. If I want to run for a federal riding, this is the op- portunity. It’s an opportu- nity that may not come for- ward again for 10 years,” he stated. Mr. Holland said he became involved in the Lib- eral Party in 1993. One other person may also be seeking the nomina- tion, Mr. Holland added. The nomination meeting should be held “by the end of the month,” he said. Mr. Holland is married to Aerlyn and they have three children. Trio of companies compete to build centre, hospital wing By Carly Foster Staff Writer DURHAM –Three pre- qualified contractors will now battle to build the Durham Region Cancer Centre and the north wing of the Oshawa hos- pital, after Lakeridge Health received provin- cial approval to go to ten- der. "A fter years of hard work and delays, Lak- eridge Health patients, staff and physicians will all benefit from these new and approved facilities," said Anne Wright, chair- man of Lakeridge Health Corporation's board of di- rectors. Lakeridge had approval for the $328-million rede- velopment, but needed a further go-ahead to start construction, said Derek Beckley, corporate direc- tor of redevelopment for LHC. The north wing will house a new emergency unit and a new intensive care unit, as well as oper- ating rooms. It is slated to open in the fall of 2005. "This will come as wel- come news to patients and to our staff and physicians who are presently operating under trying conditions, particularly at the Os- hawa emergency depart- ment," said Brian Lemon, LHC's chief executive offi- cer. The cancer centre will expand existing services that are currently scat- tered throughout the Os- hawa site, a press release said. The new centre will offer chemotherapy, can- cer surgery and care in one space for the more than 4,000 cancer pa- tients in the Durham, Haliburton, Kawartha and Pine Ridge regions, Mr. Lemon said. "Most importantly, for the first time, it will allow us to provide radiation therapy to our patients," he said, adding the centre is expected to be open by the summer or fall of 2006. Lakeridge would not re- lease the names of the three pre-qualified con- tractors the tender is going out to, only that they are very large com- panies. The $39 million Heroes of Hope campaign is "very close" to target, with hopes the annual lottery will push it over, said An- drea Russell with the drive. The Ministry of Health and Long-Term care "re- mains committed" to pro- viding $196 million toward the redevelopment, a spokesman said in early January. The balance of the re- development will come from Lakeridge's own fi- nancing, Mr. Beckley said. After the buildings' shells are complete, an- other tender will go out to fit the insides. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, February 6, 2004 PAGE 19 A/P 900 Champlain Ave., Oshaw a 1-800-642-4561 or (905) 723-5211 Store Hours: Mon. - Wed. 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., Thurs. & Fri. 10 a.m. - 9 p.m., Sat 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., Sun. 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. *Administration fee of $49.99 and taxes, due at the time of purchase $2229 99 $3829 99 $1329 99 $2359 99 $649 99 $839 99 One Year No Interest No Payments! O.A.C Building the future of cancer care DU RH AM –While most babies in the Region are born healthy, many women of reproductive age have poor lifestyle habits, a recent local re- port says. One-third of women aged 20 to 44 smoke, 57 per cent are physically in- active, 45 per cent are overweight and 66 per cent consume less than five servings of fruits and vegetables each day, the Snapshot on Newborns report said. "These findings are def- initely cause for concern for the health department and should be a concern for all area residents," said Mary-Anne Pietrusi- ak, an epidemiologist with the Durham Region health department. Research has shown these unhealthy habits lead to decreased fertility in women and men, the report said. Durham's fertility rates are decreasing along with Ontario's as women are having fewer children and waiting longer to have them, the report said. As well, baby boomers - who make up a large per- centage of the population - are aging and moving out of their reproductive years. Other highlights from the report: • about 6,000 babies are born in Durham each year; • about 200, or 3 per cent, of those babies are born with abnormalities such as Down's Syndrome and cleft palettes; • the multiple-birth rate increased from 1.7 per cent in 1986 to 3.5 per cent in 2000; • Durham's stillbirth rate of 5.8 per 1,000 births is lower than the Ontario average. The health department offers many programs for expectant and new par- ents, including Babyville for babies up to 12 months and Healthy Ba- bies/Healthy Children. Unlike others, however, she spends much of her time in therapy, learning to do what most of us do instinctively. Kayla suffers from cerebral palsy and developmental delays and is now learning to walk, says her mother Cathy. “She walks with assis- tance, like walking by holding your hand,” Ms. Walsh says. Kayla can take a few steps on her own, but can’t stand. “If she stops, she can’t stand up,” Ms. Walsh adds. Kayla doesn’t crawl, she “bum scoots. She can get where she wants to go, as long as there are no stairs.” Kayla’s cognitive ability is about nine to 12 months of age, her mother adds. The prognosis for Kayla is uncertain. “No one can really tell us. I personally believe she will be able to walk,” Ms. Walsh says. “She has the ability to learn, but she’ll never catch up. She’ll always be behind.” Kayla attends senior kindergarten at St. James School in Ajax in the mornings. In the after- noon, she “does a lot of dif- ferent types of things. There’s physiotherapy, oc- cupational therapy, con- ductive education and swimming.” She swims at the Grand- view centre in Oshawa and in a special-needs’ chil- dren’s program at the Pickering Recreation Complex. “She loves swim- ming.” Conductive education is a program offered by the Ontario March of Dimes, combining education and rehabilitation to help peo- ple with motor disabilities increase their indepen- dence and mobility. Kayla attends a CE ses- sion once a week, where she works on improving her balance, motor skills and hand-eye co-ordina- tion. The family has been in- volved with the March of Dimes for two years, through the CE program. “It involves a variety of dif- ferent therapies - walk, move, stand up and bal- ance. There’s a lot of play, like stand up and pick up a toy,” Ms. Walsh says. There’s also a little speech therapy. “It’s a fun type of therapy. She enjoys it.” The family doesn’t know if Kayla will be able to talk. “We don’t know. That’s the unknown.” Therapists are trying to develop a communication system involving pictures, Ms. Walsh says. “That’s a slow process.” Despite her difficulties, Kayla’s personality is “very fun,” her mom says. “She always has a smile on her face. To look at her, you won’t know there’s any- thing wrong with her. She loves to be with other peo- ple.” Kayla also loves music. “If she’s cranky or cries, I can turn on music and she calms down,” Ms. Walsh notes, adding she likes “any kids’ music. She does- n’t like adult music at all. She likes Barney.” Kayla’s younger sister is Madison, who will be two on Feb. 18. “They’re pretty good to- gether. Their jealous of each other, like any sibling rivalry,” Ms. Walsh says. Kayla will sometimes grab clothing or hair as she tries to stand. “Madi- son, as she gets older, she’s tolerating it. We notice now that as Madison gets older, she realizes Kayla is different. She’ll grab her hand and she tries to walk her. It’s nice to see,” her mom says, adding Madi- son has no disabilities. Next year, Kayla will be in Grade 1 at St. James as well as continue with the various therapy sessions “as time permits. We try to have her in as much as possible, so she can learn more,” Ms. Walsh says. During January, the March of Dimes held its annual fund-raising drive, but donations can still be made. Here, the film crew sets up for a shot outside a house in Port Perry. The movie is set to open in theatres on Feb. 20. Movie ‘Welcome to Mooseport’ takes over Durham town Ray Romano, Gene Hackman star in comedy flick; Po rt Perry turned into a movie set last summer DURHAM — Port Perry hits the big screen as small-town Ameri- ca on Feb. 20 when 'Welcome to Mooseport' opens in movie the- atres across North America. The movie, filmed primarily in the Scugog Township location, stars Gene Hackman and Ray Romano. Port Perry turned into a large movie set last summer as its downtown was decked out in red, white and blue Americana while TV and movie stars and production crews worked their magic. Look for the downtown in a starring role, not only in the movie, but also on the official We b site, www.welcometomoose- port.com. The movie also fea- tures other local exteriors and the interiors of several buildings, including Home Hardware and private homes, all specially dressed for the filming. The story centres on former American president Monroe 'Eagle' Cole (Hackman) who re- tires to Mooseport and is per- suaded to run for mayor and is assured of acclamation. But Harold 'Handy' Harrison (Ro- mano), popular owner of the local hardware store, decides to run too. Along the way, the race for the mayor's job becomes a race for the woman, as Cole un- knowingly puts the moves on Harrison's girlfriend. The comedy also stars Marcia Gay Harden, Maura Tierney, Fred Savage, Rip Torn and Christine Baranski. For local listings, go to durhamregion.com. Hackman and Romano perform a scene from ‘Welcome to Mooseport’. The following movies open in local theatres this weekend: Catch That Kid Directed by Bart Freundlich Starring Kristin Stewart, Max Thieriot, Corbin Bleu, Jennifer Beals, Sam Robards Meet Maddy, Gus and Austin, three kids on a mission without permission. They use their skills in rock climbing, computers and mechanics to get the job done, circumventing high- tech security systems, guard dogs and a security chief along the way. Miracle Directed by Gavin O'Connor Starring Kurt Russell Based on the exciting true story of one of the greatest moments in modern history, 'Miracle' is the in- spiring story of the gold-medal- winning U.S. men’s hockey team that transcended its sport and united a nation with a new feeling of hope Barbershop 2: Back in Business Directed by Kevin Rodney Sullivan Starring Ice Cube Calvin (Cube) has gotten over his money troubles and is no longer in danger of losing his shop - but his neighbourhood is in danger of losing its identity. Intent on 're- gentrifying' the South Side, a money-hungry corporation is moving into the community with coffee bars, video stores, and a big-name haircut chain, and the area's 'mom and pop' establish- ments are in danger of losing their hometown advantage. Richard Karikari, 24, a rookie cornerback with the Grey Cup f inalist Montreal Alouettes, is back in Ajax and will head up the football camp, along with fellow Alouettes cornerback Wayne Shaw and free safety William Loftus. The CANallstar football camp gets under way on Sunday, Feb. 15 with a free open house at the Salem Indoor Soccer Centre on Lakeridge Road from 1 to 3 p.m. Following the open house, the camp will carry on for one week- ly session each Sunday for two hours each session. The ses- sions will be split into two groups: one for those in Grades 9 to 11 and another for those in Grades 7 and 8. Karikari is hop- ing for 40 to 45 players to attend the camp. "We want to give players expo- sure to different aspects of the game," says Karikari, who was picked by the Alouettes in the second round, the first corner- back taken in the Canadian Football League draft, last April. Karikari took a rather cir- cuitous route to the pro ranks, which started in Ajax, and took stops in the U.S. and in eastern Canada before finding his way to the Alouettes this season. He played only one season of high school ball, suiting up for the Pickering High School Tro- jans after transferring from St. Mary Secondary School in Pick- ering for his OAC year. Following high school, he at- tended Sheridan College and played football at the University of Buffalo before transferring to St. Francis Xavier University where he starred with the X- Men, while also studying com- puter sciences at the Antigo- nish, Nova Scotia-based facility. While there, he played as many as six positions (cornerback, punt returner, tailback, quarter- back, defensive halfback and re- ceiver) in several games. And, two years ago, he helped the X- Men to the AUA final, only to lose to the St. Mary's Huskies, the eventual 2002 Vanier Cup champs. He racked up a number of personal accolades while at- tending SFX, including being named as a first-team All Cana- dian, a conference all-star and the Atlantic Conference nomi- nee for the Hec Crighton Tro- phy as the most outstanding collegiate football player in Canada in 2002. He was also an AUA all-star at two positions in 2002. Karikari says he's happy being an Alouette and enjoyed a strong first season with the team. He dressed for 14 of 18 games and in addition to play- ing cornerback, he also served as a kick returner on the squad. "I came into a situation where the team was already good," says Karikari, adding the Alou- ettes are number-one in Mon- treal with diehard fans. "It's worked out well." Although he's signed with the Alouettes for the 2004 season, he wants to eventually go south of the border to play in the NFL. He notes the San Diego Charg- ers and the Buffalo Bills have expressed an interest in him. "I still have aspirations to go to the states," he says. Everyone wishing to attend the open house should call 647- 883-2323 to confirm your atten- dance. Cronin earns second shutout of the season DURHAM —Backed by the red- hot goaltending of Amanda Cronin, the Telus Lightning recorded its sixth victory of the season in National Women's Hockey League play on the week- end. The Lightning scored a 2-0 vic- tory over the visiting Ottawa Raiders at the Ajax Community Centre last Sunday. For Cronin, it was her second shutout of the season as she kicked out 31 shots in the contest. For her strong efforts of late, she was named the NWHL 'player of the segment'. She also recorded a 2-0 shutout over the Oakville Ice in mid-December. L ightning's Joanne Eustace opened the scoring in the first pe- riod on an assist from Ryann Geldner. The score remained at 1- 1 until late in the final period when Ashleigh Miller scored an insurance marker, assisted by Eu- stace and Robyn Shaw. The Lightning (6-21-0 for 12 points, fourth in Central Division) see next action against the Oakville Ice this Sunday in Oakville. Telus returns to home ice the following Saturday, Feb. 14 against the Montreal Axion at the Ajax Community Centre at 8 p.m. Annual bonspiel puts cash, bragging rights on the line By Al Rivett Sports Editor AJAX —The curlers in the Mon- day Night Ladies' League just want to have fun, but they want a little competition, too. That's why the annual Annan- dale Ladies' Invitational Cash Ex- travaganza (ALICE) Bonspiel has been such a popular event en- tering its 12th year in existence. "Yeah, it's a fun bonspiel, but it is competitive," says organizer and Monday night league curler Jennifer Klepadlo. "We try to make it so it's not too competi- tive." The bonspiel is almost full, with four or five spots to fill to make it a 32-team event, slated for the Annandale Curling Club on Sat- urday, Feb. 7. Most of the teams come from within the Monday night league, but there are always a few out-of- club rinks invited. The top cash prize is $400, with the purse gradually decreasing to $50 for the 12th-place team. There are, however, several raffles and door prizes, with many local busi- nesses chipping in with dona- tions. The ALICE bonspiel is a family affair for Klepadlo, as she'll com- pete with her Monday night league team skipped by her sister, Michelle Martin, her mother Bon- nie and friend Amy Carr. Each team plays three six-end games, with the first draw start- ing at 8:30 a.m. and the second commencing at 10 a.m. The event is also a qualifier for the Melita Sunshine Bonspiel, which is administered by the To ronto Curling Association. The winner of the Melita is eligible to win a trip to Florida. ALICE mixes fun and competition AMANDA CRONIN Shuts down the Raiders. CAll 905-665- 7684/ NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, February 6, 2004, PAGE 31 A/Pwww.durhamregion.com Power play fizzles as Pickering juniors finish regular season with close loss to Oshawa By PPaul FFuthey Staff Writer DURHAM ——The final regular- season game may not have meant anything in the standings for the Pickering Panthers but John Winder knows his team's power play will simply have to produce more in the playoffs — when the games really count. Indeed, the man advantage will be critical for any success against the Newmarket Hurri- canes, the Panthers' first round opponent in the Provincial Ju- nior ‘A’ playoffs. Game 1 of the best-of-seven Nor th Conference quarter-final series went last night (Thursday, after our deadline) in Newmar- ket. Game 2 is 7:30 p.m. tonight (Friday) at the Pickering Recre- ation Complex. The power play will certainly have to be better than what it was Tuesday in a 2-1 loss to the Oshawa Legionaires. "We've got to move the puck a little better," said Winder, the Panthers' coach/GM. "We've got to get more goals than that." Against the Legionaires, Pick- ering was blanked on nine power-play opportunities, among which were an 83-second two-man advantage in the sec- ond period and a five-minute stretch in the third during a major penalty. Andrew Dissanayake's first pe- riod goal, assisted Derek Lynden and Jeremy Whelan, was the only Panther marker on the night. Panther goaltender Bryan Schermele, who had looked good in keeping the Legionaires off the board, was beaten twice in a span of 42 seconds late in the second period. Winder did seem satisfied with the Panthers' play in their own end. The Panthers generally lim- ited Oshawa's offensive chances, especially during a two-minute five-on-three power play in the first period. Schermele, who gave up a power-play marker and had no chance on the winner, was solid in goal. "Defensively, I thought we did OK tonight," Winder said. NOTES: The Panthers finish the season with a 12-30-7 record, good for eighth place in the South Conference. Newmarket, their playoff opponent, was de- termined under a combined playoff structure with the five- team North Conference... "New- market's a hard-skating team," said Pickering coach/GM John Winder, who sees his own club's skating ability as a crucial ele- ment against the North Confer- ence powerhouse. "It'll be a great series."... The Hurricanes are the only team to have beaten the league goliath Aurora TTigers this season, doing it twice...after Game 2 tonight, the Panthers are at home again Feb. 11 for Game 4 and, if necessary, Game 6 Feb. 15. All start times at the Pickering complex are 7:30 p.m...Whelan led the team in goals this season with 20; Dis- sanayake was the points leader with 39.
