Ready to fight for hospital Ajax woman wants service levels to remain the same By Danielle Milley Staff Writer AJAX – Yvonne Bosch doesn’t want to see the hospital local residents have worked so hard to make strong be stripped of its services. The Ajax resident became motivated after reading a letter to the editor in the News Adver- tiser from Dr. Romas Stas urg- ing citizens to do something be- fore they lose their hospital. The doctor is concerned about cuts to services. Ms. Bosch is showing her sup- port for Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital through a pe- tition that has garnered more than 5,700 signatures in only two months. “I’m still expecting a couple of sheets. It’s probably going to reach 5,800,” she said. She received help from other concerned residents who went around collecting signatures, while petitions were put in sev- eral local doctors’ offices. Ms. Bosch has an attachment to the hospital. In the 50 years since she moved to Ajax with her husband, a doctor, she’s seen the hospital grow from the day it was built. She has volun- teered there and her husband practiced at the hospital until 19 91. The goal of the petition is to maintain and enhance services for the growing and aging popu- lation in the area. “That we will keep our ser- vices as we’ve had so far,” Ms. Bosch said. “That (services) are not gradually taken away - a full- service hospital that is the idea.”OPG welcomes reviews Numerous reports will ‘make us better’ By Keith Gilligan Staff Writer PICKERING – Three reviews under way will determine the future of Ontario Power Generation and the company welcomes the stud- ies. “We don’t have a problem with a review. It makes us a better company,” said OPG vice-presi- dent Pat McNeil in speaking to the Community Advisory Com- mittee on Tuesday. “I’m an employee and an exec- utive and if the shareholder re- quests a review, then golly gee, we have to do a review.” The reviews include one led by John Manley, the former federal L iberal finance minister, and Jake Epp, a former Progressive Conservative federal cabinet minister. They are looking at the future of OPG in the wake of a damning report on the compa- ny’s performance in the restart of four reactors at the Pickering nu- clear station. Provincial Energy Minister Dwight Duncan “asked Mr. Man- ley and Mr. Epp to come forth with a series of recommendations on the future of OPG and whether to continue with the re- habilitation of Pickering (reac- tors) 1, 2 and 3. They’re targeting mid-March,” Mr. McNeil stated. Durham, municipalities receive cash DURHAM – The Region has received $1.2 million from the Province for “community investment.” The money is an annual donation to Clarington, Oshawa, Brock and the Region to invest in “priority pro- grams,” a provincial press release said. Clarington, which received $116 ,000, puts the funds towards re- ducing property taxes, said Mayor John Mutton. Oshawa Mayor John Gray said the City would use its $401,000 share to defray some capital costs. Both mayors said the “meagre” funding is supposed to be used to offset the “over burdening” of provincial downloading. Brock received $344,000, while Durham’s take was $344,000. By Carly Foster Staff Writer DURHAM –A possible regionwide transit system jumped its first of three hurdles after Durham council voted to send the proposal to its mu- nicipalities. Clarington put a motion forward to have the Region assume full responsi- bility for transit by July 1. The move would see the existing systems in Ajax-Pickering, Whitby, Oshawa and the Oshawa-run Clarington service come under one umbrella. The decision was made in a 20-3 vote (with five councillors absent) after almost an hour of debate at re- gional council Wednesday. Ajax mayor Steve Parish, who said last week Durham does not have the money or population to support a re- gionwide system, voted against the motion. “It’s easy to say we want the mon- key off our backs... let’s lob it off on the Region,” he said, calling the idea “irre- sponsible” and “absolutely ridiculous. “The Region is facing... a five-per cent tax increase or more. If the Re- gion wants to take that five per cent and double it, then regionwide transit is the way to go.” Pickering Councillor Rick Johnson pointed out the money all comes from the same spot. “There’s only one tax- payer, whether they pay (for transit) locally or regionally,” he said. Some councillors were also con- cerned about feasibility studies, the aggressive timeline of July, labour is- sues surrounding keeping jobs and pay levels, as well as compensation for handing their buses over. It’s uncertain how the northern mu- nicipalities of Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge will fit into a regionwide sys- tem, but the six area representatives all voted in favour of the idea. Councillors will now take the mo- tion back to their municipalities, which asks for them to endorse the transit-wide system by Feb. 28. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, January 25, 2004 PAGE 3 A/P RoadHandler®tires… only at Sears! Investigations are continuing into both crashes, Durham Regional Po- lice said. Darren Brown of Farewell Street was killed when his eastbound Isuzu pickup truck collided with a transport that was pulling out of a private drive- way onto Bloor Street, west of Steven- son Road, at 9:40 p.m., police said. In an earlier crash, a 74-year-old Ajax woman was seriously injured after she lost control of her eastbound To y ota Matrix on Bayly Street East in Ajax, spun into the westbound lanes and struck a tractor-trailer at 8:45 a.m., police said. The collision occurred between Salem and Lakeridge roads. The vic- tim, whose name was not released, suffered life-threatening injuries and remains at Sunnybrook Health Sci- ence Centre in critical condition. Bayly Street was closed for several hours as police investigated, with the assistance of the Ministry of Trans- portation. Witnesses are asked to call the colli- sion investigation unit at 905-683-9100 ext. 5267. pany’s mandate and business plan, with a report due in late Febr uary. “It will provide guidance to the board as it makes changes to the business plan,” Mr. McNeil noted. Also, KPMG is doing an audit of OPG’s board of directors, he said. He didn’t know the cost of the reviews, but doesn’t expect it to be high. “A lot of the information is al- ready there,” Mr. McNeil said. “They take the information and compile it.” In early December, a panel headed by Mr. Epp issued a scathing report on the company’s performance on the ‘A’-side restart. OPG’s top three execu- tives resigned in the wake. Mr. Epp is now chairman of the inter- im board. “He has a long history and deep knowledge of all things nu- clear,” Mr. McNeil said. The interim board “will stay in position until the government de- cides what it wants.” As for the operation at the plant, the Unit 6 reactor is cur- rently in a planned maintenance outage, he said. That began at the beginning of December and the work is “coming along very well.” Unit 4, the first of the four mothballed reactors to be restarted, was running at 96 per cent of power Tuesday morning and “in the next few days it will be 98 per cent and holding there. The unit is operating very well,” he added. Mr. McNeil pointed out with the three remaining ‘A’-side reac- tors “a substantial amount of ef- fort was done parallel of unit 4’s return to service.” If the company gets the go ahead to continue rehabilitating the units, work would start this summer and Unit 1 would be back online in late 2005. “There would be some limited engineering work on units 2 and 3. The bulk of the work would be done on Unit 1,” he noted. The cost to refurbish Unit 1 is estimated at $500 million, he said, adding $1.5 billion was spent re- furbishing Unit 4, but there are common components related to all four units. Any changes in services, he said, have come because of physician and nurse shortages, as well as funding shortfalls. “To think we can address these challenges it means we have to look at service delivery and that’s what we’re doing,” Mr. Martin said. Ms. Bosch said once all the sheets are collected a copy of the petition is going to be sent to Pickering and Ajax councils, as well, a copy will probably be forwarded to the hospi- tal. “As it is now I feel we’re sitting waiting for the councils,” she said. “It’s a difficult situation but if you don’t speak out nothing happens. At least this way I tried.” Mr. Martin said the hospital is planning to consult with the com- munity in February about options for service delivery. “We are committed to continuing to grow our sites, specifically our Ajax and Pickering site,” he said. “We’re committed to the $47-million expansion and we’re moving ahead with that.” www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, January 25, 2004 PAGE 5 A/P The Oshawa General Hospital Foundation $20,000 Shoppin g S p r e e ! But, even though they prove themselves capable and are will- ing to take on responsibility and in some cases hard labour, it can't be forgotten that they are still naïve in many ways and have to be protected. That's why a program such as Passport to Safe- ty makes so much sense. Students, under the age of 24, once they've passed an online test in the national youth initiative, are much better prepared to use the health and safety training offered at their workplace. It's necessary to prepare teens to learn safety procedures right off the bat when starting jobs, because statistics show they are six times more likely to be injured at work during their first month on the job. So, students and employers, now that you know the program exists, use it. We can't stress enough the importance of getting involved. Any student taking on a new job should have this Web site book- marked in order to prepare. And employers, on their own initia- tive, should make it a policy to require their student employees, when hired, to take and pass the PTS test. In fact, this should be a slam dunk for employers. It can't hurt to have one more safety education policy in place. Companies and businesses already protect themselves and their student em- ployees with training videos and literature outlining safe work procedures. Now they can augment what they provide and feel confident students will understand the materials they're given. It's your basic win-win scenario. The challenge now is simply to get the word out there and get students and employers up to speed. At www.passporttosafety.com you will find all the details and can even try a sample safety test. Businesses are charged a fee to become members, based on the number of employees they have. Dunbarton High School Grade 11 students are taking the pro- gram and school administration has found it's a good fit for par- ticipants. Many local employers like Dupont Automotive Finish- es in Ajax are jumping on board the program for the advantages it offers. You just can't put a price on safety. Editorials &Opinions SUNDAY, JANUARY 25, 2004 ✦ News Advertiser ✦ DAVID STELL, NEWS EDITOR, 905-683-5110 EXT. 249 Editorial So Belinda Stronach has made it official and thrown her hat in the ring to lead the new Conservative Party of Canada. Her sights, of course, are on being Cana- da's next prime minister. Where have we heard this story before? You know, the old 'high- powered executive leaves the com- fort and success of the private sec- tor for a shot at running the country' tale. Oh, right, that would be the storyline our current prime minister followed too. So why all the resentment to- wards Ms. Stronach, and now as an extension, Prime Minister Paul Mar- tin? Many are saying neither is in touch with the common man given their success. Even some Conserva- tive Party officials have expressed concern that with Ms. Stronach as leader, they wouldn't be able to paint Mr. Martin as a fat cat corpo- rate shill out of touch with reality. What a shame. For so long now the trend has seemed to be one of throwing our trust and future into the hands of lawyers at all levels of government -- with miserable re- sults. Consider: Brian Mulroney and Jean Chretien were lawyers and both were dogged by controversy after controversy. Then there’s Dalton McGuinty, another lawyer. It's early, but the Ontario premier is off to a brutal start, already rendering hundreds of his election platform promises vir- tually worthless. Closer to home, lawyer and Ajax Mayor Steve Parish continues to lead a council that is the most divi- sive in Durham now that Nancy Di- amond is out of Oshawa council. For the last three years of govern- ing, Mayor Parish was constantly accusing his fellow council members of everything and anything sinister. Good leaders should find a way to work with all personalities, not just the ones who agree with their line of thinking. So does all this mean if you're a lawyer you're not qualified for our top political jobs? Of course not. But it would be foolhardy to dismiss anyone who happens to be wildly successful and 'rich.' Think about it. People like Ms. Stronach and Mr. Mar tin have made careers out of working with others, brokering deals, and finding common ground for the good of everyone. And those qualities are exactly what we must start demanding in our political leaders -- be they busi- ness owners, lawyers, or the guy down the street. Tony Doyle's column appears every second Sunday. E-mail tdoyle@durhamregion.com. We need more from our politicians Tony Doyle M a n a g i n g E d i t o r Time for answers on OPG concerns To the editor: In 1997/98, a citizens' community advi- sory group was formed by Ontario Power Generation to assist it in under- standing and addressing community concerns about the start up of the Pick- ering 'A' reactors. The group compiled a list of 165 envi- ronmental issues and a systematic ac- tion plan, which was submitted to OPG but never implemented. Included in the 165 issues, which Pick- ering and Ajax Citizens Together for the Environment presented to the Atomic Energy Control Board, was a request for an independent environmental assess- ment (EA) of the OPG business plan for the retrofit and start up of the Pickering A generators. Neither the provincial government nor AECB saw the need for an indepen- dent environmental assessment. The same questions asked in 1997/98 are now asked of the recently elected Ontario Liberal government: • Why are taxpayers now asked to pay $1.5 billion to retrofit one nuclear gener- ator, when the estimated cost for all four was $800 million; and • Why have the 165 environmental is- sues that were listed by the citizens' group still not been addressed? We need to look at long-term options for the supply of future electricity for Ontario, with an ever-increasing open mind. In our opinion, as an environmen- tally sensitive community group, we in- clude the encouragement of the private sector to generate new energy power plants, within an EA. A full independent EA process is vital to ensure every local community has its questions answered, and more impor- tantly, supports the decisions to revital- ize local energy sources that have a provincial benefit. David Steele Chairman, Pickering and Ajax Citizens Together for the Environment Letters to the Editor Durham lifestyle drives steady growth By Carly Foster Staff Writer DURHAM — The surest sign of the Region’s growth can be seen during a short drive. Hop in a car and travel north of Hwy. 2 anywhere in south Durham, from Pickering all the way east to Clarington. Yo u ’ll know it by the way houses seem to melt into the skyline, with their identical peaks and driveways, porches and cars. Durham is swelling - some say sprawling - outward. And, according to the principle of supply and demand, as more and more people flock to the Region, new developments are popping up everywhere. For 20 years, Rick Janson lived in Halifax, where he was at the mercy of economic ups and downs. But by 2002, he, his wife, Geraldine Ryan, and their Nova Scotia Duck Tolling retriever, Grommit, had had enough. The family decided to move to Ontario. Mr. Janson came first, spend- ing a few months bunking down with a cousin in Mississauga to look for a job and a home. He wanted to find work in his field and settle into a neighbourhood that was older and established. He found what he was looking for in Oshawa. “We didn’t want to be part of the endless sprawl around 905,” said Mr. Janson, 46. “We liked Oshawa because it had a cer- tain amount of identity, a beachfront, a downtown.” From Nova Scotia, Ms. Ryan had checked out a Rowe Street house on a Web site. Shortly af- terward, they sold their home out East and moved in at the end of 2002. Mr. Janson now takes the GO Train to Toronto each day, where he works in the communications department of a labour union. Ms. Ryan, 50, works at an unemployment cen- tre in Pickering. “Easterners have a reputa- tion for being friendly, but Os- hawa people are so friendly, too,” Mr. Janson said. His neighbourhood collects money for an annual fireworks display and has a golf tournament for dads around Father’s Day. Mr. Janson and his wife are just two of the almost 300,000 people who have moved to Durham since 1976, two years after the Region was formed. Just over 200,000 have settled here in the past 15 years. “This is an attractive commu- nity for people to come here, get jobs, plant roots,” said Alex Georgieff, the commissioner of planning for Durham. “There’s an abundance of natural her- itage, a variety of lifestyles avail- able... these all add to the quali- ty of life. “The word on the street is that Durham has a lot of this.” It was family, friends and value for their money that got Tammy and Steve McCabe into their semi-detached home in Whitby last August. “The amount of house you get for your money is much better,” Ms. McCabe, 35, said of their home in the Whitby Shores sub- division near Brock and Victo- ria Streets. “We looked seriously at Markham...but for the same size house, you pay almost $40,000 more.” And after also looking at Ajax and Pickering, it was Whitby’s charm that sealed the deal. “Whitby is very picturesque and cute,” Ms. McCabe said. “There’s the community centre, Iroquois Park, the health com- plex...good support in that sense.” Amenities were also a draw for 32-year-old Attila Sulyok, who immigrated to Canada from Romania in November of 2002. “I found Durham Region had good opportunities for a start,” he said. Mr. Sulyok initially stayed with friends in Whitby, but is now renting a house in Oshawa. “I have friends in Toronto, but found Durham - especially Oshawa - provides me with schools, places to work... malls, a hospital, a GO bus at my door.” Mr. Sulyok, who worked in the information technology in- dustry in Romania but is trained as a teacher of mathe- matics, is hoping to teach in a Durham school. He’s taking free English as a Second Language courses through the Durham District School Board’s continuing edu- cation department. Statistics Canada numbers for 2001 show Durham has growing South Asian, Chinese, Filipino and Latin American populations, with the foreign- born population sitting at around 95,000. Approximately 16 ,000 have moved to Durham since 1991. “I think sometimes they choose Durham because the housing is cheaper (than To ronto),” said Monica Mc- Clure, the coordinator for the ESL/Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada pro- gram. “Often they’re joining family members already here, so you’ll often see large, extended fami- lies living together.” Mo re than 70 per cent of Durham’s growth has resulted from new residents moving in, at an average of around 12,000 newcomers each year since 1996. The planning commission- er calls it “a good, steady clip.” “It’s important to ensure (growth) happens in an orderly fashion,” Mr. Georgieff said. “You need to make communi- ties that not only attract people and investment, but sustain the rural bounty and land base. “All the growth you see today has been planned for,” Mr. Georgieff said. “We anticipate growth, not with a Ouija board, but we direct it and nurture it.” The guiding tool is the Re- gion’s official plan, which helps manage growth while protect- ing the environment and defin- ing urban, rural, industrial, commercial and agricultural boundaries. While the Region is currently reviewing the original 1978 plan for the second time, it’s interest- ing that the original core goals of the time still remain. Back in 19 76, for example, the then newly formed region said it needed a university to attract people. The University of On- tario Institute of Technology opened its doors in 2003. That ‘If you build it they will come’ philosophy is carried out in other areas of the official plan to encourage population growth, including the Hwy. 407 expansion, widening Hwy. 401, the development of an airport and the Seaton lands develop- ment in Pickering, and the re- cent failed bid for the Interna- tional Thermonuclear Experi- mental Reactor (ITER) project in Clarington. “We’re at the cusp of having that key infrastructure in place,” Mr. Georgieff said. “When you start to put in that high level of infrastructure, it’s the key to people making in- vestments. “It’s those catalysts that will draw more people.” Next month: The tidal wave of subdivisions. MISKIN, DENTIST HWY. 401 HWY. 2 WESTNEY RD.HARWOOD AVE.WE ARE AVAILABLE TO SERVE YOU WE WELCOME NEW PATIENTS WE PEOPLE OF ALL AGES Ask The Podiatrist It’s time to winterize your feet Ronald J. Klein B.Sc., D.P.M. Podiatrist-Foot Specialist Everyone knows that with a decrease in temperature in the fall we must do certain chores around the house to ready it for the winter. The same is true for our car, including antifreeze and a thinner oil. But how many of us are aware of the need to “shape up”, to ready our bodies and muscles for the start up of that new ski or hockey season? Healthy feet and ankles must be fit and strong to act as accelerators, steering, brakes and shock absorbers. Any weakness to these extremities can lead to injuries and even the end of a season of participation. A fitness program should begin in the early fall to ready yourself by the sign of the first flakes. For skiing, strong quads and abdominal muscles are most important. Knee bends, sit-ups, crunches and skipping rope all help to strengthen your quadriceps and abdominal muscles. Racquet sports are equally beneficial in maintaining cardiovascular benefits and reaction time. Greater flexibility allows for a wider range of motion and minimizes the chance of strains. Stretch antagonistic muscle groups to maintain a point of tightness; hold for 40 to 60 seconds and release. Repeat each stretch three times. Strength of muscles is also important but overdoing it can lead to muscles tears. Wa r m-ups are most important before beginning the activity especially for cold weather sports. We idle our cars on cold winter days, but are we as kind to our bodies? Wa rm-up exercises help stretch muscles and allow for greater mobility. This minimizes the chance of injuries by allowing the muscles to be more responsive and act as better shock absorbers. Stream the part of the body used in the activity; for example, your legs in skiing or skating when warming up but also do upper body circular arm swings. A cool down period after the activity is also important. A sauna or whirlpool followed by a cool shower will help. Stop the activity when you’re tired. Remember, more injuries occur on that last run of the day when your fatigue hampers your reactive time and you are not paying attention. Winter sports require pr oper clothing. Upper body layering will keep you warmer and always wear a hat to prevent heat loss. Proper foot wear includes insulated waterproof boots or shoes. Socks must remain dry to prevent the occurrence of frostbite. Those suffering from pre-existing circulatory pr oblems such as diabetes or Raynaud’s Disease should consult their medical doctor. Ski boots and skates should fit properly for a safe and uneventful activity. If the boots or skates are too loose, toes quickly get irritated in the toe box. If they are too tight, pressure leads to blisters and abrasions causing painful feet, which may compromise control and lead to injuries or accidents. Tight boots or skates can compromise control and lead to injuries or accidents. Tight boots or skates can compromise circulation. Do not put children in hand-me-downs. S kates that are too large or wide may lack proper ankle support leading to strains, sprains or even fractures. Runners in the winter may unconsciously change their foot strike pattern which can lead to overuse injuries. To increase traction on slippery surfaces, runners may land with the entire foot instead of the natural heel-to-toe strike. Lateral slippage may lead to groin pulls. Some runners are trying spikes that fit over their shoes when jogging in icy areas. Some problems to watch out for are: 1) Frostbite: S kin freezes when exposed to cold temperatures and high winds. With longer exposure blood vessels constrict and skin colour changes from blue to white. A feeling of numbness or burning may indicate frostbite. Wet feet are more prone to frostbite as are people with previous history of frostbite. Continued on page 10 At Curves, resolutions are a group effort. Shield yourself from high winds and keep moving. Treatment involves putting fingers in armpit touching warm skin. Remove clothing from the affected area and avoid rubbing the skin. Immerse the affected area in warm (40C) water (20 to 30 minutes) until the affected area turns red. If blisters develop, add an antiseptic such as Betadine to the skin. If no water is available, keep affected areas warm with blankets or in contact with other person’s skin. See your medical doctor as soon as possible. 2) Blisters: Friction from ill-fitting foot gear can cause blisters. Do not pop a blister as it will then more easily infect. If it breaks on its own, use an antiseptic such as Betadine and cover with a sterile bandage. 3) Hypothermia: This affects the entire body and involves loss of body heat. Initially shivering will generate more body heat. If shivering stops, a person is not necessarily warmed, and this is sometimes a war ning sign. Continued exposure to cold temperatures can lead to hypothermia. This is a medical emergency and professional care should be sought. 4) Strains and sprains: These are common especially with skiing and skating. They should be created with rest, ice, compressions and elevate (RICE). Winter can be a fun season if proper care is taken. Attention to muscle flexibility, proper clothing and war m-up exercises will ensure a season of injury free fun. Not literally, of course, but along with being vice- president of employee ser- vices at the successful Lenbrook Corp., she is now poised to lead the Ajax- Pickering Board of Trade as its new president. She is officially sworn-in Feb. 5 at the president’s in- augural dinner. While Ms. Wideman has watched Lenbrook grow steadily since its inception, the board of trade has had its ups and downs over re- cent years, she says. She was first involved with the board from 1985 to 1997, be- fore being called back to serve again in 2001 when the board needed a rebuild- ing plan. She praised outgoing president Nigel Allen, as well as Pat O’Brien, recent- ly retired from Ontario Power Generation Picker- ing Nuclear, who was ap- pointed adviser to the board. “They didn’t jump ship (when things were rough),” Ms. Wideman said. “Where we are today is much more stable.” Ms. Wideman said the board will now focus more on strengthening govern- ment relations. A big issue is transportation costs. For example, she said, mem- bers with fleet vehicles have faced hefty increases to op- erations. “A c ommittee of 15 mem- bers got together to talk about the transportation problem,” she said. “It shows how passionate they are about it.” The board plans to arrange an opportunity to discuss these issues and party platforms directly with candidates in the next federal election, expected this spring. “There’s always new chal- lenges for businesses,” she explained. “First you had GST... now the Privacy Act. Small businesses don’t al- ways know how to handle it. Joining the board would help educate these busi- ness owners.” www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, January 25, 2004 PAGE 11 A/P Where every day Is Payday! Parents want Arrowsmith program to help meet needs of learning disabled By Mike Ruta Staff Writer DURHAM –Devorah Gar- land Ullberg has the time. Twenty-five years ago, however, if you had asked her to read a clock face, it would have been a chal- lenge for the Pickering resi- dent. Learning disabled (LD), she had trouble iden- tifying the relationship be- tween symbols, along with a number of other problems. After completing Grade 13 , she spent a year at the f ledgling, private Arrow- smith School in Toronto. The school offers the Ar- rowsmith Program (AP) of brain exercises, developed by Barbara Arrowsmith Young, to help LD people strengthen weak cognitive areas. Today, Ms. Garland Ull- berg is a university gradu- ate, married with two daughters, runs a home- based business, and has built what she calls “a happy and successful life. “Without a doubt, my life changed dramatically in a year; it was incredible. My father said I opened up like a rose. I believe that who I am now, at 44 years of age, is based on the foundation of Arrowsmith School.” Ms. Garland Ullberg and some other local parents want Durham’s school boards to offer the AP. It is currently available in Durham only at the private, Wasdell Centre for Innova- tive Learning in Pickering. “I actually created the school with Arrowsmith as its cornerstone feature, along with other, what I would call, similar pro- grams,” says school princi- pal Dr. Elizabeth Moxley- Paquette. Wasdell is in its second year of offering the pro- gram, and enrolment has grown from four students in the first year, to the current 27. Prospective students un- dergo several days of test- ing for the 19 dysfunctions the AP addresses. These in- clude messy handwriting, a difficulty in writing and thinking at the same time, and poor word recognition. Each student’s program is tailored to their needs by Ms. Arrowsmith Young, and might require full- or part-time enrolment. Full- time enrolment is $16,000 per year. “The results have been very good, more than my expectations,” Ms. Moxley- Paquette says of how stu- dents are faring. Several students for whom four to five years of Arrowsmith work were planned, will finish the pro- gram in two to three years, she says. Unlike the Arrowsmith School in Toronto, which does not accept students if behavioural problems or autism, for example, could affect their ability to do the exercises, Ms. Moxley-Pa- quette has accepted such students in a one-to-five student-to-teacher class ratio. Otherwise there is a one-to-10 ratio. Arlene Slack’s son is LD and a Grade 4 student at St. Monica Catholic School in Pickering. Severely LD, he cannot read or write. Ms. Slack says the board’s in- clusive, special-education model, where LD and other special-needs students are in regular classroom place- ments, with accommoda- tions, isn’t helping her son to improve. For a year her son has at- tended Wasdell’s motor symbol sequencing pro- gram on alternate Satur- days. He does one hour of exercises at home every night. “His writing has im- proved slightly,” says Ms. Slack, noting his progress comes in “waves” rather than being steady. Te resa Bigioni, another St. Monica parent, finds that the accommodations made for her son in the reg- ular classroom setting sim- ply amount to less work rather than helping him to progress. “I’m all for inclusion, but at the same time it should- n’t be to his detriment,” she says. “They’re not giving them anything that they can use in their lives.” Mitch LePage, special- education superintendent at the Durham Catholic District School Board, points out that not every parent believes the board’s model isn’t working. “That particular claim is being made by a very small number of people, and there are a number of peo- ple in our board... who feel that the inclusionary model is the best model for their children,” he says. The board reviewed ser- vices for LD students a cou- ple of years ago and as a re- sult “developed a fairly ex- tensive resource guide for teachers,” says Mr. LePage. In addition to assistance technology for LD kids, he says the board has ac- quired licences for software that benefit students with milder LDs. Mr. LePage says he has spoken with the St. Monica parents and, as with any program it becomes aware of, the board is looking at Arrowsmith. “To date there’s not a lot of empirical evidence to support the program; it’s largely anecdotal,” says Mr. LePage, adding that is “frankly a concern.” Staff will eventually make a recommendation to the board’s senior staff as part of its review of special-edu- cation programs. It’s like- wise at the Durham Dis- trict School Board, where a special-education review in- cludes a look at the AP. Marlene Pike, the board’s special-education officer, saw the program in action last year at a Toronto Catholic District School Board school. Seven Toron- to Catholic schools offer the program. She says it’s too early for her to make an evaluation of the AP. “Part of what we’re doing is looking at the research around all special-educa- tion programs,” says spe- cial-education superinten- dent Don McLean. He says a report with rec- ommendations should come to trustees by the end of the current school year. Durham Catholic par- ents welcome Andrea Peir- son from Arrowsmith School to a free information session in Ajax Jan. 26. She discusses the program at 30 Kingston Rd. W. (Loblaws, upstairs) at 7 p.m. For in- formation and to RSVP, call Ms. Bigioni at 905-509-1458 or Ms. Slack at 905-509-2121. A first-year player with the National Hockey League's Min- nesota Wild, Burns is fitting in nicely with a club that features a good mix of veterans and rookies and plays in front of an always-packed Xcel Energy Center in hockey-mad Min- neapolis/St. Paul. "I've been paying my dues," says the right-winger. "I was playing a lot at the start of the year with (Pascal) Dupuis and (Marian) Gaborik out (contract disputes). (Now) It's been hard to get in the lineup. "There are a lot of young guys, and the older guys treat you really good. We're strug- gling a little bit right now, but we hope to turn it around." But, hard work is nothing new to the first-round, 20th- overall Wild draft pick, who's still adapting to the huge step up to the pro ranks from junior hockey, where he played with the Brampton Battalion last season. "It's a lot of work and it takes a long time to get used to it," says the 18-year-old. "The prac- tices are a lot tougher (than ju- nior hockey) and they're very difficult. There's not a lot of glamour. It's a lot of hard work and you're away from home a lot, so it's tough." Burns has roots in Ajax, hav- ing been born here and lived here as a child. His family moved to Lindsay when he was young and now reside in Barrie. He played his minor hockey with the Toronto Marlies and North York Canadians organi- zations. He later graduated to tier II junior hockey with the Couchiching Terriers, before being drafted in the third round by the Battalion, 52nd overall in 2001, where he was converted from a defenceman to a forward under head coach Stan Butler. The 6-foot-4, 210-pounder is now settling back in with the Wild after being an integral part of Canada's entry in the World Junior Hockey Champi- onships in Helsinki, Finland last month. Loaned by the Wild to the national junior team just days before the opening of try- outs in Kitchener, Burns quick- ly established himself, scoring several times in exhibition games leading up to the final roster cuts. At the championships, head coach Mario Durocher placed Burns on a forward line with Jeff Carter and Ryan Getzlaf, which was affectionately dubbed 'The Goof Troop' after the Disney cartoon, mostly due to the fun-loving, affable nature of the trio. The line hit its stride in the early going and produced five points in the semifinal, a 7-1 romp over the Czech Republic. "At the first game of the tour- nament, everything started to come together for us," he says. "We created a lot of scoring chances every game and that's what we needed to do." One bad period separated the Canadians from achieving a gold medal, Burns laments. After leading through most of the final, the U.S. scored three times in the final frame to hand Canada a bitter 4-3 defeat. "In the third period we came up a little short," he says. One month removed from the event, Burns says it's still tough to lose to the Americans in the f inal. "It was worse losing to the States than losing the gold medal," he says. "But, I think it was good for hockey, having two Nor th American teams in the f inal." Most of all, it was the chance of a lifetime to play for his coun- try. "I would go back next year, but you never know. I had the time of my life over there and it would be awesome to go to Nor th Dakota (the site of 2005 world junior championships) and beat the States." Although working hard is part of the hockey landscape in Minnesota, it's not all business, admits Burns, who's tied to a story that he requested some help from local teenage girls about what his first automobile purchase should be. He admits the story's true, but says it was mainly friends he consulted in order to settle upon buying a new Cadillac Es- calade. He takes delivery Tues- day. "I asked them what they'd like. I had a couple of cars I wanted to get. They liked that one, and that's the car I liked the best too," says Burns. So far, Burns has a goal and four assists with the Wild, scor- ing his first NHL goal Oct. 12 in a 3-2 home-ice loss to the San Jose Sharks. While the Wild (17-18-14-0 for 48 points, 10th in the Western Conference) have struggled for wins this season, posting the most ties (14) of any NHL team, Burns hopes the team can get on a roll prior to the all-star break next month. "All the guys want to win. We 're playing well, but we're not getting the extra goal. We need to get a good roll going," he says. Pickering High earns wins over St. Mary, Richardson, Dwyer AJAX —The Pickering High School Trojans senior boys' hock- ey team is on a roll. The Trojans won their last three Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) games, earning a close 2-1 win over the first-place St. Mary Catholic Secondary School Mon- archs (8-3-1 for 17 points West Di- vision) from Pickering. Pickering also posted a 7-1 thrashing of the Monsignor Paul Dwyer Saints of Oshawa (3-9-0 for six points, ninth place in East Division), as well as an 11-1 pounding of the J. Clarke Richardson Storm (0-12-0, last in West Division) just prior to exam week. The victories propelled the Trojans (7-4-1 in league; 15-6-1 overall) into the top 10 in the weekly GTA poll of senior boys' hockey teams. Most satisfying was the win over St. Mary, says coach Lou Manserra, where the Trojans played a finely tuned defensive game, while also making the most of their offensive opportuni- ties. "It was a really good defensive game -- everything you would want in a game. It was a hard- fought win," says Manserra. After the teams played to a scoreless draw through the first two periods, the Monarchs hit the scoreboard on a goal by Greg Riggs. The Trojans replied with five minutes remaining in the third period, when Paul Kent scored on a shot from 10 feet out. With three minutes remaining, Patrick Milne notched the win- ner. The Trojans had only nine players against the Paul Dwyer, but had more than enough fire- power to subdue the Saints. Milne contributed a hat trick, while Michael Rocca recorded two goals, and Steve Dizig and Alex Rombis chipped in with one apiece. No scoring was available for the J. Clarke Richardson contest. The Trojans currently reside in second place in the LOSSA West Division standings, two points back of St. Mary. The LOSSA senior hockey playoffs are expected to begin by late January. The Pickering novices are in St. Clair Shores from Jan. 30 to Feb. 1. The Panthers earned their way to Michigan by going unde- feated in Brampton, capping the tournament with a narrow 4-3 victory over archrival Vaughan Rangers in the cham- pionship final. Game most valuable player Brandon Robinson scored a hat trick to lead the way for Picker- ing. Kodey Ogaki netted the other goal. The novices opened the tour- nament with a 2-1 victory over the Rangers. Jamie Morrow netted the win- ner, with Steven Conely open- ing the scoring. Game MVP Adam Fujita was outstanding in goal. The Panthers next defeated the Orangeville Flyers 6-1, on the strength of game MVP Brandon Robinson's four goals. Sean Power and Davis Kuksis also scored. In Game 3, the Panthers to- tally dominated the Brampton Battalion 8-0, with two goals each from Kuksis and game MVP Robinson, and singles to Conely, Morrow, Markell Nelson and Jordan Saddler. The Panthers and Caledon Hawks played to a 0-0 tie in the fourth game. The contest fea- tured an amazing display of goaltending by game MVP Ste- fan Lamanna. The Panthers entered the Brampton event as the favourites, having won the Chatham Friendship Tourna- ment in November, and having clinched first place in the York- Simcoe Minor Hockey League. Other players contributing to the tournament win were Jere- my Wu, Nathaniel Fermin, Conor McLeod, Joey MacLeod, Ryan Chiu, Stuart MacKenzie and Josh Kotsopoulos. Kevin Robinson coaches the team, assisted by Peter Morrow and Kevin Taylor. The trainer is Mark Holland, the manager is Mark Fujita and the assistant manager is Angelo Lamanna.
