Justin, 16, of Ajax, a first-year g uard with the Pickering High School Trojans senior basket- ball team, died unexpectedly Dec. 23 after the team had com- pleted a three-game tour of St. Petersburg and Orlando, Flori- da just prior to the Christmas break. He would have turned 17 on Dec. 31. The suspected cause of death of the promising basketball player was complications due to pneumonia, according to Mr. Eadie. But, he wants a clearer picture of why such a tragedy could happen to a teenager who was healthy prior to the Florida excursion. “We’re trying to get all sides of what happened. We’re just try- ing to piece everything togeth- er,” says Mr. Eadie, a Montreal businessman, who served as a father figure to Justin as he grew up in a single-parent fami- ly. “We plan to get information from the hospital as well as the principal and the coaches at the school to put the puzzle togeth- er and get some closure in terms of what the coaches saw and what they did and what the protocol was. “A 16-year-old doesn’t leave here and pass away seven days later. That’s something that happens to a 60-year-old. It’s still a mystery that we’re trying to piece together.” Pickering basketball coach Ron Parfitt says Justin was feel-SAVE TODAY AT Carroll Home Improvements 905-686-2445 Roofing Windows Doors STOPSTOP DON’T THROW YOUR MONEY AWAY Prices in effect until January 18, 2004 www.blaisdale.com12 mths - grade 8 5 Campuses in Durham Call Head Office 905-509-5005 Blaisdale MONTESSORI School Best Private School As voted by Ajax/Pickering Readers’ Choice Awards Limited Spaces Available LOOK WHO’S ONE Sebastian is celebrating Name Dropping, 13 KEEPING TABS Students hop off pop News, 3 SERVING PICKERING SINCE 1965 News Advertiser PRESSRUN 46,600 ✦ 20 PAGES ✦ SUNDAY, JANUARY 11, 2004 ✦ durhamregion.com ✦ OPTIONAL DELIVERY $6/$1 NEWSSTAND Jason Liebregts/ News Advertiser photo Is it cold enough for you? Another step closer Family wants answers Pickering compost facility would help address general lack of sites across Ontario By Carly Foster Staff Writer DURHAM –The Region is inch- ing toward a full-scale com- posting site that will allow all residents to have green bins – and send fewer trucks to the landfill. The Durham Region works department is currently negoti- ating a contract with longtime waste disposal supplier Miller Waste Systems to open an in- door composting site in Picker- ing. “In order to meet 50-per-cent diversion, we will have to go or- ganic... there’s no other way to get there,” said Cliff Curtis, the commissioner of works. The Region’s goal is to divert 50 per cent of its waste by 2007. It’s got a jump on it already, with green-bin composting cur- rently in Clarington, Scugog, Brock and Uxbridge. L ack of space has prevented Durham from expanding the highly successful program into Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax and Pickering, said Peter Watson, manager of waste for the Re- g ion. “Overall in Ontario, there’s a general lack of composting sites, and it’s a real problem,” Mr. Curtis said. “It’s a matter of getting enough confidence in the business so people will in- vest.” Miller already has most of the provincial approvals to run ✦See Community page 5 ✦See Site page 4 A/P PAGE 2 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, January 11, 2004 www.durhamregion.com ask for Meghan Gaudet Better still drop by, we would love to show you our home. Suites Now Available Cause of house fire still unknown Ajax, Pickering crews at the scene for seven hours AJAX –The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office has been called in to investigate a blaze that gutted a north Ajax home. The fire destroyed the home at 402 Delaney Dr. early Thursday afternoon. No one was injured and the damage is estimated at $350,000, Ajax Deputy Fire Chief Matt Pegg said. “The cause isn’t known,” Mr. Pegg said Friday after- noon. “That’s what the OFM is working on.” The fire marshal’s office had some heavy equipment called to the scene to help remove debris. On Friday, yellow police tape was stretched around the scene to keep the curious out. The blaze began around noon and within minutes the entire house was en- gulfed. Firefighters were hampered initially when the closest hydrant didn’t work because of the cold temper- atures, Mr. Pegg stated. Firefighters had to drag hoses several hundred feet to the nearest hydrant, on Bowles Drive. Mr. Pegg said the water lines coming from the hy- drant were frozen. Ajax fire crews were on the scene for about seven hours and were aided by the Pickering and Whitby de- partments. Pickering had an aerial ladder pumping water while the fire was at its peak. Mr. Pegg on Thursday praised firefighters for their efforts in keeping the blaze from spreading to neigh- bouring homes. Water was pumped on homes on both sides. Linen comes out for Christian women’s club DURHAM –The next meet- ing of the Ajax-Pickering Christian Women’s Club is Thursday, Jan. 22. The feature this month is a presentation by The Linen Company of Whitby. There will also be music by Bev Foster and a presenta- tion by guest speaker Sandy Walker. The group meets from 9:30 to 11 :15 a.m. at the An- nandale Golf and Curling Club, at the corner of Bayly and Church streets in Ajax. Admission is $7 at the door and $5 for first-time guests. Durham boards applaud removal of soft drinks from school machines By Mike Ruta Staff Writer DURHAM –Donovan Fraser is “a bit of a nu- trition freak.” So when the T.R. McEwen Public School principal took the reins of the Oshawa school this September, he got rid of the pop machine. “I thought that juice and water would be healthier alternatives, so we made a deci- sion,” he says. Mr. Fraser says students barely noticed the change, and none have complained that they want the old Coke machine back. “The kids still patronize it all the time,” he says. “I have difficulty keeping it stocked.” Soft drinks in elementary and middle school vending machines will be a thing of the past next fall. Canadian beverage manu- facturers this week announced they will no longer stock those machines with carbonat- ed drinks. Instead, half of all the drinks of- fered will be either water or 100-per-cent fruit juices. The machines will also contain a vari- ety of other drinks like juices and sports drinks. “I think it’s great; it’s certainly a step in the right direction,” said Luigia Ayotte, pro- grams superintendent at the Durham Dis- trict School Board. “My concern is we really need to focus on education, too. Children really need to devel- op good food habits. For me, the critical piece is kids understanding what’s good for them.” On Monday night, she presented a report to trustees on school programs and activities that encourage nutrition and wellness. It states 42 per cent of board elementary schools that have vending machines offer only healthy drink choices, namely juices and water. Ms. Ayotte did not know how many public elementary schools in Durham have vending machines. Deborah Lay, a Durham Region public health nutritionist, agreed the beverage manufacturers’ decision is “a positive move” that the health department supports. How- ever she would like to see fruit and sports drinks out of the machines as well. “The issue is that fruit drinks and sports drinks are very high in sugar,” she says, not- ing a 100-per-cent fruit juice is the best choice. “We don’t want to send out messages to students that it’s a healthy food choice be- cause you’re not having a pop.” Ms. Lay said if that perception took root, it would be very hard to correct. She notes that Canadian dietitians have adopted the theme ‘Eat well, Play well’ for 2004. “The target audience is the people who in- f luence kids in making healthy food choices,” says Ms. Lay, recommending a visit to www.dietitians.ca. Patricia Manson, the Durham Catholic District School Board’s education director, says as far as she knows “there are a few vending machines in our elementary schools, but they contain products other than pop.” As for soft drink machines, she says, “I don’t believe that we have machines in areas where students can use them,” as they are intended for staff use. DURHAM -The Ontario Medical Association welcomed the announcement from Refreshments Canada that soft drinks would no longer be of- fered in Canadian elementary and middle school vending machines, starting next fall. It offers the following tips to help kids develop good eating habits: • Avoid rewarding good behaviour with un- healthy treats such as candy, chips or chocolate; • You do not have to deny children their favourite treats, like ice cream and candy, but offer it to them in moderation; • Satisfy your child’s sweet tooth by offering healthy alternatives such as dried or fresh fruit in- stead of candy, or frozen yogurt instead of ice cream; • Help your child establish healthy eating and exercise habits when they are young - set a good example with your own healthy lifestyle; and • Ask your child to go grocery shopping with you and teach them how to make healthy choices from the basic food groups. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, January 11, 2004 PAGE 3 P DRIVER EDUCATION CENTRE 68 HARWOOD AVE. The Region would close its leaf- and garden- mulching compost site across from the recycling centre on Gerrard Road in north Whitby and ship everything to the site, Mr. Curtis said. The composting would happen in an indoor facil- ity, with some yard waste outdoors, he said. “So there will be no odour problems, no ob- noxious side effects,” Mr. Curtis added. Durham did not go to tender for the compost site, as the works depart- ment was directed by council to deal directly with Miller. The company is the only one with a Ministry of the Environment-ap- proved site, and currently handles all of north Durham’s compost, Mr. Curtis said. The Region and Miller are “near the end” of ne- gotiations, and the site could open in late 2005. About 10 p.m. some of the players came to us and told us ‘Justin’s sick.’ We couldn’t get a doctor, so we took him to the hospital right away. It was better to be safe than sorry.” According to Mr. Eadie, Justin was initially admit- ted to Florida Hospital Celebration Health in Or- lando and was later trans- ferred to Florida Hospital, also in Orlando, where he died four days later. Mr. Eadie says the fami- ly has been heartened and is appreciative of the sup- port received from the school and the Ajax com- munity in the aftermath of the tragedy. He noted the phone at the family’s home has been ringing non-stop with words of encouragement and sup- port. “Yes we have (received support) and we will con- tinually need that,” he says. The family, he adds, is trying to cope the best it can. “What can you do? It’s beyond words, but we’re trying to pull together as a family.” Mr. Parfitt says the school community is hurt- ing from the heartbreak- ing loss of one of its stu- dents and athletes. Currently, there’s a display in the school trophy case in Justin’s honour, and each player with the Trojans’ se- nior basket- ball team will wear a patch bearing his number 22. “It’s been very tough on everybody,” says Mr. Parfitt. “You don’t expect it to happen.” Mr. Eadie says his nephew was like a son to him and he was actively involved in raising him throughout his childhood. He used adjectives like “great” and “amazing” to describe Justin, who had a great number of friends. Mr. Eadie says his nephew embodied every- thing an athlete should be: hard-working, hon- ourable and extremely passionate about basket- ball, his family and friends. “His friends mentioned that he always kept them on the straight and nar- row. He was just a really good kid,” says Mr. Eadie, adding his nephew’s dream was to become a pro basketball player, and, secondarily, to be involved in business, like his uncle. Mr. Parfitt notes Justin was a “great kid” who was not only a great asset to the team, but also to the school community. “He helped coach the little kids’ league,” he says. “He was fun, outgoing; he was kind of quiet if he didn’t know you. He was a great kid and very helpful. He was everything you would want to hear in a kid.” Although Justin is being remembered on the Tro- jans’ jerseys and by the school memorial, Mr. Parfitt says he discour- aged the players from dedicating the season to him. “Some of the players said ‘We want to win for Justin’, but I said ‘no’,” he says. “We’re just going to play. Justin liked playing basketball. Everyone will remember him in their own way.” A funeral service was held Jan. 2 at the Word of Truth Christian Centre in Pickering. The service attracted more than 500, with many people standing through- out in order to pay their respects. Justin is also survived by his mother and father, Catherine and George, and by siblings Janae, Chevon and Jillisa. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, January 11, 2004 PAGE 5 A/P 1-800-GM-DRIVE goodwrench.gmcanada.com. †Offers not available in Thunder Bay, Fort Frances, Dryden,Terrace Bay and Kenora. P PAGE 6 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, January 11, 2004 www.durhamregion.com RIDE battle is far from over Educational efforts should target middle-aged adults Thirty-nine. Forty-six. Fifty-three. Sixty-three. Not the numbers in a bingo game, but the ages of some of the motorists charged this year in the far deadlier game of drinking and driving. In fact, of the 50 drivers charged with driving while over the legal alcohol limit in this season's RIDE campaign, a quick count of the names and ages of the accused, posted on the Durham Regional Police Web site, reveals that only 18 motorists are under the age of 30. This year, the vast majority of suspect- ed drunk drivers are in their 30s and 40s. That's a sobering thought for anyone who believes most drinkers who demonstrate a lack of judgment by getting behind the wheel are inexperienced kids. Even though Mothers Against Drunk Driving report that young drivers between 15 and 20 are more often involved in al- cohol-related crashes than any other age group, it appears mid- dle-aged drivers in Durham still haven't gotten the message. Anyone who was charged by RIDE officers this year and who is convicted should actually be grateful they were stopped by the law before they caused an accident. Although fewer RIDE charges this year is a positive sign, it's clear officials can't let up in their educational efforts to discour- age drinkers from driving. In six weeks, RIDE officers checked 30,700 vehicles and administered 855 roadside breath tests. Be- sides the 50 charged, 129 people registered a "warning" and were given 12-hour suspensions. Those numbers should be consid- ered unacceptable by anyone who drives on Durham's high- ways. Indeed, police say the number of motorists charged is still a big concern for them. Despite the fact that accused drunk drivers whose names are posted on the police Web site are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, if posting those names proves to be a deterrent, police should adopt it as a permanent tool in the fight against impaired driving. When the force does a further analysis on this year's RIDE results to evaluate the future publication of names, officials would do well to consider the ages of the accused. These are not the people being reached by educational pro- grams in our schools. Much more needs to be done. It's up to each and every one of us as individuals to treat drinking and driving as socially disgraceful, and to ensure we, our own family and friends make alternate transportation plans in appropriate circumstances. Even one impaired driver on the road is too many. Editorials &Opinions SUNDAY, JANUARY 11, 2004 ✦ News Advertiser ✦ DAVID STELL, NEWS EDITOR, 905-683-5110 EXT. 249 Editorial Heritage deserves more headlines To the editor: Re: 'Museum's time to shine,' Jan. 2. I would like to commend the News Advertiser for the article on the Picker- ing Museum Village Foundation and its request for funds to restore the Brougham Central Hotel. I feel more emphasis and attention should be brought to the community re- garding the salvation of our heritage in Pickering. In this day and age of high technology and built-in obsolescence, so many things are here today and gone tomor- row. We need places like the Pickering Museum Village to educate us about our heritage and remind us that some things really do last. The Backwoods Players, a theatrical group that operates in conjunction with the museum, does an excellent job of just that. Its depictions of our historical past are one of the best learning tools for our children - and for ourselves. The restoration of the Brougham Central Hotel will help in its quest for historical performances and in turn, help us to understand who we were - and in some ways - what we have lost. I know personally, when I visit the muse- um for one of its events or for a Back- woods performance, it is like shrugging off the burdens of today and stepping back into a much simpler (although cer- tainly not easier) period of time and en- joying a way of life that should be pre- served and perhaps emulated in some ways. Kudos to the museum and all who work towards this goal. How can we move forward if we can't look back? Cathy Schnippering, Pickering Conservation program penalizes residents You expect politicians to break promises, you really do. It's as assured as death and taxes. A candidate (insert name here) promises the world and then quickly backpedals once elected. But Durham politicians and re- gional staff have taken the issue to a dangerous new level with their re- cent decision to raise water rates by six per cent in 2004. Quite frankly, the move is deceptive. The rate hike is needed to deal with upgrades to infrastructure, along with increases in staff wages and benefits, tough new safety reg- ulations, and, to a tiny extent, de- creased water consumption. De- creased water consumption? It's this last justification that's re- ally been hard to swallow. After all, who would fight an increase that helps ensure our water is meeting the highest possible standards in this post-Walkerton era? And sure, employees are entitled to raises and better benefits, just like anyone. But decreased water consump- tion? The Region regularly urges residents to purchase low-flow toi- lets and turn their attention to water conservation in general. Even now you can log on its Web site and read about all the potential savings. So why now penalize taxpayers for doing what they were asked? Durham's works commissioner, Cliff Curtis, in an interview this week didn't quite agree residents are being punished. He said conservation still pays for residents in that the more they save, the further back future system expansion and repair projects get pushed. He also stressed if you begin to conserve, you'll save. Final- ly, he noted the big hit in the reduc- tion of use by large industrial users has had an impact on overall re- gional consumption levels. The un- expected loss has to be made up. But his arguments fall short in one key area. Residents are being taxed further for achieving the gov- ernment's conservation goals. What terrible irony. The Region acknowl- edges in a report that it expects consumption levels and revenues to continue to be impacted by conser- vation. So, very likely, you'll be hit with another increase next year. Where's the incentive, the good faith between taxpayers and their government, that if you work to- gether, it pays off? If the Region can't build trust with taxpayers, it'll never get a buy- in when it wants to push through future campaigns. Councillors and staff may want to rethink this move or beware the consequences. Tony Doyle’s column appears every other Sunday. To ronto Public Health re- cently shut down Skin Tattoo for improper sterilization of equipment used for body pierc- ing and tattooing. Improper sterilization can lead to blood- borne diseases like HIV and he- patitis B and C. “At this time we have no evi- dence of transmission of infec- tious diseases, but because of the improper sterilization of some equipment there is a low risk,” said Ross MacEachern, manager of environmental health for the Durham health department. The operator of the parlour, located at the Scarboro Trade Centre weekend flea market at 4181 Sheppard Ave. E., cannot provide a list of all his clients, Mr. MacEachern said. “It is very important that anyone who received a service at the tattoo shop call us” so they can find out what tests need to be done, he added. The operator may also have done tattooing and piercing at his home in Scarborough. Clients should avoid home- based tattoo operations be- cause they are unlikely to have been inspected, the health de- partment said. Patrons of Skin Ta ttoo are asked to call the Durham department at 905-723- 8521 or toll free 1-800-841-27298 ext. 2188. Why do so many people find it almost impossible to stick with their New Year’s resolutions? Isn’t there an easy and effective way to achieve the results you deserve and desire? The answer is “yes”. The true solution rests in your unconscious mind, and your unconscious mind can easily be accessed through the powers of hypnosis, neuro linguistic programming, emotional clearing, and meditative conditioning. The interesting thing about making change in your life is that you already know what you should do, but you are not doing it. If you want to lose weight, you already know you should eat better and exercise more. If you want to stop smoking you already know that your health will improve by removing toxins from your body. If you want to make more money, you already know that being compensated for your efforts is the key. So if you already know what you should do to improve your life, then why are you not doing it already? The answer is that your unconscious mind has been “programmed” to accept things as they are and will not allow you to do what you know you should do consciously. Therefore, the only way for you to make change is at the unconscious level, and the only way to access your unconscious mind is through the powers of hypnosis, neuro linguistic programming, emotional clearing, and meditative conditioning. Learn these skills and change your life. Here is a sample of what students are saying about award winning trainer and best selling author Rory Sheehan: “If you want a course that will teach you what you need to do to be successful, and coach your mind to lead you there, this is it!” Tamara Meilinas, Stouffville “Close your eyes and picture where you want to go ... then open them and Rory teaches you how to bring your dreams to life.” Robert Lis, Toro nto “Rory is going to make me more successful on several fronts in my business/life. The best, most directly applicable course I have taken.” Sheelah McNeill, Toronto Rory Sheehan is a certified instructor of hypnosis, a master hypnotist, a master practitioner of neuro linguistic programming (NLP), a master practitioner of emotional clearing techniques, a Reiki Master, and the Founder of meditative conditioning. Sisters Pace Fitness, with locations in Ajax, Pickering, Brooklin and now Courtice, is here to help you stick with your goals. This family of fitness facilities is owned by Sarah Hull and Tara Stedman-Smith, two moms who know first- hand how hard it can be to squeeze a workout into a busy schedule. “For both Tara and I physical fitness has always been an important part of our lives,” says Ms. Hull. “Tara has played soccer since she could walk. I have been a dedicated gym member for as long as I can remember, and I allowed nothing to come between my regular workouts and me. That is until I became a first-time mom.” Ms. Hull discovered Sisters Pace Fitness through an ad and initially thought the concept of a 30-minute workout that could burn up to 600 calories was just too good to be true. But she tried it anyway and was so impressed she told her best friend, Ms. Stedman-Smith. “Knowing how difficult it was for Tara and I to find time to workout we knew there were many women out there like us who had the desire to exercise but no time,” says Ms. Hull. “At that point we began our quest to open our own 30-minute fitness and weight loss centre for women.” A 30-minute workout that will change your life Continued on next page In just 12 short weeks of following a simple supervised program, you can get healthy and lean just like so many others. It’s a circuit training facility for women of all ages and fitness levels that alternates upper body strength training exercises with aerobic recovery stations followed by lower body exercises. The circuit only takes 30 minutes to complete and it is set to music with voice-cues that tell you to change stations. At the end of the half hour, every major muscle group will have performed three exercise sets, with up to 600 calories burned. Another appealing aspect of Sisters Pace Fitness is they make it very easy for you to work out with a very flexible schedule - they’re open seven days a week - and they vary the workout to keep it interesting for members and to promote results. In addition to circuit training, they offer after-hours yoga and stability ball classes. “We’ve even made an effort to make changes to the circuit itself,” says Ms. Hull. Atomic Energy of Cana- da is urging the Province to build eight new reactors over the next 20 years to keep up with demand for electricity, and Mayor Mut- ton says the site chosen for the now defunct ITER pro- ject would be perfect. “I’m meeting with AECL this month,” said the mayor. “We’re very excited about the prospect of lo- cating next to the Darling- ton site.” The mayor also wants to speak to Ontario Power Generation, with the mu- nicipality doing everything it can to promote the site to the Province and private- sector investors. The project of choice for the municipality would be Advanced Candu Reactors because they can be built in a short amount of time with a lower price tag of $2.7 billion a pair. As well, the mayor says they can be built without overruns. “It’s good for the public,” he said. “The economic benefits of building anoth- er reactor, from construc- tion to the economic multi- plier effect, are phenome- nal,” he said. “It’s going to create a lot of jobs and, with the University of On- tario offering courses in nu- clear science, it’s the per- fect location.” Durham College has sev- eral programs such as power engineering and non-destructive testing, which is a branch of me- chanical engineering tech- nology, says Gary Polon- sky, president of the Uni- versity of Ontario Institute of Technology and Durham College. “Many of our graduates go on to Ontario Power Generation and Bruce Power,” he added. Mr. Polonsky also says the university, which boasts the largest nuclear program in Canada will be doubling its program next year to meet the demand for strategic personnel in Ontario. The mayor believes building next to Darlington is an advantage over virgin sites. Because the old con- struction roads for Darling- ton are in good repair, ac- cess is already assured. Clarington is comfortable with nuclear reactors and has emergency measures in place. “We meet with the Cana- dian Nuclear Association in February, and the Associa- tion of Nuclear Host Com- munities will be meeting as well,” said Mayor Mutton. “They’ll be putting togeth- er a resolution urging On- tario to commit to building new plants. Clarington and Bruce are willing hosts.” JOHN MUTTON ‘Willing host’ to new reactors. SEVENTH BIRTHDAY Happy seventh birthday for Dominik on Dec. 27. Paul Boyland's team of Chris Janssen, Peter Ste- cyk and Scott March was sidelined in the Third Event semifinal.
