FINANCING UP TO 60 MO.$17,995from$17,995 Budget hole too deep Despite warm weather, clearing costly in 2003 By Danielle Milley Staff Writer PICKERING –November and De- cember may have been mild with little snow, but the unsea- sonable weather wasn’t enough to keep Pickering’s 2003 snow removal budget out of the red. The City decides the budget based on the calendar year so the milder weather that ush- ered out 2003 couldn’t help fill in the hole made in the budget at the start of the year. “The first three months of 2003 pretty well exhausted our budget... We were hoping for a mild November and December so we wouldn’t have to do any plowing,” said Richard Holborn, head of municipal property and engineering with the City. A bit of a cold spell at the end of November-beginning of De- cember as well as a significant snowfall in mid-December meant the City’s crews were sent out six more times before the end of the year. That put the department firmly over budget, although the final number is not in yet. The City budgeted $380,000 for materials, including salt and sand, and $60,000 for overtime. Salt costs $50/tonne and a snowfall, such as the one Pick- ering saw in mid-December, could see upwards of 380 tonnes used. When the area has winter weather like it did at the begin- ning of 2003, Mr. Holborn said the department tries to find other projects in the budget, ✦See Safety page 2 such as sidewalk or storm sewer repairs, that can be postponed to compensate for those expenses. But even if the money isn’t there, the salt trucks and plows still take to the roads. “We don’t stop when the money runs out because safety and getting people around are what’s impor- tant,” Mr. Holborn said. Even though the 2003 budget ended in the red, Mr. Holborn said that doesn’t mean future bud- gets will be bigger because the department looks at average expenditures over a five-year period when requesting funds. “We’re not going to do a knee-jerk reaction and say 2003 was bad we need more (money).” P PAGE 2 NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, January 9, 2004 www.durhamregion.com PICKERING 905-420-0003 1163 Kingston Rd. Ajax Wards 3 and 4 Trustee Lisa Hill said that at a recent symposium for new Ontario trustees, a Catholic school board member noted their stu- dents were called representa- tives to protect them from any legal liability associated with the trustee tag. At the Durham Dis- trict School Board standing committee meeting, she asked if it was an issue the board should look into. Whitby Trustee John Dolstra took the ball and ran with it, saying they should be dubbed representatives. “I felt that he didn’t give us the amount of respect we de- serve,” said student trustee Car- olyn Arbuckle, who attends Dunbarton High School in Pick- ering. “We don’t watch this; we participate. We’re official stake- holders.” “Not only is it disrespectful to us; it’s disrespectful to all stu- dents,” added Liam Mooney, a student trustee and Dr. F. J. Donevan Collegiate Institute pupil. “It shows that they don’t respect what the students have to say.” At a November meeting for student trustees that Ontario Education Minister Gerard Kennedy attended, they said he referred to them as trustees. “So?” Trustee Dolstra re- sponded in an interview when told the students were steamed. He said it’s up to the Province to determine what the students are called, and wouldn’t state a preference. “To me it doesn’t matter,” said Trustee Dolstra. “I don’t care ei- ther way.” However he says he’s glad the students sit at the table with trustees. Trustee Hill said she was mo- tivated by a concern for the stu- dents’ well-being, and did not in- tend to slight them or create a stir. She and Mr. Mooney spoke immediately after the meeting. “It’s all good now,” said Trustee Hill. Mr. Mooney says he took Trustee Dolstra’s comments as a slight. “We’re always fighting to have a voice and when something is so out of line, comes out of nowhere like that, it defeats what we’re trying to accom- plish,” he says. The former Tory government mandated pupil representation on school boards beginning in the 1999/00 school year. The stu- dents bring their peers’ con- cerns to their respective board, and while they take part in dis- cussions and vote on issues, their vote is not counted. At the Durham Catholic Dis- trict School Board, the students are called representatives. “They are referred to in the Education Act... as student rep- resentatives on the board of trustees,” said board chairman Mary Ann Martin. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, January 9, 2004 PAGE 3 P WALLPAPER CENTRE “We go to the wall for you!” ALL IN-STOCK WALLPAPER & BORDERS VISIT OUR “KIDS KORNER” 2004 COLORS FOR THE HOME AS SEEN ON CITYLINE STOREWIDE MARKDOWNS MON FRI 9 30 9 00 SAT 9 30 5 30 SUN 12 00 4 00 1652 Bayly St. W. There have been no reports of such incidents received by the service and if there were, it would be taken seriously and fully inves- tigated, says Superintendent Bill Crate. The false claim in the e-mails is that the needles are HIV positive and 17 people have been infected, he states. The current hoax is being at- tributed to an individual claiming to be a Captain Abraham Sands of the Ontario Provincial Police Department. There isn’t anyone by that name employed by the OPP. Also, the OPP doesn’t have the rank of captain and it’s a ser- vice, not a department, the super- intendent notes. Similar hoaxes have circulated for years using the names of vari- ous police agencies and person- nel. He says the hoax originated with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s De- partment in June 2000. Supt. Crate says it was a hoax then and it’s gradually made it’s way north. “The e-mail remains the same, except for the police department,” he says. “They’re trying to foster fear in folks. New yield law won’t have big impact in Ajax and Pickering DURHAM –It won’t have a big impact in Ajax and Pickering, but transit of- ficials welcome the new provincial law requiring drivers to yield to buses leaving bus bays. Ted Galinis, general manager of the Ajax Pickering Transit Authority, called the law “very positive.” The new regulations came into ef- fect Jan. 2 and require motorists to yield to buses exiting bus bays on the side of a road. “We tend not to have many cut- ins,” Mr. Galinis notes. “The TTC has more.” While there aren’t many bus bays here, he says the law is good because “it helps us move,” adding it should help ensure “time commitments” are met. “We had to make sure all the (bus) drivers were aware of it. There will be a transition period. It will take time for drivers to adjust.” Drivers charged under the new law face fines of between $60 and $500. The government wants to create set fines so offenders can pay out of court, just like other traffic tickets. New yield to bus decals have been applied to the rear of buses through- out the province. The new provincial law, “will help improve transit service reliability and transit flow,” says Ontario Trans- portation Minister Harinder Takhar in a press release. TED GALINIS ‘It will take time for drivers to adjust.’ Gets at least 10 years for murder with hammer By Stephen Shaw Staff Writer DURHAM – An Oshawa man who confessed to bludgeoning his es- tranged wife to death with a hammer as she slept has been sentenced to life imprisonment with no chance of parole for 10 years. John Michael England, 30, who has lived on and off in Ajax, waived his right to a preliminary hearing in provincial court and pleaded guilty as charged to sec- ond-degree murder Tuesday. The truck driver killed Laura England, 30, in their Down Cres- cent home in Oshawa following an argument Feb. 27, 2003 over their failed marriage, court heard. The couple married in 1998 and had a stormy relation- ship during which they would often fight about their opposite lifestyles and financial problems. The marriage went from bad to worse when Mrs. England, who worked as a club promoter, was drawn into the illegal drug world, according to an agreed statement of facts read by prose- cutor Sue MacLean. When the couple separated in October 2002, Mr. England slept at home on a living-room couch or stayed at his girlfriend’s Ajax apartment, she said. On Feb. 27, Mrs. England came home from visiting her mother and the pair got into a heated ar- gument that continued late into the evening. She eventually retired for the night to the master bedroom, court heard. Sometime in the early hours of Feb. 28, Mr. England picked up a hammer and hit his wife repeat- edly on the head as she lay asleep in bed. After the killing, Mr. England washed the murder weapon, left the home, booked off sick from work and concocted a phoney alibi to cover his tracks. He later returned to the home - where his wife’s body lay undis- covered for a week - to retrieve the hammer, which he then hid in a toolbox at his girlfriend’s apartment on Exeter Road. Mrs. England’s mother, Arlene Street, had become worried about her daughter when she hadn’t heard from her in several days, and on March 6 went to the home where she discovered the grisly murder scene, court heard. “The memory and horror of finding Laura’s damaged body will never be erased,” Mrs. Street said in an impact statement that described sleepless nights, end- less tears and agonizing heartache since her daughter’s death. After a three-month investiga- tion by homicide detectives J. J. Allan and Dave Henderson, Mr. England was arrested June 24 and confessed to the crime. He said he felt he “had no other option” but to kill his es- tranged wife, whom he claimed threatened to “take him to the cleaners,” court was told. Police located the hammer and forensic tests found Mrs. England’s DNA on the weapon. Mr. England was described by his lawyer as a “mild, passive, quiet person” who had no prior history of violence, a man pushed beyond his limits. “He’s a person who in a given moment lost it,” said Mr. Sosna. Family members of Mrs. Eng- land, seated in the courtroom in a row opposite relatives of the defendant, appeared unmoved as Mr. England, sporting a shaved head and a goatee, stood in court and read an apology. “I’m sorry for the pain I caused everyone. I know what I did was wrong. To Laura’s family, I am truly sorry for what I’ve done,” he said. In a victim impact statement, Dennis Oldham lashed out at the former son-in-law who be- trayed and killed his only daugh- ter. “Time could never heal the pain that we feel inside... It is something we will be sentenced with for the rest of our lives,” Mr. Oldham said. Justice Edwin Minden called it a “brutal, callous and cowardly” murder and accepted the sen- tence jointly proposed by the Crown and defence. He noted Mr. England, who was an active volunteer with the Ajax Sea Cadets, has shown remorse and spared the victim’s family a trial and further trauma. www.durhamregion.com NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, January 9, 2004 PAGE 5 A/P PICKERING TOWN CENTRE 13 55 KINGSTON RD (905) 837-1166 GROOMING SALON OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK Call for an appointment NEW! You can add diverse, historic, traditional and celebra- tory to the snapshot of Ajax and Pickering as well, as we've come a long way these past few decades. Just ask Ajax resident Mateen Khaja, who recalls being one of the few minorities at Ajax High School just 15 years ago. Now, he'd have plenty of company. According to 2001 Statistics Canada figures, there are 62,520 visible minorities in Durham Region, or, about 12 per cent of the population. Break it down further and just more than 65 per cent of this segment live in Ajax and Pickering, which is about 25 per cent of the communities' combined population. In the year ahead, the News Advertiser is examining our evolving communities through a series of monthly features. What's driving the changes; what barriers have we overcome, and which remain? How are schools, police officers and com- munity organizations adapting to the changes? We'll look at how families manage to balance and maintain their traditions, celebrations and lifestyle from a homeland so far away, amongst holidays, ceremonies and institutions common here. Already we've learned the cultural makeup has come a long way, but clearly there's still more work to be done. Mr. Khaja has been working hard to erase the prejudice created towards Muslims in our post-Sept. 11 world, producing a video and part- nering with local police and the school boards, among others. For Susan Maturine, of the Pickering Carib Canadian Cultur- al Association, one of the big challenges is involving more youth in the community. Getting their volunteer numbers up and building a greater level of trust with police are among her chief concerns. Or, consider that there's not a visible minority among our municipal, school, provincial and federal political representa- tives. We clearly need to see expanded fields of candidates down the road to offer the one-in-four of our population a greater choice. That diverse population, which is expanding, growing and evolving, has only made Ajax and Pickering a better place to live. But in the months and years ahead there are so many more steps still to be taken, so much ground to be covered. Editorials &Opinions FRIDAY, JANUARY 9, 2004 ✦ News Advertiser ✦ DAVID STELL, NEWS EDITOR, 905-683-5110 EXT. 249 Editorial Principals, teachers or par- ents sometimes call me say- ing, 'I wanted you to come take a picture of something we're doing at our school but didn't know how to go about it.' 'You're off to great start,' I reply. As a new calendar year begins, perhaps parents and school staff could use a mini-course on what we're looking for when we come out to take a picture at a school. News- papers are mysterious entities to many people, so don't feel bad if this is all new to you. First off, you have to call us, and you have to give us some advance notice. Calling the day of an event is a long shot at best, but a day or even two days before only im- proves the odds a little. The earlier you call, the more likely we will be able to make it. Second, understand that our focus is on taking an eye-catching photo our readers want to learn more about. If your students have raised $10,000 for a worthy cause, they are to be commended. But a picture of 'the big cheque' being handed over to a charity, or stu- dents holding a plaque that recog- nizes their efforts, just doesn't make for an interesting picture. Often students will have done some fun activities to raise the cash. That's when we want to come, when it's likely we'll capture students in action. Third, and carrying on with the good photo theme, the fewer peo- ple in the picture the better. Ideal- ly, there should be just one to three kids/people in the photo. You guessed it: that means if 20 kids are involved in a food drive or some other endeavour, you'll have to whittle the number down. I know they all deserve to be in the pic- ture, however they can't be. A pic- ture of five or 10 kids won't catch the editor's eye or the reader's eye. Finally, consider that it's not only the highlights of your school year that are photo worthy. One of our photographers recently re- marked that he likes to drop in at a school unannounced, check in at the office and look for shots. Kids working on a science project, stu- dents doing a craft, you name it: there are lots of great photo oppor- tunities. I have found that when a school appoints someone, from the school community council for example, to work with the media, things gener- ally run pretty smoothly. We w ant to come out and take photos. Call us and we probably will. Mike Ruta’s column appears every third Friday. Getting a picture in the paper is a snap Mike Ruta S t a f f W r i t e r Privacy, what privacy? To the editor: Lately, there has been a flurry of mail from various companies we do business with related to some changes in the Right to Privacy Legislation. The prob- lem I have is there is so much verbiage and mumbo-jumbo, that I, a former teacher, cannot totally grasp the ramifi- cations of the changes. The bottom line seems to be that con- sumers' rights can only be fully protected by having their names removed from the records of the business, which means, of course, severing ties. So one cannot trav- el on the 407 ETR without agreeing to give up some rights to 'privacy.' Another aspect is the consumer must be the one to take action by mailing, at his own expense, a written request to have his name removed. It seems to me businesses suddenly have more power over our private lives but their responsi- bility is just to notify us of the new rules. Shouldn't they be required to send a stamped, self-addressed request for per- mission to use the person's personal in- formation in the numerous ways covered in the new law? Companies can exchange more infor- mation about my wife and sons than I can get when I am dealing with concerns that are shared within our household. Some day, we're going to wake up and re- alize, too late, we have no rights and we have no freedom. In an effort to increase the diver- sion of waste from landfills from 45 to 60 per cent by 2008, the McGuinty government approved a blue box pro- gram that encourages manufacturers to reduce packaging. Developed by Waste Diversion Ontario, the plan will see approximately $3 million per month flow from industry to munici- palities starting early in 2004. “This is terrific news for Durham Region,” said commissioner of works Cliff Curtis. “This is a 50-50 funding partnership between the municipality and those industries which generate products, packages and containers residents put in their blue boxes for recycling. It’s estimated the Region will receive about $1.5 million per year though this funding initiative.” By 2006, 50 per cent of waste will be diverted from landfill. Expansion of the type of materials suitable for re- covery is also part of the plan. On- tario Environment Minister Leona Dombrowsky is asking WDO to sub- mit an updated plan by March 2004 that includes the new materials. “We plan on phasing in a ban on or- ganic waste in our landfills because we believe organic waste is a resource, not garbage,” said Ms. Dombrowsky. In Durham, a plan for organic waste removal has already begun. “The Region is progressively mov- ing forward on its food-waste collec- tion program,” said Mr. Curtis. “To date, more than 1,800 tonnes of food waste have been diverted from landfill disposal. Residents who have receive Green Bins are encouraged to fully participate each week in this impor- tant program.” The program is a joint effort be- tween Stewardship Ontario, an in- dustry-funded organization made up of brand owners and first importers of products that contribute to blue box waste, and WDO. Waste Diver- sion Ontario was created by the Waste Diversion Act in June 2002 and is a permanent non-Crown corpora- tion made up of municipal, industry, government and non-governmental organization representatives. DURHAM –Employers are expected to be hiring at a slow pace during the first quarter of 2004, says the latest Manpower Employ- ment Outlook Survey. The survey shows only 10 per cent of interviewed companies in Durham in- tend to hire between Janu- ary and March, said Laura Brodie of Manpower’s Pick- ering office. Another 12 per cent plan on reducing their work- force, while 76 per cent plan to maintain levels and 2 per cent are uncertain. Nationally, education, fi- nance, insurance and real estate are the most opti- mistic with hiring plans for the first quarter. A weaker picture is reported in man- ufacturing, services, trans- portation and public utili- ties. “The first quarter is typi- cally a reserved hiring peri- od and this year is no differ- ent,” said Lori Procher, vice-president and general manager for Manpower Canada. Red Cross asking everyone to support Iranians DURHAM –Any extra dollars Canadians can spare to donate to the victims of a Boxing Day earthquake in Iran, which levelled the city of Bam, will help, says the Canadian Red Cross. “We’ve received over $1,000 in two days,” said George Daniels, community services assistant for the Red Cross’s Durham branch. A box was also requested and set up in Pick- ering at the Petro Canada on the corner of Liv- erpool and Kingston Road. “People can request boxes for their area,” said co-ordinator Chris Merlin, “we’d be glad to bring them or they can donate directly at the branch, or by phone using their credit card or send a cheque by mail.” Ms. Merlin says the Red Cross is known worldwide for providing relief to disaster zones and this fame means it never has to operate fund-raising campaigns because the communi- ty normally seeks it out. “We’ll keep collecting funds for Iranian earth- quake victims until the demand isn’t there, but these people are going to need help for a long time,” said Ms. Merlin. The Dec. 26 earthquake registered 6.3 on the Richter scale and claimed more than 30,000 lives. Bam is located in southeastern Iran, south of the Iranian capital of Teheran. The Red Cross estimates that 60 per cent of the buildings and homes in Bam have been badly damaged or de- stroyed. “The Red Cross only accepts monetary dona- tions because of the cost of shipping items,” said Ms. Merlin. “We purchase items directly in the affected country and that helps their economy as well.” The International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC) and Red Crescent Societies have re- ceived $100,000 from the Canadian Red Cross and $750,000 from the Canadian International Development Agency. The money donated so far has helped provide basic emergency assis- tance and relief items. “The Red Cross only accepts monetary dona- tions because of the cost of shipping items,” said Ms. Merlin. “We purchase items directly in the affected country and that helps their economy as well.” The Red Cross is also using its Restoring Family Links service which helps establish lines of communication between earthquake affected family members in Iran and Canada. For more information, call 1-800-418-1111 or the Durham branch at 905-723-2933. All funds not used for this disaster will trans- ferred to the International Disaster Relief Fund. A DVERTISING FEATURE Thinking of updating one of the rooms in your home but can’t afford a complete redecoration? Why not try a fresh coat of paint? Not only is this one of the easiest and most affordable ways of creating an entirely different look and feel to a room, but it’s also a great weekend project that only requires a minimal level of preparation. Naturally, your first step is to decide on a paint colour as well as the type of paint you will use. One option is non-toxic latex paint; it dries quickly and makes cleaning paintbrushes and rollers easy. Another option is alkyd-based paint, which offers a smoother finish and is easy to care for. But before opening the paint can, you should first clean and degrease all surfaces to be To g et th e b es t res u l t s f rom a pai n t j ob, m a k e s u re you choo se the ri g h t m a t er i a ls ... a n d c o lour, o f c o u rs e! painted, and sand down glossy surfaces. Then, be sure to thoroughly cover any surface you don’t want painted with masking tape. Next, apply that all-important coat of primer to the walls. If you are using latex paint on a new surface, the primer should also be latex-based. If you’re applying latex paint to an already- painted surface, sand it first and then apply a coat of solvent-based primer that will work well with both types of paint. Using a brush, start with all areas around the door and window frames, as well as along the corners of walls. Then, fill in larger areas with a roller, working in sections of about one square metre. Stick to the W-technique if you are painting the ceiling and the M-technique for walls. Without lifting the roller, fill in the unpainted area around the letter you have just painted and continue in this fashion until the entire surface is covered. Now you are ready to apply your new paint colour! Just remember to follow these same painting techniques. At that point, any cool surface - most visibly your windows - will be the recipient of wetness and water. If uncontrolled, excessive moisture can lead to rotting of walls, wood, and window frames. It can also lead to unhealthy mould. To prevent damage and mould growth, consider two plans of action: 1. Monitor indoor humidity; 2. Replace windows with innovative technology to control condensation. 1. Monitor Indoor Humidity The first step is to determine the actual humidity level in your home. This will need to be monitored regularly as the temperature outside fluctuates. Devices called hygrometers measure humidity and can be purchased at leading hardware stores. To help with humidity control, here are a few things you can do: • Check and service your humidifier to be sure it is working correctly. • Tu rn humidifier down as weather becomes colder. • Open up all vents to the outside. • Vent attic and crawl spaces. • Run exhaust fans while cooking or bathing. • Install energy efficient windows. 2. Top Technology Windows To control condensation and mould growth: • Be discriminating when buying windows. Avoid those made with highly conductive m etal materials, like aluminum or stainless steel spacers around the edges. Foam spacers are best for maintaining the warmest overall surface temperature, thus reducing condensation. This is an important feature for energy conservation too. • Ask questions. If you can’t tell if the spacer is metal for example, ask the retailer or manufacturer. Metal edgings are usually wrapped in butyl rubber, making the contents difficult to recognize. • Avoid plastic spacers. The rigidity of plastic can cause seal failure, which can literally crack the glass edges on extremely cold or hot days. • Front door windows and side lites could be energy wasters too. Decorative windows can be manufactured with the same superior thermal characteristics as those in the rest of your windows. Canadian manufacturers using foam Super Spacers can be located at www.healthsmartwindows.com. In the past several years cruise lines have sought to give passengers more dining flexibility. Alternative restaurants are now available on virtually ever y large ship and many smaller ones, while open-seating options have been introduced on numerous new ships. In the “traditional” dining scenario, passengers are informed of their seating assignments upon boarding. Dining times and table size are based on requests made at the time of booking depending on availability. G uests are assigned to a specific table in either the early (around 6 or 6:30 p.m.) or the late (around 8 or 8:30 p.m.) seating. Passengers dine with the same tablemates and are served by the same wait staff each night of the cruise. Many passengers prefer traditional dining because it gives them an opportunity to get to know their tablemates and wait staff, and it allows the wait staff to learn preferences and anticipate requests after a night or two, leading to more personalized service. On the other hand, assigned seating forces passengers to plan activities around their dinner time, which may be inconvenient on days when the ship is in port. Ships with open seating operate their main dining rooms much like land-based restaurants the dining room is open for dinner during set hours, and guests may dine when and with whom they please during those hours. This dining style allows guests to choose their tablemates (or dine alone) and plan their meals around their daily activities rather than planning activities around an assigned dinner time. On the flip side, some feel they do not receive the same personalized ser vice since the wait staff changes each night. Also, as with many busy restaurants, guests may have to wait to be seated and service may be a bit slower during the most popular times. The great majority of ships offer one or more “alternative” restaurants in addition to their main dining rooms, ranging from 24- hour buffets to high-end specialty restaurants. These alternative restaurants typically have open seating regardless of the main dining room’s guidelines, though many require reservations (which are made onboard the ship) and there may be a per- person surcharge for specialty restaurants. For more information on dining options when you cruise, call one of our knowledgeable cruise specialists at CruiseShipCenters at 905-619-0323. Durham Region has banned the plastic bag. Ya rd trimmings, including leaves, set out at curbside in plas- tic bags will not be collected any longer. The decision comes from the fact plastic causes problems at composting facilities. As well, bits of plastic in the finished com- post results in an inferior prod- uct. Your alternatives are to either compost your leaf and yard debris or to put it in the biodegradable brown paper bags the Region will collect. Given the fact regular plastic bags take from to 10 to 20 years to decompose, maybe 2004 is the year to consider a tax on plastic shopping bags. The tax would not apply for those who tote string or cloth bags, pre-used grocery bags, hampers, or select boxes from the stores (which include LCBO out- lets) where employees pile them near the exit. Some grocers charge a few pen- nies for bags, thus encouraging customers to help themselves to boxes. Others will give a rebate for each bag brought in and filled by the shopper. Although the in- tent is to reduce reliance on plas- tic carrying bags, neither of these ideas is promoted adequately to encourage people to change their habits. In various American states, leg- islators are considering taxes or an all-out ban on plastic bags. Such taxation, which would be welcomed by the Ontario Envi- ronmental Network, is not a unique idea. It was done in Ire- land, with great success, where the government introduced a 15- cent tax on each plastic bag. Con- sumption of bags, not groceries, dropped by 95 percent. Bangladesh and Taiwan have introduced similar measures, with Australia, Scotland and the city of Shanghai expecting to fol- low suit. California has devised legislation to tackle the problem, but it is under attack from gro- cery store chains, which argue the extra calculation at the checkout would be too cumbersome. How- ever, a tax of 25 cents would be easy enough to add quickly. The money could be forwarded into an environmental fund to support other 3Rs programs. To go a step further, shoppers can also reuse those bags for gathering small loose produce such as mushrooms or utilize the lightweight mesh bags from or- anges and onions, which also make rinsing produce more con- venient. Changing habits is not impossi- ble, and nothing will make people shift quicker than a sizeable tax, a service cancelled, or Air Miles of- fered for each reused bag! Remember when we became a society with too many telephones and fax machines and not enough numbers? Well, we also have too many people generating too much garbage with nowhere to put it if the U.S. border becomes closed to our waste. We must look beyond recycling to solve our garbage woes. GREEN TIP: If purchasing kitchen utensils, look for items that are neither wrapped in plas- tic nor mounted on cardboard. COMING EVENT: Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington hosts a ‘compost matters’ work- shop Jan. 21 and 22. It is spon- sored by the Composting Council of Canada. Call 416-535-0240. Affectionately called Lisa’s Beads, this endless array of bracelets, created by her fam- ily in loving memory and sold word-of-mouth to raise money for cancer research, appeared shortly after Mrs. McBride died of non- Hodgkin’s lymphoma on July 6. “Within a week it caught on... it’s something that’s growing rather fast,” said her widower, Doug, adding the entire project is the work of his two daughters, Spencer, 11 , and Taylor, 9, and three nieces Shannon, Kristie and Hannah. “It shows nothing less than great strength on their part, and it’s a comment on how well my children are doing de- spite the lost of my wife,” he said. “They cannot bring back their mom, or their aunt as the case may be, but they are helping to keep her memory alive and very strong.” A tag accompanies each bracelet with a description of Mrs. McBride. On the other side, words explain the girls’ ambition with mention that all proceeds go to cancer re- search. They also make neck- laces, anklets and rings. “Anything made out of beads,” said Spencer, who, with her sister and cousins, presented a cheque for $1,029 to the Canadian Cancer Soci- ety in Newmarket on Dec. 29 from the sale of Lisa’s Beads. “I’m glad I’m doing some- thing for others.” “Pretty good for four month’s work...but it’s not stopping here,” Mr. McBride said. “It’s a continuing effort. We’re hoping it will become even bigger.” “Those of us who knew and loved Lisa are moved by what these youngsters are doing. I’m touched because I know it would have touched my wife. (She) was just a heroine in my eyes for what she had to deal with, and my kids are equally heroic.” Mr. McBride said Lisa’s Beads is growing so fast the girls have a hard time filling orders for neighbours and friends. He said he’s surprised with the project’s momentum, adding he received a call one day for 30 bracelets. Spencer said her cousin Shannon came up with the original idea for Lisa’s Beads, and then the other girls quickly joined the project. “I’ve been funding it, but they’ve wanted to pay for it,” Mr. McBride said of the bracelets. “I’m not a crafty guy. N one of them have been pushed. It was entirely in- spired and carried out by them.” Wo rd of the kids’ efforts has spread through a number of communities in southern On- tario, he said. Mr. McBride’s nieces live in Mount Forest, and he said Hospice in Orillia is using the youngsters as an example of how children can channel positive energy from grief. “If five kids can make over $1 ,000, how much can 5,000 kids make?” he asked. “We think it’s a great outlet, par- ticularly for those dealing with loss. They’re not helpless - they can do something.” Mr. McBride is now ap- proaching teachers and health-care professionals about Lisa’s Beads, hoping to expand the project by provid- ing bead-making kits to chil- dren in schools to raise money for cancer research, starting at his daughter’s school, St. Luke the Evangelist in Whit- by. “People who see the bracelets or hear about them are amazed that children so young have initiated doing something so wonderful,” he said. He said his wife would also have been more than proud. “She was a beautiful human being; mother of two kids. She was a probation officer for 13 years here in Durham, posi- tive and assertive. She’d prob- ably shed a tear.” A/P PAGE 22 NEWS ADVERTISER, FRIDAY EDITION, January 9, 2004 www.durhamregion.com Dental Care for Adults, Kids and Great Big Babies. Ann Dolishny helped get first-diagnosis group established By Shelley Jordan Staff Writer DURHAM –When multiple scle- rosis caused Ann Dolishny to go blind, she fought back by open- ing the eyes of other sufferers. Before Ms. Dolishny discov- ered she had the disease, a first- diagnosis group didn’t exist in Durham Region. Using her back- ground as public relations officer for the region, she pulled some strings and created a Web of in- formation for those trapped by their symptoms. “A neurologist’s way of dealing with an MS patient is to say, “Adieu” after they diagnose,” said Ms. Dolishny. “So I asked the MS Society if they had any support groups for newly diag- nosed patients in Durham.” When Ms. Dolishny heard back from the MS Society she was asked if she wanted to at- tend a seminar for MS sufferers. Before long she was facilitating a group of three members. When the number rose to 10, her triplex apartment wasn’t large enough to accommodate. “It was sheer luck that a differ- ent organization was dissolving,” said Ms. Dolishny,” and they said ‘Why don’t you take the room we have?’ So we are now located in a brand new facility in a senior’s complex in Whitby.” The group, called Living with MS, presently has 28 members, with Ms. Dolishny as Durham’s official facilitator. It has changed from first diagnosis to a general MS group, but the focus remains on information-gathering and providing support for anyone who needs it. Multiple sclerosis results when the protective coating which surrounds nerves, called myelin, becomes damaged and leaves behind scarred and hard- ened nerves that are unable to communicate information along the normal nervous system pathway. Different parts of the brain, spinal cord and optical nerves can be affected by the disease, which can lead such conditions as blindness, numbness of limbs, pain, slurred speech and lack of co-ordination to name just a few. Ms. Dolishny says there are many things people with MS can do to improve their condition, though there is presently no cure for the disease. “Yoga has to do with stretch- ing, and endorphins become re- leased from tissues,” said Ms. Dolishny. “It’s an incredible nat- ural high, and keeps you flexible. If you can lift a finger, you can do yoga.” Ms. Dolishny also rides horse- back at Cedar Valley Riding Sta- bles near Port Perry as therapy for the spirit and body. She says the experience allows her a sense of freedom she hasn’t been able to enjoy for years. “The feeling of anger prevails a lot, and my spirit feels trapped,” she said, “but that changes when I ride Trooper.” Living with MS meets the first Tuesday of each month from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Senior Citi- zen’s Complex in Whitby on the corner of Burns and Green Streets. With the OHA Ontario Provin- cial Junior 'A' Hockey League club absorbing a 7-6 shoot-out loss to the Markham Waxers at the Pickering Recreation Com- plex on Wednesday night, the club is looking to make some changes for the remainder of the reg ular season, the playoffs and beyond for the young team, which has underachieved for most of the season. "We're always looking to im- prove," says John Winder, the Panthers head coach and general manager. "We want to make a team that people want to come to next year. I'm not happy at all with the game preparation, so therefore we're making changes. In general, we want to develop more urgency in terms of prepa- ration and the way they play the game." The changes have begun in earnest, with the releasing of goaltender Devin Ramasawmy this week and the subsequent signing of former Brampton Cap- itals goaltender John Da Ponte, who played sparingly this year with the West Conference club. "We thought he would bring a little more experience to the net for us," says Winder. Da Ponte was given a baptism by fire by the Panthers who, after signing him earlier in the week, used him against Markham on Wednesday night. Although he was beaten for all seven goals, Winder says there's reason for optimism. "He hadn't played in a while, but, at times, he was brilliant. He'll be fine if we give him more protection. In fairness, I don't think we played well defensively." The Panthers also brought in forward Chris Wood, formerly of the Bowmanville Eagles of the league's East Conference. He was picked up for future considera- tions and cash. The Pickering juniors (10-21-7-0 for 27 points, eighth in South Conference) dropped their 21st game of the season with Wednes- day's loss to Markham. The Pan- thers trailed by three goals at one point, but were able to knot the score at 5-5 and 6-6 before Markham's Darryl Flowers net- ted the game-winning goal with 4:39 remaining in the third peri- od. Winder says the players brought a mixed bag in terms of effort to the ice, which didn't add up to a win in the final analysis. "At times, we played deter- mined and at times we kind of let off a bit too much. The biggest thing was they lost the one-on- one battles," explained Winder. Danny Sullivan and Ryan An- nesley led the way with two goals apiece; Andrew Dissanayake and Kyle Cunningham added one apiece. Kyle Robinson chipped in with three assists, Paul Rivest, Sullivan, Cunningham, Derek Lynden, Wood, Annesley, Michael Worrell, Craig Johnston and Phil McIlhone each had one. Da Ponte allowed seven goals on 35 shots. The Panthers play tonight (Friday) against the Thornhill Major Islanders at the complex at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, the Pan- thers are in Toronto to play the first-place St. Michael's Buzzers. The Panthers lost 7-6. Battle of undefeated clubs all St. Mary By Al Rivett Sports Editor PICKERING —A total shocker. That's how best to sum up the Durham Region senior boys' bas- ketball game between two city ri- vals, the St. Mary Catholic Sec- ondary School Monarchs and the Pine Ridge Secondary School Pumas. Shocking because an expected close game Thursday afternoon between two undefeated and GTA-ranked squads never mate- rialized. Outside of the opening few minutes of play, it was all Monarchs, dominating in all facets of the game in a thorough 72-44 drubbing of the Pumas in a league game at Pine Ridge. The victory takes the Monarchs to a perfect 6-0 in Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) 'AAAA' league play. The Pumas, meanwhile, fell to 5-1. St. Mary led 15-9 at the end of the first quarter, and then took control in the second, leading by 14 at the interval. Pine Ridge be- came unhinged in the second quarter as the shots wouldn't fall and they were whistled for a flood of fouls -- 17 in the first half. The Monarchs continued to pour it on in the second half, lead- ing by 23 points (54-31) after the third quarter. The visitors led by as much as 30 with about two minutes to go when both clubs put in their backups. No one was more shocked at the lopsided outcome than St. Mary head coach Mike Gorden- sky. "Believe me, I'm the most sur- prised of anyone at the score of that game," says Gordensky. "I was confident we could beat them. We're maybe a little bit deeper than them. But, they have tough defence and they can really come after you. Pumas' head coach Cameron Nekkers noted Pine Ridge's star player, guard Rohan Burrell, had a rare bad outing, going 0-for-12 from the field and 2-for-8 from the foul line to put up only two points. "I've never seen Rohan play like that in the three years I've coached him. He's our leader," says Nekkers. Nekkers, however, says that the bad loss could be a good thing, citing his players may have been a tad overconfident coming into the game, based on their past suc- cesses on the court this season. "I think they were feeling too good about themselves and I think this will bring them crash- ing down to reality," says Nekkers. "We got our butts kicked today." For their part, the Monarchs brought their 'A' game, playing tenacious defence, as well as run- ning their offence to perfection. But, mostly, Gordensky was unre- served about his team's defensive effort. "I thought we played outstand- ing defence today. I thought de- fence was the key to the game," he says. Nathan Thomas led the way with 15 points, followed by Erik Glavic with 14, Sean Maingot with 13 and Jason Bulgin with 12. Louis Savoury netted six for the Pumas. Fisher, Aisha May 29th, 1978 ~ January 6th, 2003 Aisha's Tooth Bearing Smile With every moment of every day, Something reminds me of your jovial way. A tooth bearing smile, a bit of comic relief, It reminds me of you, but with great disbelief That you're no longer with us, To have and to hold To share special occasions together 'til old. Your nieces speak of you like you are still here Though far,far away, you're still yet so near. Mom, is being brave, Though we can all see the pain. All your siblings continue living, But the thought of your name Causes us to sigh with no answers to why, We just look up to the heavens, and instead of a cry, We then think of your beautiful tooth bearing smile, And whisper to ourselves that we'll see you again in a while Missing you, love Mom, Karl, Tania, Natalie, Tenesha and Morgan.
