Durham Regional Police began investigating after the teen told a friend she was punched, slapped, spat on and struck with a hanger by her mother. Police said the girl, who suffered minor injuries, also reported she had been assaulted on several prior occasions by her father, including being hit with a belt, and being forced to sleep outside with no blankets with her 12-year-old sister. The 37-year-old mother was ar- rested early Thursday morning at the family residence while the fa- ther was taken into custody later, police said. Both face charges of assault with a weapon. The father is also charged with breach of recog- nizance. They were held pending bail hearings Friday. The children are currently stay- ing with relatives and friends. Pair guilty in kidnapping Pickering man to be sentenced in January BY STEPHEN SHAW Staff Writer DURHAM –– A Superior Court jury needed just more than two hours of deliberations Thurs- day before convicting a Pickering man and his pal of kidnapping, confining and brutally beating an Oshawa mother of two. Dwayne Kevin George, 21, for- merly of Geta Circle, and Jason Brown-Campbell, 19, of Scarbor- ough, were found guilty of 15 charges including break and enter, kidnapping, assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm. A third man, Jerome Brown, 20, of Scarborough, was acquitted of an assault charge. Mr. George was also convicted of assault and confinement for holding the victim’s head under scalding water the day before the kidnapping. The pair will be sentenced by Madam Justice Myrna Lack on Jan. 3, 2002. Court heard Danielle Bongard, 20, was confronted by Mr. George, her controlling ex-boyfriend, and Mr. Brown-Campbell, who had been hiding in a cupboard in her Linden Court townhouse May 3, 2000. Mr. George punched and kicked Ms. Bongard in the head and body, shaved her head, ripped a ring out of her eyebrow, shoved a butcher knife in her mouth and took her to a forest in Scarbor- ough, jurors were told. Ms. Bongard, a reluctant Crown witness, had been jailed last year after refusing to testify against her attackers during earlier court proceedings. During the trial she testified Mr. George continuously beat her in the wooded area until she See WOMAN page 2 Burglar leaves rifles, ammo behind AJAX ––A barking dog may have given a burglar cold feet leading to the recovery of eight rifles and ammunition taken from a Wickens Crescent home. Durham Regional Police said a Pollard Crescent resi- dent’s attention was drawn to her backyard after her dog started barking at 2:30 p.m. Thursday. The woman contacted po- lice after she found the rifles and a gym bag containing a box of ammunition, computer games and compact discs. A short time later police re- ceived a call from a Wickens Crescent resident who reported the burglary and theft. No ar- rests have been made. When she regained consciousness, she was struck with sticks and rocks by Mr. Brown- Campbell and a second man, whose face was con- cealed. Mr. George stood and watched. Ms. Bongard eventually went with Mr. George in a rented car to Montreal - ad- mittedly with her consent - and was found by police May 13, 2000 crouched in a hotel room closet, her body covered in cuts and bruises. She testified she was or- dered to stay in the closet by Mr. George for refusing to eat plastic. Court was told in March 2000 Mr. George was charged with setting Ms. Bongard’s apartment on fire and killing her cat. Ms. Bongard recanted her police statement and the charges were dropped. NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, December 9, 2001 PAGE 3 P Matthew Jones works to end road scourge DURHAM ––A boy who knows first-hand the devastation caused by drinking and driving has given a special Christmas gift to those trying wipe it out. Matthew Jones was just three-years- old when his parents were killed by a drunk driver on Nov. 2, 1991. This week, the 13-year-old Good- wood boy did something about it. Paid for with his own money, Matthew do- nated a Drinking and Driving Offences Roadmap CD-Rom to assist local offi- cers in the ongoing effort to stop drink- ing and driving in Durham Region. The roadmap was developed in part- nership with police and is a compre- hensive resource on impaired driving based on broad specific operational ex- perience, police officials said. The CD includes text, graphics, animation and video segments, including some actual police footage. It will also provide for access to relevant case law through a hyperlink to the Canadians for Safe and Sober Driving Web site. Impaired driving remains the lead- ing criminal cause of death in Canada. Yet experts says it has become an in- creasingly technical charge and one of the most difficult charges to prosecute. Matthew’s parents, Lisa Northeast- Jones and her husband, Gary, were killed by a man who crashed his van into their vehicle after he had been drinking at a Legion hall. Pickering Chief Administra- tive Officer Tom Quinn con- firmed Tuesday he and City Solicitor John Reble were cur- rently conducting a review of the case, but could not say when their findings would be presented to Council. The case involves Pickering residents Fred and Barbara Beer, who filed a civil case against their neighbours, John and Julia Hayes, and the City, after several complaints about the Hayes failed to stop them from parking heavy trucks and other equipment on their north Pickering property. In his decision, Justice Don- ald Ferguson of Ontario Supe- rior Court said the City inter- fered with a bylaw officer’s en- forcement duties by holding a meeting, after which the Hayes were permitted to continue running the business at the agriculturally and residentially zoned property. His Sept. 14 decision stated, “The City apparently chose to ignore the overwhelming evi- dence provided by the neigh- bours and to broker a political deal with the Hayes only. I rec- ognize that the City and its of- ficials are entitled to some def- erence in interpreting and ap- plying their own bylaws. How- ever, I conclude the position of the City concerning compli- ance with this bylaw is patent- ly unreasonable.” Justice Ferguson admon- ished the City for failing to properly enforce its own bylaw and in awarding the Beers costs held the City responsible for a portion, totalling $10,000. Ward 1 Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner demanded answers from City staff this week at Council. “I know City Solicitor John Reble has done some review, but we need to go further to en- sure this never happens again,” he said. “(In the Beer-Hayes case) a citizen had to take action to en- force our bylaw...it’s unfair to put citizens in that position and this decision needs to be re- viewed.” The Rotary Club of Whitby Sunrise presents with special guests The Nylons Michelle Wright Friday March 1, - 7p.m. at the Oshawa Civic Auditorium. James Stewart Poland, 38, is accused of murdering Andrea Schneider in the garage of the couple’s Perfitt Crescent home on June 7. The body of the 38-year- old mother of three, execu- tive secretary for the Royal Ontario Museum’s board of directors, was found in the trunk of her car parked at the Durham Centre plaza at Harwood Avenue and Kingston Road. An autopsy found she died of blunt force trauma to the head, police said. Neighbours said Mr. Poland gave up work and stayed home to take care of the couple’s terminally ill seven-year-old daughter, who suffers from Batten dis- ease. The couple also have two sons, five and 11, now cared for by family. My weight loss was so easy...so effortless... I would like to share my marvelous secret with you...” Hi, I’m Linda Blackwood. I’m a customer service represen- tative. I’ve been married for 19 years and have two grown chil- dren. When I quit smoking at age 40, I packed on pounds so quick- ly, it made my head spin. I was overweight for 12 long years. I was embarrassed by my weight. I needed extra large clothing to fit around my bulging stomach and hips. Nothing was comfortable. Nothing looked nice. I didn’t want to go to parties or get dressed up. I didn’t want to do anything unless it was in a baggy sweatshirt and tights. Disastrous Dieting! I thought I could take off my weight by myself. I tried the grapefruit diet, the egg diet, and countless other fad diets. The more I dieted, the more I wanted to eat. The more I ate, the more I gained. It was a vicious cycle. Diets and cravings went hand in hand. Every time I’d start a new diet, I would begin craving candy bars. Eventually, I’d eat three or four! My extreme weight had me exhausted. I’d drag myself home from work and barely make it to the couch. I felt dragged out and achy. My blood pressure and cho- lesterol were sky high. I was con- stantly chewing on antacids. I worried about what would hap- pen when I got older. My Discovery I discovered Positive Changes Hypnosis in the news- paper. I read and re-read the ads, but put off calling for months. I was skeptical. The reported results were so amazing; I simply couldn’t believe it. Yet, I was desper- ate to break the vicious dieting cycle. I thought about all the Positive Changes success stories I’d read in the newspaper. I remembered that the ads had mentioned a free hypnosis screening. It also said there was a no-risk guarantee. What did I have to lose except about 50 lbs! I picked up the phone to schedule my screening appoint- ment. Instant Results! I noticed a change in my behavior the next morning. I did- n’t brew my usual pot of coffee. I reached for a big glass of water instead. I never drank water before! Since being hypnotized, I’ve been drinking at least ten glasses of water a day. It’s auto- matic! I melted off 6 lbs. my first week and 12 lbs. my first month. I stopped drinking diet soda, cof- fee and tea. My husband couldn’t believe it. These were major changes for me, but I wasn’t con- scious of putting any effort into it. Best of all, hypnosis eliminated those horrible cravings. I never feel deprived. I am satisfied with just the right amounts of food. I have control over what I eat. Compliments Galore! No one can believe the change in me. I was fat for so long, and my weight melted off so quickly, people just couldn’t believe it. Even people who bare- ly know me stop to comment on how great I look. They are always asking me how I did it. I am happy to recommend Positive Changes Hypnosis. In fact, I tell them that I think the Positive Changes Hypnosis’ program is worth more than dou- ble what I paid. I am so happy with my results. I love shopping now. I can even wear my daugh- ter’s clothing. I hadn’t bought a bathing suit in 20 years. I will buy one this year! Surprise Benefits To be honest, I am still puz- zled about how hypnosis works. I only know that my life has improved in amazing ways. I used to sleep 13 hours a day and still feel tired. That has all changed. I have abun- dant energy. I can accom- plish ten times more than before! I am so proud of my accomplish- ment. I am confident that my weight loss is for life. It’s easy to maintain my results because I never feel like I am missing out. I have no cravings and never get hungry between meals. Hypnosis transformed my poor eating habits into healthy, positive behaviors! Free Screening I have met a lot of other peo- ple at my Positive Changes Hypnosis center and they are get- ting great results, too! They tell me that they feel better and that their desire for junk food has van- ished. That’s why I recommend Positive Changes Hypnosis to people all the time. Hypnosis worked for me and can work for anybody. My only regret is that I wait- ed and suffered for months. If you are overweight, unhappy, or feeling dragged out the way I was, I can’t urge you enough to call Positive Changes Hypnosis — just go for it! Hypnosis really works. I’m living proof! Schedule your free screening and find out for yourself. Your health and happiness are too important. Being big doesn’t look good and it’s no fun to feel lousy all the time. I look and feel great - and I owe it all to Positive Changes Hypnosis. I now know how to be a naturally thin person - and that’s a benefit that will last me a lifetime! You can do it, too! So I’m making a list, I’m checking it twice; I’m going to find out who’s been naughty and nice. Regional Councillors in Durham gave themselves a gift. A big fat pay raise, a nine per cent lift. So there’s nothing for them, I hope there’s no rift, but they’re all typical politicians, if you’re catch- ing my drift. The budgets are coming from every municipality, big tax hikes have become a common reality. Somebody has to pay for us to live this way; and since council- lors think they’re worth more, in the next election we should show them the door. The federal government, they’ve got something of ours. $36 billion in E.I. deductions, think of all those working hours. So it’s their turn to give and not to receive, some economic stimu- lus in the budget might give them some reprieve. The prime minister seemed sin- ister when he did little for the U.S., raising funds for the party instead of helping friends in dis- tress. Too little too late when he went to ground zero, you missed your chance, now George Bush is our hero. We love the Americans, for them diamonds and fur, just wish they could remember who we were. The Tories in Ontario, now they’ve had some fun. Tax cuts and more tax cuts, it’s been a good run. Now Mike Harris is leaving and while most say goodbye, OCAP is laughing, hoping our businesses will die. So who’s the next leader? Is it Ernie or Jim? The chances of beat- ing Dalton in the next election look slim. So let’s give them a gift because they’re almost done; here’s a fail- ing ninth grader, Janet, you teach this one. All in all here in Durham it’s been a decent year, we got the OIT, giving us reason for cheer. Let’s hope next year brings us just as much fun, with all tiers of government paying retribution for what they’ve done. So a very merry X-mas, happy Chanukah and all that stuff, here’s hoping that property tax hikes aren’t all that rough. LETTERS POLICY All letters should be typed or neatly hand-written, 150 words. Editorial e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com Letters to the editor e-mail responses to shouston@durhamregion.com The government Grinches who stole Christmas How often in life can a fund-raising organization count on a $5-million donation some 30 years after the death of the bene- factor? Certainly, the notion is hard to fathom, but we can all be- lieve in miracles today. Colonel Sam McLaughlin (1871-1972) has given Durham Region a tremendous Christmas present in the form of a massive donation to the Durham Region Cancer Care Centre. That $5 million combines with $2.2 million raised the past few years in Cancer Care Lotteries to bring the fund-raising total to $7.2 million of the $18.1 million required. The centre’s $60.1 million total cost is covered 70 per cent by the Province with local contributions making up the remaining 30 per cent. The centre, located at the Lakeridge Health Os- hawa site, is expected to open in the fall of 2003. Colonel Sam, who set up the R. Samuel McLaughlin Foun- dation in the early 1950s, put a very strict, 50-year time limit on its life. His belief was the money should be dished out with- in a half-century because he said nobody would remember him in 50 years time. How wrong he was. A truly modest man, Mr. McLaughlin will be fondly re- membered for many, many decades yet. August holiday Mon- days in Oshawa are known as McLaughlin Day. In addition to being the founding president and chairman of General Motors of Canada, Mr. McLaughlin took part in every Oshawa General Hospital building campaign from the hospi- tal’s founding in 1910 right into the 1960s. He left the hospital significant amounts of land. Col. Sam also helped establish the Legion in Oshawa, do- nated land that would become Lakeview Park, established Camp Samac and was a significant figure in the development of the Boy Scouts, donated land and money for the McLaugh- lin Branch of the Oshawa Public Library and was a significant figure in assuring wartime vehicle and munitions production at GM. The R. Samuel McLaughlin Foundation has for decades been a significant contributor to many charitable causes throughout Canada. How appropriate that, as one of its last acts, the foundation is putting a huge amount of money toward a truly necessary and vital service for Durham. The Cancer Care Centre (probably to be named the R. McLaughlin Durham Region Cancer Care Centre in honour of the generous gift) will be able to serve up to 2,000 patients from Durham and points east. The foundation’s gift will help to spur on other donations and should make meeting the final goal a reality. Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus... in Durham Region we know him as Col. Sam. The competitive cyclist was up in the wee hours waiting for the washer to finish his son Ryan’s dirty school uniform, looking at maps from previous races, when the idea struck him. Mr. Verboom decided he was going to cycle to New York in a grand fund-raising effort for victims of the terrorist at- tacks on the United States. Equipped with walkie-talkies, two accompanying cars and an extra bike — just in case — the Ajax resident set off on his 11-day journey Oct. 8 from the Hudson’s Bay store at the Scarborough Town Centre, where he works in the loss and prevention department. After setting off, Mr. Verboom arrived at the Ajax and Pickering border where he was met by a num- ber of hometown supporters, in- cluding local firefighters, who went along for a short ride in a fire truck. Ajax Mayor Steve Parish was waiting on a bike for a ride through town. It was the first of many greet- ings from mayors, as the heads of communities seemed to be waiting in every municipality along the way to Gananoque. However, Mr. Verboom was amazed by the support from well- wishers. “I was really motivated by peo- ple along the way,” he said, re- counting stories of a transport truck driver who presented him with four large jugs of water and a beekeeper who bestowed upon him a trea- sured jar of honey. Mr. Verboom, who is also a pro- fessional photographer, said public motivation and his desire to see his journey through helped fuel his five to seven hours of cycling each day. “It was something I was really compelled to complete,” said the 38-year-old, noting a summer of competitive cycling meant he need- ed very little extra training in preparation for his journey. Mr. Verboom was especially ap- preciative of the numerous hand- shakes from customs officials and support from military personnel. However, even with so much gratitude from the public, Mr. Ver- boom remains modest about his journey. “Basically I was just the guy riding the bike,” he said, acknowl- edging the help and support he re- ceived from his wife, Maureen, and children Ryan, Benjamin and Erin. After arriving in New York, the Verbooms stayed for three days and despite some reservations, trekked down to the heart of de- struction. “I had no desire to see Ground Zero,” admitted Mr. Verboom, al- though his wife and children felt they must. Ultimately, he accompanied his family into the depths of the horrif- ic remnants of the World Trade Center. “I was holding in a lot of emo- tion, I had to go,” he said, adding, “I needed a closure, in a way.” Now that his exhausting journey has come to an end Mr. Verboom is “relieved”, but added, “I also miss it. It was such a trip, it was so amazing.” SUNDAY, DEC. 9 CHRISTMAS CANTATA:Bayfair Baptist Church, 817 Kingston Rd. in Pickering, presents its annual Christmas Cantata ‘I Have Seen the Light’ at 6 p.m. All are wel- come. Grade 9 math tests prove a challenge for students Durham school boards respond to standardized test results BY MIKE RUTA Staff Writer DURHAM ––The percentage of Durham students who achieved at or above the Ontario standard in the Grade 9 math test is below the provincial average, but higher than expected at the public school board, results show. The province’s arm’s-length test- ing agency, the Education Quality and Accountability Office, in Janu- ary and in the spring administered the first-ever provincial math test for Grade 9 students. The EQAO released the provin- cial and school board results Thurs- day, indicating the percentage of students who met or surpassed the provincial standard of Level 3, or 70 to 79 per cent. Province-wide, roughly 14 per cent of students in the applied stream and 49 per cent of academic stream students achieved at Level 3 or 4. At the Durham District School Board, 44 per cent of student in the academic stream achieved at Level 3 or better on the assessment, com- pared to 11 per cent of applied stream students. The provincial and board results were a pleasant surprise to Bev Freedman, the Durham District School Board’s programs superin- tendent. She recently predicted “very poor results” at the provincial level, given the tested students only had three years of the new and tougher elementary school math curriculum, introduced in 1997. “I’m very surprised at these provincial results, that’s much high- er than I anticipated,” she said in an interview. As for the local results, Ms. Freedman thought the board’s num- ber for academic students would be about 30 per cent, meeting the provincial standard. “We’re hearing back from par- ents and teachers that the kids are really struggling,” she said, explain- ing why she thought students would not fare as well as they did. Ms. Freedman said schools are sorting through their individual re- sults and generally there are some discrepancies that result in changes to some school percentages. Boards have until Jan. 31 to release school results to the community. As with other EQAO tests, Ms. Freedman said the board would de- velop strategies for improvement based on the results and bring a re- port to the board. At the Durham Catholic District School Board, five per cent of the applied-stream students met or sur- passed the standard, compared to 40 per cent in the academic stream. Paul Pulla, the board’s secondary school’s superintendent, agreed the students’ elementary school experi- ence was a consideration, though not the only one, in analysing the numbers. “These students who have writ- ten the first assessment in mathe- matics have not been awarded the benefit of experiencing the full, new math curriculum in elementary,” he said. Mr. Pulla said a full report on the board’s Grade 9 math test data would be presented at the Dec. 17th board meeting. The results show a sizeable per- centage of local students achieved at Level 2, which the province consid- ers a moderate level of achievement, below but approaching the provin- cial standard, considered a high level of achievement. At the Catholic board, 19 per cent of ap- plied students and 28 per cent of academic students achieved at Level 2. Meanwhile, 25 per cent of acade- mic stream and 24 per cent of ap- plied stream Grade 9 students at the Durham District School Board achieved at Level 2. Province-wide, one-quarter of applied students achieved at Level 2 compared to 26 per cent of academ- ic stream students. An EQAO press release advised that the new high school math cur- riculum, introduced in 1999, is “at an early stage of implementation” and that it “builds on the concepts and skills introduced in the elemen- tary grades.” BEV FREEDMAN ‘We’re hearing back from parents and teachers that the kids are really struggling.’ Billboard Dec. 9, 2001 N ame D ropping NEWS ADVERTISER DEC. 9, 2001 A/P PAGE 8 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, December 9 2001 50th Anniversary It’s been 50 years of wedded bliss for Vi and Cec Wheeler of Ajax. Depending on how a buyer is made aware of your home, price is often the first thing he or she sees and many homes are discarded by prospective buyers as not being in the appropriate price range before they’re even given a chance of a showing. Your asking price is often your home’s “first impression”, and if you want to realize the most money you can for your home, it’s imperative that you make a good first impression. This is not as easy as it sounds, and pricing strategy should not be taken lightly. Pricing too high can be as costly to a homeseller as pricing too low. Taking a look at what homes in your neighborhood have sold for is only a small part of the process, and on it’s own is not nearly enough to help you make the best decision. A recent study, which compiles 10 years of industry research, has resulted in a new special report entitled “Homesellers: How to Get the Price You Want (and Need)”. This report will help you understand pricing strategy from three different angles. When taken together, this information will help you price your home to not only sell, but sell for the price you want. Podiatrist- Foot Specialist Ask The Podiatrist: My feet perspire a great deal, and I find myself with itchy feet that always crack between the toes. My friends at the health club tell me I have an athlete’s foot problem. Do you think I do, and what can I do to stop or prevent it from recur- ring? Your friends are right. It does, indeed sound as if you do have ath- lete’s feet (TINEA PEDIS). First, I must tell you that you don’t need to be an athlete to devel- op this skin condition. It is caused by a fungus which flourishes in a warm, dark, moist environment. As feet may perspire more with athlet- ics, there may be a slightly higher incidence of athlete’s feet in people who participate in sports. Athlete’s feet can occur in the healthiest of people with the best feet. It is usually not contagious unless the proper conditions to ensure its growth exist. The area itself often has a red- dish line with flaking, whitish skin, which peels or sloughs off. This is nature’s way of trying to rid the body of the fungus. The most com- mon areas are between the toes. There are many ways to try and prevent the problem from occur- ring. The best is to avoid walking barefooted in areas such as health clubs, swimming pool decks and common shower areas. Always wear shower shoes. Secondly, you should keep the environment of the foot as dry as possible. Wear cotton or wool socks, not nylon, polyester or rayon. Natural fibres breathe, and there- fore, keep the foot drier. Also wear shoes that are made of leather or canvas. Shoes that are made to keep water out will keep perspira- tion in. Dry your feet well after every bath or shower, especially between the toes. Putting socks on a foot already wet from the shower will only hasten the occurrence of the athlete’s feet. Always put your socks on first when getting dressed, even before your underwear. This will prevent the spread of the fun- gus to the groin, which is also a warm, dark, moist environment. Treatment of an athlete’s foot problem involves: 1.Don’t scratch the area, as you will spread the infection. 2.Keep the area dry, cool and in the light as much as possible. 3.Wear socks and shoes made of natural materials. 4.Keep feet covered in pub- lic areas. 5.Over the counter creams and/ or powders may help milder infections, as well as soaking the feet in tepid saline salt water. 6.Prescription creams or orals may be prescribed for more chronic conditions. 7.If a secondary bacterial infection occurs (misery loves com- pany), that will also inflame the area - then a cortisone or an antibac- terial cream may be prescribed. Usually fungal infections are easily controlled, but they can recur if the conditions needed by the fun- gus are met. It seems that some people are more prone to those problems. Remember, you don’t need to be an athlete to develop ath- lete’s feet. Erin Cameron opened the scoring for the Lightning in the second period, ac- cepting a pass from Katie Wailes and making no mistake on the shot. Megan Hagg added an insurance marker mid- way through the third period. Solid goaltending by Danielle Cyr resulted in her second shutout of the tournament. The Lightning started the tournament with a convincing 7-2 victory over Lon- don. Stefanie Thomson led the way with a pair of goals, with Jennifer Grant, Brit- tney Sullivan, Shannon Baker, Hagg and Wailes all notching one apiece. Assist- ing were Shannon Stoneburgh, Colleen Broaderip, Wailes, Grant, Hagg, Cameron and Sullivan. Durham West proved too much for host Sarnia in the second game, as the Lightning cruised to a 19-0 victory. Ju- lianne Lindeblom scored her first goal of the season. Other goals came from Wailes with four, Michelle Sabourin, Sullivan and Grant each with three, Kelsie Moffatt and Hagg with two apiece, and a single goal to Broaderip. Robyn Crummey counted two assists. In the third game, Scarborough scored in the last minute to defeat the Durham West novices 3-2. Sullivan and Baker scored, with assists to Thomson, Sullivan and Baker. Mississauga scored early in the con- test, which turned out to be all it needed to post a 1-0 win over Durham West in game four. However, Durham’s large goals-for, goals-against ratio enabled the team to move on to the championship game.Local sports online www.durhamregion.com Ringette squad golden ...PAGE 17 722 Chalk Lake Road W., Uxbridge. 1km west of Lakeridge Resort (905) 649-5160 www.skyloft.com a Vacation Getaway Open to public Weekdays. Dear Friends, Thank you for participating in our extremely successful 2001 Durham Walk to D’Feet ALS. Your contribution is part of a national effort developed to raise awareness, fund local patient services and to support nationally directed research for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. On Saturday September 29th at Rotary Park Waterfront Trail in Ajax, over 400 family and friends came together to fight this dreaded disease. In a true team spirit we enjoyed music, exercise, refreshments, fresh air and glorious sunshine. There was laughter and there were tears. There was much joy and comfort in sharing our stories with each other - the difficult journey of living and dying with ALS. In Durham alone, you helped us raise in excess of $60,000.00 - tripling our expectation for the First Annual Walk to D’Feet ALS. Being one of eight walks taking place across Canada, your contribution is included in the national total of over $560,000.00 raised for ALS. Thank you so much. We could not have done it without each and every one of you! Please mark the date of SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 28th on your calendar. You are invited to come out and join the 2002 DURHAM WALK TO D’FEET ALS! In today’s busy world people pre- fer to take a shower. At Plumbing Mart they have the perfect alternative to the bathtub. It’s a shower con- version that utilizes the space of the tub and at the same time uti- lizing the existing plumbing. “As you can see in the photo, the shower conversion takes advantage of the entire space the tub took up,” says Sam Beninato of Plumbing Mart. “It creates a shower with much more space. In fact there’s plenty of room for two people.” The seamless wall panel means no tiles or grout so main- tenance is simple. You also don’t have to move the drain or fix- ture locations. The conversion features optional multi-function shower heads, shower spray and many varieties of sliding glass enclo- sures. There is even an optional seat which women will love for shaving their legs. “You can have it completely installed for under $4,000 and in as little as 3 days” says Sam. “And at the same time adding tremendous value to your home.” Plumbing Mart are leaders when it comes to bathroom ren- ovations. Over the last 40 years they also have established an excellent reputation and have since expanded their specialty to include kitchens. “We already have the best combination when it comes to products and people,” says Sam Beninato of Plumbing Mart. “We’ve done thousands of bath- rooms and kitchen projects.” Located at 1534 Midland Ave., the Plumbing Mart show- room is only 15 minutes from anywhere in Ajax and Pickering. It's a short drive west on Hwy 401, south on McCowan Rd. to Lawrence, go west two major intersections to Midland and then just one block north to Plumbing Mart on the west side. Ajax/Pickering The Community Newspaper since 1965SERVICES Mario’s wins basketball battle AJAX —A clash between top-rated Select Food Products and East Side Mario’s marked the opening game of Ajax Ladies Basketball League play here Wednesday. Select Food Products started the game strongly and barely missed a shot. East Side Mario’s battled back in the second half playing excellent defence and getting their fast break going. Mario’s got out in front and never relinquished their lead in a 45-40 win. Anne Whitehead netted 14 points for East Side Mario’s and Erinn Lynch scored 16 for Select. Missed free throws late in the game proved costly for Et Tu Caesar’s in a 41-38 loss to the Bank of Montreal in the second game of the night. With time running out Caesar’s made timely interceptions only to be fouled while shooting. However, Caesar’s couldn’t convert from the charity stripe. Lana Letourneau was the high scorer for the bankers with 21 points. Lori Fleming and Kev- ina Morrison netted eight apiece for Et Tu Caesar’s. Players in the league live in Ajax and Pickering. BETTER LEARNING 2001 Understanding A Report Card School report cards will be com- ing home soon often accompanied by proud smiles, but sometimes looks of sad disappointment. Here are some general teacher comments and insights into their pos- sible deeper meanings, along with suggested questions to ask your child’s teacher to explore these issues more fully. (A) TEACHER COMMENTS Your child is working to his greatest potential. THEIR MEANING. Your child is probably doing his very best at this level. WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW What is my child’s actual poten- tial? Is he/she working at it? How do you know? How do you measure it? (B)TEACHER COMMENTS Cathy is a delight in class! More attention to neat work could earn her higher marks. THEIR MEANING Cathy is not making sure her assignments are neat and organized. She does the work quickly just to get it done on time. WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW May I see examples of her assign- ments? Is she required to recopy messy assignments?
