He produced a police documentary for use in schools, 'Tackle Violence', wrote a 1997 book, 'Youth Violence: How to Protect Your Kids', and re- cently launched a Website where he answers questions from parents and students at their wit's end. "We get a lot of hits from kids that are doing school projects on youth vi- olence and kids that have been in- volved in school violence," said Mr. Guest. "We get messages from par- ents who .say, 'my son is being bul- lied, what should 1 do?"' His reply is to fight back. Not with fists, but by telling someone in au- thority, a parent, school staff member or even police. For most youths, however, that's a step they are reluctant to take. There's fear of retaliation, and of being branded a "rat," which young people think will make them a social outcast. There are others who think there's nothing that can be done. Mr. Guest's reply to those fears is that retaliation is not an issue. Once the leaderof a group of bul- lies is dealt with- by the school or po- lice, the other youths, who in his book be calls the followers,", be- come afraid of the consequences of their actions. In almost every case, they will not go after a kid who they think will re- port them, says Mr. Guest. "The one thing I hate to see vic- tims do is run away from the prob- lem," he said. "It : tightens (the bully's) stranglehold ` on the situa- tion." For youths who don't report what is happening to ;them, Mr. Guest says there are warning Signs a p "„ watch for.A persecuted youth - may feign sickness. to avoid school, exhib- it a lack of respect for the authority of Parents, May have bruises which are explained away ('t got it in gym'), or is missing property like a pile CD player (`I :tom it away')... "These types of things are huge warning signs," said Mr. Guest. Left deed, a violent ycnith will ascend What he calls. 'the vio- lence:ladder'.'Itbegins with intimida- tion and harassment and progresses to more serious acts. 'The one thing 1 hate to see victims do is run away from the problem.' -- KEVIN GUEST When a youth commits a violent crime, Me. Guess says it doesn't come out of the blue. "They all could be traced back to very low-level, nuisance behaviour that just spiralled out of control as. young people refused to: take good advice and instead listened to their friends," he said,. The mass murder of students at the now -infamous Columbine High School in Colorado was the top step in the violence ladder for the two killers, suggested Mr. Guest., "There were clear warning signs that these young people would - be doing these things," he -said. Mr. Guest says that leads to anoth- er big noth-er.big problem in fighting youth vio- lence: the denial of parents, school authorities and others — the "it - can't -happen -here" attitude. Reaffirming his cause, Mr. Guest's Web site, www.youthviolence.or.g/, cites Statistics Canada numbers which show -the number of Canadian youths aged 12 to 17 charged with vi- olent Criminal Code offences reached over 22,000 in 1998, a 93 -per -cent increase in 10 years. Kevin Guest, seen here with two-year-old son Cole, offers tips to parents on dealing with bullies and on vi- olence. A police sergeant with the Toronto Police Ser- vice, Mc Guest lives in Ajax. It's quite simple really. The Keele Valley landfill site in Maple, where most of Durham's garbage goes now, will no longer` be in operation after 2002. Therefore, the garbage has to go somewhere after that. A:private company, Notre Develop- ment, along with its partner Rail Cycle North, has proposed an arrangement whereby Toronto's garbage would be shipped north about 600 kilometres to the abandoned Adams Mine pit near Kirkland Lake; The massive $1 -billion deal would see 1.3 million tonnes of Toronto garbage going to Northern On- tario each year for at least 20 years. How does Durham fit in? Regional Chairman Roger `Anderson, who ad- mits he doesn't have the final numbers yet, sees the Adams Mine prospect as suitable for Durham. The Adams Mine garbage battle has a long history in North Timiskaming where the communities of Kirkland Lake, Larder Lake and Englehart, with a combined population of less than 20,000 are split on the _ notion of be- coming Toronto's garbage pit. Some feel the communities could use the dozens of full-time, long-term jobs the project would create. The area has seen hard times and a population drop with gold mines closing consistently over the past few decades. Others feel the trash site could be- come an environmental nightmare with pollution of groundwater (especially with Walkerton fresh in the news) in -evitable. A number of environmental assess- ments have been done on the Adams site and, with politicians satisfied itis a viable and safe prospect and willing to pay a hefty price for the privilege of bringing the garbage there, there's no reason for Durham not to take advan- tage. Certainly over the next two decades, advancesin recycling, waste reduction and pollution control will hopefully make the need for another Adams Mine unnecessary. But for now, time is running short and an answer for Durham's trash needs is required. Should the Adams solution be af- fordable for Durham - and trash will only increase in the next two decades as the region's population -and garbage production doubles -. we'll have to put the stuff somewhere: There is a solu- tion offered here and now and we should take it. Learning to east Learning to cast a rod and reel is re , latively easy, but should be pracw ticed in the back yard or at a park be- fore your trip. The principles are the, same whether you are using a spincast or a spinning reel. The trick is releasing your line at just the right point in your cast. With a spincast reel, the line is released by lifting your thumb off the reel button. With, a spinning reel, the line slips off the end of your finger. I Stand square to the area in which you want to cast and bring the rod tip right over your shoulder. When releasing the line your arm alc- tion is similar to throwing a dart. Imagine you are standing in front of a giant clock:, . Your arm motion begins by mov- ing the rod tip slightly behind your head to about the 2 o'clock position-, then smoothly but quickly, snapping -your, hand forward to the 11 o'clock pos ition where you release your line then follow through to about the 9 o'- clock, position. A little practice will have you casting a considerable distance in no time. I hand- ed them a irregularly shaped, yellow -coloured, gelatinous mass, then asked if they could identify it. None could. This exhibit representedan imita- tion pound of fat. And many patients said, 'Wow I didn't realize a pound of fat was so heavy." l admit that until holding this specimenthe concept of a pound also fooled me.. But since a single pound of fat felt so heavy each pa- tientalso thought, "Wow, think what it would be like to carry 10, 20 or 30 pounds of fat." I've never seen a better way to get the message across that obesity is the nation's No. 1 killer. And how a new medication, Xenical, can rid the body of 30 per cent of the fat consumed. The epidemic` of obesity has spun out of control. Fifty per cent of North Americans are obese, They are paying a huge price for these extra pounds. - Consider a woman be 'tween 25 and 30 years of age who is 100 pounds over her ideal weight. She is 12 times more likely to die than a woman of ideal weight. The health risks of obesity are as long as your arm. You're more likely to have' _sore backs, hernia, arthritis, kidney and gallstones and suffer from infertility. And snoring will keep your part- ner awake. Obesity also helps the big killers to kill more. Corpulent people have an increased risk of breast, uterus, large bowel, pancreatic and prostate can- cer, plus the increased risk of cardiovascular disease. A new drug Xenical, is a new approach to obesity. Un- like other anti -obesity med- ications it does not act on the.. The Doctor Game 0. Gifford -Jones MD. brain or nervous system. Rather, it goes to the source of the trouble, the digestive tract. Xenical, is what's called a "gastrointestinal' lipase in- hibitor." Pancreatic lipase .is the main enzyme in the diges- tive tract. Its purpose is to break down fat into tiny mol- ecules small enough to be ab- sorbed by the body. Xenical blocks the, action of lipase so effectively 30 per cent of dietary fat cannot be absorbed. One 120 -milligram cap- sule of Xenical is taken with breakfast, lunch and dinner or up to one hour following the meal And for those who like a drink before the evening meal Xenical does not inter- fere with alcohol. But don't forget moderation as there are calories in alcohol. Xenical has been exten- sively studied. More than 7,000 patients worldwide ' have been involved in clinical trials. How much weight can you lose taking Xenical? The majority of people lose from 5 to 10 per cent of their weight. But a recent report in the British Journal Lancet says 9.3 per cent of patients lost more than 20 per cent of body weight. And weight loss begins within two ` weeks of starting treatment. The 5 to 10 per cent -loss is scientifically significant. First, it is an achievable goal. Too many people shoot for unrealistic targets, become disenchanted and quit. Studies show this weight reduction is associated with a decreased risk of diabetes and lowers blood pressure in high-risk patients. This amount of weight loss also has an effect on blood fats. Xenical has demonstrated an ability to; lower blood choles- terol and also LDL (low den- sity lipoproteins), the bade cholesterol. It does not matter what kind of fat you eat. Xenical DURHA".'1 REGION doesn't play favourites and inhibits all types of fat. And remember it's fortunate Xeni- cal is a fat inhibitor Each gram of fat contains , nine calories. A gram of protein or carbohydrate only contains four calories. But taking Xenical does not mean you can gorge on fat. That was the common thread Sinding the hundreds of volun- teers who attended a pep "rally Wednesday at Oshawa's Civic Auditorium in preparation for the upcoming Ontario Summer. Games being staged throughout Durham -Region. Featuring youth groups danc- ing on the arena floor, speeches from politicians and members of the Games organizing commit- tee, and a magic show, the pep rally was used to thank the vol-, -unteers and pump the communi- ty up about the Aug. 10 to 13 Games. Kathy Ballantyne, a 34 -year- old employee of the Town of Ajax, was drawn in by the ex- citement generated in " Ajax, where the headquarters are based.
