Submitted by G. & A. Hilts, the plan proposes the construction of 16 town- houses, a bed and breakfast and an area for parking and boat storage on the east side of Liverpool Road south of Wharf Street. The property is part of the neigh- bourhood being studied by City staff and a team of consultants under the Liv- erpool Road South Area Detailed Re- view, the first phase of which was also approved by the committee Tuesday. But, Coun. Holland argued the com- mittee should have deferred a decision on the application until the development guidelines for the area have been for- mally approved by council. "The application currently does not meet the guidelines of this report;' he said. "It doesn't make sense to me, that before we officially adopt a report, we are going to give approval in principle (to a development application). "If we take off the veneer of what's been talked about, what we're voting on is 16 townhomes on a critical portion of Liverpool Road that we will not get back ... If we do it wrong we will regret it;' Coun. Holland added. "Clearly this is a mistake. I can only hope next week we stop and think about what we're doing" The Hilts application and the design study will go to council for considera- tion Monday along with another devel- opment proposal from the; Pickering Harbour Company (PHQ which wants to build 44 townhomes on the west side of Liverpool Road south of Wharf Street. The executive committee voted to refer a staff recommendation to ap- prove that application to the June 19 meeting. As for the Hilts application, Ward 2 Regional Councillor Doug Dickerson said he's "confident we have an applica- tion before; us that meets the (design study) ... To suggest we are rushing any- thing is hogwash" Coun. Dickerson noted the applica- tion still has to meet a number of condi- tions hefore; it can go ahe<xl. 114=1 NEMFS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, June 18, 2000 PAGE 5 P • -OMEN. P PAGE 6 NEWS ADVERTISER SUNDAY EDITION, June 18, 2000 0 Editori I N E W S AD V E R EDITORIAL Grading p Pickering residents well served Are you being served'' That's the question we hope we've answered in our annual report card on Pickering politicians which appears in today's 'dews Advertiser. It's an arduous task attempting to grade City and regional council mem- bers and the school board trustees who serve Pickering. We must strike a deli- cate balance between objective report- ing which readers expect from a news- paper and offering opinions we believe you need to shape your views about the people who were elected to serve you. The task is made more difficult by the fact our front-line reporters couldn't possibly contact even a fraction of the constituents for input. But, it's an important task, one we don't take lightly. We know precious few Pickering residents have time to at- tend man• meetings of City council. Re- gional council and Durham's public and separate school boards. That's why our reporters are dispatched to those meet- ings — to serve as your watchdog over the public servants and report back to you on their efforts and effectiveness. their actions and inaction. Compiling and publishing the report cards is an even more important initia- tive this year as the Nov. 13 municipal election nears. We urge against using these performance appraisals as the only means of making up your mind on who you'll vote for when you go to the polls. Keep reading the: News Advertiser to see what your politicians are up to. Try to get out to some council meetings. Give their campaign platforms close scrutiny. Our scrutiny of the men and women &OPINIONS T I S E R J U N E elected to run the City, the Region and the school boards leads us to conclude that overall Pickering taxpayers are being well served. We've decided against expanding on the school trustees here and will let the report cards speak for themselves. That's in large part because the Province has all but stripped school boards and trustees of the power they once held. Now in his fourth term as mayor, Wayne Arthurs continues to lead council effectively, if not with an iron fist. Our biggest disappointment with the mayor is his seeming flip-flop from pushing amalgamation with Ajax and then vot- ing against including a merger question on the civic election ballot. We hope it's not a sign of weakness, of throwing in the towel because the results of a refer- endum in the previous election failed to convince the Province to call for a full- scale environmental assessment of the local nuclear plant. Others who serve Pickering on Re- gional Council all rated a grade of B in our report cards. Maurice Brenner is an outspoken watchdog of the nuclear plant, Doug Dickerson shows a keen in- terest in the environment and Rick John- son doesn't let his colleagues ignore the needs of rural residents. Rookie Mark Holland is the best of the local councillors, but only slightly ahead of fellow freshman David Pickles and Dave Ryan, now in his second term. All three are good, solid politicians. But, those are just our opinions. We urge you to make up your own mind be- fore the November election. Then, cast an informed ballot. 1 8_,_2000 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Mike Harris not best thing since wheel invented To the editor: Once again- News Advertiser Queen's Park columnist Eric Dowd has hit the nail on the head with his article about Premier Mike Harris. Not that I can envision him doing such a thing, unfortunately, and I can't see him or his ministers tak- ing much notice of any public out- cry against their actions, either. The opposition cannot always be relied on, especially when they are too weak to control the excess- es of this government. Attendance: Attended 20 out of 20 execu- tive committee: mtxetings, 20/20 local council, 21/''1 regional council and 18/20 health and sex ia1 services committee meetings. Expenses: For Pickering, the mayors ex- penses are not calculated separately but arc considered part of the City's operating ex- penses. Estimated 1999 expenditures for the mayor's office, which include costs such as staff, equipment, seminars, a car for the mayor and public relations. were $136.299. Region - $89 4.28. Committees: Durham Region Health and Social Services Committee. Durham Region Governance Committee, Veridian Energy Corporation, Greater Toronto Services Board. Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance, ex -offi- cio member of most City committees. Current volunteer and community ac- tivities: Ajax and Pickering United Way, Ajax -Pickering Hospital Foundation. Most important issues facing the city: No tax increase locally or regionally in Pick- ering; construction of western library branch; opening of Puterhaugh Schoolhouse Museum; millennium waterfront project. News Advertiser's comments: Mayor Arthurs continues his low-key leadership style on council. The mayor's efforts this past year have included representing the city's case against an airport in talks with citizens' groups and provincial and federal representatives. He also continues to support the merger of Pick- ering and Ajax and led the call last fall for the Province to appoint a mediator to facilitate the amalgamation. And, although the mayor ar- gued against a resolution to request a full panel review of the Pickering Nuclear Gener- ating Station earlier this year, he believes the City should retain the right to ask the federal environment minister for a more stringent probe of the proposed restart of the Pickering 'A' plant, if that is deemed necessary, after the draft environmental assessment document has been reviewed by the City. -Ward 1 Isocal Councillor Bane Ryan Last year. B This year. B Serving second term. Attendance: Attended committee and 20/20 council meetings. Expenses: $112.65 Committees: Pickering Public Library Board, Pickering Site Plan Committee. Pick- ering Advisory Committee on Race Relations and Equity (chairman), council liaison to Pickering -Ajax Citizens Together (PACT) for the Environment. Waterfront Co-ordinating Committer- (co-chairman), Pickering Police Services Liaison Committee. Current volunteer and community ac- tivities: Supported fund-raising activities for the Pickering food bank. Pickering Civitan Club, Ajax -Pickering Big Brothers. Pickering Museum Village and Progressive Muslims of Ontario. Most important issues facing the city: The design and implementation of a new gov- ernance structure will be the most urgent and challenging issue in the year 2001. Others in- clude the demand for a full environmental as- sessment of the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station; opposition to York Region's plan to build a water pipe through Pickering; and the impact of provincial downloading on the mu- nicipal tax base. News Advertiser's comments: A strong supporter of the new library and community centre being built in west Pickering. Coun. Ryan has also worked with residents this past year, along with Coun. Maurice Brenner, to develop a local traffic safety program in the Rougemount neighbourhood. He continues to keep a watchful eye on the nuclear plant and supported a call for a full panel review of the Pickering nuclear plant earlier this year. He is also calling on the Atomic Energy Control Board to allow residents more time to review the draft environmental assessment document. On the governance front, Coun. Ryan is a firm believer in phasing out regional government here and creating two or three larger cities in Durham. • 171,..L . Isocal Counciibr Mack Holland mittee (co-chairman), Pickering Public Li- brary Board, Social Development Council of Ajax -Pickering board, Pickering Committee of Adjustment, Pickering Personnel Commit- tee, Pickering Audit Committee. Current volunteer and community ac- tivities: Amnesty International, Take Pride in Pickering program (founder). Most important issues facing the city: Governance is the most obvious and most im- mediate issue. Others include implementing and expanding council's storm water manage- ment plan; fighting for an end to child pover- ty in Durham; continued leadership and vision in the delivery of library services; protection of our rural communities. ensuring a full, fair and detailed environmental assessment of the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station; ex- panding recycling and composting services. integrating Greater Toronto Area transit ser- vices. Believes revitalizing the waterfront is one of council's greatest achievements this term. News Advertiser's comments: Coun. Holland remains committed to improving the city's waterfront and working with residents in the South Liverpool Road area to develop a plan to guide development in their neighbour- hood. Other initiatives this past year have in- cluded a resolution to make Pickering a city. He continues to highlight the importance of increasing funding for storm water manage- ment and restoring the Frenchman's Bay wa- tershed. Although unsuccessful, Coun. Hol- land also pushed for a referendum on munici- pal restructuring to be included on this year's civic election ballot and he maintains regional government should be phased out in Durham. News Advertiser's comments: Coun. Pickles brings a low-key, but effective ap- proach to council. He is perhaps one of the quietest members of council but continues to work hard on several issues, including the air- port lands in the north and the protection of environmentally -sensitive lands in the Rouge Park neighbourhood. He has taken the lead in encouraging municipalities across the province to take a stand against child pornog- raphy and is working with constituents to ad- dress the problem of vandalism in local parks. Current volunteer and community ac- tivities: Working with members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 606 along with Air Cadets, Army Cadets and West Rouge Canoe Club to find them a new home. Most important issues facing the city: Ensuring the health of the Oak Ridges Moraine; continuing to hold the Atomic Ener- gy Control Board and Ontario Power Genera- tion accountable to residents for a safe and healthy nuclear facility; making our water- front a fun destination place for all residents while ensuring a sustainable ecosystem for fu- ture generations; making our streets more 'pedestrian- and bicycle -friendly; addressing road needs to ensure vehicles can move effi- ciently, quickly and safely throughout the community. News Advertiser's comments: Coun. Dickerson continues to work with local resi- dents toward reducing vandalism in area parks and rowdy behaviour in ravines and green- belts. This past year he took the lead in head- ing the City's millennium committee, which planned New Year's Eve celebrations here and is responsible for the Pickering 2000 logos on local buses and banners throughout the city. fie also steered the Rouge Park Neighbour- hood Study and is working to negotiate the turnover of the balance of the government's hands in the study area to the conservation au- thority. ..Ward 3 Regional COlldlla Ride Johnson Last year: B This year: B Now in' his third term as regional council- lor, after one term as local representative. Current volunteer and community ac- tivities: Recently named first honourary Big Brother for the Ajax -Pickering Big Brothers, also involved with the Rouge Valley Health System, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Ajax -Pickering United Way, Providence Villa, Conservation Ontario, and a sponsor of local sports teams. Most important issues facing the city: Believes clean water is essential. Water effi- ciency programs and state -of -the art water treatment plants like the new Ajax water plant have been one of his highest priorities; ground water preservation and stronger controls on the use of surface water, finding new tech- nologies to create resources from garbage pro- grams like composting; planning future roads in the best way possible to improve the com- mute to work; need for more transit, cycling and pedestrian -friendly communities. News Advertiser's comments: Shows particular interest in waste management and road issues at both Pickering and Durham councils. Also knows his rural constituency well and continues to be involved in matters affecting the rural areas of Pickering, such as the impact of Hwy. 407 on the communities of Whitevale, Greenwood and Brougham. He staunchly defends the continuation of Durham's regional government, doesn't grandstand at meetings and generally tells it like it is. Durham Region Chairman Roger Anderson Last year: B This year: B Serving first term as Region Chairman. Was a local and regional councillor in Ajax between 1985 and 1997. Attendance: 2021 regional council meet- ings, 2/20 health and social services, 1121 works, 17/26 finance and 10/21 planning committee meetings. Committees: All regional committees — finance, works, health and social services and planning, the Central Lake Ontario Conserva- tion Authority, Durham Region Non -Profit Housing Corporation, Greater Toronto Ser- vices Board and GO Transit board. Current vohutteer and community ac- tivities: Member of the Ajax Kinsmen Club, the Children's Aid Society board, first vice- president of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario, Rouge Valley Hospital Foundation board, Junior Achievement board. Most important issues facing the region: Continued expansion of Hwy. 407; maintain control over our Official Plans; municipal re- structuring; sustainable source of funding for infrastructure and transportation; continue to show Province that the Region works effec- tively and efficiently in the interest of taxpay- ers. News Advertiser's comments: An out- spoken advocate for the need to improve Durham's infrastructure, he lobbied the feder- al government tirelessly this year in an at- tempt to bring Hwy. 407 to the region. He is also an ardent believer in the continuation of the region's two-tier system of governance and the need to develop a made -in -Durham solution regarding municipal restructuring. Has focused his energies recently on working with Durham's member municipalities in an attempt to reach a consensus on insurance pooling and the administration of the Provin- cial Offences Act. Durham District School Board * Attendance is from August 1999 through Muv 2000. There were nine standing com- mittee and 15 board meetings. * Conference expenses are from .September 1999 to Mav 2000. Paul Crawford Pickering trustee Last year: C - This year: C - Attendance: Attended 9/9 standing com- mittee and 13/15 board meetings. Expenses: None. Committees: In his third year as a trustee. Sits on the suspension appeals com- m i ttee. Volunteer and community activities: Director -at -large of Pickering East Shore Community Association; involved in com- munity activities related to Liverpool Road and waterfront development; umpire and referee in minor sports. Most important issues facing educa- tion: "I agree with most of the changes the (provincial) government has initiated and feel for the most pan this board has re- sponded very well mainly because present and past executive and staff have been effi- cient. I don't mind questioning either the government, or challenging our staff, when I think they can do better. I believe that the main purpose of a trustee is fo challenge. Representing the needs of our constituents is paramount and we could do that better by in- volving them more. I will be pressing for mandatory public input. I support returning extracurricular activities to our schools, as well as high standards and testing" News Advertiser's continents: Some- times drags out discussions, taking the board through labyrinthine procedural issues. But he was probably right about Ajax High School in that trustees never officially said culinary arts won't have a home there. Em- phasis on youth smoking was a waste of time; not at all a board priority. Ruth An Schedlich Pickering trustee Last year. A This year. A Attendance: Attended 9/9 standing com- mittee and 15/15 board meetings. Expenses: $534.05 Committees: A trustee for 11 years. Member of the Supervised Alternative Learning for Excused Pupils (SALEP) com- mittee. Volunteer and community activities: On board of directors of the Social Develop- ment Council of Ajax -Pickering and the On- tario Public School Boards' Association. Most important issues facing educa- tion: "Special -education funding shortfalls. We have always placed an emphasis on the delivery of special education. Again, this year, we had to make additional cuts to this program. We need to return to a full (ex- tracurricular activities) program at every secondary school. Need to address staff morale and work at improving employee re- lations, particularly with our secondary teachers. The funding formula needs to be adjusted for both school boards in Durham — 66 out of 72 boards is not acceptable. Our per -pupil expenditure needs to be increased by the Province" News Advertiser's comments: A solid trustee who often provides a "reality check" to her peers, particularly the newest trustees, on issues of which she has a good under- standing. Provides good representation for Pickering residents and Durham Region ratepayers in general. Durham Catholic District School Board * Attendance is from June 1999 through Mav 20WO: 24 meetings were held. * Committee membership is from December 1999 to November 2000. * Expenses. which include mileage, confer- ence and seminar costs, are from January 1999 through December /999: this year's weren't available. Volunteer and community activities: Eucharistic minister at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church for 19 years and on the Knights of Columbus at the church for six years. Twenty-year involvement in Views for the Visually Impaired. Most important issues facing educa- tion: In Pickering, priorities are to "estab- lish a new Catholic secondary school in Pickering to alleviate the severe overcrowd-. ing at St. Mary, therefore making it possible for students to attend school in Pickering if they wish; overcrowding in our schools and the increased reliance on portables as a per- manent solution; restoration of full extracur- ricular activities; inadequacies in special ed- ucation classification system and in curricu- lum changes in elementary and secondary panels; re-establish open dialogue with the community and listen to their concerns; im- pact of the 2003 combined graduation on students, colleges and workforce." News Advertiser's comments: One of the most active participants at board meet- ings. Consistently and vocally pressing for a new high school in Pickering. Criticized the board for dragging its feet on joint busing with the public board, and upset that a 2001 start date for the initiative, agreed upon by both boards, was not made known to trustees quickly enough. Maybe you are still together or maybe you are separated and it still hurts or, maybe it doesn't hurt but you are scared to make the same mistake with the next possible candidate that comes along. When each of us were children, we were affected in very specific ways, depending on our temperament, our parents' child rearing methods and the societal rules by which we were raised. Thus, for each of us there exists a par- ticular recipe for healing our own spe- cific needs. Learning to fulfill these needs enables us to feel whole and loved. Would you believe that the neces- sary ingredients for your healing, is possessed by your partner? Yes, this partner who ignores and frustrates you, who triggers your insecurities, shame and rage, is the key to your heal- ing. Not only that, but the very traits Chat hurt and infuriate you, are the most vital ingredients in your recipe for healing. Your partner was the choice of your unconscious, which scanned the candidates you encountered for a mate, that matched the image formed in your childhood "of the person who can make me whole". This image is com- posed of both the positive and negative 'traits of your parents/ caretakers, though the negative traits, which has the most profound effect of your wounding, tend to dominate. Even as an adult, your uncon- scious has an agenda. It guides you to heal your childhood, as it strives to get from your partner, what your parents didn't give you. Its' goal is to correct your early experience and to heal those old painful, stuck hurst, that keep pop- ping up in your adulthood relation- ships. Have you ever seen a 45 -year-old act like a two-year-old? This information may help to give you some clarity with your present sit- uation. However, it doesn't change the picture in which you are presently liv- ing. Especially if that picture is a painful and struggling one. Don't see yourself as being "stuck", you do have choices. One of these choices is that you could choose to remain in your present relationship. Learning from the sup- port of a professional, to accept your weaknesses and insecurities, as a foun- dation, in which to grow a more stronger sense of self confidence and self awareness. As you begin to accom- plish this goal, it will begin to change not only yourself but will also change your relationship with your partner. Another of these choices is that you could choose to leave or end the relationship with your present partner and learn to gain a stronger sense of self confidence, even after you are both separated. You may have already separated from your partner but still have a lot of anger and resentment to how you were treated in the relationship and how you both behaved. You may feel even less confident now, than before you even entered this past relationship. You cer- tainly don't want to be a poor shopper in your present state or you will just end up with another partner who will appear to hurt you like the rest. You need to heal those insecurities before moving on. Psychotherapy can help support you through either one of the above decisions. It will help you to view your problems and challenges in life, as an opportunity from which you can learn and grow. Within time, you can learn to welcome your problems, using skills to move through them, which enables you to become stronger, more indepen- dent, confident, enlightened, and resourceful. In turn, you will become a more peaceful and contented individ- ual- Psychotherapy enables ,you to explore your goals, dreams and pas- sions, while you learn to take the action necessary, to create the life, you truly desire. On June 21, with the North Pole pointed sunward, people in the Northern Hemisphere experience the longest day and shortest night of the 'ear. The Summer Solstice on June 21st has long been a cel- ebration of Light. Canadians particularly are lovers of the light, since we are deprived of it for so long during the winter. In a w•av, it's the return to Light that we celebrate when we rush to the garden centres in great crowds at the end of May. We are happy to be in the light, to feel the sun on our skin and to re -connect with the earth by working the soil and planting. The summer solstice is another such social pattern which connects us to the Earth - it's just a more ancient pat- tern. The solstice is not only about a return to sunlight (external) but is also about a return to the light of aware- ness (internal). The Summer Solstice celebrations at Greenwood Holistic health care centre are designed to ful- fill both functions. North American culture places high value upon speed. We're doing things quickly, that it is easy to lose touch with ourselves and live life on autopilot. Our Solstice program includes a look at how to access the inner you again. There will be a Tai Chi demonstration by Dr. John Ver•aeke, as well as a Yoga demonstration by Bille von Roeder and Fran Brunke. Additionally, the topic of "Self -Esteem: The Foundation of Success at Any Age" will be addresses by Kaitlin Ann. To help you re -connect with your body, the practi- tioners of Greenwood will be offering mini -treatments in massage, reflexology, shiatsu, and crystal therapy. During our planned herb walk, the many varieties of useful, medicinal plants that grow abundantly, but often unnoticed or despised, will be pointed out. Led by char- tered herbalist, Lisa parker, gardeners and non -gardener alike will be astonished to discover the natural bounty that Mother Earth produces right in our own back yards. They A regular pap test can save your life It is estimated that 610 women in ontario will develop cervical cancer in the year 2100, while some 170 women will die from the disease, according to Cancer Care Ontario statistics. These figures are high especially since cancer of the cervix can be pre- vented with one of the best pre -cancer warning systems available - the PAP test. Today, Cancer care Ontario launched a new initiative known as the Ontario Cervical Screening program "According to the cervical screen- ing guidelines, women should initially have a PAP test done once a year for three years and then, if normal, at least every two years until age 70," says Lynn Cuthbert, Public Health Nurse with Durham Region Heath Department. "As a general rule, women of all ages who are, or have ever been sexually active, should be screened with the PAP test. This process is a shared responsibility between health care providers and women through dis- cussions on the importance of the PAP test, including what happens if the results are not normal For rrx,)re information on this initia- tive in Durham region, call the Durham health Connection Line at (905) 723- 8521 or 1 800 841-2729, ext. 2158. elebrat1*0 can also investigate the herb garden, and perhaps sign up for one of the herbal lore courses offered at Greenwood this summer and fall. As the sun's light gets lower in the sky, the evening program begins with a Solstice ceremony, followed by a bonfire and shared storytelling, music, and song to cele- brate the summer's light and the light of conscious aware- ness. As the weather turns warmer, millions of Ontario residents start thinking about gardening. Outcome the weekend garden warriors to revive their neglected flowerbeds, lawns and vegetable gardens. In Canada, garden- ing is an estimated 3.5 billion dollar business. As you are struggling to pull out the thistles with r(x)ts that seem to go to China or hauling 25 -pound bags of topsoil to the birthplace of your famous roses, a neuromuscular skeletal injury is probably the last thing on your mind. Chiropractic Can Help Digging, lifting, shifting, and planting can cause significant strain to the muscles and back. Gardening requires motions you haven't used since raking the yard last fall. According to Dr. Stan Gorchynski, President of the Ontario Chiropractic Association (OCA) "Eight out of every ten Canadians can expect to suffer from back pain at some time during their lives." Spinal Tune-up "During the spring gardening season, however, we generally see an increase in the number of visits to chi- ropractors due to muscle strains, sore joints, and back pain. The warmer weather really inspires people to get out in the yard, but for many people a winter of inactivity makes them prone to back and muscle injuries," adds Gorchynski . Chiropractors recom- mend a Spinal Tune -Up to ensure that your body is in shape and ready for all of those warm weather activities. Injury prevention The following tips can reduce your chance of an injury while tending to your garden: 1. Warm-up your muscles before working in the garden. Limber up with stretching exercises, or take a short 10-15 minute walk around the block. 2. Avoid prolonged bending, pushing and pulling while raking and hoeing, which can strain shoulders or the lower back. Pause after three to five minutes and stretch. 3. Use long -handled tools to avoid forward and sideways bending that can aggravate the neck or lower back. 4. Switch hands frequently while raking or hoeing, to avoid strain and muscle spasm on one side of the body. S. When using a hedge trimmer, keep your back straight and arms close to the body. Use short strokes toavoid upper arm and neck strain. Pause after three to five minutes. Lift properly - Bend more with your knees and less at your waist. - Avoid lifting heavy objects above your waist. - Always face the object you are going to lift, with 'nose between toes'. - Make sure the load is balanced before you try to lift it. - As you lift, draw the heavy object close to your body. - Lift cautiously and slowly and avoid quick movements. - If you are moving many objects, stop frequently to change your position and/or grip. Remember that healthy posture coupled with smart body movement can help you avoid injury. To your chiropractor, wellness is a state of health where your body is free of interruption or interfer- ence to any part of your nervous sys- tem, enabling you full expression and enjoyment of life. Your chiropractor will check for spinal or other joint -relat- ed problems that may interfere with your nervous system and through hands-on healing will work with you to eliminate them. After chiropractic care your body will be better able to heal itself. This, in turn aids your body in maintaining optimum health and con- tributes to your overall wellness. But which specific shoe is best suited to our particular biome- chanics and foot function. With everyday activities, the average person walks approximately 1(X),000 kilometres in their lifetime, or about four times around the world. The foot must shock absorb on impact, adjust to contours in the ground or changes in surfacer firmness, and pro- pel you forward and back, up and down or sideways. The importance of a shoe type and proper fit cannot be over -emphasized for everyday activi- ties, but it certainly takes on greater importance with athletics. The simplicity of the sport of running, an activity that can be done anywhere, anytime, at any pace, by anybody, seems to be lost when look- ing at a wall of shoes with over 11) different models. We are all thankful for the quality, technology and choice that manufacturer's have put into their shoes but we need help in mak- ing a choice that will meet our needs. Almost all of us land slightly to the outside of the heel of our shoes, as evidenced by the wear pattern. The foot then rolls inward slightly as your body's weight is transferred to the forefoot and you begin to toe -off. As this happens, your arch will flatten and slightly elongate to better shock - absorb. This motion is called prona- WANT 1Z SOMETHING TO SMILE ABOU FRET?E Consultations • Complete & Partial Dentures UT • Removable Dentures on Implants Same day relines & repairs PS.T Evening & Saturday appts. While some degree of prona- tion is normal for most of us, those who over -pronate do so because they have weaker arches, are flat footed or have a greater degree of flexibility. The over -pronated foot will continue to roll inward as the arch collapses, leading to possible knee pain, shin splints or plantar fasciitis. Under-pronators(supinators) have high -arched rigid feet. These feet are poorer shock absorbers and these people spend a greater amount of time within the gait cycle walking on the outside of their feet. One way to determine which group you belong to, is to look at the wear pattern of your shoes_ But don't just look at the heel, as most of us will show a beveling of the heel to the out- side. Look at the forefront of the shoe. Overpronators will have greater wear along the big toe side of the shoe, while normal gait will leave the shoe wom out more in the middle of the forefoot. If your shoes have not worn out in any discernible way, another method to determine which group you belong to is to dampen the bot- Your Health Befoe Pre g na.1 fro nc Y on"Ft e a misfit... tom of one foot. Step on a piece of paper or cardboard and observe the imprint left as compared to the arch height of the non-weight bearing foot. Shoes can be categorized into three groups; cushion, stability and motion control. Which shoe type you need will depend on your gait, whether you pronate or supinate, and on symptoms. Generally in my office if you pronate or even slightly over -pronate, but do not experience any pain, a shoe of stability would be suggested. These offer some cushioning to shock absorb and some support for the arch. There are a wide variety of shoes in this category. Cher -pronators are best treated with a motion -controlling shoe. These offer a greater amount of support with a controlled heel counter and a straight last will try to direct the foot in a more neutral toe -off. A shoe with excessive cushioning is not advised. Under -pronators require a more cushioned shoe with a curved last. These shoes will help to shock absorb to compensate for the high arched rigid foot of a supinator. PLANNING FOR A HEALTHY BABY IN THE NEW MILLENNIUM What would the year 2000 be without changes? It's the time of new attitudes and new beginnings. If your plans for the future include getting pregnant, this is a great time to get your "health" in shape for the complex job ahead. A healthy body before pregnancy will provide your future child with everything it needs in those days and weeks before you even know you are pregnant. A good place to start is with your eating habits. If you begin eating healthy food now, when you become pregnant your baby will have all the nutrients it needs to grow healthy tissues and bones. Folic acid, one of the B vitamins is an important nutrient for 'mould -be" moms. Folic acid will help the baby's brain and spinal cord form properly from day one. You should be sure to get 0.6 mg daily starting at least one month before pregnancy and continuing through the first ten to twelve weeks of pregnancy. Its hard to get enough folic acid from food alone. You can get about one third of the amount you require daily by eating dark, green. leafy vegetables, com or cantaloupe. Your physician may suggest you take vitamins rich in folic acid but don't overdue it. Too much can cause health problems for some people. Another important step is to get off the couch and get active. Even a little regular exercise will strengthen your heart, body and bones and it means there's a better chance that your baby won't be under -weight at birth. Being under -weight or over- weight can have a serious impact on the health of the baby. If you're a smoker, hopnafully you will quit the habit but whedwer you do or don't, make your hone smoke free. A smoke free home means your baby will have fewer breathing problems and ear infections. It also reduces the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (crib death). Here's something to think about before you have a drink of alcohol. As a baby is developing, alcohol can cause birth defects by affecting the growth and formation of its' brain and body. Alcohol during pregnancy can also cause behavioural problems which show up during childhood and adolescence. Irs best to play it safe and avoid alcohol all together if you are thinking about becoming pregnant. Just knowing that you can make a difference in your future baby's health will encourage you to keep the promises you make in the new millennium. ..lune is "Health Before Pregnancy" month. For more information, contact the Durham Health Connection Line at (905) 723-8521 or 1-800-841-2729, extension 2158. Be sure to ask for a copy of the "Health Before Pregnancy' booklet. Lastly, if you have already seen a podiatrist and have been treated with a pair of ORTHOTICS to control over -pronation a shoe of stability may be adequate. The combination of a rigid orthotic and a motion controlling shoe may over correct your problem. Make sure your sales- person is knowledgeable, tell him your run- ning history and future running goals and even bring in an old pair of shoes. And most important is to spend an adequate amount of time in the store trying on several pairs of shoes until you know you have the best possible fit in oes the shoe best suited for your needs. However, (and there is always a how- ever) it has always boggled my mind how a singular increase in the States can equate to Two or Three increases in Canada. Remember a few years ago when the Banks net profit reached a Billion, people were outraged. Now it appears mast if not all will reach the 7'WO BILLION NET for a year. When is enough, enough. It is Morally repulsive that a company that earns over Two Billion has the audacity to reduce staff. If this was the U.S. this monopoly of power could not happen (just ask Bill Gates). What's Hot? Just about everything. The housing market is still a sellers' market, with prices continuing to rise. The job market is still active, and consumer confidence is reasonably strong. Why Central Funding Group? Fast Professional service, with your best interest being our primary concern. Prime first mortgages are always 3/4% below posted market rates. Just ask Durham's farmers, who are struggling to stay on schedule despite this spring's heavy rainfall. "It's a provincial problem. I was just reading the crop report in 'Ontario Farmer' this week- end:' says Durham Federation of Agriculture president Dave Barry. "One thing is we certain- ly haven't had to irrigate : Generally, crops need one inch of rain each week to sur- vive and grow, points out Mr. Barry. Some areas of Durham have been hit with as much as 14 inches of moisture in the last month, he says. And when the ground gets saturated, it becomes unwork- able. As a result, things slow down, down on the farm, he says. "It's had an effect big time. Soya beans should have been in by now and hay hasn't been able to be cut because it's too wet:' Mr. Barry says. "When hay isn't cut it starts to lose its protein:' The rains have put strawber- ries back about a week, says Mr. Barry, who operates two pick - your -own strawberry farms in Uxbridge. Most of Durham's operations have brought in On- tario berries fqr sale, but don't expect the pick -your -own vari- ety to be available until the fol- lowing week. Pumpkins, which should have been planted earlier this month, haven't hit the ground yet because the ground has just been too saturated, Mr. Barry says. Some growers are taking their seeds to the greenhouses to get them started instead. "We're masters of invention," Mr. Barry says of the farming industry. "We're optimistic. You still have to sleep at night. Somehow the work always gets done." Haven't you suffered enough? Just because you have allergies doesn't mean you have to suffer. The Aprilairedi High Efficiency Air Cleaner is up to 99% efficient at removing allergy -causing pollen, spores, and pet dander from the air in your home. So not only does it relieve your allergies, it also removes airborne dust and dirt, making your home cleaner. It requires no electricity (so it doesn't produce any ozone), and its high efficiency filtering media only needs to be changed once a year. On Father's Day 1 would like to remember my husband • Noel. A Pickering • Who was the most caring, kindness yet humblest man I ever knew. He taught us how kindness and caring came from the Father above. He has left behind one of life's great- est treasure that will linger in our minds as long as we live. Never in the history on planet earth, have I seen Love in action on a continuous basis until I lived with him. Perhaps, if we could see the splendour of the Land. To which our loved care called from you & me We'd understand. Perhaps, if we could know the reason why they went. We'd smile - and wipe away the tears that flow And wait content. » Love m Wife - Olive Sons - Andrew & Paul 1 In loving memory of 1, a dear husband, father and grandfather Ted Papatheodorou He had a nature you could not help loving And a heart that was purer than gold, And to those who knew him and love him His memory will never grow cold. The event began Satur- day, and will finish today, Sunday, June 18. Tctrathlon is a demand- ing competition with four parts: swimming, shooting air pistols, running and horse riding. Boys and girls compete in separate divisions in at five levels for each: junior 'A', junior 'B', senior 'A', senior 'B' and novice. The 'A' and 'B' splits are deter- mined by the competitors' levels of riding skills, as measured by the Canadian Pony Club testing system. The winners of regional competitions at the senior and junior 'A' levels have a chance of being chosen to represent the area at na- tional and international competitions. This year's national tetrathlon is in Nova Scotia July 16 to 21. LAoZ4*Y FLOOR MODEL CLEARANCE BLOWOUT! DRASTICALLY REDUCEUr IT AI.L MUST GO!!
