Approximately 100 local resi- dents and members of the recently formed Pickering Community Working Group met at Dunbarton High School Wednesday to prion- tize their concerns regarding York's proposal. And, orders of sus- pension, which took effect May 11, were issued in late April to all students who had still not supplied the health department with their immunization information. The health department reports that most students must provide proof of the following immunization: • diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, polio and meningitis (DPTP-Hib vac- cine) at 18 months and ages two, four and six; • measles, mumps and rubella (MMR vaccine) after a child's first birthday and again between the ages of four and six; • DPTP between four and six years old; • diphtheria and tetanus (TdP vaccine) between 14 and 16 years old. "Overall it has gone very well." says Dr. Donna Reynolds, Durham Region associate medical officer of health. "Most of the stu- dents who received notices actually had their vaccina- tions up to date; they had just not reported it to the health department, which is very good news" And, for others, the ini- tial notices served as a re- minder to parents, she says. ,•DUHII sus Fwmw AUTOMOTIVE DETaLwG FOR OVER A We Pay Up To m s30010Deductible " ifetime Warranty AUTO GLASS 3 CUSTOM UPHOLSTERY '• CAR ALARMS -REMOTE STARTERS on - SCOTC116UARD Professional WINDOW TINTIti Lifetime Warrants_ 1010 Brock Road South (Northwest comer at BaylyJ Wx83142 90 Call till .m. • MAX • COMPOUND - POl1SH • CUSTOM UPHOLSTW DURHAM REGION'S FIRST Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation _Sg SIB RUN FOR THE CURE C Sunday, October 1, 2000 iroc Wed., May 17, 2000 7 p.m. WHITBY FIRE HALL Taunton Rd. Was it my guardian angel who kept my foot off the gas pedal when the light turned green last week? Had I started immediately, I would have been killed or badly hurt by the car that raced across my path, completely ignoring the red light facing its driver. My daughter believes her guardian angel saved her from a fall down a flight of stairs one night. But where was my son's guardian angel when the accident that led to a fatal brain tu- mour happened? And where are the guardian angels of all the precious children around the world who are suf- fering in terrible ways? In a book I picked up at the library the other day there are many stories by people convinced a guardian angel in- tervened at a dangerous moment in their lives. I skimmed through them with a skeptical eye, wishing I too could be a believer. But the tragedies I hear about daily make that impossible for me. I definitely am not one of the 60 per cent of people, who, says a Gallup poll, believe wholeheartedly in r Grace Stevenson Opinion Shaper angels. The existence of angels is accepted by all three of the great Western reli- gions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The common belief is angels have three basic purposes: to worship God; to serve as God's messengers; and to act as caretakers of God's peo- ple. Many Roman Catholics believe everyone receives a guardian angel at birth. Ancient Jewish records also teach the personal angel theory. In fact, the Talmud speaks of 11,000 guardian an- gels being assigned to each baby born into the Jewish faith. Muslims believe recording angels are present at prayer in the mosque and witness for and against people on the Day of Judge- ment. Most Protestants pray to God but often ask angels to intervene when necessary. I'm willing to admit there are human beings with qualities usually attributed to guardian angels. I'm for- tunate to have friends in my life who fit into that category. But they don't fit the dictionary description of an angel, which is "a spiritual being endowed with immortality:' In one of the opening chapters of the book, 'Where Angels Walk,' the author says, "to those who are willing to believe, no explanation of the events on the following pages is necessary. But I all ready knew; they call it mother's instinct. I removed him from that situation and quickly found anoth- er wonderful provider for him. I never once regretted being a working mother. I have been on day trips, I participate in their school activities and functions. I have never missed an open house or a chance to meet their teachers. My kids never missed out on ifter-school activities. I have been a hockey, soccer, swimming and lacrosse mom. I remember when my children started to crawl and, walk because I was there. I take pride in both my boys. They have matured into respectful, courteous, well-mannered, honest young men. I have many positive comments about them. They both know their father and I are here whenever and wherever they need us; it doesn't matter what time of day or night it is. They know we will be there for them, just like we have always been. I don't know that I could have done a better job raising them, even if I was a stay -at -horse mom. Please, stay-at-home moms, leave us working mothers alone. I don't criticize you for your choice. "Every parent knows what a dif- ference a good teacher makes in their child's education:' said Educa- tion Minister Janet Ecker. "Ontario has many excellent teachers doing many great things. But teacher train- ing and upgrading is not as consis- tent, effective and rigorous as it needs to be. This program will pro- vide parents, students and taxpayers with the assurance that all teachers are up to date and doing the best job possible*- The teacher testing program, which the Province pledged to intro- duce during last year's election campaign, will include the follow- ing components: • all new teachers will be required to write and pass a qualifying test, sim- ilar to a bar exam for lawyers, to be initially certified by the Ontario College of Teachers: • current teachers will have to par- ticipate in mandatory professional development courses in order to be re -certified every five years. Asking questions will help you better understand the information being presented. Quite often, teachers present information meaning one thing, and the student interpreted it in an entirely different way. In order to he sure that you interpret the information the way it is intended, you must ask clarifying questions. As the teacher is speaking, you can make point form notes to help you remember the information later. Asking clarifying questions will ensure that the information you are writing down is correct. " I am pleased Janet Ecker has listened to teachers:' he adds. Mr. Butcher reports he doesn't have a problem with the Province's desire to ensure teachers take part in Tomorrow begins today. ongoing professional development. Make sure that your work is properly dated, and start each day at the top of a new page. It is very important to review your notes as soon as possible after class. This will allow you to fill in any blanks in your notes while the information is still fresh in your mind. You should also compare your notes with friends to make sure that you did not miss anything important. If you should miss a day of school, be sure to get any notes covered on that day. Once you have copied these notes, review the information with a friend to make sure you fully understand what you have copied. It is also a good idea to borrow notes from more than one person when you miss a day. A recent study published by the Toronto Board of Education (January, 1996) found that children who attended a summer program not only improved their literacy and numeracy skills, but also developed a positive outlook on school. Children who begin school confidently in September are more likely to maintain their self-esteem throughout the year. Based on the teacher's suggestions, find a program that reviews basic concepts and provides extra practice. Individualized programs are ideal because they provide the flexibility for your child to progress at his/her pace, focusing on the areas which require attention. The 24th Annual Educa- tors' Breakfast, presented by the Durham branch of the Elementary Teachers' Federation Of Ontario (ETFO), was held at Exeter High School in Ajax. Teachers. students, parents, and staff• and trustees from the Durham District School Board attended the event, which featured Education Minister Janet Ecker as guest speaker. Those who attended were treated to a perfor- mance by the Sunderland Public School Choir, The Northern Notes. The highlight of the morning saw Jane Crosbic, a teacher at Dr. Robert Thornton Public School, and Claremont Public School student Lindsay McCabe recognized for the positive impact they have had on their schools. Miss McCabe, who maintains an A average, is the student representative on her school community council and a leader always ready to help her peers, said ETFO Durham execu- tive member Debbie Sobun. "Lindsay is someone who cares deeply about her school community;' said Ms. Sobun. Miss McCabe described the great opportunity she had to attend the board's Students Together Against Racism camp, and paid tribute to the staff at her school in north Pickering. "Thev're not just there to teach; they're there as friends;" she said. "Much of our success is because we're surrounded by peo- ple who care" And while the media often focuses on the nega- tive things which happen in schools. Miss McCabe said students make a big contri- bution to their communities through their volunteer and other efforts. "The vast majority of kids out there arc good;" she -said. "Unfortunately, it's the troubled teens you read about " Ms. Crosbie said every- one needs mentors, and thanked the influences on her life who "taught me, pushed me, encouraged me and led me down paths I would have never travelled without them." Teachers• she said, "are the very best at being friends with one another;' and Ms. Crosbie thanked her fellow staff members for motivating her. "They have always been there to cheer my success- es;" she said. "They've put up with me and my fast - paced speech, which changes course several times in the course of a conversation." Ms. Ecker said the teachers she remembers most are her elementary school instructors. The Pickcring-Ajax -Uxbridge MPP fondly recalled spending many hours read- ing with her parents, other family members and educa- tors. It is everyone's job to ensure that kids grow up with a love of education, said Ms. Ecker. She praised the two hon- ourees. That question should malfk all of us stand up and take notice. After all, who has- n't suffered from heartburn at one time or another? All you have to do is look at the ads on TV to realize that the treatment of this condition has made many companies rich. Last year, a report in the prestigious New England Jour- nal of Medicine labelled heart- burn a serious symptom. It claimed that since 1970 the number of cases of adenocarci- noma of the esophagus had outpaced all other malignan- cies. In fact, in the 1990s this malignancy has become the eighth most common cancer worldwide. What is causing the in- crease in esophageal cancer? F( several years doctors have treated a condition called 'Bar- rett's Esophagus'. It's believed to be the result of gastroe- sophageal reflux disease (GERD). Following a meal, the tight ring of muscle separating the stomach from the esophagus usually remains closed. Heartburn occurs when the muscle doesn't remain tight or opens at the wrong time. This allows irritating stomach juices to splash up into the The Doctor Game W. Gifford -Jones M.D. lower end of the esophagus. Normally this only causes irritation of the lining of the esophagus and a glowing fire beneath the breastbone. It's often accompanied by belch- ing and regurgitation of bitter fluid. But splashing stomach acid into the esophagus over a long period triggers Barrett's dis- ease and, less often, cancer. But how great is the risk of esophageal cancer if you're troubled by occasional heart- burn? Researchers in Sweden studied 189 patients who had esophageal adenocarcinoma and 987 who did not have this malignancy. They concluded that the risk of this cancer was eight times greater than normal for people who suffered from heartburn at least once a week. It was 11 times greater for those with attacks during the night. And 44 times greater for pa- tients who had suffered from heartburn for at least 20 years. The New England Journal of Medicine sums up the prob- lem in a nutshell. "Heartburn;' they say, "must be given re- spect" In effect, don't take this condition lightly. I'd suggest it's also time North Americans gave more respect to their bodies. GERD and it's complications are sim- ply another lifestyle disease. Or, more specifically, an obesi- ty problem. Consider the types and vol- ume of food that North Ameri- cans devour. Remember the TV ad in which the man boasts, "1 can't believe 1 ate the whole thing!- An over- loaded, bloated stomach puts increased pressure on esophageal muscles and some- thing has to give. If that's what you've done, loosen your belt after a meal. It also helps to avoid tight -fitting clothes and remain upright after eating. Forget about after-dinner naps. Your doctor may advise raising the head of the bed as some attacks occur during the night. Many cases of GERD can be prevented by eating smaller meals. Imitate Europeans. Learn to enjoy leisurely meals. Stay away from onions, garlic, chocolate and tobacco which relax the esophageal muscle. And say no to gas producing carbonated drinks. But suppose you've limited your desires and heartburn continues. You must turn to medication before con- stant acid irritation triggers danger- ous changes in the esophagus. But a word of caution. It's ironic that the increase in esophageal cancer has occurred at a time when we've never had so many drugs to treat heartburn! So don't make the error of taking medication and neglecting to change a faulty lifestyle. The best way to treat occasional heartburn is by over-the-counter antacids such as Tums, Rolaids, My- lanta and Maalox. These medications can relieve an attack that's already started. H2 blockers such as Pepcid AC, Tagamet HB and Zantac 75 ease the esophageal fire by blocking the ac- tion of histamines needed for the pro- duction of stomach acid. They take about 30 to 60 minutes to work so can be effective if taken before a meal and can prevent heart- burn for several hours. Proton -pump inhibitors (PPIs) are the most recent drugs. These medications such as Pre- vacid, Prilosec and AcipHex work in a different way. They prevent attacks by shutting down the cells that pump acid into the stomach. But you can't pop these pills to head off an attack. PPIs take several days to reduce blood levels of acid so must be used on a regular basis. Taking heartburn seriously means accepting that it's a chronic disease and requires continuing therapy. Con- sult your doctor if you suffer from chronic heartburn. He may suggest endoscopy if he believes there's a risk of either Barrett's disease or malig- nancy. This involves inserting a small lighted tube down the esophagus. If there's a suspicious area a biopsy can be done. And don't forget those lifestyle changes. Alt 4.0014%u if w 0 ,ate/ Get Active, Yb"r Way .... While there's no way of pre- dicting how many smog alerts will be issued this summer, En- vironment Min- istry spokesman John Steele says the ministry has come up with a new way to let people know when there's a possibility of a had air day. A new air- quality Web site, located at www.airquality- ontario.com and launched May 1, gives "predic- tions by the min- istry that there's a 50 per cent possibility of a poor air quality day over the next 72 hours," says Mr. Steele. Having ad- vanced warning about weather conditions which could lead to a smoggy day will "allow individu- als or municipal- ities to cut down on activities" such as grass - cutting, paving and driving short distances to help alleviate smog problems, says the ministry spokesman, adding individu- als will also ben- efit from the sys- tem. "For someone who is sensitive and affected by air quality, they can take appro- priate action," re- lates Mr. Steele. Durham Re- gion's environ- mental health manager, Alex Connor, says smog can affect ..anybody with an underlying health condi- tion," such as chronic lung dis- ease, asthma, emphysema, and People who are very sensitive to allergens, as well as the very young and the very old. During a poor air quality day, Mr. Connor rec- omrrknds• :t.ls • plc stay indoors and if you have air conditioning, by all means, use it" As well, he says people should keep out- door activity to a minimum, until breathing is a lit- tle easier. "People who exercise heavily during those times are really asking for trou- ble," he notes. The possibili- ty of smog is pre- dicted "based on the weather and the flow of air from the U.S.," says Mr. Steele. "Fifty to 60 per cent of ground level ozone (smog) comes in from the U.S." Air quality is monitored from 33 stations in Ontario, says the environment ministry's spokesman. So far this year, there has been one smog watch, issued last Thursday, "but it did not material- ize." Last summer, there were nine smog alerts is- sued. The year be- fore, eight were issued, and in 1997, six alerts were put out, points out Mr. Steele. There's no way of knowing what this year will he like. smog -wise. Alter finishing in the middle of the pack in their division last season in the Ontario Youth Soccer League (OYSL.) — the highest level of amateur soccer in the province — the Ajacians are focused on making a run for the top against nine other elite teams, reports squad manager Richard Ray. The Warriors will take the field against the Wex- ford Warriors, Vaughan Rockets, Dixie, Kitchener, Burlington, York Jets, Woodbridge, Oakville and Olympic Flame this section. Ray figures Wexford and Vaughan will be the teams to beat. Wexford is coming off a national championship in 1999 while Vaughan was runner- up at a prestigious international tournament in Florida last year. A retooled line-up features nine new faces, in- cluding strength at the goalkeeper and midfield per sitions. And, the Warriors have a new coach at the helm in Tony Cabral. So team members are confi- dent a winning season is in the offing. "We're very optimistic that we can clove up this year," notes Ray. "We've done some rebuilding and we've got a new coach. One of the things about this year's team is that we're going to have a good all-around team. We think the team is going to be as competitive as Wexford:' K DURHAM REGION'S Ray points to the strength the team will enjoy in net. Goalkeepers Steven Cox and Aaron Chinn both have experience at the provincial under -17 level, which will make the Warrior tough to beat this sea- son. "In terms of goalkeeping, we have two solid goalkeepers which is an unusual situation for any team to have," he says. "And, they have co -existed very well" Ray is also certain the midfield should be strong. Amde Evans will he counted on for midfield lead- ership when the team opens its OYSL schedule next week. The Warriors will play their only pre -season contests at a tournament in Sarnia May 13 and 14. That event will allow the coaching staff to further assess the team. The OYSL season officially gets under way for the Warriors Wednesday, May 17 when they meet Woodbridge at the Rainbow Creek soccer pitch in Woodbridge at 9 p.m. The home opener for the Warriors under -1 ti squad is at the Monarch pitch at the Ajax Commu- nity Centre Wednesday, May 31 when they host the York Jets. Game time is 9 p.m. SECOND ANNUAL SHOOT ACP 7r WHISPERING RIDGE MONDAY, MAY 15th at 6:30 p.m. Whispering Ridge opened in 1996 and was designed to accom- modate novice and advanced players alike. Bent gram tees and sculp- tured fairways combined with a picturesque view and virgin rough am the notable qualities that generate the increasing popularity of Whispering Ridge's brisk 18 -hole challenge. This course offers a bal- anced mixture of short and long holes measuring in at a total of 4773 yards. Whispering Ridge is also the perfect choice for small groups of 20 to the corporate golf tournament of 200. The club features a two-level clubhouse, pro ' shop, large dining room, golf lounge, patio and com- plete locker and shower facilities.
