Punish cheaters,
not their children
Province can't control welfare fraud
with an iron fist
April Fool's Day was no joke for the
people who rob us of our hard-earned
tax dollars.
April I is the day the provincial gov-
ernment's latest get -tough policy on
welfare cheaters went into effect. As of
last Saturday. Ontario residents who de-
fraud the social assistance system and
collect money they don't deserve face
being cut off welfare for life.
An overwhelming majority of people
support punishing individuals who
cheat the system of money designed to
help those who truly require social as-
sistance just to eke out a living.
In doing so, that overwhelming ma-
jority concurs with Ontario Community
and Social Services Minister John
Baird. "Welfare fraud of any kind, com-
mitted by anyone, is simply unaccept-
able," says the man who replaced Pick-
ering -Ajax -Uxbridge MPP Janet Ecker
in that portfolio. "Our welfare fraud
measures are designed to ensure that
your hard-earned tax dollars get to the
needy, not the greedy. We can't allow
people to rip off a system designed to
help those truly in next."
We couldn't agree more.
But. we caution Mr. Baird and his
Progressive Conservative government
on just how tough the get -tough policy
should be.
Yes, people who cheat the welfare
system are criminals. And, their crimes
aren't victimless. Everybody who de-
frauds the social assistance safety net
robs hard-working taxpayers. So. wel-
fare cheats should be punished.
Their children should not be. But, the
innocent offspring of social -assistance
rip-off artists could well end up paying
the price for their parents' crimes if the
Tories stick hard and fast to their zero -
tolerance policy.
By permanently disqualifying con-
victed welfare cheats from future social
assistance, the government could well
make the plight of impoverished chil-
dren even worse. Without any money
being provided to their parents, the
youngsters might not have a roof over
their heads or food on the table. Who
can say what the future might hold for
these children if they aren't even getting
the basic necessities in a province rich in
social resources and tax revenues?
Nobody wants to see a child left hun-
gry — or homeless — just as nobody
wants the welfare system cheated.
The Province must he mindful of that
when it enforces its get -tough policy.
The: Conservatives have to treat inci-
dents of welfare fraud on a case-by-case
basis, and provide checks and balances
to ensure the guilty parties are punished
in a manner that doesn't also target in-
nocent family members.
Go after the cheats, but not their chil-
dren.

Pay teachers to run extracurriculars; board urged
Durham high school community councils lobby public board
BY MIKE RUTA
Stuff' Writer
Durham's public high school com-
munity councils have called on the
board to pay teachers more for run-
ning extra -curricular activities.
In a presentation to the Durham
District School Board standing com-
mittee Monday, Faye McFarlane, a
member of the R.S. McLaughlin Col-
legiate and Vocational Institute school
council in Oshawa, said advisory bod-
ies across the region want the the
board to settle the extracurriculars
issue when it negotiates contracts with
teachers this year.
She suggested the board publicly
recognize teachers who take part in
activities and said discussions need to
begin on paying educators to get them
involved again.
Ms. McFarlane said over the past
two years the atmosphere in high
schools has degraded to the point
where teachers, students, parents and
administrators are in conflict with one
another.
"We are seeing the polarization of
parties that we have never seen be-
fore;" she said.
While concerned citizens have
come forward seeking to run extracur-
riculars once supervised by teachers,
"that's not the answer" to the problem
and parents want to work with the
board to develop a lasting solution,
said Ms. McFarlane.
"We do share with you your con-
cerns about extracurricular activities,"
said board standing committee chair-
man Bobbie Drew. "We do realize
how important this is for the school
experience of students"
Ms. McFarlane said in an interview
legislating teachers to take part in
school sports and other activities, as
the Province has proposed, will only
make the problem worse.
Craig Burch, board superintendent
of employee relations, agrees legisla-
tion is no solution.
He said it's time for the Province to
take a good look at the American
model, in which teachers are paid to
take part in most extracurricular activ-
ities. But that would be a
provincewide solution, said Mr.
Burch, and not something which
would solve the problem this year.
A negotiated contract with teachers
will go a long way to sorting out the
issue, he said.
"I'm hopeful, but I'm reluctant to
make too many promises about it. I've
always felt this was an unlawful work
to rule we're seeing and that there are
more teachers withdrawing from ex-
tracurricular activities than their cur-
rent workload requires"
Shelley Page, District 13 president
of the Ontario Secondary School
Teachers' Federation, said that claim

was dismissed when the board
last year brought Ontario Labour
Relations Act charges against
union members, arguing they
were conducting an illegal strike.
"I regret he's still using that
language" she said. "It's certain-
ly not helpful."
Paying teachers for extracur-
riculars "wouldn't solve the prob-
lem that brought us here in the
first place," though some teachers
might welcome that as a solution,
said Ms. Page.
She worries it would be a
"nightmare," for example, trying
to sort out a fee structure for var-
ious voluntary activities. And
compensation would not reflect
that teachers take part because
they value the activity itself and
the kids who are involved.
It will take a negotiated settle-
ment and an indication "that this
board cares about secondary
schools again" to convince teach-
ers to resume participation in ex-
tracurriculars, said Ms. Page.
And. she contended, teachers
are simply unable to provide ac-
tivities because their workload
does not allow them enough time.
Anne MacDermid, an SCC
member at Brock High School,
said many teachers arc upset
about the lack of extracurricular
activities. And, parents are angry
that "the board does not seem to
want to get on the train" to solve
the problem.
"I think a lot of parents are so
frustrated;" she said. "They talk
and talk and nothing happens"
Ms. McFarlane asked the
board for an immediate response
on what officials will do to bring
back teacher -led extracurriculars.
"If we don't get something
bloody concrete, we have to go
beyond, we have to go to the
Province," she said.

Durham residents who nabbed criminals, saved lives win police awards
BY SUSAN O'NEILL
Staff Writer
It's not exactly an Oscar, but a
Newcastle man who received a
Durham Regional Police Civilian
Award Wednesday says he now
knows what it's like to be a Hol-
lywood star.
Louis Lalande. who clobbered
a gun -wielding bandit over the
head with a chair during a rob -
h ry at the Bank of Montreal in
Oshawa's East Mall last Decem-
ber, was one of 17 Durham resi-
dents honoured by police for
demonstrating bravery.
The Civilian Awards were
handed out in the council cham-
be=rs at Durham Region headquar-
ters.
"It's not the most pleasant way
of stopping a bank robber." ad-
mitted the 64 -year-old man.
Mr. Lalande was selling raffle
tickets in the mall for the Knights
of Columbus when he noticed the
robbery in progress. "I was care-
ful, I knew where the gun was
pointed."
He was honoured along with
Shawn Larocque of Pickering,
Lorenzo Guarini of Oshawa and
Kevin Spurrell of Oshawa, who
helped hold the suspect until po-
lice arrived.
Mr. Lalande said he's glad he
intervened in the incident, but
hopes the attention he's received
will taper off.
*1 like the glory. but enough is
enough. After a while, it starts to
weigh on you... You have to get
back down to earth." He said
people recognize him all the
time. "You get a little hint what it
is like to be a Hollywood star."
"It's a wonderful honour, it
certainly makes you feel it's def-
initely worthwhile when you help
the police out like that.
"It's a great honour." said
Robyn Hillis of Ajax. who was
presented an award along with
her co-worker Marilyn Burke of
Oshawa.
The pair witnessed a robbery
at the Subway Sandwich shop at
Hwy. 2 and Harwood Avenue in
Ajax while working at the nearby
Arby's last summer.
They immediately called po-
lice with a description of the sus-
pects and the licence plate of the
vehicle involved.
That information led to the ar-
rest of two suspects and 16 crim-
inal charges were laid against the
accused.
"A lot of people say they
wouldn't want to get involved (in
stopping a crime) because you
don't know what could happen."
she said. "But this makes it all
worthwhile."
Andrew Murphy, who spotted
a house fire while being taken to
the hospital by his neighbour
Cathy Morrison following his fa-
ther's fatal heart attack May II,
was also " proad" to be honoured
by police.
.I'm sure he's happy for the
award and I'm sure his father
would have been happy." said the
13 -year-old Newcastle boy's
mother Ethlyn Murphy. The
award is "bittersweet. I'm glad
for Andrew's sake that they rec-
ognized him."
Mrs. Morrison and her hus-
band Ted, an off-duty firefighter
who went to the burning home to
awaken the residents, were also
presented awards.
Other award recipients includ-
ed:
- Kevin Saindon and Brad Hors-
ley of Ajax and David Dalton of
Port Perry, who last July appm-
hended a man who was attempt-
ing to car -jack a vehicle belong-
ing to a 55 -year-old woman;
Michael Kane of Oshawa, who
contacted the Oshawa police sta-
tion July 13 to alert officers about
an elderly woman on oxygen who
was in distress,
- Scott Graham of Oshawa, Do-
minic Sirizzotti of Courtice and
Steve Givelas Jr. of Courtice,
who attempted to rescue an un-
conscious man trapped inside a
burning car that had struck a tree;
William Harford of Bow-
manville, who saved an elderly
Alzheimer's patient from a vehi-
cle that was stuck on railway
tracks.

PICKERING — Fourteen
William Dunbar Public School
students have a date in Ames, Iowa
next month to match their brain
.power against pupils from around
die world.
And, a local team coach is ask-
ing for community support to en-
sure all the students have a chance
to take part in the `opportunity of
a lifetime."
In the Destination Imagination
Ontario Finals in Toronto recently,
two of the school's three teams
were first -place winners, earning
them a berth in the Global Finals
May 24 to 28. .
"We're very, very excited about
how they did," says team coach
Diane Fujita.
Approximately 84 provincial
teams took part in the worldwide
program. Students formed seven -
member teams at the beginning of
the school year and were presented
a problem which challenged them
to combine skills in areas ranging
from technology to art. It can take
months to develop a solution, and
the task encourages students to
"think outside the box" by using
their creativity, says Ms. Fujita.
William Dunbar's Grade 3
team, the Brainforest Kids, fin-
ished first in the Mixing Apples
and Oranges problem. Their chal-
lenge was to tell an original story
about an unusual adoption that oc-
curs between two different
species. The Creative Critterz, a
Grade 5 squad, were tops in the "If
Music Be the Food of Life ... Play
On" problem, which challenged
them to create a musical perfor-
mance that tells a story or creates a
stood, without the use of words. A
second Grade 5 team earned sec-
ond -place honours in the Eggsplo-
ration problem and were nominat-
ed for three outstanding creativity
awards.
Frenchman's Bay Public
School sent a Grade 7 and 8 team
of gifted students to the competi-
tion for the first time. Teacher
Dennis Marton said the pupils en-
joyed the experience and he ex-
pects the school to return next year
with several teams.
``hey had a great day," he says.
Ms. Fujita notes it will be a
challenge in itself to raise the
roughly $700 per student it will
cost to go to Iowa, and students
and parents have a fund-raising
job on their hands. She hopes dol-
lars won't stand in the way and in-
vites private or corporate sponsors
to come forward and offer some
assistance to Durham's representa-
tives.
"We want to go," she says. "We
just don't want to pass this up"

Welfare
crackdown
targets
`greedy,
not needy'
The Province is cracking down
on welfare fraud with a new zero -
tolerance policy that will see people
who cheat the system become per-
manently ineligible for social assis-
tance.
But, the get -tough policy which
went into effect Saturday may leave
more children living in poverty,
warns the man who runs Durham's
welfare program.
Ontario's new zero -tolerance
policy on welfare cheats means
anyone convicted in court of social
assistance fraud based on an offence
committed after April 1 will be per-
manently disqualified from receiv-
ing future benefits.
"I don't like the prospect of cut-
ting any person off social assis-
tance, but we can't allow people to
rip off a system designed to help
those truly in red," says Ontario
Community and Social Services
Minister John Baird. "This policy is
not about saving money; it's about
preserving the integrity of the sys-
tem"
However, Paul Cloutier, head of
Durham Region's income support
division, says even with the new
zero -tolerance policy, "I think
there's always going to be a certain
small percentage of people (who)
try to obtain something they may
not be entitled to ... Certainly the de-
partment won't condone anyone
making a fraudulent application for
social assistance benefits. If there's
an intent to knowingly receive ben-
efits you're not entitled to, that
would he a case of fraud."
Mr. Cloutier says there is some
concern about the impact the new
Policy "may have on families if one
Person is disqualified for life. That
means there's going to be less
money to go around that family."
And, that could "exacerbate"
homelessness and child poverty, he
says.
According to the Province, 747
Ontario residents were convicted of
welfare fraud during the 1998-99
fiscal year and assistance was either
reduced or terminated in 16,900
cases based on the results of ehgi-
bility investigations.
The government reports, "Ibis
resulted in the identification of $60
million in social assistance that peo-
pie were not entitled to receive and
an estimated $38 million in avoiided
future costs.,,
Mr. Cloutier says his department
is still compiling statistics for 1999,
but notes, -Historically, from what
we've experienced over the past
decade or longer, (the number of
fraudulent claims) ' ranges in the
two -to -three -per cent area.
"It is a small number of situa-
tions," he says.
"It's something obviously we'd
Prefer to see not happening. But it's
not a situation that's rampant and
out of control."

ardy's Alex Trebek in Ottawa next
month.
Grade 9 student Adam Duncan, 15,
of Pickering, was among 50 pupils from
throughout the province who competed
in the Ontario finals at Don Bosco Sec-
ondary School in Etobicoke Saturday.
The April I event hosted by CITY -
TV's Harold Ho%ein was set up like the
'Final Jeopardy' segment of Mr. Tre-
bek's hit game show. Student% were
given a question they had to answer in
writing with the help of clues they were
provided.
Adam qualified for the Ontario finals
by winning the competition held by his
school in the first year Pickering High
has entered the Geography Challenge
administered by the Canadian Council
for Geographic Education.
Adam's mom Glenna Duncan is only
too happy she signed the parental con-
sent form giving him permission to
compete once again after he participated
a% a Grade 8 student last year.
'This is Adam's second year, so we
arc familiar with it:' says Glenna.
" A'c arc really proud he has won a
trip to Ottawa...
Students from Grades 7 to 10 can
compete in the oral test, which was con-
ducted at Pickering High by principal
Gary Down over lunch hour.
This year. 370 schools were regis-
tered in Ontario alone.
Pupils were tc„tcd m their knox+l-
edge of subjects sui,:ii
politics, religion, land regions, econom-
ics, currency and import%/exports.
Winners of individual school compe-
titions then wrote an exam after class
and the top 50 scorers from across the
province were chosen to participate at
the next level to qualify for a place on
the Ontario team.
The format has been the same for the
pact six to eight years.
Adam's mom reports he has really
been preparing for such competition for
some time. "Since he was about three or
four, (he has been) studying maps, flags
and stamps:' says Ms. Duncan.
'All these kids seem to have that in
common; they're map crazy.
'These kids have worked hard for
years:' she says. '"ibis is not just some-
thing you sit down and start studying:'
The Canadian championships will be
held over the Victoria Day long week-
end at Carleton University and the
Canadian Museum of Natural History in
the nation's capital. The student% will
stay at Carleton and participate in a
number of geography games over the
weekend. Titc final showdown will take
place on the morning of Monday, May
22_ Adam reports he's both nervous and
excited. He's also well prepared for the
competition.
” I have been studying. I've been
studying atlases and travel guides and
looking up definitions, things like that"
Adam's vast knowledge of geogra-
phy could stand him in good stead down
the road. " 1 have considered writing for
a travel magazine"
But. then again, there are other areas
that appeal to this whii kill. " I would

Compliments of you local Horticulturalist Rick Peeman, Pine
Midge Garden Gallery, Pickering.
With increased day length the many plants
growing in the greenhouses are starting to
show some colour. Soon it will be time for
homeowners & apartment dwellers to begin
planting up (or buying) colourful planters &
hanging baskets. Every year, new varieties of
plants become available to the homeowner,
just to make the choice of picking out plants
even more difficult!!
Proven winner varieties
have an abundance of
colourful flowers &
vigorous dense growth
New for the 2000 season:
BILDENS: GOLDEN
CARPET - lovely bright
yellow, loves hot sunny
spots
MILLION BELLS:
TERRA COTTA - small
mini petunia like flower loves the sun
SUPERTUNIA: PRISCILLA - the first semi
double cascading super petunia - light purple
MILLION BELLS: YELLOW - new colour
for 2000, last year blue & pink were really
hot! !
Some really fool proof annual flowers for hot
spots:
1) BALCON IVY GERANIUMS - these fare
the types grown in window boxes in
Germany & Austria
2) PORTULACA - available in many colours
3) SCEIOLA 'NEW WONDER" -
Australian for flower, triple award winner -
purple colour.
4) BIDENS: GOLDEN CARPET - brighl
yellow
5) HELICHRYSUM: GOLDEN BEAUTY
- long lasting yellow
Splash on the colour with a fast spreading
trailer, Ternari Verbena, a splendid ground
cover as well as a perfect
plant for baskets, patios,
balconies & window boxes.
In Japanese, Temari means
"flower ball". These plant
have colours which are the
richest you'll find in the
plant world.
How about "Nemesia"?
Never heard of it right! Well
I tried some in my garden
last year, and I plant spread
2 feet wide & flowered all summer & fall
with small snap dragon like flowers. Blue
bird is a purple -blue colour, white compact
Innorence is creamy white & fragrant.
Bacopa! The fastest selling pot plant, with
prolific white flowers is great in any
hanging basket or planter.
With so many choices of exciting colourful
plants, why would anyone fall asleep
counting sheep, when they could be
dreaming about million bells, snowstorm
Bacopa, golden carpet...
There's more to colourful plants than
simply impatiens and marigolds!

Lots of fun beim had Down Under
BY DAVID wISHARr
Special to the News Advertiser
SYDNEY — There are many
good things to say about waking
up here on a January morning,
the most obvious being the sun-
shine pouring in through the win-
dows. Another is the 'Sydney
Morning Herald,' a newspaper
written with style and humour,
and famous for its irreverent
front page Column Eight, which
this day has a woman reader's
comment on the Clinton affair.
She writes: "Thank God we got
the convicts and America got the
Puritans.**
The convicts might not have
agreed at the time, but never in
their miserable lives could they
have imagined that their little
fleet of 11 sailing ships was
going to found an astonishing
city and an amazing country.
If the convict past is part of
every Australian's awakening, as
surely it is, it makes a powerful
impression on the visitor who
considers that back in 1788 the
British government thought so
little of it that convicts were
dumped on the shore% because
they were believed to be a crimi-
nal class. It was remarkable any
of the 1,030 people with the first
fleet, including 548 male and 188
female convicts, survived.
Botany Bay. their landing place,
was not suitable for settlement,
and even after they moved to
Sydney harbour it was touch and
go for years.
Today Sydney has more than
four million people with an envi-
able lifestyle and is one of the
great cities of the world, the very
best place on the planet for a
tourist according to readers of a
glossy travel magazinc in the
U.S. and Britain.
With a climate opposite to
Canada's, this is the place to be
right now, lunching on fresh oys-
ters and prawns and mellow Aus-
tralian wine at a cafe on Sydney's
spectacular harbour, taking in the
view of the famous bridge and
Opera House, watching the little
ferries %Luny back and forth,
contemplating the 2000
Olympics nearby and spending
the afternoon on a glorious
beach.
Then, silently, an old sailing
ship rounds a point. It is the
'Bounty; a replica of Captain
Bligh's ship, and I'm thinking
again of the souls who were
transported here against their will
on ships just like this.
Instead of the beach my after-
noon is spent at Hyde Park Bar-
racks, a handsome sandstone
building designed by Francis
Greenway, who was a good ar-
chitect but a poor forger Few
museums in the world are as fas-
cinating, for this is a place where
men lived short, brutal lives
The decision to colonize Aus-
tralia was not for settlement in
the usual colonial landgrah fash-
ion, it was to relieve Britain's
overcrowded jails. Many were
convicted of trivial offences, with
transportation the penalty.
At the end of the day, strolling
back from the Racks area, where
the city began as a tent town, to
the air-conditioned splendour of
the Sheraton on the Park, one re-
calls the words of Gore Vidal,
who described Sydney as ..the
city that San Francisco thinks it

Nuclear plant
meets 10 of
14 targets
PICKERING —The Pickering nu-
clear station failed to meet four of the
14 performance indicator targets set for
February by Ontario Power Generation
(OPG).
It bettered the targets in eight cate-
gories and met them in two, according
to the latest monthly 'report card' re-
leased by the corporation.
February report card results were as
follows, for the first two months of
2000, except for measurements that are
quarterly, as indicated:
• In an index reflecting nine industry
standard performance measures set by
the World Association of Nuclear Oper-
ators (for the fourth quarter of 1999) —
79.9 per cent, bettering OPG's target of
74.4 per cent, but short of the industry
median of 94.9 per cent.
• Public safety Level One and Two
events reportable to the Atomic Energy
Control Board (AECB) — two, worse
than OPG's target of zero.
• 'Reactor trips' or the number of un-
planned automatic reactor shutdowns
per 7,000 hours — zero, better than the
OPG target of one and the industry me-
dian of 0.6.
• The number of special safety systems
which exceeded their yearly unavail-
ability target — zero, bettering the OPG
goal of one.
• Compliance with nuclear safety com-
mitmcnts to the AECB — 100 per cent,
meeting the OPG goal of 100 per cent.
• Net electrical production by the sta-
tion — 1.8 terrawatt hours (one ter-
rawatt equals one billion kilowatts),
worse than the OPG target of 2.2 TWh.
• Capability factor or amount of energy
capable of being produced per month as
a percentage of perfect performance —
60.7 per cent, worse than OPG goal
of 75.4 per cent aril also ng below
the industry median of 83.5 per cent.
• Total outage days per reactor — 15,
worse than the OPG target of 10.
• Low and intermediate level solid ra-
dioactive waste produced — 383 cubic
metres, improving on the OPG target of
'464 cubic metres.
• Radiation dose to the public from both
the A' and `B' stations — 1.26 mil-
IiiierNsite, bettering the OPG goal of
two rrriemisite.
• Major and moderate preventable spills
-- zero, meeting the OPG goal of zero.
• Total collective dose of radiation to all
on-site personnel and visitors — 4.6
renl/unit, bettering the OPG goal of 6.6
senAmit.
• Industrial Safety Accident Rate, if=
number of accidents per 200.000 work
`hours that result in lost work time, re-
stncted-work injuries or fatalities --
rmo, better than the OPG target of 0.32
and the industry median of 0.4.
*Accident severity rate or the number
of days lost for injuries per 200,000
flours worked — zero, better than the
;:OPG goal of four.
OPG states performance listed
worse than target is not an indication
the reactors are unsafe.

Read all about it: Many male students aren't page turners
BY MIKE RUTA
Staff Writer
Many young boys in
Durham dislike reading be-
, ause they don't see adult
male figures in their lives
ricking up books, lack boy-fo-
used material and don't have
reading presented to them in
an accessible manner, a survey
has revealed.
Cloyce Weaver, Durham
District School Board curricu-
lum officer, was given the task
Of following up on last year's
Grade 3 and 6 tests, adminis-
tered by the Education Quality
and Accountability Office. The
assessments showed young
girls arc better readers than
boys, and accompanying ques-
tionnaires revealed boys don't
enjoy reading.
To find out why, Mr.
Weaver interviewed 18 Grade
4 and 18 Grade 7 students
from across the region, chosen
equally from pupils who said
they like to read and young-
sters who reported they don't.
Mr. Weaver presented a report
on his findings to trustees
Monday night.
"It's a provincial problem
that has appeared in attitudes
to reading from boys;" says
Mr. Weaver, who notes the
Ministry of Education has ex-
pressed interest in the board's
findings.
The report reveals that
many books selected for class-
room reading by teachers
don't cater to the unique re-
quircments of boys, for whom
reading is not a passive experi-
ence.
Mr. Weaver says reading is
traditionally taught as a sit -
still activity in which sounds
are learned. That's not what it
takes to engage boys, who re-
quire exciting material if they
are to develop an appetite for
reading.
"All the boys were really
clear," says Mr. Weaver. "They
would read (material) if it was
action -filled:'
His report notes many boys
fondly recalled experiences in
younger grades where a
teacher read aloud to them.
Mr. Weaver believes that's be-
cause reading aloud often in-
volves dramatization, or an ac-
tion component, on the
teacher's part.
Most of the boys said they
don't see their fathers and
other adult male figures read-
ing, and determined that it's
not an activity they should be
doing.
And with many school li-
braries now run by site man-
agers for technology, Mr.
Weaver says students increas-
ingly see libraries solely as
places to work on computers
or sign out vidcus.
Besides that, students have
trouble accessing school li-
brarics because they're often
only allowed in when accom-
panied by a teacher, and can

rarely get in before, during or after
school.
Mr. Weaver recommends educa-
tors focus on the teaching of reading
skills since spelling proficiency
seems to dominate classroom in-
struction.
Teachers also have to be sensitive
to material which appeals to boys, he
suggests, in order to find a good bal-
ance of books popular with both
sexes.
His report further notes that sci-
ence fiction and information books
which appeal to boys are hard to
come by in school libraries.

JACK BRIGLEY
WHO PASSED AWAY APRIL 6, 1999
So many things have happened
Since you were called away,
So many things we could have shared
Had you been here to stay.
So many times I've cried,
If love could have saved you
You never would have died.
To hear your voice and see your smile,
To sit with you and talk awhile,
To be tother in the same old way,
Would 1Z my greatest wish today.
Your loving wife Peggy
