EDITION, March 3, 2000 Waste not wanted i"n dump s Region told to boost recycling, composting efforts Although Durham experienced a de- crease in the amount of garbage being sent to landfill last year thanks to sever- al waste management initiatives, more needs to be done to step up recycling and composting efforts here, says a re- gional councillor. Tice Region's 1999 Waste Manage- ment Annual Report presented to Durham council's works committee Tuesday reveals a total of 141553 tonnes of garbage was sent to dumps last year. down more than 2.100 tonnes from the trash hauled to landfill in 1998. "We*ve wen some decline in land- fill, but certain areas had increases;' says Durham works committee chair- man and Pickering Councillor Rick Johnson. He says one area of concern is hazardous waste. According to the annual report, 5,579 tonnes of hazardous waste, in- cluding haucries, paints and propane tanks, were kept out of landfills last year through waste diversion programs. That figure represents only a four -per cent decrease in the amount of hazardous waste diverted from dumps in 1998. Coun. Johnson notes the Region is "hoping to open more hazardous waste depot-;*' across Durham to divert more waste from landfill this year. Meanwhile, the Region collected 31 599 tonnes of recyclable materials Last year under its Blue Box Recycling Program. That material was sold for a total of 32.6 million, reports works commissioner Vic Silgailis. "The Blue Box recvchng program represented 16 ler cent of tlx: kxal waste systcm.' %1r Silgaili .tater in the annual report. "There was an increase of three per cent in tonnes and a 14 -per cent increase in rev- enue earned as compared to 1998." The Region also saw an increase in the amount of leaf and yard waste collected last vear, the report notes. In total, 51.576 tonnes of recyclable, compostable or re -useable waste was divert- ed from landfill during 1999. an increase of almost 2.(XX) tonnes from 1998. But. with 73 per cent of residential waste going di- rectly to dumps, Coun. John son maintains more needs to be done to encourage rccv- cling and composting here. qSCOW.1% cilia AMISHYOUR AMISH ► TRy 0 h ~ t1low J S438-9053 or 877-438-9053 LF t 1428 HWY02, COURTICE ON Just East Of OshawWCOUrtiae TOwnline We're online at www.durhamnews.net TUNMED. .0 1 1 NO %_ "10 Y,VW Y MUM & NO f%Wr TO 6 A10NfNS 0 -Le MM F8FnW 566C D : ANt M MI Maiew V .1.44 ! The 1999 figures were released to the public at Monday's Durham Catholic District School Board meeting. The total does not in- clude $1,254.40 spent on a hospitality suite at last year's annual general meet- ing of the Ontario Catholic School Trustees' Associa- tion or the $328.08 claimed by student representative Serena Schwab. Mary Ann Martin, for- mer board chairman and Whitby trustee, claimed the most money, a total of $5,260.57. Pickering Trustee Fran Pereira, present chairman and last year's vice-chair- man, was next on the list at $4,055.26. The remaining trustees claimed the following amounts, listed in descend- ing order: Judy Morris (Whitby), $1,871.32; Jim McCafferty (Pickering), $1,518.65; Joe Corey (Oshawa), $1,508.81; Janice Oldman (Ajax), $1,187.25; Kathy LeFort ( Brock, Scugog, Uxbridge), $1,024.17; and Fred Jones (Oshawa), $831.90. Trustee Morris suggest- ed the hospitality suite ex- pense be reviewed for this year, but others like Trustee Pereira said the suite pro- vided local board represen- tatives at the meeting a place to rest and meet with officials from other school boards. Ms. Takacs mentions the NX) children on a waiting list to play soccer. This is due to the lack of playing fields available. Does embarrassment have a price? Actor can't j ust put it all behind her What would you do for a million dollars`' I mean other than spending an evening with Regis Philbin. At least I know what I wouldn't do. A well-known department store recently ran a television ad showing a woman proudly expoustding on the fact that for the first time she is per- fe+cdy prepared for Christmas. The doorbell rings announcing arriving guests and the woman rushes to an- swer the door, unaware she :gas for- gotten to put on her skirt. Over her pantyhose, site is only wearing an apron which modestly covers her front. The camera unmercifully pans to a rear end shot. Now this woman is a real, live per- son - an actor - someone who was paid to expose her backside to thou- sands and thousands of television viewers. Not for a million dollars would I knowingly show my posteri- or enmeshed in hideously -seamed pantyhose barely concealing matron- ly panties. Oh, the horror, the horror! Karen Houston Opinion Shaper If any article of clothing was de- signed to desexualize the female body, pantyhose is the clear winner. Usually sold in neat little packages, pantyhose is only about six inches long when brand new. 'lite challenge is to find the opening for your feet so you can start to coax the six inches of material up over your legs and then, with a mighty heave, up over your lower torso. When so much has to go into so little, you can picture the end result. And it isn't pretty! I'm not denying the technological design of pantyhose isn't awe-inspir- ing. After all, its ability to subdue pounds of flesh into an immobile mass must be right up there with nu- clear fission and getting the chewy centre inside a chocolate bar. It's just that the bottom line is so gosh -darn ugly. Thanks to that advertisement, the illusion is now shattered for those men who once admired a nice turn of the leg on a woman. They now know the bare facts - where it all leads. The secret has been fleshed out - recorded for posterity. Nope, not for a million dollars would I have done that television ad. And you can be sure the actor wasn't paid anywhere near a million either. You know, it's just possible that maybe in hindsight, she regrets doing it too. My suggestion would be to open up a summer weekday league. Hire students as coaches and use the: fields that go unused during the day. I would be willing to pay more in order to have this available. As a stay-at-home mom with three children, I am looking for something to keep my youngsters occupied during the day. As it stands now, with two out of three of our children playing soccer. we are out four nights a week. In the winter, we are running to competi- tive dance three nights a week and to hockey both days on the week- end. Because of this we have cho- sen not to register for soccer this year so we can spend our summer evenings together as a family and to enjoy our meals together. I know there are other families r in the same position as we are (or worse). It would be interesting to see how many other families might be willing to go this route. I hope it isn't too late to get something of this nature organized for the sum- mer of 2000. My children love soccer and are good at it. l hate -the idea of not let- ting them play at all. Tin rustee ears s are usin ur am Officials see integrated system as a threat to Catholicism Integrated busing of Durham's separate and public school stu- dents spells the beginning of the .end of Catholic education, says a trustee. Durham Catholic District School Board Whitby Trustee Judy Morris told colleagues Monday she can't see how the board can justify a fully integrat- ed busing system for students planned for 2001. Once Catholic parents see their children riding the same bus as public board students, they might wonder why the youngsters can't attend the same school, she said. "The threat to the Catholic school system is not from the out- side, but from the inside," said Trustee Morris, repeating a com- ment she said she had beard be- fore. The two boards, through -their Joint Services Committee (JSC), have been for years discussing joini busing as a means of saving on transportation costs. The JSC recommended after a Feb. 8 meeting that fully integrated bus- ing be implemented in 2001 if ap- proved by trustees of both boards. That came as a surprise to two .p:..Wo .T. .•• t.a'w1w war wsa JIM McCAFFERTY We have wasted two years because of this board..' trustees Monday. "It sure would be nice for us to find out before the JSC finds out," Pickering Trustee Jim Mc- Cafferty said, noting the target date has never come before the board. "We have wasted two years because of this board sitting around and doing nothing" on joint busing. Joe Corey, Oshawa trustee and JSC vice-chairman, said consul- tation with the parent communi- FRAN PEREIRA 'We'll co-ordinate the bases . when it's reasonabk.' ties has to take place before the matter comes before the board for approval. Board vice-chairman Mary Ann Martin defended the board's transportation department and de- nied board officials have been dragging their heels on the issue. Trustee Morris also wondered when fully integrated busing was discussed. Education director Grant An- drews said, "The goal from the start was that we move to an inte- grated model" Since timing was a key point of contention, the boards reached "a compromise in positions" to go with a 2001 tar- get date. "We have to face reality;' Trustee Corey said. "The Educa- tion Improvement Commission has been promoting this since day one ... If we don't keep going on it you know what's going to hap- pen, there's going to be no trans- portation'" Trustees approved the JSC re- port, but Trustee McCafferty was opposed and Trustee Morris did not vote. In an interview, board chair- man Fran Pereira said integrated busing does not mean all students at the two boards will be riding buses together. "We'll co-ordinate the buses where it's reasonable;' she said. The 2001 "projected date" has been a general target in the past, mentioned in a fall, verbal report, said Ms. Pereira. Busing is currently integrated to varying degrees in north Durham, and is to be expanded to Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and Os- hawa. MARCH 3. 2000 Separate board must sell Sun Life shares The demutualization of Sun Life of Canada, approved by policy hold- ers in December, means the Durham separate school board is no longer permitted to be registered as a shareholder of the new company, Sun Life Financial Services of Canada, a staff report noted Mon- day. Durham Catholic District School Board business superintendent David Visser explained the insurer is changing from a company owned by participating policy holders to one owned by shareholders. Since the board is a governmental entity, it can't own shares so the 36,014 it now holds must be sold. Their esti- mated value last September was between $500.000 and $760.000. Board education director Grant Andrews, answering a question from Oshawa Trustee Joe Corey, said trustees can "of course" have a say in how the money is spent. Pickering schools best at spreading the news Two Pickering schools put out the best newsletters last year. Catholic board trustees announced Monday - St. Anthony Daniel Catholic School won the best newsletter award at the elementary level for the 1996•-99 school year. Principal Eliza- beth Snow and vice-pnnc3pW Carol David were on hand to receive the plaque at the Durham Catholic Dis- tnct School Board meeting. Last years best high school newsletter was produced by St. Mary Catholic Secondary School, which was rep- resented by principal Michael Bak and secretary Mary Edmunds. The corruruttee which selected the winning newsletters was corn - prised of Whitby Trustee Judy Mor- ns, board chairman and Pickering Trustee Fran Pereira, student repre- sentative Serena Schwab, Pickering Trustee Jim McCafferty, and Os- hawa schools superintendent Chris Hurst. Officer a VIP for teaching kids about VAN% imam-nCIS Retired Durham Regional Po- lice Constable Peter Bramma was thanked by the Catholic school board Monday for rurtrtirtg the Val- ues, Irtfluerices and Peers program in local datsses for several years. "our shxlerMs loved his ertftiusi- asm and looked forward lo each visit," said board education director Grartt Andrews. Mr Brar rna recalled that, when the program was lauriched in 1984, only three schools were involved Last year, 140 separate, public and private schools took part in the pro- gram for Grade 6 students. The dedsion-making program is aimed at that age group because "lhe decisions they make in the next tour years and the friends they choose could affect them for the rest of their lives," Mr. Bramma said. My name is Dana Kimpel. I'm a Shift Manager for Pickering B Nuclear generating station. I supervise the work of one of the five shift crews ' responsible for operating the station. We do every- thing from repairing heavy equipment tc refueling the reactors to calibrating and maintaining the safety systems. My family and I live in Ajax, so I have an added personal stake in making sure things are done safely., a In that connection, my crew of 60 recently com- pleted om pleted its 14th year without a lost -time accident. That's 2.4 million person -hours — a world class t `Yry 1 .. safety achievement in any industry. , - ,,:- ; ,;,•_, Q Now have you managed to maintain that kind of safety record? What's the secret? A Trainiag and experience. Pickering Nuclear invests heavily in formal safety training, and the people on my crew have that training updated every year. But it doesn't just happen in the classroom. Our more experienced senior people also pass on their experience on the job, and the newer people learn how to work with safety in mind, right from the start. For more information, visit our web site at: www.ontariopowergeneration-com/pickering Q It's good that none of your workers have had an accident. But does that make the station any safer for the surrounding neighbourhood? A Yes. The people on my crew are trained to put safety first — our own safety and the safety of the community. In fact, I think it's impossible to sepa- rate the two. When we do our jobs safely, carefully and correctly, we avoid the risk of injuring ourselves and our colleagues, but we also ensure the safety Of the people who live around us by doing our jobs to the highest standards. In my mind, worker safety and public safety are two sides of the same coin. ONTARIOruntl' GEN6tATI0N t c •ii ilI'' ?:a.. o- 1995 DODGE CARAVAN SE Super nice van. The leader of the provincial oppo- sition was in town for a series of dis- cussions with officials from the Ajax - Pickering Health Centre. Pickering councillors and members of the Ajax - Pickering Board of Trade in an at- tempt to learn more about local con- cerns. "Transportation is a big issue for a lot of the local businesses here," Duncan Fletcher, board of trade provincial government relations di- rector, told Mr. McGuinty. "The community really thinks it's important that (Hwy. 407) goes out to Hwy. 35/115 (rather than stopping at Brock Road in Pickering)...We need some action right now," said Mr. Fletcher. retail advertising manager of the Ajax -Pickering News Advertis- er, during a round -table discussion at the board of trade's office in Picker- ing. Mr. McGuinty responded that the need for infrastructure improvements is one of the "competing interests" the government needs to address as it moves into a surplus position. However, he did not answer direct questions from board of trade mem- bcrs who wanted to know why Hwy. 407 is being stopped at Brock Road. Instead, Mr. McGuinty asked busi- ness leaders questions about the local economy. "I want to nurture business, en- courage business. I want to find our edge. but at the same time I attach a (huge) value to health and educa- tion;' he said. That comment prompted a series of questions about the Liberals' plans to address public concerns on those two issues. On the health care front, Mr. McGuinty said it's time to put in place "24/7 health care". He believes a 24-hour health care help line should be set up to provide better customer service to the public. And, rather than heading straight to the emergency room, Mr. McGuinty said he'd like people to first call that help line, then use the Internet to ac- cess information about their condi- tion, then go to their specific health care team. "The problem with health care re- structuring is we got it wrong. The banks got it right" as they introduced ATM machines and then started clos- ing branches. "First they introduced the new be- fore cutting back on the old," said Mr. McGuinty, who contended the government did the opposite with Ontario's health care system. Mr. McGuinty said he wouldn't have cut $800 million from the health care system. "It takes more money to get the ATMs in place and then you can close the branches." But, his recommendations on health care were not well received by board of trade members. "If I'm in bed and can't breathe I'm not going to look it up on my computer," said board gener- al manager Lesley Whyte. On education. Mr. McGuinty said if he was premier he "would begin to champion some of the things we are doing right in pub- lic education... It's become really fashionable to dump on teach- ers. "I would have brought a dif- ferent attitude to public educa- tion" and would have introduced a plan to increase technology in schools. And, when questioned about his stand on municipal restruc- turing here, he said his "sense is what the Province wants is one big city of Durham." But, Mr. McGuinty didn't offer his views. "We didn't hear any clear plans or alternative solutions," Ms. Whyte said following the meeting. "We had hoped to hear more on his position on municipal re- structuring and transportation infrastructure development, but it wasn't forthcoming." She noted board members ap- preciated the chance to get to- gether with Mr. McGuinty. The meeting provided an "opportunity to throw some tough questions at him about health care, education and trans- portation." DALTON MCGUINTY '1 want to nurture business, encourage business.' The use of fragrance to gently calm, soothe and induce feelings of comfort, well-being and solace has been employed for centuries. It makes sense to make sure that smells in your home arc pleasant to the nose!!! Try: • Using Home Fragrances - Scented Candles - Potpourri - A bowl of sliced lemons (in water). Try using: Crisp cotton tablecloths, they add a sense of light and air to tired rooms. Sheer fabric drapes to softly filter light. Tie them loosely tab -style to the rod so that they will fall casually to the floor. - New toss cushions in a light colour or a simple pattern will freshen a room and unclutter the appearance of the sofa. Offering passengers the choice of a 9- ,,r 14 -day cruise and more ports of call than any other cruise line serving Alaska is the way it's done. One such port offered a hike like no other. Alaska should be dubbed `the state of a thousand trails,' and the views made me %ant to come back for more. Juneau, Alas- Ka's beautiful capital city, is a hiker's par- dise. I felt fortunate Juneau was one of the irts of call offered by the World Explorer cruises flagship S.S. Universe Explorer. The relatively small ship, carrying 739 issengers and 330 crew, has a giant itin- rary, covering 14 days rather than the visual seven and twice the number of hours :t each port than any other Alaskan cruise ne. As we put into the port of Juneau, the ,Aormative 'going ashore' leaflet told me :11 1 needed to know about the Mount xoberts trail 1 had planned to tackle that Av. Constructed by a Catholic priest in 911, this trail offered steep switchbacks .:id panoramic views of Alaska's capital ty. With an elevation gain of 4,210 feet, c three-hour hike was both challenging :id rewarding. The paths were well-groomed. easy to IIIow but challenging at times and I was preciative of the benches found at the .any Icx>kouts offered along the way. Iimpscs through the trees revealed a pho- grapher's paradise. Humanity and nature .ended beautifully as I gazed over hotels .:td office buildings, over the light blue sea ward the distant backdrop of the majestic uuntains. `1% hike continued above the snow line nervous squirrels and birds perched on ;:cc limbs looked down at their latest visi- r. At the three-quarter mark I encoun- tcred the remaining snow pack. Undaunted, with my toes neatly placed into the divots made by other hikers I con- tinued along until I reached the Mt. Roberts Aerial Tramway, which offered a bird's eye view of the city and valleys be- yond. Opened in 1996, the tramway boasts a 170 -foot terminal and 3,000 square -foot platform connected by a covered walkway leading to the loading deck. From my lofty perch above Juneau I savoured the panoramic view of pine -covered moun- tains before heading to the cafe for some coffee and refreshments. And refreshed I was, as I strolled to the loading deck to board the tram for a thrilling ride down to the cruise ship dock. 1 still had a good portion of the day re- maining for sightseeing in Juneau, before re -boarding to contunue our Alaskan ad- venture. What a day! I discovered that World Explorer Cruis- es offer over 50 shore excursion trips at 14 locations, with activities from white -water rafting to shopping. Lectures offered on board will quench your thirst for knowl- edge as will the largest floating library of 15,(XX) volumes. You'll learn more about Alaska from noted lecturers who travel on- board. You'll taste the fresh, local delicacies. You'll get to touch the actual face of a glacier. See wildlife. Photograph and take home handmade Ictal crafts. You'll feel, as I did, as if you're opening the dcx,r to a new horizon yourself. Special sorts of entertainment continue with slide shows and movies about the his- tory, folklore, geology, art and wildlife of Alaska. Typical topics include the Alaskan pipeline and liquid gold. Alaska and West- ern Canada's 'Continental Drift,' gold dig- ger history, sea borne mammals (.dolphins. seals, killer and humpback whales), mol- lusks/invertebrates and other marine life, Alaskan native art and woodcarving ...the list goes on. There's enough time to do it all. Enough time to become part of this majestic won- derland. Yes, World Explorer Cruiscs does indeed keep everyone happy with so much to learn, so many ports of call and at a pace suited for all ages and experience. Truly, an Alaska Cruise with a differ- ence. Pine Ridge Pumas LOSSA hoops champs Pickering school edges Oshawa McLaughlin in final PICKERING — The Pine Ridge Secondary School Pumas junior boys' basketball team used its impressive de- fensive skills to nail down a 51-45 victory over Oshawa's McLaughlin Collegiate Tro- jans to take the regional hoops championship last week. Staff adviser Dan Dekking says the Pine Ridge juniors used their pressure defence to stifle the Trojans' offence in the Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) fi- nals at St. Stephen's Catholic Secondary School in Bow- manville. "We got good pressure on defence and we got good con- tributions from people coming off the bench. We used all our players in the game and they all did a really good job," says Dekking. To get to the LOSSA final, the Pumas juniors pummelled Bowmanville High School 82- 57 in the semi-final contest. The Pumas will now put their 16-2 overall record on the line when they play in a Toronto tournament against teams from Toronto and dis- trict next week. Pine Ridge's first-round game will be played against Toronto's Oakwood Collegiate at East York Collegiate Mon- day afternoon.
