"I'm concerned with the in- crease in teen violence and school shootings, which are esca- lating,' Ms. Sheller said in an in- terview. And. here's hoping the politicians handling our money keep refill- ing the prescription. Most recently. the Province announced Friday it's cough- ing up an extra $6 million in operating funds to the Rouge Val- ley Health System (RVHS). That allocation. combined with the $4.4 million Quaoen's Park injected in December. will wipe out the deficit faced last fall by the Ajax and Pickering Health Centre and the Centenary Health Centre in Scartx>rough. "ibis is a great day for health care in the east' says RVHS chairman Gale Mossman. "Ifs clear that this government is listening to the health care concerns of this community and is responding very positively." Indeed. The Progressive Conservatives seem to be acting upon arra residents' demands that we want our hard-earned tax dollars spent on looking after its should we become ill. Also at the end of last week. the Ministry of Health named Centenary the site of a Regional Chikkcn's Health Centre for west Durham and east Toronto. That will mean youngsters who require complex or specialized treatments won't neces- sarily have to travel to Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children for care. That comes as welcome medicine for any local parent who's ever had to rush their precuts wce one to Sick Kids while battling traffic congestion, your heart in your thnnt as time licks away. every second seeming like an eternity. The next badly needed remedy for the local health system would be full cardiac surgery services hued at the Scarbor- ough site of the RVHS. The health ministry is expected to make a decisbn on that in March. Queen's Park can only rule in one way. After all. York Re- gion and Mississauga are getting full cardiac care cense.. close to home. Tbts area hoods and deserves the same treat- ment. So say 18.000 local residents who have signed petitions circulated by the Crxnnwnity Cardiac Care Task Force in favour of improved services for heart patients at Centenary. Making the argument even mors compelling is the fact the cx- nung cardiac bolities at the Scarborough hospital mean it could have advanced services for hart patients ticking within a year if the Province comes through with the funding. The Tones have so far been listcning to our health care seeds. They must continue to do so. Of course. it will help im- mensely if federal Finance Minister Paul Martin nukc.% health are spcndmg a pnonty in his budget next Monday acid re- ams tax phoney we send to Ottawa back to the Province. They simply won't be able to afford it. Truckee took to the Oshawa Holiday Ina en masse Sun- day to Protest high gas prices. With the cost of diesel hitting 70 cents per litre, the cost of truaking will hit astronomical rates. The big transport compansc% will ssmply charge far more for their services and. in the end. the public will pay as always. This country runs on its wheels and with huge hikes in fuel prices will come rampant inflation. That's bad for us all. Remember the dark days of 1981-82 when dou- ble-digit inflation, high unemployment and interest rates jumped over 20 per cent? %Nc can't go back to those days. Petro Canada has decided to take action to let furious drivers know where their gas dollars go. Tithe company will Put stickers on its pumps and produce detailed bills which explain exactly how much the fells and Province take in taxes from each litre. The big oil companies have also sug- gested their profit margins are small, about 2 cents Per litre. The cost of refining the dl make up about 5-6 cents while the cost of purchasing the oil from Oil Producing Export Countries has nearly doubled over the past year. OPEC countries are making a fortune and we're paying the bill. What can be done? For starters, Finance Minister Paul Martin, who delivers the federal budget next Monday, can announce an immediate end to the 1.5 cent -per -litre tax he imposed in 1995 to help eliminate the deficit. The tax has done its work, the deficit is gone. so the tax should disap- pear. He could also trim l cent off the excise tax. In addi- tion, Ernie Eves. Ontario's finance minister, can announce a tax cath of at least I or 2 cents per litre when he delivers his budget in a few months. It may only total four or five cents a hire, but it's a start Government must lead the charge and further examination Of gas prices is still needed. The night vismon allows the driver to see -past the glare of the car ahead of you" and also allows motorists to see other cars or people at the side of the road. "That will be more prolif- ic:' Mr. Low predicts. Other innovations include sensors that will detect objects behind a vehicle and warn the driver when he gets too close. "We'll see more of that across a wider range of vehicles:' Mr. Low says. Meanwhile, instant com- munication has arrived in the automotive industry. As land is lost. ensuring that there's a steady supply of food will be essential. That means hio-technology will be more prevalent. he says. "The only way to get high enough yields and predictable yields, we have to get geneti- cally modified foods:' Mr. Herrema says. "1 see a lot of potential, but we don't under- stand it yet" African countries would he happy with hio-technology, as corn yields are limited by a virus that affects plants, be notes. Scientist can install a gene in the corn so the virus couldn't attack the crop. "We're less than seven years away from realizing that," he says. "Btu -technolo- gy could help some of these countries to feed themselves" And that may become a part of Canada's future. he warns. "As a farmer. 1 find it to he a very useful tool.
