BY AL RIVE7T Sports £fluor PICKERING — A Picker- ing roan and some old neigh- bourhood buddies will return to their childhood street to relive their hockey dream,. Daron Robertson, 28, has rounded up 15 or so of his childhood buddies for the first, and possibly annual, street hockey reunion this Saturday, for all the guys he grew up with on Miriam Road in the Bay Ridges area of the city. Robertson recalls that throughout his childhood and into his early teens, every year from October until April was reserved for getting together with the neighbourbood gang for rot d hockey, usually seven days a week. "Playing the game itself — saw hockey — was a huge part of our growing up and it's been at least 15 years since we played," says Robertson, who works for the CBC in Toronto on the national chews broadcast. But, the road hockey re- union with his friends, who all reside within the GTA, is some- what bittersweet for Robertson. In the past several years, four fathers of his street hockey friends have died, which brought the players together under less -than -happy circum- stances on each occasion. "I thought this may be a more enlightening way to re- unite every one, instead of see- ing one another at funerals;' he explains. Whine Robertson felt some- what uncomfortable approach- ing each of his old friends with the idea of a street hockey re- union, every one he has spoken o has been receptive and will be on the street with sticks, balls and neu on Saturday. "I was a little nervous at first about it. I thought they might think I'm a dork doing this, but when I called them, they all said 'oh, for sure, we'll be there', so, it has all been posi- tive," says Robertson. While his buddies put their road hockey sticks away long ago in favour of careers, mar- riages and children, Robertson says they're looking forward to reliving what was a big part of growing up in Pickering. Having given up hope Prcmier Mike Harris will run for leader of a united right-wing federal party. some Progressive Conservatives are pushing for a Tory who more than anyone paved the way for Mr. Harris, but are probably a decade too late. Conservatives, particularly in eastern Ontario. where he comes from, and Reformers are making a case for Bob Runciman. Mr. Har- ris's consumer minister. Mr. Runciman has said he has no plans to run, but his admirers feel he is open to the idea. Mr. Runciman has a special niche in the legislature which is rarely noted. He is seen as some- times a loose cannon, hanging away unnecessarily. He has a short fuse. But he is also the only MPP who advocated right-wing causes consistently throughout the 1980s, when they were distinctly unfashionable. Mr. Harris and Mr. Runciman were elected to the legislature at the same time in 1981 and Mr. Runciman spoke up quickly, against the interventionist, Red Tory policies of then premier William Davis. Mr. Runciman was the only Tory to criticize Mr. Davis's gov- ernment for buying part of an oil company, supposedly to help it understand how the oil market vital to industry works, and he said many traditional Conservatives would be outraged. He was also a lonely Tory voice opposing Mr. Davis's spending on a domed spits stadi- um in Toronto and was vindicated when taxpayers lost a combined $600 million on these two misad- ventures. Mr. Runciman urged his own r . Eric Dowd I Queens Park party unsuccessfully to) oppose new taxes by any government, even the Conservatives in power federally. Mr. Runciman suggested pub- lic referenda to settle some impor- tant issues, which Mr. Harris has now provided for. He spoke, when most of his parry was quiet, against extending benefits to gay partners of civil servants, saying this undermines the family and society. Mr. Runciman was among the few Ontario Tories to support fi- nancier Peter Pocklington, with his promise of a flat rather than graduated income tax, for federal leader - could there be any strong,-, right-wing credential? Mr. Runciman suffered for his views. He had no chance of be- coming a cabinet minister under Mr. Davis. When Davis's succes- sor, Frank Miller, made him a minister, Mr. Runciman said he would 'privatize services wherev- er possible,' but Mr. Miller's pre- miership was so short he had no opportunity. Throughout this time Mr. Har- ris had virtually nothing to say that suggested he had right-wing views. For much of it he was his party's house leader, noted more for his knowledge of procedures than philosophies. When Mr. Harris ran for leader in 1990 he promised to end rent controls, bring health and social service costs under control and impone a small user fee for some health service,, but mostly he was vague. He promised also to care for the needy. increase housing for the Por and strengthen environ- mental protection among other expanded xxvices and there was not much hint of the extreme right-winger he would soon be- come. Mr. Harris may not have had any right-wing ideas before this and when he got them could easi- ly have picked up some from Mr. Runciman, the only MPP much advocating them. Mr. Harris may also have con- cluded from watching Mr. Runci- man that right-wing views were: j unacceptable to many Tories at that time and it was prudent to keep quiet on them until he se- cured leadership, so either way he owes a debt to Mr. Runciman. Mr. Runciman also has handi- caps. He is a presentable speaker, but apt to fly off the handle. Among other incidents, he has been expelled from the legislature i twice for calling then New Demo- crat premier Bob Rae a hypocrite and shouting insults at a minister and resigned from a legislature committee after he lost his temper and swore at some Liberals. Mr. Runciman also almost ran against Mr. Harris for leader, but hacked off saying he lacked en- thusiasm and is unlikely to regain it a decade later. Nor is the right- wing federal party likely to pick him at 57 even if he is the only Tory who makes Harris look like a mil(luctoast, bleeding heart left - liberal. Although many winter days are full of sun- shine, the number of daylight howl is limited. Here are some money -saving lips that should help bright- en your days during the dark depths of winter: • Install solid-state dimmers so that you can vary the light levels of your incandescent fixtures to match the need This saves energy and extends bulb life. • Turn lights off when they aren't in use. Fluo- rescent lights shen ld he turned off if you are out of the room for more than 10 minutes, saving energy and prolonging lamp life • Avoid having tai many lights controlled by a cent lighting when possible.
