Ward 3 Local Councillor David Pickles plans to introduce a motion at Council Monday asking col- leagues to 'respectfully request that the provincial and federal govern- ments give the utmost priority to the protection of children from sexual exploitation as they deliberate this important case " The move comes in response to a B.C. Supreme Court ruling in favour of John Robin Sharpe, a B.C. man charged with possession of child pornography. The court sup- ported Mr. Sharpe's right to free- dom of expression and personal pn- vacy. The Supreme Court of Canada held two days of hearings into the case Jan. 18 and 19. It isn't expect- ed to make a ruling for months. Coun. Pickles says he "would like to (lobby) the federal govern- ment to let them know what the general population thinks." Durham won't form race relations committee Durham Region has decided against establishing a race relations committee, preferring instead to see local municipalities and community groups carry on their work. A report to Regional council last week noted race relations groups in Durham include the Multi -Cultural Council of Oshawa -Durham; and separate committees in Pickering, Ajax and Whitby. And, the Durham public and separate school boards are both active in fostering im- proved race relations. T here are already established, well-known and respected commu- nity groups involved in race relation issues in the Region of Durham," the report from Region chief admin- istrative officer Garry Cubitt noted. "It is important that in recognizing the value of these committees the Region does not duplicate or im- pede the work they have already successfully accomplished„ The request to start a Regional race relations committee was made a year ago by Roland Rutland, one of the founders of the Ajax commit- tee. Mr. Cubitt said in his report, if Durham's various race relations committees want to hold a sympo- sium to exchange ideas, experiences or plans, the Region would help co- ordinate such a forum. The project is supported by the landowner, the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, and kicked off Jan. 28, when 10 wild turkeys were released into the Rouge Valley, a news re- lease from the partnership re- ports. The wild turkey was native to this part of Ontario until the beginning of the 1900s, when diminished habitat and unregu- lated hunting led to its disap- pearance, the news release notes. "We are happy to see the re- turn of these beautiful birds;" says Ron Christie, chairman of the Rouge Park Alliance. "Their presence brings increased edu- cational possibilities and cre- ates exciting new opportunities for the public to view these large, vocal birds in the Rouge River Valley." MNR matched a financial contribution of $3,900 from Rouge Park Alliance in 'in-kind funds' for the project, which in- volved capturing birds from wild populations in King, Georgina and Brock townships and releasing them into the Rouge Park. As the local population be- comes established and breeds, some may he captured and rein- troduced to other appropriate sites in Ontario, according to the news release. Since 1984, the Ontario Fed- eration of Anglers and Hunters, the National Wild Turkey Fed- eration (Canada) and MNR have worked together to reintro- duce turkeys into Ontario. It is estimated 24,(X)n wild turkeys now populate the area from Cornwall to Sarnia and north to Port Severn. "I'm very sensitive as we go through his- tory that building a legacy is a long-term process;' he said, noting the draft trans- portation plan unveiled by the hoard last week will undergo extensive consultations. That plan, entitled Removing Road- blocks, recommends the expansion of' GO transit bus services leading out of Toronto as well as the creation of seven new suburban transit corridors, two of which would pass through portions of Durham. The first is a connection from the Lakeshore West GO station through Bramp- ton, Vaughan. The second transit corridor through Durham would he a GTA east corridor from Bow- manville through Oshawa. Whitby, Ajax and Pickering to the new Sheppard Avenue sub- way line. The plan also calls for upgrades to GO train services, including all -day service on the Lakeshore line from Burlington through to Whitby. "The report is very focused on transit only," said Durham Region chairman Rog, -,r Anderson of the GTSB's plan in an inter- view Thursday, noting in order for transit to work, "it has to he functional, accessible, convenient and seamless. If it isn't these things people aren't going to use it. "It's very, very important to coordinate (transit) service across the GTA," he added. The GTSB, headed up by former Metro Toronto chairman Alan Tonks, is currently preparing a report on its future role. The report was originally sched- uled to be compacted by Dec. 14, but Mr. Tonks indicates it will be finished by June when it will be delivered to Municipal Affairs Minister Tony Clement. Clearly, the idea is to have the Province make a tali on local gover- nance well ahead of the November elections so changes, if the Province so decides, can be made in advance. More and more it would appear, regional gov- ernments could be dead. The local pic- ture could be radically different by this fall. While all of that is in discussion, more pressing problems persist. GTA gridlock is a real, ongoing, valid con- cern and ultimately will be the biggest challenge facing the GTSB. The GTA -Hamilton -Wentworth cor- ridor already includes 5.1 million peo- plc and half as many cars. The popula- tion of the area will jump to over seven million less than 20 years from now. Clearly, a highly efficient network of roads and public transit — a so-called ,seamless'— ribbon is vital. Moving people is only part of the picture. Industry with its countless just -in -time' transports needing to Flow through the region, requires roads which work. The GTSB has produced a plan called Removing Roadblocks which calls for improved transit. Seven new suburban transit corridors would be cre- ated under the plan, with two of those going through Durham. GO train ser- vices would be upgraded. Durham chairman Roger Anderson agrees transit improvements are neces- sary. "It has to be functional, accessible, convenient and seamless. If it isn't these things people aren't going to use it. It's very, very important to co-ordi- nate (transit) service across the GTA;' said Mr. Anderson. For too long, Durham has been the forgotten piece in the GTA puzzle. It's critical Durham reps on the GTSB work to bring up the issue of transit improve- ments in our region. We are the highest growth zone in the GTA and, as such, are currently underserved by GO Tran- sit and the highway system. Mr. Tonks must be made aware of our needs and the requirement that 401 widening, more on and off ramps and the 407 extension go ahead. That should be part of any presentation made to the Province. Contrary to the impression given in the Jan. 19 Pickering News Advertiser, this road is not a significant collector. Considering the alternative routes, and their re- spective speed limits, the capacity of Twyn Rivers Drive represents only about three per cent of the total traffic capacity across the Rouge Valley. This is hardly a vital road. The traffic on this road may number in the hundreds of vehicles Teen violence Just say `No' J Young people must take a stand against violence by peers Teens today are becoming more vi- olent than ever. There have been nu- merous shootings, attacks, beatings and fights over the course of the last few years. We hear about events such as the Colorado shooting and teen gangs. Perhaps one of the misconcep- tions teens have today is most think, "It will never happen to me." It can. Most teens feel safe in -their schools and find it hard to believe violence can happen there. We shouldn't think this and neither should parents. Violence is not something that should be taken lightly whether it is 40 -year-olds fight- ing in wars or 15 -year-olds fighting in gangs. It's truly sad to hear about teens who snap and bring guns to school to take supposed `revenge' on those who have hurt them in their lives. It's just as bad when a gang will beat up a kid they don't know because of the way he looks, talks or because he glances at the gang the 'wrong' way. Rival gangs will fight as well endangering the lives Lauren Souch !ion Shaper of the young people caught in their crossfire. I believe we can reduce the amount of violence in our community by prop- erly educating young students and making sure they know about recent events. All it takes is one student to re- alize how wrong violence is and to take a stand. One teen's positive actions can prove something to others. Next, that person's friends may join him and so on, until you have a full-fledged rally going on. All it takes is one person. One person in a community who stands up for what is right and says 'No' to violence. If you are troubled or believe you are being mocked by your peers, don't resort to violence or a gang to make yourself feel better. Talk to someone who cares. If you don't, in the end, gangs and violence will only make you feel worse when someone gets hurt. And that someone could very well be someone close to you. Gangs are not `cool,' no matter what your peers or friends may tell you. If the people you are friends with join a gang or try to get you to do something you don't want to do, don't. You have a choice. It's your life and you don't have to do what others do, no matter what the situation. All it takes is one person to take a stand within his school for the rest to realize what a serious threat violence is. Will you be that person? Has a re- cent traffic study been done? In addition, the claim that it takes some residents as much as 20 minutes longer on an alternative route does not reflect my experi- ence. I live on Twyn Rivers Drive about 200 metres from the brow of the hill and therefore I'm inconve- nienced more than most by having to travel east to Aliona Road then south to take Hwy. 2 and west to the on-ramp to Hwy. 401 at Port Union Road. Yet my extra travel time is certainly less than five min- utes. Twyn Rivers Drive doesn't just cross the valley; it runs through a provincial park. If this road had not been in existence before the Rouge Valley obtained park status, it is unlikely that anyone would con- done or promote its construction now. Indeed, once Hwy. 407 is completed through to Brock Road, at which time Twyn Rivers Drive would provide less than two per cent of the cross -valley road capac- ity, it would be an appropriate time to close Twyn Rivers Drive to through traffic. Instead of keeping the road open for the convenience of a few impatient drivers, the vast majority of local residents would be better served recreationally when Twyn Rivers Drive is closed permanently. Dalk by Joe Duarte Murder is a despicable crime that often shocks and outrages the community in which it hap- pens. And that shock is height- ened when the victim is a popular person within that community. For an example, we have to look no further than the 1914 Whitby murder of Billy Stone. A tale we call 'Whitby Station Calling'. I've been shot:' At about 12:30 a.m. on the night of Dec. 15, those chilling words echoed along the wires as 21 -year old William 'Billy' Stone's life drained from his body. By all accounts, Billy Stone (so called to distinguish him from his father, William) was a popular young man who always wore a smile and was quick with a cheery word for those he met. The 'Gazette and Chronicle,' Whitby's weekly paper at the time, described him as a "thrifty young man, and the life of the home" who had a splendid physique and was fearless. Those traits, despite his 5 -foot -5 frame, enabled him to physically evict the tramps who tried to take up temporary residency at Whitby station, some of them consider- ably bigger than he. So well-known and liked was Billy that the news of his murder spread like wildfire across Whit- by and along the Grand Trunk line from Belleville to Toronto. It also left a community grasping at straws to find his killer, with clues (many of them pointless) coming from all fronts. Fred Wurhley, an accountant at `Whitby Hospital for the In- sane', was probably the last be- sides the killer to see Billy Stone alive. t five minut:s past mid- night, he saw Billy work- ing in the station's office with the lights on; the lights in the waiting area were extin- guished. At 12:15, Billy signed the Montreal Express (out of Toron- to) into his log -book - his last entry. At about the same time, he talked by phone to Gerald Baker, the night operator at Oshawa Sta- tion. It is believed the killing oc- curred around 12:35 a.m.. At 12:37, Billy calls Bell Central and asks operator Les Cormack to ring Chief of Police McGrotty, saying he's been shot. When asked by whom, Billy says he doesn't know. At 12:42, Billy calls Edward Keeler (the Grand Trunk dis- patcher at Belleville) to tell him ty-4tM4. of the shooting, saying he is "about all in ... getting weaker all the time." At about 1: 15 a.m., Chief Me - Grotty arrives at the station to find Billy "quite dead" on the of- fice floor, with a bullet wound in the left chest area. There is very little blood on his clothing and a few drops on the floor. The door to the office is closed and locked, the ticket win- dow is closed but not locked and the sole light is provided by a lamp whose shade is turned to aim light at the tracks outside the office. A bloody hand print — be- lieved not to be Billy's since there is no blood on his hands — is found on a cabinet nearby. The phone is hanging off the desk with the receiver under the body. fter piecing together the crime, it is believed the fatal bullet came from the waiting area through the window and struck Billy in the chest, nar- rowly missing the left ventricle of his heart and lodging in his left lung. That's a hell of a shot from a dark area to another dark area. A later theory proposed Billy was shot in the waiting room, outside his office, and managed to stumble in to call for help be- fore expiring. There were several theories as to the murderer. Some were im- mediately discarded, others were followed through but proved in- conclusive. One of the former was that Billy was shot by one of the tramps he had tried to evict from the station. This was immediately discarded as tramps were not known to carry firearms. Another was robbery, since Billy did not have any posses- sions on his person when his body was discovered. It was sur- mised the killer had searched the body, taken what he'd found, and left the bloody hand -print on the cabinet as he arose from search- ing the body. 0 n closer observation, this theory was discarded for several reasons — the killer would have hung around for about 15 minutes in order to take Billy's personal possessions, yet left the cash drawer, ticket wicket and a glass case filled with contributions to the Canadian Pa- triotic Fund undisturbed. Later, Billy's watch was found at home, in a drawer in his room. It was also surmised that the bloody print was actually expec- torant as Billy's lung filled with blood, since the splotch contained no finger -prints. Then there was the mysterious stranger theory (isn't there always one?). At around I I p.m., a man (believed to be of unsound mind and, therefore, a patient at the nearby asylum) was seen lurking around the McLaughlin summer cottage at Heydenshore Park. He ran off in an easterly direction (opposite to where the station is) and was not seen in the area again. At about midnight, a similar man threatened the foreman of a crew of Italians, who were camped near Whitby Junction while they worked on a new sewer system. e was supposedly desper- ate to get to the station. At about the same time, a worker at the camp saw a man fit- ting the same description lurking about the camp, conceivably try- ing to open windows in hopes of finding shelter. He ran off and was not seen again until a couple of hours later. On closer inspection, it is be- lieved these were not the same men since the occurrences hap- pened at about the same time but about a mile apart. The description also fit that of a man who boarded an eastbound train in Toronto. He is reported to have told a fellow passenger he was going east to seek revenge. He got off the train some- where in the Pickering area and was last seen walking eastward along the tracks. triose facts seem to support theory that Billy Stone's kille: was a jilted lover. According to friend Harr\ Birmingham, Billy had been see- ing a woman from Port Union foi about two years and was suppos edly contemplating marriage bu wanted to better his financial sit- uation first. To support that, was the fact that he had recently in- quired into obtaining some lane near his home (it was not known if the transaction was ever com- pleted). owever, Provincial Police Inspector William Greet tracked down the mysteri- ous train stranger, a native named Sikes, working on a farm it Wicklow (north of Colborne) Sikes furnished an alibi for tht time the murder was committee and that avenue proved a deac end. There was also a stray-bulle,. theory, suggesting that the fats: shot was actually tired from bridge nearby and missing every- thing but Billy's chest — a magic bullet, if you will. The motive that received the most attention was that of an in- surance payout. Billy was report- edly insured for about S2,W0 - $1,000 from the International Telegraphers' Union and a similar amount from the Grand Trunk Benefit Fund. The benefician was his mother. Billy also had four parcels of land around the family residence and was in the process (as out- lined above) of obtaining more. It's not far-fetched to think some- one in Billy's immediate family would think to cash in on this success before Billy went off to start his own family. he eyes of suspicion cast their gaze onto the elder William Stone, who was relatively unmoved at the news of his son's death, and had a history of family abuse ... especially when he was under the influence. The most well-documented of these happened days after Billy's murder, when William was charged with assaulting one of his daughters. The elder Stone lay down in front of a freight train June 20, 1915 after being served with a subpoena to testify in front of the inquest -jury into the murder of his son. With his death, the case dried up. On June 28, the jury returned a verdict that although it was ap- parent that Billy Stone was will- fully murdered, there was not suf- ficient evidence to attach blame. The .88 -calibre Dominion handgun believed to have deliv- ered the fatal shot was never found and, as all the papers pre- dicted right from the start, the murderer of Billy Stone was never brought to trial. Residents want nuclear plant shut, but feel safe Green Party finds mixed emotions among power station neighbours in poll Pickering and Ajax residents would like to see the Pickering 'A' nuclear plant shut down permanently, but the majority feel sate living near it, accord- ing to a poll conducted by the local rid- ing association of the Green Party. The survey was conducted by the Green Research Environmental Associ- ation, and according to the party is ac- curate by plus or minus 10 per cent, 19 times out of 20. Between Dec. I I and 20, pollsters phoned at random 526 numbers in Ajax and Pickering for the survey. Seventy- six people actually answered the ques- tions, since 450 of the calls went to businesses, fax machines, people not at home or individuals who refused to par- ticipate. Of the respondents, 88 per cent replied 'yes' to the question "Would you he in favour of the permanent shutdown of the Pickering 'A' plant if an environ- mentally -friendly alternative such as wind or solar power were available'?" Four per cent said 'no' and eight per cent had 'no opinion'. To the question: "Do you oppose, support or have no opinion on the plans to restart Pickering 'A"" "', 44 per cent replied 'oppo%c', 37 pecent had 'no opinion' and 19 per cent replied 'sup- port'. When asked "Do you feel safe living relatively close to Canada's oldest com- mercial nuclear reac:tor'.", 65 per cent said 'yes', 34 per cent said 'no' and one per cent had 'no opinion'. Respondents were also asked "Would you be willing to spend slightly more for your power if you knew that it was generated in an environmentally - friendly manner'?" Eighty-three per cent said 'yes', 13 per cent replied 'no' and four per cent had 'no opinion'. , Greg Bonner of the Green Party's Ajax -Pickering -Uxbridge Constituency Association said the organization decid- ed to commission the poll in order to "offer an alternative perspective on nu- clear power" to the community. Irene Kock of Durham Nuclear Awareness suggests the 88 -per cent 'yes' response to the question on perma- nendy shutting down the 'A plant shows "a clear majority favours renew- able energy when given a choice". Ms. Kock says the seeming inconsis- tency of people wanting to see the plant closed yet 65 per cent feel safe living near it, as indicated in the poll, may sim- ply be a quirk of human nature. "We've seen that some people actu- ally prefer to ignore safety issues as a way of coping with living nearby the station;' she explains, "especially peo- ple who are within eyesight of it on a day-to-day basis" Meanwhile, the Green Party will hold an information meeting Wednes- day, March I, at the Pickering Recre- ation Complex. We're at shouston@durham.net PUBLIC MEETING ON WATER SUPPLY PROJECT THAT IMPACTS PICKERING The Region of York is currently undertaking an Environmental Assessment (EA) to develop a new Water Supply to support future growth as approved in its Official Plan. As part of this study, alternative locations for a raw water intake, raw water pumping station. water treatment plant. and transmission water mains are being investigated in Pickering (see map for alternatives under consideration). This study is being conducted by York Region in accordance with the approval requirements of the Environmental Assessment Act. At the completion of the study. York Region will formally submit an Environmental Assessment Report to the Minister of the Environment for review and approval under the Environmental Assessment Act. The City of Pickering does not support this project but it is tracking progress through an EA Working Group and would seek to negotiate a Community Benefits Agreement addressing benefits and impacts of the project to the City in the event that the project proceeds. Public Information Centres were held in Pickering by York Region in September/October 1999 followed by Workshops in November 1 399. The purpose of these consultation activities was to obtain input on the alternatives under consideration, local environmental conditions, and evaluation criteria. As a result of concerns raised by members of the public at the November 1999 Workshop, an additional Public Meeting has been arranged. The purpose of this meeting is to: present additional details on the rationale for the study area boundaries; compare the Whites/Rosebank Road Corridor to corridors in the Brock Road and Lakendge Road areas: and provide more details regarding the potential construction and operational impacts of the alternatives. This meeting will be structured as a presentation followed by a question and answer period. The meeting will be held at: Dunbarton High School - Cafeteria 655 Sheppard Avenue, Pickering Wednesday, February 16, 2000 7:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. During the week following this Public Meeting, a workshop will be held. The purpose of the Workshop is to discuss the Whites/Rosebank Road Corridor siting and routing alternatives considered in the EA and possible refinements to them, obtain additional information from local residents based on community environmental knowledge, and discuss evaluation process and criteria. You will be able to sign-up for this workshop at the Public Meeting. If you are unable to attend the Public Meeting but are interested in attending the workshop, please contact one of the Project Team representatives noted below. l000 . .0 j0 "b i _ Township of Uxbridge '.awn of- Whit KcF St+ouffville r o •- tip, % f . ,,.•., . ' ; E i t _4 Town of _...X ........... That is, without open-heart surgery. Born on October 2, 1988, Jana Healy was diagnosed with having a hole between her first and second ventricle, causing her heart to work inefficiently. Her parents were told the optimal time to operate would be at age 5. During this time Jana was very weak and open to infection. Her ener- gy level in play activities was very low. She required constant care from her mother Janet. "it was a difficult time, we're luckv we had the support of our fam- ily, friends in the community, and Dr. Norman Saunders (Jana's pediatri- cian). We couldn't have done it with- out them," said Mr. Healy. Jana's parents said they were reassured that the procedure had a very high success rate, but they are still extremely concerned. Jana had her operation in June 1993. Her par- ents, and aunt, Reverend Elizabeth Macdonald, anxiously awaited the outcome. Dr. Tressler, and a team of doctors from Sick Kids Hospital, per- formed the four hours of open-heart surgery. It was a success, and Jana can expect to live to a ripe old age,. Three days after the procedure, Jana was allowed to go home. She recovered within six months. Jana is now able to fully enjoy her life. She loves to ski, swim, and dance. A new 'Thyroid Assessment Questionnaire (TAQ)' is available which makes the right diagnosis of thyroid function in 74 per cent of cases. The TAQ helps to de- termine whether you have a normal, low or high functioning thyroid. The Thyroid Association of Canada developed the TAQ along with the help of many professionals. It's already proven to be a useful tool for doctors and patients to pinpoint thyroid disease. y The Doctor Game W. Gifford -Jones M.D. It's estimated 15 million North Americans have thyroid disease. And many people do not know it_ If left un- treated an abnormally functioning thy- roid can lead to serious health problems such as cardiovascular disease, osteo- porosis, anxiety and depression. The thyroid is a tiny, butterfly - shaped gland weighing one ounce locat- ed in front of the windpipe. It's purpose is to extract iodine from blood to manu- facture two thyroid hormones. During the course of a year the thyroid pro- duces only a teaspoonful of hormones. But these hormones have a major effect on many organs. Thyroxin, the main thyroid hor- mone, acts like the accelerator of a car. Too much thyroxin causes 'hyperthy- roidism; a speeding up of the body's metabolism. This results in palpitations, a rapid heart rate, agitation, difficulty tolerating heat, hand tremor and other problems. Too little thyroxin precipi- tates 'hypothyroidism; a slowing down of the accelerator. In this case a lack of thyroxin triggers a decreased rate of oxygen consumption and lessened ener- gy production. Patients complain of fa- tigue, poor concentration, weak mus- cles, dry skin, unexplained weight gain, difficulty tolerating cold and infrequent bowel movements. Thyroid disease often goes undiag- nosed because its symptoms mimic many other illnesses. Diagnosis may be apparent only after several symptoms of the disease appear. Hypothyroidism is the more common disorder and can occur at any time. But it is more com- mon after 50 years of age. And it strikes women five to 10 times more often than men. Some cases of hypothyroidism occur after thyroid surgery to treat an overac- tive thyroid. Or following treatment of radioactive iodine for the same purpose. But the majority of cases of hy- pothyroidism are due to what's known as "Hashimoto's thyroiditis." It's an au- toimmune disorder in which the body's immune system makes a grave error. In this case the body's immune sys- tem foolishly attacks its own thyroid gland. This causes an inflammatory process that may progressively destroy the thyroid. The Thyroid Questionnaire tends to pinpont the diagnosis. But the gold stan- dard for diagnosing either an over- active or underactive thyroid is the TSH test (thyroid stimulating hor- mone). This hormone is produced by the pituitary gland. A low TSH indicates an overactive gland. A high TSH means the pituitary gland is producing increased amounts of TSH. Synthroid, a synthetic form of the natural hormone, is prescribed by doctors for hypothyroidism. It . 6 , zoao the thyroid quiz? steps on the body's accelerator in- creasing the ability to fight fatigue, hair loss, chills in warm rooms, constipation and muscle cramps. Many readers may be thinking, "I need this hormone to speed up my metabolism to lose weight" Unfortunately, hypothyroidism is rarely associated with this com- mon problem. Nor will the majori- ty of patients with depression be helped by its use. Erin Rynberk, 13, a member of the Ajax Rising Stars Figure Skating Club, won gold medals in the level 4 solo freeskatc and level I dance events at the 2000 Canadian Special Olympics Winter Games at the Ottawa Civic Centre. Her gold -medal performances may earn the developmentally delayed teen a place on the Canadian team which will travel to Anchor- age, Alaska to compete in the World Special Olympics in February, 2001. "Since she won gold in two events, there is a really good chance she will be picked to be on Canada's world team going to Anchorage;" reports Nancy Cranswick, Rynberk's Rising Stars coach who accompanied the youngster to Ottawa. But, she says, the Canadian Special Olympics world team won't likely be an- nounced until spring. At the Canadian championships, Cran- swick reports, Rynberk overcame some jitters to put together her winning performances. ..She was a little bit nervous;' notes Cran- swick, especially since her star pupil was making her first appearance at the nationals. "It took a bit to calm her down, but 1 was very, very pleased with the way she skated" Rynberk's freeskate program was not com- pletely clean, notes Cranswick, as she fell on her lutz jump — a part of her routine which had been giving her troubl-2 in practice. but Erin Rynberk, right, who was joined by coach Nancy Cranswick, left, at the na- tionals, won two gold medals while repre- senting Ontario at the 2000 Canadian Special Olympics Winter Games in Ot- tawa last week. which she nailed to eam gold at the regional event in Hamilton last month. She wanted so much to do well" While warming up for her dance routine, Rynberk learned she had captured the gold medal in her previous event, the freeskate. The first -place effort inspired her to skate another golden routine. "It was a case of it could go either way (in the freeskate event);" says Cranswick. "But. when I noticed the scores and she had won. I told her 'Erin, you wor,', and she was just so happy. She went out and breezed through her dance routine" Cranswick says she was impressed by *c quality of the more than 540 athletes who took part in the figure skatinb events. 'The calibre of the skating really is going up. It's improved to the point where it's really cumpetitivc " At the Ontario Special Olympics Regional Competition in Hamilton last month, Rynbcrk won gold in the ladies' level 5 event and silver in the ladies' level I solo dance. Last February at the Ontario Special Olympics Winter Games in Timmins, she won the gold medal to level I dance and a bronze in level 4 freeskate.
