"I did something wrong:' The registered nurse, who under a court order can only be identified by the initials P.S., told Judge Norman Edmondson he performed the exam on the patient at Ajax/Pickcring Gener- al Hospital after she complained of stomach cramps. She had a history of ovarian cysts. "I wanted to find out if there was a problem... I didn't think about it before I did it. She com- plained about pains and cysts and I thought, 'That's easy. I can find out very quickly and tell the doctor about it,"' P.S. testified. During questioning by his lawyer Todd Ducharme, the nurse admitted attempting to cover up the exam by not record- ing it in the girl's medical chart. "I went back to the nursing station and thought... 'I did something wrong'," the 36 -year- old explained. "I realized I did something out of my scope... I was afraid the hospital would find out that I'm not supposed to do thisex- amination and they would disci- pline me. Durham Regional Police said a sting operation was conducted in response to advertisements which appeared recently in local newspapers. The ads stated Executive Spa, an agency servicing the Oshawa -Whitby area, was looking to hire "beautiful women to work as massage attendants, escorts and model/actresses;' who could easily earn $3,000 weekly. The notice said interested applicants ,'must be open-minded" and provided a Whitby telephone number. Sergeant Jim Grimiey said under- cover female officers posing as job- seekers called the number and arranged separate meetings with a man at a Whit- by doughnut shop. He said they were offered employ- ment opportunities which involved pro- viding "sexual favours" for a soon -to - be -opened escort agency and massage parlour. "The undercover officers were ad- vised of plans to open an (Internet) Web site and porn studio, and the prices for sexual favours were discussed;" Sgt. Grimley said. P.S. said he first performed a gen- eral physical examination and then asked her if she wanted him to per- form an internal exam, telling her "it's your choice:" There is no dispute the girl con- sented to the exam. However, it is prosecutor Janice Smith's position that her consent was obtained by fraud. since P.S. did not disclose to the patient that. as a nurse, he did not have the medical authority to perform such an invasive procedure. Earlier in the trial the teenager told court the exam "didn't feel like the previous internal examinations I've had" She said the stretcher wasn't equipped with stirrups and P.S. did not possess any medical instruments. P.S. was initially suspended with out pay after he was charged, but was fired by the hospital last November. He also worked at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, where he re- mains suspended without pay, court heard. He is being sued by the girl and her mother for $250,000. After the Crown completed its ev- idence last August, the defence filed a motion to have the charges against P.S. dismissed. They listened so well that, after a two- day retreat earlier this week in Orillia, councillors came up with a unanimous position on regional and municipal gov- ernance. In brief that position would involve a stripped -down regional council with far fewer councillors and a more limited mandate. Council would act as a co-or- dinating services board with responsi- bility for the delivery of services like policing, welfare and social housing. At the same time, regional council- lors agreed municipal amalgamations must be explored. It's no secret the Province will not tolerate eight munici- palities continuing to exist in Durham — not when six municipalities were not allowed to continue in the old Metro Toronto. And not when amalgamations are being forced in Sudbury, Ottawa - Carleton and Hamilton -Wentworth. There's little doubt that, after this year's municipal election, amalgamations throughout the four GTA regions will be enforced. Amalgamation possibilities — Pickering -Ajax; Oshawa-Whitby- Courticc, Uxbridge- Broc k-Scugog — will be a major topic for another day. But councillors, to their credit, are fully understanding th>_»_>_>_>_»»»>__>e statin quo will not be tolerated in 2001 and beyond. Oshawa Councillor Brian Nicholson calls the retreat, "a massive break- through. In all my years on council, I've never seen a regional council come to- gether and understand the need for ab- solute change:' Whitby Mayor Marcel Brunelle ex- pected the meeting would turn out to be •'a shootout at the OK Corral. But it turned into a consultative process" Clarington Mayor Diane Hamre says, "it was worthwhile. I was very ap- prehensive about going. I wasn't sure we would accomplish a lot. But it turned out very worthwhile" Pickering Mayor Wayne Arthurs, a strong proponent of amalgamation with Ajax, says "there was an open willing- ness to explore amalgamations. Although the Durham Catholic District School Board is still studying a proposed policy on pupil transporta- tion, it would he too costly to bus stu- dents who transfer to an out -of -arca school, reports board Chairman Fran Pereira. "It's not something that we can do," the Pickering trustee says. "Transportation isn't something that's a given." A draft policy on student busing was presented to trustees for approval in November. But, it was sent back to the transportation committee for fur- ther study after Oshawa Trustee Fred Jones asked colleagues to amend the criteria used to determine a pupil's el- igibility for busing when that student transfers to an out -of -area school. At present, if a pupil chooses to at- tend a school other than their home school, that student's transportation becomes the responsibility of their parents. But, Trustee Jones argued if that pupil is eligible for busing to their home school, they should be entitled to transportation if they choose to study farther away. However, according to a staff re- port presented to trustees Monday, it would cost approximately $649,000 to provide busing to all those stu- dents. Of the 154 secondary students who attend out -of -arca schools, 130 would be eligible for transportation if they had remained at their home school. My name is Laurie Swami. I'm the Environ- ment Section Manager at Pickering Nuclear generating station. It's my job to make sure we run our station in an environmentally responsible way. But my work is more than just a job for me. My family and I live close to the station, here in the community, so I want to be sure it's a safe place to live. We're also working with the community to make the natural areas on and around the site as friendly to animal and plant life as possible — and friendly to the humans, too, for hiking and enjoying nature. Q A lot of companies talk about how they care for the environment. But are you really doing something? A Yes we are. So much so that our site has been certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC). The W HC is an international organization that works to increase the amount and quality of wildlife habitat on corporate, private and public land. Certification means that our station's wildlife management and environmental education programs have met the Council's strict standards. What have we actually done? We've helped clean up and plant vegetation in Hydro Marsh and nearby Duffins Creek Marsh, we've built nesting structures for tern and wood ducks, we've created a butterfly garden on the site, we've planted new trees and we've helped develop the Waterfront Trail — to name just some initiatives. And we're going to keep doing more because we want to apply to the W HC again in 2001 for re -certification. Q Was the community involved in winning certification? A Very much so. In all our conservation programs, we work closely with orgaroizations such as the Town of Pickering, the Frenchman's Bay Watershed Reha- bilitation Project„ the Toronto Conservation Authori- ty and local schools. Hundreds of volunteers from the community have worked alongside volunteers from the Pickering Nuclear staff to do the hard work 'involved. The only Canadians on the Sailfish women's team sparked Palm Beach At- lantic to the Florida Sun Conference cham- pionship and to the regionals and sectionals of the National Association of Intcrcolle- giate Athletics. In the NAIA sectionals, the Sailfish women were defeated by William Carey College from Mississippi 2-0, which ended a good run. Their strong rookie season gives Mitchell and Higgins plenty of optimism for the coming campaign. "We still have a lot of young players on our team:" notes Mitchell. -We'll lose two seniors to graduation who weren't starters, so we have a lot to look forward to next year. Palm Beach -Atlantic posted a stellar 11- 4 record in Florida Sun Conference play last season. The team's overall record was 1.5-4. Along the way, the Sailfish defeated formidable foes from Tampa University and Florida Southern University, both ranked in the top 10 in Division II women's soccer in the U.S. ference and All -Regional player by opposi- tion coaches. Earning starting positions with the Sail- fish was no small feat for the two. They were put through a daily regimen of prac- tices in the searing Florida heat in late Au- gust. "The training was really difficult in the beginning:' reports Mitchell. "We had two to three practices a day for the first two weeks and the heat was really bad. At first I hated the heat. I wanted it to be cold. The August heat would not change, there was no coolness in the air. But, by October, it got so nice and I loved it" The highly -competitive U.S. college game was a wake-up call to both freshmen who were surprised by the workload and commitment needed to play at that level. Mitchell says the physical play in the conference was unexpected. -It's pretty competitive and extremely rough and tough. There's more physical play there and you need more endurance. We learn a whole different strategy there and some of the rules were difficult to adapt to" Adapting to the college level was made less stressful by the fact the two have been close friends dating back many years when they played minor soccer in Pickering. ..We share a dormitory room and we've been the best of friends since II:' says Mitchell, who starred in high school with the Dunbarton Spartans who won the provincial title in 1997. Higgins, a Pine Ridge Secondary School QJ graduate who's a midfielder with Palm 510 Coronation Drive, Units 25 8 26 Beach Atlantic, earned All -Conference. SUPERVISORY STAFF REQUIREMENTS Supervisors with a minimum of 5 years experience in set-up and supervision, to be trained initially on the day shift, with the intention of supervising the afternoon shift. Require Sheet Metal Supervisor for metal fabrication and Wood Shop Supervisor for wood fabrication. Licenced Maintenance Electrician required for full-time day shift, experienced in servicing and maintaining production Imachinery and building facilities. Would also be required to provide direction for the electrical fabrication of our products. Model Maker experienced in the above products working in wood, metal, plastic, acrylic and wire. Design or Ontario College of Art background would be an asset. SKILLED & SEMI -SKILLED STAFF REQUIREMENTS FOR THE AFTERNOON SHIFT Sheet :Metal workers experienced in press brake, spot welding and metal fabrication. Woodworkers experiences in wood fabrication and cabinet making. Experience on CNC wood machining centre would be an asset. General Help required in assembly of wood, metal and plastic product. Electrical knowledge of wiring would be an asset. Acrylic Fabricator with experience in acrylic fabrication. Salaries and wage rates will depend upon skill levels and experience. With wins over Ajax, Port Perry, Os- hawa and Whitby, the Panthers have started to score and are playing solid defence. The Pickering atoms' record now stands at 9- I0 - I. In a6-2 victory over Ajax, the 'PAS' line of Phillip Pett, Matthew Antonucci and Kyle Stewart combined for 12 points. Stew- art scored two and assisted on two, and An- tonucci and Pett each had a goal and three assists.
