That's the philosophy adKot-

Durham and Scarborough who
are rc-mounting their campaign
to bring a full-service cardiac

It's been about a year since
the Cardiac Care Task Force
launched its first campaign for
the centre by circulating cards
for people to sign stating they
support full cardiac services at
Centenary. About 9.000 of the
cards were signed and present-

At an official rc-launch for

Dr. Ricci said Centenary

We can all
play Santa
May the spirit of the season
till us throughout the year
'Tis the night before Christmas. Santa's hitching up his
sleigh.
Here', hoping he brings many good things your way.
Like the spirit of the season to fill your heart every day.
The best gift of all. we'd have to say...
Just how good would it be to fecal the Christmas spirit all
yearlong:' Just imagine what that would mean in our little cor-
ner of the world, our little stop on Santa's whirlwind tour of
Christmas Eve. 1999.
Imagine there's no hunger... because we all give gencro us-
ly to food banks in Durham throughout the year. Imagine
there are no food banks... because there's no need fix thorn;
they are put out of business by politicians who get their prior-
ities right for a change.
Imagine there arc no homeless again. the people
we elect to serve us. those we employ to solve societal ills.
right a gnat wrong whereby citizens in one of the most pns-
pertus countries to the world have no shelter.
Imagine there's no hatred...becausc we all learn to get
along, to not only tolerate people of other colours and creeds
but to celebrate our diversity and embrace those who are dif-
ferent. re for we aall members of one race -- the human race.
Imagine there are no lonely people... because we volunteer
to man the phone lines of the local distress cent-. we give of
our time to pay friendly visits to an isolated shut-in. we drop
by w check on an ailing senior.
Imagine there arc no lost souls ... because we serve as Big
Brothers and Sisters to children of divorce needing positive
role models. we help out at shelters which Muse battered
women. we work for free for agencies catering err the needs of
the mentally ill.
Imagine there's no shivering... because we donate gener-
ously to the newly -launched Share the Warmth program
which pays the utility bills of poor people who'd otherwise be
evicted, because we give the clothes we no longer wear to
Goodwill or the Salvation Army for distribution to needy
adults and children.
Ah. the children. Bless them all.
Wbcn their eyes light up tomorrow morning may that be a
symbol to each and everyone of us — a beacon of you will —
to do what we can to brighten the lives of others, to make this
a better place fir strangers.
For that is the true spirit of the seamm — 'tis better to give
than to receive.
.Trimming the trash
Let's resolve to reduce waste
in the new year
When ret comes to waste management, less is more.
When it cones to the annual Waste Reduction Wcck May
ors' Challenge between Ajax and Pickering. less mean, vncuo-
ry
Puckering was the victor again this year in the annual chal-
lenge which monitors the anxxmt of waste residents to each
town rend to the dump in November.
When the final count was complete, it showed Pickenng
residents sent 20.07 kilograms of waste per person to Ikcic
Valley landfill. compared with the per -capita Ajax ural of
24.25 lukWams.
The penalty: Ajax had to fly the Town of Pickering flag
over its Town hall. Notwithstanding the irony of Pickering's
flag flying in the heart of Ajax (did anyone say amalgama-
ticrs''), it was a sweet victory for Pickering residents.
But that doesn't mean anyone failed. Ajax residents have
shown they know how to reduce. reuse and recycle. Thy have
a ht.tory of environmental awareness. This challenge only
scr%cs to slow more can be done to continue the reductio in
the amount of waste we produce and chow away.
And Pickering residents mustn't take the second victory in
the annual challenge as a sign they are doing all they can. Cer-
tainly the current four -bag -per -week trash limit in Pickering
has helped.
But with innovation, determination and political leader-
ship, the amount of trash we send to Landfill every week can
be reduced even more — and even mom consistently.
We may have made our new yeai s resolutions already. But
there is always room for improvement. Let's resolve to con-
tinue the tradition of environmental awareness in Ajax and
Pickering. Let's resolve to create and dispose of less waste.
Let's resolve to bring those numbers down in 2000.
Bring on the next challenge!

What are you doing New Year 's Eve?
Party tickets still
widely available
Despite the hype that has surr, mnd-
ed the celebration of a new millenni-
um, tickets to many special events or-
ganizcd by local restaumrnts and pubs
are -mill widely available.
Some believe that's due — at least
in part — to a variety of free events

it's just another day:' say- Tom
Theodo ru. owner of Papp- Restaurant
in Pickering.
Tltc restaurant will close on New
Year's Eve at 9 p.m., but a party in its
banyuct hall promises to go until the
wee hours of the morning.
Mr. Theodoru and ether restaurant
owner- have heard complaints from
patrons about the cost of getting a
babysitter for their children — if a
babysitter can be found at all — which
may denier them from going out.
At the Harp & Crown Pub, also in
Pickering, (tanager Bob Morgan be-
lieves "expectations have been scaled
down a bit" since talk began months
ago about marking (tic arrival of tin
year 2(X)0 In grand style.
But the historical occasion really
hasn't been garnering more attention
than previous New Year's Eve cclebra-
tions, when tickets were largely
scooped up at the last minute, restau-
rant and pub owners report.
"Every year, people tend to check
things out" before deciding where
they'll celebrate, notes Mr. Morgan,
who estimates the pub could have sold
another 100 tickets after last year's
event sold out shortly before the party.
Ajax's Second Storey owner
George Tzoumis agrees. "People are
very cautious and don't want to com-
mit, just like in outer years"
Certainly, there's something for just
about every budget. While you can at-
tend municipal festivities at minimal
or no cost, parties at pubs and restau-
rants range from about $30 to $150 per
Person -
And what you get with your ticket
also varies, with some establishments
offering everything from dinner and
Champagne to dancing and transpona-
Many are also opting for smaller
parties : t home with close friends and
family
"For all the (MKlpla) about the mil-
lennium, people seem to be going for
the party at home:' believes John
Flanagan, assistant manager at Party
City 1n Ajax. "They want to celebrate
the big hang with friends."
But even if celebrating at A house
party, it appears people want to do it 1n
style, as the sale of New Year's Eve
decorations has been "exceptional",
Mr Flanagan reports.
"All In all. they're keeping it sam-
ple. 7Tk•y're buying hats and noise
makers. People arc uneasy with the
economy and are being a little cau-
tious," notes Mr Flanagan.
Even clubs and organiratuons buy-
ing dccoratiots for panics arc "being
cautious:' he adds.
That caution may be the reason
why fewer people have tkxoked a cab
for New Year's Eve. guesses Durham
Rapid Taxi manager Tim Saunders.
"We haven't had too many book-
ings yct:' he says. "I'm not sure if peo-
ple arc just staying twme or huvcn't
decided what they're doing', though
boxokings were up about this time last
year.
"Maybe people are worried about
the Y2K (computer hug) and are just
staying home:' Mr. Saunders suggests.

Time for Ajax residents to trim their waste lines if they hope to improve for 2000 challenge
Pickering has once again won the
Mayors' Chat F ge over Ajax in a recy-
cling contest to determine which com-
*nnatity sent the least residential waste to
landfill during November.
The 87,000 Pickering residents sent
1,745.85 metric tonnes while 71,200
Ajacians discarded 1.726.62. On a per -
capita basis, that means Pickering citi-
mens each sem 20.07 kilograms of mate-
rial to the dump during the month and
Ajacians 24.25 kilograms.
As it lakes time to obtain data, 1 am
Ong to begin reporting figures regular-
ly rather than just for November. This
will give us the bigger picture and per-
haps provide more incentive for Ajax to
trim its waste.
Ajax Mayor Steve Parish declared in
council prior to Waste Reduction Week
events that Pickering wouldn't win
again. It looks like Ajax needs to host a
few composter sales and propose a hag

Students travelled to the Waterloo
area to visit the YMCA's sustainable ar-
chitectural tour led by landscape archi-
tect Charles Simon. Also included was
the inspirational lecture 'Bridging the
Gap Between Building and Nature' by
Cornelia Eahn M- lander.
The conference was held at Toronto's
prestigious Royal York Hotel where
management of Canadian Pacific Hotel
and Resort (CPH&R) have decreased
resources going to landfill by almost 70
per cent. The Royal York has imple-
mented ideas that make it energy- and
water -efficient while minimizing waste.
In 1992, the CPH&R published Ilie
Green Partnership Guide: 12 steps to
help create an environmentally -friendly
setting for our guests, ourselves and our
future'. If only every business would
make a strong commitment to reach a
70 -per cent waste reduction rate, we
would be able to reach our goal of 50
per cent waste diversion by the year
2000 as planned by the province instead
of a new target date of 2007.

Looking for a unique idea? Check
out Zoo Doo — a perfect example of a
gift that "closes the loop". Zoos are be-
coming known for their natural fertilizer
called Zoo Doo which is marketed ani-
mal dung. There are large Zoo Doo or-
naments that will last several years in a
garden. As well, Zoo Doo has been
made into tree ornaments. 'lite little ani-
mal shapes will last forever when dry,
but dissolve very quickly when watered.
When you aro ready for clephantine
growth in your garden, place in the soil
next to your favourite plants or in a
house plant. As the plants get watered,
Zoo Doo slowly provides a natural com-
post. It's certainly not your ordinary an-
imal cracker but it is a good conversa-
tion piece.

Indian Yeato Ajax author
D'Arcy Jenish book proves `First Nations were once a proud, strong, free people'
BY AL RIVF.7T
.Stuff Fditor
AJAX — The writing of his
latest book allowed an Ajax au-
thor to take a historical pilgrim-
age back to his birthplace.
Ajax writer D'Arcy Jenish re-
turned to his prairie Hots for his
latest historical
non-fiction work
entitled 'Indian
Pall: The Last
Creat Days of the
Plains Crec and
the Blackfoot
Confederacy',
published by Pen-
guin Books Cana-
da earlier this
year.
"I was raised
in Saskatchewan
and Ialways
wanted to write a
big historical saga.
i wanted to do
something on Indi-
ans;' reports Mr. Jenish, a senior
writer at Maclean's magazine. -It
was thrilling to write a history of
my homeland in southern
Saskatchewan "
By delving into the history of
the prairies, specifically the great
Crec and Blackfoot leaders who
guided their people on the Cana-
dian plains prior to the arrival of
white settlers in the mid- to late
1800%, Mr. Jenish discovered the
history of the prairies was any-
thing but ho-hum.
But. it wasn't exactly the
send -in -the ca%air% 11ciloJ which
accompanied dor up of
the American w% .
-It's not i1w ' A the
U.S. It's a different history in
many ways, but every bit as dra-
matic and heartrending and, in
some cases. the characters are
every bit as magnificent as those
in the U.S says Mr. Jenish. "It
was not about Custer and the
cavalry and Leat type of madness.
It was abut de-
privation, starva-
non and disaster
that happened
almost quietly.
" I wanted to
show that the
First Nations
were once a
proud, strong,
tree people. 1
didn't want to
portray them in
a syrupy, bleed-
ing-heart way,
but to present
them as they
were and to
present their
strengths and attributes, which
were many, '
'Indian Fall' is a comprehen-
sive study of four of the great In-
dian chiefs of that era — Big
Bear. Poundmaker, Crowfoot
and Piap t. As Mr. Jenish
learned, they were extremely in-
teresting characters and fine
leaden.
"Mere was real heroic leader-
ship in the face of an underlying
tragic story. You see the people
rise to the occasion with courage
and dignity in the face of horren-
dous adversity. It's not the %rune
old story about us bring bad to

popular belief that the settlement
of the west was a bloodless affair
with the Indians acquiescing to
the wishes of the Macdonald
government.
By 1870, he notes. a number
,tf foctors had put the Indian
'•:rnd, into a weakened state.
i hcv were whacked by
handed it to us. That is complete-
ly false.
-For First Nations, it was a
horrible existence, made even
more horrible because they did-
n't have any fight left in them.
They were always prepared to
fight to defend their land but sud-
denly they couldn't fight:'
Mr. Jenish says the Macdon-
ald government put it in blunt
terms to the plains Indians in the
late 1800%: Either go along with
the wishes of the government or
starve.
"The Macdonald govern-
ment. when push came to shove,
used every bit of force they had
to use to force these people into
submission and food was the
weapon.
Mr. Jenish started research for
his book in May of 1997 and
took almost two full years to fin-
ish the project.
He and his son Jesse spent the
summer of 1998 touring the
many landmarks and historic
sites for research purposes. He
notes that the first three books
borrowed for research came
from the Ajax Public Library,
which was a valuable source of
material for his work.
"It had some of the standard
works, but it also had some quite
obscure titles on Western Cana-
dian history. There were titles by
aboriginal writers you wouldn't
normally expect to find every
day;' says Mr. Jenish. " I can't
say enough about the collection
they have. The Canadiana is ex-
tremely strong:'
Mr. Jenish hopes to pen an-
other historical work about the
prairies and is assembling a
number of ideas for his next pro-
ject.
"I'd like to pursue more his-
torical writing and go further into
dw history of that part of the
world where 1 was born and
raised. I would like to delve a lit -
tic deeper into that"

AJAX — Pictures, plaques and
other memorabilia from the Second
World War's Battle of the River Plate
and its aftermath are now on display
at the Ajax Community Centre.
Many of the memorabilia came
from veterans of the HMS Ajax and
her sister ships, who marked the 60111
anniversary of the battle on a visit to
Ajax in October.
Now, the mementoes and tributes
given to the Town can be viewed in
new display cases at the community
centre on Centennial Road.
"It's great to have a proper display
case in a central, well -visited loca-
tion," Brenda Kriz, the Town's
archivist, says in a news release. "It's
so much better to have examples
from our history on display, rather
than in the Town hall's basement"
The mementoes are to be on dis-
play for at least six months. Other
historical artifacts about the HMS
Ajax and Battle of the River Plate
will remain on display at Town hall
outside council chambers.
Ajax was named after the Royal
Navy warship. The name was select-
ed in 1941, after the rural area east of
Toronto had become home to De-
fence Industries Limited (DIL), a
munitions plant.
As homes were constructed
around the plant, a post office was
needed and the name Ajax was cho-
sen.
"The 1939 victory of the HMS
Ajax and her sister ships the HMS
Exeter and HMNZS Achilles made
the name an appropriate honour," the
news release from the Town notes.
The Town, which was incorporat-
ed in 1954, adopted the tradition of
naming streets for crew members of
the ships and notable DIL staff.
