The inspection also found 341 such hazards at 31 inspected playgrounds in Ajax, 89 at 10 inspected in Whitby, 139 at 10 in Oshawa and 108 at I 1 in Clarington. "These are the things they're referring to as critical hazards;" says Mr. Buntsma. " I know what the health de- partment did was well-inten- tioned. But things might not be as unsafe as some might think:' He's particularly puzzled by the higher number of crit- ical playground hazards found in Pickering compared to the rest of Durham. "We have the same play- ground apparatus in Picker- ing that has been purchased by every municipality in On- tario. I don't understand it at all." The inspections in Picker- ing were carried out between May and October and the Town received a letter ex- plaining the results of each. Mr. Buntsma says when a let- ter was received crews were sent out to correct every problem identified that could be fixed within the depart- ment budget for the year. A list of things that couldn't be corrected this %ear has been drawn up. "By January I will have a full report from my staff." There is currently close to $400,000 in the Town's planned 2000 budget for playground equipment re- placement and renovations. But, Mr. Buntsma expects the changes required to bring all Pickering's playgrounds up to the new standard would cost more than that. He notes the CSA is a pri- vately -funded organization and not a government or reg- ulatory agency. and that it is not mandatory for municipal parks to meet its standards. Still, he adds, "We are going to do everything we can to bring all our equip- ment into compliance. We need an action plan and that's what my staff are putting to- gether right now:' Ward I Regional Council- lor Maurice Brenner, who raised the issue at Town Council last week, wants the Town to act quickly on it. A mass will be held at St. Bernadette Catholic Church at Harwood Avenue and Bayly Street in Ajax at 1 I a.m. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at McEach- nic Funeral Home (428-8488), 28 Old Kingston Rd. in Pickering Village. Dr. Henderson died last Wednesday, just days after he celebrated his 60th birthday. He and a friend agreed to meet their wives later in the day because they wanted to ski some uncharted territory. The father of four and grandfather of seven reportedly expressed a desire to rest, laid down his head and never awoke. The cause of death has not yet been determined. It is estimated the England native de- livered some 10,000 babies after com- ing to Ajax with his wife Penny in 1970, where he joined the Ajax -Pickering Banged -up `Bang Bang' bandit linked to area heists BY STEPHEN SHAW Staff Writer Police de -o ribed the elusive 'Bang Bang Bandit; believed responsible for a two-year bank -heist spree across Greater Toronto, as a professional. But as far as Louis Lalande is con- cerned the suspected serial robber is nothing but an "amateur." Durham Regional Police say the gunman captured by a group of Good Samaritans led by the 64 -year-old Newcastle resident during a botched holdup last Tuesday in Oshawa has now been linked to 25 bank robberies dating back to March 1997. Mr. Lalande, a Knights of Colum- bus service club volunteer, was selling tickets for a charity raffle at a booth in front of the Bank of Montreal, at the East Mall on King Street East. After hearing gunfire, the retired construc- tion worker grabbed an aluminum folding chair from his stand, entered the bank, crept up behind the bandit and whacked him over the head sever - 'al times, knocking the gun from his hand. The dazed robber was then jumped by three men, tackled to the ,ground and held for police. Police recovered a starter's pistol. They began reviewing seized bank surveillance videotapes from several .-.''unsolved robberies in the region, at- tributed to the Bang Bang Bandit. They quickly contacted colleagues from the Toronto and York police forces and began comparing notes. Police say they were able to link the suspect to eight heists in Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa, 1.4 in Toronto and three in York Region. At the end of some of the bandit's holdup notes, the warning "bang, bang" would be scrawled. Miguel Andrew Thomas, 22, of Toronto, has been charged with 25 counts of robbery and three counts of using a firearm in the commission of an offence. s, . N E W S AD V E EDITORIAL United front needed to head off separatists Partisan politics not useful in Quebec question When it comes to the Quebec issue at least, it seems Prime Minister Jean Chretien can't win for losing. At least until now. Ripped in his own home province for being a key signatory when the Consti- tution was approved in 1982 - it still hasn't been ratified by Quebec - Mr. Chretien has spent nearly 20 years de- fending himself as a proud francophone Quebecer who also happens to be a staunch federalist. That can be a diffi- cult sell in the coffee shops of Shawini- gan, Quebec City and east -end Montre- al. In any event, Mr. Chretien was pum- melled by the opposition parties after doing little to battle the Parti Quebecois and Lucien Bouchard during the 1995 referendum. That vote was won by the federalist cause by a whisker. It's likely the PM vowed then and there to never allow it to be so close again while he was Canada's leader. Now, more than four years after that too -close -for -comfort vote, Mr. Chre- tien has come out with a hardline stance. He has told Premier Bouchard and all separatists that Canada will decide what constitutes a majority vote for separa- tion and what is an acceptable question in a referendum. It's what we've needed to hear since PQ founder Rene Levesque was first elected Quebec premier back in 1976. Separatists have hijacked the referen- dum question, the terms for separation and all other Quebec issues for nearly a quarter -of -a -century. Despite having Quebecers as Prime Minister for nearly that same period of time and many Quebecers in key cabi- net posts, the fells have always played catch-up. We've often seen our prime ministers, be they Pierre Trudeau, Brian Mulroney or Mr. Chretien, reacting too late to moves made by Mr. Levesque, Jacques Parizeau or Mr. Bouchard. It's high time Canada called the shots. It was comforting to see Reform and Official Opposition leader Preston Manning back the PM's plan after ini- tially opposing it. Now, perhaps Tory leader Joe Clark and NDP leader Alexa McDonough as well as Quebec Liberal leader Jean Charest should get on the unity train. The next referendum won't be held for several years yet but, this time at least, we'll need all federalist forces united to stop separatism for the long-term future. Taking this at its simplest form, try to imagine the $165 million being spent on research for projects such as finding an alternative to fossil, fuels or building homeless shelters and staffing them. Better yet, pull together some of the greatest scientific minds in the world, lay out the $165 million in front of them. Give them a chance to spend it on researching a cure for diseases such as cancer, lung disease or maybe the Ebola virus. Keep the home fires from burning Novelty Christmas candles a holiday hazard: firefighters BY NbI RIAN L 7AKAC'S Staff Writer They may tie cute and festive, but many Christmas novelty candles available in shapes such a. Santis, snowmen, teddy bears andIit- ile houses pone: a serious fire hazard and should only be used with great care, warns the Pickering Fire Department. "It' you're going to light one, make sure you have it supervised at all times;' says In- spector Grant Cornish, a fire prevention offi- cer with the department. The problem is the 'whipped wax' the novelty candles are often made of. It melts more quickly than the wick burns and the whole candle melts down and hums unpre- dictably. The result can be a long or folded - over wick with a flame up to five inches high, or a candle that topples over because it's melt- ed unevenly. Of particular concern is the fact the novel- ty candles are often attractive to children. "Candles 5ke this you don't want to have in a child's room," says Insp. Cornish. Neither should they be placed on a low table or any place they can be knocked over by rambunc- tious children or pets, or on a fireplace mantel where they can easily fall off or where the high flame can reach decorations or a picture on the wall above. And they should never be left burning without an adult in the room. As well, the wick should be cut down to no more than half an inch before they're lit. It's even better just to use the candles as ornaments and not light them at all, he notes, and not leave them where children will be tempted to light them. You can usually tell if a candle is made of whipped wax by the weight, according to Insp. Cornish. It's usually much lighter than a regular candle of the same size. Of course novelty candles aren't the only holiday fire hazard. As firefighters are only too aware, the season's combination of can- dles, lights, dry Christmas trees, lit fireplaces, partying and excessive alcohol consumption can be deadly. "For a number of years, in the '80:; espe- cially, we used to get a lot of bad Christmas fires;' say. Pickering d.:puty fire chief Bill Douelas. "But the last few years have been re- ally go i. I think people are becoming more fire safety -conscious:' It's also important for people not to be - conic complacent about tires even though they have smoke detectors to help them get out of a burning house. "It's not only the danger that somebody could get burnt or hurt;" note. Dep. Chief Douglas, explaining even a fire that gets put out relatively quickly can cause lots of smoke and heat damage. Repairs and clean-up can keep a family out of their home for a long time, and irreplaceable possessions such as photos can be lost. Here are some Christmas fire safety tips from the Pickering Fire Department: • Make sure your Christmas tree is well -wa- tered each day, and remember to cut a slice off the bottom of the trunk immediately be- fore putting it up to ensure it will be able to absorb the water. Place the tree in a good stand that can hold plenty of water. - Keep all candles away from trees, curtains, clothing and anything else flammable, and out of reach of children and pets. Don't leave candles unattended and always place them in a proper holder. • Throw out old, frayed or substandard tree lights. • Avoid the use of extension cords as much as possible, especially under carpets, since they have a tendency to break down over time. If the plug of a cord is warm, don't use it, and never use one that's been repaired. • Don't leave fireplaces unattended and al- ways use a screen. Don't throw wrapping paper into a fireplace because it contains ma- terials that encourage the build-up of creosote in the chimney, which can eventually lead to a chimney fire. Sparks from the burning paper can also cause a fire. • Have a working fire extinguisher. • Make sure smoke alarms are tested and in good working order. Members of the Picker- ing Panthers Ontario Provincial Junior 'A' Hock- ey League team and the Pickering Panther Super Seven tyke select squad will offer their help to the Ajax - Pickering Salvation Army's annual Christmas Assis- tance Program. Each team will sponsor needy families in the area for the holiday season. Todd Finlayson, head coach of the Super Seven team, says the decision to get involved with Sally Ann this Christmas was a joint one by the coaches, players and parents. "Our coaching staff and parents believe that a play- er's involvement on any sports team should provide children with enrichment well beyond learning how to play the game at a higher level:' notes Finlayson. "We wanted these young players to stop and reflect on their good fortune as well as to learn at an early age that it is critical to give back to the community that provides us with so much." Panthers' president and owner Michael Boyer agrees sports teams should participate in worthwhile community projects. In ad- dition to being the lead sponsor of Junior 'A' hock- ey in Pickering. Boyer gets the Panthers' players in- volved in a variety of com- munity events. "This is just one of the many events the Junior 'A' team has planned for the players over the course of the year:' Boyer explains. "Other events includb the annual Christmas dinner and toy drive for less fortu- nate families, visits to the Ajax -Pickering Health Cen- tre on a periodic basis throughout the year and several outings involving the Pickering Hockey Asso- ciation." Due to early -season in- juries, it was difficult for coaches Randy Prebble and Herb Underhill to ice a con- sistent line-up. But now with mended players back in the fold the team has started to come together. The Panthers finished off' a week when they played three games in three nights by posting a 4-3 victory in Belleville. Goaltenders David Tomei and James Molony played a strong game. Goal scorers were Chad Gaudet, Gus Mat- tachioni, Brandon Crummey and Codey Pollard. Assists went to Daniel Prebble and James McCardle with two each, Pollard and Jordan Guarrasi with one apiece. The Panthers outskated and outhit the larger Ajax Knights atoms en route to a 10-4 win. Goalie Tomei kept the game close in the first period before the Panthers finally broke loose for their biggest offensive outburst of the sea- son. Scoring were McCardle with three. Christopher Dixon and Gaudet with two each, Pollard. Mattachioni and Mark Gertsakis with one apiece. Assisting were Preb- ble and Jordan Pollari with two apiece, Dixon, Crum- mey, Pollard, Gertsakis, Nathaniel Underhill, William Mitchell and Stephen Boyle with one each. The Panthers started the modest winning streak with an impressive 2-0 win over Ajax. Pickering turned in a strong defensive effort in helping James Molony pre- serve the shutout. Goals were netted by Gaudet and Under- hill, assisted by Boyle and Prebble. Pickering's regular -sea- son record stands at 5-5-2. The Panthers are coached by Randy Prebble and Herb Underhill.
