Head-on crash claims life
This is all that remains of a car which collided
head-on with a dump truck carr-ying a load of
gravel on Lakendge Road yesterday moming.
Durham Regional Police said the accident hap-
pened at approximately 10:50 a.m- when a 1986
Dodge Aries travelling norihbound on Lakeridge

nham of Kitchener, escaped

No charges will be laid as
a result of' the incident, says
Const. Hinds.
The freight train conduc-
tor averted worse tragedy by
his actions when he saw the
truck, says the CN
spokesman.
"Everything happened
pretty quickly," related Mr.
Thomson. The freight train
conductor "saw the truck w&s
stalled on the level crossing
and a decision was made to
put the train into an emcr-
gcncy stop. He also put a
broadcast out warning the
oncoming VIA train, which
also went into an emergency
stop as a result."
Freight trains regularly
travel at about 60/mph and
pas%cnger trains at ](X)/mph,
said Mr. Thomson. "it was
the fast action of the crews
which allowed the trains to
slow enough to prevent
greater injufies to the passen-
gcrs.
The passenger train was
able to slow to 60/mph,
thanks to the broadcast from
the freight train, says Clar-
ington Fire Captain Tim Cal-
houn, the incident comman-
der at the sccne.
Clafington's fire depart-
irrient was called to the --Acne
at 6:53 p.m.
"Normally, our top priori-
ty is rc%Luc, says Capt. Cal-
houn. But, when firefightcrs
arrived on scene, -conduc-
tors, had people off the Wain
and they were walking down
the track toward Holt Road."
A conductor was using a pas-
scnger manifest to ensure all

Getting ready
for a disaster
We must be prepared
for a nuclear plant accident
It's a difficult and dreadful task to
prepare for something catastrophic, such
as our own death. But. many people are
indeed able to plan their own funeral
and burial. For death is one of life's in-
evitabilities.
Less inevitable is a disaster at the
nearby Pickering nuclear station. We'd
like to believe a major accident at the
power plant on our door -step is unthink-
able. But, then again the Titanic was
supposed to be unsinkable.
So we must be prepared for a cata-
strophe at the local nuclear station and
pray that an emergency plan will never
be needed.
If a major power plant accident is un-
thinkable, so t(x) is the current lack of an
adequate emergency plan to deal with
such a disaster.

(EMO) of Ontano and Ontario Power
Generation (OPG) have only just recent-
ly agreed to consider improving that
plan. 'Ilwy'vc finally caved in to the

As disturbing as the proposed alcrt-

is, we believe it's even more troubling
that the emergency plan still doesn't
spell out just how Pickering nuclear sta-
tion neighbours would be advised of an
accident. The EMO is leaning toward a
computerized system whereby people
living in the shadow of a power plant
would be alerted by an automated tcle-
phone call. But, sound alerts such as
sirens haven't been completely ruled
out.

uing on his way to school," he said.
He was confronted by the group at
which time one of the youths pushed
the victim to the ground and another
pulled out what appeared to be a hand-
gun.
"'Ibc second male held the gun to
the boy's head and warned him not to
tell anyone about what he had just seen
(near the building)," the officer said.
The 17 -year-old returned to school
and reported the incident to a guidance
counsellor, who called police.
Based on the teen's description, the
weapon is believed to have been a pci-
let gun, Sgt. Grimley said.
The first suspect was described as a

17 -year-old male, black, about 5 -foot -
6, wearing black clothes. The one with
the gun was described as a white male,
18, 6 -foot -1 and wearing a red jacket.
A third person was a white female
wearing a pink shirt and white pants.

Catholic board's

next school budget

If all goes according to
plan, the Durham separate
school board's budget for
the 2000-2001 school year
will be finalized before
classes end in June,
trustees heard Monday.
Durham Catholic Dis-
trict School Board superin-
tendent of business David
Visser outlined the budget
schedule for the next
school year in a report to
trustees Monday.
"it is anticipated that
the budget will he ap-
proved prior to the end of'
June 2000." Mr. Visser re-
ported.
"This prcscnts the con-
tinued realization of the
goal to approve budgets
prior to the start of the
budget year, rather than in
previous years when the
budget was approved sev-
eral months into the fiscal
year.
However, Mr. Visser
noted the board's schedule
"is dependent upon the rc-
ccipt of' the necessary fi-
nancial information from
the Ministry of Educa-
tion."
Mr. Visser also remind-
ed trustees there have been
"vast" changes to the way
school boards are funded
in the past few years.
"These changes have in-
fluenced the entire opera-
tions of the board, includ-
ing finance," he noted. "As
a result of all the finance
changes, a proposal is
being prepared for an off-
site finance seminar ... to re-
view the changes along
with the implications of
the change."
The board is also plan-
ning a presentation to
school councils in Febru-
ary 2000 to provide an

As you complete work along one stretch of gutter, check to
see that it is firmly attached to the house. Straighten or replace

way around the house and clean the entire system of gutters and
downspouts.

and doesn't leak out, flush the system with your garden hose.
Caulk any leaks with a good quality acrylic lWx caulk.

Reno, which bills itself as "The
Biggest Little City in the World"
is also the friendliest little city in
the world.
Unlike Las Vegas where you
need transport to cruise around,
downtown Reno is compact
enough to allow you to cover it all
in a leisurely stroll. While Las
Vegas dazzles you with its
razzmatazz glitz, Reno beguiles
you with its folksy charm. And,
unlike Vegas where we are noncn-
tities among millions of visitors
from all o-.er the world, Reno
knows and loves us Canadians!
Smaller than Las Vegas as it
may be, Reno doesn't lack glitter.
The Flamingo Hilton, Atlantis,
Pepper Mill. Eldorado and Silver
Legacy, among others, are all
world-class hotel -casinos, which
host big -name Broadway enter-
tainers.
The city also has a lively cal-
cndar of events: parades, rodeos
and festivals. And last, but far
from least, Reno, in combination
with nearby Lake Tahoe, boasts a
total of 51 golf courses — a dif-
ferent one for almost each week
of the year!
Reno's history of gaming is
pan of the psyche of the Old
West, where risk-taking was part
of everyday life for rugged
prospectors looking for gold and
silver in 'them thar hills' — a
chancy business if ever there was
one.
However, it wasn't until the
1930s, when gaming was legal-
ized in Nevada, that the Smith
family and Bill Harrah arrived in
Reno to set up the city's first "le-
gitimate" casinos. The rest, as
they say, is history.
Aside from gaming. however,
Reno has a wealth of other attrac-
tions, Browse through the Nation-
al Automobile Museum with its
astounding collection of antique,
vintage and classic cars — sleek
little beauties. many of them part
of Harrah's private collection. Not
far away is the enormous Nation-
al Bowling Stadium, which hosts
the annual Women's Bowling
Championships.

The Wilbur May Center is
worth at least an afternoon. At this
ranch -style building, which incor-
porates a museum, arboretum and
botanical garden, visitors are
treated to a display of fabulous
objets d'art, including a collection
of rare Chinese pottery. Enjoy the
tranquillity of the rose garden, or
the rare opportunity of viewing a
pair of ancient plants whose roots
run as far back as the age of di-
nosaurs.
Historic Virginia City is a 45 -
minute bus -ride away. The road
begins to hairpin past precipitous
gorges as it makes its ascent
through the Virginia hills. These
ochre -coloured, Ponderosa pinc-
stubbled crags are where it all
began 150 years ago, with the dis-
covery of gold and silver ore and
the opening of the Comstock
mines.
In its heyday during the second
half of the last century, Virginia
City swarmed with miners,
prospectors, gamblers, gunfight -

their claims and brawled over
whiskey and women with equal
fervour. Bordellos thrived.
Dancers and vaudeville artists
performed to rowdy audiences.
And Piper's Opera House, which
is still open to visitors, lent a
touch of class to the rough facade
of the city.
The main street resembles the
set of an old Western movie.
Boardwalks flank balcony -fronted
buildings dating from the turn of
the century (or earlier) and old-
style saloons. One half expects to
see a stagecoach rumbling down
the street, or a bunch of cowpokes
come hootin'n'hollerin' around
the corner to tie up their horses in
front of the "Bucket of Blood" sa-
loon.
The street is lined with gift
shops, ice cream parlours, art gal-
leries and antique stores. Here too
is the Mark Twain Museum of
Memories which celebrates Vir-
ginia City's most famous citizen
who once worked in the offices of
The Territorial Enterprise news-
paper. The Delta Saloon, further
up the street, is lively with the
whir of slot -machines, and com-
ments about the infamous Suicide
Table — whereupon hangs a tale!
Several of Virginia City's more
intriguing historical sites are off
the main drag and it's worth set-
ting aside a whole day to explore
them.
A tour of the mines, perhaps,
or a ride on the Virginia and Truc-
kee Railroad steam train.
The old churches, richly fur-
nished mansions and museums
are redolent with moments of past
glory — while the headstones in
the Silver Terrace Cemeteries,
(grouped into areas for Catholics,
Freemasons, Chinese and Jews)
bear eloquent testimony to the
lives and times of the city's larg-
er -than -life scallywags and he-
roes.

PICKERING — The Claremont
Public School intermediate girls' vol-
leyball squad captured the 20th annual
Provincial Cup Tournament in Bramp-
ton Nov. 19 and 20.
The tournament drew 48 girls'
teams representing schools throughout
Ontario.
The Claremont squad, consisting of
Grade 7 and 8 students, won its six -
team pool, and advanced through the
elimination rounds to the final where it
met St. Michael's school from London.
In the championship game, Clare-
mont earned a straight -game 15-10, 5-
4 victory over St. Michael's to claim
the Provincial Cup.
Claremont co -coach Andrea Wan-
ninkhof reports the team has been
practising every day since the start of
school in September. with the ultimate
goal to win the Provincial Cup. Al-
though several teams from the school
have advanced to the elimination
rounds, none have laid claim to the
tournament crown.
"This year's team displayed the en-
ergy, strategy and self-discipline nec-
essary to go past the elimination
rounds and take the whole thing
home," says Ms. Wanninkhof, who
coached the team with Laurie Senyk.
"It took us four years to do it, but we
finally did it."
To advance to the championship
game, Claremont dispatched St. Mar-
guerite D'Youville from the Halton
separate school board to the sidelines
with a 15-11, 15-1 victory.
In the elimination rounds, Clare-
mont beat Kelsey from Toronto 15-2,
15-8 in round one. In the second
round, the Claremont girls defeated
Pringle Creek from Durham 15-8, 15-
10 and in the third round split games
with Glen Dhu, also from Durham, 15-
6, 16-14 to make it to the final four
teams.
In pool action, Claremont played
five games. winning four and splitting
one. Claremont defeated Fletcher's
Creek from Peel Region 15-0, 15-7,
Centennial Middle from Halton 15-4,
15-9, Stephen Saywell from Durham
Region 15-11, 15-13 and Birch Cliff
from Scarborough 15-5 and 15-7.
Claremont split games with Lisgar
from Peel Region 15-2, 14-16.

The Regional Municipality of Durham will be holding a Public Information Centre to
discuss conceptual plans for a new alignment for Brock Road, bypassing the community
of Brougham. The Bypass has been shown in the Official Plans of both Durham and
Pickering. Based on work completed to date, it is proposed to construct the bypass
about 500 m east of existing Brock Road. The width of the Bypass would be four lanes
south of Highway 7, and 2 lanes north of Highway 7. A partial interchange with 407 ETR
would be included, with signals at the ramp intersections. The timing of construction has
not been determined.
Planning and design work will be completed under Schedule "C" in accordance with the
Class Environmental Assessment for Municipal Road Projects. In addition, the work will
comply with the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act.
