and Training. Colleges and Uni-
versities Minister Dianne Cun-

the Passport to Prosperity cam-
paign at a news conference in

The government describes the
campaign as "an employer -to -em-

help students explore possible ca-

Dave Ravmont, spokesman for
the Colleges and Universities Min-

spread the word about the benefits
of such programs to other employ-
ers in their industry so more com-

other vehicle and was moving back into
the right lane and he lost control.
Durham Regional Police say. His car
went sideways into a ditch, where it
sheared off a hydro pole.
Emergency crews extricated both
trapped men after prying off the roof
and front doors of the mangled vehicle.
"They were banged up pretty badly
with facial injuries;" says Constable
John Dorsch. Both were conscious
when emergency crews arrived.
He says witnesses travelling in the
passed vehicle reported Mr. Payne's car
was "travelling fast" at a speed they es-
timated at approximately 100 km/h
when the accident occurred.
Const. Dorsch reports the road was
..clear and dry with no problems"
Meanwhile, the accident left most of
Ajax and a large part of Pickering with-
out electricity for varying amounts of
time. The power failure initially affect-
ed about 5,000 homes and businesses in
the area bordered roughly by 5th Con-
cession Road on the north. 13ayly Street
to the south, Brock Road on the west
and Lakendge Road to the east.
Most customers had their power re-
stored within 30 minutes, reported
George Armstrong, manager of regula-
tory affairs and key projects at Veridian,
the new local hydro utility for Ajax,
Pickering and Clarington.
However. about 100 customers
along Westncy Road north of Fifth
Concxssion Road would have to wait
three or four hours while crews re-
placed the pole that was hit.

We must never,
ever forget
Remembering horrors of war
critical for future
Yes. this Remembrance Day is dif-
ferent, it feels unique.
Like many other things in life, this
Remembrance Day seems to mark the
end of one era and the beginning of a
new one.
This Remembrance Day puts the
cap on the bloodiest, most destructive
century in history. The weapons of
war. honed on the battlefields and in
the scientific labs of nations through-
out time. moved from the stone and
stick, to the sword and shield, to the
musket and lance to the missile and
airplane to the atomic bomb.
The two world wars saw about 70
million people killed, far more than
had ever lost their lives in all the wars
in history preceding them. The war to
end all wars. the First World War or
Great War, wasn't. It was a prelude to
the Second World War.
More than 100,000 Canadians
bravely fought and died on battle-
fields in Europe and Asia this centu-
ry. Their sacrifice was so great, mere
words do not do it justice. They were
there on the slopes of Vimy Ridge
and on the beaches of Normandy.
They did our nation proud.
On Thursday, we will mark the
sacrifices our soldiers made with two
minutes of silence instead of the cus-
tomary one. This 'extra' minute is
meant to remind us all of just how
important this solemn day is.
As the years roll on and fewer vet-
crans of the two world wars and the
Korean War remain, it becomes easi-
er to forget. Several generations of
young people have little real knowl-
edge or any cognitive experience of
war. Ancient history is what hap-
pened two or three decades ago. It's
hard for them to grasp the events of
the 1940s or those that occurred ear-
lier.
But forgetting history often leads
to tragic consequences. There were
mass murdering, psychotic tyrants
before Adolf Hitler, just as surely as
there have been many since. We see
examples of powerful killers every-
where in our world today: Saddam
Hussein, Slobodan Milosevic and
Augusto Pinochet to name a few.
It is what could happen to our
world in the future to which we must
turn our thoughts on Remembrance
Day, as much as to the efforts of our
fighting men and women of the past.
Few could have predicted the impact
of the First or Second World Wars a
decade before each occurred.
We must ensure, through strong
world-wide alliances, through the ef-
forts of peacekeepers across the
globe, through the efforts of interna-
tional bodies like the United Nations,
that another world war never hap-
pens. That is the greatest legacy we
could receive on Remembrance Day.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Than veterans for ours, that would be a start.
They fought for freedom and
equality for people of all colours
and religions.
Even though I think a garden
at the Ajax lakefront would be a
wonderful tribute to Second
World War veterans, maybe we
should be putting the money and
time toward helping the surviv-
ing veterans.
I'm sure Ms. Medeiros's fa-
ther is only one of many veterans
who could use our money and
support. Put the money toward
helping these great people who ;
made our country a wonderful
place to live, whether it goes to
the seniors to help with home
oxygen therapy, snow shovel-
ling, grass cutting or something
else they need.
Take the time to help a senior
in your neighbourhood, even if
you can only afford to lend an
car or a helping hand.
Teach our children to respect
all different types of people and
remember why we are all here
and live the lives we do.
We all have our seniors to
thank and someday we will be in
their shoes.
and other seniors
for lives we have
To the editor:
Many times I have wanted to
write in response to various let-
ters to the editor of the News Ad-
vertiser, but never made the time.
However, Mary Ann Medeiros's
letter about her father touched
me.
Many men and women have
given themselves to fight to
make our country a better place
to live and raise our children. I
think that nothing will ever be
enough to honour these people
but if we could all remember the
reasons so many gave their lives

My thoughts on this article start-
ed on Thanksgiving when I asked
each member of my family prior to
eating to say what they were thank-
ful for.
My eight-year-old grandchild
went first and said, "thank you for
all the good food."
The previous generation, my
children, said they were thankful for
the love of family and friends.
My husband cited the animals
which share our life and the wildlife
in our surroundings.
I reported I'm most grateful for
the trees, fresh water and the like.
Last, but certainly not least, my

mother who is 84 said, "I am thank-
ful for having spent my entire life in
Canada and am proud to be Canadi-
an" It stopped all of us.
.I have just returned from a con-
ference in New Orleans. We had a
wonderful time, met old friends and
new. We enjoyed the music and had
some great meals.
However, as we walked about the
city, we couldn't get over how dirty
it was. The streets were littered with
trash, many buildings were run
down and in unsafe condition.
Many storefronts had chain
fences guarding them. On speaking
with the guides and taxi drivers in
New Orleans, we found that guns
were very much a part of everyday
life.
We listened to the debates on
television for the future president of
-the United States. Health care for all
was a very big issue. Gun control
ran a close second.
My mother's words kept coming
back to me. We are truly fortunate
and we should be thankful for being
a part of this country, which we
must all love and care for.

Pickering PaP PAGE 12 NEWS ADVERnSER TUESDAY nthers finally have new head coach
Oshawa resident Brian Blad behind bench for Friday's game against Parry Sound
BY AL RIVETT
Sports Editor
PICKERING — The
Pickering Boyer Pontiac
Panthers finally have a new
bench boss.
After several weeks of
general manager Ron Bliz-
zard filling in as interim
coach, the team has hired
Brian Blad, a former player
and scout in the East Coast
Hockey League, as the Pan-
thers' new head coach.
The position came open
after former head coach
Eric Ross and his staff re-
signed last month, citing
"philosophical differences
between the coaching staff
and upper management"
after the rookie -laden club
suffered a dismal start to
the OHA Ontario Provin-
cial Junior 'A' HockeN
League season.
Blad, 32, of Oshawa,
says he's looking forward
to stepping behind the
bench for his first foray as

ing over a Panthers team
which is in last place in the
league's South Conference

Hot goaltender

BYAL RIVETT
Sports Editor
PICKERING — A hot
Parry Sound Shamrocks
goaltender denied the Pick-
ering Boyer Pontiac Panthers
their third consecutive junior
hockey win in a home -ice
loss at the Pickering Recre-
ation Complex Friday night.
Panthers' shooters fired
everything but the kitchen
sink at Pang Sound netmin-
der Tyler Mercier. In fact,
Mercier was peppered with
63 shots, allowing only two
to enter the net in a 4-2 vic-
tory by the northern Ontario
visitors in OHA Ontario
Provincial Junior 'A' Hockey
League action.
The Panthers hosted the
North York Rangers at the
complex Monday night. The
[result wasn't available at the
News Advertiser's press
deadline.
Calling Friday's match
"painful" to watch, interim
head coach Ron Blizzard,
who was joined behind the
bench by new head coach
Brian Blad who's being
"eased in" to the position,
says his troops put in a work-
man -like effort, but could
not solve Mercier who was
basically impenetrable in the
.Shamrocks' net.
"I don't know how many
goal posts or crossbars we
hit, but half a dozen would-
n't be unrealistic. (Mercier)
was just incredible. We

Most of the Pickering
shots came in the second pe-
riod, with 30 shots fired at
Mercier. The Panthers, how-
ever, went goal -less in the
frame, while Panty Sound
had opened up a 3-0 cushion
after 40 minutes.
The Panthers rebounded
in the third period, scoring
twice on Mercier, but could
get no closer. The Sham-
rocks sealed the deal with an
empty -net goal with 26 sec-
onds remaining.
Patrick O'Halloran
scored both Pickering goals,
assisted by Oliver Lopez
with two, Garret Winder and
Les Madasci with one
apiece.
