Two women were released un- harmed at the nearby Amberlea Plaza and the third returned home in the vehicle shortly be-. fore 10 p.m. suffering only minor injuries. The ACES report stat- ed "exposure to 7,(XX) BqA repre- sents a risk of approximately 340 excess fatal cancers per million people exposed over their entire lives', while the acceptable risk from contaminants under other regulations is often in the area of one excess cancer per million people exposed. After receiving the ACES re- port, the Province set the interim standard and asked the federal government for assistance. A committee , of representatives from the MOE, Health Canada and the Atomic Energy Control Board was established to exam- ine the issue. That committee, in a report entitled 'Assessment and Management of Cancer Risks from Radiological and Chemical Hazards', recommended retain- ing the 7,000 Bq/1 standard. The Environment Ministry is now in the process of adopting a new standard, and has proposed the 7,000 Bq/1 limit. "From our perspective as a public interest organization," DNA has written in a letter to the ministry, "the double standard which allows extra risk to the public from exposure to radioac- tive materials, as compared to other hazardous substances, is unacceptable and should be eliminated in the process of set- ting the Ontario Drinking Water Objectives for radioactive mate- rials. DURHAM NEWS ADV ERTISFR NOV- - 7 1 9 9 9 17 EDITORIAL Students denied chance to make views known Separate school board off base in giving pupils a bad lesson on rights Local students are missing a chance many of their counterparts across Cana- da will get Nov. 19 - the right to vote. As part of the 10th anniversary of the UNICEF Convention on the Rights of the Child, students across the country are being asked to vote on the rights they consider the most important for kids. Those rights include education, family, food and shelter and rest and play. You wouldn't think any of those rights would cause anybody a concern but they have. At the Durham Catholic District School Board, chairman Mary Ann Martin explains schools have been in- formed not to distribute anv information about the vote until the board investi- gates it further. She notes information about the student election "was deliv- ered to all of the schools directly" with- out first going to the director. Durham District School Board com- munications manager Man Brown re- port~ there doesn't appear to be much interest in participating in the vote at schools across the region. At a recent secondary school principals' meeting, only Brock High School in Cannington indicated plans were under way to hold the vote at the school, Ms. Brown says, noting participation in the event is an in- dividual school decision. In a country that continues to look for ways to increase voter turnout at the fed- eral, provincial and municipal levels, Housinglan no Garden of Eden p telling students they are not allowed to vote on an issue as basic as children's .rights sends a bad message about the de- mocratic process. Students who are told at an early age they can't vote may take that message with them the rest of their lives. At the public board, principals should take an active role in encourag- ing the vote at their schools. It's also unnerving to see our pub- licly -funded school system, which should be teaching our children about the need to vote and to speak out on is- sues they deem important, place a gag order or show indifference to the vote in our local classrooms. To justify this decision by saying trustees were not informed is a mistake. UNICEF's decision to approach princi- pals may be seen as the wrong one but it is the school principal who can best say how the vote is to take place. Principals should have been given the chance to discuss the vote with teachers who could have then used the 10 rights as part of a lesson on democracy. Those principals who showed indifference may be selling their students short in not taking advan- tage of this opportunity. In the end, the students are left with a missed opportunity and an educational experience has been lost. That's a pity. E-mail comments on this editorial to nnews@durham.net. "We didn't know whether we'd win, lose or draw," says Wayne Cas- sidy, owner of Cassidy & Company Architectural Technologists in Ajax which was named one of this year's recipients. But, he adds, when he thought about what the company has accomplished over the past five or six years, he began to think "If we didn't win, what were we doing wrong? "The bottom line was we solidi- fy the best of all those items (the judges were looking at)," says Mr. Cassidy, noting the company is very active in the community, supporting approximately 40 different minor sports teams and running an annual charity golf tournament for the Ajax -Pickering Association for Community Living. A total of 22 companies were nominated for the awards which recognize businesses that have demonstrated a commitment to cus- tomer service, entrepreneurship and innovation, continuous improve- ment, community support, environ- mental efforts and safety. Nominees arc also evaluated by an indepen- dent panel of judges on their nation- al and international achievements. "it was a big surprise for us to actually win;' says Jeff Lazenby, who co-founded Pickering's Dy- namic Images Advertising with Patrick Doyle in 1990. "We were thrilled to win. It was unbelievable" The company, which creates promotional products for its clients, was nominated for a business excel- lence award in 1997. And, Mr. Winners of this year's Ajax -Pickering Board of Trade Business Ex- cellence Awards celebrated their achievements at a black -tie gala in Pickering last weekend. This year's recipients include (back row from left) Linda Bond of Interim Personnel, David McEachnie of McEachnie Funeral Home and Wayne Cassidy of Cassidy and Company Arrhitectural Technologists. In front from left are Bob Oldman of Prudential Achievers Realty and Patrick Doyle and Jeff Lazenby, both of Dynamic Images Advertising. DuPont Canada Inc. in Ajar also won an award this year. Lazenby believes the firm was se- lected as a winner this year because of "where we came from and where we are today... the journey we've taken and how we've grown" The business began in the base- ment of Mr. Lazenby's parents' home in 1990 and, after four moves to accommodate growth, the com- pany is now located in a 2,500 - square -foot office on Brock Road. At Interim Personnel in Picker- ing, which fills flexible staffing needs for its clients, office manager Linda Smyth believes it's the com- pany's dedication to customer ser- vice and community involvement that set it apart from other nomi- nees. "We like to go the extra mile for our clients;' she says. "We go above and beyond the call of customer ser- vice. Ms. Smyth notes the black -tie Cala at the Pickering Recreation ('ornplex was "wonderful. The Board of Trade did a fabulous job" Bob Oldman, owner of Pruden- tial Achievers Realty, is proud the .ompany won on its first nomina- tion. Founded in 1985. Achievers is a locally -owned firm that focuses primarily on the sale of residential .Ind commercial properties in Pick- _nng. But, the business, which re- _cived its ISO 9002 certification in 998. also owns seven "landmark" buildings in Ajax, Pickering and Oshawa, Mr. Oldman says. "It was a nice surprise;" he says of the award. "We have a lot of con- fidence in the company" McEachnie Funeral Home in Ajax was also a winner this year. And, David McEachnie, who took over the business with his brother Scott when their father William retired in 1994 and the company was purchased by Trilli- um Funeral Services, says, "As a fu- neral home we feel very honoured to have been selected with all of the businesses and industry in Ajax and Pickering. fffl 'The award speaks for itself:' he says. 1 guess we must have ex- celled (in the areas the judges looked at)" At DuPont Canada Inc., occupa- tional health and safety supervisor Jim McKinnon attributes the award to the company's safety record and ' ..concern for the environment. "We have the best safety record { of any company in Canada," Mr. McKinnon says. He notes the Ajax Automotive Finishes Division is also "very environmentally con- scious" and very involved in the community. Kindemarten ets ood marks from arents in Durhamg g p But staff shortage is perceived, survey shows BY SUSAN O'NEILL Staff Writer Most parents of students en- rolled in junior and senior kinder- garten are happy with the programs, but many believe more teachers are needed, according to the Durham public school board's Kindergarten Years Survey. Completed by 3,338 parents and 159 teachers in June, the survey was developed by the Durham District School Board's kindergarten steer- ing committee to evaluate the effec- tiveness of its programs. And, as Pat Prentice, principal of Oshawa's Sunset Heights Public School and the board's education officer for kindergarten programs, told trustees Monday, the majority of parents are satisfied students' needs are being met. Ms. Prentice told the standing committee the sur- vey responses - included "glowing reports on teacher performance, the programs that were offered and the supports (parents) received" According to the results, 92 per cent of parents agree or strongly agree students' learning needs are met in the board's kindergarten pro- grams, while 98 per cent of teachers also agree with that statement. .BEV FREEDMAN Class sizes unlikely to change. There is also a high correlation between the number of parents and teachers who believe kindergarten students enjoy going to school and that the organization of the young- sters' day includes a balanced pro- gram. However, Ms. Prentice reported parents and educators had some concerns about the student -teacher ratio in the classroom. "Staff do not see it as acceptable and a great percentage of our par- RUTH ANN SCHEDLICH 'An equity issue.' ents do not see it as acceptable;' she said, noting under provincial legis- lation the average class size in ele- mentary schools must be 25. How- ever, some classes have more than 25 pupils. The survey shows 57.2 per cent of parents and 28.8 per cent of teachers believe those class sizes are alright. In response to a question from Uxbridge Trustee Nancy Loraine whether the class sizes could be re- duced, superintendent of programs Be- Freedman said it's unlikely they'll change. "That would mean a major shift in how schools are funded;' she said. Schools "would need a major infusion of money" Teachers also raised concerns about the need for renovations to some kindergarten classrooms, said Ms. Prentice, who noted some facil- ities in older schools are small and don't have separate washrooms for the youngsters. Only 78.6 per cent of teachers agree the physical environment meets the needs of students, while 91.5 per cent of parents feel the sante way. Superintendent of facilities ser- vices Jack Massie told trustees there are a number of schools requiring upgrades to their kindergarten facil- ities. And, several trustees believe those upgrades should be a priority in the public school boar'd's next system -wide accommodation plan. "It comes down to an equity issue," said Pickering Trustee Ruth Ann Schedlich. The board will conduct another Kindergarten Years Survey in June. NOV. 7, 1999 Cadet remembered Durham Region councillors ex- pressed their sympathies this week after the Durham Regional Police Services lost one of its "newest and youngest police officers" in a traffic accident shortly after he graduated from police college. Speaking to her Regional col- leagues Wednesday, Police Ser- vices Board member and Uxbridge Mayor Gerri Lynn O'Connor called the death of Allan Christiansen, 22, of Courtice, "unfortunate, tragic" Mr. Christiansen graduated from the Ontario Police College in Aylmer on Thursday, Oct. 28, and was heading home with friend Bar- bara McCartney, 30, of Kingston. They were eastbound on Hwy. 401 when the driver of a westbound car lost control and crossed the high- way, hitting Mr. Christiansen's vehi- cle. The crash occurred seven kilo- metres; east of Drumbo Road, in Oxford County, between Woodstock and Waterloo, about 50 kilometres east of the police college. Mr. Christiansen was scheduled to start work this past Monday at the Pickering station, Mayor O'Connor said. Durham Regional Police Chief Kevin McAlpine attended the coun- cil meeting Wednesday for Mayor O'Connor's address and then left. "Our sympathies go to his fami- ly and colleagues," Mayor O'Connor added. Regional Chairman Roger An- derson, a former Durham Police of- ficer, said, "I know how this man felt coming home on the road from Ayfiner." Consuftant selected The consulting firm of Totten Sims Hubidd has been retained by Durham Region to conduct the Transportation Master Plan. Regional council approved on Wednesday hiring the firm at a cost of $299,220. The total cost for the study is about $320,000. The rest of the cost is for the GST and advertising. The master plan will establish transportation and transit infrastruc- ture and program priorities for the Region to 2021 and beyond. It will take about two years to complete. G I could help soba disputes The Greater Toronto Services Board should be involved in seffl" a dispute only if the batt V munict- pallities agree. And, Durham Region wants the Ward to Wait its dispute resolution acts to issues within its man- date, such as transit and trartsporta- tion. Regional council on Wednes- day approved a staff report outlining Durham's position on the GTSB being involved in dispute resolution. The Region only wants the board in- volved if the municipalities butting heads voluntarily agree. Also, a neutral third party, such as a profes- sional mediator, should be involved to ensure the matter is kept confi- dential. The disputing parties should also share the cost for the mediator, council decided. Dentures that just won't fit or a partial plate that simply can't achieve the I(x)k you want. Well Dental implants might be the solution for you WHAT IS A DENTAL IMPLANT? Your natural teeth consist of a root and a crown. The "r(x)t" is the portion below your gums which anchors the tooth to tissues and jawbone. The "crown" is the visible part of your tooth, which allows you to eat and speak. A dental implant is basically a new tooth/teeth (both prosthetic root and crown). A titanium metal or surgically graded stainless steel fixture is placed into the supporting bone under the gum. It is then left for a 3 to 6 month duration to allow for proper healing and integration of your bone. After your waiting period is over, a support post is placed in the implant and the prosthetic, crown or denture is custom fabricated to fit accurately and permanently. 0 is • Free consultation • No referral necessary • Braces for adults and children • Evening and Saturday appointments available Dr. Christopher Tom Orthodontist Pickering Town Centre, Lower Level FOR MORE INFORMATION CALL THE DURHAM DENTAL CENTRE AT 1905) 4274280. So much so, peo- ple tend to divorce them from your partner, the upper Denture. The lower Denture has become somewhat of a misfit, and seeks refuge in the most unlikely places. Bottom drawers, bottom of the bed, amongst lip- sticks and combs in ladies handbags, lunch pails, back pockets, and if they have a car- ing owner, submerged for eternity in a den- ture bath. You you see the "lot" of a lower den- ture leaves "a lot" to be desired. ALL IS NOT LOST You can have a "soft liner" put in your lower Denture. This is a "perma- nent" liner and will stay soft as long as your denture lasts. OTHER REASONS Medication can give you a "dry mouth". This can cause sore spots. Bone chips can appear many years after the initial insertion. As we get older, our body goes through change, tissue becomes more sensi- tive to pressure, which leads to sore spots. Poor oral hygiene can be the reason for den- ture discomfort. Dentures must be brushed thoroughly after even, meal. TO EASE DISCOMFORT Rinse your mouth h ith baking u,da or Salt, Leave the offending denture out as much as possi- ble. You should brush your gums, palate and tongue with a soft bristle Toothbrush after every meal and before going to sleep. A sore mouth, if untreat- ed, could lead to complications. If the problem recurs regularly, contact your local denturist. WHAT IS SPINAL SUBLUXATION? A spinal subluxation is a minor misalignment of a vertebra in your spine that leads to malfunction and a loss of health. HOW SERIOUS IS THIS CONDITION? There is a vast range of severity of spinal subluxa- tions from mere fixations of mobility of individual seg- ments of the spine barely detectable by motion pal- pation of the spine (the chi- ropractor's expertise) to degenerative disc and joint disease visible on xrays all too often leading to fusion of the area. WHY SHOULD I BE CONCERNED ABOUT MY SPINAL HEALTH? The bones of your spine house and protect the trillions of delicate nerve fibres which originate in your brain travel down through the spinal canal and branch off as nerve roots passing through the vertebral foramen- (the opening between spinal bones) and provide vital messages to every part of your body to keep it healthy. If one or more ver- tebrae become misaligned there is an interruption of the number and/or strength of the mental impulses that are required for normal homeostasis/balance. SO WHY IS THAT SO IMPORTANT TO ME? When two cells come together to form the human body the first development from those cells is the noto- chord which becomes the brain and nervous system. Out of this • delicately designed group of nerves comes the spinal nerves and all of the other systems are outpouchings of the nervous system. Your nerve system is your lifeline. It is that which keeps life's energy coursing through your body. If you are losing mental impulses little by little every day of course muscles will tighten up. Of course, circulation will be distorted. Of course your tissues are not going to regenerate as quickly as they are supposed to. Of course you will feel slug- gish. You start to feel like things just aren't right. You may not even have any medical conditions show- ing up yet; but most med- ical conditions creep up on you over time. Wouldn't it make sense to see if your spine and nervous system are functioning the way they are meant to by design? HOW DO I KNOW IF SPINAL SUBLUXATIONS ARI: CAUSING: ME TROUBLE? This is a real problem. You don't often know when vertebrae are misaligned unless you have just had a traumatic injury. But even then the mental impulses can be turned off sufficient- ly fairly quickly and make you think that the problem has gone away, only to show up as some degenera- tive condition years later. The cause of the pain you have today may not be as simple as having ;ust turned to reach a shopping bag in the back seat of the car. It could even be from little incidences like that building up over a long period of time eventually causing a hopefully tempo- rary debilitating situation. Like a toothache you don't usually know there is decay until it builds up sufficient- ly to cause the nerves to feel it. Then it takes slot of work to fix the problem. It makes more sense to have regular checkups to pre- vent as much aggravation as possible. WHO CORRECTS SPINAL SUBLUXATIONS? Your doctor of chiropractic corrects spinal subluxa- tions. Chiropractors are one of five health profes- sionals designated as doc- tors, the only ones allowed by law to diagnose. Your doctor of chiropractic spe- cializes in the detection, diagnosis, and correction of spinal problems. Doctors of chiropractic are properly trained and edu- cated with respect to the spine and nervous system and they know what to do and maybe even more importantly, chiropractors know what not to do. This is very important when you are dealing with this vital part of your body. It cannot be taken lightly. And yet all too often people neglect this most critical area of their body. IS SPINAL HEALTH CARE ESSENTIAL FOR EVERYONE? Doctors of Chiropractic work with spines of all ages. Some 20 year olds have spines that look like an 80 year old's and some 80 year old's have spines like a 20 year old should have. The only way to tell is to have a doctor of chiropractic examine your spine. Depending on the state of your spine you will need only a little bit of care or alot of care. Depending on whether you want cor- rection or mere pain relief the length of time is entire- ly up to you... but you have the opportunity of know- ing and helping yourself. Everyone should have a periodic spinal exam by a doctor of chiropractic. a Vo G. S. T d P.S.T. A temperate climate and great outdoor life. But being born 'down under' automatically means you're thousands of miles from other coun- tries. And long distance travel can be lethal. The culprit is the pulmonary embolism (blood clot). But North Americans who face long plane flights are not immune to it. The Doctor Game W Gifford -Jones, M.D. "Nv Dr. Gabrielle McMullin is a vascular sur- geon at Sutherland Hospital, Sydney. She told the annual meeting of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons that Australians are amongst the highest users of long airplane flights in the world. And too many are dying from pulmonary embolism. Blood clots form in the legs during long flights due to decreased movement of the legs, cramped seating, pressurized cabins, dehydra- tion and alcohol consumption. Dr. McMullin says, 'As a surgeon 1 see at least one patient a month with venous throm- bosis (blood clot) as a result of lengthy air- plane travel." McMullin says a small number drop dead as they walk off the plane. It happens when the blood clot breaks away from the vein wall and travels to the lungs. But more commonly the clots damage leg veins so badly that chronic ulcers are the re- sult. Sitting in a cramped plane for 20 hours nearly killed a colleague of mine. Blood pooled in his legs. Blood platelets then formed a clot which broke away just after he landed in Sydney. Prompt treatment saved his life. But pulmonary embolism is not a rare dis- ease. Every year about 650.000 North Ameri- cans are admitted to hospital with this diagno- sis. And 100.000 die. Several years ago Dan Quayle, former Vice -President of the U.S. developed chest pain and shortness of breath. Doctors in emer- gency diagnosed pneumonia and sent him home on antibiotics. But the following morn- ing the real diagnosis was made, "pulmonary embolism" It's amazing venous circulation in the legs doesn't cause trouble more often. Day after day the circulatory system fights Newton's pull of gravity. Fortunately, the movement of leg muscles pressing against veins keeps the blood moving. Two types of blood clots occur in the legs. One is a superficial inflammation (phlebitis) localized just under the skin. It's normally the result of varicose veins. Superficial phlebitis causes a reddened streak on the skin and the clot may feel like a tender red cord. These clots rarely travel to the lungs and clear up in a few days. Deep blood clots, on the other hand, are another matter. Fifty per cent of pa- tients with deep thrombophlebitis have no warning leg symptoms until pulmonary em- bolism strikes. This is the type you never for- get. My crystal ball predicts more cases of pul- monary embolism in the future, due to an aging population that requires more surgical procedures. But I believe the great majority of cases will be self- inflicted. The national epi- demic of obesity means more cases of dia- betes, hypertension and varicose veins. Add inactivity to this mix and you have the perfect combination for pulmonary embolism. So what do I do on long plane flights'? The same as I do every day. I try to keep the blood well-oiled in several ways. Having had a by- pass operation I take an 81 milligram Aspirin tablet daily. This makes blood platelets more slippery and less likely to stick together to form a blood clot. Knowing what I know now I'd follow this program starting at about 50 years of age. Studies show that this decreases the risk of cardiovascular disease. But before taking Aspirin, check with your own doctor. I agree excessive alcohol consumption is undesirable either on the ground or in the air. But an alcoholic drink also oils blood platelets. In addition it decreases the level of fibrinogen, a small particle in the blood that promotes clotting. And yes, I also fidget a lot (that comes naturally!) and walk as much as possible during long plane flights. at dzz'itan' ct2 Relief from costly funeral expenses For too long in times of sadness and grief, the public have been overpaying for funeral merchandise. Now there is relief in sight with the arrival of stores offering top qual- ity funeral merchandise at a lower cost. Under provincial law (The Funeral Act) funeral homes are oblig- ated to accept caskets and funeral merchan- dise purchased from retail speciality dealers. Funeral homes cannot charge a handling or penalty fee or increase the cost of services should you choose a specialty dealer as an affordable option. Pre -Planning a funeral makes excellent financial sense and lessens the burden on loved ones. By choosing to purchase caskets, urns, monuments, mark- ers and flower arrange- ments from a dealer, you can save hundreds to thousands of dollars on a combination of these items. Although this is a relatively new concept in Canada, it has been wildly popular with cost-conscious con- sumers in the U.S.A. and Europe for decades.
