Elemenlat-vassessment scores improve

Young Durham students are per-
forming above the Ontario average
in reading, writing and mathemat-

and 6 test results show.
'-This is a really, really good
news item for Durham;' says
Durham District School Board su-
perintendent of programs Bev
Freedman. 'Traditionally Durham
has been below the provincial aver-
age. This year we're above the
provincial average in absolutely
everything both in Grade 3 and

May.
More than 8,000 Grade 3 and 6
students in Durham were tested be-
tween May 10 and 2H, the first year
for the Grade 6 assessments and the
third year for the Grade 3 tests.
The assessments, which are de-
signed to provide a snapshot of stu-
dents' learning skills, are based on
the Province's new elementary
school curriculum.
The testing is graded on a four -
level scale, with four being excel-
lent and one poor. The provincial
standard is a level three.

Life is a carnival in Pickering far too often
`We owe this town more than a carnival on every corner': Dickerson
BY MARIANNE TAKACS
Staff Writer
PICKERING — The Town
needs to get out of the carnival busi-
ness and some carnivals need to get
out of town.
That was the view expressed by
most politicians Monday night as
Pickering council's executive com-
mittee considered four applications
for carnivals — for 'pony and pig
traces' in the parking lot at the Metro
East Trade Centre (METC) Oct 30
WO 31; a carnival Oct. 21 to 31 in
the parking lot of the Canadian Tire
store on Brock Road; a carnival
every weekend from Oct. 30 to Nov.
28 in the METC parking lot; and a
carnival April 25 to 30, 2000 in the
:METC parking lot.
"Goodness, I think we owe this
town more than a camival on every
corner;" said Ward 2 Regional
Councillor Doug Dickerson. "I
think this has gotten totally out of
hand" He suggested that if opera-
tors want their carnivals running all
the time here they should acquire a
permanent site.
'This community is beginning to
become somewhat exploited," sug-
gested Ward I Regional Councillor
Maurice Brenner. "What is begin-
ning to happen is that we are being
seen as a rubber stamp'
Several councillors suggested
Pickering needs to revamp a new
bylaw they approved April 6 requir-
ing for the first time that carnivals
operating here be licensed by the
Town and that each licence be ap-
proved by council. While they
pointed out the carnivals do often
benefit charities, councillors sug-
gested the bylaw steeds to provide
somewhat stricter regulations in
areas such as how many can be held
and the number each operator can
run.
Councillors also suggested the
application process for a licence is
too cumberso ne and time consum-
ing for carnival operators, and per-
haps Town stats should be able to
approve licences. Ward 3 local

Putting three different organizations and their employees together

We're optimistic that we can complete the change to a bigger

That's important to us, because that's how the Power Workers do business.
There are still a lot of decisions to be made.
There's still a lot of work to be done to put the three utilities together

the Power Workers are equipped to make sure the employees have a

And now, the employees will choose which of the two unions they
want to represent them. We'll urge them to choose the Power Workers

disruption and our strength in the legal and health and safety areas.
But of course, that's a choice the employees will make.

Let's see. If Paul Martin went out

Our federal finance minister would

the bloated, incredibly rich Employ-

Mr. Martin (in disguise of course)

BOO!
Are you scared yet'? You should
be ... it's All Hallow's Even:
Tonight is the night spirits of the
dead come back to roam outdoors.
while decent folk huddle inside
around a warm hearth. At least, so
say stories of old.
Speaking of which, do you ever
wonder why we carve faces on
pumpkins' Or why we dress up as
ghosts and witches and other
beasues:' Or why we bob for ap-
ples:' Nk'cll, huddle a little closer.
To find the answer we have to
reach far back into the mists of
time. And it's a %errrry scaaaarrry
story...
CELTIC GHOSTIES
Thr talc begins to the land of
the ancient Celts. At summer's
end, Celtic priests (called Druids)
would hold ceremonies to honour
Samhain, the Lord of the Dead. As
the natural world was withering,
dying or going underground, the
spirit world became more active,
so they belie\ed. The Druids
would build enormous bonfires of
oak branches to help guide these
spirits on their way.
If people had to leave their
homes, they would go in disguise,
so the spirits would not recognize
them. They would even dress up
as the ghosts, witches or monsters
they believed were already roam-
ing about. The Celts also thought
it wise to share their Samhain
feast with roaming ghosties. They
would lea\c little gifts of food and
drink (treats) on their doorstep - to
avoid offending the spirits. who
might retaliate with 'tricks.'
The Romans conquered the
Celts in A.D. 43 and ruled what is
now Great Britain for about 400
years. During this period. two
Raman festivals were combined
with the Celtic festival of
Samhain. One of them, called Fer-
alta, was held in late October to
honour the dead. The other festival
honoured Pomona, the Roman
goddess of fruit and trees. Apples
probably became associated with
Halloween because of this festival.

leaders dedicated Nov. I to the
memory of all those whom the
church had 'hallowed' (made
holy), calling it All Hallow's Day.
The eve before became known as
All Hallow's Even.
In England in more recent cen-
turies, Halloween was sometimes
called Snap Apple Night or Nut
Crack Night, when families would
sit around the fire and tell stories
as they ate apples and nuts.

heaven because he was a miser
and couldn't enter hell because he
played jokes on the devil. As a re-

carrying his lantern until Judg-

REGIONAL CUSTOMS
Many customs developed
which were specific to particular
regions throughout the British
isles and in the new world.

records of a number of those cus-
toms, some of which were taken
from 'The Oshawa Vindicator,'
one of the village of Oshawa's
first newspapers.
"In the 1870's it was very pop-
ular for kids to hide in the cab-
bage fields as unsuspecting trick -
or -treaters went door to door. As
people went by, the kids would
pelt them with cabbages;" says
Oshawa Museum archivist
Tammy Robinson. She adds: the
papers don't mention any in-
stances of serious injuries as a re-
sult. "We looked."
Another prank involved letting
horses and cows out of their en-
closures. At that time the village
„f Oshawa was a lot smaller, and
\as surrounded by farm land. "So

If you want to delve further
into local Halloween lore, over a

;,00dtcs, you might want to head
dw%n to the Oshawa Museum
today, where they arc holding a
free afternoon of Victorian Hal-
loween fun.
The event will be held be-
tween I and 5 p.m, in the Muse-
um's historic houses. Activities
t„r the afternoon include Hal-
loween storytelling in the Robin-
son House Schoolroom, pumpkin
caning, games and activities for
the kids. Adults can come out for
a free Tarot card reading or have
their heads examined by
renowned phrenologist, Dr. Zebc-

is making her mark in Holly-
wood.
Living and working in Los
Angeles for the past three years,
Ms Mink has been part of sever-
al high-profile acting projects
during that time.
Currently, Ms. Mink just fin-
ished work on a commercial for
VISA which will be aired in the
coming weeks.
She also recently worked on
an episode of the sci-fi television
show First Wave on the Space
Channel.
Her role in the show spawned
an interview for an article in the
New York -based magazine
Femme Fatale.
The article, to be called The
Babes of First Wave. hit the
streets in late summer.
Last year, Ms. Mink had a
leading role in the made -for -'.'N'
movie CHiPs '99, based on the
hit series about the California
Highway Patrol.
It also starred the original
CHiPs cast of Erik Estrada as
'Poneh' and Larry Wilcox as
'Jon' and was broadcast on the
American TNT network last Oc-
tober.
Ms. Mink spent four days on
the set of CHiPs with Estrada and
Wilcox, shooting at locations
throughout the L.A. area.

land the role in the movie. While
filming in Vancouver last May,
Ms. Mink received a call about
the opening from CHiPs director
Jon Cassar, who she worked with
on a Hardy Boys production in
Toronto in 1994.
But, her commitments in Van-
couver wouldn't allow her to
work on CHiPs at that time.
Three weeks later, Ms. Mink got
another call from her agent in-
forming her the part was still
available.
Cassar had "held a casting call
to fill the role, but he wasn't
thrilled with the people. The
shooting was pushed back three
to four weeks, so he called my
agent again. I was just finishing
up another show, so it worked out
perfectly," says Ms. Mink.

Corey Sevier of Ajax
A rising young star in Durham
BY AL RIVE7T
Staff Editor
Acting in television and film
roles in such locales as Saskatoon
and Montreal over the past three
years, Ajax's Corey Sevier is hap-
pily back on home turf.
After working in Montreal for
two years and playing the role of
Timmy in the `90s version of the
classic children's television series
Lassie (seen on Canada's YTV
network) and a summer spent in
Saskatoon working on the feature
film Summer of the Monkeys,
Corey is now home in Ajax with
his father and mother, Bruce and
Lynda, and younger brother Kyle,
10, but no less busy in his chosen
craft.
Currently, the 15 -year-old vet-
eran of eight years in the acting
business is working as a principal
character in the television series
Little Men, an adaptation of the
Louisa May Alcott novel. The se-
ries is currently in production for
13 new episodes for the coming
season and there are ongoing ne-
gotiations for another nine
episodes.
Corey plays the role of Dan in
the series which is seen on the
new Pax network in the U.S.
He notes his character is a
marked departure from playing
the squeaky -clean Timmy on
Lassie.
"Dan is a tough, cockv kid.
He's the leader of the boys in the
series.
He's a lot different from
Ajax resident Corey Sevier has become a familiar face to children
across Durham. He starred in the nevs, Lassie television series and
has done work on the Goosebumps franchise.

says Corey, who's been working
on the series since September.

at the Claremont Conservation
Area which allows him to be a
semi -regular Grade 9 student at
Ajax High School and gives him
the luxury of living at home.
"It's 20 minutes down the road
to go to work;" says the perky and
personable actor.
"I get to sleep in my own bed. I
really needed to stay home"
The up-and-coming actor
played his first leading role in the
feature film Summer of the Mon-
keys which was released to video
last December.
The film won a prestigious
Crystal Heart Award at the Indiana
Convention Centre for best "life -
affirming picture" last summer.
Corey accepted the award
along with the film's executive
producer Ilyssa Goodman.
Acting was a natural progres-
sion for Corey who began model-
ling at the age of six months, and
later started to land parts in com-
mercials at age six before earning
a major role in the ABC television
mini-series Family Pictures at age
seven. The show also starred Sam
Ncil and Anjelica Huston. It was
that series which effectively
launched his career in acting.
Outside of the acting arena,
Corey enjoys sports. including
playing soccer on the Ajax War-
riors under -17 team last year
which was coached by his father.
He also plays hockey and has
played basketball and volleyball
and ran track while in elementary
school at Southwood Park Public
School.
"To my close friends, I'm just
regular, old Corey:' he explains.
"I'm a normal kid who happens to
have a pretty cool job."

CANADIAN PREMIER OF AN IRISH COMEDY
"The Mating Season"
By SAM CREE
$36.95 (THURS., FRI. -TAX INCLUDED) $39.95 (SAT. -TAX INCLUDED)
A "Season" of Laughs
The Mating Season just opened at Touch of Class Dinner Theatre. No, it is not a singles' club but
an Irish comedy by Belfast playwright Sam Cree. The opening night audience was kept in stitches
by Cree's wonderfully funny writing and the hilarious antics of a very strong cast.
Anyone who saw last year's Touch of Class production of Don't Tell The Wife by Cree can rest
assured you are in for another very entertaining night.
The play concerns a widower, Sid Gillespie, who is on the verge as asking the oft -married
widow, Stella Morley to be his wife much against the wishes of his two sons, Mervyn and Robin;
his departed wife's brother Fred; and his widowed housekeeper. Mrs. Jamieson, all of whom live
in Sid's house. Now, the problem he faces is that not only does Stella want to live in his house
after they are married and want to bring her brat of a daughter. Vanessa, with her, but she only
wants Sid in the house and none of his family. What is he to do? Why, get them all married off, of
course.
What follows is, quite simply, a romp. On the male side of the cast, Jim Neilly portrays Sid with
impeccably comedic timing. His facial expressions and body movements are a sight to behold and
add greatly to what is already a very funny play. Jim Renshaw turns in a great character as Uncle
Fred the grubby gardener. You can almost smell the compost on his boots. Dan Lalonde, as
Mervyn, and Scott Burnett, as Robin, are fun to watch as two very different brothers.
The female roles are equally varied and well performed. Julia S. Byrne has a nice turn as the
ever -faithful Mrs. J.. Alexandra Savage-Ferr shows good range as the conniving Mrs. Morley. Jean
Renshaw is delightful as Violet Harris, Fred's long -lost sweetheart who has a penchant for licorice
allsorts and other things. Elizabeth Innes and Tamara Blum Cohen are very watch able as Babs
Nixon and Helga Herdman, two wonderfully wacky potential brides for the brothers who are not
quite sure who they have come to marry, and Heather Marie Annis shows a fine mix of petulance
and cunning as Vanessa.
Director Larry O'Leary has certainly done a solid job in taking a fine script and cast and creating
a very enjoyable evening at the theatre.
Other aspects of this production that make it so enjoyable are the beautiful set, the use of Irish
Rovers and classical television and movie theme music, and a very satisfying meal.

THE ONTARIO ECOSCHOOL
WASTE REDUCTION
RECOGNITION PROGRAM
Recycling Council of Ontario 489 College St.,
Ste. 504 Toronto, ON, M613 1A5 Tel: (416) 960-1025
Fax: (416) 960.8053 Web Site: www.rco.on.ca

During WRW '99, an exciting new
school program - the Ontario
EcoSchools Waste Reduction
Recognition Program - will be launched.
This new school program will help
Ontario schools and communities set
and achieve goals in waste reduction by
assessing and recognizing current
waste reduction initiatives, sharing
successes and promoting new ideas.
Participating schools will undertake
school-based activities, such as
assessing the school's waste footprint,
and community outreach activities, such
as blue box surveys. At the end of the
school year, progress at participating
schools will be evaluated and their
successes recognized at an Earth Day
Awards Ceremony.
PICKERING'S ANNUAL
WASTE REDUCTION WEEK
Activities will include:
• Displays including an Earth Machine Composter draw
• Mayor's Challenge - which town, Pickering or Ajax,
generates the least garbage during the month of November?
• Best filed Blue Box contest
• Beer cap guess at The Beer Store in the Whites Rd. Plaza
• Pop tab guess at Daisy Mart on Hwy. 2 and Rougemount
•
Ski Sale 8 Swap at the Pickering Recreation Centre Nov. 5, 6, 7
• Mobile Vacuum offered merchandise on old vacuums
• Participating stores gave away pencils made from
recycled denim to customers who refused a bag
• Loblawrs at Liverpool ml have a mcycing Question and a draw box.
Prize to be a hamper of dams
• School word search contest with a Pizza Pizza prize
• Giveaway in a draw through The Treasure Chest
As our events such as The Mayor's Challenge and The Best
Filled Blue Box need a month to promote, Ajax and Pickenng
committee members, who have been organizing WRW over the
years, feel that the time has come to emphasize the 3Rs for the
entire month of November. This awareness will take us into
December, timely for seasonal gift giving. Hopefully our 3Rs
habits will be tamed into the Christmas holidays.

From the Family of
MARK HUTCHESON
The sudden and untimely death of Mark,
our beloved Sem, Brother,. and Uncle on
Friday Oct. 22, 1999 has saddened us
all. The outpouring of grief from family,
friends and co-workers has been over-
whelming.
To all the nearly 500 friends who came to
Mark's funeral, we say a big Thank You.
Canadian Tire, Pickering, must surely
have been empty that day as it seemed
the whole store came out to say goodbye.
Bell Canada, Hallmark Canada, Exper-
tech Canada and Precision Tools all al-
lowed large numbers of their staff to pay
their respects to Mark and our family.
"Walt's Bar and Grill" seemed to have
been a favourite place to hang out with
friends. Many staff members took the
time to come to the funeral and let us
know how well Mark was thought of.
A wonderful eulogy by Martin Searle
said it all.
Our immediate neighbours, who are also
friends did a lovely job of catering for so
many people. Thank You!!
The floral tributes were beautiful and
brightened up the lives of many seniors
at Ballycliff Lodge after Mark was cre-
mated.
Donations made to the Children's Make
A Wish Foundation were gratefully ac -
Many lovely cards, Mass cards and le
tern are now treasured.
Mark has been cremated and his asht
will rest in a Sundial Urn u at the fan
ily cottage, a place he loved, but was a
ways too busy to enjoy.
Sincere thanks from
Mary, Ken, Paul, Karen,
Jason, Cameron and Zoe
