Halloween stays put in Pickering and Ajax
Kids will be out trick -or -treating Sunday
Ghosts and goblins will be out
trick or treating on Sunday evening,
not Saturday, in Ajax and Pickering.
Ajax deputy clerk Randy Losse
gays the Town has no plans to
change the day youngsters go door-
-to-door from Oct. 31. "Halloween's
'tot even a holiday, it's just an event,"
Mr. Gosse says. "We don't have the
power to change it. "What if we did
and Whitby and Pickering didn't?
I here would be a lot of confusion"
But there won't be any confusion
with Pickering because that Town's
not changing the day either.
"Halloween is nothing official so
a municipality can't order that Hal-
loween will be on Saturday instead
of Sunday," concurs Pickering clerk
Bntce Taylor. "A council can do
that," he adds, "bun it doesn't mean
anything,"

would be held on a Saturday instead

he can remember it happening.
In any case, there doesn't seem to
be any public demand for a switch.
Mr. Taylor says Pickering has re-
ceived only a couple of phone calls
from residents about Halloween,
and that was from people asking if
the day had been moved rather ask-

Suspect to provide blood for AIDS test
Two Durham officers, civilian anxiously await results
BY STEPHEN SHAW
Staff Writer
A man accused of biting two Durham
Regional Police constables and claiming
he infected them with the AIDS virus
has agreed to provide a blood sample for
testing.
"He has voluntarily consented. He
was interviewed about the incident and
has agreed to co-operate with the ongo-
ing investigation;' Detective John Allen
said.
Shackled and handcuffed, Phillip An-
drew Collins, 29, of no fixed address,
appeared briefly Wednesday morning at
a King Street East courthouse in Os-
hawa and requested his bail hearing be
adjourned to today, Friday. He is
charged with three counts of aggravated
assault, resisting arrest, mischief under
$50)0. possession of a controlled sub-
stance and breach of- probation.
Detectives visited Mr. Collins in a
holding cell after his court appearance
and asked him to submit to a blood sam-
ple to be tested for HIV, the virus that
causes AIDS.
A judge then granted a judicial order
authorizing the man's release into police
custody, for no more than 24 hours, to
attend a medical facility for the purpose
of taking blood. Mr. Collins was to be -
returned to the Whitby Jail.
The development stems from an inci-
dent early Saturday at a Park Road
South bar in Oshawa. Thc: two plain-
clothes officers were carving out a rou-
tine inspection looking for liquor licence

Where to Turn When Your
Home Doesn't Sell
Pickering Ontario- If your home
has just come off the market and
hasn't sold, don't be discouraged.
The reason ,your home did not sell
may have nothing to do with your
home or the market. In reality, your
home may have been one of the
more desirable properties for sale.
So Why Didn't Your Home Sell?
Last year almost half of the homes
listed for sale never sold at all, and
many sellers found that there was a
tremendous amount a homeowner
needed to be educated on to sell
their home for top dollar in the
shortest time period.
Don't risk making the wrong
choices and losing both time and
money on your investment. Before
you hire a realtor, know the right
questions to ask to save you time and
money.
Industry experts have prepared a
free special report called "How to Sell
a House that Didn't Sell" which
educates you on the issues involved.

message about how to order your

it for sale.

The SPIRIT of racialFrightful time for all
Durham
BY SUSAN O'NEILL
Stafj' Writer
Stopping the spread of
racism in Catholic schools
across the region is the
goal of more than 80 ele-
mentary students who em-
braced the spirit of a two-
day student leadership and
anti -racism program this
week.
The grotap of Grade 6, 7
and 8 pupils from 10 sepa-
rate schools across the re-
gion took part in the
Durham Catholic District
School Board's Students
Preventing Ignorance and
Racial Intolerance Togeth-
er (SPIRIT) event at Whit-
by's Heydenshore Pavilion
Oct. 26 and 27.
Now in its fifth year, the
SPIRIT program focuses
on educating pupils in di-
versity and provides stu-
dents an opportunity to
participate in role-playing
activities designed to in-
crease their awareness of
the harmful effects of
stereotypes, discrimination
and intolerance.
Students also have a
chance to develop action
plans to fight racism in
their schools.
"I think students
throughout the region need
to develop a sensitivity to-
wards the issues we've
talked about," says pro-
gram organ;jer Marci Mac-
Donald.
"We want students to be
prepared for the future.
They live in a multicultural
society."

information OPG will have
to provide and which may
be issued next week by the
AECB.
It will also include the
final scope likely to be re-
leased in late November or
early December, the EA
draft report expected to be
put together by OPG by late
January, and the EA report
compiled by AECB staff
which the board will use to
t take its final decision, per-
haps in the spring. Mr.
Steele says the associations
will examine all stages of
the EA and comment on
them jointly to OPG, the
AECB and the Town of
'Pickering.
"If another community
association group dFides
they would like to j to us
they're welcoml," he notes,
adding he has been contact-

dents' organizations.
But, the new group won't

tional members.
DNA's Irene Kock says
joining together with the
other citizens' organizations
to respond to the EA is a
good way to make the best
use of the limited resources
they all have.
"We felt it would be to all
our advantages to pool our
resources rather than doing
four submissions.
"We do share a desire to
ensure the assessment is
done to the fullest degree
possible and is as complete
as possible"
Ms. Kock notes she is
confident the new group
will be able to influence the
final scope of the EA.
PESCA also sees advan-
tages in working together
with other residents' groups,
says association president
Paul Kelland.
"We felt we had a good
working relationship with
PACT, DNA and the Liver-
pool West Community As-
sociation," he notes.
Mr. Kelland explains
PESCA believes it needs to
be involved in the EA.
"Being the community
association that is closest to
the (nuclear) plant we think
we have a vested interest in
keeping an eye on that par-
ticular process."
In September when they
quit OPG's Community Ad-
visory Committee (CAC),
the four associations said
they were leaving because
OPG was not "acting in a
meaningful way" on the
input the committee was
providing.
The four had never actu-
ally agreed to join the CAC
and were attending meet-
ings on a interim basis until
their boards made a decision
on whether participation in
the committee was worth-
while. Aside from the Pick-
ering Township Historical
Society and a Scarborough
ratepayers' organization,
they were the only resi-
dents' groups on the com-
mittee.
Mr. Steele notes PACT,
PESCA, LWCA and DNA
have all been identified by
OPG in its submissions to
the AECB as 'stakeholders'
groups in the community to
be consulted on the assess-
ment process, and their ex-
pectation is they will be
consulted.

mount Drive north. Subsequently
the Town installed six specd
bumps and 27 speed hump suns.
We were told these bumps
were to be a test case and if
proven successful would be in-
stalled on south Rougemount
Drive and Rosehank Road. Rose -
bank Road, our sister street, re-
cently got a real sidewalk while
Roueemount south had a 'sidc-
walk' painted on the side of the
road. What's up with that?
Recently we had reason to call
an ambulance to our home. I'll
ncyer forget the sight of the front
end of the ambulance leaving the
ground and the sound it made as it
crashed back down. In my opinion
the only way to provide for pedes-
trian safety is to build a proper
sidewalk.
A year ago the Town installed
"pollards" at the side of the
humps to stop people from dri-
ving around on the shoulder. So
we no longer have snow clearance
from the shoulder which forces
pedestrians to walk in the middle
of the road during winter. I wrote
to the Town about this last winter
but officials wrote back that we
should wait for the snow to melt.
Our councillor says the Town
will not remove any of the bumps.
The Town says it's called 'taking
back the streets' and nothing can
be done without political direc-
tion.
The Town of Pickering has I
been telling people how much we
love our bumps. While there are
people on this street who do love
them, there are also people who
hate them. Count me among the
latter. Each time 1 go out I get
bumped eight times!

EMERGENCY!
Th0 is i s j u s t
a test .
Code
Orange.
There was high drama at the
Ajax and Pickering Health Centre
(APHC) Wednesday morning as the
hospital coped with a major bus ac-
cident, though a pretend one.
A simulation of large-scale trau-
ma was staged by more than 30
drama students from three area high
schools, complete with fake blood,
crying'victims' on stretchers and dis-
traught 'family members' in the wait-
ing room. It was a mock 'Code Or-
ange' event designed to allow hospi-
tal nurses, doctors and other staff to
test their emergency response pro-
cedures.
"We were planning this event for
the last two months, said Tricia Root,
director of nursing for the emergency
department.
"A Code Orange is called when
a large number of injuries are
brought into the hospital at one time.
The whole hospital has to spring into
action and work together."
The 'accident victims' from Ex-
eter, Ajax and Pickering high schools
started their day at S a.m. at Exeter,
where area paramedics applied their
makeup - fake wounds and ban-
dages. At 10 a.m., paramedic stu-
dents from Centennial College
began taking the victims to the hos-
pital.
There, they were seen by an
emergency triage nurse and then
taken to areas such as X-ray, the
fracture clinic, the lab or the operat-
ing room. Most were just wheeled to
their destinations and then 'dis-
charged'. But some were actually
taken into the emergency depart-
ment and provided simulated treat-
ment before being released. In all
cases, assessors watched to see
how the patient flow was handled
and information tracked.
The mock emergency was fol-
lowed by an evaluation session in
the hospital conference rooms.
"The students were great," said
Ms. Root. "Because of their partici-
pation today we will be able to make
improvemeRts that will allow us to
save a life tomorrow."
Thr triage area (top phoio) was pressed into ac-
tion so hospital officials could determine who
required priorit}• cure. Herr, triaye registered

tients' Michelle Liutson and Dan Koerfis during

disaster vvas staged. The victim (in stretcher) is

formation in the treatment roost from other ar-

Crime Stoppers
widens scope
to include
domestic
violence
Cases of domestic violence can
now be anonymously reported to the
Crime Stoppers program in an initia-
tive being hailed the first of its kind
in North America.
A provincewide public awareness
campaign began Monda) to promote
Crime Stoppers as a tool to stop
spousal abuse and will continue
through N,c-,vember, Ontario's 14th
annual Wifr Assault Prevention
Month.
The campaign is the result of a
partnership between Crime Stoppers,
the Ontario Women's Directorate, the
Victim Services Unit and the Chief
Firearms Office of the Ministry of
the Solicitor General.
The expansion of Crime Stoppers'
mandate is in response to recommen-
dations arising from last year's coro-
ner's inquest looking into the deaths
of Arlene May and Randy Isles and
the issues surrounding domestic vio-
lence and the use of firearms.
"Crime Stoppers works to solve
all types of crime. But this is the first
time in Canada domestic violence
has been specifically addressed by
Crime Stoppers;" Ed Lemont, presi-
dent of the Association of Ontario
Crime Stoppers, said in a statement
released Tuesday. "We are very
pleased our program can now be used
to help deal with crimes of this na-
ture"
Calls to Crime Stoppers reporting
cases or suspected cases of domestic
violence will be handled in the same
manners as other tips.
When a tipster calls, a co-ordina-
tor listens to the information and asks
several questions. If the call is deter-
mined legitimate, a code number is
assigned to the caller and is used in
any future dealings.
The co-ordinator passes the infor-
mation on to police investigators so
the appropriateactionis taken.
As part or the program, calls
placed by victims of domestic vio-
lence will be directed to the Ministry
of Solicitor Getitral's Victim Support
Line.

Cleaning Gutters And Downspout
(MASI)-Clean the gutters and downspouts
on your house twice a year and you'll be
spared untold expense and aggravation in
the future. This routine maintenance is easy
to do and requires nothing but your time.
Schedule the job in the spring and fall when
an accumulation of leaves and debris can
clog downspouts and gutters and prevent the
flow of rainwater, away from the house. If
you put off the job, it's a sure bet you'll
have water seepage problems in the
basement, not to mention water -damaged
siding and trim.
Because you'll be working from a ladder,
it's convenient to have a helper who can he
the "go-fer" to run and fetch. This speeds up
the job and prevents you from making
countless trips up and down the ladder. You
need two lightweight buckets, work or
ruhher gloves to protect your hands, and a
garden hose to flush out the gutters and
downspouts after they're cleaned. You can
use your hands or a garden trowel to shovel
out debris or buy a plastic gutter scooping
tool designed specifically for the job.
Carefully position your ladder against the
house so you will avoid resting it directly on
the front edge of the gutter. The direct
weight of you and the ladder can crush or
severely bend the gutter. One easy solution
to this problem is to purchase a ladder
stabilizer which is a U-shaped aluminum bar
that bolts to the top of the ladder and holds it
away from the building. It also helps prevent
the ladder from twisting or sliding.
With or without the stabilizer bar, always
place the ladder on firm, level ground. Move
MI
the ladder often. Don't overstretch or reach
out so far that you have to bend your body
to the right or left when cleaning the gutters
or downspouts.
Begin cleaning the gutters at a corner
close to the downspout. Remove any debris
that may he clogging the downspout. Then
work your way along the gutter until the
bucket is too heavy to handle or it's filled
with leaves and debris. Pass the full bucket
down to your helper to dispose of the debris
while you continue filling up the empty one.
As you complete work along one stretch
of gutter, check to see that it is firmly
attached to the house. Straighten or replace
any faulty gutter hangers. Move the ladder
as you work your way around the house and
clean the entire system of gutters and
downspouts.
To check that water in the gutters and
downspouts runs free and doesn't leak out,
flush the system with your garden hose.
Caulk any leaks with a good quality acrylic
latex caulk.
If the opCn►ng in the gutter leading to the
downspouts constantly clogs, purchase a
downspout guard which is a wire basket that
prevents leaves from clogging the
downspout. If you live in a heavily wooded
area, consider adding gutter screens which
help prevent debris from getting into the
gutters.

Fifteen To Steps A
Room The Way The Pros Do
(BMP) -Painting is the one decorating
project that most people will undertake at
some point in their lifetime. The steps to
successful painting are easy to learn and if
done correctly, can save a lot of time, energy
and money.
I. Remove everything from the room that
you want to protect from paint spills and
splatters.
2. Set up an additional source of light.
This is particularly important when detail or
trim work is being done.
3. Cover floor and remaining furniture
with canvas drop sheets. (Canvas is
preferable to plastic because it doesn't tear.)
4. Remove all electrical cover plates and
hardware. (This is a good time to tape a
paint colour sample to the back of a switch
plate for future reference.)
5. Use spackle to fill all nail holes,
cracks and divots in the wall surfaces and let
dry. then sand. These areas may need to be
spot -primed before painting begins.
6. Tape off and cover all built-ins, trim,
doors and baseboards to prevent spills and
drips from marking them. Remove the tape
soon after painting.
7. Lightl% sand the wall with a pole
sander to remmr am tihcrs stuck to the wall
and to .rcatc a hotter urtace fi)r the paint to

stick.
8. Wash the walls with a damp sponge to
remove excess dust, let dry before painting.
(Note: if walls are particularly greasy or
dirty, wash with a solution of TSP [tri -
sodium phosphate] and warm water. Follow
directions on the package.)
9. Shake or stir the paint before use,
unless you are using a clear finish, which
should be stirred gently. (Shaking causes
bubbles to form in urethane, which will be
transferred to your walls.)
10. Apply a coat of primer, if required.
Let dry before applying paint.
11. If' your project requires more than
one can of paint, combine the paints in a
common can to prevent slight variations in
colour. (This is known as boxing.)
12. Cut in (brush) around the corners of
the walls and along the line where the
ceiling and walls meet but do not brush too
far ahead of where you are painting or the
paint will dry, and as you roller over top of
it, you will get an undesirable dark line,
resulting in what the pros call hat banding.
13. Insert a plastic liner into the paint
tray. Pour in sufficient paint to fill the deep
section. Using a handled roller, dip the roller
in the paint, roll hack and forth so that the
paint soaks in evenly and roll or. wall.
14. Apply loaded paint roller to surface,
placing it first on an unpainted section
adjacent to the area which you have just
painted. Continue this method across the
wall.
15. When paint has dried, follow with a
second coat if required as per
manufacturer's instructions.

World Explorer Cruises has a
way of keeping everyone happy!
Offering passengers the
choice of a 9- or 14-dav cruise

other cruise line serving Alaska
is the way it's done. One such
port offered a hike like no other.
Alaska should he dubbed 'the

views made me want to come
back for more. Juneau. Alaska's
beautiful capital city, is a hiker's
paradise.
I felt fortunate Juneau was
one of the ports of cal I offered by

crew, has a giant itinerary, cover-
ing 14 days rather than the usual
seven and twice the number of
hours in each port than any other
Alaskan cruise: line.
As we put into the port of
Juneau, the informative 'going
ashore' leaflet told me all I need-
ed to know about the Mount
Roberts trail I had planned to
tackle that da%.
Constructed by a Catholic
priest in 1911, this trail offered
steep switchbacks and panoram-
ic views of Alaska's capital city.
With an elevation gain of 4 210
feet, the three-hour hike was
both challenging and rewarding.
The paths were well-
groomed, easy to follow but
challenging at times and I was
appreciative of the benches
found at the many lookouts of-
fered along the way. Glimpses
through the trees revealed a pho-
tographer's paradise. Humanity
and nature blended beautifully as
I gaud over hotels and office
buildings, over the light blue sea
toward the distant backdrop of
the majestic mountains.
My hike continued above the
snow line as nervous squirrels
and birds perched on tree limbs
looked down at their latest visi-
tor. At the three-quarter mark I
encountered the remaining snow
pack. Undaunted, with my toes
neatly placed into the divots
made by other hikers 1 continued
along until I reached the Mt.
Roberts Aerial Tramway, which
offered a bird's eye view of the
city and vallevs bevond.
Opened in 1996, the tramway
boasts a 1713 -foot terminal and
3,(Xx) square -foot platform con-
nected by a covered walkway
leading to the loading deck.

Juneau I savoured the panoramic
view of pine -covered mountains
before heading to the cafe for
some coffee and refreshments.
And refreshed I was. as I
strolled to the loading deck to
hoard the tram for a thrilling ride
down to the cruise ship dock. I
still had a good portion of the
day remaining for sightseeing in
Juneau, before re -boarding to
contunue our Alaskan adventure.
What a day!
I discovered that World Ex-
plorer Cruises offer over 50
shore excursion trips at 14 loca-
tions, with activities from White-
water rafting to shopping. Lec-
tures offered on board will
quench your thirst for knowledge
as will the largest floating library
of 15,000 volumes. You'll learn
more alxwt Alaska from noted
lecturers who travel onboard.
You'll taste the fresh, local
delicacies. You'll get to touch the
face of a glacier. See wildlife.
Photograph and take home hand-
made local crafts. You'll feel, as I
did, as if you're opening the door
to a new horizon yourself.
There's enough time to do it
all. Enough time to become part
of this majestic wonderland. Yes,
World Explorer Cruises does in-
deed keep everyone happy with
