"The public just doesn't know

the Dunmoore Park Community
Association. "We're trying to get
people going to this public informa-

overwhelming these things arc:'

Pickering ponders
strategy to beef

BY MARIANNE TAKACS

PICKERING — Town Coun-
cil has decided to re-examine
Pickering policies on the location
of waste management facilities
here.
Councillors passed a resolu-
tion Monday directing staff to re-
iew existing Official Plan and
coning regulations relating to
waste management facilities, and
to identify possible strategies to
strengthen the Town's ability to
deal with such facilities.
The resolution was proposed
by Ward 3 local Councillor David
Pickles, who suggested changes
were necessary to avoid the types
of battles that have occurred here
in the past over the location and
operation of waste transfer and
processing plants. He pointed out
waste management facilities are
currently permitted in 'M F zones
which could result in Pickering
receiving applications for them in
areas adjacent to residential
neighbourhoods or in places that

Durham firms could
face incorrect tax bills
Region says Province provided inaccurate data
Businesses in Durham Region could be get-
ting tax bills in the next few months that con-
tain incorrect information either on what they
owe or could be getting back.
Regional finance commissioner Jim Clapp
told the finance committee Wednesday, "The
data isn't going to be 100 per cent accurate. It's
the best we can get it. I know you'll get calls"
Like many municipalities in Ontario,
Durham is using the provincial On -Line Prop-
erty Tax Analysis (OPTA) computer system to
prepare tax bills. Ho::•c:'cr, there have been re-
peated problems with the system that have de-
layed the issuing of tax bills to commercial, in-
dustrial and multi -residential properties, Mr.
Clapp says.
Also delaying tax bills was provincial legis-
lation passed late last year capping property re-
assessment -related tax increases for commer-
cial, industrial and multi -residential properties
to 10 per cent in 1998 and five per cent in both
1999 and 2000.
the Province, Durham officials discovered in-
correct information.
Some of the information included decisions
made by the Assessment Review Board which
was not reflected in the new amount owed by a
business.
Mr. Clapp noted that while trying to correct
the information, computer programming prob-
lems were also discovered.
Municipalities using the OPTA computer
system have been given a deadline of Friday,
Oct. 15 by the Province to forward property tax
information. Provincial staff will take the infor-
mation to prepare a CD municipalities will use
for tax billing.
Mr. Clapp reported to the finance committee
and Regional council, "Although all efforts are
being and will continue to be undertaken to re-
solve as many discrepancies as possible, there
are no guarantees that the data used for billing
purposes will be totally accurate at the time of
the actual cut-off for capping purposes.,,

The Dunmoore Park Commu-
nity Association was formed
only weeks ago and has about 20
members, says Mr. Bess. Its goal
right now is to inform people
about the pipeline project and to
help organize a community re-
sponse. The group has circulated
about 1,000 flyers in the south
Whites/Rosebank area to let res-
idents know about Wednesday's
meeting. Each flyer outlines con-
cerns about the pipeline project,
which include:
- traffic congestion from con-
struction vehicles using Whites
Road for a period that could ex-
tend to three years.
- safety problems related to con-
struction vehicles and increased
traffic on Whites Road;
• safety problems related to the
regular delivery by tanker truck
of chemicals to the water pump-
ing station;
- loss of existing recreation facil-
ities and parkland if either of the
Petticoat Creek or Dunmoore
Park sites is chosen:
- air pollution from diesel gener-
ators and a smoke stack at the
pumping station;
Mr. Bess urges residents to at-
tend the meeting to find out
about the project, and to get in-
volved and make their views
known if they have concerns.
-We realize this is a govern-
ment of Ontario decision and re -
alistically we probably won't get

That's why we're asking for the
input of all our area residents.
Pickering council passed a
resolution in 1997 opposing the
York pipeline project.
York Region has committed
to drawing up a 'community
benefits agreement' with Picker-
ing which will detail the com-
pensation York will grant to
Pickering in exchange for the
Town's support of the pipeline

Festival of Trees promises Christmas magic
This will be a special Christmas
season for the Ajax and Pickering
Health Centre as the hospital holds
its first West Durham Festival of
Trees.
The four-day festival taking place
Nov. 25 to 28 at the Pickering Recre-
ation Complex, 1867 Valley Farm
Rd., will feature a spectacular dis-
play of designer -decorated Christ-
mas trees in a magical winter won-
derland setting.
This year's theme will be 'Magic
in the Making'. A variety of special
events and entertainment will offer
something for every member of the
family.
In addition to the main festival,
there will also be special, ticketed
events, including a `One Magic
Night' black tie gala Thursday, Nov.
25; a `Mistletoe Lunch' business lun-
cheon with a difference Friday, Nov.
26; `The Jingle Bell Jam' casual
Christmas party Saturday, Nov. 27;
and `The North Pole Pyjama Picnic'
for kids up to eight years old on Sun-
day, Nov. 28.
As well, there will be a `Family
Day at the Festival' featuring special
entertainment on all four days.
Proceeds from the festival will
support the purchase of the recently -
installed CT scanner at the hospital,
which serves patients from Whitby,
Ajax, Pickering and the surrounding
communities.
For more information on festival
events, to purchase special event
tickets, or for information on festival
sponsorship, call 683-2320, ext.

Jessica Topham turned out recently to help the Ajax
and Pickering Health Centre kick off its Magic in the
Making West Durham Festival of Trees with the help
of Santa Claus. The four-day winter festival has been
organized in support of the hospital fouridation.
vious resolutions confirming a
commitment to a 'Durham only'
waste management policy.
The resolution passed by
council also states Pickering
"finds it undesirable to locate
waste management facilities in
areas (that are) adjacent to and/or
negatively impact residential
neighbourhoods, and therefore
intends to place additional loca-
tional restrictions on such facili-
ties through Official Plan policy
and zoning bylaw standards."
Staff were directed to report
back to council by the end of Jan-

recommendations.

Family's destiny always in farming
Father's advice `goes a long way', admit fourth-generation farmers
BY LINDA WHITE
Staff Writer
Their roots in the community
run deep.
And though fourth-generation
farmers in the O'Connor family are
proud of a reputation their forefa-
thers carved out through honest
work, they are just as committed in
their desire to carve out a future of
their own.
They're doing that by keeping
pace with technological advances
and setting new standards — all
without forfeiting those very quali-
ties that brought them to where
they are today.
"I think a strong reputation goes
pretty far in any business. With it
comes trust and loyalty," explains
Sean O'Connor, who is taking over
the reigns at O'Connor Land and
Cattle Co. along with brother Kelly
— albeit under the guiding hand of
their father Maurice, who is now
semi -retired.
The family has been located
since 1832 on Maplehurst Farm —
a landmark with its solid stone
house and red barns — on Ross -
land Road at Lakeridge Road.
Of its 250 acres, 150 are located
on the eastern side of Lakeridge
Road, the Ajax-%%hitby border that
divided the farm when it was con-
structed in 1973. Another 700 acres
are rented throughout Durham Re-
gion. _
Some might argue that farming
is in the O'Connor blood, as at least
one member of each generation has
embraced the demanding life and
made advances.
"When we were young, we
knew we were destined to farm;'
33 -year-old Sean says of his deci-
sion and that of his brother Kelly,
JASON LIEBRF,GTS/News Advertiser photo
The O'Connor family farm has been a Durham landmark since it
was established in 1832. From left, third -generation farmer Mau-
rice O'Connor, is now semi -retired, handing the reigns over to
sons Sean and Kelly.
31, to continue the family tradition.
Both studied agriculture at the
University of Guelph, and though
each spent a bit of time away from
the farm, "we both decided it was
best for us to come back to the farm
and be part of it;' Sean recalls.
While growing up on the farm,
daily chores were a way of life.
"The older we got, the more re-
sponsibility there was, and the
more we were involved in day-to-
day decisions and plans for the fu-
ture;" says Sean. "77here was al-
ways an opportunity to be part of it,
but if you felt you excelled else-
where, you took that path:'
Certainly, the path Sean and
Kelly chose has changed quite dra-
matically even since they were
boys. They can now milk 14 cows
at one time, for instance, and ex-
pect to one day introduce robotic
milkers.
Still, Sean attributes the "quality
of feed and caring of the animals"
as the most important factors in
milk production. The farm pro-
duces 9,400 kilograms of milk
every year.
The herd of 350 Holsteins are
fed with crops from the farm, the
remainder of which is sold. Sean
and Kelly now call on the expertise
of crop consultants 10 make sure
we're doing everything right'.
Three years ago, the O'Connors
introduced Wagyus — Japanese
beef cows - to their operation and
now have 70. The breed is "fairly
new to North America." notes Sean,
who believes "quality of beef' sets
Wagyus apart from other beef cat-
tle. "Some call it white tablecloth
dining;' he explains.
The computer is also becoming
an important cog in the operation
,if the farm, which exports live -
;tock and embryos to 18 countries.
"We use it as much as we can;'
Sean says of the computer, pointing
to its use in inventory and account-
ing.
Despite advances, one thing re-
mains constant: "It's a lot of hard
work and is very demanding:' ad-
mits Sean, who believes it's impor-
tant to get away from the farm to
rejuvenate. "With livestock, there's
always something that could hap-
pen day or night. A cow could be
calving at 2 a.m. and could need
help"
The O'Connors also credit
"good help" for their success. They
regularly host 'farmer trainees'
from various countries for periods
of three months to one year and
usually have three to four people
working for them. Several uncles
who are veterinanans have also
played important roles.
And while Sean and Kcllv keep
an eye on ongoing research, they
credit their father with "advice that
goes a long way. When you're
young, you think you know every-
thing;' laughs Sean.
"My father has been a great ben-
efit to us. He has given us a lot of
assistance and advice:"
O'Connor family's roots run deep
It all began in County Cork Ireland in 1831
The history of the O'Connor
family hero began with Denis
O'Connor, who set sail from
County Cork, Ireland for Upper
Canada about 1831, along with
a friend named George O'Leary.
He worked for Quaker fami-
lies before acquiring a year later
the farm that still boasts his
name on Rossland Road at Lak-
eridge Road.
He married Mr. O'Leary's
sister Mary in 1836 and they
had three children, including
Denis, who became Archbishop
of Toronto and after whom
Archbishop Denis O'Connor
Catholic High School in Ajax is
named.
In 1847, the younger Denis
O'Connor married Bridget O'-
Callaghan, whose family came
from Whitchurch, Ireland.
Founding members of St. Fran-
cis de Sales Catholic Church in
Pickering Village, they had 10
children in the stone house that
was built in 1845 and still stands
on the family farm.
The family enjoyed some
prosperous years. The Crimean
War from 1853 to 1856 and the
American Civil War from 1861
to 1865 caused a world shortage
of wheat, while The Reciprocity
Treaty between Canada and the
U.S. from 1854 to 1867 permit-
ted free trade between the two
countries.
The price for Canadian
wheat doubled and tripled in
that time. But the end of the
treaty and the arrival of a wheat
midge that resulted in lower
crop yields spelled the end of
the boom.
At about that time, however,
Canadian barley was growing in
popularity, while the demand
for hay also increased. In 1888,
the farm was turned over to
George, who had married Anne
Conlon in 1886.
Farm life was becoming eas-
ier by the end of the century, as
ploughs, harrows, cultivators
and mowing machines began to
appear in the 1870s and steam -
powered threshers - which
moved from farm to farm at har-
vest time - were introduced in
the 1890s.
George and Anne had six
children and operated a 'mixed'
farm, which was later taken over
by son Arthur.
In 1914, the Campbellford,
Lake Ontario and Western Rail-
way purchased land on the
northeast limit of the O'Connor
lot. Leased for 999 years by the
Canadian Pacific Railway, the
line tats from Perth in the east,
north to Brougham, and west to
Agincourt, transporting goods -
including O'Connor cattle - to
Toronto.
Arthur married Margaret
Dalton in 1916. Their first-born,
Marguerite, was the last O'Con-
nor born in the house built by
her great-grandfather. Her nine
siblings - including Maurice,
who continues to play a role in
the farm with two of his six sons
- were born in hospital.
By this time, a herd of dairy
cows had been established. And
other changes were on their
way: electricity was installed in
the barns in the late 1930s and
soon after in the house, which
continued to be heated by a fire-
place until a furnace was in-
stalled in the mid-1950s.
Arthur and Margaret were
active in their community. The
first chairman of the then Pick-
ering Separate School Board,
Arthur was also a member of the
St. Vincent de Paul Society and
the Knights of Columbus, while
Margaret was a charter member
of the Catholic Women's
League, which was formed in
1951.
In the mid-1950s, Maurice,
his brother Morgan and other
dairymen helped establish the
Ajax Dairy on Commercial Av-
enue, which was bought out by
Ideal Dairy of Oshawa in 1963.
When the Ministry of Trans-
portation established Lakeridge
Road in 1973, it split the O'-
Connor farm, which continues
to grow barley and wheat, as
well as corn, alfalfa and soya
beans.
It continues to produce milk
with its herd of Holsteins, and in
more recent years, brought into
the operation Wagyus - a Japan-
ese beef cow.
CD-ROM
helps Durham
pupils plot
career paths
Helping students chart a course
through high school and into the
world of work is the goal behind a
new resource package being
launched by the region's two
school boards Tuesday, Oct. 19.
Designed for pupils in Grades
7 to 10, A Guide to Jumpstarting
Your Job Trek includes an interac-
tive CD-ROM and a workbook to
help students determine their path
through secondary school.
"The interactive CD will pro-
vide students with an excellent
opportunity to receive immediate
educational feedback on future
post -secondary destinations such
as work. apprenticeships, college
and university:" notes Durham
Catholic District School Board di-
rector Grant Andrews.
The package, developed
through a partnership among the
separate board, the Durham Dis-
trict School Board, Durham Col-
lege and Human Resources De-
velopment Canada, will outline
the ministry's high school reforms
and provide students with infor-
mation about the selection of
courses under the new streamed
system introduced this fall.
The CD will serve as an infor-
mation tool for students that out-
lines the consequences of their
course selections throughout high
school and will also include links
to Internet sites featuring infor-
mation about post -secondary edu-
cation and employment options.
1t is a critically important re-
source for the successful imple-
mentation of both the new
Teacher Adviser Groups (TAGS)
and the Annual Education Plans
as mandated for September 1999
by the Ministry of Education;'
says public board director Grant
Yeo.
Under the Province's education
reforms, every student in Grade 9
to 12 is required to prepare an an-
nual education plan to set acade-
mic goals and make course selec-
tions each year. Those plans will
be prepared with the assistance of
teacher advisers, who will moni-
tor a student's academic progress
and will act as a key school con-
tact for parents.
Development of the resource
package was funded through an
$83,000 grant from the Education
Ministry, the boards report.
And, the Durham partnership
has received a second grant of
$125,000 to develop a similar re-
source package for students in
Grades 10 to 12.
Copies of the resource package
will be provided to all school
boards across the province, in-
cluding the Kawartha Pine Ridge
District School Board and the Pe-
terborough Victoria Northumber-
land Clarington Catholic District
School Board.
Oct. 19's CD launch is being
held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the
public board headquarters, 400
Taunton Rd. E. in Whitby.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October
October is Breast Cancer Awareness
Month. This year, nearly 19,000 Canadian
women will be diagnosed with breast can-
cer. About 5,400 will die of it. This means
that, on average, 15 women die of breast
cancer every day.
Breast Cancer is the most commonly
diagnosed cancer in women and second
only to lung cancer as the leading cause of
cancer -related deaths among women.
The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS)
is a leader in the fight against breast cancer,
providing $2 million of funding nationally
I.I"I_1
for breast cancer research each year. The
society also spreads important health mes-
sages to women about early detection and
how they can reduce their risk of breast can-
cer. In addition, the Society provides many
services for women and men diagnosed
with breast cancer, including information,
and emotional and practical support.
More information about breast can-
cer and breast health can be obtained by
calling the CCS at (905) 686-1516 or the
Cancer Information Service at 1-888- 939-
3333.

Chamomile oil for calm control

Aromatherapy is unlike
" heayv-duh•" therapy, where suf-
fering is part of your recovery. In
aromatherapy, enjoyment is part of
the aromatic treatment!
True aromatherapy is both an
art and a science, using pure essen-
tial oils for healing. Each oil carries
the distinctive "personality" of the
plant and has a characteristic, pro-
found effect on the bodv, the mind,
and the emotions.
Let's look at Chamomile, for
example. The chamomile plant
likes light. It has feathery leaves
and tinv, daisy -like flowers. Despite
its sweet, delicate appearance, it is
truly hardy, growing abundantly
on roadsides and fields in sandy,
some%vhat poor, conditions. Seen
this way, chamomile is "strength in
adversity".
Chamomile oil can help
relieve stress of anv kind, but it is
especially good for unresolved con-
flicts and working under impossi-
ble circum-
stances. In this
condition, our
wants and needs
become so
intense that we
become desper-
ate to succeed, to
break free, or to
get what we
want. If not sat-
isfied, we can
become tense,
irritable, push-
ing ourselves too
hard, and trying
to "over control"
circumstances
and people
around us. We
may turn our
frustration
inwards, criticiz-
ing ourselves for
being weak,
childish, or
inept.

aluable immune boosting tips
when it comes to your diet
Think of your immune sys-
tem as your own personal army -
- when the troops are plentiful
they will fight off any bacteria,
virus, or fungus that comes in its
path. When they are reduced in
numbers they won't be able to
fight off those offending bacteria,
viruses and fungi. The big ques-
tion is: How do you keep an
abundant army always ready to
attack?
Your diet is most important.
Did you know that in numerous
studies, it was found that ingest-
ing 100 grams of glucose, fruc-
tose, sucrose, honey or orange
juice significantly reduced
immune system function within
less than 30 minutes and resulted
in a 50 percent reduction in
immune function two hours after
ingestion. In addition, this reduc-
tion in immune function lasts
more than five hours (The
American journal of Clinical
Nutrition, 1973, vol. 26).
Packaged, devitalized foods
made with white flour, white
sugar, and hydrogenated fats,
also contribute to lowering
immune function. Therefore, to
maintain a strong army you need
to concentrate your diet around
these five areas:
1. Quality Protein lean
chicken, fish, turkey.
2. Good Fats - flax oil, cold
pressed olive or canola oil, fresh
nuts and seeds and fish are your
best sources.
3. Vegetables - the darker the
green, yellow, red or orange the
better
4. Fruits - whole fruits are
better than juices
S. 100% Whole grain foods
and legumes - bread, rice, pasta,
dried beans, peas and lentils
_ Specific nutrients known to
increase your immunity are the
antioxidant vitamins - A, C, and
E. Dosages will vary according to
your weight as well as your
lifestyle factors. The minerals
selenium and zinc are also two
very important players in boost-
ing your immune system as they
are involved in many enzyme
systems in the body which help
patrol for invaders.
Unfortunately the soils in
Ontario are very depleted of sele-
nium; therefore, this mineral
rarely gets into our food supply
in sufficient quantities.

Supplementation 15 often
required. The popular herb,
Echinacea, is excellent to
take either preventively or
at the first sign of a cold.
Other excellent herbal
immune boosters include
goldenseal, which is con-
sidered nature's natural
antibiotic, astragalus, and
cat's claw`-.

Massage Therapy and Muscle Contractures
Do your shoulders
feel sore after a day on
the computer? After sit-
ting for a long time do
you get shooting pains
from your buttock to
your knee or ankle? If
your job requires you to
stand for long periods, is
your lower back stiff and
sore at the end of the
dav? If so, read on, this
article may be the first
step to pain relief.
When a muscle is put
into an incorrect position
for extended periods of
time, it becomes "accus-
tomed" to this new posi-
tion and mistakenly
decides that this new
position is correct. For
example, someone who
works on a computer all
day may find that they
have a stiff neck which no
longer has the same
range of flexibility as
before. This is caused by
a shortening of the mus-
cles in the neck and
shoulders which makes
movement more difficult.
The medical term for this
condition (isn't there one
for everything?), is mus-
cle contracture.
The term "muscle
contracture" is a general
term for the shortening of
any muscle in the body
and may be characterized
by pain, discomfort, pins
and needles, or a number
of other sensations.
Fortunately, this condi-
tion can be relieved by a
Registered Massage
Therapist who will apply
several pain-free Swedish
massage techniques
proven effective for this
problem.
You may wonder how
a massage could provide
any lasting effects.
Simply stated, the thera-
pist works to lengthen
the contracted muscle,
increase the range of
movement of the local
joint, increase circulation
to the affected area, and
strengthen the opposing
muscles in order to pre-
vent further damage.
That being said, it also
feels great!
It has been document-
ed that massage therapy
should be the treatment
of choice for most cases
of muscle contracture.
Because of its wonderful
effect on multiple body
systems, this therapy is
extremely effective in
providing both long term
relief for this condition.
Your massage treatment
will include manipula-
tion techniques to relax
the muscles, stretches to
lengthen them, and may

October is National
Orthodontic Health Month
The American Association
of Orthodontists recommends all
children have an orthodontic
examination no later than age 7.
This is to help determine
which children may need ortho-
dontic treatment such as wearing
braces or a retainer. Listed below
are some of the ways in which
early orthodontic treatment may
help.
Early Treatment may help to:
• guide proper growth of the
jaw
• % iden a narrow jaw so new
adult teeth have room to grow
• reduce or eliminate the
need for jaw surgery
• prevent the risk of damage
to teeth that are sticking out
• correct harmful thumb
sucking or mouth breathing habits
• improve appearance and
help your children feel better about
themselves
• simplify treatment and
shorten the length of time braces
need to be worn
• reduce the chance of teeth
shifting after braces are removed
• make space for adult teeth
to grow and not get trapped in the
bone
• improve speech develop-
ment
• help the mouth close prop-
erly
• prevent or reduce jaw prob-
lems from developing
• obtain better cooperation
during treatment before the
'teenage' years.
REMEMBER, ALL KIDS
SHOULD HAVE AN ORTHO-
DONTIC EVALUATION NO
LATER THAN AGE 7.

tified specialist in orthodontics and

We need a millennium radiation card
How much radiation have
you received during your life-
time from medical X-rays'? I
doubt anv reader could answer
that'q uest ion. But as we enter the
millennium, do we need a radia-
tion card?
And why would anyone be so
stupid a% to try to fool a nuclear
engineer"
Twenty year% ago I uncov-
ered a massive radiation cover-
up. I had always been concerned
about the amount of needles ra-
diation patients were receiving.
So I decided to do some inves-
tigative reporting.
I called medical and dental
offices and asked. -When did a
government inspector last check
your X-ra,, equipment?" Sonic
said it hadn't been checked for
10 yeah or more. One dentist
told me 22 years! And no one
seemed concerned about it.
Then I asked X-ray operators,
-How much radiation do pa-
tients receive from certain X-ray
pr1cedures'1- The technicians
usually didn't know. Most radi-
ologists couldn't even tell me
how much radiation was re-
ceived from even routine exami-
nations. Or said they knew at
one time but had forgotten. Or
that I should ask someone at a
university hospital.
But then I got lucky. An ex-
plosive document landed on my
desk. It was a letter from the Ra-
diation Protection Branch. It's
contents were hard to believe.
The document stated patient%
in one hospital may receive 60
limes the radiation exposure
o given to a patient in another hos-
pital. It was an incredible differ-
ence and the figures were fright-
ening.
For instance, experts claim
lifetime exposure should not ex-
ceed 50 R (Roentgens). Yet
some patients had been receiv-
ing twice this dose from a single
set of X-rays due to faulty ma-
chines and inexperienced opera-
tors.
The more I delved into this
matter the worse it became.
Some radiologists were ignoring
basic precautions during long X -

ray studies such as fluoroscopy.
Timing devices which had bro-
ken had not been repaired. Or
the radiation dosage of old ma-
chines had been cranked up to
obtain a better picture. And the
news about private X-ray ma-
chines was even worse.
I wrote a three-part series
blasting the government and ra-
diologists for allowing this situa-
tion to continue. That some pa-
tienL% had received monstrous
amount_% of radiation bordered
on criminal negligence. And
most would never know about it!
News about my upcoming
column was leaked to the gov-
ernment. What a coincidence my
column and the report outlining
the hazards of radiation were
both published the same day!
And suddenly money was found
to look into this matter.
I didn't receive a bouquet of
roses for these columns. Radiol-
ogists accused me of needlessly
worrying patients, claiming pa-
tients who needed X-rays to di-
agnose cancer might not get
them. I considered that possibil-
ity. But it would have been irre-
sponsible not to alert people to
an unseen hazard.
1 doubt things have changed
as I read about the experience of
Esarn Hussein, a nuclear engi-
neer at the University of New
Brunswick.
Hussein needed X-rays to
help diagnose the cause of his
back pain. He asked the techni-
cian the obvious question. How
much radiation would he re-
ceive'? The reply, '"Iiie same as
he would get from a two-hour
plane trip:' Hussein later calcu-
lated the amount he was to re-
ceive takes 1,120 flights to
match!
Hussein then asked the radi-
ologist for the answer. He didn't
know. But later called to say he
had received 2.8 roentgens dur-
ing his back X-rays.
Hussein relates this ironic sit-
uation. His yearly radiation as a
nuclear engineer is monitored on
a badge. He receives only 0.1
roentgen. It would have taken
him 28 years to receive the same
amount of radiation working as a
nuclear engineer!
Today, 87 per cent of the pub-
lic's exposure to radiation comes
from medical X-rays. Yet there
are no laws that control or limit
the number of times patients are
exposed to X-rays. One doctor
may order several X-rays. An-
other consultant can add several
additional ones. And no one ever
keeps track of the cumulative
dose.
What a paradox! People vo-
ciferously picket nuclear instal-
lation sites. Yet these same poo -
pie will submit themselves and
their families to potentially dan-
gerous radiation without raising
the slightest murmur.
Dr. John W. Gofman, a world
authority on radiation hazards,
says -clear evidence now exists
there is no harmless dose of ion-
izing radiation"
He estimates during the next
30 years over two million can-
cers will occur from a combina-
tion of medical and dental X-
rays.
What is needed is a card that
monitors radiation exposure. We
can't do without X-rays. But we
can do without needless ones
and faulty equipment. Next
week, how to protect yourself
from excessive radiation.

Dy Peter Hughes
Evelyn Arbour is a Registered
Nutritionist at The Wellness
Connection in Ajax.
She is also someone who has
experienced change in her life
when it comes to losing weight by
changing her eating habits.
"I know how it feels physically
and emotionally to have a weight
problem and digestive disorders,"
she explains. "This experience
helps me to work with my clients so
they can achieve their goals."
Evelyn has designed a 4 step
program for her clients that is easy
to follow and has resulted in long
term results.
The first step is a 1 hour con-
sultation. She finds out what
you've been eating and how you've
been feeling. it's a time to learn
about good and bad eating habits
as well as the differences between
good and bad digestion.
Next ,you take home a ques-
tionnaire. This helps ,you to see
which systems you may be having
trouble with including digestion,
elimination and respiratory as well
as problems associated with vita-
min and mineral deficiencies.
Once this is done the next step
is to determine whether you need a
detoxification program.
"You may feel bloated all the
time, have bad breath or feel tired
all the time," says Evelyn.
"Detoxification is the body's natur-
al process of elimination or neutral-
izing of toxins via the liver, the kid-
neys, the urine, feces, exhalation
and perspiration."
This step of the program also
includes your eating plan based on

Durham Windows and Doors
brings mobile showroom
to your door
By Peter Hughes
Wayne Hutchison brings to the
replacement window and door
business a new and long overdue
feature. It's a Mobile Showroom
which just may be the only one in
Canada.
"The day is gone when you
carried some brochures and a
sample window to a customer's
home," explains Wayne. "So I
obtained a retired North York
Mobile Library truck and
installed interior walls along with
all of my window samples."
When you call Durham
Wnndows and Doors for a free
estimate, Wayne will show up at
your door with his Mobile
Showroom which you'll enter by
way of a sliding patio door.
Inside, displayed on the walls,
are the Tech Weld 2000 series of
vinyl windows which you're free
to operate and you'll discover the
many special features including
how they can be cleaned without
going outside.
"After being in this business
for 13 years, I can honestly sav
these are the finest windows on
the market," says Wayne. 'Thev're
triple sealed to reduce air leakage
and come with heavy duty hard-
ware."
If you desire, you can choose
the Low E Glass which filters out
the ultraviolet rays keeping your
home cooler in the summer and
eliminate fading of your curtains,
drapes and furniture.
All of the windows come with
a lifetime warranty and a 10 -year
guarantee on the installation.
Wayne would also like his cus-

the estimates personally, eliminat-
