The Durham Nuclear Health

The studies are part of a long-

cancer rates in communities sur-

the country.

GTSB gets rolling on transportation
A *proposal for the Greater Toronto Services.
Board to shelf all other work not directly related to
transportation and transit issues has itself been put
on hold.
At its meeting on Friday, board members decid-
ed developing a transportation and transit strategy
will be the "predominant priority" over the next
year. But, a motion that would stop all other work
was removed.
York Region Chairman Bill Fisch and Markham
Mayor Don Cousens proposed work on such initia-
tives as reviewing countryside and environmental
strategies be stopped. Their motion stated trans-
portation and transit are the core mandate of' the
GTSB and the hoard doesn't have enough staff to
work on a variety of other issues.
Durham Region Chairman Roger Anderson
agrees with focusing on transportation.
"Transportation is and should be the number -

one issue with the GTSB, no ifs, and or buts. Try
moving around Halton, Toronto or Durham, it's lit-
erally impossible," he says in an interview.
But, transportation can't be studied in isolation
and other work, such as countryside and environ-
mental strategy work, should continue, he says. "If
you don't study the countryside, the rural areas will
get nothing." He does, however, agree the GTSB is
straying from its mandate of transportation and
solving disputes among municipalities.
"Transportation isn't just the 401 and 404. There
are other ways of getting out of the city than just a
czar. That's why the Region started its own trans-
portation study:"

such as age• distance of residence from

The AECB is undertaking the sur-

lic interest in the issue, and to contro-
versial published reports of excess
cancer incidence and/or mortality near
nuclear facilities.
Ms. Pictrusiak noted the AECB
study will be able to examine cancer
incidence in Durham at a -more de-
fined level- than the regional health
department has been able to.
For example, the AECB will be able
to look at incidence as related to dis-
tance of residence from the station
while Durham has had to examine
rates by municipality.
"Pickering gives them a large
enough population and it is obviously
one (nuclear facility) that is of more
concern;" said Ms. Pictrusiak.
-We have made a plea to be in-
volved in the process as much as pos-

man, Durham Region Medical Officer
of Health Dr. Robert Kvle, write to the
