Board to shelf all other work not directly related to transportation and transit issues has itself been put on hold. At its meeting on Friday, board members decid- ed developing a transportation and transit strategy will be the "predominant priority" over the next year. But, a motion that would stop all other work was removed. York Region Chairman Bill Fisch and Markham Mayor Don Cousens proposed work on such initia- tives as reviewing countryside and environmental strategies be stopped. Their motion stated trans- portation and transit are the core mandate of' the GTSB and the hoard doesn't have enough staff to work on a variety of other issues. But, transportation can't be studied in isolation and other work, such as countryside and environ- mental strategy work, should continue, he says. "If you don't study the countryside, the rural areas will get nothing." He does, however, agree the GTSB is straying from its mandate of transportation and solving disputes among municipalities. For example, the AECB will be able to look at incidence as related to dis- tance of residence from the station while Durham has had to examine rates by municipality.
