Pickering council approved a 'detailed review' of the area at its meeting Tuesday. About 120 res- idents had jammed the Pickering council chamber at a public meeting in August to demand the study. "We've waited a long time for a waterfront to come together and we want to make sure now that it comes together and that it comes together the right way;" said Ward 2 local Councillor Mark Holland in bringing forward a NallOIfENT PROVE cau. w roman " vmL NOT of W D13004 Dn raaRww ! 239 Skdm Sk" p..e.r e..n, 4W oww"d AN" resolution for the review Tues- day. Coun. Holland's call for the study was supported at the meet- ing by delegations from Picker- ing -Ajax Citizens Together (PACT) for the Environment and the Pickering East Shore Com- munity Association (PESCA). PACT and PESCA are concerned a proposed townhouse develop- ment in the area will undermine plans for the future of the town's waterfront, including the Millen- nium Trail and Square projects. The study has been triggered by two development applications. Board of trade banCisamalgamation Ajax -Pickering merger `a winning proposition' BY MARIANNE TAKACS Staff Writer The Ajax -Pickering Board of Trade is throwing its weight be- hind efforts by the Town of Picker- ing to achieve an amalgamation with Ajax. Board general manager Lesley Whyte appeared before Pickering council Tuesday to offer the board's official endorsement of a request from Pickering to the Province to appoint a mediator to help arrange a merger with Ajax. As well, the board will release a policy paper this coming week ex- plaining why it supports amalga- mation, and is planning to take its case directly to area and provincial politicians year" says Ms. Whyte, noting that in addition to asking the two Town councils to take action on the issue, the board hired a researcher on contract to prepare its policy paper. In working to achieve amalga- mation, she explains, the board is simply reflecting the wishes of its approximately 600 members, who have been surveyed on the issue three times. "Every time we surveyed them the large majority returned an- swers saying `yes, we need to amalgamate and we definitely have to have more study', and they wanted the board of trade to act further on it." The paper won't provide examples of specific dollar savings that would result from amalgamation, ex- plains Ms. Whyte, because that's a job for a professional consulting firm. It proves amalgamation is a winning proposition for both `Amalgamation doesn't mean loss of identity', says Whyte towns." In the paper, the board offers 10 reasons merger makes sense for Ajax and Pickering: • reducing the cost of local govern- ment; • achieving savings through economies of scale; • achieving a higher profile and stronger voice for the amalgamat- ed municipality in the region, the Greater Toronto Area, the province, and internationally; • adaptation to provincewide mu- nicipal restructuring; • the opportunity to reinvest amal- gamation savings into the commu- nity-, • the demographic and economic similarity of the two towns; e adapting the municipal structure to reflect a community that's al- ready integrated in many ways; • creating a stronger single finan- cial entity out of two financially sound towns; e reducing damaging competition for investment dollars; • taking advantage of an opportuni- ty to overhaul municipal adminis- tration. "We'll do everything we can to get to the premier;' Ms. Whyte notes. Board members will also be taking their pitch to Regional council and other Durham munici- palities. Ms. Whyte admits the greatest resistance might come from local residents who fear losing their communities' identities in the new, combined municipality of Ajax and Pickering. Fines, penalties must be tightened up School bus sign obedience critical It's surely a disaster just waiting to happen. An absent-minded diner, not paying attention or worse, defying the flashing lights and protruding 'Stop' sign, whips past a school bus. And ploughs right into a child, killing him instantly. Despite the fact there have been no serious accidents or injuries with Durham school buses since 1992, Laid- law Transit and Durham Regional Po- lice officials say a tragic scenario is in- evitablc unless careless drivers start paying attention. Drivers coming from both directions must stop well back of school buses flashing their lights and must remain stopped, not just rolling slowly, but stopped, until those lights stop flashing. Judy Petsinis, driver development and safety officer for Laidlaw, which operates many school buttes in Durham, says non-compliance with bus stop sig- nals is "a daily problem. The general public has to wake up" Bus drivers have lately been sending four or five complaints a day to police. In response to the problem, the police launched Operation Bus Watch this past January. The program's intention is to have bus drivers, crossing guards and witnesses report as much information as Areas where repeat violations occur stretch across the entire region. Inter- sections in Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Bowmanville and Goodwood have been identified and rated as the worst five for stop -signal violators. Once identified, police have an officer sit near the inter- section to keep an eye out for violators. So far. Constable John Hinds of the police force traffic management unit says he believes the letters and other en- forcement tactics arc working. But a handful of daily complaints constantly coming in suggests not everyone is get- ting the message. While bus drivers are encouraged by the program and its attempt to stamp out the problem, the culprits who disre- gard the law must be made to pay the price. Complaints must be followed up and repeat offenders should be ticketed and lose demerit points. An extra effort should be made when drivers receive their licences to point out all the rules surrounding school bus stops. Everyone must know exactly how vital this issue is. It's a streak we would all dearly love to see maintained well into the next mil- lennium. About a young woman searching for the birth mother she's never known, the birth mother who gave her up for adoption shortly after she entered the world. Imagine the pain that mother must have felt then, the heartache she may a have endured since, the emotional scars she might still bear today, almost 30 years after giving birth to her baby Imagine the elation the biological mother and daughter might feel today if they were reunited, if they got to know each other for the first time, if the birth mother had a chance to meet the grandchildren she doesn't even know exist. And, it's clear the biologicall moth- er and her daughter want a reunion. Both have been in touch with the agency most likely to bring them to- gether, but with no success. So, the daughter called the News Advertiser about a week ago from her Ottawa -area home in her most recent effort to get in touch with her birth mother. She related her story and asked Blake Purdy News Editor if there was anything we could do to help. She followed the advice she was given and her package arrived the other day, including the letter to the editor which appears on this page. A little background: "Tracey Lynn' was born lune 30, 1970 at Oshawa General Hospital to a 17 -year-old woman with a last name that began with `M'. When she was only a couple of months old, 'Tracey Lynn' was put in the care of a foster family some- where in Durham. A few months later, she was adopted by an Ajax family who raised her. 'Tracey Lynn' lived in Ajax for 25 years until she moved east in 1995. So, she's hundreds of miles away now. But, a big part of her remains right here. The family who raised her will stay in her heart forever — the adoptive parents she calls "mom and dad", and their offspring, "my brother and sister". And, there's another part of 'Tracey Lynn' who might still be here in Durham. "I've always wanted to know her, says the young woman searching for her birth mother. In 1991, she contacted the Oshawa CAS for the non -identifying back- ground information on my adoptive family that she is entitled to have. That same year, I contacted the Oshawa CAS again for any updated information and was told there was none available to me. I registered with the ADR in March of 1999. Of course, there was an immediate match as my birth mother had registered her wishes for a reunion almost 10 years before. However, by this time she was not at the address she had provided in 1989. NEWS ADVERTISER SUNDAY E Teens' deaths inspire drunk -driving video p Students' `powerful' tribute a `very strong message to everyone about safety' BY KEITH GILLIGAN StafJ'Writer Tears flowed in the Durham council chambers Wednesday as Region politicians, staff and the public watched an emotionally - charged video about the deaths of two Whitby teenagers. Made by seven Whitby high school students, the video exam- ines the after-effects of traffic acci- dents and includes interviews with family and friends of Amanda Heron and Jennifer Crook. The deaths of Amanda, Jennifer Berryand Michelle Berry of Brooklin were the inspiration for the video, Durham Regional Police Inspector Greg Reid told councillors. Jennifer died in April of this year when she was struck by a van while trying to cross Taunton Road in Hampton. Amanda was killed in June of 1998 in an alcohol-related accident on Brawley Road north of Brook - lin. Michelle died in 1997 when the driver of a vehicle she was a pas- senger in fell asleep and the car hit a bridge support. Amanda and Michelle were both students at Sinclair Secondary School, where Insp. Reid is a mem- ber of the school's community council. Each year, Durham Regional Police make drinking and driving presentations at high schools around prom time, using videos from Mothers Against Drunk Dri- ving, Students Against Drunk Dri- ving and Toronto Police. 'As a result of these tragic deaths, we believed it was an op- portune time to create a drinking and driving video locally that would greatly impact our students and their families:' Insp. Reid said. A member of the Whitby Com- munity Police Office, Insp. Reid said students from each of the four Whitby high schools were involved in the project. Participating from Father Leo J. Austin Catholic Secondary School i were Matthew Gillespie and Heather Lampa; Paulette Guay and Cathy Smits represented Sinclair; Kerri Godfrey and Aaron Hess are from Anderson Collegiate Voca- tional Institute; and Sarah Franko- Thompson is from Henry Street High School. The video was completed in June, Insp. Reid said. `"lite students have created a video that far exceeded our expec- tations. It is most powerful with a very strong message to everyone about safety" Several councillors and staff were in tears following the video. A copy of the video was sent to each high school in Durham Re- gion "in time for their prom:' Insp. t Reid said. Jennifer's father Paul told Re- gional council, "Nothing was scripted in the video. The youth put it together" so it's representative of .youth investing in youth. "I'm honoured the video has reached across Ontario;' he added. Noting there are health and safety programs in workplaces, Mr. Crook said it only makes sense to wntroduce such initiatives else - here. "What's wrong with doing one in schools?" Mr. Crook credited the video makers with having such a tremen- dous impact on his family and oth- ers. "I want to thank everyone. It's one way to honour our daughter. If one life is saved, their lives and memories will live on" Region Chairman Roger Ander- son agreed. "Nothing that movie does will replace your loss. In 1999 there is only one dras- tic solution. Some pain special- ists are still living on Mars and you have to bring them down to earth with one hell of a jolt. A message they will never, never forget. A recent article in Canada's 'Medical Post' shows the extent of the problem. The title of the piece is 'Pain care not taught well in medical school.' It claims new graduates felt they were poorly prepared to treat sufferers of chronic pain. I'd say 'amen' to that. Dr. John Clark, President of the Canadian Pain Society, echoed their concern. He stated, "The consensus is that pain con- trol is not well taught in medical schools." Again, this isn't news to me. But it was Dr. Neil Hagen's comment that raised my antenna and ire. It again confirms how far out of touch doctors can be, even physicians who are treating can- cer patients. Dr. Hagen is medical leader of' Foothills Hospital Palliative Care Service in CalearN. He agreed with a variety of health-care surveys showing pain is very prevalent in our society. But then he added the public is to blame as it had not pushed for better pain control! I wish I still had the 30,000 letters I delivered to Monique Begin, the Federal Minister of Health, years ago. They were from Canadian and U.S. readers of my column de- ploring that a loved one, who suf- fered from terminal cancer, had died in agony and demanded doc- tors practice better pain control. How much more does the public have to push'? Dr. Hagen and many other physicians have it all wrong. It's not that patients haven't screamed enough. It's that doc- tors are not listening to their screaming. After all, studies show 80 per cent of cancer patients die in pain. Isn't it the role of doctors, not patients, to rectify this inhu- mane situation? Many readers know of my ef- forts to legalize heroin for termi- nal cancer patients. So I often receive calls from frustrated families askinL, me to help them. The malorit% tell me :i loved The Doctor Game W. Gifford --Jones M.D. one has insufferable pain and the doctor refuses to increase the dosage of narcotic. It's unbelievable how many tell me a loved one with metasta- tic cancer is receiving only Tylenol 3! And they ask where they can obtain heroin. Regrettably I have to tell them heroin is no longer available in Canada. Heroin was legalized in 1944 after six years of fighting oppo- nents who said it wasn't needed. Then when heroin became avail- able they did everything to prove me wrong. Prescribing heroin, unlike other narcotics, was surrounded by so much red tape it never got off the ground. Now due to lack of use, the pharmaceutical company respon- sible for heroin no longer imports it, We won a battle, but lost the war clue to a combination of hypocrisy, bullheadedness, arro- gance and vanity. And the only time the oppo- nents of this painkiller will real- ize their error is when they're dying in pain themselves. Last year the Gifford -Jones Foundation donated nearly half - a -million dollars to the Universi- ty of Toronto Medical School. The purpose was to establish a professorship in Pain Control and Palliative Care. I hope wealthy individuals will establish other professor- ships of this kind. How can a professorship help to decrease needless pain? Doc- tors must be taught a very basic principle in pain control. That it's important to prescribe painkillers at regular intervals. This keeps the painkiller ahead of the pain. All too uften it's the other way around when patients receive narcotics at irreg- ular intervals. But a new Professor in Pain Control won't quickly solve this problem. The insensitivity and egotism of some doctors will delay the success of strictly educational measures. I tell families who call me ask- ing for help that at the moment they have two choices. They either have to resign themselves to seeing a loved one suffer or take off the velvet glove. They must inform the doctor and hospital administrator they will be charged with malpractice for failing to provide adequate pain control. Sounds pretty drastic doesn't it. But after years of personal frustration I'm convinced only big 'headline news' will alert everyone to this problem: That a doctor and hospital have been found guilty for failing to provide adequate pain control and that millions of dollars has been awarded to the victim as a result. I don't know when or if this will happen. Families tend to forget the agony after the death of a loved one or fear the cost of legal ac- tion. But one day a rich family won't forget and will have their day in court. Hopefully doctors will never, never forget the head- lines. 0.7 J You can vs -rite m Dr. Gifft)rd- Jones c% KierK'.r Health Centre, 2511 UnitiersitN Aie. Toxins come from many sources - chemicals, air, water and food. We ingest new chemicals, use more drugs of all kinds, eat more sugar and refined foods, and daily abuse our bodies with various stimulants such as coffee, chocolate, tobacco and alcohol. It is no surprise that we are showing the effects of toxicity earlier and earlier in our lives. The incidence of many diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease has increased and toxicity plays a role. As well, arthritis, allergies, skin problems and obesity can also be attributed to toxicity. In fact, according to Dr. Elson Haas, M.D., Director of the Marin Clinic of Preventative Medicine and Health Education in San Rafael, California, "Many of the poisons (toxin) that we ingest or make are stored in the fatty tissues. Obesity is almost always associated with toxicity. When we lose weight, we reduce our fat and thereby our toxic load." In our bodies we have elimination channels for these toxins — the bowels, kidneys, lungs and skin. As well, the liver acts as an internal filter for toxins. Toxins will exit the body through these organs. If any of these organs become overwhelmed by toxicity, then resulting symptoms are as follows: intestinal gas, bloating, fatigue, yeast infections, bladder infections, frequent colds and flu, depression, fibromyalgia, aller- gies, eczema, psoriasis, headaches, sinus problems, muscle aches, joint pains.... The list go on. The bottom line is that our bodies were meant to be storage hous- es for these toxins. Dr. Elson Haas, M.D., states, " The modem diet with excess animal proteins, fats, caffeine, alcohol, and chemicals inhibits the optimum function of our cells and tissues. The cleansing of toxins and waste products will restore function and vitality." Detoxification can be achieved several ways - fasting, juicing, using herbs, and by simply changing your diet. They are all beneficial in reducing the toxic load in your body. The most impor- tant thing is to begin your regime ASAP and make cleansing a part of your lifestyle. Man is the crowning creation designed to speak. Most of us take speaking for granted. Some feel it necessary to verbalize every thought that comes into their head and there is a lot of chatter in the world. When it comes to public speaking, however, only a select few feel comfortable and con- fident. Self esteem issues emerge and can easily, be dealt with from a whole person approach. You want to put a candle in my ear? Are you crazy.? y Have you ever been troubled by any of the fol- lowing symptoms? If so, someone may have suggested you try ear candling. • Ear aches • Loss of Hearing • Excessive Ear Wax Tinnitus (buzzing) •Swimmer's Ear *Headaches •Sinus Problems *Itching in the ears •Cysts •Allergies •Sore Throats *Ringing in the ears • Dizziness If you have any of these symptoms, you may be interested in looking into an ancient and gentle tech- nique called Ear Candling (also known as Ear Coning). With the trend to natural healing growing in pop- ularity, Ear Candling has once again surfaced and become a popular practice. It is for those searching for a more natural way to alleviate head and upper respirato- ry pressure, improve their hearing or sense of smell or for general well being. There are good all natural candles used today made of unbleached natural cotton, dipped in 1009'0 beeswax infused with botanically certified essential oils. The oils are chosen according to their energies vital to the body for healing and provide anti-inflammatory, decongestant and soothing properties. A gentle massage with specially prepared oils on the neck and face is very enjoyable and sets the tone for the relaxation and cleans- ing to follow. The heat and low pressure created by the bunting candle gently seated in the ear forms a vacuum which regulates pressure in the sinus area and draws up ear- wax and impurities into the unburnt part of the candle. Many people remark on feeling pressure relief and a lighter feeling in the head area after the candling. Locally applied heat has the effect of stimulating periph- eral blood circulation which in turn strengthens the immune system and enhances the lymph circulation. The whole process is pleasant and relaxing. It is not uncommon for a client to remark that they could easily fall asleep while getting a treatment. There is a deep sense of well-being and relaxation. Some common positive effects of Ear Candling: • gentle removal of excess ear- wax build-up, fungus, bacteria, yeast, Candida, ear mites, worms or para- r1EEF sites • TIME . • soothing and relaxing release Of stress • • pressure regulation to head and ears • relief of ear and sinus irrita- tions ! stimulation of the ear reflex points • activation of circulation and drainage of the local lymphatic sys- tem Ear Candling sessions are now available at the Greenwood Holistic Health Care Centre given by Bille von Roeder, Certified Auricular Therapist. Two robbery unit detectives re- ceived commendations for collar- ing an armed bandit as he attempt- ed to carjack a vehicle with a child inside following a Pickering bank heist just before Christmas. And, two constables were praised for acts of heroism after possibly saving the life of a teenage stabbing victim and defusing a po- tentially explosive situation near an Ajax school late in 1998. They were among eight officers recognized at the Durham police annual awards night Friday. DDD Constable Katherine Denton was applauded for nabbing the murder suspect in downtown Ajax July 27, 1998 after a chase which began near Kirby when a couple was robbed of their car at knife- point. "Const. Denton used her driving skills and pinned the suspect's ve- hicle against a bridge. She then held him at gun -point in the vehicle until her backup arrived... Your home will look great with windows and doors from Norjo Enterprises and Slim -Line Your windows and doors are your best defense against the cold and heat. That's why using quality prod- ucts and hiring a professional installer is the best way to keep the cold in and heat out during the summer and the opposite during winter. Of course, now that spring is here, the former is of utmost impor- tance. That's why people are choos- ing Slim -Line products and having them installed by Norm Doucett of Norio Enterprises. For over 25 years, Norio has been the preferred choice of many homeowners in the Scarborough and Durham area. Norm specializes in a wide array of home renovation projects and does each job as if he were working on his own home. Right now he's taking book- ings for window replacements and door installations. He's especially excited about the line of steel entranceway doors from Slim -Line. "They're the best on the mar- ket and at very fair prices,' says Norm. If you want to see the doors for yourself, feel free to visit the Slim - Line showroom at 925 Brock Rd. S. in Pickering. 000 Two Oshawa constables who rescued a mother and two children from a burning house also won awards. "They performed their duties without hesitation or thought of their personal safety," said Staff Sgt. Good of the officers' actions on June 27, 1998. "The responding Oshawa Fire Department platoon chief advised officers on the scene that in his opinion, had it not been for the quick actions of constables (Ron) Kapuscinksi and (Bernard) Lecours the occupants of the premises would most certainly have perished;" he said. 000 Constable Ronald Leigh, unable to attend the awards night, is to re- ceive a commendation for his "as- tute observations-" in helping nab a group of fleeing suspects following an Uxbridge bank robbery last year. OD❑ The department also recognized eight officers for 30 years of ser- vice and 18 officers for 20 years of service. Two civilian employees and a member of the auxiliary were honoured for 20 vears and one civilian fir 30 year" Norm chose Slim Line because everything is made right in their factory and they stand 100% behind their products. 'If there are any problems, I can go diulecdy to the factory and they take nue. of me right on the spot,' says Norm. "I've seers a lot of other door and window products but those are the best to sell and install. Norm does all of the work himself and will visit your home for a fee consultation to discuss your needs and your particular budget . Norio Enterprises continues to be successful because of bop qty work at very competitive prices. Norm has made a point to keep his overhead low so he can pass on those savings to his customers. Fall is here and there's no better timer to get your vehicle ready for winter. If you have anv rust it will only get worse when attacked by the salt and slush that lies a few months ahead. That's why you should plan a visit to Three bears Autobody in Ajax. Their profes- sional staff will have your vehi- cle looking like new every sea- son of the year. The time is also right for great savings. Right now at Three Bears take advantage of their $200 off a complete paint and body job with coupon. "This is a perfect opportu- nity to get your vehicle repaired whether it's for rust or collision work," says Kevin of Three Bears. "Another reason not to delay is our 90 day, no - interest, no -payment plan OAC." You vehicle deserves the best. That means the best quali- ty paint and oven baked, high quality finish, the latest high tech equipment for accurate repairs and top technicians who know their business well and can make your vehicle look like new again. 4 While one of the professionals at Three Bears works to straighten a frame at left, another tapes up a vehicle before it is painted. And remember when it comes to insurance work, the choice is always yours where you take your vehicle. "Insurance compa-ues may suggest preferred shops giving the impression you have to take it there," says Kevin. "Well you don't. If there's a shop you want to take it to whether it's Three Bears or someplace else, the decision is yours and yours only." Additional services pro- vided include a free shuttle ser- vice as well as arranging a rental vehicle depending on your insurance coverage. Small to medium sired repairs and remodeling work that general contractors either don't have the time for, or don't consider lucrative enough to bother with, are what HANDYMAN CONNEC- TION does best. As the driving force behind the new HANDYMAN CON- NECTION, Neil is confident the residents of Durham Region will welcome his local crew of retired crafts- men and other experts with open arms. To tackle jobs in the Durham Region, Neil has recruited a talented team of craftspeople, many of whom are multi -talented. All our craftspeople have a minimum of ten years experience and many of the people have sev- eral crafts," Neil says. "It's time saving to have one per- son who can plaster and paint because you don't have to call on two people to get the job done " 1 Powsmals W, Pwsonais PERSONAL PRAYER to the Blessed VirginPrayer to the Blessed vIll (nev- er known to fail).
