However, those two issues weren't high on the list of residents' concerns. The majority wanted to know when the number of portables will destine. "It's an eyesore:' said Saugecn Drive resident Christine Cooke. "It's the ugliest thing I've ever seen ... Those kids deserve to be in a docent school:' Highview Road resident Paul Rolfe noted, "One portable is one too many. To have the same number of portables as classrooms in the school is just astounding" However, Mr. Yewchyn reported the numbers won't be reduced until the board opens a new high school in north Ajax in 2001. He said at least 13 portables will be removed from St. Mary that year, while another five will be taken away in 2003, reducing the total to ,roughly 20. '.Ideally what we'd like to do is provide permanent accommodation for our students:' said Mr. Yewchyn, who revealed the board is looking for land to build a new high school in the town. But Ward I Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner reported there's no serviced land available in Picker- ing and there won't be for about five to 10 years. So, he maintained the solution is to build a perrnartent addition to the 6chool. "An addition would solve our whole problem:' . But, the school board turned down titan idea earlier this year. In their home opener Sunday, the Pan- thers put forth their best 60 minutes of hockey in the young season, but were stymied by a hot Oshawa Legionaires goaltender in a 3-2 loss at the Pickering Recreation Complex. Forty-eight hours earlier, the Panthers played its contest at the College Weekend in Mississauga Friday and dropped a 2-1 game to the Aurora Tigers in a particularly sloppy effort. The winning goal for Aurora was inadvertently kicked into the net by a Panthers' player. The Pickering juniors threw everything but the kitchen sink at Oshawa Legionaires netminder Brett Lemon, including 44 shots, but were only able to connect for two goals in the loss in their inaugural home game of the 1999-2000 season. De- spite the setback. Panthers' coach Eric Ross was pleased by his charges' perfor- mance. -We've played eight exhibition games, as well as against Ajax and Aurora, and we've only played well in spurts: a period here and a period there. I was quite con- cerned with the effort. I challenged the kids to play three solid periods against Os- hawa and they did. It was the best three pe- riods we've played to date;' notes Ross. The Panthers outshot Oshawa by a wide 44-19 margin, but Lemon was the difference in net for Oshawa as the visitors dealt the Panthers their second loss in three league contests. Pickering opened regular -season play last Tuesday with a 5-5 tie in Ajax against the Axemen. "You have to give full marks to him;' says Ross of the Oshawa goalie. "He was outstanding in net. He stole two points from us" Bill Duncan and Mike Hanna scored for the Panthers against Oshawa. While disappointed with Friday's re- sult, Ross says the team's coaching staff is League Sarnia Sting training camp and welcomed their newest Panther in infant will likely assume the number -one goal- son Cameron Ross, weighing in at 9 lbs., tender position with Pickering... Panthers' 5 oz., born Friday, Sept. 3 at Markham - 4 head coach Eric Ross and his wife Lisa Stouffvilie* Hospital... willing to be patient with the 15 rookies on the Panthers' roster as they grow and de- velop into junior hockey players. "On Friday, we didn't play well enough to win. But, we have 15 kids who played minor hockey last year, so there's going to be a transition period. I don't want to let losing become acceptable, because it's not, but we can't continually have a negative attitude. Frankly, we have to let the kids develop.- The evelop"The Ione bright spot in Friday's loss to Aurora was the goaltending of Garrett McKinnon, a former Ajax -Pickering Raiders 'AAA' midget goaltender, who marked his junior debut with an "excep- tional" game against the Tigers, says Ross. Patrick O'Halloran scored the lone Pan- thers' goal against the Tigers. The Boyer Pontiac Panthers play two home games this coming weekend. They host the Oshawa Legionaires on Friday at the complex at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, the Vaughan Vipers come to Pickering for an 8:30 p.m. contest against the Panthers.
