St. Mary crowding draws

PICKERING — Concerns
about garbage, safety and the un-
sightly appearance of more than
three dozen portables at St. Mary
Catholic Secondary School domi-
nated thediscussion at a meeting
Thursday as neighbourhood resi-
dents urged officials to address
overcrowding and build another
high school in Pickering.

area resident Robert Smith told
more than 50 people in Pickering
council chambers during a public
information meeting to outline a
zoning bylaw amendment applica-
tion by the Durham Catholic Dis-
trict School Board.
"You have to do something

Board superintendent of support
services Walter Yewchyn said while
the board plans to re -paint the park-
ing kx to meet the Town's bylaw re-
quirements, it's asking for some lee-
way on the distance portables can
be placed from the edge of the prop-
erty.
However, those two issues
weren't high on the list of residents'
concerns. The majority wanted to
know when the number of portables
will destine.
"It's an eyesore:' said Saugecn
Drive resident Christine Cooke.
"It's the ugliest thing I've ever
seen ... Those kids deserve to be in a
docent school:'
Highview Road resident Paul
Rolfe noted, "One portable is one
too many. To have the same number
of portables as classrooms in the
school is just astounding"
However, Mr. Yewchyn reported
the numbers won't be reduced until
the board opens a new high school
in north Ajax in 2001.
He said at least 13 portables will
be removed from St. Mary that year,
while another five will be taken
away in 2003, reducing the total to
,roughly 20.
'.Ideally what we'd like to do is
provide permanent accommodation
for our students:' said Mr. Yewchyn,
who revealed the board is looking
for land to build a new high school
in the town.
But Ward I Regional Councillor
Maurice Brenner reported there's
no serviced land available in Picker-
ing and there won't be for about five
to 10 years.
So, he maintained the solution is
to build a perrnartent addition to the
6chool.
"An addition would solve our
whole problem:'
. But, the school board turned
down titan idea earlier this year.
Meanwhile, residents also ex-

Changes would give individ-

action against monopolies.
He'll continue to push an-
other of his private member's
bills, C-235, to protect inde-
pendent retailers from preda-
tory pricing, by amending the
Competition Act.
Mr. McTeaguc notes he
has support for strengthening
the Competition Act from
sources such as the Ontario
government, the Consumers'
Association of Canada and
the Canadian Federation of
Independent Business,
The MP admits "very lit-
tle" has been done to imple-
ment the recommendations
released in June 1998 by the
Liberal Committee on Gaso-
line Pricing in Canada, which
he chaired. The federal and
provincial governments are
reviewing the retail gas in-
dustry but he's not very opti-
mistic about the process.
"I don't hold much hope
for it because the federal gov-
ernment is using the same
players who are the prime ad-
visers to the oil industry."
But he says governments
will have to take notice of
problems related to lack of
competition in Canada be-
cause they will affect the
economy. He blames rising
gas prices for a recent in-
crease in the inflation rate,
and maintains gas prices are
hurting the province.

wall it profit any of us to gain
these 'great things' and lose our
soul, or what poor mathematical
judgment we have if we will trade
eternity for a mere 'three score and
ten' years.
So, we should let our grads face
the future with confidence. We
should develop within them these
traits: love, joy, peace, patience,
gentleness, goodness, faith, meek-
ness, and self-control. We should
ensure that they love God with all
their heart and mind; and their fel-
low human beings as themselves.
By so doing, we will eliminate all
the 'isms' that the human race
faces.
To those who ask -What will
our grads We in the figure?": The
answer is an unprecedented in -
creme of sinfulness and sensual ac-
ti"bes. gam. wed, strife, deteri-

centiousness and more.
Let us help our grads carate and
develop the vigilance and sober-
mindedness that is necessary to do-
tett the prowler on their path. That
enemy of our eternal joy goes
around as a roaring bon to devour
us, and he goes about it in a highly
deceptive way.
While our grads will be im-
mersed in their laboratories, space
stations, mansions or in other great
forms of entertainment and discov-
eries, let me just warn them to be
ready for the return of Jesus.

Pickering juniors lose close ones to Aurora, Oshawa
Panthers drop two games or wepkpni
BY AL RIVE7T
Sports Editor
PICKERING — Inconsistency is
plaguing the Pickering Boyer Pontiac Pan-
thers in the early stages of the OHA On-
tario Provincial Junior 'A' Hockey League
season.
In their home opener Sunday, the Pan-
thers put forth their best 60 minutes of
hockey in the young season, but were
stymied by a hot Oshawa Legionaires
goaltender in a 3-2 loss at the Pickering
Recreation Complex.
Forty-eight hours earlier, the Panthers
played its contest at the College Weekend
in Mississauga Friday and dropped a 2-1
game to the Aurora Tigers in a particularly
sloppy effort. The winning goal for Aurora
was inadvertently kicked into the net by a
Panthers' player.
The Pickering juniors threw everything
but the kitchen sink at Oshawa Legionaires
netminder Brett Lemon, including 44
shots, but were only able to connect for
two goals in the loss in their inaugural
home game of the 1999-2000 season. De-
spite the setback. Panthers' coach Eric
Ross was pleased by his charges' perfor-
mance.
-We've played eight exhibition games,
as well as against Ajax and Aurora, and
we've only played well in spurts: a period
here and a period there. I was quite con-
cerned with the effort. I challenged the
kids to play three solid periods against Os-
hawa and they did. It was the best three pe-
riods we've played to date;' notes Ross.
The Panthers outshot Oshawa by a
wide 44-19 margin, but Lemon was the
difference in net for Oshawa as the visitors
dealt the Panthers their second loss in
three league contests.
Pickering opened regular -season play
last Tuesday with a 5-5 tie in Ajax against
the Axemen.
"You have to give full marks to him;'
says Ross of the Oshawa goalie. "He was
outstanding in net. He stole two points
from us"
Bill Duncan and Mike Hanna scored for
the Panthers against Oshawa.
While disappointed with Friday's re-
sult, Ross says the team's coaching staff is

willing to be patient with the 15 rookies on
the Panthers' roster as they grow and de-
velop into junior hockey players.
"On Friday, we didn't play well enough
to win. But, we have 15 kids who played
minor hockey last year, so there's going to
be a transition period. I don't want to let
losing become acceptable, because it's not,
but we can't continually have a negative
attitude. Frankly, we have to let the kids
develop.-
The
evelop"The Ione bright spot in Friday's loss to
Aurora was the goaltending of Garrett
McKinnon, a former Ajax -Pickering
Raiders 'AAA' midget goaltender, who
marked his junior debut with an "excep-
tional" game against the Tigers, says
Ross.
Patrick O'Halloran scored the lone Pan-
thers' goal against the Tigers.
The Boyer Pontiac Panthers play two
home games this coming weekend. They
host the Oshawa Legionaires on Friday at
the complex at 7:30 p.m.
On Sunday, the Vaughan Vipers come to
Pickering for an 8:30 p.m. contest against
the Panthers.
