That's how organizers are de- scribing this year's Pickering Town Centre Mayors' Charity Classic at Cherry Downs Golf and Country Club in north Pick- ering Thursday. The fourth annual event - in support of the Ajax -Pickering and Health Centre's hospital founda- tion - was attended by a full slate of 144 golfers and raised $125.(100. That, added to the pre- vious three years' proceeds, brings the total amount raised for the hosp-tal to $410,000. At was phenomenal," says Shirley Freek of the hospital foundation. -.Not only was that the highest total we've ever raised, we also raised the most of any charity golf tournament in the GTA. It's wonderful that our hospital can pull off something of this magnitude and quality.- In uality"In the past, money raised through the Mayors' Charity Classic went for surgical equip- ment for the hospital's operating rooms. This year, the money raised will go toward a $1.2 -mil- lion state-of-the-art CT (comput- erized tomography) scanner which allows doctors to see in- side a patient's body within sec- onds. Regional council will de- cide this coming Wednesday if it should proceed with a $320,000 Durham Trans- portation Master Plan Study to determine ways to improve transportation systems in Durham over the short, medi- um and long term. Gene Chartier, manager of transportation engineering and planning for Durham's works department, said Tues- day the study will use a "holistic approach" to trans- portation issues, examining not only roads drivers use, but other transportation modes such as rail, bus and mitis transit. Speaking to a joint meet- ing of council's works and planning committees, Mr. Chartier said the purpose; of the study is to "establish in- frastructure and program pri- orities and develop support- ing policies." It's "important to look longer term" with transporta- tion issues, he said. That's especially true be- cause Durham's population is expected to more than double over the next two decades to top one million by 2021, Mr. Chartier noted in a written re- port. To handle the growth and ensure people and g(xxls move safely and efficiently, "A comprehensive plan out- lining the priority improve- ments and programs required to achieve this future trans- portation system is needed." The plan will establish in- frastructure and program pri- orities to 2021 and beyond, he said. For example, extension of Hwy. 407 into Durham is planned within the next cou- ple of years. Her arteries become more clogged with each passing year, which could ul- timately lead to a complete stoppage. A bypass operation is already under way, but it's a time-consuming, expen- sive proposition. Its benefits won't be felt at home just yet. The patient is Durham Region's transportation network. The arteries are the region's main thoroughfares which become less efficient each year with continued growth in the eight munici- palities. The bypass is Hwy. 407, but it won't be here for some time yet. So it is that Durham Regional Coun- cil is being asked to spend $320,000 on a two-year transportation study to deter- mine methods to improve the flow of traffic and efficient movement of goods. well into the next century. Durham councillors should consider the expense on a study, to map out the future of our regional transportation net- work. money well spent. But it's not just about roads. The study will also examine tail and bus transit across the region, an important component in a region which will con-. tinue to be home to a substantial com- muter population. By making decisions today, identify- ing important transit and transportation issues Durham residents will face in the new millennium, and by setting progres- sive policies, people and businesses from Pickering to Newcastle will be provided a climate in which they can continue to flourish. Gene Chartier, manager of trans- portation engineering and planning for Durham's works department, suggested to regional politicians this week that it's important for them to "look longer term" when it comes to transportation issues. Indeed. A new master plan for the region's transportation will clearly establish goals and map out methods to make sure people and goods are moving unimped- ed from east to west and back again. To me, his promises are like pie crusts, made to be broken' I did not trust him before and even less now. His about-face is too con- trived to be true. Regarding Pickering -Ajax - Let's solve merger dilemma at home Do we really want a faceless MPP deciding our fate? If nothing else, the percolating issue of amalgamation between Ajax and Pickering has provided the citizenry in these parts with great quotes from some of the players involved. Ajax Mayor Steve Parish was quite provocative in referring to Pickering as 'envious' of Ajax's innovative ap- proach to government. He suggested the primary motivation for those em- pire -building politicians in Pickering was a shot at lasting political glory. He also said this: "I don't think they're looking at the best interests of the community. I think they should be focused on giving Pickering good gov- ernmem instead of playing with maps:' Ouch! For his part, Pickering Mayor Wayne Arthurs stuck to the script. He talked about better government and saving tax dollars, etc. But rookie Pickering Councillor Mark Holland took a more direct, if ni- hilistic approach: "To sit back is wait- ing for disaster. We are the test. This is an opportunity for the (provincial) government to prove they back locally - driven solutions" Local solutions - which don't `tnec- L1Steve ely require complete amalgama- tion - are what will design our collec- Houston ttve future in Ajax and Pickering. As a Pickering resident, I don't Managing Editor share the enthusiasm of my elected councillors to amalgamate with Ajax. To me, it seems a purely political game For what it's worth, I think Coun. Holland is correct. It's simply not good enough, nor clever, to pretend the amalgamation issue won't come before Ajax and Pickering with an agenda driven by, well, outsiders. But I agree with the current - though still unofficial - consensus in Ajax that the people should decide in a municipal referendum. A clearer per- spective can be provided on the mood of the electorate, which could guide Ajax councillors accordingly. If I lived in Ajax, however, I'd want my local government to shape my fu- ture, not some faceless provincial min- ister whose sole connection to the town is the thick black ribbon of asphalt he uses en route to his Haliburton High- lands cottage. played by people with far more impor- tant agendas and ideas. But neither can I understand the ob- stinance of certain members of Ajax council, especially without benefit of any formal consultation with the elec- torate. To date, I hear what essentially amounts to 'Wo...because I said so!" I believe some sort of action has to be taken right here at home, even if it's initially only to seek public participa- tion in the discussion. Until then, I'll remain fearful of that faceless MPP passing through the area as he travels the 401. He may come up with a few ideas of his own. Uxbridge MPP Janet Ecker, she is a very astute politician who knows that she can't now treat the teach- ers the same way she dealt with people who required social assis- tance when she was Minister of Community and Social Services. Her attitude then was very differ- ent to people who had no real clout and who couldn't fight back. The teachers are a militant group so she j has to tread carefully. But I don't Z she has really changed; she is behaving like a good soldier and following Mr. Harris's lead. I un- derstand she has party leadership aspirations and possibly wants to be another Maggie Thatcher. Ray Sinclair, Pickering Candu reactors outstanding Canadian work To the editor; In the last paragraph of your re- cent editorial headlined 'GM move a vote of confidence', you com- ment on Canadian engineering ac- complishments, but you have strangely failed to mention the ex- cellent Candu reactors, a number of which are sitting at our doorstep. Candus rate among the best re- actors in the world and they cer- tainly have not been created by "hewers of wood and drawers of water". They represent an out- standing Canadian scientific and engineering accomplishment which is widely recognized throughout the world, but not in Pickering by the editor. GROEN/ News Advertiser photo Dr. Sarah Wilcox has provided necessary treatment for this dog struck by at least one car on Westney Road in Ajax this week, but seeks permission from the animal's owners to go ahead with surgery to complete his recovery. Community BY KEITH GILLIGAN Staff Writer AJAX — Staff at the Ajax An- imal Hospital are looking for the owner of a German shepherd mix on the mend after being hit by at least one car. Veterinarian Dr. Sarah Silcox says the male dog was struck on Westney Road South near the Ajax GO station Tuesday morn- ing. Ajax resident Sandra Rudkin was on the way to the animal hos- pital when she carne upon the ac- cident around 8 a.m. "I was on the way to the vet's with my cats;" says Mrs. Rudkin. She then had to tend to the in- jured dog until help arrived. A put a blanket over him" Both Durham Regional Police and Ajax Fire Services responded and Dr. Silcox arrived shortly after Mrs. Rudkin called the ani- mal hospital. "When we arrived, (the dog) was in shock, had several abra- sions and injuries to his hind end;" reports Dr. Silcox. The pooch was taken to the Finley Avenue animal hospital, put on IV fluids and treated for shock. "There were several wounds to his left hind leg that were treated and bandaged" and it had "sever- al fractures" to his pelvis, the vet- erinarian says. She says the German shepherd cross, with a possible husky mix, is not neutered and "fairly young, under two years of age. He seems to be a wonderful dog, he has a wonderful temperament with us:' But, the animal hospital can't find his owner. "There was no collar, no tags and we scanned him and there was no microchip;' says Dr. Silcox. Apart from his injuries, the dog appears to be healthy. As for the injury to the pelvis and hip joint, dogs "do do best with surgical repair," Dr. Silcox notes. His recovery would be "poor to fair" without surgery. Bone fragments from the pelvis could cause "injuries to the surrounding area, the bladder and bowels." Those areas appear to be OK for now as the dog has had blad- der and bowel movements. There seems to he no nerve damage. And, the dog's tail wags. "He certainly has the spirit for recov- ery," Dr. Silcox notes. "Some dogs do amazing things. We've looked at X-rays and said no way and a week later they're up and walking around. "He's stood with support. There's a good chance he will re- gain function of his hind end;" she adds. Hospital staff called business- es in the area to see if the dog be- longed to them, but couldn't lo- cate the owner, Dr. Silcox says. "We want to find the owner to authorize the surgery" So far, the cost of treating the dog has reached 5600 and the surgery will cost "several hun- dred", she says. Anyone with information can call the Ajax Animal Hospital at 683-6430. DITION, September 19, 1999 PACE 7 P Summer meant business as usual for school vandals BY SUSAN O'NEILL Staff Writer The "rash of school vandalism" reported by police recently is fairly common during the summer months, say officials from the re- gion's two school boards. According to Durham Regional Police Constable Sherri Delaney, between 15 to 20 schools were van- dalized throughout the summer, with incidents at public and Catholic schools and at elementary and secondary facilities across Durham. "It's pretty much senseless dam- age;' she reports, explaining most incidents involved "windows being smashed or things being kicked over and broken. "We had one school where a sub- stantial amount of computer and camera equipment was taken;" Const. Delaney notes, adding school vandalism is "fairly normal" when schools are -closed for summer vacation. "Vandalism is always an issue" says David Visser, superintendent of business for the Durham Catholic District School Board, adding "I would say our vandalism for this year ... is not extra-ordinarv" Jack Massie, supenntendent of plant services for the Durham Dis- trict School Board, also reports the board "normally encounters" sever - a] incidents of vandalism during the quit Pickerin nuclear adviso bod Summer, noting damage typically groups ryY ranges anywhere from graffiti to broken windows. "1 don't think there's been anv But OPG officials vow to work with committee towards `positive solutions' more than normal (this year);' he add' tha L.1 BY MARIANNE TAKACS Staff Writer Citing frustration at not being listened to, four community groups have quit the Community Advisory Council (CAC)estab- lished by Pickering nuclear station management to provide public input on operations and improve- ments at the plant. Pickering -Ajax Citizens To- gether (PACT) for the Environ- ment, Durham Nuclear Awareness, the Liverpool West Community .Association (LWCA) and the Pickering East Shore Community Association provided notice of their departure in a joint letter to station chief Bob Stricken. "We have contributed consider- able advice, comments and ideas to the process to date;' states the letter. "We find we are repeating ourselves in an effort to be heard by Pickering Nuclear, and see very n little progress on the paof Pick- ering Nuclear management in act- ing in a meaningful way on the input that we have been providing. We fail to find the evidence that would continue to justify the ex- tensive time and energy that we have been committing to this exer- cise." The four groups have partici- pated in CAC meetings since June, withholding final agreement to join the committee pending their evaluation of its effectiveness. All four were also members of the Community Working Group (CWG) established by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) last year to provide citizen input on an envi- ronmental review of the Pickering station ordered by the Atomic En- ergy Control Board. PACT chairman Dave Steele says the CAC has been little more than a public relations exercise for nuclear plant management. "You sit and you argue and dis- cuss and you throw out ideas but the bottom line is they go out and do their own thing. What we don't want to get into is a chit-chat rela- tionship with Pickering Nuclear and no action.' LWCA's Martin Herzog says station management appear to be "going through the motions" at CAC meetings. '"I'bey come to us and tell us we've taken these steps," explains Mr. Herzog. "'lire reason we all thought we came to the table was to discuss what steps should be taken and how they should be taken" Mr. Steele says PACT will DAVID STEELE 'They go out and do their own thing.' focus its efforts instead on the fed- eral environmental assessment of the nuclear station OPG must complete for the possible restart of the plant's 'A' reactors. "We will watch and we will at- tend every meeting and work be- hind the scenes as we have done in the past. We will do what we have to do. We will be just as active as before;' says the PACT chairman. Pickering councillors have ,:hosen a team of scientists and academics from the University of Toronto and McMaster University to act as the Town's advisers for the environmental assessment, and have demanded a broad and thor- ough assessment that addresses all the concerns of the community about the impact of the nuclear fa- cility. "It's now up to council to make sure it's done and if it's not done, PACT and the others are going to be on them," says Mr. Steele. Nuclear plant spokesman Pat O'Brien says OPG remains com- mitted to community consultation, and the CAC will continue with its I l remaining members. Those in- clude representatives of local gov- ernments, agencies, the board of trade and two individual citizens, but no residents' groups from Ajax or Pickering. Mr. Visser reports the costs asso- ciated with repairs vary depending on the incident. "I couldn't give you a figure off the top of my head" regarding the amount the board typically spends to repair schools that have been van- dalized, he says, noting "anytime you can decrease vandalism, that means more money can be spent elsewhere to improve the schools:' Meanwhile, Crime Stoppers is still looking for the public's help in solving these incidents. It's a Mobile Showroom which just may be the only one in Canada. "The clay is gone when you carred some brochures and a sample window to a customer's home," explains Wayne. "So obtained a retired North York Mobile Library truck and installed interior walls along with all of my window samples." When you call Durham Windows and Doors for a free esti- mate, Wayne will show up at your door with his Mobile Showroom which you'll enter by way of a sliding patio door. Inside, displayed on the walls, are the Tech Weld 2000 series of vinyl windows which you're free to operate and you'll discover the many special features including how they can be cleaned without going outside. "After being in this business for 18 years, I can honestly say these are the finest windows on the market," says Wayne. "They're triple sealed to reduce air leakage and come with heavy duty hardware." If you desire, you can choose the Low E Glass which filters out the ultraviolet rays keeping your home cooler in the sum- mer and eliminate fading of your curtains, drapes and furni- ture. All of the windows come with a lifetime warranty and a 10 -year guarantee on the installation.
