Public wants `objective'review

PICKERING — Politicians
here want university academics
and scientists rather than profes-
sional consultants to advise the
Town on the environmental as-
sessment of the Pickering nuclear
plant.
In voting to hire the team from
the University of Toronto and Mc-
Master University at their execu-
Me committee meeting Monday,
several council members suggest-
ed area residents would prefer in-
dependent scientists and acade-
mics scrutinize the environmental
assessment, rather than consul-
tants who have worked for Ontario
Power Generation (OPG) or the
nuclear industry in the past.

New program in Durham targets lead -foots
A series of roadways in
Durham Region have now offi-
cially been branded Community
Safety Zones (CSIs), meaning
double trouble for reckless dri-
vers.
As allowed by new provincial
legislation spearheaded by Whit-
by -Ajax MPP Jim Flaherty, On-
tario's attorney general, 11
stretches of road have been desig-
nated CSZs, where traffic viola-
tors will be slapped with double
the normal fines for infractions
like speeding.
A committee including police
traffic specialists selected the
zones, chosen for a one-year trial
period, based on high accident
rates and speeding complaints.
Most of the CSZs throughout
Durham are located within school
zones.
"I think this is good news for
the community. It means that
when parents take their children
to school they can feel comfort-
able knowing that their children
are safe," said Mr. Flaherty
Wednesday in launching the pro-
gram at the corner of Rossland
and Stevenson roads, now offi-
cially a CSZ.
Signs spread across Durham
Region will make motorists
aware when entering zones,
which will be regularly moni-
tored and patrolled by Durham
Regional Police.
"Our plan is to enforce the
zones as much as possible on a
regular, daily basis and include
them in our monthly traffic initia-
tives;" said Deputy Chief Jim
Adams.
CSZs have been designated
along stretches of Simcoe Street
North, Rossland Road and Har-
mony Road in Oshawa; Taunton
Road and Anderson Street in
Whitby; Bayly Street in Ajax;
Whites Road in Pickering; Sand-
ford Road and Regional Road 47
in Uxbridge; King Street in Cour-
tice and Liberty Street in Bow-
manville.
The region has hired a consul-
tant to study the impact of CSZs
during the program's year-long
trial period.

"How do you measure the value of
life'?" Wendy Gillott wondered aloud
moments after the drunk driver who
killed her brother and aunt and critically
injured her parents was sentenced to four
years in prison Thursday.
••Life in prison wouldn't have been
adequate. He killed two people. How do
you put a value on all the grief and suf-
fering our family has gone through'?" she
asked.
A Superior Court jury found Gordon
Brooks, 39, of Scugog Island, guilty in
July of impaired and dangerous driving,
causing the deaths of Brian Fensom, 45,
of Pickering, and June Humphrey, 69, of
Scarborough. He was also found guilty
of impaired and dangerous driving caus-
ing bodily harm to Ms. Gillott's parents,
Murray and Ella Fensom, seriously hurt
in the Oct. 26, 1996 crash in Scugog
Township, and driving with more than
the legal level of alcohol in his blood.
"My family has been reduced by 50
per cent. We lost half of our family;' Ms.
Gillott wrote in a victim impact state-
ment read in court. "He didn't just maim
my parents, he stole them from us... they
are no longer the same."
Prosecutor Ken Polley said the sur-
viving victims continue to suffer physi-
cally and emotionally as a result of the
crash. Ella Fensom, then 74, suffered se-
vere internal injuries, a broken neck,
fractured pelvis and lay in hospital co-
matose for three months after the crash,
court was told.
The jury heard Mr. Brooks was west-
bound on Highway 7A at 9:45 a.m. when
his Chevy pick-up truck crossed the cen-
tre line and collided head-on with the
Jeep Cherokee carrying the Fensom fam-
ily.
Police and paramedics testified dur-
ing the trial they detected a strong odor
of alcohol coming from Mr. Brooks, who
was taken to Lakeridge Health Port Peng
with injuries and later administered a
breathalyzer test. A breath sample taken
at 12:13 p.m. showed he had 128 mg of
alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. The
legal limit is 80 mg.
"Impaired driving at any time is bad
enough, but it is even worse at this time
of day;' Justice Bruce Glass said.
The judge also imposed a seven-year
driving prohibition as part of Mr.
Brooks' punishment.
Court heard Mr. Brooks, a construc-
tion supervisor and married father of
three, has no criminal record and does
not suffer from an alcohol dependency
problem.

"Mr. Brooks genuinely and sincerely is in-
credibly remorseful and sorry for what oc-
curred;" said his lawyer Marshall Sack, who
sought a sentence of 12 to 18 months.
The prosecution wanted a five -to -seven year
sentence.
"It's not a social indiscretion. It's a crime to
drink and drive... Too many people treat this of-
fence too lightly, as if it is not a crime. Mr.
Brooks is a criminal;' Mr. Polley said.
"This court has to send a very clear mes-
sage, which unfortunately often falls on deaf
cars in this country"
Mr. Brooks did not testify during his trial.
Instead, his lawyer claimed Mr. Brooks

The committee's choice, approved
by a four -to -three vote with Council-
lors Ryan, Maurice Brenner, ':Hark

must still be ratified by council next
week.
As well, OPG, which promised to
cover the cost of the Town's indepen-
dent reviewers for the environmental
assessment, has not yet agreed to the
committee's choice. Pickering plant
spokesman Pat O'Brien said after the
meeting OPG would respond to the
Town on the issue by next week's
council session.
An environmental assessment of the
Pickering nuclear facility has been or-
dered by the Atomic Encrgy Control
Board (AECB) as a condition of the
possible restart of the station's four
older 'A' reactors off-line since January
1998. Those reactors were among
seven across the province ordered shut
down by Ontario Hydro ( now OPG) in
August of 1997, following a scathing
consultant's review of the utility's nu-
clear operations.
Hydro said it was shutting the reac-
tors down so it could concentrate on
improving the performance of its 12
newer reactors, including four at Pick-
ering 'B'.

with leaders who are there for
them and not merely to make sure
they keep out of trouble. A place
where they can receive informal
guidance and leadership to help
them sort out all that plagues them
as they grow up. They need a
youth centre.
There are more than 10,000
youth between the ages of 12 and
19 in Pickering. But, there aren't
enough recreation facilities and
programs for youth. Youth in Pick-
ering are bored. They have nothing
to do. And when you put a group
of bored youth together, they will
inevitably push one another to do
things they would not normally
do.
In a survey conducted this sum-
mer in Pickering, 95 per cent of
youth surveyed agree Pickering
needs a youth centre. Similarly, 93
per cent believe there needs to be
more in Pickering for youth to do.
It is a clear demonstration that it's
time for a youth centre in Picker-

recreational activities alongside
constructive learning and develop-

`Simple pleasures missing from life today', says farmer
This is the first in an occasional
series of articles about 'Families
on the Homestead'.
BY LINDA WHITE
Stuff Writer
He remembers the days when
his brothers tried to discourage
him from taking over the family
farm. But while they "dwelt on
the hardships", Harold 'Mac'
Ransberry "kept looking at all the
nice things }'arm life had to offer."
He was certain the Orono farm
would be a "great place to raise
kids" and Mr. Ransberry and his
bride Norma Heron enjoyed the
local dances. Sure, he had recog-
nized "there was more to life than
here", and at age 18 had made
half-hearted attempts to join the
army during the Second World
War.
But those attempts didn't pan
out, largely because "We saw
them herding (army) recruits into
the truck like cattle and weren't
impressed one bit" Mr. Ransber-
ry returned to the farm his parents
had purchased in 1915.
They had moved from Toronto
to the 260 -acre farm situated on
what is now Hwy. 35/115.
Though just a wagon trail in those
days, it was still a main road, as
evidenced by numerous upgrades
it has seen since the turn of the
century.
In the late 1920s, for instance,
the municipal road was upgraded
to a gravel road and eventually
taken over by the county — when
it was upgraded further with -bet-
ter gravel", Mr. Ransberry, 76,
laughs.
Still, it wasn't until the mid -
1930s that the so-called "open
road" saw constant winter ser-
vice. Indeed, after very heavy
snowfalls before that, it would
take up to 10 days to clear the
road, says Mr. Ransberry, who
saw his first snowplow there
while walking home from his
one -room schoolhouse also at-
tended by his 1 1 siblings (another
died at age three).
Despite the loss of a son, Mr.
Ransberry's parents "were not the
type of people to dwell on sad
things" and worked hard over the
years. They rarely spoke of their
heritage, though Mr. Ransberry
knows his paternal grandfather
worked on a farm, sold farm ma-
chinery and owned a
grocerylumber store.
Mr. Ransberry looks back
fondly on those simpler times,
when just 12 children from
kindergarten through Grade 8
would attend school at any one
time.
"I remember the old wood
stove in the back of the class-
room. After walking to school
through the snow, we would kick
our boots off and put our feet up
on the stove to warm up. It would
burn holes in the bottom of our
socks."
Christmas was a particularly
special time for the large family.
Maternal relatives from Toronto
"would send a large box to the
railway station and Dad would
hitch up a team (of horses) to go

pick it up ... There was everything
in there but the cat's tail;' Mr.
Ransberry chuckles.
He also remembers the "nice
smell at Christmas. We always
had a cedar tree and when the fire
was burning, it seemed to take the
smell of that tree through the
whole house. I don't think you
could ever duplicate it"
`There was a sense
of concern about your
neighbours... You'd
learn if someone died
or if someone was
born.'
—'MAC' RANSBERRY
But winters were also harsh in
the "tough house" they called
home, which was torn down years
later. Mr. Ransberry remembers
snowdrifts in the bedroom "that
sometimes went over the foot of
the bed. I always joked that those
were the only times my feet were
warm"
Summers were special because
his maternal grandmother would
visit for a month to help his moth-
er make preserves. Mr. Ransberry
still remembers her drinking hot
water as she knitted sweaters for
her grandchildren and mended
their knit socks.
The family also enjoyed visits
from aunts, uncles and cousins in
the warmer months. One cousin
would ride his bike from Toronto
and spend two to three weeks on
the farm, while a popular uncle
would play "nickel scramble" and
toss several coins up in the air at
one time. The kids would scram-
ble through the tall grass to find
them.
While hydro lines that came
through the area in the mid -1930s
..were a big thing", it is the mem-
ories of party telephone lines that
Mr. Ransbc-rry cherishes most.
"Our line was one long and two
shorts, but you'd pick it up even
on a neighbour's ring;" confesses
Mr. Ransberry.
"But it's not that you were
nosier than anyone else. It was
the way of life. There was a sense
of concern about your neighbours
and you got first-class news over
the phone. You'd learn if someone
died or if someone was born. If
the conversation didn't interest
you, you'd hang up."
Married in 1944, Mr. and Mrs.
Ransberry (who is now in a nurs-
ing home after having suffered a
brain aneurysm in 1993) rented a
12 -room stone house for $5 a
month. Mr. Ransberry worked on
the highway for their first two
years of married life, making 35
cents an hour.
"That was a lot of money back
then," Mr. Ransberry says proud-
ly. "You could buy a week's sup-
ply of groceries with one day's
pay, since you had your own pota-
toes and turnips."
During the winter, he would
work several months at the
Goodyear plant in nearby Bow-
manville.
It was in the summer of 1947
that Mr. Ransberry decided to
build a home on the farm for his
young family. Neighbours helped
clear the bush and logs were
sawed into lumber. After digging
a basement in 1949, "the neigh-
bours gathered to pour the foun-
dation and the frame was up that
summer."
Still, Mr. Ransberry needed
money to buy things like win-
dows and doors. At the same
time, General Motors added a
second shift for the first time
ever, and Mr. Ransherry began
working there, "at the best job I
ever had."
Sewn after that, Mr. and Mrs.
Ransberry and their children Dar-
lene, loan and Don moved into
their new home. And it wasn't
sown enough for Mrs. Ransherry,
who surprised her husband with
the help of her brother by moving
furniture to the house using a
wheel harrow.
The younger Mr. Ransberry, a
plumber, lives in his own home
on the farm, which is now about
200 acres, as land was sold when
extension of the highway cut a
portion off from the rest.
"We've done general farming,
though we've been dairy farmers
more than anything else," Mr.
Ransberry says of his years on the
farm. "It's been easy land to
maintain and to work, if you don't
mind walking up a few hills"
While he was "always interest-
ed in how to improve the farm,"
Mr. Ransberry never bought the
newest equipment. Instead, he
used the interest earned on invest-
ments to pay someone else to sow
oats and other tasks.
"That was my method of farm-
ing, but not everybody could do
what I did, cause no one would
have a combine," admits the
grandfather of eight and great-
grandfather of four, who lists
square dance calling as a
favourite hobby.
While the land won't likely
continue to be farmed by the fam-
ily, Mr. Ransberry has no regrets.
"It was so much fun," he says,
pointing to sleigh rides on moon-
lit nights and skating on area
ponds. "I think those simple plea-
sures are what's missing from life
today."

Welfare rolls dip,
but child care
costs climb
Durham is spending less
money on the dole because fewer
people are collecting social assis-
tance, but the Region is forking
out more dough on child care for
the offspring of former welfare
recipients now working.
A report to Regional council's
finance committee 'Wednesday
noted Durham had a $1.8 -million
surplus at the end of July. Any
surplus the Region has at the end
of the year is put into the Rate
Stabilization Fund to he used in
the future to help offset property
tax increases.
Politicians were told that,
while the income support divi-
sion of the social services depart-
ment is running a surplus of S2.5
million, the children's services
section is S500.000 in the red.
Finance commissioner Jim
Clapp noted the decline in wel-
fare rolls has resulted in a good
news -had news situation. -As
welfare clients move off assis-
tance they require ongoing child
care."
Meanwhile, he reported, the
works department is 52(X),000
over budget because of higher-
than-expected winter mainte-
nance costs earlier this year.
And. Durham Regional Police
have a S2.5 -million surplus. but
Mr. Clapp told the committee the
extra money will be used to help
pay for a new radio communica-
tion system that the Police Ser-
vices Board had been planning to
finance through debentures.
In his report, Mr. Clapp noted
resignations and retirements in
the police department are the rea-
sons for the surplus.
The Region's water supply
and sanitary sewage systems are
also running surpluses.
The water supply system is
$450,000 in the black and the
sanitary sewage system has
$800,000 more than anticipated.
Any surplus will be used for
water or sewer projects.
Mr. Clapp noted that, since ac-
tual expenses and revenues in
1998 varied from what was bud-
geted and the same can be ex-
pected this year, the finance de-
partment doesn't yet know if
there will be a surplus or a deficit
at the end of 1999.
In addition, it isn't yet known
what impact provincial govern-
ment downloading initiatives will
have on the 1999 Durham Region
budget.

Harvest seeds today for next year's garden
I'm often asked if seeds
can be collected from the
garden and saved for plant-
ing next year. The answer,
of course, is yes.
There are important
benefits to collecting and
using seeds from your own
garden plants — one be-
cause you're assured
they'll tolerate the growing
conditions. Another is you
can choose to harvest seeds
from the very best plants in
your flower beds and the
vegetable garden.
How satisfied you arc
with the results depends on
several factors. Some
plants can he propagated
successfully from their own
seed, but some do not breed
true to seed. That means
what you saw this year in
the garden might in fact
look very different next
year from the seeds you
harvested this year.
Sometimes success is
Poor due to cross-pollinat-
ing because the seeds will
not grow true to type and
may not set flowers or fruit.
Squash, cabbage and ap-
ples are good examples of
this.
Don't let this deter you.
Man ornamentals, includ-
ing bachelor buttons, cos-
mos. Iceland poppies,
Johnny jump -ups,
marigolds, morning glory
and violets, readily set seed
which is easy to collect and
generally prcxluce the same
product as the mother
plant. It's also very exciting
to find out that you can cre-
ate new varieties yourself.
You should remember,
though, that many of the
seeds you collect will be
from hybridized varieties
and seeds from these plants
create unpredictable re-
sults. When two plants are
crossed, each resulting
seed is unique in its charac-
teristics. Because of genet-
ic variability, the offspring
can be totally unlike either
parent.
Commercially -con-
trolled crossings have cre-
ated many fine ornamentals
and vegetables.
The original hybrids are
derived from a controlled
cross between two selected
parents.
If you save secds from
these hybrids they often do
not resemble either parent,
or are often inferior in
quality.
If you want to try col-
lecting secds here are some
tips: Collect seed when it is
mature and do it on a day
that is dry.
Thoroughly dry the seed
before storing it. Some
seeds are very small — al-
most like dust, such as be-
gonia, and are difficult for
the home gardener to gath-
er and store.
Some, like sweet peas,
have a hard shell and they
will take longer to dry. Oth-
ers like tomatoes are found
inside the fruit and need to
be thoroughly cleaned be-
fore drying. Once harvest-
ed, seed must be dried thor-
oughly for about a week.
Moisture will cause mould
to form and ruin the seed.
Dry the seed at room tem-
perature in a well -ventilat-
ed room.
I spread them out on a
paper towel so excess
moisture is absorbed. I pre-
fer to store seed in paper
envelopes rather than plas-
tic for this reason. Label
and date your seeds. Your
memory may fade over the
winter months and in April
seeds can look remarkably
alike. Store seed in a cool,

some patience.
Some plants do not have
a high germination rate (40
per cent), while others ger-
minate readily (90 per
cent).
As a general rule to en-
sure the best possible ger-
mination, you should use
your seeds the following
spring or at least within
two years.

Ami -scald showers
the key to bathroom safety
(NC) -Most of us have endured the
unpleasant experience of a burst of hot or
cold water in the shower when a toilet is
flushed or a dishwasher is turned on. Not
only is it unpleasant, it can be dangerous.
To protect bathers, the
government now
requires anti -scald
valves in all new
bathroom construction.
Pressure Balance Safety
There are a variety of
anti -scald valves
available on the market.
The most common type
is the pressure balance
valve with "spool and
sleeve" technology.
Delta Faucet uses this
technology in their
Monitor Series with
Scald-Guard(r) valving.
This feature keeps the
water temperature
constant and
comfortable (within
1.7°C of the original
temperature), even when water is diverted to
another area of the house. Sp(x)l and sleeve
pressure balancing ensure that when the
incoming hot and cold water pressures are
equal, the spool inside the valve stays
centered to allow maximum water Flow. If
there is a drop in cold water flow, the spool
shifts to equalize the water flow and keep
temperature constant.
In addition to anti -scald
valves, leading faucet
manufacturers also
include a limit stop
feature for added safety.
This dial can be set to
prevent bathers from
turning the shower handle
up to dangerously hot
temperatures.
Pressure Balance Style
Adding the safety of
pressure balance to your
home doesn't mean you
have to skimp on style.
There is a wide array of
pressure balance valves
available. From
economical chrome
models, to luxury models
with separate temperature
memory and volume
control, to single or two -handle styles, there
are pressure balance showers for every
budget and taste.

Ten tips to choosing the right wood floor
r(NQ-You've decided you want the rich
look of a wood floor to enhance your home.
Now you want to make sure you get the
right wood floor. Melanie Wood, vice
president of design for flooring
manufacturer Mannington, recommends
considering ten key points that will help
you decide on the perfect wood tone and
design to match your own home style.
1. Consider Room Sire. If the room is
small, select a lighter color to make the
room appear larger. Conversely, rich, darker
tones will absorb available light and create a
warmer, more intimate environment in a
large room.
2. Choose a color to either coordinate or
contrast with your current furnishings and
cabinetry. For contrast, white cabinets look
great with virtually any wood floor.
3. Think about the traffic your floor will see
and choose a wood flooring with the
appropriate protective finish. Companies
like Mannington offer no -wax ultraviolet -
cured urethane finishes that are incredibly
durable and resistant to stains, water
spotting and wear -through. These finishes
are also water-based and have a top coat
that is 100% solvent -free. Select wood
floors with a satin or semi -gloss finish for
areas with lots of foot traffic, like family
rooms, dens and kitchens. Reserve floors
with high gloss for rooms with less activity
such as a formal dining room or living
room.
4. Note your light sources -- including
window sizes, the direction the,, face. and
whether the rooms have incandescent or
fluorescent light. These factors all
contribute to the appearance of your floor.
So try to view your wood selection in the
same lighting that will be used in your
home.
5. Pay attention to your design style. "It's
important to choose your flooring to
coordinate with the style you like:' advises
Wood. "Whether your home is traditional,
country or contemporary, wood floors can
make a style statement." For traditional or
country decors, a random width plank (such
as 3", 5" and 7" inches) is a good choice.
Single -width planks work well in a
contemporary setting. Darker woods can
have a more formal look, while lighter
floors such as natural or white -washed tones
lend themselves to more casual styles.
6. Weigh plank widths. A narrow width
board (2 114 -inch strip, or 3 -inch plank) will
visually expand a room. A wider board (5 -
or 7 -inch plank) usually works better in a
larger room. Wider planks are enjoying a
resurgence in popularity and companies like
Mannington offer a range of options.
7. Look at edge styles. A plank with a
beveled edge highlights the natural wood
texture and creates visual interest. A plank
with a square edge provides a smooth, more
traditional look across the entire room.
8. Play with design possibilities. Only your
imagination limits your choices. Consider
laying your flooring on the diagonal. Use a
contrasting or complementary wood color
to frame the room, or to create a dramatic
focal point. A border or contrasting color can also be used as a transition from an existing
floor in one room to a new, non-matching floor in an adjoining room.
9. Contemplate the benefits of neutral tones. Your floor should complement rather than
dominate other design elements in the room. Wood's natural tone lets you use it as the
neutral color to achieve continuity and balance in your interior design.
10. Shop at retail locations specializing in flooring. This is no time to "wing it" at a huge

Turn on your bulbs next year...
with a little dusting this fall
(NC) -Plants with tender bulbs or corms such
as tulip, daffodil, narcissus, crocus,
hyacinth, dahlia, and begonia are valuable
additions in virtually every home garden,
especially as a perennial border, cutting
garden, or as bedding plants. Fall is not only
bulb planting time, it's also the time to
consider removing bulbs from existing beds,
if you choose to bring them indoors over
winter. This practice should he considered
in areas where extreme cold or sudden
Chinooks could cause bulb damage.
Whether you're planting or storing, there are
some basic steps you should take to help
assure healthy plants next year. To begin
with, when planting. be sure to plant at the
proper depth and in an area with appropriate
sunlight and drainage. Planting depths do
vary, so ask your local nursery, for
instructions when buying your bulbs. Also
be sure to use a quality bulb dust such as
Wilson's Bulb and Soil Dust, which is a
combination insecticide -fungicide. This will
help control root rots, insects, and damping
off --a soil -inhabiting fungus. Dust is usually
worked into the soil before planting, but be
sure to read and all follow label application
instructions carefully.
When storing, be sure to dig up bulbs
carefully to avoid damage. After drying and
curing the bulbs (once again, ask your
nursery staff for advice on specific times),
shake the dry, clean bulbs in a paper bag,
combined with a small amount of bulb and
soil dust - about one tablespoon of dust for
every kg. of bulbs.
If you're uncertain about which product to
buy, Wilson Bulb and Soil Dust is a product
that is widely and successfully used by
gardening professionals and home gardeners
alike. Its combination insecticide and
fungicide formula is effective for both
planting and storage. Remember, a little
TLD (tender loving dusting) now will assure
vibrant colour in your garden next year. For
more information on Wilson Bulb and Soil
Dust and other quality Wilson products be
sure to visit their website at www.wilson.nu-
gro.com.

Special to the News Advertiser
For the past five years we've commemo-
raied our anniversary by re -visiting the (un-
filled city of San Francisco.
"There are countless cozy cappuccino cafes,
exquisite boutique -style hotels and incredibly
scenic views from every hilltop that your feet
will take you - or in this year's case ...our
almighty scooter! Actually with hoth of us
snuggled onto our 'Elite ISO', almighty was
hardly the appropriate de.wriptor - but it sure
was a blast!
Never being a Hell's Angel wannabc, a
Harley-Davidson hero, or for that matter, even
much of a leather kind of gal, I felt somewhat
naive to the ins and outs of riding piggy -back
on anything motorized. "You've got to lean
into the tum... just follow me;' Brent reas-
sured, and after a couple of heart -thumping,
saddle -swerving kilometres, this law of gravi-
ty became somewhat instinctive and we were
off to the races - or should I say the beaches!
En route, we passed through the Presidio
Army Museum, revealing its 20) -year-old
history from 1776, when the first Mexican
Spanish rulers set up post, to the departure of
the U.S. army in 1994. A gateway of towering
evergreens bordered the scenic 'route forty-

our first clue the California coastline was soon
to come.
We, and at least a dozen other camera -clad
first -comers, couldn't resist a Kodak moment
when those spectacular gabled towers of the
world-renowned Golden Gate came into view.
A five -kilometre promenade promised exhila-
rating views of the spectacular span while we
meandered past wind -shaped cypress trees,
eroding rocky bluffs and never-ending vista%
of the pounding Pacific.
Our venture continued into Golden Gate
Park, where its I,(XX) acres offers all types of
recreation amenitie::. Deciding to take a
breather from our strenuous muscle -wrench-
ing woofing machine, we soaked up a few
glorious California rays and watched blading,
biking, boarding and barbecuing enthusiasts
enjoy this inner city chunk of greenery. The
park also 'promises a rose garden' boasting
6.(XX) plant species from all over the world.
Moving onward and upward (and I mean
upward!) our Elite 150 chugged the steep and
winding gateway to what appeared to he to
San Francisco's heaven - Twin Peaks, and
gazing out, we witnessed breathtaking
panoramic vistas of the 47 square -mile city.

abundant density of pastel -toned homes,
where row -on -row corrugated bay windows

Our homehcund route took us past the
plethora of souvenir shops, gift stores and var-
ied Fisherman's Wharf seafood houses offer-
ing their daily catch. Crowds gathered around
mimes, magicians, musicians - and others
who entertain - in order to maintain their San
Franci,, o lifestyle! Although tourist -packed.
it can be an enjoyable afternoon visit, but
don't forget your walking shoes, especially if
you want to make the trek up to Ghtradelli
Square, where serious chocoholics, like my-
self, can have a field day.
Even though the only exercise my thighs
endured all day was the sccx)ter straddle
squeeze, the resonance from a nearby cable
car hell was music to my ears. Our retreat for
the night was located on 'the other side of
Russian hill; and the idea of hiking its land-
scaped terrace to the sky, where the grade be-
comes too steep for anything Fut steps, did not
particularly sound like a rushing experience!

Panthers, Axemen play to draw in opener
BY AL RIVE7T
Sports Editor
The season -opening battle
between the Pickering Boyer
Pontiac Panthers and the Ajax
Klondike Axemen junior hock-
ey teams solved absolutely
nothing.
The neighbouring squads
began OHA Ontario Provincial
Junior 'A' HockeN League reg-
ular -season play at the Ajax
Community Centre Tuesday
night with a 5-5 tic in their
first of eight encounters this
year.
Neither club was able to
hold leads in the contest. The
Axemen squandered a 4-1 sec-
ond -period advantage, allow-
ing the visiting Panthers to
pump four goals behind start-
ing goaltender Josh Ross to
take a 5-4 margin into the final
20 minutes. In the third period,
it was the Panthers' turn to re-
linquish the lead, as the Aja -
clans scored the lone goal of
the stanza. Neither team found
the net in the overtime session.
Axemen rookie head coach
Jason Nobili was pleased with

the effort of his young team,
which struggled through the
pre -season with a 2-4 mark. As
was the case through the exhi-
bition schedule, the inexperi-
enced defensive corps strug-
gled in the contest, but the of-
fence was a pleasant surprise.
"I thought we competed
quite well," says Nobili. "I
think it was a good start to
what should he a good and
fruitful rivalry between the
two teams this season. I was
pleased with our offence. Any
time you give up five goals,
you can't be too happy, but I
think we responded well by
scoring five goals. Last year,
we had trouble scoring three or
four goals a game."
Conversely. Panthers' coach
Eric Ross was disappointed
with the inconsistency of his
charges' effort.
"We played well in spurts,
but we also looked like a team
with 14 rookies at times. But, 1
think it's part of the challenge,
to try to minimize rookie mis-
takes:" says Ross.
