Durham plans for Toronto labour dispute
Trash collection won't be affected here: Anderson
Residents in Durham Region
shouldn't notice any difference
with garbage collection if there's a
strike by outside workers in Toron-
to.
Most of the garbage collected
in Durham is dumped each week
day at the Toronto -owned Keele
Valley landfill site in York Region.
Durham Regional Chairman
Roger Anderson says the Region
has arranged to dispose of garbage
at a landfill near Thorold in the Ni-
agara region.
Regional waste management
manager Peter Watson says, "The
Region's waste will be taken to an
alternative landfill site in the event
a labour dispute makes access to
Keele Valley difficult or impossi-
ble"
About 7,000 outside workers in
Toronto could be on strike as of

they come home at night, it will be

Blue Box collection won't be
affected either, officials say.
"We've been working on a con-
tingency plan for a couple of
weeks;" Mr. Anderson says.
The Region has two private
waste haulers — Pebblestone in
Whitby and Miller Waste in Pick-
ering — which haul garbage to
Keele Valley daily.
"T"hese contractors will divert
waste going to that particular site
to another site near Thorold in the
event they can't access Keele Val-

Heavy interest shown in GM
desl*gn Jobs
Engineers flood automaker with resumes following Durham investment decision
More than 1,100 engineers
from around the world have
flooded General Motors of Cana-
da Ltd., with resumes for a shot at
winning the dream job of design-
ing a car.
GM, the country's biggest auto
maker, said Thursday that al-
though most of the interest for
150 design positions is coming
from Canada, the company has
received numerous resumes from
as far away as Australia, Brazil,
the United Kingdom, Mexico and
Romania.
Linda Stewart, personnel di-
rector for engineering and prod-
uct planning, also said the major-
ity of engineers expressing inter-
est have 10 to 15 years in other in-
dustries such as the aerospace
sector.
Education
conference
wants parents
as partners
Annual event
runs Oct. 23
Parents of students in elementary
and secondary public schools across
Durham are invited to take part in the
Durham District School Board's eighth
annual Parents as Partners Conference
on Saturday, Oct. 23.
"Parents won't want to miss this op-
portunity to gain insight into their
child's education and network with
other parents," states a news release, re-
porting more than 40 workshops will
be offered throughout the day.
The conference takes place from
8:15 am. to 2:30 p.m. at the board's ed-
ucation centre and the adjoining Sin-
clair Secondary School
Registration is $20, which includes
{unch, and day care is offered at no
charge for parents attending the confer-
ence. For more information or to regis-
ter, call your local elementary or sec-
ondary school.
Durham Canadian
Club meets
The Canadian Club of Durham Re-
gion holds a dinner meeting Tuesday,
Sept. 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the Oshawa
Holiday Inn, 1011 Bloor St. E.
Naturalist Jim Richards will give
an illustrated talk on Arctic wildlife.
Phone 668-2484 or 728-1718 for
information or reservations.
"For many engineers, this is a
dream job," Ms. Stewart said in
an interview. "When they were
kids and going to university, the
ultimate career would be to de-
sign cars"
GM announced last month it
would invest about $20 million to
double the size of its engineering
division in Oshawa. The expan-
sion also means GM will have the
ability to design and develop a ve-
hicle in Canada for the first time.
The engineers will earn be-
tween $50,000 and $80,000 annu-
ally, accordii,g to the company.
The auto giant placed newspa-
per ads for design engineers with
the headline, 'Where do you look
for inspiration?' for three days
last week. Resume` imrnediatcl%
poured in via the V,,+
and Au
site and electronic mail. More
than 800 resumes arrived elec-
tronically while another 300 came
through regular mail.
Ms. Stewart said some GM of-
ficials were surprised at the heavy
response but she expected it in
view of a strong stream of unso-
licited resumes that the company
regularly receives.
"We're getting well qualified
people with a wealth of experi-
ence," she said.
Ms. Stewart noted that despite
the interest from abroad, GM
would focus on awarding the bulk
of the new jobs to Canadian resi-
dents.
GM already hired some engi-
neers this week and hopes to

Roger Barker, registrar for
Professional Engineers Ontario,
said Canada has a good supply of
qualified engineers to fill GM's
needs.
He added some Canadian engi-
neers are moving south of the
border as part of the so-called
'brain drain' but the group's re-
search shows more are coming to
Canada from the U.S. and other
countries.
"There is a tremendous de-
mand in certain sectors like the
computer industry for engineers
in Canada;" said Mr. Barker
whose group regulates engineers
in the province.
"I think the auto industry is a
l t rrn r, high tech than it used to

be. There's less emphasis on me-
chanical engineering."
GM's expansion is the second
move by an auto maker to in-
crease engineering and research
in Canada during the last two
years. Earlier, DaimlerChrysler
Canada Inc. opened a research
centre in Windsor.
"These are tremendous oppor-
tunities for engineers to get in-
volved in the auto industry," said
Mr. Barker, a former mechanical
engineer in the British auto sec-
tor.
GM officials also say the ex-
pansion in Oshawa could lead to
bigger projects and mandates
from the company's Detroit -
based parent.

vironmental assessment process; the
potential transfer of federal lands to a
future airport authority; and issues of
interest and concern related to future
airport planning, development and op-
erations.
"In the interest of fostering contin-
uing good relations, the department
agrees to a forum for a discussion, al-
though not necessarily a public forum"
on those issues, Minister Collenette
said.
It will not, however, address the
area of land to be held for future po-
tential airport purposes; the process for
dealing with surplus federal land; and
the size, type, and timing of any poten-
tial future airport.
"The department feels that these are
issues which should be addressed sep-
arately since they are not directly relat-
ed to the matter at hand concerning an
alternative to federal airport zoning
regulations;" the response explains.
On the issue of land designation,
the compromise solution — recom-
mended by an airport stakeholders'
group of community and government
representatives — requested Transport
Canada to initiate an amendment to the
federal Aeronautics Act to eliminate
the need to declare the federal lands as
an 'airport site'.
Ottawa wanted the designation in
order to enable it to impose zoning
regulations on the area surrounding the
airport property in north Pickering
which would protect the site for possi-
ble future use as an airport. The zoning
would prohibit land uses such as tall
buildings or transmission towers
which could conflict with an airport.
Though federal officials have main-
tained designation does not necessarily
mean an airport would be built in the
near future or ever, VOCAL (Voters
Organized to Cancel the Airport
Lands), the group which spearheaded
opposition to Ottawa's plan to desig-
nate its lands here for airport use since
it was announced in July 1998, and
some Town councillors have main-
tained designation would make an air-
port inevitable.
But Transport Canada "does not
agree with such an amendment" be-
cause of regulations outlined in the
Act.
Coun. Pickles is "disappointed" by
that decision and is also disappointed
"that they are not more open to looking
at scaling down their land holdings."
He intends "to keep reminding the
Minister (of Transportation) of his and
the community's opinion that an air-
port would not be needed for a very,
very long time, if ever."
Mayor Anhurs is looking forward
to talking to neighbouring municipali-
ties on outstanding issues. "It's posi-
tive, but it's not everything we hoped
for... but a window of opportunity still
exists"

be no impact on local garbage collec-
tion service or on the Region's ability
to dispose of waste"
In Durham, municipalities are re-
sponsible for collecting garbage and
the Region disposes of it.
"Brock Township and Clarington
aren't affected in any way. Their waste
goes to other landfills;' Mr. Watson
states.
Clarington garbage is trucked to the
Canadian Waste landfill near Napanee,
while Brock's garbage goes to the Re-
gion's rural landfill in that community.
."There will be a slight increase in
the cost to dispose of the Region's
waste at this alternative landfill, main-
ly because it's further away. It's the
trucking costs," Mr. Watson says.
Mr. Anderson says Durham will
check its contract with Toronto to see
if the Region can seek penalties or
compensation if Keele Valley isn't
open.

Special young people
deserve recognition
Your input needed for nominating
Junior Citizen of the Year
So many rise to the challenge, but so
few are properly recognized.
Today's youth face increasingly dif-
ficult challenges in their lives vet so
many still find time in the day and com-
passion in their heart to go the extra
mile.
So at this time of the year we can
pay tribute to those aged six to IS who
have made significant contributions to
society. It can be an act of bravery, such
as when Eric LeClair, a 1998 nominee,
saved his brother's life when he pulled
him from the bottom of a neighbour's
pool last year. It may be someone who
has displayed personal courage in over-
coming a disability or a young person
who has given selflessly to community
projects.
This is the 19th year for the Ontario
Junior Citizen of the Year Awards Pro-
gram, sponsored by the Ontario Com-
munity Newspapers Association
(OCNA) which represents 265 mem-
bers including this publication. By tak-
ing a few hours of your own time you
can ensure their efforts are properly
recognized and appreciated.
Nomination forms should document
the activities of the nominee with let-

To the editor:
Our daughter, who is off to Sir
Wilfred Laurier University, has
been waitressing at a restaurant in
Pickering over the summer in
order to save for school.
One recent Tuesday night as
she waited tables, a couple of
young men decided they were
going to give her a hard time, hav-
Are community -run programs the answer?
Students need to have after-school activities resume this year
Although the commencement of a
new school year is traditionally a time
for fresh beginnings, an all -too -famil-
iar problem continues to face high
school students here as pupils begin
what could be their second year with
little or no extra -curricular activities.
Despite the best efforts of local
union leaders and school board offi-
cials from Durham's public and sepa-
rate boards, the resumption of sports
teams and clubs doesn't seem likely
after teachers turned down revised
contract offers late last year.
And, while public and separate
school board officials say they're still
hopeful the situation will work itself
out, local union [traders believe teach-
ers' working conditions will have to be
reduced before educators will volun-
teer to offer their time.
"We would certainly love to return
to a world where our members were
able to commit (to extra -curricular ac-
tivities)," Ontario Secondary School
Teachers' Federation Durham District
president Shelley Page told the News
Advertiser this week, noting "that will
let another year go by without after -
Susan school Programs if that isn't feasible.
However, the board's plan to recruit
O'Neill volunteers could cause further tensions
between the board and its teachers, as
Staff Writer Ms. Page suggests that action would
"further alienate teachers" in Durham.
But, if teachers can't or won't run
require some relief in terms of work-
load."
Bob McDonnell, president of the
Durham secondary division of the On-
tario English Catholic Teachers' Asso-
ciation (OECTA), agrees there will
have to be some improvements in
teachers' workload before teachers
have the "time, energy and enthusi-
asm" to get involved.
So, it appears the two parties are as
far apart as ever. Which is part of the
reason the Durham District School
Board could look to the community for
help when the board unveils a plan
Sept. 20 to kick-start extra -curricular
activities in schools. While board
chairman Doug Ross believes the pre-
ferred option would be for teachers to
run programs, he says the board won't
teams and others offer to, then why
should the board turn them away?
A community -run program isn't
ideal. Students would surely be better
Off if teachers were willing and able to
commit to after-school activities.
But, if that's not going to happen,
then it's unfair to expect Durham's stu-
dents to continue to pay the price for
last year's labour disputes. The stu-
dents, after all, are what the education
system is all about. And, if it takes
community volunteers to get programs
running again, then so be it.

that this was going to cost her $50

what had happened to her and

Durham pavilion opening draws crowd
Trans -Canada
Trail holds
meaning
for residents
BY LF -SLI -'Y McMASTF_'R
Staff Writer
Blair Nichol and his mountain
bike group, the Lunartics, couldn't
think of a better tribute to a fallen
friend and brother.
That's why he joined more than
100 residents across Durham at
Uxbridge's Centennial Park Thurs-
day morning to search through the
1,500 names listed on the back of
the new Trans -Canada Trail pavil-
ion.
"It reads ADW and stands for
Awfully Dan Weiss;' he explained.
' That was our saying for him, sort
of like that's awfully damn nice of
you.
An avid mountain biker, the 31 -
year -old tore up a few of his own
trails with the night-time Uxbridge
riding group before his sudden
death in June. Somewhere along the
way, a friend had heard about the
Trans -Canada Trail donor program.
Scheduled to open next Septem-
ber, the 16,000 -kilometre multi -
recreational trail will run from St.
John's, Nfld. to Vancouver, B.C. and
north to Tutuyuktuk. The project,
which is being funded through pub-
lic donations and corporate sponsor-
ships, gives Canadians a chance to
help finance building a piece of the
trail. In recognition of their contri-
bution their names or those of a
loved one will be listed along the
trail.
Mr. Weiss's friends rushed to get
their submission in just weeks be-
fore the unveiling. Finding Dan's
tribute in the tangle of names should
be easy. The group chipped in
$1,800, which not only furnishes the
monument with a larger plaque but
ensures his name on each of the 16
pavilions to he built across the coun-

The trail, which will be designed
for hiking, cycling, horseback rid-
ing, cross-country skiing and snow-
mobiling, will tun along the aban-
doned Lindsay -Uxbridge tail line,
through to Uxbridge and then hook
up with Toronto.
The idea of a Canada -wide trail
was conceived by the Canada 125
Corporation in 1992. Uxbridge con-

local councillors lobbied the Toron-

be included as part of the trail and
applied to the Trans Canada Trail
Council to be considered a pavilion
stop.

Hwy. 401
fatality
Provincial police say no charges
will be laid in the horrific death of
a mentally distraught man who fell
from a slow-moving tractor trailer
on Hwy. 401 into oncoming traffic
near the Oshawa-Courtice border
Wednesday morning.
The bizarre incident began at
6:30 a.m. when the victim, a 27 -
year -old Leamington man, climbed
onto the running board of a trans-
port parked on the south shoulder,
east of Thickson Road, and started
pounding on the driver's window
shouting threats, said OPP.
The man apparently demanded
the driver "release" a woman he
believed to be inside the transport.
"He woke up the driver and was
trying to get inside. He indicated
he had a weapon and was threaten-
ing (the driver) with serious bodily
harm. The guy was out of control
said Constable John Ritchie, of the
Whitby detachment.
"Fearing for his life;' the star-
tled driver, 38, of Waterford, Ont..
pulled onto the eastbound inside
lane and began travelling at a slow
rate of speed, said Const. Ritchie.
"He didn't know this guy and obvi-
ously just wanted to get the heck
out of there."
With the man still clinging to
the driver's side running board, the
transport driver called 911 on a cel-
lular phone. Three OPP units were
responding when, about three km
east of Harmony Road, the victim
fell into traffic.
Robert Schanner was struck by
a car and a cube van and killed in-
stantly, according to OPP
Based on an investigation, the
OPP has concluded the driver of
the truck did not act criminally.
Const. Ritchie explained the
sleeper door at the back of the cab
had no lock and the driver, who
passed three exit ramps, "knew that
police were coming and didn't
want to stop for fear that this man
would get in.
"The poor driver was just in the
wrong place at the wrong time," he
said, adding there was no intent to
harm the victim.
The transport reached speeds of
no more than 20 to 30 km/h and
witnesses corroborated the driver's
story, he said. The victim's Honda
Civic SI was found near the loca-
tion where the incident began. It
did not appear to have any me-
chanical problems, said Const.
Ritchie.
The victim is believed to have
suffered "mental problems and was
having an episode," when the inci-
dent occurred, said Const. Ritchie.
He was known to suffer from
manic depression and had been "in
and out" of psychiatric facilities in
the past, he said.
OPP Sgt. Bob McManus said
the victim had demanded the "re-
lease" of a woman when he con-
fronted the truck driver. However,
detectives from the OPP's crime
unit concluded "there was never
any girl in that tractor trailer," said
the sergeant.

LA=Z=BOY celebrates Grand Re -opening in Oshawa
LA -Z -BOY is no doubt as
household name with many of us
experiencing the comfort of one of
their famous chairs.
Oshawa is fortunate to have
its own LA -Z -BOY Furniture
Galleries and celebrated the
Grand Re -opening of its newly
expanded store at 900 Champlain
Avenue on Friday, Sept. 10th.
If you ever wanted a LA -Z -
BOY sofa, chair or sleeper then
this is the place to be for great sav-
ings on a wide selection of superi-
or fumishings.
The history ' of LA -Z -BOY
began at Provincial Tile & Carpet
on Simcoe St. S. in Oshawa.
Founded by Dick Sciuk in
1950, it had established itself as a
very successful retailer of flooring
and carpet when in 1975 he decid-
ed to sell the LA -Z -BOY line after
the only Oshawa dealer went out
of business.
"In the beginning we sold just
3 or 4 styles in a couple of colours
says Dick's son and owner Phil
Sciuk. "But sales we're very good
so we expanded our selection as
the demand grew. People really
loved *the unique reclining chairs."
In 1995, the Sciuk's built a
15,000 sq. ft. freestanding store
establishing the first LA -Z -BOY
Gallery in Ontario. It was so
impressive that the store builder,
Dave Taylor, owner of Kirby
600- Champlain Ave. (905) 723-5211
Structures, won the 1997
Varco/Pruden Hall of Fame
Award for best retail building.
"We've always sold style and
colour but best of all comfort."
says Phil. "That's what people
wanted and as a result the busi-
ness has blossomed."
Of course the Sciuk family
never gave up on the Flooring
business. Today you'll find a sec-
tion of the store devoted to
Provincial Tile and Carpet.
"When we started we were a
flooring store that sold furniture,"
says Phil. "Now we're a furniture
store selling flooring."
The success of the LA -Z- BOY
Gallery led to the decision to start
construction on a new addition
last November. The store is now
25,000 sq. ft. with a larger show-
room and warehouse.
"Everything was co-ordinat-
ed with LA -Z -BOY says Phil. "The
planning, selection of furnishings,
the set up of the various galleries
showcasing family moms, living
rooms, leather, recliners and
sleepers.

Wayne Hutchison brings to the replacement window and
door business a new and long overdue feature. It's a Mobile
Showroom which just may be the only one in Canada.
"The day is gone when you carried some brochures and a
sample window to a customer's home," explains Wavne. 'So I
obtained a retired North York Mobile Library truck and
installed interior walls along with all of my window samples."
When you call Durham Windows and Doors for a free esti-
mate, Wayne will show up at your door with his Mobile
Showroom which you'll enter by way of a sliding patio door.
Inside, displayed on the walls, are the Tech Weld 2000
series of vinyl windows which you're free to operate and
you'll discover the many special features including how they
can be cleaned without going outside.
"After being in this business for 18 years, I can honestly say
these are the finest windows on the market," says Wayne.
"They're triple sealed to reduce air leakage and come with
heavy duty hardware."
If you desire, you can choose the Low E Glass which filters
out the ultraviolet rays keeping your home cooler in the sum-
mer and eliminate fading of your curtains, drapes and furni-
ture.
All of the windows come with a lifetime warranty and a
10 -year guarantee on the installation.

Headache is one of the most
common ailments to plague
mankind. Many millions of people
worldwide suffer from headaches
each year, leading to billions of dol-
lars in lost labour costs. Indeed,
headache is one of the most com-
mon complaints treated in the chi-
rQpractic office.
Headaches are usually
brought on by sustained contrac-
tion of the neck muscles which is
often initiated or exacerbated by
stress. It can be relieved by rest and
movements that relax the muscles.
The sinus headache is associ-
ated with inflammation, conges-

The cluster

taking medication does not cor-

headache but merely masks the
symptoms.
An often overlooked cause of
headaches is the malfunction of
the spinal bones of the neck and
upper back. When the spinal
bones, called vertebrae, lose their
normal motion and position, the
sensitive spinal nerves and related
tissues can be irritated, resulting in
painful headaches."
The chiropractor seeks to cor-

headaches by attacking their

Hockey and Physiotherapy
Hockey is an intense cardio-
vascular workout that incorporates
many aspects of competitive sports
such as skill, endurance and body
contact.
Hockey is highly repetitive (i.e.
side to side hip movement) during a
single game and several times a
week. The injuries are from body
contact in the shoulders and ankles.
There is also repetitive movements
and overuse in the ankles, back,
knees, groin, quads and hamstrings.
Many of the injuries are also
from improper
stretching and
being generally
unfit. When a ,
hockey player
niques, i.e. did you know that you
reduce the risk of injury more by
stretching after a game because
stretching conducive tissue ( liga-
ments and tendons) weakens and
makes it more susceptible to injury.
If you have an injury or a dis-
comfort made worse by your sport,
or you have concerns on how to pre-
vent injuries, see your physiothera-

There is no good cancer. But
some are worse than others. And
cancer of the lung is one of the most

women who contract this disease
are dead within five years.
Women who smoke share the

known to cause cancer in humans.
Smoking by pregnant women
has been linked to increased risk of
sudden infant death syndrome and
also to increased respiratory and
middle ear symptoms in young chil-
dren. Smoking cessation produces
huge health benefits. Moreover,
these benefits begin almost immedi-
ately after the last cigarette. After 20
minutes blood pressure and heart
rate decrease to normal. Eight hours
later carbon monoxide levels in the
blood drop and oxygen levels in-
crease to normal.
A day later the risk of a heart at-
tack decreases. And after one vear
ON
the chance of a heart attack drops by
50 per cent. It continues to decline.
In fact, for heart disease; and stroke
the risk is eventually reduced to that
faced by people who have never
smoked.
Ten years after smoke cessation
the risk of dying from lung cancer is
cut in half. But the risk of lung can-
cer never retums to zero for ex-
smokers. After 15 years of being
smoke-free the risk of death returns
to nearly that of a person who has
never smoked.
But how to quit smoking is the
$64,000 question. Like an alcoholic
the smoker must genuinely want to
quit. 'Cold turkey' cures only five
per cent. Others are helped by hyp-
nosis, acupuncture and laser treat-
ment. But the effectiveness of these
procedures is debatable.
Nicotine patches, such as Habi-
trol. Nicotrol and Nicoderm have
had reasonable success in helping
smokers to quit. But at the end of
one year the success rate falls to

The first step is a I hour consul-

been eating and how you've been
feeling. It's a time to learn about
good and bad eating habits as well as
the differences between good and
bad digestion.
Next you take home a question-

systems you may a)e having trouble
with including digestion, elimination

associated with vitamin and mineral

Zyban is the newest medication
available. Unlike the nicotine patch
Zyban is a nicotine -free pill and
works in a different way. Studies
show Zyban is twice as effective as
the nicotine patch.
Nicotine triggers the `nicotine
rush' which stimulates the release of
dopamine and noradrenaline. These
chemicals cause smokers to become
physically addicted to nicotine.
When smokers quit, dopamine
levels drop and noradrenaline activ-
ity is altered. This causes a psycho-
logical craving for cigarettes and
symptoms such as anxiety and irri-
tability. A promising addition to
help smokers quit the habit, it's be-
lieved Zyban restores the level of
dopamine and affects noradrenaline
activity in the smoker. This action
minimizes cravings and withdrawal
symptoms that are associated with
nicotine addictions.
Perhaps Zyban will help to get
our priorities straight, at last!

PICKERING — The
Pickering Boyer Pontiac Red
Sox minor peewee rep base-
ball team completed a dream
season which included back-
to-back Ontario Baseball As-
sociation 'AAA' crowns.
The Sox minor peewees,
which captured the OBA
championship last year as
major mosquitoes, did it
again this year at the provin-
cial tournament in Kitchener
over the Labour Day week-
end. The Pickering squad
posted a 5-1 record at the Al (-
Ontario event to win the cov-
eted title against the best
teams in the province.
In the gold -medal contest,
the Sox rebounded to defeat
Stratford — a team they had
lost to in a previous game at
the provincials — by a 6-3
score.
Sox manager Ken Hussey
says the players are still
walking on air after complet-
ing the near -impossible feat
of winning consecutive OBA
titles.
"After winning the cham-
pionship in our mosquito
Year, we felt that was our mo -
merit in the sun. To complete
a perfect season like we did
was mind boggling. Most
kids never get to win one
OBA championship let alone

onships;' says Hussey.
He notes that it was the
team's stingy defence which
allowed it to win the back-to-
back titles.
*'We played six games and
allowed only 10 runs at the
provincials;' says Hussey.
""The key to our team is we've
always been able to keep
teams from scoring runs on

The only loss for the Sox in
the tournament came in the
fourth game, dropping a 3-2

This season, the Pickering

tournament it entered. The
Sox captured the Missis-

the Eastern Ontario Baseball

rookies, many of whom
played minor hockey in Pick-
ering.
In fact, 13 homegrown
players are expected to be in
the Panthers' line-up to start
the season. And that, says
Panthers' head coach Eric
Ross, is encouraging for the
club.
"Last year, we had kids
from the Pickering area,
which encompassed Scarbor-
ough and Whitby. This year,
we've narrowed are focus
somewhat as they're mainly
from Pickering;' says Ross.
But, most importantly,
notes Ross, these local hock-
ey products have legitimately
earned a roster spot with in-
spired play in training camp
and in pre -season games.
"Of the midgets who've
stepped up to junior like Dan
Schofield, Dave Visconti and
Allan Maclsaac, you can tell
they've had good coaching in
minor hockey.- says Ross.
-Regardless of where they
live, these kids have gone out
and won jobs. They're not on
this team because they're
from Pickering. they're here
because they won the job."
The Panthers begin the
1999-2000 regular -season

Healthy Eating,
There's good news and bad
news about children's health reports
the National Institute of Nutrition
(NIN) in a recent newsletter. "First,
the good news: children generally
have a healthy attitude about food
and seem to be eating well. The not -
so -good news is that obesity is
emerging as a problem, likely
because they are starving for exer-
cise," says NIN President Suzanne
Hendricks.
Kids' Perceptions
On the plus side, eating is
among children's favourite activi-
ties, according to a Health Canada
survey reported in RAPPORT. Kids
give themselves good marks when
asked to evaluate their eating habits
but have some trouble seeing the
bigger nutrition picture. Like many
of the adults whose views they mir-
ror, they tend to label foods as
1.good" or "bad." Fruits, vegetables
and milk score high marks as
healthy, or "good" foods. Children
enjoy foods like chocolate and chips
that are not part of the four Rood
groups, but label them as "bad"
Roods. This polarized view makes it
difficult for them to truly evaluate
their total eating pattern. What's
more, grains are overlooked as an
important part of healthy eating.
According to Health Canada's
survey, parents have the greatest
influence on what kids eat. To rein-
force balance, variety and modera-
tion, they can help their children
think of foods as being "everyday"
and "sometimes" foods. The every-
day foods are found in the four hood
ADVERTISING FEATURE
Healthy L
groups; the sometimes foods are
treats like chocolate, chips and pop -
to be enjoyed occasionally.
Because many children spend
at least some time home alone, par-
ents should provide tasty, nutritious
snacks that are accessible, such as
oatmeal cookies, crunchy cereals,
yogourt or fruit. TV advertising,
another influence on children, can
be tumed into a learning experience
by helping children think about how
the ads they see influence their view
of a product.
The Real Nutrition Picture
Nutrition data on children are
scarce, highlighting the importance
of a recent survey related to
Ontario's Better Beginnings, Better
Futures program. It suggests that
children from low-income Ontario
families are starving mainly for
exercise. Despite low energy
intakes, many of the children were
obese, reports Susan Evers, Ph.D., of
the University of Guelph, in RAP-
PORT.
School-age children were less
active than preschoolers, suggesting
that when days are spent in school,

activity patterns change for
the worse. Furthermore,
although most nutrients
were adequate, calcium
intake seemed low among
the school-age children.
"These findings are dis-
turbing because excess
weight and low bone density
cause serious health prob-
lems in the long term," says
Hendricks. "It is time for
people to merge nutrition
and fitness together in their
minds as inseparable parts of
a healthy lifestyle equation."
A recent World Health
Organization survey con-
firms the trend toward lack
of activity. One quarter of the
11 to 1; year-old Canadian
girls surveyed said that out-
side of school, they were
active only 1 /2 hour per
week or less. Watching tele-
vision was a popular pas-
time among the girls and
boys, with one quarter in
front of the tube at least 4
hours a day.
