Toronto's bid for the 2008 Summer Games is hard to get fired up over at this juncture. I mean, we just got over the whole roller coaster ride concern- ing the 1996 bid, so it's a little hard to get worked up over an event that's more than eight years away. The scan- dal over those International Olympic Committee members on the take and the refusal of Juan Antonio Samamnch to step down still leaves a bitter taste in the mouths of many people. That aside, the groundwork is being laid and even the Province is getting on board. Premier Mike Harris is ready to put his weight behind the Games if, and only if, there's a 100 -per -cent guarantee the games will make money and taxpayers won't have to fork over a penny. What a welcome notion. All the money taxpayers have shovelled into ms "hums and professional sports tea over the years is astronomical and downright obscene. Tax- payers in Montreal are still paying for money oney trap known as Olympic Sta- dium. Premier Harris's stand is a great show of respect for the taxpayers, but can he actually enforce this request? I'm not exactly sure it's entirely possi- ble. Hosting the Olympics costs bil- lions of dollars and will leave the area with... more stadiums. That's great for those consortiums looking to land a National Football League team. If Premier Harris is serious about guaranteeing a profit he'll need to land a huge commitment from the private sector. The cost for infrastructure such as road improvements and construc- tion will cost millions of dollars none. Already areas in and around Durham and Toronto are suffering from a back- log of road improvement needs. With cuts to municipal transfer payments, the Olympics could be the vehicle to help get roadwork back on track. If Toronto has the opportunity to host the games, it most certainly would be revered as one of [he finest Olympic locales in modern history, making f i- ture bids more appealing to IOC mem- bers. There's no question the games will spill over into Durham. Whether it's from hosting actual events or pro- viding accommodations for tourists, local businesses can cash in and bene- fit from this international event. A large sector of society enjoys having close access to professional sports teams, internationally renowned arts and yes, even events such as the Olympic Games. I'd have a hard time finding a handful who in this day and age would be willing to foot the bill through increased taxes. environ- mentally friendly addition than flags. The number of adults choosing orthodontics is on the rise. More adults are opt- ing for healthy smiles these days. In fact, today one out of every four orthodontic patients is an adult. Regardless of a person's age, orthodontic treatment is usually a change for the better. The mechanics involved in the movement of teeth are essentially the same in adults as in chil- dren. Gaps between teeth, crowding, protruding front teeth and teeth in abnormal positions are problems that may be corrected in the adult by orthodontic treat- ment. However, because an adult's facial bones are no longer growing, certain con- ditions cannot be resolved with braces alone. Sometimes, surgery is required to obtain the cor- rect result. The health of 's teeth, gums and supporting bone, as well as jaw relation- ships, are key factors in determining the prospects of improving one's appear- ance through orthodontic treatment. Contrary to popular belief, wearing braces will not interfere with an adult lifestyle. Patients can make business presentations, sing, play an instrument, dine -out and of course, kiss! The biggest inconvenience, gen- erally, is working regular visits to the orthodontist into an adult's busy sched- ule. More and more men are rec- ognizing the increased confidence that a good-looking smile can bring. And men also are becoming more aware of the importance of good dental health and the role of orthodontics in creating beautiful, healthy smiles that can last a lifetime. ORTHODONTICS AND ITS ROLE IN TREATING HEALTH PROBLEMS Health concerns are often the pri- mary consideration for adult treat- ment. Crooked teeth and bad bites may seriously affect oral health. Orthodontic treatment might help pre- vent many serious potential problems such as tooth decay, gum disease and eventual tooth loss. One of the most prevalent adult orthodontic problems is teeth that are too crowded. These are extremely dif- ficult to clean, making them more prone to decay, even if good oral hygiene is practiced. Conversely, spaces can also be a problem, especial- ly if the early loss or extraction of teeth causes healthy teeth to tip into open spaces. Deterioration of the support- ing bone may occur, causing teeth to become loose. Protruding front teeth, in addition to being unattractive, do not meet properly during chewing. This can cause abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, as well as excess stress on supporting bone and gum tissue. The stress on supporting tissues might contribute to gum disease and possibly lead to loss of teeth. Orthodontic problems are not always confined to the mouth. Disorders of the temporomandibular joints, which connect the lower jaw to the skull, may be one of the reasons why millions of people suffer from chronic headaches, earaches and facial pain. Though temporomandibular dis- orders (TMD) may have a variety of causes, treatment Bei' 646' &- 4141&4 Cew (M. THE NEW SCIENCE OF HEALIN The Better Health d. Relaxing after a busy morning seeing patients, Dr. Daniel David (D.D.) Palmer inquired as to how his deaf janitor, Harvey Lillard, had lost his hear- ing. Lillard related that 17 years earlier, while work- ing in a cramped, stooping position, something "gave - in his back, and he imme- diately became deaf. D.D. examined the man's spine and found what appeared to be a misaligned verte- bra. "Is this the cause of the hearing loss?" he won- dered. With Lillard's per- mission D.D. placed him face down on a bench in his study, put his hands over the maligned verte- bra, and carefully thrust along the man's spine. Lillard got up, walked -to the open window, and turned to Palmer with a smile. After 17 years he could hear again. At first D.D. thought he had discovered he had a cure for deafness but, as he later wrote, "Shortly after this relief from deaf- ness, I had a case of heart trouble which was not improving. I examined the spine and found a dis- placed vertebra pressing against the nerves which innervate the heart. I adjusted the vertebra and gave immediate relief. Then I began to reason if two diseases, so dissimilar as deafness and heart trouble, came from impingement, a pressure on nerves, were not other diseases due to similar cause?" Individuals with all kinds of health problems were responding to Palmer's new "hand treat- ments" – those with asth- ma, skin conditions, diges- tive problems, headaches, epilepsy, sciatica... the list went on and on. Soon peo- ple were travelling far and wide to experience Dr. Palmer's new discovery. One of Palmer's early patients was Rev. Samuel Weed, a scholar who took No 412sT. & P.S.T. The word is used as both an adjective and a noun. Palmer began to research and refine the art, science, and philosophy of this new healing system, and founded what is now the Palmer College of Chiropractic. He is known as the "Discoverer," while his son, Bartlett Joshua (B.J.) who succeeded his father in leadership of the fledgling profession, became known as the "developer" of chiroprac- tic. They also contend macabre games promote vio- lence, creating a 'murder -is - fun' culture and that when vou're dealing with tens of millions of kids some are on the edge, and gruesome games push them over it. Len Eron, a professor at the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor, followed the media -watching habits of 825 subjects from 1960 to 1982. Eton reported there was a relation between the violence of the media programs kids watched at home and how aggressive they were in school. Jeffery Goldstein, who teaches in the School of Mass Communications at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, challenges this casual relationship. Mr. Goldstein says his research shows people know the dif- ference between dramatiza- tion and real life. He showed subjects films of real facial operations where a young girl's face was sliced open during surgery. Mr. Goldstein claims few of them could watch it and that video games provide constant clues that they are simply dramatizations. David Grossman, a retired lieutenant colonel, taught psychology at West Point. He says, -there is a vast gulf be - The Doctor Game 'b 4 IV GiJjord Jows MD. 3 tween being an average citi- zen and taking a human life" Mr. Grossman says "the Army uses video and com- puter combat simulations for that very reason: to prepare soldiers to kill. That soldiers must be permitted to simu- late the act of killing in order to give them the skill, the confidence and the desire' For instance, the Army uses MACS (Military Arcade Training), and the Marine Corps uses Marine Doom. They utilize these for a rea- son. They are experts at teaching people to kill. Mr. Grossman suggests video games offer similar training. Retired colonel Ron Krisak, who ran the battle labs at Fort Dix disagrees. He claims military simulations have nothing to do with de- sensitizing recruits. Rather, they train them to be more ef- fective. But Mr. Grossman contends a steady diet of shooting games can turn a novice into a superb marks- men. For instance, records show in real life engage- ments, only one in 10 bullets from police officers' guns hits the criminal and the av- erage distance for the shot is only 23 feet! They're sup- posed to be the experts. But Michael Carncal, the • r &911%4419.4!--, , C aria A 14 -year-old involved in a school shooting, to the best of our knowledge, had never fired a gun. But he stole a 22- calibre rifle, fired a few prac- tice shots, and hit eight stu- dents with eight shots, five in the head. Who is right? We know repeated stimuli and rewards reinforce certain behaviours. Ring a bell and trained dogs know it's lunch time. The same technique trains rats to naviL,ate mazes. t hat ,shout jhildrcn ' I suspect Mr. Grossman is right that repeated violence may push some impression- able kids over the edge. But 99.9 per cent know the differ ence between reality and the modem version of Cowboys and Indians. If not, we'd have tens of thousands of Littleton shootings. To prevent Littleton killings a major revolution in social behaviour will be re- quired.
