Elizabeth Witmer.
Those were among the mes-
sages provincial cabinet minis-

Teachers in summer
school to study .for fall
Educators flock to Durham to prepare for new curriculum
Elementary teachers from
public and separate schools
throughout Ontario are hitting
the books this week at a math
workshop at St. Matthew the
Evangelist Catholic School in
Whitby.
The three-day course, enti-
tled Mathematics — Making
Sense of the Change, is one of
a series of workshop% being of-
fered by the Ministry of Educa-
tion and the province's teach-
ers' federations this summer.
And, as Education Minisler
Janet Ecker reports, the Cur-
riculum Summer Institutes tak-
ing place for the first time this

..one of the exciting things I've
found since I got here."
In total, 52 elementary
courses and 17 secondary
courses are being offered to
help teachers prepare for the
coming school year.
All the programs, held
throughout July and August,
are voluntary and are funded
through the ministry, with no
cost to panicipants.
The workshops are "a good
sign there is common ground"
between educators and the gov-
ernment, maintains Ms. Ecker.
The Pickering -Ajax -Uxbridge
MPP explains in the past,
"leachers were left to their own
devices" to translate the cur-
riculum into daily lessons.
However, this year the
Province is providing educators
course profiles and samples of
what student work should hook
like under the new learning ex-
pectations, she says.
This week's course, running
Tuesday to Thursday at the
Willowbrook Drive school, is
designed to "give teachers an
overview of the current math
resources and how they con-
nect with the new Ontario math
expectations", notes a brochure
outlining the workshops.
The course is being present-
ed by Mary Gervais and Susan
Perry, consultants for elemen-
tary education with the
Durham Catholic District
School Board.
It is the fourth government'
funded training session for ele-
mentary teachers to be held in
Durham this summer.

For over a week, water com-

treatment plants in Bow -
Manville. Newcastle, Oshawa
and Whitby has had a slightly
musty, earthy smell. New filters
at the recently -constructed Ajax
plant have effectively removed
the smell from water in
Durham's two western -most
municipalities. Pickering and
Ajax. Pon Perry, where drink-
ing water comes from a well -
based system, has not been af-
fccted. The smelly situation is
created when temperatures in
Lake Ontario rise, causing
growth and decomposition of

happens, low levels of com-

sult is the smell.

It's business as usual — sort of—
at local Eaton's stores as employees
and customers wait to find out what
will happen to the retail chain's out-
lets in Durham.
..The store is filled with cus-
tomers asking just that question:'
says Alan Smith, store manager at
the Pickering Town Centre Eaton's.
He reports business has been brisk
so far this week, with many visitors
having heard about the chain going
into bankruptcy and hoping to take
home a bargain.
However, there has been little
news from head office and staff have
been continuing with normal store
operations.
..We're anticipating some sort of
co-ordinated liquidation to happen:'
says Mr. Smith, who was expecting
he might receive some detailed in-
structions from head office Tuesday
afternoon.
His biggest concern right now is
the storc's approximately 125 em-
ployees, who are all understandably
anxious about losing their jobs.
"Any store is a community within
a community and we have •a particu-
larly good one here:' he says. b it's
not a happy day but 1 think the staff
are holding up reasonably well. -
The worker, arc hoping some way
will he found to keep the store open.
It has been a successful and prof-
itable outlet for Eaton's, ccording to
the manager.
"Cm hopeful the sum will be
picked up by another retailer. Then
the good people who work here
would have an opportunity too work

Oshawa Centre ever since it opened
too, in 1957, says mall general man-
ager Bill Thompson.
"It's been a very successful store:"

Mr. Thompson says Eaton's still
has "considerable time" left on its
lease at the Oshawa Centre.
There is little for mall manage-
ment to do about the situation but
wait and see how the bankruptcy and
liquidation of assets proceeds for
Eaton's. and whether a buyer can be

J What is going on at the Pickering nuclear station? Is

living in Ajax and Pickering?
Just a few of the milder questions that come to mind in the
wake of the latest leak confirmed by our nuclear neighbour.
When the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station sprang the
leak last Tuesday and continued to spew radiation -laced water
into the environment until Sunday. it couldn't have come at a
worse time. Not that there is any good time for a fowl -up at a
nuclear plant. lust as a nuclear station provides the power to
sustain us. so tow docs it have the potential of claiming the
lives of untold thousands of neighbour.
Reactor 6 on the nuclear station's functioning 'B' side - the
half of the power plant that hasn't been shut down - was shut
down Sunday when it continued to leak small amounts of ra-
dioactive tritium into the lake and the air. Plant personnel last
Tuesday detected an increase in the amount of radioactive
heavy water getting into light water heated by the former to
produce the steam that drives the station's turbine generator.
But. such a small amount of heavy water was getting into the
light water that plant management hoped the leak would just
disappear as it often does. It didn't.
So. station management decided to shut down the reactor
on the weekend even though the plant wasn't exceeding reg-
ulatory limits on the amount of tritium it's allowed to release
into the environment.

It was just a while back that the nuclear plant's operating
company received a scathing admonition from the nuclear m-
dustry's regulatory body over problems at the Pickering sta-
bon. The Atomic Entergy Control Burd issued a tetter of rep•
remand to Ontario Power Generation stating five foul-ups at
the plant demonstrate attitudes about safety ..remain a persis-

those promises. And they deserve it. Area citizens are eras-
peraded with the ongoing problem at the power plant, prob-
lems that could he termed a comedy of error if there wasn't
so much potential for tragedy. We have a pledge for those
OPG officials who keep making premises of their own.
Everyone will be closely watching the assessment process of
the Pickering 'A' restart and the gangs -on at the station.
And we have an assessment of our own on the way you're
running the plant: Clean up your act. Now.

roots solidly planted in Cana
dian soil. Born and raised here
she is, by any definition, a true
Canadian. But on occasion
other Canadians haven't exact-
ly made her feel at home, in
her home and native land.
According to this confident,
articulate 30 -year-old woman,
"Growing up in Bowmanville
was, cr, interesting" She says
she wasn't really a victim of
racism "but I did experience a
lot of ignorance. People would
ask me, "So where are you
from?, or they'd say, 'Gur-
preet? That's a different
name.' And it's not so much
what they say, as the tone of
voice used. I just cringe when-
ever I hear it, because the sug-
gestion is: 'You're not one of
us."'
She points out it's an odd
thing to hear coming from the
descendants of immigrants.
After all she's no different
from the vast majority of
Canadians, whose forefathers
originated from other lands. In
Gurpreet's case, her parents
came here from northern India
a few decades ago, and she is
proud to count herself among
the scanty Sikh population of
Durham. (There are approxi-
mately 85 Sikh families in
Durham Region, a number that
hasn't changed much over the
past 20 years.)
Her parents, Kuldip and
Amarjit Sodhi of Bow.
Manville.- have a lot to do with
her pride in both her Canadian
roots and in her family's ori-
gins, history, culture and reli-
gion.
"Our parents made sure we
had the best of both worlds.
My brothers played hockey
and I had figure skating
lessons," says Gurpreet.

and teach them our religion"

focus in their lives.

Among the objectives of the
CBW is to identify issues that
affect women in Durham Re-
gion and take appropriate ac-
tion. For example, Mrs.
Browne says one common
problem is with young black
women being passed over for
promotions in the workplace,
despite their qualifications.
"We've heard complaints
from young black women who
are down at the bottom, or
used as tokens.
"We won't actually go in
and talk to their boss, but we
do encourage young women to
stand up for what's right."
Mrs. Allen adds: "We have

ple who are just as capable,
and even more capable, for
certain jobs. Canada will not
be a great country until it starts
to use its talents. And talented
people can come in any form
or colour, I don't care whether
they're black, white, red or
green.-

sure money for your child's education is there:
Start early. The younger your child is, the
greater your opportunities. Over time, even small
amounts invested regularly can grow to an impres-
sive size. For example, thanks to compound inter-
est, even a $25 monthly contribution, while your
child is still young, can add up to as much as
$15,000 by the time they are ready to sten their
post -secondary education.
Take advantage of the Canada Education Sav-
ings Grant and start a Registered Education Sav-
ings Plan (RESP) for your child. You can invest up
to 54,000 per child, per year and the government
will contribute 20% on the first $2,01X1 annual con-
tribution to a maximum of $400 per child.
Make investments in trust for your child. Capi-
tal gains earned on investments, provided they meet
certain criteria, would be included in your child's
taxable income, since the property now belongs to
them. In mlul cases, your child's income will be
taxed at a lower rate.

The dance studio won the gold
medal for the large group choreogra-
phy at the Canadian Interprovincial
championships in Ottawa while per-
forming a number with original
choreography. Wallace Symington
Highland Dancers have also won
large group choreography titles at
Calgary. Winnipeg. London and Cape
Breton events.
Group members range from
novice dancers to the premier group,
the highest level a dancer can
achieve.
Meanwhile. Erin Rose, 17, of
Scarborough, captured the gold
medal in the adult division in Ottawa.
It was the first time the talented
dancer earned gold at Canadian inter -
Prov where she's been the Ontario
representative the past 10 years.
Rose topped off her weekend by
winning the North American champi-
onships and the open Ontario cham-

She is now competing in Scotland

The Ajax -Pickering Community
Orchestra is tuning up for its fourth
season of giving musicians a chance
to perform for audiences in area
communities.
This coming season• the orches-
: tra of musicians ranging in age from
14 to their golden years will present
four concerts throughout the fall,
winter and spring.
The opening performance, A
^ Pops Concert, will feature the works
Of Grigg, Elgar, Vaughan Williams
and von Suppe Saturday, Oct. 23.
The second presentation, entitled
Russian Masterworks, is slated for
Saturday, Nov. 27.
The concert will include works
by Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Haydn
and Schubert.
Romance and Arias is the name
of the third show in the series, slated
for Saturday, Feb. 26.
The Ajax -Pickering Community
Orchestra will present pieces from
Bocherrini, Britten and Smetna.
Special guest for this concert will be
Canadian soprano Stephanie Piercey
who will be featured in several
opera arias.
All three concerts will be present -

Each show starts at 7:30 p.m.
Donations will be accepted at the

Most encouraging for
first-year head coach Eric
Rohs was that the freshmen

more experienced counter-

"I saw some things that
were certainly encouraging
of the 19 rookies we
dressed;' notes Ross. "It was
an opportunity to give the
kids a taste ofjunior hockey.
Some of our guys did very
well, but some of them are
not ready to play at the junior
level yet.
"I'm cautiously opti-
mistic. We seem to he solid
on the back end and in goal
but, up front, we have a lot of
tough decisions to make. I
think the team speed is pretty
good, but whether we'll be
able to score goals at the ju-
nior level is a question mark. -
Ross praised the work of
three Pickering players who
made an immediate impact
with the club. Forwards Allan
Maclsaac. Dave Visconti and
Brent Chandler, who all
Played with the Ajax -Picker-
ing Raiders midget 'AAA -
squad last season, played -es-

Ajax -Pickering Dolphins Football
Club teams split their Central On-
tario Football League season home
Openers against the Brampton Bull-
dogs at Kinsmen Park last Sunday.
The Dolphins' tykes were bitten
by the Bulldogs 204 The Dolphins
had scoring chances early in the
game, but some key mental errors
turned the game around in favour of
the 'dogs. Bros Elliot was the Dol-
phins game star on offence, while
Garrett Camara was the defensive
star.
Meanwhile, the Dolphins' atoms
had little trouble earning a 45-12
'victory over the visitors. Scoring for
the home team were Jamey Tyrell
and Abi Olusoga with two touch-
downs apiece. Ryan Rouleau and
Dan West each found the end zone
for a touchdown.
The Dolphins' tyke and atoms
host the Markham Raiders at Kins-
men Park Sunday, Aug. 29. Mean-
while, the Ajax -Pickering peewees

PICKERING — The stage is set
for the Pickering 17, Tennis League
gold -medal final after Head Titanium
Tennis and Just Desserts won their
semi-final matches recently.
The other two teams — Concord
Storage and Jaguar — will play for
the bronze medal.
The contest between Head Titani-
um Tennis and Concord Storage was
highlighted by two extremely close
singles matches. In girls' action,
Head's Robyn Stewart and Con-
cord'sAllana Carerc split two hard-
fought sets, 7-5. 5-7, forcing tate two
to play a match -deciding ticbreaker.
In the end. Stewart won the ticbrcak.

The boys"singles match between
Head's Winston Tang and Concord's
