Lego architect is king of the castle AJAX — An Ajax boy likely feels like king of the castle after a medieval palace created with some 95,000 pieces of Lego caught the eye of officials at a shopping centre, where it will be displayed this week. Glengrove Public School student Alex deLint'spalace 'Eurasia'will beondisplay at the Scarborough Town Centre Tuesday, Aug. 24 until Sunday, Aug. 29. It will be set up in the lower level of the mail behind Centre Court, where Alex will complete the construction by attaching four towers and building antique -style caff iages. Ile lavish medieval palace features Eu- ropean and Oriental influences. It is six feet long, four feet wide and stands four feet tall. It contains elaborate detail, with for- mally -dressed characters in the Grand Hall of the palace and intricate gothic arches and other architectural features. Alex began building the palace in Feb- ruary without plans or drawings, and com- pletcd it at the end of June. He began con- struction in the family living room, but the project was transferred to the garage as it grew. The 13 -year-old has been wowing young and old with his creations for sever- al years now. Last year, he used 90,000 pieces to construct a model of the Titanic, which was displayed at the Better Living Home Show in Hamilton. Before that, Alex built a 12 -foot -long cruise ship and a five-foot tall, three-level opera house. They will join 150 members of the current technical and engineering work- force in Oshawa to contribute to actual vehicle design and develop- ment capability, focusing on chas- sis and body sub -systems. He said it's encouraging to see GM's commitment to Canada in- light of the auto pact negotiations coming up this fall. He also congratulated the Prime Minister and his government for hold- ing firm on the auto pact in the spring. "Obviously it's a move in the right direction," John Scanlan, one of two CAW Local 222 members who dealt with GM about skilled jobs at the cen- tre, said after the ceremony. "We're happy to be part of iL" His colleague, Pat Blackwood. agreed - "At a time when we're losing people in the plant, it's great to see people get- ting jobs in Oshawa," he said. "What an incredibly strong statement of faith this is." Oshawa Councillor Brian Nicholson said the centre ts great news and shows a great deal of confidence by GM in the community and the workforce. He added he hopes the new high-tech cen- tre will sM other similar development in the city. Durham Region Chairman Roger Anderson said GM is putting its "faith in our economy" and shows the compa- ny '1has plans to be here for a long time to come." 300 officials, politicians, GM execs and workers and members of the media crowded around to hear the news. -This is an exciting day," agreed Buzz Hargrove, national chairman of the Canadian Auto Workers union. Aside from the odd Canadarm or Avro Arrow we have the mTutation of being hewers of wood and drawers of water. We're much more than that and the confidence shown by GM. it's hoped, will be followed by many other companies across the coun- try. We have the talent and know-how. It should be applied here at home instead of being exported elsewhere. E-mail comments on this editorial to nnews @tdurham. net. Include your name and town of residence. Like Staff Editor Tim Kelly. I am appalled that any- one would feel they need to brag about stupidity. I wonder if Anita Goodrich should have even graced your pages. All this does is offer others who share her cere- bral capacity the opportunity to jump on her bandwagon. I no longer drive at all. I had an THE EDITOR unfortunate accident and nearly lost my left eye. I took to moun- tain bike riding, on and off-road. I now enjoy the passenger seat while my wife drives for our fam- ily. Even doing road work on my bike is unnerving enough. I have to see everywhere because, al- though I ride safely and within the parameter% of the law, I assume that vehicles will not see me. When I learned to drive in my youth, I remember my father telling me to "assume that every- one around you is the worst driver in the world ... and you'll be better prepared to deal with a situation". It's unfortunate that this line of reasoning is even necessary to some people. The roads in our communities are becoming increasingly satu- rated and it concerns me. As Mr. Get 'in the Games, golden agers Kelly wrote, "There are enough bad drivers out there who drive close to the speed limit as it is." Senior Games in Ontario were in- troduced in 1982. Today. there are 39 districts that hold Games, including Durham, which began hosting events that same year. Since then, there has been a hard- working volunteer committee provid- ing "games for older adults" in this area. John Lester, Gord Dodds and their committee deserve your support. These stalwarts have very unselfishly provided people 55 years of age and older the opportunity to participate in golf, five- and 10 -pin bowling, carpet bowling, lawn bowling, darts, bridge, euchre, cribbage, shuffleboard, tennis, swimming, snooker, cribbage and horseshoes. The Durham Senior Games have at- tracted as many as 600 participants to this very special event. Considering the population of Durham, it should be much higher. There are many wonderful benefits to playing in the Ganws. There is great Terry James Opinion Shaper camaraderie during all of the events. People from all over Durham meet, compete and enjoy the company of new and old friends. Another motivation for participants is that every second even-numbcred year, the winners of regional Games are eligible to attend Actifest, the Provincial Championships for Senior Garrics. In the year 2000, Actifest will be held in Ottawa. Special events like this just don't happen. It takes a lot of time, effort and sometimes money to make it all come together. In order for the Durham Se- nior Games to become a reality, a group of hard-working, dedicated se- niors is continually presenting these Games for out residents. They have performed wonderfully in affording anyone 55 and over the opportunity to participati.- The citizens of Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa and all the other towns in the region should give their fullest support to this wonderful en- deavour. The Durham Senior Gaines being held next spring offer a chance to meet new friends, participate in the sport of your choice and be part of a great tra- dition that can only enhance your life. For those not interested in playing, the Games Committee, which meets; on a regular basis, needs volunteers. This writer is getting involved. Why don't you? Sign up as a partici- pant or a volunteer to help with the var- ious events. You don't even have to be- long to a seniors' club or centre. Call me at 839-8890, John Lester at 839-2428, Gord Dodds at 728-5322, the Whitby seniors'centre at 668-1424 or the Oshawa centre at 576-6712. She believes that her many Successes has helped prepare her to take the students of Durham Dance Centre to new and exciting opportunities. Tammy's professional training at Ryerson Polytechnical University, her affiliation with great artists such as Brian Foley, Gladys Forrester, Nadia Potts, Stelio Calagias, Danny Grossman and other dance professionals has had a lasting influence on her style and approach towards educating her students in the art of dance. Tammy continues to judge dance competitions throughout Canada and is often a guest teacher at various dance workshops. She was a model with Penny Noble Model Management in Toronto and also appeared in movies, music videos, commercials and print ads. She still cherishes her stint as an Argonaut Sundancer for the Toronto Argonauts and will never forget the excitement she experienced when they won the Grey Cup. Tammy was also honoured "Home Town Hero" an award which was presented by the Member of Parliament. Tammy is currently the Vice President of Canadian Dance Masters of America Chapter #38. This is an organization that is committed to educating children in the Art of Dance. This past summer Tammy had the distinguished privillege of representing the Chapter as the Canadian Delegate to sit on the Board of Directors at the National Convention held in Anaheim, California. She had an opportunity to view and participate in classes taught by some of the finest teachers in the dance profession. She feels that the experience was very valuable and looks forward to sharing some great ideas with her students. Tammy carries her talent and many accomplishments to her own studio in Pickering. When she purchased Durham Darv—,e Centre Inc. after graduating from Ryerson University, it was a small 700 square foot building. It has since grown to three studios with more than 4,500 square feet. Tammy prides herself in educating students from the age of 3 to adult in the art of dance. She teaches ballet, jazz, tap, acro, stretch and Pointe. Tamffry strives to develop seff- confidence in her dancers, discipline and encourages her students to work as a team. Tammy is proud of each and every one of her students and doesn't favor a student who takes several classes a week over a student who dances once a week. "Everyone is special at the studio". All students are taught in a warm and friendly dance environment, by a hkjhty qualified staff. Durham Dance Centre offers kinderdance for three year olds. The class is ballet -based with a mixture of iazz to introduce young children to both forms before they advance into a set syllabus. All students participate in an annual show at the Markham Theatre for the Performing Arts which are always sold out shows. Durham Dance Centre offers Royal Academy of Dancing ballet exams for all interested students. Students receive exam marks among the highest in Canada - two of which were accepted to the National Ballet of Canada. Tammy's students have won such prestigious awards such as Miss Dance Of Canada 1997, Miss Junior Dance Of Canada 1998, American Dance Awards Junior Dancer of the Year 1996, 1997, many over - All Awards and cash scholarships. This past year her students won I st Runner -Up Miss Dance Of Canada 1999, 2nd Runner -Up Miss Dance Of Canada 1999, Judges Choice Award for Miss Dance Of Canada, 2nd and 3rd Runner -Up for Miss Teen Dance Of Canada 1999, 2nd Runner -Up and Judges Choice Award for Miss Junior Dance of Canada 1999. Most -talented non - finalist for Miss Petite Dance Of Canada and 3rd Runner -Up for Miss Mini Dance Of Canada 1999. Tam" also had two students place as Ist and 3rd Runner -Up for American Dance Awards Teen Dancer of the Year. Her students also participated in a Documentary in conjunction with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet which was also aired on C.T.O. and Participated at this years National Tap Dance Day which was held at Nathan Phillips Square. Tammy would also like to congratulate her students who will be participating in this years "Rising Star Youth Competition" which will take place at the C.N.E. Classes begin in September and continue during the school year with an artnual recital in June. Students can come, once or as many as 15 times a week. Karen says that dance provides an excellent challenge for young peo- ple combining mental exercise with I an years o us, pre -ballet, jazz I T TORING THAT WORKS & EKIIS" ,I!, 1W S imi physical movement. It's also a perfect activity for parents looking for a way to keep their children busy during the year. Parents of pre-school age children should know that Karen and her instructors will give their children a great deal of patience and gentle disci- pline because they sincerely care about their progress. "Your child's progress and suc- cess is not always a matter of learning to skip, completing a perfect somer- sault or hitting the right musical note," says Karen. "For some children simply gaining the confidence to par- ticipate with their peers without their parents at arms reach, to take direction from the teacher and have fun is a rewarding and realistic goal. It's a bonus if the students learn a few basic steps." She explains that parents should- n't be in a hurry to have the perfect dancer. "First let the teacher establish a trusting atmosphere and a love of the art and then in a few weeks time, incorporate the skills," says Karen. "Remember that all children, even in the same age range, will develop at in Ajax different rates. Let your child gain his or her new found skills at his or her leisure." Growing in popularity for adults is the ballroom dancing and swing classes. Couples can learn an activity that is not only fun but will make them look good on the dance floor. "We get couples who are getting married and want to feel confident as they dance for their wedding guests," says Karen. "Others just want to learn proper steps so they feel comfortable and confident when the go to a dance." O'Brien Dance Centre features two and soon three spacious, air con- ditioned studios with spring wood floors. Registration will take place Sept. 1, 2, 7 and 8 from 6 to 9 p.m. and Sat. It's time for Extreme Kids!!! Extreme Fitness in association with Fit Club International and Swim Time, Swim School, has opened Canada's first ever health club for children ages 2 months to 15 years. Extreme Kids, located in Extreme Fitness at the Home and Le-isure Centre in Pickering, offers parents and children the luxury of having health and fitness pro- grams within the same locafion. Extreme Kids is a family friendly, multi - activity club that features everything from professionally supervised swimming lessons by Swirntime to dance, rock climbin& arts, crafts, conditioning and cardiovascular cLisses, martial arts and gymnasium team sports, making this the ultimate adventure club. % Charlene Kalia is the director of opera-' tions for Extreme Kids, and she is able to talk endlessly about the benefits of this exciting new program for both parents and children. "What makes Extreme Kids such a unique experience," explains Charlene. "is that we offer energetic, exciting activities that aim to put the fun ba ck into fitness." M We are concerned with com- petition, not only will there be improvement in their health through regular participation, the kids will also learn about Children's programming should not only be about fun. If it is to be truly benefi- cial, it must also teach certain life skills hence, the association with the people at Swim Time. The simple fact is that if your child has not been taught to Swim they are potentially at risk. The environment in which you choose to teach your child this life skill has everything to do with their ultimate success. Owner Sherri Marshall and Swim Director Kelly Tesselaar have over 2.5 years experience and are affiliated with both the Red Cross and Life Saving Society. Sherri believes that while success can only be achieved by making the lessons fun and rewarding, it is low student to teacher ratios (maximum 3 to 1) and the individual atten- tion that guarantees the success. Swim Time opened its Thornhill location in February of 1997 and currently has an enrollment of just under 500 children. Certainly, all of this would be enough to make Extreme Kids the right choice for your family. However, let's not forget about the benefits to the parents. In today's busy time one can not underestimate the value of con- venience. "All these programs are under one roof which eliminates the stress of driving chil- dren from place to phice," explains Charlene. "Furthermore, parents can enjoy their own workout in Extreme's state of the art facili- ties knowing their children are only a heart- beat away in their open exclusive club with- in a club". The entire team at Extreme Kids and Swim Time are part of a growing group of fitness professionals concerned about declin- ing activity Ieve6 in today's children and are dedicated to making a difference. Writers, historians, and pundits the world over have marveled at how North America has turned into a self-serving generation of yuppies whose primary goal in life is to get ahead for themselves. Obviously, these "experts" don't have kids! Simply by reading this section of the paper you are probably looking for cultural, physical or recreational activity for your siblings. With the businesses that most of us are in, we see thousands of parents and families whose goal is not this self centered egotistical approach, but more of one of giving, or providing the best, and most opportunities for their kids. And what a selection they have! If you are a "boomer" like me. try for a minute to think of how limited the recreational opportunities were. Sure there were local arenas, community sports associations. and service clubs like Brownies, Scouts, or Cadets, but were there professionals in your community committed to developing children's cultural and recreational interests as their chosen profession'? If it did happen, I think it was the exception rather than the rule. As the 90's have unfolded Canada, and perhaps more specifically our local community have become diverse melting pots where the interests of the community are far more broad. With financial limitations in place, community sports groups and town recreational programs have been augmented people who love kids and have recognized and serviced these needs. Our 1998 Readers Choice Award as Best Dance Studio is evidence of that. and so too is the number of dancers that we have returning every year to take more and more classes. Some kids come for ballet. Others for acro. Some kids come for everything. Some kids never [cave or so it seems. At Jacqueline's School of Dance we offer Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Pointe. Cabaret, Highland. and acro for both children and adults. Dance is a culture which has evolved with this community and so many others across North America. Our dancers are proud to wear their caps or track suits to school and to tell their families and friends that they dance at Jacqueline's School of Dance. At Jacqueline's School of Dance ... we care about fun first and foremost. Dancers dance, hockey players skate. and tae kwon doers chop because it is fun. It's that simple. In the over fifteen years we have been in business we have kept the simple philosophy that our classes must be fun in order for the dancers to learn. Our dancers have learned. Our dancers have stayed with us for years and years. Some have been with us since they wcre two and three years old, and now when we look around the room to see them as they enter or even finish high school we know that unless they were having fun. they would not still he there. Jacqueline's School of Dance is not where stars arc born. it is a place where kid% can grow up without pressure. Improving Your Turnout Working to improve your turnout is an important part of dance training but you should never force or strain the hips in the process. By approximately age 12 the hip joints are formed and you can't change the amount of your skeletal turnout. You can do specific stretches and Strengthening exercises to improve case of turnout technique. The muscles crossing the front. side and back of the hips should be gently and routinely stretched. The deep stomach muscles, hip -,,)tators and abductors should be strengthened to keep the pelvis correctly placed. Dancers often experience little pops and clicks of their joints and tendons which are usually not cause for concern. If however, the clicks are persistent and associated with pain qr soreness then you must have the problem evaluated by an ,rthopaedic doctor The doctor may recommend stretching xercises. a modified ciance schedule and physical therapy. Deahng With Achines Tendinitis Many dancers develop Achilles tendinitis. Left untreated this can become a chronic problem, but with prompt, proper Care it can be resolved. There are specific exercises that can help if you have Achilles tendinitis but first you must allow the tendmitis to calm down and begin healing. Stop taking class for at least & week and then gradually build up by taking partial class -no more than 3 times a week, sitting out the jump and turn combinations. It is very important that you see your doctor for the correct diagnosis and guidance. A diagnosis of tenclinitis means there is microtrauma and inflammation of the tendon. You should ice at least once or twice a day to help promote healing and decrease inflammation. A good way to ice is to rub the tendon up and down with an ice cuiie for about 3 minutes until it is slightiv red and cold. If after 2 weeks you are not feeling a lot bett'er then return to your doctor for further advice. If your tendinitis is chronic you will need to follow different guidelines. Exercise Exercise to stretch out tight Calves, strengthen weak feet and legs. and loosen stiff insteps can help reverse tendinitis. To stretch out your calf , lie on your back with one leg out on the floor and the other leg raised straight up to the ceiling. Hold the ends of a belt in your hands with the middle of the belt wrapped under the ball of the raised foot. Flex your foot back to stretch of the calf as you gently pull on the ends of the belt. The stretch should be felt along the back of the leg. Hold the stretch for 15 seconds and then repeat with the other leg. Relieves lbeel risesl are a good way tc strengthen weak feet and legs. Initially do relieves sitting down in a chair so there is very little weight on the feet Make sure you are raising and lowering your himis Slowly. smoothly and without sickling or wingin,y. Technique faults to watch out for include rolling in and landing from jumps without articulating through the feet or putting the heels down. The Achilles tendon connects the calf muscle to the heel and normally the tendon runs straight up and down When the feet roll in however. the Achilles is forced into a bowed position and is more lik y to strain Rolling in happens when the dancer incorrectly distributes too much weight on the inner boarders of the feet, forces pliii too deeply or forces turnout incorrectly from the floor up. Work with your dance teacher to correct these technique faults. Shoes Pointe shoes can also cause strain on the Achilles and other tendons of the feet if they fit poorly or if they are too soft or the ribbons are tied too tight. Some dancers sew elastics into the pointe shoe ribbons at the area where the ribbons cross the Achilles tendon. This works very well to keep the ribbons snug and secure without ex*cessive pressure on the tendons. Be careful on hard floors and stages If your tendons are bothering you and you are taking dance class on a hard floor, leave out the jumps especially the big jumps across the floor. Take lass up until jumps then sit down and watch the rest of lass. Or if your teacher permits. go to the back of the class and practice small jumps in first and second position holdin4 the barre. Focus on articulating your feet for a quiet landing and getting your heels down Then slowly and gently stretch clit vour alvps and legs Dc not do any jumping or stretching exercises if you fe-I pain Dancers who are prone t, trridinitis or whr have ,,, 'A"'Irk. hard floors -an try putting shock absorbing irivles ;n dance shoes. In this case, the discomfort is usually felt just behind the inside ankle bone. Don't ignore your symptoms. The sooner you get help, the sooner you'll heal. Avoiding Bunions If one of your parents or a grandparent has bunions you are more likely to develop them since there is a hereditary factor however you can still do a lot to prevent bunion development. In addition to avoiding -winging" also work to avoid rolling in at the feet - both can contribute to the development of bunions. Make sure your dance shoes and street shoes are fitted properly Dancers often wear shoes that are too short. too narrow in the toe box or not supportive enough. Remember. your feet keep growing into your twenties. Even once you ve stopped growing your feet may continue to widen over time especially if you are dancing many hours a week. Some dancers need to wear orthotics 'custom made arch supports, in their street shoes to prevent biomechanical problems that contnbute to bunion development. A podiatrist or physical therapist can help you determine if you need orthotics -Winging" refers to a technique fault in which the feet are forced outward from the ankles toward the pinkie toes like wings of a bird. A small degree of "vinging- can add to the beauty of the line of the leg. The more a child's confidence grows, the greater their ability to take on new challenges and reach for higher goals. Using the cognitive method, we teach our students the most important lesson of all - 'How to Learn. Giving young students this 'edge'- in school and in life - is the driving principle behind the hugely successful Oxford Leaming Centres network. With 45 centres across Canada - and more than 15 years experience - Oxford Learning Centres are helping more students than ever do better at school and outperform their expectations. Oxford focuses on different programs for every level of student. At the elementary Level, our focus is on developing strong basic skills in reading, writing, math, and leaming skills - core skills that last a lifetime. At the high-school level, Oxford teaches students how to plan their time, study wisely, and accomplish more. Here, the focus is on helping the student achieve higher exam scores and complete homework and assignments on time. With each level, the Oxford key to success begins with a diagnostic assessment that pinpoints how each child leams. This assessment is then used to create an individual learning program that taps into that child's hidden success potential. In turn, these programs are supported by an innovative curriculum that builds on existing strengths and reinforces new habits. How wrong and far from the truth is this idea!! The primary directive of martial arts is to value life. We pray that we will neve'r have to use what we know. Through discipline, self-control and confidence in one's self, the knowledge gained from leaming martial arts will teach an individual student to respect life - to value it, to embrace it, to be a positive influence, to always he in control, and to walk away from conflict. Martial arts was first brought to the Shaolin Monks in China by an Indian Priest as a form of exercise. It was because of their poor health and improper diet that martial arts was horn. University Centre at Durham • . ,, ,AR PARTE In NEMS ADVERTISER TUESDAY EDITION, August 24,1999 Two Durham beaches closed this week Pickering, Ajax spots remain open Two Durham Region beaches remain closed to swimmers this week because of high levels of bacteria. Kinsmen Beach in Port Perry and Elgin Pond in Uxbridge remain closed. with Kinsmen readings higher than last week at 145 E.coli per 100 millilitres of water while Elgin is down to an almost accept- able 98. "Elgin Pond will remain posted as a precautionary measure." stated an Aug. 20 Durham Regional Health Department media advisory. "Recent water quality re- sults have been unsatisfactory.' Beaches usually remain open until readings hit 100 or more E. coli per 100 mi. But because Elgin Pond had a reading of 128 last week and an extremely high reading of 1,000 the week before. the health department is erring on the side of caution by urging people not to swim in waters off the beach. LOW COST OF OWNERSHIP SATURN SUTER'S GUIDE sop Jo , 11 Dents and dings vs. no dents and dings. Hmm, tough one. Decisions, decisions. Do you want a car with polymer panels that resist dents and rust, or one without? A car named the safest in its class, or one that wasn't? A car with a 30 day (2,500 km) money -back guarantee, or, well you get the idea. Considering all the benefits of buying a Saturn, it's actually one of the easiest (and smartest!) decisions you'll make. And now for the legal. We believe in full disclosure, so here it comes. (Take a deep breath, now). The payments shown are based on the MSRP for our 1999 SLI. They include transportation and retailer prep. Taxes, licence, insurance, and $300 refundable security deposit are extra. Lease payments arc based on a low km lease of 60,000 km over 3 years, with an extra charge of 12e per km over that distance. Saturn's lease rate of 5.1% applies to customers with approved credit. If you'd like to buy your Saturn at lease end, it's S7,899 plus taxes. With a 52,000 downpayment (not including taxes), the maximum least obligation is 58,588. (And breathe out, and inhale once more.
